RITZ CLUB JULY FESTIVAL 2006
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
THIRD DAY, FRIDAY, JULY 14

REACTION: NEWMARKET RACECOURSES

LISA HANCOCK THRILLED BY FESTIVAL SUCCESS

Lisa Hancock, managing director of Newmarket Racecourses, this afternoon expressed her pleasure at the success of the 2006 Ritz Club July Festival.

Hancock pointed to the exceptional quality of the racing, the increasingly popular Jaeger Ladies’ Day, the post-race atmosphere surrounding Hayley Westernra’s performance on Classic FM Day and the marvellous weather as contributory factors in making the meeting a fantastic experience for everyone who attended.

She outlined: “We witnessed a performance of exceptional promise from Sander Camillo in the Chippenham Lodge Stud Cherry Hinton Stakes on Tuesday as well as a fine run from Rajeem to win the UAE Equestrian And Racing Federation Falmouth Stakes.

“Strategic Prince was an impressive winner of the TNT July Stakes, while Les Arcs gave an outstanding display to triumph in the Darley July Cup, which has always been Europe’s premier sprint but is now becoming even more recognised worldwide.

“Jaeger Ladies’ Day was once again a major success with a modern-day record crowd in attendance. Classic FM Day was very well received and the post-racing concert given by Hayley Westernra saw many race-goers staying on to relax in the sun and enjoy her performance.

“The Darley July Cup has always been one of our most important days of the year and the quality of the field underlines its standing in the racing calendar.

“We have also been blessed with great weather for the three days, which is always a boost.

“All in all, we have been thrilled by this year’s Ritz Club July Festival and feel it has provided the perfect send-off to the old facilities at the July Course, which is set to undergo a £9-million redevelopment prior to next year’s summer season.

“I’m confident that those race-goers who return to the July course in 2007 will be suitably impressed by substantial improvements that will have been made.”

RITZ CLUB JULY FESTIVAL TOP JOCKEY

JAMIE SPENCER QUOTES

FRIDAY DOUBLE GIVES SPENCER TOP JOCK HONOUR

Jamie Spencer rode a 87/1 double on the final day of the Ritz Club July Festival to finish as the top jockey for the three-day fixture.

The champion jockey emerged as the leading rider at Royal Ascot last month and he followed up with three triumphs here.

Formal Decree set the ball rolling on the second day and this afternoon Eddie Jock and Best Prospect landed the final two races for him.

Spencer, who also managed a second and a third, said: “It is nice after Ascot to come to the next big meeting and be leading rider.

“I suppose, in some ways, that I’m a bit disappointed with the week because my big guns just didn’t happen.

“But that is the beauty of racing. Last weekend I was the underdog with David Junior (who won the Coral Eclipse).

“This week, I was on all the fancied ones and they got beaten, but that is the way racing goes.

“It is nice to have a double today. I’m especially pleased to have a nice winner for Michael Bell (trainer of Eddie Jock) because Hoh Mike was disappointing yesterday (in the TNT July Stakes).”

TODAY’S CROWD

The attendance today was 10,350 (10,670 in 2005) and the three-day crowd 33,694 (34,089).

Race 1 - Curtis Medical Centres Handicap - Winning Quotes

DARK ISLANDER TAKES THE FIRST ON DARLEY JULY CUP DAY

Dark Islander took the spoils in the opening race on Darley July Cup day, the £30,000 Curtis Medical Centres Handicap for trainer John Hills and jockey Eddie Ahern.

The winner stayed on well in the closing stages to deny Dunelight by a length and three quarters.

John Hills commented afterwards: “He just raced a bit keen at Ascot last time and I was worried he might do so again today from his wide draw - he was just taking a half a tug on the outside.

“I think there is more to come from this horse when he gets into a race with a strong gallop and some cover.

“In time, I think he could stay a mile and a half and make up into a real horse. He’s very likeable.

“I not sure where he will go now. He could go to Goodwood and we will also look at Ascot. I think he could win a nice race.

“At this stage, it might be better to keep him against his own age group.”

The winner has been allotted 7st 13lb in the £150,000 totesport Mile at Goodwood and will pick up a 3lb penalty, taking his weight to 8st 2lb.

totesport quote him at 16/1 for the Goodwood race, while Paddy Power also go 16/1 with William Hill and Blue Square quoting 25/1.

RACE ONE: THE CURTIS MEDICAL CENTRES HANDICAP STAKES

GROUND/PLACE QUOTES

JOCKEYS SAY QUICK GROUND

It was no surprise when the jockeys returned from the opening race and declared top-of-the-ground conditions.

Jamie Spencer, rider of Leningrad, said: “It’s quick” - a comment echoed by John Egan, who rode Renderoc.

Alan Munro, the jockey on Charlie Cool, said: “It’s fast - good to firm ground.”

Paul Fessey, the rider of King Of The Moors, also reported: “It’s fast.”

COX PLEASED WITH DUNELIGHT

Clive Cox was delighted with the performance of Dunelight, who stayed on strongly to finish second to Dark Islander.

The trainer said: “He ran well. A mile is his trip. We will get him home and then we will see before deciding where he goes next.”

William Haggas, trainer of third Charlie Cool, returning to the track after a 292 lay-off, said: “He was a bit rusty and was a little tired.; But he got second wind and ran on well.”

Michael Kinane, jockey of the 4/1 favourite Regal Royale who finished 11th said: “He travelled alright and then just disappointed.”

RACE TWO: THE WEATHERBYS SUPERLATIVE STAKES

WINNER QUOTES

HALICARNASSUS IN 33-1 SHOCK

Halicarnassus sprang a 33-1 surprise in the Group Two Weatherbys Superlative Stakes.

The Cape Cross colt, who dead-heated on his debut on the July course three weeks ago, returned to prevail by half-a-length from Admiralofthefleet.

He was following in the hoofprints of Dubawi and Horatio Nelson, the last two winners of the race - both of whom went on to enjoy Group One triumphs.

So it was no surprise to find connections in jubilant mood following success in a race which is increasing in stature by the year.

Delighted jockey Tony Culhane said: “It rode a very good race. They went very fast and kicked early.

“My horse was green but he saw his race out well. He quickened up impressively and could be anything.”

Tim Corby, representing victorious trainer Mick Channon, said: “He is very laidback, ground doesn’t bother him.

“He’s got a lovely nature. We think he could be a very good horse.

“This was the plan. To win...that’s why we ran. So, we’ve done done that, now we’ll think of the next one.”

totesport were the most impressed by the win and introduced Halicarnassus at 33/1 for the 2,000 Guineas. William Hill opened up with a 40/1 quote, while Blue Square go 50/1.

MORE SECOND RACE WINNER QUOTES

THE WEATHERBYS SUPERLATIVE STAKES

TONY CULHANE - WINNING JOCKEY

Tony Culhane, the winning rider on Halicarnassus, said: “He was just so green and I had no daylight in the early stages.

“I felt that I had plenty of horse so coming down the hill I gave him a bit of daylight to see if that would work.

“I felt him get some momentum and he finished up really well.

“He will obviously be a very nice horse for next year and probably end up a middle distance horse.

“They went very quick up front and kicked a good way out. I thought they would have to be very good to keep going.”

Race 2 - Weatherbys Superlative Stakes - Placed Quotes

WACHMAN PLEASED

Irish trainer David Wachman was pleased with the effort of He’s A Decoy, beaten half a length by Halicarnassus in the £70,000 Group Two Weatherbys Superlative Stakes.

Wachman said: “He’s A Decoy ran well.

“He just got mugged in the last couple of strides. Today he showed he was a bit green - he was turning and looking at crowd where the course begins to narrow.

“But you would still have to be pleased with second in a race like this.

“I don’t know where we will go now. He’s entitled to go anywhere now. There is Goodwood and the good two-year-olds races are now starting in Ireland.”

CHAMPLAIN DISAPPOINTS

Champlain, the 13/8 favourite and previously successful in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot, ran a disappointing race and finished last of the seven runners.

His jockey, Philip Robinson, reported: “I don’t know what happened.

“There was just nothing there.”

Race 3 - Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup - Winning Quotes

MINE MAKES IT THREE

Mine created history on the final day of the Ritz Club July Festival when becoming the first horse to win the Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup three times. The Mike Dawson-owned gelding was previously successful in 2002 and 2005.

The eight-year-old, a 10/1 shot today, was partnered by Mick Kinane and finished with his customary late surge to deny Intrepid Jack by two lengths, under top weight of 9st 10lb.

Winning trainer James Bethell commented: “How many horses have won three Bunbury Cups?

“He took a long time to get fit this year after having a good holiday,

“He came back enormous and took time to come to himself with the cold spring holding him up.

“I felt I had him in top condition for the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot, and Richard Quinn said he had never felt better than he did that day. It was just the draw that beat him and he was in the wrong place.

“This horse is just so laid back and easy to train, I think that’s the key to him. He just goes about his work and thinks he’s on a jolly when he goes to the races!

“He will now probably go for the tote International at Ascot followed by the Prix Quincey at Deauville, if the owner is agreeable.

“He could well come back next year for another Bunbury Cup next year, lets hope the handicapper is kind.

“I preferred it when the Bunbury Cup was on a Thursday - it was quicker to get home!”

totesport make Mine 8/1 (from 16/1) for the totesport Mile, for which he has been allotted 9st, with a 3lb penalty to carry for his Bunbury Cup victory.

MINE A STAR

This is the fourth time that Mine has run in the Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup, one of the most historic British handicaps, and the third time that he has won the very competitive seven-furlong handicap. He was second the other time.

Today he defied top-weight of 9st 10lb to win by two lengths, his easiest margin of success.

In 2005, he beat 17 rivals, just holding on by a short-head from Polar Magic. He was ridden by Richard Quinn, now retired, that day and had 9st 9lb, 1lb below the top-weight.

Mine did not run in the 2004 Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup but finished fast under Jamie Spencer in the 2003 running to just fail to beat Patavellian by a short-head in the race which attracted 20 runners. He carried 9st 4lb that day.

His first appearance in the Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup came in 2002 at the age of four. He shouldered 8st 12lb, with Kieren Fallon up, to dead-heat with Capricho who was disqualified. There were 17 runners that year.

RACE THREE: THE LADBROKES BUNBURY CUP

PLACE QUOTES

BEATEN CONNECTIONS OUTLINE FUTURE PLANS

Hughie Morrison hailed his Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup runner-up Intrepid Jack, while at the same time praising three-time winner of the race Mine.

He said: “I’m delighted with how Intreped Jack has run but he has been beaten by a good horse.

“We will probably go back to six furlongs with him. He is the Stewards’ Cup, so if he comes out of this well, we’ll head to Goodwood.”

Richard Hannon, trainer of the third-placed Marching Song, said: “He has run a great race. He is a totally honest and genuine horse.

“If he comes out of this okay, we’ll have a look at the totesport International at the end of the month.”

RACE FOUR: THE DARLEY JULY CUP
WINNER QUOTES

LES ARCS SPEEDS TO JULY CUP JOY

Les Arcs added a Darley July Cup to an increasingly glittering CV with a power-packed performance to pip Iffraaj by a head.

The six-year-old struck in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot last month for a first Group One triumph.

This afternoon he demonstrated that was no one-off as he sped from just off the pace to hit the front late and then held on in the hands of jockey John Egan from the Frankie Dettori-ridden Godolphin horse.

After the 10-1 triumph, winning trainer Tim Pitt said: “I’m thrilled more for the horse’s sake than anyone else’s. He proved today that he is a genuine top-class sprinter.

“I’m not at all shocked by the progress this horse has made. There was one crazy moment in the middle of February after James (O’Reilly) won on him at Wolverhampton, Dawn Watson who used to look after him and is now my secretary, rode him in a piece of work. We were stood at the top of the gallops and I said to Willie (McKay), ‘Crazy mid-season target is the July Cup’. I didn’t think we would take in the Golden Jubilee on the way, though.

“Today, he wasn’t the quickest away but he travels supremely. John has taken his time and let find him his feet. He is the most genuine animal in the world but when he gets to the front, that’s him. He has done his job. And I was petrified that Frankie might just do us, but we’ve hung on.

“He is in the Nunthorpe (in August at York’s Ebor meeting) but probably won’t go there. He is in the Haydock Sprint Cup (in September at Haydock). There are two races in Japan that we’ve been looking very closely at. I wouldn’t mind taking him down to Australia for a couple of those races, either.”

John Egan said: “He travelled well. My aim was to follow Frankie but it didn’t work out, so I just picked out Amadeus Wolf then.

“I just followed that through and then luckily the split just came nicely for me. It is easy when a horse travels with you like that. You never seem to get boxed in. You only seem to get boxed in on the ones that aren’t going good enough.”

Race 4 - Darley July Cup - Placed Quotes

SO CLOSE FOR GODOLPHIN

Godolphin came very close to landing its first British Group One success of the season when Iffraaj was a fast-finishing second, by a head, to Les Arcs in Europe’s richest sprint, the £360,000 Darley July Cup.

Frankie Dettori, rider of Iffraaj, commented: “He was a checked a furlong and a half out and that cost him the race.”

Godolphin’s trainer Saeed bin Suroor added: “He ran well and it was good to have a horse run well in a big race.

“We are happy that the horses seem to be coming back to themselves.

“Iffraaj is a classy horse. He has been giving us a good feeling on the gallops over the last few mornings - much better than when he ran at Ascot.”

Looking to the future, racing manager Simon Crisford said: “Iffraaj is well entered up and we will look at everything from six furlongs to a mile.

“That was a hell of a run and we’re very pleased.”

Iffraaj is quoted at 12/1 (Stan James) and 11/1 (Willaim Hill) for the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood.

Back in third was Ashdown Express, who finished second two years ago and his trainer Chris Wall said: “He has run well and has put in another good, solid performance.

“At the moment he is in really good heart and could run in the Hackwood Stakes at Newbury next weekend and we will also consider the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville.

“This fast ground really suits him and he holds his form really well.

“I hope his time will come in one of these Group One races - but when?!”

Kevin Ryan said of fourth-placed Amadeus Wolf: “That was a great performance and I’m delighted - it was a super run.

“That’s two solid performances he has put in now.

“We will now wait for the Haydock Sprint Cup. The three-year-olds get closer to the older horses as the season progresses and Neil Callan thinks six furlongs is his trip.”

THE DARLEY JULY CUP

BEATEN HORSES

AUSTRALIANS BELOW PAR

Neither of the Australian raiders, Takeover Target or Falkirk, could reproduce their good Royal Ascot form in the Darley July Cup.

Takeover Target, who finished seventh, was ridden again by Jay Ford who said: “It was a very below-par performance from him.

“He travelled well off the two leaders early on but when I asked him for an effort he could not go faster.

“And when he came off the bridle he was pretty much going up and down in the same spot.

“He had worked very well beforehand but it wasn’t to be.”

Falkirk, the 13th home, was partnered by Johnny Murtagh who declared: “He was disappointing.

“He changed his legs a couple of times and might have been feeling the ground today.”

Race 5 - Heathavon Stud EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes - Winning Quotes

MEDLEY FOR HER MAJESTY

Medley was a popular Royal-owned winner of the Heathavon Stud EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes.

The 8/15 favourite scored in decisive fashion in the hands of Ryan Moore and the Danehill Dancer filly could now be heading to Ascot again.

Winning trainer Richard Hannon said: “She’s a very decent filly and has won well, even though we thought the ground might be a bit fast for her today.

“This was a good place to lose her maiden at, particularly after she ran well in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot (finished 4th).

“I think Medley would be equally effective over six or seven furlongs and we will now look at the Princess Margaret Stakes at Ascot in a couple of weeks for her.”

RACE SIX: THE COMMUNITY UNION FOR SAFER BETTING SHOPS NURSERY HANDICAP
WINNER QUOTES

EDDIE JOCK READY FOR ‘PASTA RUN’

Michael Bell may consider stepping Eddie Jock up for a crack at an Italian Listed race after a length win in the Community Union For Safer Betting Shops Nursery Handicap.

The Almutawakel gelding followed up a fast-ground Brighton win over six furlongs with a comfortable enough triumph over seven.

Jockey Jamie Spencer got a decent tune out of Bell’s charge, who always looked like holding Ebn Reem’s late bid.

Newmarket trainer Bell said: “We’ve all sorts of plans. We may go to Italy for a Listed race - a day out, a pasta run!

“He is a tough progressive horse, who loves fast ground and stays well.

“Basically, he is transformed because he is a right scamp. There is a lesson to be learnt!”

Race 6 - Community Union For Safer Betting Shops Nursery - Placed Quotes

JARVIS PLEASED

Michael Jarvis expressed his satisfaction with the performance of Ebn Reem, beaten a length by Eddie Jock in the Community Union For Safer Betting Shops Nursery.

The master of Kremlin Stables said: “I was pleased with that performance and it was certainly much better than his last run at Wolverhampton on the all-weather.

“Hopefully, we can find a race for him now.”

Looking back to the Group Two Weatherbys Superlative Stakes, where 13/8 favourite Champlain finished last of the seven runners, Jarvis commented: “He scoped as clean as a gun barrel afterwards and as yet we have no explanation of why he ran badly.”

Race 7 - THE EGERTON HOUSE STABLES HANDICAP - WINNING QUOTES

BEST A GOOD PROSPECT

Best Prospect landed the Egerton House Stables Handicap, the concluding race of the 2006 Ritz Club July Festival at Newmarket, in impressive fashion by a length from Top Seed.

The winner, partnered by Jamie Spencer, had made the long trip down from the Darlington yard of Michael Dods and his representative Ross Carson remarked: “That was very nice, we are really pleased. That’s 23 winners for us this season and things are now going well after a bit of a slow start to the season.

“I think this is a horse with a future. He is only four and is still not totally furnished.

“He also has an attitude to die for.

“The step up to a mile and a half has really suited him today.

“I think in time he might make a hurdler although whether or not that will be for us, I don’t know.”

GOING FOR RITZ CLUB JULY FESTIVAL HONOURS

DETTORI GUNNING FOR TOP JOCK HONOUR

The race to finish top jockey and top trainer at the 2006 Ritz Club July Festival concludes this afternoon with Frankie Dettori and Kerrin McEvoy in pole position for the riders’ honour.

The Godolphin retained duo have each registered two successes so far this week, with both men having three Newmarket bookings today.

Dettori looks to hold fair claims with all three of his rides. He is on Charlie Farnsbarns in the Weatherbys Superlative Stakes, Easy Air in the Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup and Iffraaj in the Darley July Cup.

McEvoy takes the mount on Louie Louie in the opening Curtis Medical Centres Handicap, Bahiano in the Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup and the outsider Excusez Moi in the Darley July Cup.

Champion jockey Jamie Spencer has one victory to his name after two days but has an interesting book of rides that could see him propelled to leading jockey for the Festival.

Leningrad is a decent each-way mount in the first, while the progressive Zidane is the favourite for the Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup. Silkie Smooth is in with shout in the Heathavon Stud EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes, while Eddie Jock may start the Community Union For Safer Betting Shops Nursery at the head of the market. Best Prospect concludes Spencer’s afternoon in the Egerton House Stables Handicap.

Jeremy Noseda and David Elsworth top the leading trainers’ table with two wins, but neither have July Course runners this afternoon.

That could leave the door open for Mick Channon and Clive Brittain, both of whom have nailed one Festival success to date and are well represented in the seven-race card.

West Ilsley handler Channon has six runners, with perhaps Top Seed in the last being his best chance of a winner.

Brittain, who struck in the Group One UAE Equestrian And Racing Federation Falmouth Stakes on Wednesday, sends out Bahiano and the nicely-backed Akona Matata for the Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup, with Excusez Moi in the Darley July Cup.

GOING NEWS AT 10.00am

The going for the third and final day of the Ritz Club July Festival remains:

GOOD TO FIRM (WATERED)

Michael Prosser, Newmarket’s Clerk of the Course, reported: “The going remains good to firm (watered).

“We applied four millimetres of water to the last five furlongs last night and there was no overnight rain.

“The forecast is for a dry day today with sunny spells and the temperatre should be around 23 degrees Celsius.

“I am extremely pleased with how the Ritz Club July Festival has gone this week and hopefully today, Darley July Cup day, will be another great day and provide the highlight of an excellent meeting.”

BETTING NEWS

In the opening Curtis Medical Centres Handicap (1.30pm), Louie Louie is the one for money, coming into 15/2 (from 10/1) with Coral, 9/1 (from 11/1) with totesport and 8/1 (from 10/1) with Paddy Power. Paddy Power have also trimmed Regal Royale to 3/1 (from 4/1), while William Hill have cut the same horse to 11/4 (from 4/1).

Several horses are coming in for support in the Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup (2.35pm), no more so than Pricewise selection Akona Matata who is now 7/1(from 8/1) with Coral, 6/1 (from 15/2) with Paddy Power, 6/1 (from 8/1) with totesport and 13/2 (from 8/1) with Stan James. Mine, also put up by Pricewise and winner of this race in 2002 and 2005, is now 10/1 (from 12/1) with both Stan James and Paddy Power. Outsider Traytonic is now 40/1 (from 66/1) with Coral while Easy Air is into 6/1 (from 7/1) with totesport and 13/2 (from 7/1) with Paddy Power. Favourite Zidane is on the slide with Stan James, easing out to 11/2 (from 4/1).

Today sees the Ritz Club July Festival reach its climax with the Darley July Cup (3.10pm) and Australian raider Takeover Target is now 4/1 (from 9/2) with Paddy Power and Coral. Godolphin’s Iffraaj, another Pricewise selection, is now 13/2 (from 7/1) with Paddy Power, 6/1 (from 8/1) with William Hill, 6/1 (from 13/2) with Stan James, 6/1 (from 15/2) with totesport and 6/1 (from 7/1) with Coral. Clive Brittain sprung a 50/1 shock earlier this week with Rajeem in the UAE Equestrian & Racing Federation Falmouth Stakes and punters have latched on to his outsider Excusez Moi, with Stan James cutting the mount of Kerrin McEvoy into 66/1 (from 80/1).
