RITZ CLUB JULY FESTIVAL 2006
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
SECOND DAY, THURSDAY, JULY 13

WATERING AFTER RACING

Clerk of the course Michael Prosser reported that he will put four millimetres of water on the last five furlongs of the July Course after today’s racing.

He said: “This is to maintain decent fast ground with the going description of good to firm.

“The forecast for early on tomorrow is mist which will clear, giving us another warm day of 23/24 degrees Celsius.”

Preview: Weatherbys Superlative Stakes

GET SET FOR ANOTHER STUNNING SUPERLATIVE

The last two winners of the Weatherbys Superlative Stakes tell you all you need to know about the growing stature of the race, staged as a Group Two for the first time this year.

Two years ago saw Dubawi enhance his credentials with victory, while 12 months ago it was Horatio Nelson, who announced himself on the big stage with a fluent success.

Both colts went on to taste Group One glory, with Dubawi becoming a Classic winner in the 2005 Irish 2,000 Guineas.

So what should we expect from this year’s renewal? All the indications suggest another top-class race with a select field of seven runners due to do battle.

Champlain heads into the contest as the very impressive winner of the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot last month. This morning his trainer Michael Jarvis declared his charge to be in good heart.

The Newmarket handler said: “We have been pleased with him since Ascot. He has been in good heart and worked nicely. He seems to like fast ground and he’ll go there in good form.”

Charlie Farnsbarns will be paying his second visit to the July Course, having broken his maiden tag on it three weeks ago. Trainer Brian Meehan now steps the Cape Cross colt up in trip and class for his return to the track, and Frankie Dettori has the mount.again.

He’s A Decoy is entitled to maximum respect, arriving unbeaten after two races, the second of which saw him prevail by two lengths in a Cork Listed event. David Wachman’s charge is also stepping up to seven furlongs tomorrow when he will be partnered by Mick Kinane.

Aidan O’Brien, twice successful in the race thanks to Thady Quill and Horatio Nelson, sends Admiralofthefleet across the Irish Sea. The Danehill colt comprehensively won a six-furlong maiden at Gowran Park on his last outing and Johnny Murtagh has been booked.

Hinton Admiral, a winner of a Hamilton maiden on his debut, represents Mark Johnston’s Middleham yard, while the John Gosden-trained Rallying Cry will bid to build on his comfortable seven-furlong debut success over course and distance on July 1.

Halicarnassus, who dead-heated to share a course and distance maiden three weeks ago, will seek to emerge victorious in his own right tomorrow.

FIRST RACE: THE BAHRAIN TROPHY
WINNER QUOTES

YOUMZAIN PUTS BEST FOOT FORWARD

Youmzain put the memory of a troublesome passage in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot behind him to record a length success in the Bahrain Trophy.

Jockey Tony Culhane had the 3-1 chance travelling sweetly at the rear before coming to collar the favourite Degas Art a furlong out.

The Sinndar colt stretched clear, although Jadalee put in some good late work to cut back the victory margin.

Trainer Mick Channon said: “The wheels fell off at Ascot. He was my nap but he got knocked over. That’s horseracing.

“He has done it nicely today. I just really wanted to get him back on the track and he is alright. I always thought he was.

“I think he has got a future - he’ll be better next year. He has got a turn of foot and can quicken off a good pace. Over a mile-and-a-half you can usually find races for that type of horse.

“He is in the (Ladbrokes) St Leger (York, September 9) but we will see. There is a lot of racing between now and then.

“There’s the (Ladbrokes) Great Voltigeur (York, August 22)...the March Stakes (Goodwood) I would not be against running him in the Gordon (Goodwood, August 1) but I’ve got others that might go for that like Championship Point.”

Bahrain Trophy Quotes

TONY CULHANE - WINNING JOCKEY YOUMZAIN

Tony Culhane, the winning jockey on Youmzain, said: "He travelled well.

“He's a talented horse - he got knocked over at Ascot and so I looked after him there.

“Today my only concern was the pace, and where it was going to come from, but two or three wanted to make it so it was OK.”

Race 1 - Bahrain Trophy (Listed) - Jockeys’ reaction to ground & placed quotes

JOCKEYS REACTION TO GROUND

Jockeys of the first four horses home in the Listed Bahrain Trophy were universal in their praise of the ground conditions on day two of the Ritz Club July Festival.

Tony Culhane, rider of Youmzain (1st): “It’s beautiful ground.”

Martin Dwyer, rider of Jadalee (2nd): “Good ground.”

John Egan, rider of Degas Art (3rd): “Well-watered.”

Richard Hughes, rider of Private Business (4th): “The same as yesterday.”

TREGONING OUT OF LUCK

Marcus Tregoning was left wondering what might have been after Jadalee finished second, beaten a length, in Thursday’s opening Listed Bahrain Trophy after the son of Desert Prince did not receive the clearest of runs in the closing stages.

The Lambourn hander said: “I’m happy in that he’s run well but I think if he had got a better run, he would have gone very close.

“As regards the future it’s a case of watch this space - we have no immediate plans for him.

“We certainly know he stays very well.”

Race 2 - TNT July Stakes - Winning Quotes

STRATEGIC PRINCE PRODUCES EXPLOSIVE RUN TO LAND TNT JULY STAKES

Strategic Prince came with a stunning late run in the final furlong to lift the two-year-old highlight of day two of the Ritz Club July Festival, the £70,000 TNT July Stakes, by a length and three quarters from Armigerent.

The 16/1 winner - owned by HRH Sultan Ahmad Shah, trained by Paul Cole and ridden by Eddie Ahern - had previously won a Salisbury maiden and was subsequently fifth in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Paul Cole commented: “He won well at Salisbury but didn’t really learn very much.

“At Ascot he was drawn wide and Frankie Dettori said he was never really concentrating.

“I was happy enough with his run at Ascot and felt he might have been placed with a better draw.

“He was actually supposed to have run in the Coventry Stakes at Ascot but there was a hiccup with the entries, which is still being investigated, and we had to go for the Norfolk instead.

“His half-brother Yorkshire was unlucky in the Melbourne Cup and he is also related to Riyadian, but this horse has speed.

“We will now look at Goodwood for him.

“Six furlongs is his trip at the moment but I’m sure he would stay seven as well.

“The extra furlong today certainly helped him.”

“I thought his form looked good and he had a decent chance. One or two of the others had question marks against them and he shouldn’t have been that price.”

Bookmakers quote Strategic Choice at 20/1 (Cashmans), 25/1 (Paddy Power) and 33/1 (Stan James and William Hill) for the 2007 Stan James 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

TNT July Stakes Quotes

EDDIE AHERN - WINNING JOCKEY STRATEGIC PRINCE

Eddie Ahern, the winning jockey on Strategic Prince, said: "Six furlongs suits him on that ground and he picked up really well.

“He ran well in the Norfolk Stakes considering he was badly drawn. Today he had a nice draw and I didn't have to make him do anything - once I took him to the outside he picked up and gave me a nice feel.

“The extra furlong was the key. He showed plenty of pace when I rode him on his debut at Salisbury over five furlongs and I did like him that day."

SECOND RACE: THE TNT JULY STAKES
REACTION QUOTES

HANNON TEAM HAPPY WITH DAZED

Dazed And Amazed followed up a Newbury Listed success with a creditable fourth-placed effort in the Group Two TNT July Stakes.

Richard Hannon Jnr, assistant to his father Richard, said: “He ran well. The ground may just have been a little quick for him.

“We will probably now look at something like the Richmond Stakes (at Goodwood) or something like that.”

Jamie Spencer, rider of disappointing 4/6 favourite Hoh Mike, said: “He ran badly - simple as that.”

Blandford Bloodstock Joss Collins Handicap
Winner Quotes

FORMAL DECREE COMPLETES THREE-TIMER

Formal Decree rattled up a third straight success when scoring with a length and a quarter in hand in the Blandford Bloodstock Joss Collins Handicap.

Trainer Alan Swinbank was thrilled with the 3/1 favourite who is unlikely to take up his engagement in Saturday’s John Smith’s Cup at York.

Swinbank said: “He is going the right way and is as good as we thought he was.

“He has been working with some good horses at home. He has been working with Ouninpohja and horses like that.

“He is maybe not quite as good as them, of course. But we’ve been lucky enough to get a horse like him.

“I wouldn’t have thought he would run on Saturday. We will see what he is like in the morning.

“He is a lazy sort of horse and I’ve always said that he is going to be a mile and four plus horse.

“He has come out today and done us his job the right way. He is only a three-year-old and away we go.

“Hopefully, there will be another good race in him; I am sure there will be. We’ll just try and win as many nice races as we possible can and keep him sound.

“You wouldn’t want very, very firm ground with him. Give him four or five weeks and work away from there, really.

“He’s a big horse for firm ground, although you get away with it here.”

More Blandford Bloodstock Joss Collins Handicap Quotes

JAMIE SPENCER - WINNING JOCKEY FORMAL DECREE

Jamie Spencer, the winning jockey on Formal Decree, commented: “They went very fast and once I got him going I thought I was getting there too soon, but I didn't want to cut down on the rails as I was afraid I wouldn't get him going again.

“He's really too big to be a Flat horse. He's got such a massive stride and a mile and a half will be no bother to him.

“These handicaps aren't easy to win and he's as good as Arcalis was at this stage, probably better.

“He ran around in front but I think that was because he is a big horse on firm ground. Good ground and a mile and a half and you'll see the best of him.”

Race 3 - Blandford Bloodstock Joss Collins Handicap - Placed Quotes

PORTERS AND ALCYON COULD BE GOODWOOD BOUND

Porters and Alcyon, second and third respectively in the Blandford Bloodstock Joss Collins Handicap, could both now be heading to Goodwood after running pleasing races.

Trainer Richard Hannon said of 50/1 shot Porters, beaten a length and a quarter: “I’m very happy, he ran very well.

“That was his first try at 10 furlongs and he lasted home well - I think he may possibly even get a bit a further.

“We will now try and find a race for him at Goodwood, either a handicap over a mile and a quarter or over a mile and a half.”

A further length back in third was 25/1 chance Alcyon. His handler Ed Dunlop said: “I am delighted with that run.

“That was his first run in a competitive handicap and he has run very well.

“Frankie Dettori said he will definitely get further and we will now be looking to find a race over further at Goodwood for him.”

Race 4 - Princess of Wales’s wbx.com Stakes - Winning Quotes

SOAPY CLEANS UP

Soapy Danger, winner of the two-mile Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot last month, demonstrated his versatility when seeing off more seasoned rivals in the £90,000 Group Two Princess of Wales’s wbx.com Stakes.

The winner was prominent throughout and showed true determination to prove three-quarters of a length too powerful for Mountain High in the hands of Kevin Darley with Enforcer a further three-quarters of a length back in third.

Winning trainer Mark Johnston said: “That was fantastic.

“On pedigree you could make a case for him staying two miles or much shorter.

“He has such a great attitude and I think that helps him get home.

“Today was experimental and showed us that we can come back in trip with him.

“He’s still in the King George and that was also an ideal Leger trial. We have several options - it’s a nice position to be in!

“At Royal Ascot, we had to keep him and Linas Selection apart and that is why he ran over two miles in the Queen’s Vase. Mr Jacobs (husband of owner Renata Jacobs) wasn’t keen to do this initially but it worked out well.”

Bookmakers reacted by making Soapy Danger 20/1 (Paddy Power, VC Bet) and 25/1 (Stan James and William Hill) for the King George. Sponsors Ladbrokes make Soapy Danger 5/1 second favourite for the St Leger behind 4/1 shot Septimus.

More Princess of Wales's wbx.com Stakes Quotes

KEVIN DARLEY - WINNING JOCKEY SOAPY DANGER

Kevin Darley, the winning jockey on Soapy Danger, said: "He's a real honest horse this fellow!

“It's taken a while for the penny to drop with him, because he's so laid back, but as you saw today, he's getting there.

“He travelled up better than he usually does, and when I opened up at the four he had them all stretched.

“Coming out of the dip I thought they might get me with a turn of foot, but he stuck his neck out and battled really well.

“I think after that he could well be a St Leger horse - he's an exciting prospect and still learning."

RACE FOUR: THE PRINCESS OF WALES’S wbx.com STAKES
PLACE QUOTES

SECOND AND THIRD BEATEN BY ‘IMPROVER’

Connections of the runner-up and third in the Princess Of Wales’s wbx.com Stakes felt that they had run into a younger horse on the upgrade.

Today’s runner-up Mountain High prevailed in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot last month with Enforcer back in third on that occasion.

Enforcer got to within three-quarters of a length of his Ascot conqueror but neither of them were a match for Soapy Danger.

Ryan Moore, who rode Mountain High, said: “He ran alright but he has got beaten by an improver.”

William Muir, trainer of third-placed Enforcer, said: “He has finished closer to Mountain High today than he did at Ascot. He has run well.

“I thought at one point that he was going to pick up and beat them but he has just flattened off.

“If he is right, we will still go the King George. I certainly wouldn’t be frightened of that.

“If we decide to wait, there’s a Group One in Cologne on September 24 or a Group Three in Deauville. So there are plenty of options.”

RACE FIVE: THE CAPANNELLE RACECOURSE EBF NOVICE STAKES
WIN QUOTES

SUPER HAMOODY STRIKES

Hamoody, the 2/1 favourite, showed a clean pair of heels to his rivals inside the final furlong to land the Capannelle Racecourse EBF Novice Stakes.

The Johannesburg colt ran a little keenly through the early paces but came with a stunning run on the outer to settle the issue in a matter of strides at the furlong pole.

He stretched clear in pleasing fashion to strike by two lengths from Romanov Dynasty.

It was the latest victory for the ownership duo of Saleh Al Homaizi and Imad Al Sagar, who have this enjoyed triumphs with Araafa, Tariq and Aeroplane.

Victorious trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam said: “They didn’t go quick enough early on for him. He will be better at seven furlongs.

“I think he is a very good horse - more than useful. I will step him up to seven furlongs but I don’t know where yet.

“He has very lucky owners - I hope they keep their luck for a long, long time.”

Impressed jockey Alan Munro added: “He is nice type and has a good future in front of him.”

Richard Hannon, trainer of the runner-up Romanov Dynasty, said: “He is a very nice horse and will improve for that run.

“We will now probably try and find a maiden for him. His main target this season will hopefully be the Goffs Million at The Curragh in September.”

Race 6 - Gist Handicap - Winning Quotes

“CHARACTER” MERSEY SOUND WINS AGAIN

Eight-year-old Mersey Sound recorded the seventh winner of his career when taking the Gist Handicap by a length and a half from Our Monogram.

The gelding’s trainer David Elsworth said: “What can I say? He really is one of life’s characters.

“He always had ability, he was once a possible for the Derby after he finished third to Nayef at Newbury.

“He didn’t live up to the expectations we had of him at one stage but is a good old boy who has given us a lot of fun.

“We had him down at Whitsbury and he also had a year with Sylvester Kirk before we came to Newmarket with him - I think new hotels motivate him!

“It is always great fun having a winner at this meeting - we’re insufferable winners!”

RACE SIX: THE GIST HANDICAP
PLACE QUOTES

BEATEN CONNECTIONS DELIGHTED
IN DEFEAT

Our Monogram finished in the frame for the third race on the trot and connections were more than satisfied.

The runner-up’s trainer Ralph Beckett said: “He has run a cracker again - he keeps finding.

“He ran up to his best. We’ll now see how he comes out of this. There is a race for him at Glorious Goodwood - the two-mile, five-furlong handicap. We’ll maybe think about that - he’ll get that trip, no problems.”

Paul D’Arcy, trainer of the third-placed Ti Adora, said: “That’s the first time we’ve tried her over two miles and she probably didn’t stay.

“We’ll bring her back in trip but that’s two races in eight days for her, so we’ll give her a little rest now.”

RACE SEVEN: THE CLASSIC FM HANDICAP
WINNER QUOTES

LOCAL WINNER IN THE LAST

Matsunosuke provided local trainer Alan Coogan with a thrill when sprinting to success in the last.

The four-year-old gelding, sent off a 16-1 chance, came with a rattling run inside the last furlong to score by a length-and-a-half from Handsome Cross. It was rider Darryll Holland’s 50th winner of the year.

It was Soham-based Coogan’s first-ever winner on the July Course with his only Flat horse currently in training.

He said: “He is a very decent animal but the ground is of paramount importance to him.

“He is a better horse on a good track like this where he grabs the soil and it propels him forward,
“He has won fairly comfortably there. We’ll think about something next week for him,

“There is an £18,000 race that’s a possibility for him next week at Pontefract.”

Race 7 - Classic FM Handicap - Placed Quotes/Other News

NICHOLLS PLEASED

Trainer David Nicholls expressed his satisfaction with the performances of Handsome Cross and Fast Heart, second and third respectively, in the concluding Classic FM Handicap.

The Yorkshire handler said: “I’d have been happier if they’d won but they have both run good races and will now probably go to Goodwood.”

CROWD

Today’s crowd came to 8,832 (8,943 in 2005)

DWYER SIGNED OFF

Martin Dwyer was signed off by the doctor and missed his final two rides of the day after suffering from dehydration.

CLIVE BRTTAIN HAPPY WITH RAJEEM AFTER YESTERDAY’S SUCCESS

Clive Brittain sent out Rajeem to win the Group One UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation Falmouth Stakes at 50/1 yesterday.

He commented today: “When I weighed her this morning she had lost just one kilo.

“I’ve always known that this filly was a Group One sort. We have a useful handicapper called Nice Tune and before Royal Ascot they finished upsides when working, with Rajeem just having the edge.

“I worked them on Sunday morning with my two very experienced work riders and they set off at a good pace. Rajeem went past Nice Tune by eight lengths and Nice Tune did not work badly - it was just that Rajeem worked brilliantly.

“Rajeem has had lots of problems. It was touch and go that we would have her ready for Royal Ascot (when fifth in the Coronation Stakes).”

GOING NEWS AT 10.00am

The going for the second day of the Ritz Club July Festival is:

GOOD TO FIRM (WATERED)

Michael Prosser, Newmarket’s Clerk of the Course, reported: “The going is currently good to firm (watered).

“The forecast is for a dry day today. The cloud should break up by around noon and this afternoon should be sunny with temperatures of around 22 - 23 degrees Celsius.

“Tomorrow is also predicted to be dry with temperatures reaching 23 - 24 degrees Celsius.

“Last night we watered the final six furlongs and also the section between the 10-furlong and the mile start.”

BETTING NEWS

The Blandford Bloodstock Joss Collins Handicap (2.35pm) has seen a number of horses attracting support.

Military Cross is now 7/1 (from 9/1) with Stan James, 13/2 (from 8/1) with totesport and 15/2 (from 8/1) with VC Bet.

totepool turnover up at Newmarket yesterday

2006 - totepool turnover - £307,221 - Wednesday, July 12, 2006

2005 - totepool turnover - £305,711

Up £1,510 or 0.5%

Tote spokesman Damian Walker said: “We're pleased with these figures which are in line with the increase in crowd numbers.”

Clive Brittain's 50/1 winner Rajeem knocked out all of the Jackpot punters and a huge rollover of £74,302 goes forward to Newmarket today.

Walker added: “The Jackpot looked difficult yesterday and so it proved but, with a couple very short-priced favourites today and smaller fields, many people will fancy their chances.”

HANCOCK THRILLED BY RECORD CROWD

Yesterday saw a magnificent opening day for the Ritz Club July Festival and the July Course at Newmarket was packed with enthusiastic racegoers.

Yesterday’s record attendance figure, 14,512, was fractionally up on last year’s crowd of 14,476 on the opening day.

Lisa Hancock, managing director of Newmarket Racecourses, said: “The Ritz Club July Festival has got off to the best possible start with a modern-day record crowd. The racing has been very competitive, while the weather has been magnificent.

“The wonderful fashions that we have seen on Jaeger Ladies Day have also contributed to a memorable opening to the festival.”

KELLY STEALS SHOW ON JAEGER LADIES DAY

Kelly McLaughlan emerged as a local winner of the Jaeger Best Dressed Lady competition yesterday. From Newmarket, she won a £1,000 Jaeger voucher as well as a hat and a goodie bag.

THIS IS AN EXTRACT OF A RELEASE ISSUED BY NEWMARKET RACECOURSES A WEEK AGO

NEWMARKET RACECOURSES MEDIA RELEASE
for immediate release, Thursday, July 6, 2006

........BRITTAIN RATES RAJEEM NO BACK NUMBER
......................

Clive Brittain is looking forward to a big effort from Rajeem in the Group One UAE Equestrian And Racing Federation Falmouth Stakes on the first day of the July Festival, Wednesday, July 12.

The filly heads to the £200,000 mile contest off the back of a good fifth in the Group One Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, just under four lengths by the winner Nannina, who could reoppose at Newmarket.

Brittain reported this morning: "Rajeem is a definite runner, all being well. She's come out of Ascot very well, and she certainly ran a cracking race there. She acted on fast ground that day and she's won in soft, so the ground wouldn't be a factor for her."

The Diktat filly won the Listed EBF Montrose Fillies' Stakes on the Rowley Mile in October and was beaten only three-quarters of a length when fifth to Atlantic Waves over nine furlongs of the same course in the Listed Connaught Access Flooring Feilden Stakes on April 20.

Rajeem ran below par in the Group Two German 1,000 Guineas at Dusseldorf on April 30, finishing a distant eighth behind Lolita, and, as a result, went off at huge odds at Royal Ascot.

The Newmarket handler revealed: "She lost 29 kilos in Germany and was in season when she got there, so we basically wrote that race off. The fact that she lost as much weight as that and didn't get a particularly hard race shows that she wasn't right.

"She was never in the race to win, so she wasn't knocked around at all, and it took the best part of six weeks to put her back together again, but she showed at Ascot that she retains her form.

"I would say she'd have a good shout going into this race on her Ascot form. She won't be 150/1, put it that way."

The three-day Ritz Club July Festival takes place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, July 12 to 14, at Newmarket's July Course.

Statement on behalf of Kieren Fallon

"I am deeply disappointed by the refusal of the HRA to overturn my suspension from riding in the UK. I will now take the matter to the High Court, and beyond if necessary, to reinstate my rights to earn a living in the UK and participate in the sport that I love. Until I have the chance to prove my innocence in court, it is grossly unfair that I am being denied a living in Britain."

KIEREN FALLON APPEAL BOARD HEARING RESULT

The Appeal Board of the Horseracing Regulatory Authority (HRA) on 12th and 13th July 2006 considered an appeal by Kieren Fallon, the holder of a Flat Race Jockey's Licence issued by the Irish Turf Club, against the decision of a Special Panel of the HRA (the 'Panel') to make an order under Rule 1 (A) (xxv) prohibiting him from riding in races in Great Britain until the conclusion of the criminal proceedings against him or further order.

The appellant's grounds for appeal were that:

1) The decision had the effect of denying him his right to earn a living, and would also effectively end his career as a leading jockey and is disproportionate and accordingly unlawful.
2) The Panel erred in law in declining to take into account any evidence and/or submissions on behalf of the Appellant in respect of the underlying criminal charges which were the basis for the HRA's decision to prohibit him.

On 3rd July 2006, Kieren Fallon was charged by the City of London Police, along with fellow jockeys Fergal Lynch and Darren Williams, with conspiracy to defraud.

Consequent to the conditions placed on the licences of Lynch and Williams, their jockeys' licences immediately expired and it fell to them to make applications for the HRA to reissue them. Kieren Fallon is licensed in Ireland (which would normally permit him to ride in Great
Britain) and the HRA had to consider whether, in the light of the charges made against him, it should prohibit him from riding in races in Great Britain until the conclusion of his trial - a right afforded by Rule 1 (A) (xxv).

The Board received the Panel's Decision and Reasons and mindful of the serious criminal charges now outstanding against Kieren Fallon decided that the Panel's decision to decline to consider any of the presently available evidence was correct. Further, that the decision to prohibit him from riding in races in Great Britain until the conclusion of his trial or further order was justified.

The Appeal is dismissed.

The Board was asked by Kieren Fallon's representatives to provide written reasons for its decision and will produce these as soon as possible.

The Board's decision on all questions of costs or deposit is reserved.

Sir Roger Buckley - Independent Appeal Board Chairman, The Viscount Allendale, Christopher Hall

Thursday 13th July 2006

NOTES FOR EDITORS

1. Full reasons for the decision will be available in due course (hopefully tomorrow).

2. Due to the possibility of further legal proceedings, the HRA will not be able to offer further comment on this matter.
