FOURTH DAY, FRIDAY, JULY 30

LESTER PIGGOTT RETURNS TO GOODWOOD ON FINAL DAY OF FESTIVAL MEETING

Lester Pigott, who won the top jockey award numerous times Goodwood’s Festival Meeting, is to return to the West Sussex track tomorrow (Saturday, August 31) to present the Racing UK Trophy to this year’s leading jockey over the five days.

Piggott rode an incredible 117 winner at the Festival Meeting. Petit Etoile, one of the greatest fillies of all time, was one of Piggott’s six winners of the Sussex Stakes and the former jockey enjoyed the same number of victories in the Richmond Stakes.

The Vodafone Stewards’ Cup, one of the betting highlights of the meeting but a race Piggott won only once (on Jukebox in 1970), is one of the highlights of the final day of ‘Glorious Goodwood’, along with the Group One Vodafone Nassau Stakes.

Racegoers will have an opportunity to meet the record-breaking jockey throughout the afternoon, as he will be signing copies of his book, ‘Lester’s Derbys’, which was released earlier this year. The book, written in conjunction with Sean Magee, commemorates Piggott’s record nine victories in the Vodafone Derby, the first of which was the aptly names Never Say Die, 50 years ago in 1954.

Piggott will be signing copies of the book at the Osborne Studio Gallery boutique (Richmond Enclosure) after the second and third races and at the National Stud stand (Gordon Enclosure) after the fourth race of the afternoon.

MEMORABLE VODAFONE NASSAU STAKES IN PROSPECT

This year’s Vodafone Nassau Stakes has attracted six of the best fillies in Britain.

Godolphin is represented by Zosima and Echoes In Eternity. The former, who finished the two and a half length third behind Celtic Heroine over a mile in the Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 16 on her British debut, will have the assistance of Frankie Dettori in the saddle. The Capote filly won three races at Arlington in Chicago last year on dirt including the Grade Three Arlington-Washington Lassie Stakes in September, when driven out to beat Everyday Angel by a length.

Dettori said: “We were thinking of running Zosima in the William Hill Mile but there was no Russian Rhythm or Soviet Song in this Group One race so we decided to have a shot at some black type. She’s a nice filly who has done nothing wrong.”

Australian Kerrin McEvoy will be on board Echoes In Eternity, the winner of last season’s Group Two Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket. On her most recent start, she was a creditable fourth behind Soviet Song in the Group Two Ridgewood Pearl Stakes at the Curragh in May - that form has been franked in no uncertain terms by the winner’s two subsequent Group One victories including in the Cantor Odds Sussex Stakes at Goodwood on Wednesday.

Trainer Saeed bin Suroor revealed: “Zosima and Echoes In Eternity showed by their last work that they are ready to run - they worked nicely.

“I am happy with the fillies and we hope they can both run better this time. The fast ground
should suit them.”

The William Haggas-trained Chorist is chasing a hat-trick having secured a Listed race at Pontefract and the Group One Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh last month. If she can remain unbeaten this season, there should be emotional scenes in the winner’s enclosure as she represents owner/breeder Cheveley Park Stud, who scored last year with Russian Rhythm.

That last winner was trained by Sir Michael Stoute, who also saddled the previous year’s Vodafone Nassau heroine in Islington. This year he runs Favourable Terms, who winning jockey Kieren Fallon waxed lyrically about when taking the Group Two Windsor Forest Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.

Silence Is Golden hails from Brian Meehan’s Lambourn yard. She made a winning seasonal bow in the Rosebery Stakes at Kempton in April, and on her last start was just held by Crocodile Dundee by a neck in a Listed race at Sandown on the second day of July.

Clive Brittain, who had a 50/1 winner at Goodwood on Tuesday, runs Menhoubah, who has already won a European classic this term. She denied Step Danzer by one and a quarter lengths in the Italian Oaks at San Siro in May. She was then well beaten in the French equivalent on her last outing the following month.

GROUND

Seamus Buckley, Goodwood’s Raceday Clerk of the Course, reported this evening: “The ground rode well today despite the drying conditions.

“I’m delighted that we watered overnight and we will do the same again over the last four furlongs this evening, putting approximately 7mm on.

“We will also be watering the first four furlongs of the 1m 2f course for tomorrow’s Vodafone Nassau Stakes.”

Race One - Glorious Stakes
Winner’s Quotes

FAVOURITES DOMINATE

Favourite backers have enjoyed a great week and they got off to a flyer when Alkaased, 11-4 market-leader for the Listed Glorious Stakes, produced a polished performance to hold the sustained challenge of First Charter by a neck, the pair pulling six lengths clear of third Alkaadhem.

Jimmy Fortune, who rode Alkhaased to win the Old Newton Cup at Haydock last time, retained the mount, and winning trainer Luca Cumani said: “Jimmy was apprenticed to me in the late 80s, and he has always been a very strong rider and a cool one - he uses his head.

“He gave the horse a very good ride at Haydock last time and so we stayed with Jimmy because he likes the horse and we liked the way he rode Alkaased.

“He gave the horse another good ride - it was a very strong pace and he sat in a good position, took it up and he said when the second came at him, Alkaased would not give up, battling, battling, stretching all the way to the line. They pulled a long way clear of the third so it was a pleasing performance.

“Jimmy deserves a bit of luck - he had bad luck all of last year - god knows how much pain he would have had - physical and mental - being away from the races.”

Fortune needed to be strong to hold off Kieren Fallon - still looking for that elusive first winner of the meeting - and Cumani rates the winner highly.

He said: “That rules out the Ebor - his penalty would take his weight up to 9st 12lb which is a bit much and, in any event, we already have Mephisto lined up for York - so we might have to look for some black type.”

Jimmy Fortune commented: “This horse gave me a lovely ride in the Old Newton Cup - he felt like a horse who would go on and progress. He has shown today he is a nice horse.

“Kieren is a hard man to beat. It was pretty difficult getting back from my injury (back) but I have had a lot of support from plenty of big yards. I really appreciate their help.”

GROUND

After the first race, the following jockeys reported the ground as:

Frankie Dettori, rider of Millstreet, said: “Good to firm.”

Kieren Fallon, rider of runner-up First Charter, said: “Same as yesterday.”

Steve Drowne, rider of Persian Lightning, said: “There seemed to be more water on the course.”

Richard Hills, rider of third-placed Alkaadhem, said: “Good to firm, good.”

Jimmy Fortune, rider of winner Alkaased, said: “Good, fast ground.”

Johnny Murtagh, rider of Persian Majesty, said: “Lovely, perfect.”

Eddie Ahern, rider of Compton Bolter, said: “It felt better - good, fast ground.”

RACE 2 OAK TREE STAKES
WIN QUOTES

ONE-TWO FOR GOSDEN

Trainer John Gosden was the appropriate winner of the Oak Tree Stakes with Phantom Wind and he also handled the runner-up Nyramba.

The Manton-based handler used to train in California, where Oak Tree Meeting is run every year at Santa Anita. Goodwood has a longstanding relationship with the Oak Tree Racing Association and the Goodwood Breeders’ Cup Handicap is run at the American course

“I was leading trainer at Oak Tree twice in the 1980s. Phantom Wind is back and, if you remember, her mother Ryafan, whom I trained, didn’t come right until July when she won the Falmouth Stakes and the Nassau Stakes here [in 1997] and this filly is the same.

“I thought that Nyramba would be sharper but the winner has clicked - sometimes in life you can’t beat family and genes and that’s especially right with the fillies.

“We made a great start this season but racecourse stables are great for picking up illnesses and I stopped running my horses, vaccinated everything and spent two weeks trotting them. We’ve got going again now quietly and that’s the way it will be until September.

“Basically as a trainer you are a stockman and, like any athlete, you have to freshen up your charges every now and then, back off and give them time and build your operation up again.”

Asked about Day Flight, who like Phantom Wind is owned by Prince Khalid Abdulla, Gosden said: “He’ll go for an Arc trial in September and then the Arc and there is a rather good horse knocking around called Doyen and I would like to take him on.”

Winning jockey Steve Drowne added: “My filly is nice and she was able to win with a bit up her sleeve. She picked up nicely and was going away strongly at the end and she deserves her chance in a higher grade now.”

Race Three: William Hill Mile
Winner’s Quotes:

FAVOURITE WINS WILLIAM HILL AT LAST

In 16 previous runnings, the favourite had never won the £100,000 William Hill Mile, but Ancient World, 9-2 favourite for this year’s race, bucked the trend when defying the burden of 9st 10lb, therefore equally the weight-carrying performance of Waajib in the inaugural running in 1987.

Ancient World broke well from his good draw of 20, and Frankie Dettori angled to get a run at the two-furlong pole and got an immediate response, the top-weight quickening up well to score a convincing success over Impeller and Tuning Fork.

Saeed bin Suroor, trainer of Ancient World, is unaccustomed to having runners in handicaps and, in jocular mood, he confessed: “It took me 10 minutes to get the feeling back in my hands after I carried out Frankie’s saddle, but Ancient World has been working like a Group horse at home and gelding him has made a big difference. He certainly lost a bit of weight!”

Simon Crisford, racing manager to Godolphin, said: ”Ancient World is a class act, but he used to get himself worked up, so we had no option but to have him cut. This definitely puts him into Listed or Group category

“Frankie gave him a super ride - he broke from the gates well, just had him up sitting a few lengths off the pace in the boxseat and never looked like getting beat.

“Though he has been working out of his skin, he has let us down twice before so we couldn’t be over confident.

“He has always been a difficult horse, managing to get himself really worked up before his races. That was against him in his previous two starts this year and subsequently he is much better for being gelded. We did a lot of paddock schooling at Newmarket Racecourse, and it has all paid off.

“He went into this race off a rating of 103 and we knew he would be capable of running to it but the problem with him is that he had let us down on two previous starts.

“We haven’t had too many runners in handicaps, but we have a broader base of horses this year and this is a good prize.

“Zosima, who might have run in this race, is a lovely filly but don’t forget she is a Group winner already and the Nassau looked like it would cut up and be a good opportunity for her. She will probably stay a mile and quarter well. We felt the sensible thing to do with her was to run in the Group One race - she has been working exceptionally well and is a lovely filly but it is amassice step-up in class for her.”

FRANKIE DETTORI DELIGHTED

Frankie Dettori, riding his first winner of the William Hill Mile on Ancient World, said: “They went a good gallop and I knew they would split at some point. It would then be a matter of finding the right gap.

“I saw Royston (ffrench) move to the left and I took the gap. I was in the boxseat all the way and Ancient World won very well.

“We have always thought he was a good horse. He was fine everywhere else bar racing. The gelding has made a tremendous difference physically and mentally.

“To win the William Hill Mile with 9st 10lb is a great achievement. This is a big race and I have never won it before.

“Things are picking up and we have still have a few more races left at this meeting.”

RACE 3 WILLIAM HILL MILE
PLACE QUOTES

I LOVE HIM

Willie Muir watched Impeller finish second for the second time in three days at this meeting and declared: “I’m fed up of talking to you press boys after this horse has finished second but seriously I really have enjoyed it.

“He deserves a big race and he’s as brave as they come and finds one too good every time. That was a fantastic run - he gets 1m 2f and he gets 1m. I think we’ll aim him at the Cambridgeshire now.

“First of all he’ll go to Newmarket next week before he gets re-handicapped but believe me, he is not ungenuine. This horse only ran two days ago.

“He was only beaten just over a length in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot and he’s been second twice here - how can we grumble.

“I love him and he takes no training - I don’t know what his best trip is and if you know, I would appreciate it if you could tell me!”

John Akehurst, trainer of third-placed Tuning Fork, returned at 80/1, said: “That’s the first time that Darryll [Holland] has ridden him and I said to him, I don’t know what’s wrong with this horse and it will be good to get a fresh opinion from you.”

The first two were drawn 20 and 19, whereas Tuning Fork came out of stall two.

“If he had been drawn high he would have gone close and the owner gave quite a lot of money for this horse - he’s won £11,000 today so there’s quite a way to go.

“My horses have been wrong, wrong, wrong and I’ve had problems since January. I’m delighted with that run - he’ll go on from that and, after all, he was second in the Dante and he’s still young and we like him. He might go to Germany for a Group Two race.”

RACE 4 RICHMOND STAKES
WIN QUOTES

MONTGOMERY’S ARCH PREVAILS

Montgomery’s Arch stepped up on his Folkestone maiden success to beat Mystical Land by a neck in the Richmond Stakes.

Winning trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam said: “That was fantastic - I always thought that he was a pretty good horse and I did say before his Folkestone win, there are two certainties in life, this horse wins at Folkestone and we die.

“I don’t have too many two-year-olds and we’re doing alright. This horse has won a Group Two so I suppose he’ll have to go for a Group One now. Captain Hurricane [winner of Newmarket’s July Stakes] will go one place and this one somewhere else - they won’t meet each other.

“This horse wants further and I wanted to go over seven furlongs but there was no other race. He probably won’t go for the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster - the Dewhurst [Stakes at Newmarket] or the Middle Park [Stakes at Newmarket] could be the races.

“Captain Hurricane will go for the Morny. Montgomery’s Arch didn’t make a bid at the Breeze Up Sales and we bought him for the owner of African Dreams.

“The sire [Arch] won over six furlongs and 1m 2f on dirt - we were going to go for the Washington Singer Stakes with this horse and I’m glad that we changed our minds.”

FOURTH DAY, FRIDAY, JULY 30

Race Four - Richmond Stakes
Placed Quotes:

BLUE DAKOTA PULLS UP FEELINGLY

Blue Dakota lost his four-race unbeaten record when trailing in last but one in the Richmond Stakes, but jockey Eddie Ahern felt that Jeremy Noseda’s Royal Ascot winner, who started 9-4 favourite, had possibly sustained an injury during the race.

Ahern said: “Blue Dakota was a bit free early on, which we expected, but when I pulled him out to go after Frankie (Dettori) on Mystical Land I felt him slip back and he might well have pulled a muscle in his hind quarters.”

Both John Gosden and Frankie Dettori were delighted with runner-up Mystical Land, who inched ahead inside the final furlong but was worried out of it close home and beaten a neck.

Dettori told Gosden “we’ve been beaten by a decent horse,” and the Manton trainer is now planning a tilt at the Prix Morny in France.

Gosden said: ”Mythical Land is always a bit tentative on this fast ground, and he doesn’t really enjoy it.

“There might be a bit more juice at Deauville, and the Morny looks the perfect race - I thought he’d run well today, but I am always afraid of the inexperienced improver in this race.”

Ted Durcan escaped injury after his mount Obe Gold came down after just one furlong.

The jockey was angry, claiming that a photographer (Paul Lucas) got too close when sitting on a wall near the stands’ rail, but, apart from a graze on his chin, he was unscathed.

However, Lucas insisted that he was well away from Obe Gold when the horse unshipped Durcan, and, though shaken himself, he was at pains to ensure that both Durcan and Obe Gold were OK.

Race Five - Turf Club Rated Stakes
Winner’s Quotes

McCARTHY CELEBRATES BIGGEST WIN

Tim McCarthy, who enjoyed his finest moment in the saddle when steering Fighting Words to victory in the Kim Muir Trophy at the Cheltenham Festival 10 years ago, celebrated his biggest winner as a trainer when Jimmy Ryan won the Turf Club Rated Stakes.

And significantly, with tomorrow’s Vodafone Stewards Cup in mind, not only was the winner drawn one, but the third, fourth and fifth came out of stalls three, five and six respectively, so speculation that the high numbers would have the advantage in the big sprint might be premature.

McCarthy, who only has a dozen horses, said: ”This is my first Goodwood winner, but we have always rated Jimmy Ryan highly and we have made an entry for the Flying Five at The Curragh on September 5 and might even take in a Listed race at Beverley on the way.

“It might be too much to ask for a David v Goliath result in Ireland, but they can’t take this feeling away from me.

“Jimmy Ryan is named after his Nottingham owner and, though he won over six furlongs as a two-year-old, he looked not to be getting the trip this year, so we dropped him back a furlong here to find out whether he was a monkey.”

Paul d’Arcy, who trained runner-up Treasure Cay, said: “The handicapper should drop him now - I’m ever hopeful!”

More seriously, Kevin Darley, who rode Treasure Cay drawn 18,, said: “Once my lead horses had gone, he was on his own.”

RACE 6 EBF TRUNDLE MAIDEN STAKES
WIN QUOTES
JONQUIL GOES IN

Jonquil improved for his debut fourth at Newbury by winning the EBF Trundle Maiden Stakes by a length and a half from Looks Could Kill, giving jockey Jimmy Fortune a 125.56/1 treble for the day and the lead in the Racing UK leading jockey table for the meeting

Winning trainer John Gosden said: “He is a nice horse and for the racing connoisseur it was interesting to see that he was on the wrong leg all the way.

“He ran nicely at Newbury where he was learning and a bit green - he was green again today and turning right a horse wants to lead with the off-fore, turning left he wants to lead with the near-fore.

“That was a promising run and he now goes for a Listed race at Deauville. He didn’t handle the bend because he was on the wrong leg and off balance - if a horse did that in the Derby at Epsom they would end up in the funfair!

“Hopefully, he can step up in grade, win a Listed race and then go for Group races.

“My two-year-olds have been running well but I am better known for my seven-furlong/mile juveniles during September and October. Quite often I leave them unraced for their three-year-old careers.

Gerard Butler was delighted with Looks Could Kill - “One of four very nice two-year-olds that I have for the newly-formed It’s A Breeze Partnership.”

Similarly pleased was Saeed bin Suroor, who trained third-placed Silent Jo. He said: “The colt was a bit green early on but he got the hang of things and was staying on well at the end. I have trained two-year-olds before but never this many and I have already grown three grey hairs!”

Race Seven - Stewards Sprint Handicap
Winner’s Quotes:

LOW NUMBERS HAVE THE CALL AT REHEARSAL

Merlin’s Dancer gave Dandy Nicholls yet another celebration success in the Stewards’ Sprint Handicap, the consolation race for tomorrow’s Vodafone-sponsored Stewards’ Cup.

And with only one of the first six home coming from the far side group - fourth-placed Albashoosh, also trained by Nicholls and beaten three lengths - the winning trainer, whose three runners tomorrow are all drawn high, is convinced that he is on the wrong side.

Nicholls said: ”We all jumped in too quick and chose to go high at the draw, and I soon realised that there was no pace over there. They have done a bit of work on the drainage and I feel sure that the Stewards’ Cup winner will come from the low numbers.”

Merlin’s Dancer, one of 11 horses that Nicholls saddled in this race, was having his third run in six days, having run at Ascot on Sunday and again down here on Wednesday.

Nicholls added: “Eamon Maher (owner) and I went and had a look after racing on Wednesday and there was not a scratch on him. He was bucking and kicking, so we decided to have a go.

“This horse used to be with Willie Muir, and I haven’t had him long enough to know whether he would take three quick races, but he has done the job well.”

Ted Durcan reported that Albashoosh, who led them home on the far side, was always struggling to live with the near side group, and winning jockey Adrian Nicholls said: “We were calling the shots after the first furlong, and it seems the place to be. Merlin’s Dancer showed tremendous speed, especially as I’ve always considered him better at six furlongs.”

Nicholls snr, showered in congratulations, said: ”All my owners get on well and most make this an annual holiday, so we thought we might as well run as many as possible. They’ve all been over to pat Eamon on the back, and he would do the same if someone else had won.”

Paddy Power have revised their odds for tomorrow’s Vodafone Stewards’ Cup, going 10/1 High Reach & Pivotal Point, 11/1 Fantasy Believer & Pic Up Sticks, 12/1 Coconut Penang & Mutawaqed, Texas Gold and Two Step Kid, 14/1 bar.

DRAW

Ahead of tomorrow’s Vodafone Stewards’ Cup, the following jockeys made these comments after the Stewards’ Sprint Handicap:

Liam Treadwell, who emerged from stall 17 on Loyal Tycoon, said: “The stands’ side was always in front and always travelling better.”

Ryan Moore, who emerged from stall 24 on Parkside Pursuit, said: “Every sprint has been won up the stands’ side this week and we were well behind our end.”

Ted Durcan, who emerged from stall 26 on Albashoosh, said: “We were always behind on our side but there was no pace - it’s not the draw but whether you have any pace on your side.”

Frankie McDonald, who emerged from stall 18 on Devon Flame, said: “I was on the far side but you are better off with a low draw - I went to the far rail and they were always going better on the other side, four or five lengths clear.”

Royston Ffrench, who emerged from stall 6 on Time To Remember, said: “That race was won by the horse next to me and he had the rail which was a big advantage - there was plenty of speed on our side and it was the right side for that race.”

TED DURCAN FALL

The stewards looked into the fall of Ted Durcan from Obe Gold in the Richmond Stakes and found it was caused by the colt over-striding.

DETTORI SUSPENDED

Frankie Dettori was suspended for a day - August 10 - for careless riding for interference to Mystical Girl when he rode Ancient World to victory in the William Hill Mile.

QUINN SUSPENDED

Jimmy Quinn, sixth in the William Hill Mile on Audience, was found to have interfered with Sawwaah. The stewards judged this to be careless riding and suspended him for one day - August 10.

EASTERN BREEZE

The Paul d’Arcy-trained Eastern Breeze, owned by Colin Cage and Peter Lupson, broke his off-fore leg during the opening race, the Glorious Stakes

Vets were quickly in attendance but unfortunately the injury was a serious one and Eastern Breeze was humanely put down.

BETTING NEWS

It has been a quiet Glorious Goodwood so far for both Frankie Dettori and Kieren Fallon, but punters reckon that racing’s two leading players in the weighing room will take today’s feature races, with Chic (Fallon) all the rage for the Oak Tree Stakes and Ancient World (Dettori) the steamer for the William Hill Mile.

Both horses were pinpointed by the in-form Pricewise column in The Racing Post, and the 6-1 about the Godolphin-owned Ancient World in the £100,000 mile handicap was in much demand, with Corals, Victor Chandler, Paddy Power and Ladbrokes clipping him a point to 5-1, and Hills going a step further and reducing offers about the topweight to 9-2.

Similarly, Chic, who was almost brought down at Royal Ascot last time, has been heavily backed to get Fallon off the mark, with Corals (from 11-2) and Hills both cutting the filly’s odds to 9-2 (from 13-2), while Victor Chandler also shaved him a point to 5-1, as did Paddy Power

Dave Stevens of Corals said: “Punters have been winning this week despite the lean spell of both Fallon and Dettori, but it is as if they cannot believe it is possible that the big two will be going into the final day with only one winner between them, and they have pulled out their size 10 betting boots.”

Ancient World is well drawn in 20 in the William Hill Mile, as is Dandy Nicholls’s Sawwaah, an each-way plunge with Corals, being backed from 18-1 to 14-1, while the same firm have seen good money for stablemate Proud Boast for tomorrow’s Vodafone Stewards’ Cup.

Proud Boast, one of five runners Nicholls has in the traditional midsummer cavalry charge, has been shortened from 40-1 to 25-1, and Corals, who were also top offer at 18-1 about William Muir’s Texas Gold, have been forced on the retreat and have reduced their quote to 12-1.

Nicholls appears to have brought half his string down from Thirsk in Yorkshire and, though he has no fewer than 11 runners in the consolation race today, the Stewards’ Sprint, Paddy Power clients are convinced that Albashoosh, the mount of Ted Durcan, is the one to be on.

Tony Coleman, the Paddy Power spokesman, said: “The gamble started at midday, and the punters have taken every price possible from 16-1 downwards, and he is down to 9-1. Albashoosh has been put up by one of the leading tipping lines, and this is Dandy’s race, and as he has a great draw we fear the worst.”

Indeed, Paddy Power have come up with a series of different markets featuring the Nicholls yard.

They offer 4-6 about him training the winner of the Stewards’ Sprint, 6-1 to train the winner of tomorrow’s Vodafone Stewards’ Cup and 11-1 about him training both winners, while he is 11-4 to train the first two home in today’s finale and 10-1 to be responsible for the one-two-three.

ROD REFLECTS

Rod Fabricius, Goodwood’s Clerk of the Course and Managing Director, said: “I think we’re heading for a record number of runners this week, which is an acknowledgement of the very good work that the groundstaff have done on the course.

“Given that there will probably be a restriction on the number of runners in many races next year, the record is unlikely ever to be beaten. Whilst I am sure more thought will be given to what is the appropriate limit on numbers of runners in standard races, I personally would hope that the powers that be could consider introducing a safety factor of 16 rather than the reduced number of 14 that clearly has been suggested so far.

“Some of our innovations this week appear to be proving popular - we have had a very favourable reaction to the military bands that we have had playing and the sand sculpture has attracted a considerable amount of media interest. Obviously, we are looking forward to seeing the sculpture of Persian Punch completed by the end of racing today.

“We introduced a new experience for our Richmond Enclosure members in terms of an additional facility called the Oak Tree Club. That has been available to them on a daily booking arrangement and has proved very popular with the capacity of 200 being sold out for the last three days.”

REVIEW OF FIRST THREE DAYS OF
GLORIOUS GOODWOOD

Glorious Goodwood goes into day four and racegoers had things very much in their favour yesterday as string of fancied horses won

Remarkably, Kieren Fallon has drawn a blank on the first three days, while it took Frankie Dettori until the 20th race of the meeting to break the ice, on Godolphin’s Golden Sahara.

Therefore, the cake has been fairly evenly distributed, with the cream going to Johnny Murtagh on the James Fanshawe-trained Soviet Song in the Group One Cantor Odds Sussex Stakes.

Soviet Song, back to her brilliant juvenile best this season, adding this superb victory to her Falmouth Stakes success at the Newmarket July meeting, showed that she is not only the best filly around but also more than capable of beating the colts over the mile.

Fanshawe, encouraged by the fact that there are far more opportunities in the programme book these days for older fillies and mares, believes there is a good chance that the 16,000-strong Elite Racing team will keep her in training next season as a five-year-old.

Mark Johnston is always a force to be reckoned with at Glorious Goodwood and he landed his third win in the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes on Shamardal, who produced a bold display of front-running under Joe Fanning to score impressively on Wednesday. The National Stakes at The Curragh might be the next port of call en route to the Dewhurst.

And Johnston and Fanning topped up their celebrations yesterday when teaming up to win the Lady O Goodwood Cup with Darasim, who also made all the running and ground his rivals into submission.

One-time considered quirky, Darasim seems to have turned over a new lease of life, and Johnston, who was winning his fifth Goodwood Cup, following Royal Rebel and three victories for the never-to-be-forgotten Double Trigger, had even more reason to celebrate as he also trained the runner-up in Royal Rebel and the fourth in Double Obsession.

The trainer is considering the Melbourne Cup for Darasim but only if he gets a fair racing weight, while Royal Rebel, who is likely to retire after next year’s Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot at York, will be aimed at the Prix du Cadran at Longchamp in October.

Ringmoor Down got up in the last stride to foil Boogie Street in yesteday’s King George Stakes, but he is not engaged in the Nunthorpe at York, where Milton Bradley, trainer of third-placed The Tatling, is confident that his charge will run a big race.

Several big gambles have been landed in the betting ring, Luca Cumani’s Mephisto, backed down to 7-2 favourite for the Tatler Summer Season Heritage Handicap on Tuesday, escaping from a pocket just in time under a daring dash from Darryll Holland, while Art Trader, trained by Amanda Perrett and ridden by Johnny Murtagh, was arguably the best-backed horse of the meeting so far in yesterday’s ladbrokes.com Handicap - hammered in the ring from an early 13-2 down to 7-2 favourite - and duly delivered.

Little fish are sweet and Godolphin were happy to be in the number one spot with Golden Sahara in the De Boer EBF Classified Stakes yesterday, but they had earlier lifted the Betfair Cup (Lennox Stakes) on Tuesday, not, as expected, with Dettori’s mount Kheleyf but with Byron, the mount of Aussie ace Kerrin McEvoy.

Shamardal apart, the most impressive two-year-old performance has come from Michael Jarvis’s expensive newcomer Suez, who looked a cut above average in the Findon Maiden Fillies’ Stakes on Wednesday and might well be bound for the Lowther at York.

OLD TIES RAISE £1,500 FOR INJURED JOCKEYS FUND

Goldring Security Services, who for the last five years have begged and bought ties and then sold them as a service to members of the public attending Goodwood Racecourse during the Festival Meeting, have broken all previous records in 2004.

On Friday 30th July, a cheque for £1,500 will be presented to the Injured Jockeys’ Fund following the sale of hundreds of ties, some of which have been recycled many times as racegoers often return their ties at the end of their day at Goodwood.
