RITZ CLUB JULY FESTIVAL 2006
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
FIRST DAY, WEDNESDAY, JULY 12

HANCOCK THRILLED BY RECORD CROWD

Newmarket Racecourses were this afternoon reflecting on a magnificent opening day at the Ritz Club July Festival that saw the July Course packed with enthusiastic racegoers.

Today’s attendance figure, 14,512, was fractionally up on last year’s crowd of 14,476 on the opening day to please managing director Lisa Hancock.

She said: “The Ritz Club July Festival has got off to the best possible start with a modern-day record crowd.

“The racing has been very competitive, while the weather has been magnificent.

“The wonderful fashions that we have seen on Jaeger Ladies Day have also contributed to a memorable opening to the festival.”

KELLY STEALS SHOW ON JAEGER LADIES DAY

Kelly McLaughlan emerged as a local winner of the Jaeger Best Dressed Lady competition.

From Newmarket, she won a £1,000 Jaeger voucher as well as a hat and a goodie bag.

PROSSER TO WATER AFTER RACING

Michael Prosser, clerk of the course at Newmarket, will turn the taps on after racing to preserve the good to firm ground.

He will add five millimetres to the final five furlongs of the July Course, while doing the same to the stretch from the 10-furlong marker to the mile pole.

Prosser said: “My aim to maintain decent fast and safe ground.”

DARLEY JULY CUP PREVIEW

CLASSIC REMATCH IN PROSPECT IN DARLEY JULY CUP

The first five home in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot are set to re-oppose in what looks a mouth-watering renewal of the Group One Darley July Cup over six furlongs on Friday
.

Les Arcs will again have to see off the challenge of Balthazaar’s Gift, the rising star of the sprinting ranks, if he is to confirm the form of the Ascot Group One.

Then there Is Australian speedball Takeover Target, third in the Golden Jubilee, to overcome once more. The seven-year-old gelding had already struck at the Royal fixture, winning the Group Two King’s Stand Stakes, to underline his sprinting credentials in impressive fashion.

And Joe Janiak’s charge looked in fine fettle when he worked on the July Course last Thursday and yesterday mornings, partnered by big-race jockey Jay Ford.

Ashdown Express can’t be ruled out, either. The Chris Wall-trained speedster has a mean turn of foot on his day and two years ago finished second in the Darley July Cup behind Frizzante and was fifth in 2005.

Trainer Kevin Ryan, who saddles Balthazaar’s Gift, will mount a double-pronged challenge, with Golden Jubilee Stakes fifth Amadeus Wolf also declared for the £360,000 contest.

Iffraaj, who was seventh on his seasonal debut in the Golden Jubilee Stakes, will bid to give Godolphin a first triumph in Europe’s richest and most prestigious sprint event.

Lambourn-based Barry Hills is another trainer hoping for a first victory in the race, with both last year’s Nunthorpe Stakes winner La Cucaracha, ninth in the King’s Stand Stakes, and Red Clubs, who is dropping back in distance, in action.

Peter Makin is planning to strike while the iron is hot with his charge Pivotal Point, who scored last Saturday at Sandown in a Group Three over the minimum trip.

As well as Takeover Target, Australia will also be represented by Falkirk, who was only beaten less than a length in the King’s Stand.

Four years ago Thirsk trainer David Nicholls saddled a memorable Darley July Cup one-two with Continent shading stable-mate Bahamian Pirate. On Friday, Nicholls relies on Moss Vale, who has two Group victories to his name already in 2006.

Mozart and Stravinsky provided Ballydoyle handler Aidan O’Brien with July Cup wins either side of 2000. This time O’Brien will send out Marcus Andronicus, who reverts to sprinting after finishing fourth in the St James’s Palace Stakes.

John Gosden won the race in 2003 when based at Manton with Oasis Dream prevailing. Now back training in Newmarket, Gosden pins his hopes on Murfreesboro. Excusez Moi, Fayr Jag, Gift Horse and the popular Quito complete the 17-strong field.

GROUND NEWS

IT’S BEAUTIFUL GROUND - DURCAN

TED DURCAN returned from the President of the UAE International Challenge Derby (for Purebred Arabian horses) to give a glowing report of the surface.

The rider of Rainbow De Faust said: “It is beautiful ground - well-watered.”

Richard Hills, the rider of Kandar Du Falgas, said: “It is good to firm.”

Martin Dwyer, who rode Magie Du Faust, added: “It feels like fast ground.”

FIRST RACE: THE RACING POST BLOODSTOCK HANDICAP

MAGNUSSON ON TARGET WITH SMART ENOUGH

SMART ENOUGH justified 9-2 favouritism when making all under Kerrin McEvoy in the opening Racing Post Bloodstock Handicap.

Trainer Mikael Magnusson won the race two years ago with Kehaar and he was on the mark again with his relatively unexposed three-year-old triumphing by a length-and-three-quarters on the stands rail.

It was a pleasing success for connections who saw their horse finish fourth behind Sir Gerard in the Britannia handicap.

Magnusson said: “I am very proud of the horse...I’m delighted with that.

“He came out of his Ascot run brilliantly. I thought he was beaten there by greenness, more than ability, so I was very hopeful today. He had worked very well before this race.

“But it is always difficult to come here when they go in two groups. You need to be on the right side, but he made it the right side.

“He is just a very nice horse. I will now look at Glorious Goodwood where he’ll have two options; the mile race (the £150,000 totesport Mile for which he gets a 3lb penalty, bringing his weight to 7st 13lb) and the 10-furlong race (the £100,000 ladbrokes.com Handicap).”

WINNING JOCKEY - KERRIN MCEVOY

Kerrin McEvoy, the winning jockey on Smart Enough, said: “It was a great run at Royal Ascot last time as he is still relatively inexperienced.

“The lack of experience cost him at Ascot - I am not saying he would have won - but he idled a little when he got there because of the big crowd.

“Today I wanted to get a lead but he was just too quick. I always in front, especially early in the race, and they got to nearly level four out and three out but then he went away again.

“It is lovely ground. They have put plenty of water on. I had a bit of walk earlier - it seems even right across - there is no jar - perfect ground.”

HANNON PLEASED, BUT RUES DRAW

Richard Hannon was pleased with the effort of second-placed Plum Pudding, who was beaten one and three-quarter lengths in the opening Racing Post Bloodstock Handicap, although he felt that his charge would have been closer with a better draw, having come out of stall three.

The Marlborough handler said: “Plum Pudding has run a sound race but was drawn on the wrong side and had nothing to race with.

“The first and third were both drawn high and that is where the pace was.

“Plum Pudding is a grand horse and has been very consistent for us.”

Second Race - totesport.com HANDICAP

DARK MISSILE FIRES HOME

The filly Dark Missile put up a game performance to prevail by a head from Mutamarres in the £85,000 totesport.com Handicap over six furlongs.

The three-year-old daughter of Night Shift is owned by Jeff Smith, trained by Andrew Balding and ridden by Martin Dwyer.

A delighted owner said: “Dark Missile is improving all the time and it’s nice to have another home-bred winner. She is going the right way.

“Her dam, Exorcet, was very fast and won a maiden at Thirsk very easily but unfortunately went wrong.

“This was a nice race to win and was a good prize - there are not many good handicaps for three-year-old sprinters.”

Trainer Andrew Balding added: “We only came here because the owner was having lunch!

“She didn’t like the kickback on the all-weather last time out at Kempton but thought we would have another crack at six furlongs as we knew she stayed six furlongs.

“I’m not sure where she will go now.

“She isn’t in the Stewards’ Cup (Goodwood, August 5). She does love soft ground and wouldn’t want to have too many races on fast ground.”

MARTIN DWYER - WINNING JOCKEY DARK MISSILE

Martin Dwyer, the winning jockey Dark Missile, said: "I thought I had won - she had her neck stretched out - but it's hard to tell where the winning line is here.

“It's a real good effort from her - Andrew's [Balding] horses are really hitting form, and she had ben running consistently, but she saved her best for the big day.

“She dug deep and is a very brave filly. I don't think the draw made any difference - it's good fast ground, there's no jar and they've done a good job."

GOLD HAPPY WITH IMPROVING MUTAMARRES

Angus Gold, racing manager to Sheikh Hamdan, was more than satisfied with the performance of second Mutamarres, who went down by only a head in a tight finish for the £85,000 totesport.com handicap.

Gold said: “I’m delighted with his run. Richard Hills said he loved the ground, showed a lot of speed, fought hard - did everything right.

“We’ll see how he comes out of the race. The main thing is that he’s improved.

“He was in the sales until a week ago, so he is going the right way.”

Hughie Morrison, trainer of third Prince Tamino, a short-head behind, said: “He has run a great race, 9st 7lb is a lot to carry. It is a pity that they don’t have a few Group Threes for three-year-olds worth that.

“I think the (Vodafone) Stewards’ Cup is still on the agenda.”

Bookmakers cut Prince Tamino’s for the big Goodwood handicap on August 5 to 10/1 from 14/1 (William Hill and VC vbet).

Jonathan Geake, trainer of fourth Ripples Maid, another short-head in arrears said: “She has run a cracking race. She might go for a Listed race in Ireland next, at the end of this month.”

THIRD RACE: THE CHIPPENHAM LODGE STUD CHERRY HINTON STAKES
WIN QUOTES

BRILLIANT SANDER PREVAILS

Sander Camillo gave a dazzling display to scorch to a five-length success in the Group Two Chippenham Lodge Stud Cherry Hinton Stakes.

The Dixie Union filly built on her Albany Stakes victory at Royal Ascot with a comprehensive demolition of her field at the July Course.

Jubilant trainer Jeremy Noseda said: “Sander Camillo is a very professional filly. She gave me the feeling that she had moved on again since Ascot.

“She has got a lot of class and speed. You sit there and feel that you have one that is extra special and you wait to see if they can do it on the racetrack.

“As soon as I started working her, I spoke to Sir Robert Ogden’s racing manager Barry Simpson and said, ‘This filly is in a different league to La Chunga (also owned by Ogden)’.

“She would get seven furlongs now. I have no doubt in my mind that she’ll get the mile - with a little bit of luck, she has got everything to go the whole way.

“She is far from the finished article at this stage. She is not just all two-year-old. Honestly, I think she would get a mile now.

“The only thing that she needs is fast ground or American dirt. I’ve had the (Breeders’ Cup) Juvenile Fillies in the back of my mind for a little while. But in the end, my main aim would be to try and win a Guineas. If the Juvenile Fillies compromised that, I don’t think we would go and do it.”

Victorious rider Frankie Dettori said: “At Newmarket on her debut it was definitely the soft ground that got her beat. She went to Ascot and did the business and she felt better here than she did there.

“She has got wonderful scope - she is not just a little pony. She is uncomplicated, can make the running or come from behind. It’s exciting.

“The trainer does the job with her - I just steer her the right way.”

Two bookmakers halved her odds for the Stan James 2000 Guineas at Newmarket next year, with William Hill going 8/1 from 16/1 and Paddy Power making her a 10/1 chance from 20/1.

Frankie Dettori - Winning Jockey Sander Camillo

Frankie Dettori, the winning jockey on Sander Camillo, said: "She's a wonderful filly and it goes without saying that she's one of the best fillies I have ridden as a two-year-old.

“Jeremy [Noseda] has always thought a lot of her and since Ascot she has improved and she gave me a tremendous feel.

“She's such a professional and can do it from in front or behind. She doesn't pull and is an ultimate racehorse.

“Without a doubt she'll get further - seven furlongs would be right up her street and she will be a lovely Guineas filly for next year."

Third Race - CHIPPENHAM LODGE STUD CHERRY HINTON STAKES - Placed Quotes

CHANNON AND HANNON BOTH PLEASED

Trainers Mick Channon and Richard Hannon both expressed their satisfaction with the efforts of Alzerra and Gilded, second and third respectively in the Group Two £70,000 Chippenham Lodge Stud Cherry Hinton Stakes.

Mick Channon said about Alzerra, who was beaten five lengths: “I thought she was alright but the winner is very good and was very impressive.

“I can only be delighted.

“Being by Pivotal and with the ground in the autumn, she might improve a bit more.

“She is as good as I’ve got, although I do have some nice seven-furlong types for later in the season.

“We will think about the Lowther Stakes at York for her but might try and avoid the winner.

“She will stay at six furlongs and we will have a look at Deauville.”

A further neck back in third was Gilded, winner of the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Her trainer Richard Hannon reported: “I am very happy - she’s run a good race.

“She is a filly who always gives her best and is a delight to train - not bad for 13,000 guineas!

“She will now go for the Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury. There she gets an 8lb penalty for winning the Queen Mary, but here she had a 3lb penalty against the very best fillies.”

Race Four - UAE EQUESTRIAN AND RACING FEDERATION FALMOUTH STAKES
- Winning Quotes

RAJEEM SPRINGS 50/1 FALMOUTH SHOCK

Clive Brittain has produced many a shock in big races over the years and the success of 50/1 shot Rajeem in the £200,000 Group One UAE Equestrian & Racing Federation Falmouth Stakes was right up there with the best of them.

The three-year-old daughter of Diktat, owned by Brittain’s long-standing patron Saeed Manana and ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, was prominent for most of the way and battled on bravely to deny Nannina by three-quarters of a length.

An ecstatic Brittain said afterwards: “It was a hot race, but she’s a hot filly! It’s a hot day so it’s all hot, hot, hot!

“She had no run last time at Royal Ascot and should have finished closer.

“Thank god for her owner Saeed Manana - he knows how I train and how I try to get into horses’ minds.

“There was no joke about today and I never get downhearted - even when I was on the ground getting kicked by a horse the other day!

“We were well prepared for today and knew we could make it or sit in behind. We have never dropped our sights with this filly - why go for a Listed when you have a Group One filly?

“Her one bad run in the German Guineas was due to her not travelling well. She lost 29kg and ran like a wet doll on bad ground - it really devastated her.

“It has taken around two months to get her right but now she is really blossoming.

“I wouldn’t be afraid of taking anything on with her now and her most likely option is now the Nassau Stakes (August 5) at Goodwood.”

“People why try and knock this race as it was won by a Clive Brittain-trained 50/1 shot and the pace was slow but I know we have a classy filly.”

This was a second Group One for Australian jockey Kerrin McEvoy for the Saeed Manana/Clive Brittain team following Warrsan’s success in the 2004 Grosser Preis Von Baden in Germany.

McEvoy said: “She’s an easy filly to ride and I was happy to be near the front on her.

“She quickened up really well from the three pole and surprised me with how much she found.

“I was waiting for the big guns to come and take her on but she kept on all the way to the line.

“I think she would have finished third at Ascot with a better run and she was unlucky there.

“Both Mr Manana and Mr Brittain have been a great help to me. Mr Brittain has supplied me with many of my outside rides this season.

“Today was a pleasant surprise and shows you have to be in it to win it.

“There was a small field and a no pace early, but she has still run a great race on the day.”

KERRIN MCEVOY - WINNING JOCKEY RAJEEM

Kerrin McEvoy, the winning jockey on Rajeem, said: “That was great - we were the outsider of the field!

“Well done to Mr Brittain and Saeed Manana. She ran well at Ascot and probably could have run third there, and it's a nice surprise today to win this race.

“She relaxed very well in front, we got an easy lead and she quickened up really well.

“We probably had the race run [to suit] but it just goes to show you that nothing is certain in racing!”

GOSDEN POINTS TO SLOWLY-RUN RACE AFTER NANNINA REVERSE

John Gosden, trainer of second Nannina, was at pains to outline how the lack of pace early on in the Group One UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation Falmouth Stakes influenced the outcome of the race.

Gosden said: “I warned everyone on the television before that with a slowly-run race you can get funny results with small fields here at this time of the year.

“You get bigger fields, they are all there and having a go, then they sort themselves out.

“It was a very slow time on fast ground. This is a filly who likes pace in front of her and it didn’t happen today. She has run very well, mind you. But it was a little bit of an unusual style of race.

“It has turned into a little sprint. I think both the favourite and the second favourite were really beaten by the pace and a good tactical ride on Clive’s filly to get the job done.

“Nannina is in races like the Prix d’Astarte (a Group One for three-year-old fillies and upwards over a straight mile at Deauville on July 30) and the Sussex Stakes (Goodwood, August 2) . So there are plenty of options.”

James Fanshawe, trainer of the 6/5 favourite Soviet Song who finished sixth and is a two-time winner of the race - said: “Last year was a similar sort of race, no pace and she really picked up.

“Today, she didn’t. She usually picks up off a slow pace. I always thought she was a different class of filly to Musicanna, who finished third - so she hasn’t given her running today.

“We will see how she comes out of the race. We were hoping she would produce a similar performance to Ascot (where she won the Group Two Windsor Forest Stakes) but she didn’t, so we’ll have to go and check things out.”

FIFTH RACE: THE STRUTT & PARKER EBF MAIDEN
WIN QUOTES

NOSEDA AT THE DOUBLE - KALGOORLIE ADDS TO SANDER SUCCESS

Newmarket handler Jeremy Noseda recorded a 2-1 double on the opening day of the Ritz Club July Festival when Kalgoorlie’s seven-furlong Strutt & Parker success followed up Sander Camillo’s earlier victory in the Cherry Hinton Stakes.

The Gone West colt, fourth on his last start in the Coventry, got the judge’s verdict by a short head after a three-way bob with second-placed Safe Investment and Many Volumes.

Noseda’s charge tried to make most before appearing to be fractionally headed by Many Volumes. But he dug deep to rally strongly and just had enough in the tank to hold off the late thrust of Safe Investment.

Noseda said: “I’m a little disappointed that he has made hard work of what I thought could be a simple job for him.

“But it is about the way the race was run. To me, he is a horse, that needs to be in a fast-run race and covered up.

“I think we will stick to the plan and have a crack at the Champagne Stakes at Goodwood as long as the ground is fast. We’ll see how we go from there.”

Race Six - EBF Racing Post Fillies’ Handicap - Winning Quotes

HEAVEN SENT BATTLES TO VICTORY

Newmarket trainer Sir Michael Stoute is always a man to follow at the Ritz Club July Festival and he enjoyed his first win at the 2006 meeting when the Cheveley Park Stud-owned Heaven Sent battled to a length and a quarter victory over Jeanmarie in the EBF Racing Post Fillies’ Handicap in the hands of Ryan Moore.

The master of Freemason Lodge commented: “I was pleased with Heaven Sent today.

“I think she is equally effective over a seven furlongs or a mile.

“At the moment, she is just a handicapper and we will see how she progresses from here.”

Chris Richardson, Managing Director of Cheveley Park Stud, added: “She’s a talented filly.

“Her full-sister Megahertz is a very good filly in America and a three-time Grade One winner but unfortunately we sold her.

“Heaven Sent is a May foal and improving. I think she should get a mile.

“Today, she was bumped three times but battled on and still won. We were a bit disappointed with her last time at Ayr where she didn’t seem to show much spirit but there was nothing wrong with her performance today.”

Looking back to the UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation Falmouth Stakes, where the stud’s Nannina finished second and Peeress fourth, Richardson added: “The slow early pace didn’t suit Nannina and the ground was a bit quick for Peeress.

“Peeress is entered in the Sussex Stakes but wouldn’t run if the ground was fast. We will talk with Sir Michael and look at something like the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville for her.

“Nannina isn’t in the Sussex Stakes so would need to be supplemented if we want to run her.”

SEVENTH RACE: THE KLEINWORT BENSON MAIDEN STAKES
WIN QUOTES

PROCTER STRIKES ON ZAIF

The Tony Procter revival continued with a hard-earned success on Zaif in the concluding Kleinwort Benson Maiden Stakes.

Procter rode his first winner of the decade last month, partnering Foodbroker Founder to victory at Stratford over flights.

And this afternoon the three-pound claimer secured a Flat triumph on board the 14-1 shot.

Victorious trainer David Elsworth said: “He has been in self-exile until I resurrected him. He was with David Loder and I inherited him back. Tony had his first winner for me on a 15-year-old when he was himself 15.

“He’s riding a few for me again and, look, he is riding winners at the age of 31.He is a very good rider and has always had talent.”

Elsworth added: “This is a young horse with a future. He has got a rating of 84, so he is not well handicapped. We were as well to run him in a maiden as a handicap.”

Race 7 - Kleinwort Benson Maiden Stakes - Placed Quotes

EDDERY PLEASED

Trainer Pat Eddery was pleased with the performance of Garafena in the concluding 19-furlong Kleinwort Benson Maiden Stakes.

The three-year-old Golden Snake filly stayed on well under Jamie Spencer to go down to Zaif by a length and a quarter.

The former champion jockey commented: “I was very pleased with that run from Garafena.

“That’s the third time she’s been second and she has never been outside the first three. She is improving all the time.

“We will keep her at a mile and a quarter - that’s her trip and is ideal for her.

“I’m sure she will get there soon.”

“Temperatures are predicted to reach around 24 degrees today, rising to 26 by Friday.

CRACKING 86-STRONG ENTRY FOR GOODWOOD’S totesport MILE

Little Miss Gracie going for the £150,000 event

The £150,000 totesport Mile, run at Goodwood on Friday, August 4, the fourth day of the Glorious Goodwood Festival, has attracted a superb total of 86 horses, one more than in 2005, details of which are revealed today, Wednesday, July 12, 2006.

First run in 1987, the competitive mile handicap for three-year-olds and upwards is the richest contest of its type in the racing calendar, with totesport increasing the total value of the race by 50 per cent since taking over sponsorship in 2005.

The Gerard Butler-trained Nayyir has been allotted top-weight of 9st 10lb. The eight-year-old has a fabulous record at Goodwood that includes back-to-back wins in the Group Two Betfair Cup in 2002 and 2003, and a close second to Soviet Song in the Group One Cantor Spreadfair Sussex Stakes in 2004, a race in which he was also fourth a year later.

The strongest hands numerically are held by Barry Hills and Mick Channon, who are responsible for five entries each. Hills, trainer of 1988 scorer Strike Force, has entered Dabbers Ridge (8st 11lb), Paper Talk (8st 9lb), Giganticus (8st 1lb), Muzher (7st 8lb) and Jihaaz (7st 5lb), while Channon, yet to take the prize, has Upper Hand (8st 9lb), Capable Guest (8st 7lb), South Cape (7st 11lb) Guest Connections (7st 9lb) and Music Note (7st 6lb) entered.

Rookie trainer Andrew Haynes is hoping that his smart filly Little Miss Gracie (8st 12lb) can give him the biggest win of his career in the totesport Mile ahead of a possible tilt at the Norwegian Derby.

The four-year-old ran her best race of the season when the four-length fourth to Pout in the Group Two Ridgewood Pearl Stakes over a mile at the Curragh on May 27, and subsequently finished second to Squaw Dance over the same trip at Hamilton on June 29.

Haynes revealed: “The plan is to go straight for the totesport Mile, that’s the aim, and she’s fine in herself after Hamilton.

“Her Irish form reads well. Royal Alchemist was only half a length in front of her at the Curragh, and I know she was used as a pacemaker in the Coral Eclipse, but she’s a good filly in her own right.”

The Marlborough handler continued: “It’s only our second season training and we have a good young team here, so it would be a great boost to go and run a big race at Goodwood.

“She’s entered in the Norwegian Derby at the end of August. We’re not scared to go places with her. She’s been to France twice and Ireland once, so she’s a good traveller and the option is there. It’s something we’ll look at after Goodwood.”

Little Miss Gracie’s only previous visit to Goodwood saw her finish a creditable fourth in the Listed EBF Fillies’ and Mares’ Conqueror Stakes, under four lengths behind Nantyglo, on May 6.

Haynes, who worked for Richard Hannon and Paul Burgoyne before taking out a licence in 2004, is hoping the grey filly can clinch a big win before she goes through the ring at the end of the season.

He said: “She could do with a little bit of cut in the ground ideally, but you’re limited to where you can run these horses that are just below top-class.

“All being well, at the end of the year she’ll go to Newmarket Sales and hopefully someone will buy her for breeding. She’s been wonderfully consistent - she’s run 17 times and 14 times been in the first four. She was my first ever winner and I only paid £9,000 for her, so she’s been a very good investment.”

Unshakable, trained by Bob Jones, made it third time lucky when defeating Crosspeace by a neck in last year’s renewal of totesport Mile, having finished no better than eighth in two previous attempts, and could bid for a repeat victory - something no horse has managed yet - having been allotted 8st 4lb.

Royal Hunt Cup winner Cesare (9st 2lb), the 4/1 favourite when a close third a year ago, is entered again along with stablemate and fellow Royal Ascot scorer Sir Gerard (8st 8lb), impressive when taking the Britannia Handicap. Both are trained by James Fanshawe, who landed the totesport Mile in 2000 with Persiano.

Godolphin, successful in 2004 with Ancient World, subsequently successful in the Group One Premio Vittorio di Capua at San Siro in Italy, has four entries, headed by Belenus with 9st 5lb, who has experience at Goodwood having finished third in the Listed Letheby & Christopher Predominate Stakes last season. Desert Destiny (9st 1lb), Desert Chief (8st 6lb) and Familiar Territory (8st 1lb) are other possible runners for the Maktoum family’s operation.

Middleham trainer Mark Johnston, who tasted success in 1997 with Fly To The Stars, later successful in the Group One Lockinge Stakes at Newbury for Godolphin, and 2001 with Riberac, could bid for a third win with Prince Of Light (9st 2lb), Royal Island (9st), Desert Realm (8st 2lb) and Joseph Henry (7st 10lb).

Hinterland, forth in the Royal Hunt Cup, then won the totescoop6 Handicap over a mile at Sandown on July 8 for trainer Michael Jarvis and has been allotted 9st 5lb. The trainer has also entered the useful St Andrews (9st 6lb), Notability (8st 13lb), and Minister Of State (7st 10lb).

Sir Michael Stoute has a trio of contenders this year, with one-time classic hope City Of Troy set to carry 8st 7lb alongside Rohaani (8st 13lb) and Regal Royale (8st 1lb). The Freemason Lodge handler is also looking for his third victory in the totesport Mile, having struck with Safawan (1989) and Lonesome Dude (1999).

Both Pride Of Nation (8st 10lb) and Minority Report (8st 6lb) disappointed for trainer Luca Cumani in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot behind Cesare but could bid for compensation along with Akona Matata (8st 8lb), Pinpoint (8st 8lb), Forgery (8st 7lb), Red Spell (8st 6lb), Langford (8st 10lb), Tucker (8st 12lb), Stagelight (9st 4lb), Prince Of Thebes (8st 8lb), El Coto (8st 6lb), Another Bottle (8st 12lb), Blythe Knight (8st 13lb) and Shot To Fame (8st 4lb).

The United Arab Emirates supplies the one overseas-based entry in the shape of Spirit Of France (8st 8lb). Now in the care of Christian Wroe, the four-year-old gelding was formerly trained by Mark Johnston.

Goodwood’s Managing Director, Rod Fabricius, said: “The totesport Mile is a great spectacle and one of the highlights of the week at the Glorious Goodwood Festival.

“We are delighted at the number and quality of this year’s entry, which reflects the substantial boost in prize money on offer since totesport generously took over sponsorship last year.”

Damian Walker of sponsors totesport commented: “With the fantastic prize money on offer, the totesport Mile is always a tremendously competitive and exciting contest, and one of the hottest betting races all week at Glorious Goodwood.

“This year’s renewal looks like developing into a fascinating affair with a host of big names entered and top trainers represented.”

Prices will be issued by totesport shortly.
