WINNING QUOTES RACE ONE
BAHRAIN TROPHY
OUTSIDER OF FOUR SHOCKS THEM
Anousa, the 13-2 outsider of four, was far too good for his apparently superior rivals in the opening Listed Bahrain Trophy to leave his trainer Paul Howling with something of a problem.
“I don’t know what I shall do with him now, as that looks like the end of handicaps for him,” said the trainer as he mused about the fact that runner-up, odds-on Top Seed, had been third in the Dante and the Queen’s Vase.
“Maybe we shall have to look for a small black type race abroad for him.”
This was Howling’s first success at that level since Shamrock City won a Listed race here two or three seasons ago, and he reckoned that he was putting his neck on the line by running him over this trip of nearly a mile and seven furlongs.
“Some people said that he would stay and others that he wouldn’t and I took the decision on the grounds that he would. I came here expecting him to run well, though I did not expect him to win it like that.
“When he ran in the King George V at Royal Ascot he was last turning for home and looked like being tailed off, but his jockey gave him a couple of cracks and he absolutely flew to be beaten only about three and a half lengths.
“And this man (pointing to Kieren Fallon) has been a big help to me. He has ridden the horse out a lot and keeps telling me that he is good. I was very glad that he kept Anousa tucked in behind the front two and let them take the brunt of the wind.”
Anousa is one of three horses Howling trains for Sheikh Mohammed Al Sabah, of the ruling family of Kuwait, who runs his three hiorses (all with Howling) under the banner of Arkland International (UK) Ltd.
“The other two are not up to this level and they will probably be moved on quite soon. The Sheikh likes to have horses good enough to run at meetings like this, he is not keen on the idea of them running at places like Catterick and Folkestone,” said Howling, who is having an excellent season and was sending out his 22nd winner of the year from a yard of 30 horses.

GROUND FASTER
The weathermen might be talking of rain hitting Newmarket late this afternoon, but jockeys in the opener were unanimous that the ground was riding faster than it was on Tuesday.
Darryll Holland, who rode the whipper-in Isidore Bonheur, described the going as “very fast - much quicker than yesterday”, while Ted Durcan called it “fast” and Philip Robinson said that it had “dried up appreciably”.
Neither Durcan nor trainer Mick Channon had any excuses for the defeat of odds-on favourite Top Seed who was second, beaten three and a half lengths by Anousa (13-2), the outsider of the quartet.
Channon said: “It seems I can’t even convert a penalty kick. Top Speed is looking a professional loser and, while Ted might have been better advised kicking on, the horse never picked up and was beaten fair and square.”
Race Two - TNT July Stakes
Win quotes
CHAPPLE-HYAM BLOWING HOT
Captain Hurricane, continuing the remarkable resurgence of Peter Chapple-Hyam since he returned from Hong Kong, battled through a strong force wind to win the Group Two TNT July Stakes.
With Mystical Land short of room in the last 100 yards, it was left to Captain Hurricane and Council Member to fight out the finish, but the Chapple-Hyam colt, who had swept up the outside, had his head down in the right place and got the short-head verdict.
Captain Hurricane is part-owned by Andrew “Bertie” Black, who, together with Ed Wray, set up the hugely successful Betfair betting exchange operation, and both confessed to having enjoyed “a nice little touch”.
Black said: ”Peter had been disappointed when Captain Hurricane had been beaten in his first two races but, whereas I didn’t back him then because he was too short, I thought the price was too long today and helped myself to a bit of 28-1 and 24-1.”
Chapple-Hyam, having rocketed back to the top through the exploits of one-time claimer African Dream, had always thought that Captain Hurricane, bought by bloodstock agent Tom Goff for 21,000 guineas at Doncaster Sales and introduced by Cashmans into their market for next year’s 2,000 Guineas at 50-1, was his Royal Ascot horse.
He said: “I felt he was a certainty first time out at Yarmouth and could not believe it when he was beaten, and then at Salisbury he was a bit fresh and pulled too hard. He is entered in the Gimcrack and I am sure that the boys (Jeremy Wray is the third member of the Comic Strip Heroes) would love to make the speech at York !”
FIRST TWO WINNING JOCKEYS
Kieren Fallon, the winning jockey in the opening Bahrain Trophy, said: “The wind could turn you sideways so it was lucky I got some cover.
“Anousa is obviously progressing and the extra distance suited him. I was worried about the ground - I thought he needed cut but I have been proved wrong again!.
“It is quite fast ground but there is a good cover so it is safe.”
Jimmy Fortune, successful on Captain Hurricane in the second, the TNT July Stakes, said: “Things didn’t go quite his way at Salisbury last time. He was going to win easily and then there was nothing there.
“I am not surprised at all that he has won today - he gave me a lovely feel last time. We were getting blown about a bit in the wind - I was not aware of anything untoward.”
PLACED QUOTES RACE TWO
TNT JULY STAKES
RUNNER-UP’S EFFORT ‘ROCK SOLID’
“That was a rock solid effort,” said Godolphin’s racing manager Simon Crisford after their 7-4 favourite Council Member had been beaten a short head by the topically-named Captain Hurricane in the TNT July Stakes.
“It was a pity that he had to race into the teeth of the wind, but he has so much natural speed and there didn’t look like being any pace on, so really he had no option but to make it.
“He has run on really well and there is no reason why we should be disappointed with that,” added Crisford of the runner-up, who has now been second in two Group races, as this narrow defeat followed his second to Iceman in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot.
As well as having this colt carrying the Godolphin banner in the race, Sheikh Mohammed was also represented, in his own name, by third home Mystical Land, who was the runner-up’s market rival and finished a length and a quarter behind him.
WINNING QUOTES RACE THREE
JOSS COLLINS HERITAGE HANDICAP
“ASCOT WAS THE PLAN, BUT...”
“The plan was the King George V Handicap at Ascot, and we thought he had a big chance, but everything went wrong for him there,” said trainer Michael Bell after Woodcracker had taken the Joss Collins Handicap in a driving finish with The Queen’s contender Royal Warrant.
“He was well drawn at Ascot, but he got shuffled back early and could never really get into the race and, in addition to that, he really couldn’t act on the very fast ground. We thought he had a good chance after his good run at York,” Bell added.
“This was an obvious race for him after that and it may well be that his best distance is a mile and a quarter. Sir Thomas (Pilkington, former senior steward of the Jockey Club and owner-breeder of the winner) likes to have runners at the July meeting and this fitted in well.
“I don’t know what we will do with him now. He is in the Magnet (John Smith’s) Cup on Saturday, but that will come too soon for him, but there is the Spitfire Handicap at Goodwood and that could be a race we would look at for him.”
Harking back to bloodstock agent Joss Collins, who died earlier this year and in whose memory the race was staged, Bell said “He bought a fair number of horses for me over the years and he found a Group winner for me early on in Smart Guest who won the Angelsey Stakes in 1994, in the days before Aidan O’Brien when it was possible to win Group races in Ireland.”

ROYAL WARRANT PIPPED BY WOODCRACKER
The Queen has not enjoyed the best of seasons so far, and Her Majesty’s consistent but luckless colt Royal Warrant was pipped on the post by Woodcracker in the £50,000 Joss Collins Handicap.
Royal Warrant, runner-up for the third consecutive time, has finished in the frame in seven of his eight races this season, with just the one win on the Polytrack at Lingfield to his credit.
“I thought we had got him on the line,” groaned Martin Dwyer as the short-head verdict went against him, but Michael Oswald, The Queen’s former Royal Studs manager, was justfiably proud of Royal Warrant.
He said: “He is so gutsy and does not know how to run a bad race. He keeps getting placed and has earned Her Majesty plenty of prize money, but he deserves to win one of these.
“Next stop could be a race at Goodwood on July 29, but, unfortunately, I can’t be there as I am away with the RAF - perhaps I can get them to fly over the Sussex Downs!”
Race Four - Princess of Wales’s cantorodds, com Stakes
Win quotes
BANDARI COCKS A DEAF ‘UN TO CRITICS
Bandari, equipped with ear plugs in the preliminaries (they were taken out before he entered the stalls), silenced his critics when getting back on the winning road in the Group Two Princess of Wales’s cantorodds.com Stakes.
Sulamani, the 11-8 favourite, found the fast ground and 5lb penalty too much and was outpointed half a length by Bandari, leaving winning trainer Mark Johnston to reflect on “what a difference a day makes”.
Down in the dumps after dual Guineas heroine Attraction had lost her unbeaten record here on Tuesday, Johnston said: “That epitomises the ups and down of racing.
“Bandari can be a bit erratic and he ran no race at Royal Ascot last time, but he often gets excited and has run his race before he gets in the stalls and that is why we tried the earplugs.
“They were put in two hours before the race and then taken out at the start, and, unlike in so many of his previous races, he was very relaxed with not a drop of sweat on him.
“James Willoughby (Racing Post columnist) insists that the key to this horse was to bring him back to a mile and a quarter, yet here he is winning a Group Two over a mile and a half.
“I have never lost faith in Bandari, and it just goes to show that good horses can come back. He was a star two years ago when we thought he’d run a big race in the Derby, and I’m delighted that we have got him back.
“Now we will look at running him in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot on July 24.”
Cashmans offer a top-priced 20-1.
Richard Hills, who rode Bandari, said: ”When I took the ear plugs out at the start he was shocked and whipped around as if someone had slapped him up the arse. I fell off, so it’s a good job the handler had a firm hold.”
PLACED QUOTES RACE FOUR
PRINCESS OF WALES’S cantorodds.com STAKES
SULAMANI REMAINS KING GEORGE POSSIBLE
“He has run really well and I am very pleased with him, but I just wish that the ground had not been so fast,” said Saeed bin Suroor after Godolphin’s Sulamani had gone down by half a length to Bandari in the Princess of Wales’s cantorodds.com Stakes.
“He is definitely happier when the ground is softer than this, and it is still possible that he will run in the King George at Ascot if the ground is right for him. He, Doyen and Papineau are all very much possibles at the moment.”
bin Suroor’s comments were endorsed by the team’s racing manager Simon Crisford who added: “He has run really well on the ground and with his Group One penalty, and he could certainly still run in the King George. We had hoped that we would get away with it and he really had to have a run; after all this is July, the seventh month of the year, and he has had only one race before this.”
Sulamani is an 8/1 chance from 7/1 with Paddy Power.
Marcus Tregoning was much happier with the effort of third-placed High Accolade than he was after the colt had been trounced by Doyen at Ascot.
“That was a much better run and he has done well. I wish he could have got more cover with the wind blowing so hard down the straight, though I doubt it that would have made a great deal of difference to the result.
“We shall leave him in the King George just to see what the big boys are doing, but at this stage I would think he is an unlikely runner.
“We shall look at the Geoffrey Freer for him, though he would probably not run in that if Mubtaker does.”
And speaking of last year’s Arc runner-up Tregoning said: “It is taking a long time to get him ready and he is going to have to have an autumn campaign. The Geoffrey Freer would be the earliest race he could run in.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE FIVE
CAPANNELLE RACECOURSE EBF NOVICE STAKES
FINE DEBUT BY THE PRINCE
Stetchworth Prince, the first horse to race for the partnership of Edward St George (under his Lucayan Stud banner) and Bill Gredley, made a very pleasing start to his racing life with a clear-cut debut success in the Capannelle Racecourse Novice Stakes.
“That was really quite impressive and as I haven’t really done a great deal with him I would expect him to come on quite a bit for that,” said the colt’s trainer David Loder after Stetchworth Prince had seen off Army of Angels (a third runner-up of the day for Godolphin) by a length and three-quarters.
The winner, whose breeders the Hichclere Stud were also responsible for the TNT July Stakes scorer Captain Hurricane, might be a horse for Goodwood at the end of the month, but Loder has made no plans in that precise direction.
“The older horses have been disappointing, but then you can only play with the cards you are dealt - if you haven’t got four aces there is nothing you can do about it,” Loder went on.
“But the two-year-olds are beginning to come together and I hope that they can carry on in the way this fellow has.
“I have quite a few to run in the next few days, particularly of Edward’s while he is over here, and this horse really ran only because I knew that both Edward and Bill would be at the meeting.”

DETTORI BIG ARMY FAN
Godolphin have a cluster of unraced two-year-olds to run in the coming weeks, and Army Of Angels, the latest newcomer of the boys in blue to hit the streets, lost nothing in defeat when beaten a length and three-quarters by Stetchworth Prince in the Capannelle Racecourse Novice Stakes.
Frankie Dettori, who rode Army of Angels, was suitably impressed. He said: “He will come on a lot for that. I was in a pocket but he was staying on at the end and he gave me a good feel.
“I like him a lot - he is not shy and is a bit of a cheekie chappy, who wants a scrap.”
Similarly, Barry Hills, who trained third-placed Paper Talk, the 11-8 favourite, was not disappointed.
He said: “Mine all improve for the run, and he’ll be sharper next time. The winner got first run, but Darryll (Holland) did the right thing and he’s a nice horse.”
Winning and Placed quotesRace Six - Rolls Royce Handicap
VALANCE LANDS A GAMBLE
Backed early this morning at 11-1, Valance landed a bit of a gamble for Charles Egerton when winning the Rolls Royce Handicap at 9-2.
Egerton was “away on business”, but part-owner Austin Allison was showered in congratulations in the winner’s enclosure.
He said: ”we were disappointed with Valance at Salisbury, but the extra two furlongs today suited him.
“We ran him twice over hurdles last winter - he won at Huntingdon and would have finished second at Newbury had he not tipped up - but Charles thinks we should now concentrate on the Flat, and the money is certainly better.
“He is entered in the Ebor and I suppose the penalty might help him towards getting in the race, but Johnny Murtagh, who gave him such a great ride here, reckons we should look elsewhere.”
Amanda Perrett, trainer of third-placed Ten Carat, was delighted with the colt’s first run of the season.
She said: ”That was a very good effort and if he had a clearer run in the closing stages it would have been even better.
“He would have run in the Ascot Stakes, but, like so many of my horses, he was slow to come to hand this year, so now he will go for the Goodwood Stakes and then the Cesarewitch. We will have some fun with him.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE SEVEN
NGK SPARK PLUGS HANDICAP
ANOTHER SURPRISE WITH PRELUDE
On a day of several shocks, we ended with the biggest of the afternoon when 25-1 Silver Prelude took the NGK Spark Plugs Handicap, winning by a neck and the same from Awake and Currency.
“That was a really good effort for a three-year-old taking on older horses,” enthused winning trainer Dean Ivory. “There was a time last year when we weren’t sure if he actually got the five furlongs, but he certainly did so there and was brilliantly ridden by Philip (Robinson).
“His owner Andrew Shone had two runners in the race but once we saw the field split into two we knew that Miss George would not have any chance with her draw of 15. She just would not get enough cover and she didn’t.” Miss George finished 12th.
Milton Bradley, delighted with the return to form of third-placed Currency, said “he got stuck in a pocket on the rails and had to switch, but he finished bdest of all and with luck he’ll be winning again soon.
Macolm Saunders, trainer of second favourite Devise who was fourth, said “he is better when he gets some cover but though there was a big field he was always seeing a bit too much daylight, and when Kerrin (McEvoy) did get him running the horse could not quicken up in time.”
SOVIET SONG IN FINE FETTLE
The Press Association reported this morning that Soviet Song is in good form after her famous victory over Attraction in the UAE Equestrian & Racing Federation Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket yesterday.
The four- year- old brought the unbeaten run of the dual classic heroine Attraction to an end in the Group One feature and is none the worse for her exertions.
“She ate up last night and has been out for a walk and a pick of grass this morning. She's fine,” trainer James Fanshawe told At The Races.
Soviet Song, owned by the Elite Racing Club, is entered in the Cantor Odds Sussex Stakes at Goodwood on July 28, but the Newmarket handler wants to bide his time before committing to a definite target.
“It's hard to say straight after a race (where she will run next). She was left in the race on Tuesday, but I would not run her if the ground was fast there,” he added.
“She's had five quick races close together, but she's as tough as nails.”
Fanshawe admitted he had been confident that his daughter of Marju would run a good race.
“I thought if Soviet Song put up as good a performance as she had done at Ascot behind Refuse To Bend that she would be thereabouts,” he explained.
“Also, we thought Attraction's front-running style would really suit Soviet Song. They didn't look to be going that quick early on but they weren't too far outside the track record.”
TODAY’S ATTENDANCE
The crowd for the second day of the July meeting was 8,519, which is down by just 304 (3.4%) on last year’s attendance of 8,823.
GOING NEWS AT 10AM
The going for the second day of the July Meeting remains
GOOD TO FIRM,
to which it was officially changed after the first race yesterday.
“It was dry overnight after we had had almost an inch of rain in the week leading up to the meeting, but more rain is forecast for later today.
“It should be dry for most of the day, but there may be a few spots during the last race and it is forecast to rain heavily starting between 5pm and 7pm.
“We may have as much as 20 millimetres (3/4 of an inch) of rain overnight.”
BETTING NEWS
Milton Bradley is very much the sprint king, and Corals report “a good old-fashioned gamble” on the stable’s veteran Salviati in today’s finale, the NGK Spark Plugs Rated Handicap (4.40pm).
Simon Clare, press officer to Corals, said: “We offered 20-1, but the phones have been ringing all morning, and he has proved a real each-way steamer. His form figures may be uninspiring, but money talks and we have been forced to slash his odds to 14-1.”
Corals have also seen plenty of cash for Magistretti in the feature race, the Princess of Wales’s cantorodds.com Stakes (2.55pm) and, with Sulamani proving “a weak favourite”, the Neville Callaghan-trained horse has been cut to 9-2 from 11-2, while Paddy Power have also taken evasive action over the same horse, with spokesman Tony Coleman reporting: ”The ‘dead eight’ has attracted each-way punters, and he is now 5-1 from 11-2.”
Nick Littmoden’s Royal Ascot winner Chateau Istana has been the buzz horse for the other Group race, the TNT July Stakes (1.50pm), with Victor Chandler reducing offers from 7-1 to 6-l - “if he was in a more fashionable yard he would be even shorter,” declared public relations officer Neal Wlkins - while Paddy Power shaved him half a point to 13-2.
Motive has been all the rage with Paddy Power for the Joss Collins Heritage Handicap (2.20pm), though the three non-runners were partly responsible for reducing the favourite’s odds from 7-2 to 5-2, while Celtic Heroine has been backed with the Irish firm from 5-1 to 7-2
in the same race, Victor Chandler have chopped Michael Jarvis’s Royal Ascot winner from 5-1 to 3-1 and Corals from 9-2 to 100-30. Torinmoor, the Pricewise selection in the Racing Post, has also been well supported and is down to 10-1 (from 16-1) with Corals in what is looking a warm betting heat.

RECORDS BROKEN ON OPENING DAY OF TATTERSALLS JULY SALE
The record price for a mare was broken on the opening day of the Tattersalls July Sale when ECHOES was sold for 130,000 guineas on a day where turnover rose a staggering 106% to 2,477,300 guineas, smashing the previous record for the opening day of the Europe's leading midsummer sale.
In total 154 lots were sold for a record session average of 16,086 guineas and a record median of 8,750 guineas. The figures represented rises of 43% and 46% on last year's corresponding day results.
The three year old RAINBOW QUEST mare ECHOES was consigned by CheveleyPark Stud and as a daughter of the Group 1 Coronation Stakes winner EXCLUSIVE was always going to be in high demand. Offered in foal to Cheveley Park's first season stallion WHERE OR WHEN, ECHOES is also a half sister to the Listed winner CHIC and also counts 2000 Guineas winner ENTREPRENEUR and Oaks second DANCE A DREAM amongst her close relatives.
The battle for supremacy soon settled down to a struggle between the Newmarket based agent John Troy and Yorkshire based bloodstock agent James Delahooke with Troy proving successful with his bid of 130,000 guineas. It was the third year running that the historic nursery Cheveley
Park Stud has sold the top priced mare at the July Sale and their consignment of fillies and mares realised 357,500 guineas for the twelve lots sold.
The legendary ISTABRAQ was purchased at the 1996 Tattersalls July Sale for 38,000 guineas and jumping trainers and owners have regularly purchased at the July Sale in search of top class National Hunt prospects. Recent winner KARELIAN, offered from Andre Fabre's stables in France looked a standout in this respect and the son of LINAMIX and half brother to Group and Listed winners KALAJANA and KALABO attracted bidders from all corners of the ring. Ballyhane Stud principal Joe Foley was prominent early as was local agent Gill Richardson, before agent Timmy Hyde and former trainer Jeff Pearce advanced bidding towards six figures.
It was at this point that Richardson re-entered proceeding's, making the winning bid of 105,000 guineas on behalf of the North Yorkshire-based trainer Kevin Ryan.
The draft from Sheikh Mohammed's Darley operation looked attractive on paper and it proved similarly so in the sale ring as the 22 lots sold realised a total of 533,500 guineas. Two fillies shared top billing with the first being LITTLE DORRIT, a three year old filly by SADLER'S WELLS out of Group winning DARSHAAN mare ZAFADOLA. Bidding was swift with Australian Jeff Watt, manager for Kia-Ora Stud in Australia and Irish agent John O'Byrne going head to head before O'Byrne emerged triumphant with a bid of 77,000 guineas. LITTLE DORRIT is a half sister to the Listed NIGHT SHIFT winner ZELANDA, herself the dam of the Listed winner and Group placed PEARL GREY.
The second Darley filly to reach 77,000 guineas was the three year old DEPUTY MINISTER filly ROSEMARK, a daughter of the Group 1 Prix St-Alary winner ROSEFINCH, herself a daughter of the Champion three year old filly OH SO SHARP. The half sister to Listed winner ROSCIUS was purchaed by the BBA Ireland's Adrian Nicoll.
The Darley draft also included several well performed colts and the pick of these looked to be the Group 3 winner and Group 1 National Stakes third DUBLIN. The son of CARSON CITY was purchased by Newmarket based bloodstock agent Grant Pritchard-Gordon for 55,000 guineas on behalf of Oussama Aboughazal, the leading breeder in Chile. Aboughazal, who has thoroughbred interests in the US and England including the multiple Group 1 winning filly WILD SPIRIT, purchased DUBLIN to stand at his Sumaya Stud property.
