Goodwood’s Managing Director Rod Fabricius described himself as “very happy” with the way in which the Glorious Goodwood meeting has gone.
“The weather has been exceptional and the racing, almost throughout, has been of the highest quality.” he said. “There have been no incidents or any trouble and the crowd seem to have enjoyed themselves in the sunshine.
“Now we shall sit back and review the meeting and see what we can do to in the way of improvements to the race programme, crowd entertainment, facilities and amenities and start planning ahead for the Festival in 2005.”
JIMMY FORTUNE CLINCHES
GOODWOOD JOCKEY AWARD
Jimmy Fortune received his Racing UK Trophy from the legendary Lester Piggott for being the leading jockey at Glorious Goodwood this year with four winners and, reflecting how his career was at the cross-roads during the winter because of a serious back injury, he confessed “at one time I thought I might never ride again”.
Fortune, whose four winners included a treble on Friday, might have been a no-hoper with the bookies when they opened betting on the Goodwood jockeys’ title, but he insists that he always felt that he had a real chance of surprising the likes of Fallon, Dettori and Holland this week.
He said: “I did not have a great book of rides for the first three days, but I really fancied what I had lined up for Friday and Saturday and, I must admit, that I would have been gutted if I had come away with less than three winners.
“You need a lot of luck at this course and things dropped right for me this week, but I have had a lot of support from some of the big trainers, and my four winners all came for different stables.”
Turning the clock back to when he was struggling to regain full fitness, Fortune added: “The surgeon was marvellous, but it was very frustrating at times and I knew I had to be patient.
“It was not too painful - I’ve had a bad back for 10 years and you learn to live with it, and when you get days like today and yesterday it makes it all worthwhile.”
Fallon rattled off wins on Friday on Alkaased (Luca Cumani), Montgomery’s Arch (Peter Chapple-Hyam) and Jonquil (John Gosden), and, having topped up the celebrations today on Fong’s Thong, he almost made it five when Silence Is Golden failed by only a short-head to catch Favourable Terms in the Group One Vodafone Nassau Stakes.

VODAFONE STEWARDS’ CUP
THE GLOOM IS OVER FOR MAKIN
“At last I can say that is the end of two grim years,” beamed a delighted Peter Makin after Seb Sanders had ridden 7-1 co favourite Pivotal Point to a clear-cut success in the £100,000 Vodafone Stewards’ Cup.
“For the last two years the horses have been suffering from a virus which no-one has really been able to identify,” Makin went on. “ But this year they have finally been right and I can go to the races with my head held up high and knowing that my horses would run well.
“We had a massive clear-out at the end of last year, getting rid of a lot of horses who were really very much dead wood and who may have been carrying the virus as well. So as a result of that we are now down from 50 horses to 30 and we are a bit rattling about at Ogbourne, but maybe this will be the start of something good again.”
Pivotal Point spent his early days with Linda Perratt at Ayr, but was sent to Makin as a backend two-year-old in the hope that his mind could be sorted out.
“He just hated being in the stalls and used to try to knock them over to fight his way out of them,” the trainer related. “I think that when he came to us he had been to the races three times but never actually run, and he was sent to us because we are very close to our local horse whisperer Gary Witherford.
.”He got the horse sorted out mentally - until this year he went to the start with him for every race - but he did not use a rug or anything else like that on him. He just gradually got him to calm down and stop taking on the stalls.
“When Pivotal Point came to me, I could see he was a great big bruiser so I had him gelded immediately. We weren’t going to try him in the stalls in the mental state he was in! As far as this race is concerned, I was at one time not sure about coming here because I wondered about six furlongs and about the downhill run on fast ground.
“ But then when he ran so well under an 8lb penalty at Ascot last weekend and we had only a 3lb penalty here, I decided that it was worth taking the chance. I have always regarded the Stewards’ Cup as a bit of a lottery but I think that it is a lovely race now.
“I have always thought that he is capable of being a black type horse and, depending on what the handicapper does with him, we may try black type quite soon, but I can’t really make a decision about that until we see the handicapper’s reaction to this.
“The race I would love to win with him is the Abbaye, in which we were second a couple of seasons back with Imperial Beauty.
“I think that Seb (Sanders, who rode the winner) has a real chance of being champion jockey this year. He isn’t very far behind Kieren Fallon and is riding in brilliant form, so much so that he could almost win if he started from Chichester Harbour.
“He has been associated with us for 10 years - at one time we more or less had second claim on him, but he is rather in demand now. But he comes down and rides work regularly and always gives you 110%; he is a fine jockey and a really good man.”

QUINN RUES HIS BAD LUCK
Malton trainer John Quinn felt runner-up Fantasy Believer, who was beaten a length and a quarter, might have been a bit unlucky not to scoop the big prize.
Quinn said: “He frightened himself when he banged his head in the stalls at Ascot the time before last, and, consequently, he missed the kick when the stalls opened and was slowly away.
“At the top of the hill, he was three parts of the way down the field, and he passed 10 horses in the last furlong, but I am taking nothing away from the winner. This is a race in which you need a lot of luck, and the cards just did not fall our way.
“He would have liked softer ground, so we will now aim him at the Ayr Gold Cup in September.”
Darryll Holland, who rode Fantasy Believer, said: “He won his race on the far side, but he is always better when he has one to aim at, and the draw worked against us. He would also have preferred easier ground.”
Terry Mills, whose High Reach finished third, was unhappy that the course executive had decided to water the course overnight.
Mills said: “Why put another seven millimetres of water on. The winner was drawn one and has won, whereas we start from stall 28 and finish second, having switched to the middle of the course.
“We had first choice at the draw and followed the stats, which told us you had to be drawn high. It is just not right that they have moved the goalposts.”

BOOKIES HARD HIT BY
PIVOTAL POINT
Bookmakers reported that they were hard hit by the victory of the 7/1 co favourite Pivotal Point in the big betting race of the day, the £100,000 Vodafone Stewards’ Cup.
Ladbrokes’ Balthazar Fabricius said: “In one word it was disastrous, not quite as bad as Patavellian last year, but 12/1 to 7/1 on a high turnover race like the Vodafone Stewards’ Cup tells its own story.”
Neal Wilkins of Victor Chandler commented: “Pivotal Point’s win was a monster blow for the bookies both on and off course.
“As big as 14/1 in one list this morning, he was backed off the boards down to 7/1. The placed horses were all in demand and it was a rotten result in common with much that has gone on earlier in the week.”

When the stalls are positioned "low", stall one is placed adjacent to the stands rail. When they are placed "high", the highest-numbered stall is placed directly next to the rail on the other side of the course. Because of the large number of runners in the Vodafone Stewards’ Cup, the horses are spread across virtually the whole course.
HIGH NUMBERS THE CALL IN VODAFONE STEWARDS’ CUP DRAW ON THURSDAY - HOW THE TRAINERS SAW IT THEN
Raceday Clerk of the Course Seamus Buckley insists that there is only a length between the two sides with regards to any draw bias in Saturday’s £100,00 Vodafone Stewards’ Cup, but trainers are not convinced and were unanimous in plumping for the high numbers when the draw was made at noon today (Thursday).
Terry Mills’s High Reach was the first horse drawn out of the hat and connections opted for stall 28, and the trend continued from thereon, with Proud Boast, who was next out, in 27, CD Europe 30, Halmahera in 29, Royal Storm 26, Fantasy Believer 24, Texas Gold 25, Native Title 23, Corridor Creeper 22, Funfair Wane 21 and Stormont 20.
The fact that the first three home last year came out of stalls 27, 29 and 28 respectively seemed to influence trainers but, as the choice edged towards the middle, Peter Makin bucked the trend when choosing the stands’ rail draw for Pivotal Point, who will attempt to emulate Jukebox (1970) and Soba (1982) by defying stall one.
However, Pivotal Point is a confirmed trailblazer, and there is no shortage of pace in the low numbers, with Raccoon (2), Material Witness (4), Smokin Beau (5), Two Step Kid (6) and Caribbean Coral (8).
Michael Magnusson only had 20th choice for former ante-post favourite Mutawaqed, so chose stall 14.
He said: ”If I had the choice I would have had 28, but, in the event, there was little left for us.
“Mutawaqed is not the quickest starter so it was never imperative to be over that side, and he did come from a long way back when he won at York, so perhaps all is not lost.”
Jeremy Noseda, who trains Two Step Kid (6), said: “I wanted to be high, but there were only seven balls left when our name came out, so we were a bit snookered.
“However, I am encouraged by the fact that there is plenty of pace on the stands’ side, and they tell me that Danetime, who was the last three-year-old to win the race, was drawn five, so we might yet get lucky.”
HOW THE JOCKEYS AND TRAINERS SAW IT AFTER FRIDAY’S CONCLUDING RACE
Ahead of tomorrow’s Vodafone Stewards’ Cup, the following jockeys made these comments after the Stewards’ Sprint Handicap (on Friday):
Liam Treadwell, who emerged from stall 17 on Loyal Tycoon, said: “The stands’ side was always in front and always travelling better.”
Ryan Moore, who emerged from stall 24 on Parkside Pursuit, said: “Every sprint has been won up the stands’ side this week and we were well behind our end.”
Ted Durcan, who emerged from stall 26 on Albashoosh, said: “We were always behind on our side but there was no pace - it’s not the draw but whether you have any pace on your side.”
Frankie McDonald, who emerged from stall 18 on Devon Flame, said: “I was on the far side but you are better off with a low draw - I went to the far rail and they were always going better on the other side, four or five lengths clear.”
Royston Ffrench, who emerged from stall 6 on Time To Remember, said: “That race was won by the horse next to me and he had the rail which was a big advantage - there was plenty of speed on our side and it was the right side for that race.”
Merlin’s Dancer gave Dandy Nicholls yet another celebration success in the Stewards’ Sprint Handicap, the consolation race for tomorrow’s Vodafone-sponsored Stewards’ Cup.
And with only one of the first six home coming from the far side group - fourth-placed Albashoosh, also trained by Nicholls and beaten three lengths - the winning trainer, whose three runners tomorrow are all drawn high, is convinced that he is on the wrong side.
Nicholls said: ”We all jumped in too quick and chose to go high at the draw, and I soon realised that there was no pace over there. They have done a bit of work on the drainage and I feel sure that the Stewards’ Cup winner will come from the low numbers.”
Merlin’s Dancer, one of 11 horses that Nicholls saddled in this race, was having his third run in six days, having run at Ascot on Sunday and again down here on Wednesday.
Nicholls added: “Eamon Maher (owner) and I went and had a look after racing on Wednesday and there was not a scratch on him. He was bucking and kicking, so we decided to have a go.
“This horse used to be with Willie Muir, and I haven’t had him long enough to know whether he would take three
quick races, but he has done the job well.”
Ted Durcan reported that Albashoosh, who led them home on the far side, was always struggling to live with the near side group, and winning jockey Adrian Nicholls said: “We were calling the shots after the first furlong, and it seems the place to be. Merlin’s Dancer showed tremendous speed, especially as I’ve always considered him better at six furlongs.”
Nicholls snr, showered in congratulations, said: ”All my owners get on well and most make this an annual holiday, so we thought we might as well run as many as possible. They’ve all been over to pat Eamon on the back, and he would do the same if someone else had won.”

MYSTIC MEG SAVES BOOKIES
Bookies, who have taken a bit of battering this week, feared the worst when 11-8 favourite Pongee struck the front half-way up the straight in the Vodafone Fillies’ Stakes, but the layers were rescued by none other than Mystic Meg, whose own horse Astrocharm, a 12-1 chance, wore down the leader inside the final furlong to win by three parts of a length.
Winning trainer Mark Tompkins, based in Newmarket, does not have many runners at Goodwood - “I don’t like the traffic” - and, while he came down “in the hope of some black type”, he observed that “clearly Meg knew we were destined for something better !”
Tompkins, who met Mystic Meg at a Newmarket Open Day some years ago, added: “I got to know Meg then and we get on well. She has horses with me since and absolutely loves it - I am so thrilled for her. She will be over the moon about this success.
“I bought Astrocharm for only 4,500 guineas and that is her seventh win. I honestly thought she would be third or fourth, but she is tough, 100 per cent genuine and she wants to do it for you. She has done it really well and has been marvellous this year.
“Neil (Callan) gave her a lovely ride - like so many of mine she wasn’t right last season, when she was probably also too high in the handicap, but Meg (Lake) was keen to keep her in training as she has started to gather together a band of broodmares, so it is a case of mission accomplished. Now we might have a look at the Melrose at York.”
Tompkins revealed that his stable-star Franklin’s Gardens is scheduled to make his much-awaited comeback in the Group 3 Rose of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock next Saturday.
He said: “He pulled muscles when he last ran at Sandown in the spring, but we have got it right again and we are aiming at Haydock because that is the one place we might get some easy ground.”

NEIL CALLAN DELIGHTED
The winning jockey Neil Callan, having his 44th success of the year on Astrocharm, said: “Once I pulled her out and had room, I felt her coming underneath me and I thought I only had the favourite on the rail to beat.
“Once I got upsides Pongee, I put my stick down, Astrocharm is so game and so tough and genuine. She does everything for you.
“She is improving really well. She won a little handicap at Pontefract quite comfortably and was second to the horse of Mr Cumani’s who is favourite for the Ebor (Mephisto).
“The step up in trip has pulled out a bit more improvement in her and hopefully it is up from here.”
KERRIN MCEVOY BANNED FOR TWO DAYS
Kerrin McEvoy was suspended for two days - Wednesday and Thursday, August 11 & 12 - for careless riding in the first race, the Vodafone Fillies Stakes.
The stewards found that his mount Feat interfered with Ballerina Suprema a mile from home.

FAVOURITE BEATEN
“She has run a very, very good race under all that weight and I am delighted with her,” said Luca Cumani after the 11/8 favourite Pongee had failed by three-quarters of a length to repel Astrocharm in the opening Group Three Vodafone Fillies’ Stakes.
“She got the better of Summitville’s challenge but then found Astrocharm’s just too much, but she was trying to give her 5lb and it is all good form for her stablemate Mephisto who beat Astrocharm when he won at Newmarket two runs ago,” said the trainer.
“She is very much still improving and we might just be able to squeeze in a run in the Galtres Stakes (at York), a race I have won a few times, if things work out that way,” Cumani went on.
“But if we have to miss that then we will send her for the Park Hill (at Doncaster). It does not matter to her whether she is running over a mile and a half or a mile and three-quarters and she enjoys good, fast ground,” Cumani went on.

FONG’S THONG ‘COULD BE THE ONE’
Brian Meehan left no doubt about the regard in which he holds Fong’s Thong after the colt had made just about all the running to take the Vodafone Thoroughbred Stakes by two lengths from Mandobi.
“I think he could be one of those horses who comes along just once in a while,” said Meehan after the chestnut had consolidated Jimmy Fortune’s at the top of the table for the Racing UK Jockeys’ Challenge with his fourth success at the meeting.
Agent Johnny McKeever, who looks after equine matters in this country for the colt’s US owner Joe Albritton, explained that discussion between owner and American trainer Frank Brothers, who was in charge of Fong’s Thong last year, resulted in the decision to send the colt to England.
“They felt that he would be more suited by racing on turf,” McKeever explained.
“He came to me in April but he still had his coat and so we have taken our time with him,” said Meehan. “He doesn’t have to make the running, as he did here, in fact he doesn’t have to do anything.
“I have no plans for him at the moment. He is in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Group One Ascot, end September) but I really have no idea where he will go next. The Hungerford (at Newbury) might be a possibility but I am very much not committed to any race; we will just see how he comes along.”

GOOD RACE
Frankie Dettori and Dane O’Neill agreed that they had been beaten by an above-average performer in Fong’s Thong in the Vodafone Thoroughbred Stakes.
Dettori, who rode the two lengths runner-up Mandobi, winner of the Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot, said: “No excuses - a stronger gallop would have helped, but when I attacked the winner found more. He looks a decent horse.”
Those sentiments were echoed by Dane O’Neill, who rode third-placed King’s Point. He said: “The winner looks very good - my fellow ran right up to his best, but we were beaten by a better one.”
Richard Hannon, who trains King’s Point, said: “He got the mile well, and the key is the fast ground, which he loves. There is a seven furlong conditions race in Ireland which we might have a look at.”

FALLON FINALLY BREAKS HIS DUCK
Kieren Fallon has suffered a frustrating Glorious Goodwood this year, but the champion jockey belatedly opened his account at the meeting when Favourable Terms, an 11-2 chance for the Group One Vodafone Nassau Stakes, held on by a fast diminishing short head from the in-foal Silence Is Golden, who finished like a rocket and would have prevailed in one more stride. Chorist, the 6-4 favourite, was a neck back in third.
Sir Michael Stoute, celebrating his seventh win in this prestigious race and his third in a row, said: “I thought Kieren did not shine earlier in the week, but he looked pretty good there.”
Breathing a sigh of relief when the stewards, who had held an enquiry into possible interference between Favourable Terms and third-placed Chorist, the 6-4 favourite, announced that the result was unchanged, added: “Islington would be the best of my Nassau winners, but this filly has a lot of talent.
“She has had a lot of problems with her back and sometimes it compromises her. Even after she gallops, she has to have physio treatment - they work on her all the time.
“We have plenty of options as she is equally effective at a mile or 10 furlongs, but we will talk to Sheikh Maktoum before making plans.”
Asked whether the Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Turf in Texas might be a long-term objective for Favourable Terms, Stoute joked: “Texas is so far away that I can’t even spell it!”

NEARLY AN IDEAL SWANSONG
“Two more strides and she’s in front,” said Brian Meehan after Silence Is Golden had failed by a short head to catch Favourable Terms in the Group 1 Vodafone Nassau Stakes.
“What a marvellous buy she was by (agent) Linda Sadler; she has been a banker for me through the last two seasons and more than once she has been a vital part of the team.
“But that will almost certainly have been her last run, as we think she is in foal to Medicean and if she is she won’t be allowed to run after Wednesday.
“She will have a scan on Monday to confirm that she is in foal -- we are very confident that she is -- and if that proves to be the case then we will let her down and she will go off to stud.
“I have had a bet with her owner Jo Semple about the sex of the foal. She wants a colt so I have bet her that she gets a filly.”

GODOLPHIN DUO DISAPPOINT
Zosima and Echoes In Eternity, the two Godolphin fillies, disappointed their trainer Saeed bin Suroor by finishing fourth and fifth respectively.
He said: “I was disappointed with both of them. I don’t think Zosima stayed 10 furlongs and we will drop her in both distance and class, looking for a mile Listed or Group Three race.”
Frankie Dettori, who rode Zosima, reported that she was also not suited by the undulating course.
FALLON SUSPENDED A DAY
Keiren Fallon was suspended for a day for careless riding - the stewards found that Favourable Terms, the winner of the Vodafone Nassau Stakes, had interfered with the third Chorist in the final furlong.
His suspension will be on Wednesday, August 11.

HANNON FINALLY STRIKES
Richard Hannon, who had been walking his box all week as he suffered two seconds and a third, including a short head defeat with Boogie Street in the King George Stakes, finally bagged his Glorious Goodwood winner when Easy Feeling took the Vodafone Racegoers Club Nursery.
Hannon, who also saddled third-placed Come Good, in whom he owns a share, had mixed feelings about the result.
He said: “All credit to Easy Feeling, who will be aimed at the Tattersalls Sales race at The Curragh next month, but Ryan (Moore) flattened Come Good when the chips were down - and he’s my horse!
“It’s taken me a long time to get on the scoresheet, but first and third is not bad, and Come Good, who has been gelded since he last ran, will definitely win when we step him up to seven furlongs.”

JONES LOSES HER CLAIM
Star apprentice Lisa Jones rode her 95th winner and thus lost her claim when Keep Bacckinhit sprang a 20-1 surprise in the Vodafone Nursery, though she will be able to ride with a 3lb allowance until Wednesday, while the figures of her career are checked.
“I am relieved to have done it, though it has been only a week since my previous winner so I haven’t had to wait too long, and very happy, rather than proud, to have done so.
“The first winner was at Southwell back in 2000, which seems a long time ago now, and the highlight so far has been when I won the final of the Mail on Sunday series last year on Pagan Prince at Ascot.
“I am very grateful for the support I have received from the trainers who have put me up and really appreciate what they have done for me. I just hope that they will continue to support me in the way that they have and from what they have said I think they will do so.
“As far as I am concerned I shall just have to keep my head down and work and ride hard as I try to ride more winners.”
Gary Moore, who trains Keep Bacckinhit, has put Jones up quite a lot in the winter on his all weather horses and is clearly one of the trainers who thinks highly of her ability.

LISA JONES DOES IT AGAIN
No sooner had she lost her right to claim than leading woman rider Lisa Jones went out and rode the very next winner, Ringsider, who justified 4-1 favouritism when quickening up stylishly after a brave dash to the far rails entering the final furlong to take the Vodafone Apprentice Handicap.
This was the first ride that Lisa has had for winning trainer Gerard Butler, who was lavish in his praise of the 21-year-old apprentice.
Butler said: “It takes balls to make such a dramatic switch on a favourite at a big meeting like this, but Lisa is riding with bags of confidence and she got away with it.
“It’s great to get a winner at Glorious Goodwood - we have had plenty run well this week but winners have eluded us and, while I contemplated packing my bags last night and heading home, I knew this fellow, who ran well here on Tuesday, would go close.
“I am also delighted for Sean O’Donoghue and Michael Deegan, who own Ringsider. I bought this horse as a yearling but things did not work out last year and, as you know, we could not buy a winner for the first half of this season.
“But I told them that if they hung on in there then we might get him right for a shot at Glorious Goodwood and it has all worked out great.”
SUSPENDED
Sam Hitchcott, who finished fourth on Al Garhoud in the Vodafone Nursery, was found to have hampered Emerald Penang on the final bend and was deemed guilty of careless riding and suspended for one day (Aug 11).

GOING
Raceday clerk of the course Seamus Buckley reports the ground for the final day of Glorious Goodwood as:
GOOD TO FIRM
Buckley, who revealed that his going stick measured 9.5, said: “We put approximately seven millimetres of water on the last four furlongs up the straight overnight and also watered the first four furlongs of the mile and a quarter of the Vodafone Nassau Stakes course.
“I am delighted with the effect that the watering has had on the track, and everyone has been very complimentary about the state of the ground this week, with precious few complaints.”
FABRICIUS PRAISES GROUNDSTAFF
“Four down and one to go - and what a wonderful job the groundstaff have done.” That was the declaration of Goodwood managing director Rod Fabricius as he prepared for lift-off on the final day of the ‘Glorious’ meeting.
Expressing his thanks to raceday clerk of the course Seamus Buckley and his team of groundstaff, Fabricius said: “I would like to send them a massive vote of confidence for their extensive watering programme leading up to the meeting, which has ensured that we have retained moisture in the ground throughout the week, despite the hot and sunny conditions.”
Casting his eyes towards the clear blue skies, Fabricius added: “We have also been blessed with some fantastic weather this week, some terrific racing, very encouraging crowd figures and, arguably, a record number of runners.
“We certainly won’t be able to boast the same amount of runners next year, when the 14-strong BHB maximum takes effect for many of our races, which will include Friday’s consolation race, the Stewards Sprint Handicap.”
However, no sooner will the curtain come down on another ‘Glorious’ meeting than Fabricius and his team will sit down next week and plan for 2005.
He added: “We always review the strength and weaknesses of each of the five days, and I do believe that switching the Glorious Stakes to a weight-for-age conditions race instead of a Rated Stakes has been a success.
“I must confess I was apprehensive, but we made the move in the hope that, as a conditions race, we might reach the required standard to become a candidate for upgrading to Group Three status.
“We intend reducing the distance of the Glorious Stakes by a furlong to 11 furlongs next year. We introduced that distance to Goodwood three years ago, and it is high time that we featured it at our big meeting.”
Fabricius, who is also delighted with the strength on the handicaps, though he would prefer to have just the one 48-hour declaration race each day, signs off with an apprentice handicap as the 35th and final race of this year’s meeting.
He explained: “While I cannot previously recall an apprentice race at this fixture, we recognise that the professional jockeys have endured a long week and many will be moving on to evening meetings, which gives us the opportunity to provide inexperienced riders their own race at our flagship meeting.”
BETTING NEWS
Seeing is believing and, despite The Racing Post’s predictions that the high numbers would come out on top in today’s Vodafone Stewards’ Cup, punters are going against the statistics and siding with the low numbers, judged by this morning’s major moves in the offices.
The stands’ side group certainly had the finish of the consolation race, the Stewards’ Sprint, to themselves on Friday, and Pic Up Sticks, who got no run whatsoever at Ascot last Sunday, is the new clear favourite with Corals, Victor Chandler and Ladbrokes.
All three firms offered 11-1 this morning, but Mick Channon’s sprinter, drawn 11 and part-owned by former England soccer star Alan Ball, is down to 9-1 with Corals and Ladbrokes and is a point shorter with Chandlers.
David Stevens of Corals said: “The earlybirds were on for Pic Up Sticks, and it was like World Cup Final morning in 1966. Everyone wants to be with Bally!”
Mutawaqed, who will have the option of coming from either side, being drawn in stall 14, has also been very popular and has been cut to 10-1 from 12-1 with both Corals and Chandlers, with the former reporting good money for Two Step Kid (12-1 from 14-1), who starts from stall six.
Other low numbers that have been well supported with Ladbrokes this morning are Material Witness, drawn four and cut to 16-1 from 20-1, and Raccoon, who will start one off the fence and has been an each-way order from 33-1 to 25-1.
However, not everyone is totally convinced that a high draw will prove an inconvenience, and Chandlers offer of 40-1 about Proud Boast, one of the runners for Dandy Nicholls and drawn in 27, was too big for some punters to resist and Peter Savill’s second-string was shaved to 33-1.
MEETING’S HONOURS UP FOR GRABS
Jimmy Fortune’s return to the top flight after a long time out with back problems is well illustrated by the fact that he goes into the final day of Glorious Goodwood leading the way in the race for the Racing UK Trophy for the top rider at at the meeting.
But his total of three is only one more than no fewer than six of his colleagues, so there looks set to be a battle royal before the outcome is decided.
Fortune has a busy day with five rides and some good chances among them and an outstanding one on Pongee in the opening Vodafone Fillies’ Stakes (2.00). Fong’s Thong has good prospects in the Vodafone Thoroughbred Stakes (2.30) and Royal Storm could run well on his best form in the Vodafone Stewards’ Cup (3.35).
Among those with two winners is Frankie Dettori, who has four rides through the afternoon. All four are capable of winning at their sharpest, and maybe the best of the quartet is Zosima in the Vodafone Nassau Stakes (3.05), and Mandobi should go close in the Vodafone Thoroughbred Stakes.
Of the others on a score of two, Johnny Murtagh, Richard Quinn and Joe Fanning are not riding here today, but Seb Sanders and Darryll Holland are in action. Holland will be hopeful of good runs from Chorist in the Nassau and Fantasy Believer in the Stewards’ Cup, and Sanders’ brightest hope is Pivotal Point in the big handicap.
Comparing this year’s table with those of past years there are several major absentees and none more than champion Kieren Fallon, who won the title with six winners last season and enjoyed an amazing eight strikes in 1998, has yet to score this term. He has a ride in every race today in which he is eligible and maybe his best hope is on the strongly-fancied High Reach in the Stewards’ Cup.
On the training front Saeed bin Suroor is top man at the moment with three winners to his name, one on every day apart from Wednesday, and he is hoping to add to the Godolphin gains with Zosima in the Nassau. He also has Echoes In Eternity in that race, but is not involved in any other.
Among those with two winners at the meeting is Mark Johnston, who has topped the list last year and in 2002 and 2000 as well as being joint leader in 2001. This time, though, he has only one chance to improve his splendid Goodwood record - Exit Smiling in the Vodafone Nursery (4.45).
