THE JULY MEETING
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
THIRD DAY, NEWMARKET, THURSDAY, JULY 8, 2004

Three-Day Attendance Up

This year’s three-day attendance figure at the July Meeting of 31,274 was a new record, up on the 2003 total crowd of 30,711.

Lisa Hancock, Managing Director of Newmarket Racecourses, said: “It’s been a fantastic three days, with top-class racing from start to finish and another increase in the three-day attendance.

“The horrendous weather forecast saw the crowd dip today which wasn’t a surprise, but we had more than made up for it on Tuesday. The July Meeting has come a long way in the last three years and we could not have been happier with the way this week has gone. The racing has been fantastic.”

The crowd for today was 9,940.

Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Total
2004 12,815 8,519 9,940 31,274
2003 10,075 8,823 11,813 30,711

GET READY FOR MORE CLASSIC ‘NEWMARKET NIGHTS’

The July Course’s famed Newmarket Nights series re-commences next Friday (July 16) where the appeal of an evening’s racing followed by a pop concert will once more draw a huge crowd.

These events are renowned nationwide for attracting not only some top-class racehorses, but also the biggest pop acts.

Already this year, Newmarket has rocked to the sound of Blondie and the Sugarbabes, now get ready for as diverse acts as Jools Holland and Blue.

Newmarket’s marketing manager Gaynor Haxby said: “The Newmarket Nights are a unique entertainment experience. People can come along, have something to eat and drink, enjoy a flutter and then finish off their evening by watching a top band. They are a wonderful social occasion.”

Tickets, as always, are selling fast. Already there are no tickets lefts in the Members’ Enclosure for either Blue (July 30) or Jools Holland (August 6) while the Family Enclosure is also sold out for Blue.

Haxby added: “There are about 1,000 tickets left in the Grandstand and Paddock for Blue and they are likely to sell fast. They will probably be gone within a week or so while Jools Holland is not far behind. In the next two to three weeks, he will be sold out as well.”

Haxby confirmed that there are still plenty of tickets avilable for the other three meetings, starting with next Friday’s double-header of the Fame Academy Four, comprising of Alistair, Carolynne, Paris and Peter, and Stayin Alive, a tribute to the Bee Gees.

The following Friday - July 23 - will see an Abba tribute night as the Mamma Mia Concert (30th Anniversary Tour) rolls into town. After the world-renowned acts of Blue and Jools Holland, the Newmarket Nights season concludes on August 13 with Darius and Girls Aloud. The booking hotline number is: 08707 200 201 and more information is available from www.newmarketnights.co.uk

Race One - Venture Lifestyle Photography Handicap
Win and Place quotes

KEHAAR WINS FROM STALL ONE

The fact that Kehaar won the opening Venture Lifestyle Photography Handicap from stall one and that the first four home came up the far side certainly suggested that racegoers may be looking towards the low numbers for both the Darley July Cup and Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup.

Kehaar, who short-headed the front-running Mister Monet in a thrilling bobbing finish, is trained by Michael Magnusson, who pulled him out of Sandown last week-end because of unsuitable ground.

Magnusson said: “The ground is awful on the far rail, but Kehaar still won. He is a superstar.

“I would rather have run him over seven furlongs as he is still immature and does not really have the strength for a stiff mile, but Goodwood is an easier track and he’ll go for a Listed race at their big meeting at the end of the month.

“I really rate Kehaar, but he will be a better horse next year.”

Mark Johnston, trainer of the runner-up Mister Monet, said: “I was very happy with his run after so long (370 days) - he did well. He has had an injury so we have got to hope that he is OK after this, and, if so, he’ll be back out quite quickly.”

RACE 1 - THE VENTURE LIFESTYLE PHOTOGRAPHY HANDICAP
GROUND QUOTES

Mixed response on ground

Jockeys returned from the first race with differing reports on the ground.

Darryll Holland, rider of Taruskin, said: “It’s good ground - perfect. There’s no soft in that.”

Kieren Fallon, jockey of Credit, reported the surface was, “Slow”.

Jimmy Fortune, whose mount was Rehearsal, called it, “Good ground,” while Tom Queally concurred with that view.

Eddie Ahern, the rider of the winner Kehaar, said: “It was on the slow side of good.”

RACE 2 - THE WEATHERBY SUPERLATIVE STAKES
WIN QUOTES

“He could be a Derby horse”
Saeed bin Suroor on Dubawi

Dubawi was hailed as a possible Derby horse by Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor after taking the Group 3 Weatherbys Superlative Stakes by half a length..

He said: “There a plenty of options open for him. He can go for a Group Two or a Group One in the future. There are no plans at this moment - we will talk soon.

“But we are happy with the horse, he’s been working well. He has always showed speed and class and I think we have a nice horse for the future.

“A mile and a quarter or a mile and a half will be no problem with him next year. He could be a Derby horse. He and Belenus (a maiden winner on Tuesday at Newmarket) have real class - they can go to the Derby in the future.

“Frankie was really happy with him. Frankie has ridden many two-year-olds so far - but he is really pleased with this one. So far, Frankie says he and Belenus are the best.”

Dettori was clearly delighted after the Dubai Millennium colt, now 33-1 for both the 2005 2000 Guineas and Derby with Coral, had returned the 15-8 favourite on his second racecourse start.

He said: “This horse loves a scrap - he loves to be competitive, he loves to be among horses. And he never knows when he’s beaten - and I never know how much he’s got left.

“I like this horse because he’s one of those horses that it doesn’t matter who you throw him in with, he’s going to give them a race. He’s not going to be flash, winning by eight lengths but pound for pound he’ll give anybody a race. So far what he’s shown is, he’s determined, strong and a fighter.”

HENRIK “MUGGED” CLOSE HOME

There was more than a touch of irony about the fact that Henrik, owned by Celtic fanatic John Breslin, was cut down in the shadow of the post by Dubawi, who was carrying the Godolphin blue silks which are almost identical as those of arch-rivals Rangers.

Worn down close home and beaten half a length, Henrik, who had won on his debut at Goodwood, is trained by Mick Channon, who said: ”We had the race won but got ‘mugged’. He has run a cracker and, while I have no excuses, he is still only a shell of a horse and there is a lot of improvement to come.”

Ted Durcan, who rode Henrik, said: ”He has so much speed that he could easily switch back to six furlongs. He was relaxed in front and has run a super race.”

Jeremy Noseda was similarly pleased with third-placed Wilko, for whom the rain came at the wrong time.

Noseda said: ”It was a borderline decision as to whether we ran Wilko as he is much better on faster ground. In fact, ideally he wants it rock hard.”

Race Three - Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup

MATERIAL WITNESS SAVES BOOKIES

The favourite had won the previous two runnings of the Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup, so perhaps the sponsors were due to a “result” - and they certainly got one when 25-1 shot Material Witness bravely held off Court Masterpiece (10-1) by a short-head in the seven-furlong cavalry charge, prompting Ladbrokes Press Officer Mike Dillon to declare “God looks after his own.”

There weren’t many smiling punters and a somewhat muted reception greeted Martin Dwyer when he returned to the winner’s enclosure, but trainer William Muir had told everyone willing to listen that he thought the seven-year-old would win.

He said: ”I really fancied Material Witness and my only concern was the straight course as he likes to bowl along in front and I knew they would be queing up behind him.

“But this horse is so game. I thought he was a Group prospect when he was a two-year-old, but he has had so many problems; aches and pains, swelling in his joints and pulling out stiff every morning.

“But as you get older the pains fade away, and he is a much happier horse this year. He will be out in the paddock this evening with his old mate Alpen Wolf, who is now retired, and no doubt we will have our usual tough job in getting him to come in.

“Material Witness could run at Goodwood - a course he loves - but, though he is entered in the Vodafone Stewards’ Cup (20-1 with Paddy Power), I have Texas Gold for that race and he’ll take a hell of a lot of beating. He only came in his coat last week and is spot on for the race, so we could look for something else at that meeting for this fellow.”

Owner Mike Caddy, who flew in from Hong Kong to watch Material Witness win, agreed with Muir that Martin Dwyer had given the winner a terrific ride, but the jockey deflected the praise towards the horse.

Dwyer said: “He is so game and he really battled for me. He loves to be out in front, but I must confess it felt a long way up the hill - especially with Fallon closing down on me!”

RACE 3 - THE LADBROKES BUNBURY CUP
PLACE QUOTES

TOTE INTERNATIONAL LIKELY FOR
‘UNLUCKY’ MASTERPIECE

Trainer Ed Dunlop took a philsophical view after his charge Court Masterpiece was pipped a short head for glory in the Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup.

He said: “I’d say we were unlucky. But we know what the Bunbury Cup is like - I’ve been lucky and unlucky in it before.

“Kieren Fallon felt that with a clear run he would have won. But he’s run a great race and we might well run in him the Tote International.”

Paddy Power now quote him a 14-1 chance for the Ascot race on July 24.

Peter Makin, trainer of third-placed Greenslades, said: “No excuses, we just met two that were too good on the day. They were both drawn low - whether that made any difference I don’t know.

“But I would be pleased with him. He takes his races well, although he doesn’t want it too firm.

“He’s quite a hard horse to place, too, because he’s high in the ratings, so there’s only a limited number he can go for, really. He deserves to win a good one, one day, anyway.”

RACE 4 - THE DARLEY JULY CUP
WIN QUOTES

FANSHAWE JOY AFTER FRIZZANTE STRIKES

James Fanshawe is celebrating his second Group One victory inside 48 hours after the Johnny Murtagh-ridden Frizzante landed the Darley July Cup by a neck from Ashdown Express, following on from success with Soviet Song in the UAE Racing & Equestrian Federation Falmouth Stakes on Tuesday.

“I don’t think I’ll ever repeat that again,” commented Fanshawe after the Efisio mare had got up to beat outsider Ashdown Express by a neck. “ I better make the most of it as it’s been a fantastic couple of days.

“Frizzante is one I’ve been allowed to take my time with - she didn’t run as a two-year-old as she had very immature knees. She won first time out as a three-year-old.

“This time last year I think she was about 80 in the handicap ratings - and she’s just improved and improved. She never leaves an oat, she’s as tough as nails - a real, tough sort.”

Fanshawe admitted to being concerned about Frizzante’s 18 draw after the race but was uplifted by the Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup.

“I saw that one or two did quite well up the middle as there was in the second race. So Johnny said he was going to go up the middle - obviously it as the right thing to do. I think they went very, very quick early on and they were dying in front. She loves to pass horses - that’s her style.”

As for what’s next on the agenda, Fanshawe has some thinking to although the Stanley Leisure Sprint Cup at Haydock is a possible. Ideally, she’d like six, so it could be the Haydock race.”

On the flying form of his team, Fanshawe said: “The horses have been right this year. All these hor
ses have come back, always eaten up - there hasn’t been any food left.

“There’s been horses that I’ve felt would be really inconvenienced by the fast ground at Ascot, but they’ve come back and moved well. I thought Fizzante would be jarred up after Ascot, but she’s come back and moved well. So, I think when you have a lucky spell - when they’re running really well - things click into place. Let’s hope it lasts forever. Today has been fantastic - and Tuesday, as well. With fillies you grow more attached to them - especially if they’re five-year-olds. You get a special affinity with them.”

Race Four - Darley July Cup
Place Quotes

BALMONT GETS OFF TO FLOOR TO RUN BLINDER

Balmont, one of last season’s top two-year-olds, literally got up off the floor to run a blinding third behind Frizzante in the Group One Darley July Cup.

Eased out to 20-1 as rumours of the pre-race scare filtered through to the betting exchanges, Balmont, who was having his first run of the year, was beaten only a neck and two lengths, and his performance delighted trainer Jeremy Noseda.

He said: “That was a huge run considering he has been off nine months and seeing that he was lame at 5.15 this morning. We found him cast in his box and it was touch and go until 11 o’clock whether he ran.

“We had the ice buckets out and he was treated by both a chiropracter and the chiropodist, and he’ll improve a lot on that.

“He has such blinding speed that, while the Haydock Sprint Cup is the ideal race, I see no reason why five furlongs will be a problem, so he’ll go to York next month for the Nunthorpe Stakes.”

Chris Wall could barely believe how well his 100-1 chance Ashdown Express ran, the five-year-old producing a career-best performance to be beaten only a neck into second, getting caught close home.

Wall said: ”I know I’m probably biased, but the starting price was a bit of an insult. He has beaten many of the horses who were at shorter odds and, on his form behind Frizzante in the Abernant Stakes on the Rowley Mile in the spring, he had to be thereabouts.

“He is a horse who has to have everything go right for him but, when the cards fall his way, he is a decent sprinter.

“I was thinking about the Hackwood Stakes at Newbury next Saturday, and, while that might be a bit greedy, I think he has justified his entry for the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauvillenext month, and that is definitely on the agenda.”

BEATEN HORSES IN THE DARLEY JULY CUP

Kerrin McEvoy, rider of the 4/1 favourite Exceed And Excel who finished 19th of the 20 runners, said: “He was really disappointing, well below his best. We got to the position I wanted but he never travelled well and was beaten three furlongs out.”

Frankie Dettori, partner of the 14th Kheleyf, said: “Six furlongs was too sharp for him. I couldn’t lay up early on - I went past a few dead wood at the end but he needs further.”

David Oughton, trainer of the fourth home Cape Of Good Hope, declared: “He ran a super race. It was not ideal coming over from the worst draw (20) - there are no excuses. I will take him back to Hong Kong and give him a break, aiming him at the International Meeting in December.”

Fergal Lynch, who had the mount on the sixth Monsieur Bond, said: “He was only beaten two lengths and battled on.”

Race Five - Michael Powles Bentley Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (Div 1)
Win and place quotes

EX-CORAL DIRECTOR IN THE MONEY

Bob Scott, former chief executive of Coral Eurobet, was all smiles after his 350,000 guineas newcomer Winds of Time had made a winning debut in the Michael Powles Bentley Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (Div 1).

Scott, whose Torinmoor finished third here yesterday, beamed: “It’s been a good work - and certainly better than working for Coral.”

Winds of Time was bought for Amanda Perrett by James Delahooke, reviving memories of Dancing Brave and Warning, both of whom were bought for Amanda’s father Guy by the successful bloodstock agent.

Perrett said: “This is our first two-year-old winner of the season, and I am delighted for Bob and his wife Pauline.

“Winds of Time will improve for the experience and might be even better over seven furlongs, but this was the perfect start and is great education. My sister Lucy rides her regularly at home, and she has done a super job.”

Barry Hills, trainer of the runner-up Unreal, said: “She ran very well, she just got a bit tired in the last 100 yards.”

Michael Tabor, owner of the third-placed Catch A Star, said: “She had a chance to win - and ran a decent race. But at the end of the day, she wasn’t quite up to it. Maybe she’ll step up to 7f or even a mile.”

DOBBS SUSPENDED

Pat Dobbs was suspended for two days - July 19 & 20 - for careless riding on Destinate in the Weatherbys Superlative Stakes. The stewards found that his mount had interefered with John Forbes and Al Qudra.

Martin Dwyer Suspended

Martin Dwyer, rider of Material Witness in the Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup, has been suspended for two days for improper use of the whip. His suspension is on July 19 & 20.

HAT-TRICK FOR HANNON

Vondova landed trainer Richard Hannon an across-the-card treble when she struck in the second division of the Michael Powles Bentley Maiden 2yr Old Fillies Stakes.

The Efisio filly showed plenty of heart as she held the late challenge of Almansoora to score by head.

“We tried her over seven furlongs at Kempton last time, but she didn’t get the trip,” said Hannon, who has also been on the mark at Folkestone with Spaced and Corky this afternoon. “Today, she was 20-1, but then who cares? I’m very happy.

“I will have a word with her owner Bill Gredley about what she does next. We’ll just see how the race pans out.”

Frankie Dettori, rider of the second-placed Almansoora, said: “She ran a nice race but she would be better at seven furlongs where she would find it easier to get into a rhythm.”

Trainer Saeed bin Suroor added: “That was a pleasing start and we will step her up in trip and try and win a maiden.”

ANOTHER JUVENILE FOR LODER

Having beaten yesterday’s TNT July Stakes winner Captain Hurricane at Yarmouth four weeks ago, Satchem looked something to bet on in the newmarketracecourses.co.uk Nursery, and David Loder’s youngster, who went off 7-2 favourite, duly delivered. It was Loder’s second two-year-old success of the week.

Greeting his three parts of a length winner, who was partnered by smart youngster Tom Queally, Loder said: “Satchem looked a good thing on the Yarmouth form, but you get nervous having to give weight away, thinking there might be something lurking towards the foot of the handicap.

“However, this is a fair little horse and we were toying between running here or aiming for the Group 3 Weatherbys Superlative Stakes earlier in the day. Now we will probably have to kiss goodbye to nurseries and take a big leap up in class.”

Loder, who mentioned the Champagne Stakes at Goodwood as a possible target, added: “It’s been a good week, but it is tough when you have so few older horses and have to rely on the two-year-olds. You can’t hurry the youngsters and just have to be patient.”

Mick Channon, trainer of runner-up Sea Hunter, said: “He’s run a solid race - no complaints. He is a nice two-year-old, but he is just badly handicapped - that is why I put Sam Hitchcott (claims 3lb) on him.”

RICHARD HUGHES SUSPENDED

Richard Hughes was found guilty of careless riding on the second Unreal in the first division of the Michael Powles Bentley Maiden Fillies’ Stakes, for causing interference to the third Catch A Star in the last half a furlong. He was suspended for two days, July 19 & 20.

RACE 8 - The Dullingham Handicap

It’s the ‘lucky last’ for Luca

Trainer Luca Cumani took the concluding race of the July meeting when Mephisto scored by half-a-length from Astrocharm.

The five-year-old gelding, who won under Cumani’s wife Sara at York last time out, looks to be still on the upgrade and may take in the Ebor in August.

Cumani said: “He did well, didn’t he? Darryll Holland rode him well - he was given his orders by the jockey that rode him last time!

“He’s in the Ebor. I don’t know if that will be next for him, we’ll see. It’s a month away, so a lot of things could happen.

“But he could be a candidate for that race, we’ll just have to see nearer the time.”

Mark Tompkins, who trained the runner-up Astrocharm, said: “She’s run her heart out and has just bumped into a better one - and a well-handicapped horse!”

GOOD TO SOFT GROUND

Newmarket was forecast 20 millimetres of rain from yesterday evening and got 20 millimetres (just under an inch).

This has changed the going from good to firm yesterday to officially

GOOD TO SOFT

this morning.

Michael Prosser, Newmarket’s clerk of the course, said: “The going is on the better side of good to soft and the going stick reading is 7.2 this morning.

“There are thundery showers forecast from early afternoon.”

BETTING NEWS

Corals stuck their neck out overnight when quoting Grizedale at 33-1 for the Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup - and have been accommodated accordingly.

Simon Clare, the Corals spokesman, said: ”We took a view and were much bigger than all the other firms about Grizedale but, perhaps inevitably, in view of the fact he is the Pricewise selection in the Racing Post, we were inundated with enquiries and he is down to 16-1.

“We have laid him to lose fortunes, and he would be one of our worst losers of the entire season.”

Grizedale has also been cut (16-1 from 20-1) with Victor Chandler, who have also trimmed Greenslades from 10-1 to 8-1, Golden Chalice from 12-1 to 10-1, Makfool from 16-1 to 14-1 and Heretic from 14-1 to 12-1 but, while Corals have also had money for Makfool (14-1 from 18-1), Paddy Power, though being forced to chop Greenslades to 8-1 from 11-1, report that most punters are holding fire on the race.

Tony Coleman, spokesman for the Irish firm, explained: “With the overnight rain, we are finding that most of our clients are waiting to find out the effect it has on the ground and also where the draw advantage now lies. They are dipping their toes in the water in the opener (the Venture Lifestyle Photography Handicap) with Credit (14-1 from 16-1), and, doubtless, the phones will start ringing after that race.”

However, both Victor Chandler and Coral customers have taken the plunge early and, following the advice of leading professional punter Henry Rix, who is enjoying a profitable run with his selections, have snapped up all the 25-1 about Nayyir for the Darley July Cup, and Gerard Butler’s stable-star, who has not run since finishing third in the Dubai Duty Free at Nad Al Sheba in March, is down to 16-1 with both Corals and Victor Chandler (from 22-1).

In the same race, Antonius Pius has been tightened up to 11-2 (from 6-1) with Corals, who have also shortened Monsieur Bond to 8-1 from 10-1, while Paddy Power report cash for the mud-loving Somnus, who has been cut a point to 8-1.
