2:40 Skybet Press Red To Bet On C4 Handicap 2m 2f
1) (11) 9212 Whispering Death William Haggas 4-10-00v Liam Jones(5)
Consistent sort who has done well this season on his last three runs, finishing second here and at Warwick and in between winning well at Thirsk. Seems to appreciate fast ground but is racing off his highest level mark, having gone off up 5lb since his last run and 11lb since his victory. Not without a chance though, especially with claimer on board. BP= 6/1
2) (1) 3681 Merrymaker Mark Brisbourne 6-9-13 Patrick Mathers(3)
Got up at Chester when trying this trip for the first time earlier in July but faces a tougher task here in this company. BP= 16/1
3)(2) -512 Industrial Star Micky Hammond 5-9-06 Paul Hanagan
Won at Catterick the time before last and then struggled at same course when the five-length second. BP= 12/1
4)(6) 8732 Thewhirlingdervish Tim Easterby 8-9-03 David Allan
Stays very well and was pugging on at the end on his last two starts. A fast pace or longer will suit him. BP= 10/1
5)(7) -412 Lodgician J J Quinn 4-9-01 Graham Gibbons
Last two runs have been at Carlisle - probably the stiffest track in the country and he may struggle here. Has gone up 3lb from last time and 10lb from his victory. BP= 10/1
6)(4) -511 Ostfanni Martin Todhunter 6-9-00 Robert Winston
Has won her last two races at Musselburgh but will be racing off a 4lb higher mark than her most recent victory and 10lb more than the first one. This is a tougher race too.
BP= 6/1
7)(3) 3123 Mister Arjay Brian Ellison 6-8-13 Stephen Donohoe(5)
Third at Carlisle when Lodgician second. Had earlier won at Newcastle. He is racing off his highest mark. BP= 14/1
8)(8) 3112 Eforetta David Wintle 4-8-13 Chris Catlin
Both her recent wins came on the well-weather in May and her second on the same surface earlier this month. Earlier form on turf not very inspiring. BP= 20/1
9)(5) 5125 Mr Majestic Richard Whitaker 4-8-13 Dean McKeown
Won a six-runner handicap at Ripon and has since met defeat twice of a similar mark to that he is racing off today. BP= 16/1
10)(9) 4111 Rose Bien P J McBride 4-8-13p Edward Creighton(3)
Improving filly who seems to love fast ground. She has swiftly notched a hat-trick and is still on a fair mark. Must have a good chance. BP= 7/2
11)(10) 4456 Openide Brendan Duke 5-8-11 Ryan Moore
Won over hurdles on most recent start and is still going down in the handicap on the Flat but needs to judged on her recent efforts. BP= 15/2
SUMMARY ROSE BIEN is a fast improving filly and she is fair value to notch up another win.
CODEBREAKER
ASCOT, SATURDAY, JULY 29, 2006
4.20pm £750,000 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes, 1m 4f
Past Trends
16 of the last 17 winners had finished in the first three placings on their last outing
16 of the last 17 winners were aged between three and five
16 of the last 17 winners had finished in the first two at least once earlier in the campaign
15 of the last 17 winners had previously raced between one and four times earlier that season
The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes returns to Ascot after last year’s renewal was run at Newbury due to redevelopment at the Berkshire venue.
This year’s race sees a small but select field of six bid for glory in the prestigious all-age 12-furlong contest.
16 of the last 17 winners finished in the first three on their previous outing - the one exception during this time was Sir Michael Stoute's 2002 hero Golan, who could only manage a sixth in the Japan Cup on his previous start, which came the season before.
Of this year's six hopefuls, Cherry Mix, likely to be used as a pacemaker by Godolphin, managed only sixth last time out in the Yorkshire Cup and is the first to drop out.
16 of the last 17 King George winners won or finished second earlier in the season - the one anomaly being Pentire, who came third and fourth on his two earlier outings in 1996 .
Enforcer has managed no better than third this season from six runs and as a result is dismissed from the reckoning.
This leaves four to choose from - Hurricane Run, Electrocutionist, Heart’s Cry and Maraahel.
11 of the last 17 winners came into the King George in winning form, including six of the last seven victors.
Both Hurricane Run and Electrocutionist came second on their latest start, and are therefore overlooked on this occasion.
This leaves a choice between Japanese challenger Heart’s Cry and Maraahel, both five-year-olds who scored last time out.
However, 15 of the last 17 winners of the King George had previously won at Group One level - the only two who had not already won in the top grade were Belmez in 1990 and Doyen in 2004.
While Maraahel has yet to record a victory in top company, HEART’S CRY has won two Group Ones, and is therefore the Codebreaker selection this week.
