GLORIOUS GOODWOOD 2004
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
THIRD DAY, THURSDAY, JULY 29

GORDON ENCLOSURE SOLD OUT FOR ALL TICKET SATURDAY

Tickets for the Gordon Enclosure have completely sold out for the final day of Glorious Goodwood - Saturday 31 July.

Should there be any late cancellations, there may be a small number of Gordon Enclosure tickets available on the East Entrance at 11am on Saturday for £29, but tickets are still available for the Public Enclosure and can be booked online at www.goodwood.co.uk

Any remaining Public Enclosure tickets can be purchased on the day for £14.

Transfers to the Gordon Enclosure will not be available once capacity has been reached.

VODAFONE STEWARDS’ CUP PREVIEW

John Quinn was delighted to have “one on each side” for Saturday’s £100,000 Vodafone Stewards’ Cup, with Fantasy Believer (24) and Caribbean Coral (8) in his bid to take big 30-runner six-furlong handicap back to Malton.

In a race in which the high numbers proved popular with trainers at the draw, Fantasy Believer, who has won two of the his last three races and goes particularly well for Darryll Holland, drew best of the fancied horses in the ante-post market.

Bookmakers were quick to react to the draw, and Corals installed Fantasy Believer as their new favourite at 9-1.

Dave Stevens, the Coral’s spokesman, said: “There does look to be plenty of pace on the stands’ side, but we still favour the high numbers, and Fantastic Believer looks to have everything in his favour - the draw, the form and a top jockey in Darryll.”

Corals then go 10-1 (from 12-1) High Reach, 10-1 Pic Up Sticks, 12-1 Two Step Kid, 12-1 Pivotal Point, 12-1 Mutawaqed (from 8-1), 14-1 Dazzling Bay, 14-1 Cocunut Penang, 16-1 Caribbean Coral, 18-1 Royal Storm, 18-1 Texas Gold, 20-1 bar.

However, Paddy Power has Pic Up Sticks (11) and Mutawaqed (14), both drawn in the middle, as their co-favourites at 9-1, with Pivotal Point, Two Step Kid and Fantasy Believer all on 12-1.

Tony Coleman, representing Paddy Power, said: “We take the view that until the consolation race is run on Friday we won’t really know where the draw advantage lies.

“The fancied horses don’t appear to be have been dealt too many picture cards at the draw, so it looks as if it might still be wide-open.”

Dandy Nicholls, who won with Tayseer four years ago, has five strings to his bow, headed by Fire Up The Band, who has to shoulder a 7lb penalty, taking his weight up to 9st 12lb, which means the topweight, if he runs, will be attempting a new record-carrying performance. Fire Up The Band is due to run in today’s King George Stakes.

The North, who have won three of the last four runnings, with Guinea Hunter (Tim Easterby) and Bond Boy (Bryan Smart) following Tayseer on to the roll of honour, are well represented, for, besides Quinn being two-handed, with the hat-trick seeking Vodafone Dash winner Caribbean Coral (Robert Winston) being accompanied on the journey south by Fantasy Believer, Easterby has two in the race, Dazzling Bay (18), who has been knocking on the door in all the big sprints, being joined by Artie (9), who was last of the 30 runners to get in the race.

Halmahera (29), who went so close last year, is back again and the nine-year-old will be attempting to become the oldest-ever winner of the big sprint, increases the strength of the Northern challenge, and his trainer, Kevin Ryan, was “more than happy” to get 29 and also 30 for his other runner, CD Europe.

HIGH NUMBERS THE CALL IN VODAFONE STEWARDS’ CUP

Raceday Clerk of the Course Seamus Buckley insists that there is only a length between the two sides with regards to any draw bias in Saturday’s £100,00 Vodafone Stewards’ Cup, but trainers are not convinced and were unanimous in plumping for the high numbers when the draw was made at noon today.

Terry Mills’s High Reach was the first horse drawn out of the hat and connections opted for stall 28, and the trend continued from thereon, with Proud Boast, who was next out, in 27, CD Europe 30, Halmahera in 29, Royal Storm 26, Fantasy Believer 24, Texas Gold 25, Native Title 23, Corridor Creeper 22, Funfair Wane 21 and Stormont 20.

The fact that the first three home last year came out of stalls 27, 29 and 28 respectively seemed to influence trainers but, as the choice edged towards the middle, Peter Makin bucked the trend when choosing the stands’ rail draw for Pivotal Point, who will attempt to emulate Jukebox (1970) and Soba (1982) by defying stall one.

However, Pivotal Point is a confirmed trailblazer, and there is no shortage of pace in the low numbers, with Raccoon (2), Material Witness (4), Smokin Beau (5), Two Step Kid (6) and Caribbean Coral (8).

Michael Magnusson only had 20th choice for former ante-post favourite Mutawaqed, so chose stall 14.

He said: ”If I had the choice I would have had 28, but, in the event, there was little left for us.

“Mutawaqed is not the quickest starter so it was never imperative to be over that side, and he did come from a long way back when he won at York, so perhaps all is not lost.”

Jeremy Noseda, who trains Two Step Kid (6), said: “I wanted to be high, but there were only seven balls left when our name came out, so we were a bit snookered.

“However, I am encouraged by the fact that there is plenty of pace on the stands’ side, and they tell me that Danetime, who was the last three-year-old to win the race, was drawn five, so we might yet get lucky.”

THIRD DAY, THURSDAY, JULY 29

CROWD UP

Rod Fabricius, Goodwood’s Clerk of the Course and Managing Director, said: “Today’s crowd of 22,101 was an increase of 835 on last year - that is 4% up.

“We shall be watering the last four furlongs of the straight tonight.”

Race One - Albert Handicap
Winner’s Quotes:

ARTISTIC DISPLAY FROM PETER PAUL REUBENS

Peter Paul Reubens, who, despite a 6lb penalty, was 7lb “well in” for the opening Albert Handicap, duly delivered under a stylish ride from Ryan Moore.

Whereas Kieren Fallon got shuffled back on the inside rail on 9-4 favourite Peeress, Moore broke smartly on Peter Paul Reubens (3-1) and gradually tacked his way across, putting the lid on the race early in the straight and galloping on strongly to hold 20-1 shot Compton’s Eleven by a length and a half. Peeress was a never dangerous third.

Winning trainer Paul Cole admitted that he will now have to look for some ‘black type’ races for Peter Paul Reubens, who had already been put up 13lb before this latest success.

Cole said: ”We always thought a lot of Peter Paul Reubens but, because of his size, we have had to be very patient.

“He was disappointing in his first two races, but they were on soft ground, and he might have been completing a four-timer had I not left him a bit short at Ascot.

“Goodwood’s seven furlongs can produce a very rough race, but Ryan rode a cool race and this horse has such a massive stride that when, he gets to the front, he takes a bit of passing.

“Ryan is a terrific young prospect. He does what you tell him, and he has the ability to go all the way.”

However, Cole has less encouraging news of last year’s Ascot Gold Cup winner Mr Dinos, who came back jarred up when trying for a repeat at last month’s Royal meeting.

Cole said: “Ascot finished him off for the season - the ground there is a disgrace, and they just cannot get the watering right. However, I feel confident that Mr Dinos will come back 100% next year.”

GROUND

After the first race, the following jockeys reported the ground as:

Jimmy Fortune, rider of Fancy Foxtrot, said: “Same as yesterday.”

Frankie Dettori, rider of Free Trip, said: “Firm.”

Kieren Fallon, rider of Peeress, said: “Same as yesterday.”

Frannie Norton, rider of Eccentric, said: “Good to firm.”

Johnny Murtagh, rider of Dvinsky, said: “Beautiful.”

Keith Dalgleish, rider of Parkview Love, said: “Good, fast ground.”

Pat Dobbs, rider of Mister Saif, said: “Good, fast ground.”

Ted Durcan, rider of Mahmoom, said: “Lively.”

Sam Hitchcott, rider of Compton’s Eleven, said: “Quick, fast ground.”

Michael Hills, rider of Desert Dreamer, said: “Good to firm.”

Jimmy Quinn, rider of Take A Bow, said: “Fast.”

Willie Ryan, rider of Invasian, said: “Fast.”

Richard Smith, rider of Corky, said: “Good to firm.”

Dane O’Neill, rider of Bettalatethannever, said: “Very quick.”

RACE 2 KING GEORGE STAKES
WIN QUOTES

RINGMOOR DOWN TAKES SPRINT

Ringmoor Down put in a fast time of 56.73 seconds to beat Boogie Street by a head in a tremendous finish to this Group 3 race, the Kinge George Stakes.

Winning trainer David Arbuthnot said: “This mare deserves that as she has been so unlucky and runs her heart out every time. It’s great when a small owner [Professor Christopher Green] has a filly who wins a Group race as it makes such a difference - it takes the pressure off for the future.

“I debated whether to come five furlongs down here as it’s a pretty swift five for a hold-up filly. I thought that the first two and a half furlongs might cost her but she travelled well. Quinny [winning jockey, Richard Quinn] said that she is improving all the time which she is.

“She was unlucky in the King’s Stand Stakes [at Royal Ascot] when fourth and I saw no reason why Majestic Missile should reverse that form - our mare has beaten all the opponents in this race before but saying that they had beaten her as well.

“She loves fast ground and at York last time, when she was fourth again, it was a bit soft and she didn’t get home over the six furlongs. Five furlongs with a fast pace and fast ground is perfect.

“I was more than confident three out that she would get a run - it was just whether she was good enough.”

The winning owner added: “I had real butterflies and I was helpless - this is the greatest day’s racing that I’ve had.”

Professor Christopher Green is a professor of geophysics working six weeks of the year at St Andrews University.

He worked for Shell and is retired living in Berkshire. “He is a great racing enthusiast and it is so good for a small owner to win a Group race when he has been involved so much in sellers and claimers,” commented Arbuthnot.

Race Two - King George Stakes
Placed Quotes:

BOOGIE STREET PIPPED ON POST

Richard Hannon shook his head in disbelief as the judge confirmed that Boogie Street, having led virtually from the start, had been beaten a head by the two years older Ringmoor Down in the Group 3 King George Stakes.

Hannon said: “Boogie Street would be the top three-year-old sprinter in the country, but there are just no three-year-old only races.

“He has run his heart out, but Jimmy (Fortune) felt that he was running into the whip and he wished he’d left it in the weighing room.”

Milton Bradley was justifiably proud of The Tatling, the winner 12 months ago but this time around third.

Bradley said: “We were giving the first two 12lb and 11lb respectively, and it will be a different story when we go to York for the Nunthorpe Stakes.

“It was always going to be tough under his penalty, but he might still have won had he not been checked at a crucial moment. We’ll go to York with all guns blazing.”

Third race - win quotes
Lady O Goodwood Cup

JOHNSTON LANDS FIFTH GOODWOOD CUP

Mark Johnston is as much a part of Goodwood as the famous Panama Hat, and the Middleham trainer landed the prestigious Lady O Goodwood Cup for the fifth time when Darasim, the 11-8 favourite, galloped his rivals into the ground in this Group Two showpiece.

And if the winner was not enough, then Johnston topped up the celebrations by also saddling runner-up Royal Rebel, who had won this race in 2000, and the fourth in Double Obsession.

Johnston, showered in congratulations and, of course, always associated with that great old stayer Double Trigger, who won the Goodwood Cup three times (1995, 1997 and 1998), said: “Markus Graff, Darasim’s owner, always loves a challenge, so if we got a fair weight we would have
to consider a trip to Australia for the Melbourne Cup.

“This horse is not the archetypal stayer - he is more the mile and six furlong to two mile horse, so he would be sharp enough for Flemington, but it all depends on the weight.

“If he went we would take him there fresh - we learned our lesson with Double Trigger a few years back.” Corals offer 20-1 and Paddy Power 25-1 about his Melbourne chance.

Joe Fanning made all and ground his rivals into submission on Darasim, and he dictated the race throughout.

He said: ”I gave him a breather at the top of the hill and kicked in the straight, but he really quickened from the two-furlong pole.”

Johnston confessed that had he been on Darasim’s back he would have wound up the pace earlier, but he conceded that Joe Fanning had timed the pace perfectly.

He added: “I knew that Darasim was the form horse - he has the perfect blend of speed and stamina. He was the justifiable favourite because he likes the track, and handles this type of ground. He was third in the Ascot Gold Cup this year and he might go for that race next June.

“Double Trigger and Darasim are very different horses. Double Trigger and Royal Rebel are out and out stayers while this horse is much sharper and speedier.

“I am delighted with Royal Rebel, who has run a fantastic race off a slow pace. We have been thinking of retiring him after next year’s Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot, but he looked better than ever out there, especially as this two miles is short of his best. Royal Rebel is an out-and-out stayer and will probably take in the Prix Cadran.”

Reflecting on a fabulous 1-2-4, Johnston concluded: “My son Charlie told me this morning that we would finish first, second and fourth, and he has been proved spot on.”

JOE FANNING WINS FIRST GOODWOOD CUP

Joe Fanning made all on Darasim to win his first Lady O Goodwood Cup.

The jockey commented: “I was happy enough throughout the race. I got a breather in at the top of the hill and quickened up from the three-pole.

“He has a good turn of foot for a staying type of horse - he extended when I asked him.

“Trips don’t seem to bother him, a mile and six and two miles. He always seems to run well at Goodwood, enjoying the twists and turns.”

RACE 3 LADY O GOODWOOD CUP
PLACE QUOTES

VISOR MAKES DIFFERENCE TO MISTERNANDO

Misternando, fitted with a visor for just the second time, finished third behind the Mark Johnston-trained pair of Darasim and Royal Rebel.

Mick Channon, trainer of Misternando, said: “I’m delighted with that effort - the visor helps him give himself a chance. Last time when he was third at Sandown, he threw it away at the bottom turn but he is a better horse in a visor and there is more to come.

“He’ll probably go for the Doncaster Cup as there are not many other races to go for.

“He’s a big baby and the young kid on the block [four-years-old] who is gradually making the step up to be a Cup horse - the first two are battle-hardened after all.

“He travelled sweeter throughout that race - that’s the point of the visor.”

Misternando’s jockey Sam Hitchcott added: “He’s run a blinder and coming down the hill I thought that he would take all of the beating - take nothing away from the two in front though.

“That’s only his second run in a visor and I would say there is a bit more improvement yet.”

RACE 4 LADBROKES.COM STAKES
WIN QUOTES

ART TRADER PREVAILS

Art Trader, described by many bookmakers’ representatives as the ‘best-backed horse of the day’, justified 7/2 favouritism by a length and a quarter from Fine Silver.

Winning trainer Amanda Perrett said: “Johnny [Murtagh, winning jockey] gave him a lovely ride and he’s a nice horse.

“The owners have been very patient and deserved this win as he was slowly away in the spring [only having had one previous outing this term].

“Mark [Perrett, husband] is not here today sadly but he and the team at home have done a great job.

“Plenty can go wrong in a race and two furlongs is quite a long time in front. When we missed Ascot, it was nice to come here and we can go home now and have the luxury of having a look at him.”

Race Four: ladbrokes.com Handicap
Placed Quotes:

“I WAS ROBBED” CLAIMS QUINN

Jimmy Quinn, third on Watamu behind Art Trader in the ladbrokes, com Handicap, has no doubt that he was robbed of first prize.

Quinn dismounted and apologised to trainer Peter Makin, declaring: “There is definitely a big handicap in Watamu.”

Explaining the problems he encountered, Quinn added: “I got shunted back early on in the race and, by the time I got a run, the first two had flown.

“My predicament began when the draw was made - we were crowded in on the rails from stall 14, and had I been drawn low I would definitely have won.”

Makin was philosophic about the defeat. He said: ”The plan was to be up there on the pace, but Jimmy had to rewrite the script after the first furlong. It’s just one of the those things and, while these valuable handicaps do now grow on trees, he does love this fast ground which gives us a chance.”

Paul Cole, who trains runner-up Fine Silver, said: “I nearly took him out because of the ground - he wants a bit of ease and, in the circumstances, he has run a blinder. His form is rock-solid.”

Race Five - EBF New Ham Maiden Fillies’ Stakes
Winner’s Quotes:

MISS L’AUGLEVAL ANOTHER WINNING FAVOURITE

Following the successes of Darasim and Art Trader, bookmakers were looking for “a result” in the EBF New Ham Maiden Fillies’ Stakes, but it was roars from the punters and groans from the layers as Miss L’Augleval, the 100-30 favourite, landed the money.

Less than a length covered the first five home, but it was Miss L’Augleval - named after the hotel where trainer Geoff Wragg stays for Deauville - who inched home by half a length. The judge was unable to split Love Affair and Kalmini, who dead-heated for second, with Miss Sharapova and Ellen’s Princess right on their heels.

Wragg said: “She did it slowly, but she got there in the end. She is all guts, and it looks as if she is already crying out for a mile.”

Richard Hannon, trainer of Love Affair, said: ”On a straight track, she would probably have won - she did not get the gaps and was squeezed out. I am delighted, especially as the other filly Ellen’s Princess (fifth) ran well, too.”

Mick Channon, who trains Kalmini, said: “She is solid and as tough as old boots - she’ll be alright and she’ll win a race.”

RACE 6 DE BOER EBF CLASSIFIED STAKES
WIN QUOTES

FLYING DISMOUNT FROM FRANKIE

Racegoers at Goodwood were treated to a flying dismount from popular Italian rider Frankie Dettori after he had steered Golden Sahara to a half length victory over top-weight Material Witness.

“There is a God!” exclaimed the jockey. “I had some cracking rides on the first two days but didn’t manage a winner and I came here today not expecting too much. This horse has been used as a pacemaker for our top horses and it was too soft for him at Salisbury last time, but he got me out of jail today.”

Winning trainer Saeed bin Suroor said: “He has run well and he loves this ground - he has run much better than last time. He has been improving in his work and I was confident of a good run. We’ll look for a better race but there is no decision at this time - he’ll be alright.”

Commenting on Refuse To Bend’s run in yesterday’s Cantor Odds Sussex Stakes, the trainer added: “It was disappointing but we’ll look for another Group One race - he’ll have a break until the next race. We will see how he comes back before deciding where he runs.”

Race Six - De Boeurs EBF Classified Stakes
Placed Quotes:

MATERIAL WITNESS TO RUN AGAIN ON SATURDAY
William Muir, pipped half a length with the trailblazing Material Witness by Golden Sahara in the de Boer EBF Classified Stakes, confirmed that his revitalised seven-year-old will be out again on Saturday, when Frankie Dettori replacing Martin Dwyer in the £100,000 Vodafone Stewards’ Cup.

Muir, who will also be represented by Texas Gold in the big sprint, joked: “That was only a prep-race for Saturday.

“Frankie told Martin to save a bit for the Stewards Cup! If he is OK in the morning, he will definitely take his chance.

“Coming back a furlong is not a problem. He is an unbelievable horse - he took on the best in his first two seasons and, having had a few problems, then ruined his chances by pulling in his races.

“But we decided to forget trying to settle him and let him bowl along in front, and it has been the making of the horse. He was so brave in front, and it has taken the big boys (Godolphin) to come and beat us. Maybe, we should ban them from handicaps!

“There is nothing between him and Texas Gold, and I have one drawn on each side, so we’ve got a real chance.

“My sister Grace is getting married on Saturday to former trainer Kevin Bell, but I’ll be at Goodwood. I can always celebrate with her when I get back - who knows it might be a double celebration!”

RYAN MOORE BANNED FOR A DAY

Ryan Moore was banned for a day for careless riding in the sixth race of the day, the De Boer EBF Classified Stakes.

His mount Moonlight Man, who was fourth, was found to have interfered with the third Boston Lodge inside the final furlong. The suspension is for Monday, August 9.

Race Seven - Valdoe Stakes
Winner’s Quotes:

LOCHBUIE TOPS UP WRAGG CELEBRATIONS

Geoff Wragg, successful earlier with Miss L’Augeval, completed an 18.5-1 double when winning the Valdoe Stakes with Lochbuie, one of three 7-2 co-favourites.

Lochbuie, who took a long time to get into top gear, made John Egan work hard for victory, eventually winning by three quarters a length and one and three-quarters from market-rivals Yoshka and Tungsten Strike.

Wragg, who plans “a nice celebration tonight before I head off to Nottingham tomorrow”, said: “Lochbuie is a tough ride, and John did very well.

“I was a bit worried how the horse would come down the hill, but they have a good job with the watering and I knew he would be alright when he got on the level ground.

“However, Yoshka gave us a fright. I thought he was going to get back at us, but our fellow is very game.”

Joe Mercer, racing manager to Saeed Buhaleeba, owner of Yoshka, told connections: “Don’t worry about that - he is a young, immature horse and he will improve.”

BOOKIES GROANING

Bookmakers might have triumphed on the opening day, but it has been very much the punters who have had the best of the arguments since, and, having taken another battering on Day Three, Neal Wilkins of Victor Chandler groaned: “I don’t know about Glorious Goodwood - this is turning into Bloodbath Badwood for the books!”

Wilkins added: “It has been a disastrous day. Peter Paul Reubens was a solid second-favourite at 100-30 and 3-1 in the opener, and, though we got a few quid back on Ringmoor Down (10-1) in the King George Stakes, in which there was a public plunge on Majestic Missile from 11-4 to 2-1, it was mainly misery from thereafter.

“Darasim, backed from 15-8 to 11-8, was backed to the exclusion of his rivals in the Lady O Goodwood Cup, and all the money was for Art Trader from 9-2 to 7-2 in the ladbrokes.com Handicap.

“And just as we were trying to pick ourselves off the floor, along came Miss L’Augeval, who was the one for money in the two-year-old race, being backed from 4-1 to 100-30 following a string of decent bets and the last race was bad too.”

NO EXPLANATION FOR HAAFHD’S POOR RUN

Angus Gold, racing manager to Hamdan Al Maktoum, spoke about Haafhd who disappointed when ninth in yesterday’s Group One Cantor Odds Sussex Stakes.

He said: “Haafhd pulled up sound and ate up last night so his run is a bit of a mystery.

“I have not yet spoken to Sheikh Hamdan but I would think we will give him a bit of time now. He has been disappointing after having such a good spring when he won the 2000 Guineas impressively.

“I still think he is a much better horse than we are seeing and, for whatever reason, he just does not seem to be firing at the moment.”

AHERN BANNED FOR TWO DAYS

The stewards today held an inquiry into Eddie Ahern’s use of the whip on yesterday’s winner of the Weatherbys Bank Fillies’Rated Stakes, Diamond Lodge.

They decided that the jockey had used his whip in an incorrect place. They suspended him on August 9 and 10.

GROUND GETTING QUICKER

With the sun shining on Goodwood from early morning, Seamus Buckley, clerk of the course on the Sussex track, has changed the ground to:

GOOD TO FIRM - GOOD in places.

However, Buckley stressed that he is delighted how well the ground has stood up to the first two days’ racing, reporting that he has received a very positive response from the jockeys.

Explaining the change in ground, Buckley said: “It has got quicker through the week, and the going stick which had a reading of 8.4 at the beginning of the week is now 9.5.

“We have watered the first quarter-mile of the straight course and will water the remainder after racing this evening, and we don’t anticipate the ground getting any faster than good to firm for the rest of the week and we will continue to water as and when necessary.”

Buckley confirmed that the far rail has been moved to provide fresh ground today for the final four furlongs and that the temporary rail on the lower bend will be removed after racing to provide new ground for the final two days, with similar action being taken on the top bend tomorrow evening so as to give a fresh strip for the Vodafone Nassau Stakes runners.

The official going yesterday was good, good to firm in places.

BETTING NEWS

Victor Chandler report money for the Amanda Perrett-trained Art Trader, who is a 9/2 chance with the Gibraltar-based firm from 6/1, in the ladbrokes.com Handicap (3.50pm).
