RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
SECOND DAY, WEDNESDAY, JULY 28

WILLIAM HILL MILE PREVIEW

A capacity field of 22 is set to line up in Friday’s £100,000 William Hill Mile at Goodwood. Frankie Dettori will be aboard the top weight, Godolphin’s handicap debutant Ancient World, as the same stable’s well-backed Zosima an absentee.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained filly Peeress has also been declared tomorrow and is unbeaten in three starts this season.

Uhoomagoo, who finished third at 33/1 in Saturday’s competitive Tote International Handicap at Ascot, makes a quick reappearance, as does El Coto, who beat only one horse home in the race while Wing Commander picks up a 5lb penalty for winning at Pontefract on Sunday.

Amandus had been banging on the door all season without winning while Battle Chant and Audience, who finished third and fourth behind Everest in a mile handicap at Newbury on July 17, reoppose as does Definite Guest, who was 15th, and Serieux who finished plum last.

Putra Kuantan has made no show twice since scoring at Sandown on May 31 while Pentecost was only beaten a length in Group 3 company on his latest run, having beaten the likes of Unshakable (3rd), Finished Article (10th) and Tuning Fork (15th) scoring at Sandown on his previous run.

Convent Girl beat only one home in the Royal Hunt Cup, Mystical Girl represents Mark Johnston’s Middleham yard that always excels at this meeting, as does that of David Nicholls, whose representative Sawwaah finished third in the ladies’ handicap at Ascot on Saturday.

William Haggas’ Flowerdrum has had a break of over a month since landing a Salisbury handicap on June 23 while the field is completed by ten-year-old Omaha City, who finished seventh in yesterday’s final race.

David Hood, spokesman for William Hill, said: “We’ve already had a result with the well-backed Zosima coming out, he had been supported from 12s into 4/1. But we got an indication that he was not going to run when we had recent support for stablemate Ancient World, who came in from 16/1 to 8/1. We have seen good money for a number of others including Battle Chant and Uhoomagoo.”

13-2 THE FIELD FOR THE WILLIAM HILL MILE

With ante-post favourite Zosima not declared at the 48-hour stage for Friday’s William Hill Mile, Godolphin now rely on Ancient World, who has been strongly supported in recent days to be the sponsor’s 13-2 co favourite.

Amanda Perrett's Battle Chant, also subject to a big price gamble, also shares the head of the market with original ante-post favourite Peeress.

Ancient World 13-2
Battle Chant 13-2
Peeress 13-2
Pentecost 10-1
Unshakable 11-1
Uhoomagoo 12-1
Amandus 14-1
Flowerdrum 14-1
Impeller 14-1
Wing Commander 14-1
Audience 16-1
El Coto 20-1
Putra Kuantan 20-1
Finished Article 25-1
Mystical Girl 25-1
Sawwaah 25-1
Dance On The Top 33-1
Definite Guest 33-1
Serieux 33-1
Convent Girl 40-1
Omaha City 40-1
Tuning Fork 50-1
Takes Tutu (reserve) 66-1

RICHMOND STAKES PREVIEW

Blue Dakota, unbeaten in four races, faces arguably his biggest test so far on Friday when he tackles six furlongs for the first time in the Group Two Richmond Stakes at Goodwood, where he has to give 3lb to all his seven rivals.

Jeremy Noseda had been toying with the idea of heading to France for the Prix Robert Papin or even running here on the opening day in the Betfair Molecomb Stakes, but, after much deliberation, the Newmarket trainer has opted to step up in distance with a colt, who has an explosive burst of early speed.

Strictly on the formbook, Blue Dakota will be pushed to confirm his Norfolk Stakes superiority over Mystical Land, who is 3lb better off for a neck from Ascot, and John Gosden, who trains the runner-up, stressed at the Royal Meeting that he would love to take on the winner again over six furlongs.

However, Noseda feels that Mystical Land, who was a bit squeezed for room when subsequently only third behind Captain Hurricane in the July Stakes at Newmarket, might have been flattered by getting so close to Blue Dakota at Ascot.

Noseda explained: ”Eddie (Ahern) got sucked into an early battle up front with Frankie (Dettori) and Skywards, and they did the first furlong in 11s and change, which is a suicidal pace.

“The last furlong was the slowest at the entire meeting, and I feel sure that Blue Dakota is better than that. He had a hard race, so we have freshened him up, and I have always felt that he would stay the six, especially on a fast track like Goodwood.”

Nevertheless, Mystical Land, whose trainer, John Gosden, who has won two of the last five runnings with Bachir and Endless Summer, rates Sheikh Mohammed’s colt highly and is expecting another big run.

Amazin’s second to Beckermet at Chester does not look so good after the winner had his limitations exposed in Tuesday’s Betfair Molecomb Stakes, but David Loder’s Stetchworth Prince, who clocked a fast time when making a winning debut at Newmarket’s July meeting, adds spice to a race in which the other runners are Super Sprint fourth Alpaga La Jomage, impressive Folkestone winner Montgomery’s Arch, Obe Gold, wjho found seven furlongs too far last time, and three-time winner Silver Wraith.

GOING NEWS

Goodwood’s Raceday Clerk of the Course, Seamus Buckley, has kept the official going as Good, Good To Firm in places, overnight but admitted that the drying conditions could see a change tomorrow(Thursday)

“I was delighted with the way the course rode today although admittedly it is starting to dry up,” said Buckley.

“We will water the first two furlongs of the straight - from the six to four-furlong markers - either tonight or early in the morning. We’ll water the remainder of the straight tomorrow evening after racing.

“The final four furlongs tomorrow include a fresh strip of ground that hasn’t been used for two months and has retained more moisture than the rest of the course because it has not been opened up with racing.

“The plan is to remove the running rail around the lower bend tomorrow evening so there is fresh ground for Friday and Saturday.

“I have kept the going as Good, Good to Firm in places, but with a dry night it may Good to Firm, Good in places, tomorrow.”

CROWD UP

The crowd on day two of Glorious Goodwood (Wednesday,July 28) was 20,191, up 262 (1%), on the figure for 2003.

FABRICIUS “PLEASED” WITH FIRST DAY

Rod Fabricius, managing director at Goodwood, is looking to today’s Cantor Odds Sussex Stakes to launch a successful association with the new online bookmakers.

Fabricius said: “We are very grateful to Cantor Index, who have signed a three-year agreement for what is one of the great championship mile races in Europe, and, with Haafhd, the 2000 Guineas winner, being taken on by two recent older Group 1 winners in Refuse To Bend (Eclipse) and Soviet Song (Falmouth Stakes), the first running under the Cantor sponsorship promises to be a real cracker.”

Reflecting on a first-day yesterday, which featured a string of surprise results, Fabricius expressed himself “very pleased” with the overall crowd of 17,500, which included annual members, owners, trainers and other complimentaries and which was 2% up on last year.

Fabricius said: “It was a splendid day’s racing, and the Tuesday programme is now light years ahead of what it used to be.

“In the old days the Stewards’ Cup always highlighted the opening day, and switching it to Saturday knocked seven bells out of the Tuesday, but, while the ABN Amro (Gordon Stakes) is a good race in its own right, we have worked hard on ensuring that there is a solid supporting programme with which to launch the meeting.”

Race One - Goodwood Stakes (Handicap)
Winner’s Quotes

IT’S THAT MAN HANAGAN AGAIN

Goodwood is fast becoming one of Paul Hanagan’s favourite courses, and he was the toast of Malton after winning the opening Goodwood Stakes for Richard Fahey on 11-2 chance Alrida, who was clocking up his first success on the Flat for two years but has clearly been revitalised by a spell of hurdling.

Hanagan, who enjoyed one of his biggest winners when landing last year’s William Hill Mile for Fahey on Lady Bear, kept Alrida going strongly to repel the challenge of Stance and score by a neck.

Fahey was absent, but Hanagan, who has only recently returned from a hefty 18-day suspension, imposed for being found guilty of not riding from his proper draw for the sixth time, was delighted with Alrida, who won a handicap hurdle at Market Rasen just 11 days ago.

Hanagan said: “Alrida must have thought he was running loose with only 7st 12lb on his back, but he quickened up well and really stuck his neck out and battled when the other horse got to him.

“During my enforced holiday I went home to Ireland for a break, and I have come back more relaxed and I am rarin’ to get going again. I rode out a few times to keep my fitness.”

FIRST RACE PLACED QUOTES
THE GOODWOOD STAKES (HANDICAP)

STANCE TO GO JUMPING

The Gary Moore-trained Stance, ridden by the trainer’s son Ryan, failed by a neck to foil Alrida in the opening marathon Goodwood Stakes (Handicap) and his next outing is likely to be over hurdles.

“He has run a great race, it would just have been nice to have won,” lamented Moore. “We’d targeted this race since Royal Ascot so it would have been good to have come home in front but he’ll have a break now and then go jumping.”

GROUND

Jockeys riding in the first generally considered the ground to be good.

Lisa Jones, Chris Catlin and Jimmy Quinn all described the racing surface as “good” while Darryll Holland reported it to be “a little quicker than yesterday.”

SECOND RACE WINNING QUOTES
VEUVE CLIQUOT VINTAGE STAKES (GROUP 2)

SHAMARDAL 10/1 FOR GUINEAS

The Mark Johnston-trained Shamardal is as short as 10/1 with William Hill for next year’s 2000 Guineas after running away with the Group Two Veuve Clicquot Stakes by two and a half lengths.

Johnston, who won the race with Lucky Story 12 months ago and subsequent Guineas winner Mister Baileys in 1993, reported: “There is not an awful lot to go on but on what we’ve done so far, he’s the best two-year-old we’ve got. He’s only three gallops at home and two on the racecourse. He’s similar at least to last year’s winner.

“I feel a bit sorry for Keith Dalgleish, who rode him in his last gallop before he won his maiden and Keith said it wasn’t a question of whether he’d win, more where would I like him to win.

“Joe (Fanning) said that he has not ridden a horse that has won as easily as this. He has not sat on one that’s quickened so effectively.

“He cost a fortune as a foal but as a yearling I bid 45,000gns when I saw that I was bidding against Michael Goodbody (stud manager for owner Abdulla BuHaleeba), so I stopped bidding at and got sent the horse. We could have probably got him for even less.

“He’s a big soft horse that can only improve and I really haven’t thought about where he will go now but we might just take the jump to a Group One now.

“He is a versatile type with easily the speed for six furlongs.”

Race Two - Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes
Place Quotes

WILKO SHERGAR CUP BOUND

Jeremy Noseda admitted that Wilko had “bumped into one” after his consistent colt had been soundly trounced by two and a half lengths in the Group Two Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes.

The trainer said: ”Wilko is a solid Group 3 horse, and he has been beaten by a real good one out there.

“My horse tries his heart out, and perhaps now is the type to drop him down a grade, so we might run him at the Shergar Cup meeting at Ascot next month.

“It would do him good to get his head back in front and would act as a confidence-restorer, but he has never done anything wrong and he loves this fast ground.”

Race Three - Cantor Odds Sussex Stakes
Winner’s Quotes

SOVIET SONG IS QUEEN OF EUROPE

Everyone loves a lady, and Soviet Song, the only filly in the field, hammered the colts with a superb performance to win the Cantor Odds Sussex Stakes.

2,000 Guineas winner Haafhd or Eclipse hero Refuse To Bend finished ninth and 11th, and Soviet Song, the first of her sex to take this prestigious prize since Sayyedati nine years ago, battled on like a lioness from the furlong-pole to repel the challenge of Nayyir by a neck and provide James Fanshawe and Johnny Murtagh with their third Group One celebration this month.

Fanshawe said: ”Soviet Song is a very special filly - some people were bemused as to how she came to beat Attraction in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket last time, but now that she has put the colts in their place perhaps they’ll start believing in her.”

The popularity of Soviet Song, whose 17,000 owners of the Elite Racing Club were celebrating their 200th winner, can be illustrated by the huge round of applause which greeted the filly both as she returned to the winner’s enclosure and again when she was walked back to the stables.

Fanshawe added: “That is her sixth race this year but she is hard as nails and, unlike last year, she is taking her races so well.

“She is a Group One winner at two and now she has won two races at the top level at four, and the good news is that Elite are even thinking of keeping her in training next year.

“I purposely did not enter her this morning for the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville, because it comes only 19 days after this and I didn’t want to be tempted.

“Instead, we will probably aim for the Group One Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on September 11 before having another crack at the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot. That is a race I really wanted to win - she wasn’t right when she ran in it last year.”

A change in tactics since they were beaten by Refuse To Bend in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot has worked the oracle for Soviet Song, who is now held up that much longer.

Murtagh said: “She is the Queen of the milers. I kicked her in the belly two furlongs out and she took over and, though Mick Kinane chased me hard on Nayyir all the way to the line my filly just would not be denied.

“She is up there with the best milers I have ridden, but she knows she is good. She walks around as if she owns the place and has so much presence.”

REFUSE TO BEND AND HAAFHD DISAPPOINT

The 11/4 favourite Refuse To Bend and another of the market leaders, Haafhd, ran disappointingly in the Cantor Odds Sussex Stakes.

Refuse To Bend, going for a third consecutive Group One victory, finished last of the 11 runners.

His jockey Frankie Dettori commented: “Things didn’t work out. Unfortunately, I jumped him out to get a good position and he ran too free and he didn’t finish. I was expecting Passing Glance to give us a good lead but he never got there until after two furlongs.

”My horse ran too free and I couldn’t get him to switch off - he ran out of gas. Nevertheless, he has won two Group Ones this year and I am sure he will run some other good races.”

As Refuse to Bend weakened on the far rail, he was bumped into.

Dettori added: “It was a good job the rails are made of plastic because they moved about a yard - the field was coming across and tired horses were running around and actually we were very lucky to stand up.”

Haafhd, who spread a plate at the start where he was replated, came home ninth and his rider Richard Hills could not explain the poor run.

The jockey said: “That was disappointing - he was travelling all right - I don’t know what happened.”

THIRD RACE PLACED QUOTES
CANTOR ODDS SUSSEX STAKES (GROUP 1)

NO EXCUSES FOR NAYYIR

Trainer Gerard Butler had no excuses after Nayyir came a fast-finishing second to Soviet Song in the feature Group 1 Cantor Odds Sussex Stakes under Mick Kinane.

“Mick said that he met a bit of interference but no more than you’d expect in a Group 1 so we have no excuses. I think we’ve finished second in a very good race,” said Butler.

“He did a fantastic piece of work the other Sunday and we knew we had him back to his best. He loves this place and will probably come back for the Celebration Mile in August then possibly head for something like the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot.”

Last year’s Italian 2,000 Guineas winner Le Vie Dei Colori put in a sparkling first effort for his new trainer Luca Cumani when finishing third.

“I think there is improvement in this horse and if he comes out of this OK then we’ll go for the Celebration Mile,” declared Cumani

FOURTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
CANTORODDS.COM STAKES (HERITAGE HANDICAP)

CREW CUTS DOWN RIVALS

Cutting Crew, trained and bred by Peter Harris and owned by his wife Caryl, held off the challenge of Larkwing to take the cantorodds.com Stakes by three-quarters of a length under Darryll Holland.

“I bred him, his dam and grand-dam,” said Harris. “His mother Poppy Carew was an awkward customer but a very good filly.

“This one is very genuine and I was hopeful today because last time he ran very well but just got run out of it and the horse that beat him came out and won last night.

“There’s no real plan for him - I didn’t put him in the Ebor because I felt he was just a bit too exposed for tha race.”

Holland added: “He’s a horse with a lovely long stride but it’s not easy to front run here as you have to give them a breather at the right time. I let him freewheel down the hill and didn’t ask for an effort until the two marker.”

Race Four - cantorodds.com Heritage Handicap
Placed Quotes:

LARKWING ONE FOR THE FUTURE

The best is yet to come from Larkwing, runner-up behind Cutting Crew in the cantorodds.com Heritage Handicap, and both Geoff Wragg and his jockey Franny Norton were delighted with the effort of the 20-1 chance, who was closing fast all the way to the line but was beaten three parts of a length.

Norton enthused: “That was only Larkwing’s fifth race and he is still a big baby. He will get better and better.”

Those sentiments were echoed by Wragg, who said: “He ducked in a couple of times up the straight, but he certainly finished to some effect and has run a blinder.

“The way he was finishing you would think he will stay a bit further than this mile and a half, and, hopefully, the handicapper will not be too harsh on him. He is a nice horse and is still improving.”

Race Five - Weatherbys Bank Fillies’ Rated Stakes
Winner’s Quotes

NOSEDA OPENS HIS SCORE

Jeremy Noseda saddled his first winner at Glorious Goodwood when Diamond Lodge held on bravely by half a length from Wee Dinns in the Weatherbys Bank Fillies’ Rated Stakes.

Noseda, who has big hopes for Blue Dakota in the Richmond Stakes on Friday and also for Two Step Kid in the Vodafone Stewards’ Cup 24 hours later, said: “It’s nice to open my score here, but I don’t have too many runners, so it’s hardly an earth-shattering statistic.”

Praising Diamond Lodge, who was unraced at two but has more than made up for lost time, winning three of her previous six races this season, Noseda added: “She is a good tough filly and keeps on progressing, but if she climbs the handicap again we might have to look for something better.

“I am delighted for Colin and Jan Harris - this is their first ever horse and I bought her at the Breeze-Up Sale. That’s what you call beginner’s luck.”

Race Six - Findon Maiden Fillies’ Stakes
Placed Quotes:

CHAPPLE-HYAM STILL HAS FAITH

Rumour was rife that Clear Impression was Peter Chapple-Hyam’s best two-year-old filly before the Findon Maiden Stakes, but the 7-4 favourite came up against another newcomer who was too good in Suez.

However, Chapple Hyam, observing that the time was fast and that the first two had pulled four lengths clear of the rest, has certainly not lost faith in Clear Impression.

He said: “She is my best filly, though I only have five. I still have some good colts to run.”

Elaborating on Clear Impression’s promise, he added: “Her dam, Shining Hour, won the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot, but I think this one will prove better in time.

“We will look for a maiden, but I am not giving up yet and I still like her a lot.” So do Paddy Power, who left their pre-race quote of 33-1 for next year’s 1000 Guineas unchanged.

John Hills felt that his third-placed Toffee Vodka had been beaten by two exceptional fillies.

He said: “She got a bump coming out of the stalls, which cost her both ground and momentum. So to finish as close as she did from a standing start is no mean achievement as this will probably prove a hot race.”

SIXTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
FINDON MAIDEN FILLIES’ STAKES

SUEZ MAKES IMPRESSIVE DEBUT

Suez, a 480,000gns yearling purchase by Sheikh Mohammed, made a sparkling racecourse debut when winning the Findon Maiden Fillies’ Stakes by an easy two and a half lengths from the well-regarded Clear Impression.

The winner earned a quote of 25/1 with Ladbrokes for next year’s 1000 Guineas but trainer Michael Jarvis is not dreaming of classics yet.

“She has been showing a lot at home but our two-year-olds have only just started to come to themselves so I was not over confident,” said Jarvis.

“She has always been very good and Philip (Robinson) said she was a little bit green but really picked up.

“She’d have to run in something like the Lowther before we start talking about the Guineas. I will talk to Sheikh Mohammed before deciding if she goes for the Lowther, he has a lot of other good fillies.”

Jarvis feels Anak Pekan has a chance in an open Lady O Goodwood Cup tomorrow. “The ground is a bit quicker than ideal for him and he is a top handicapper taking a big step up, but this does look a pretty weak division of the race.”

Race Seven - Zuhair Handicap
Winner’s Quotes:

CONFUSION REIGNS AFTER FINALE

Before the 22-runner Zuhair Handicap, the general concensus of opinion was that you needed to be drawn high on the sprint course, but those punters seeking a few clues for Saturday’s Vodafone Stewards’ Cup learned little from this finale, with the first three home - Double M (28-1) Time To Appendix (25-1) and Lady Protector (25-1) - all coming up the stands’ side.

“That might confuse the situation for Saturday, but I’d much rather it be that way than a one-sided bias,” said clerk of the course Rod Fabricius, who will be present to make the draw for the traditional cavalry charge at noon tomorrow.

The first three emerged from stalls 10, 6 and 11 respectively, and Lydia Richards, who trains Double M, admitted that she was “very concerned” about the draw beforehand.

“I had a long chat with Richard Thomas in the paddock and when he left me we had agreed to go the far side, so I was as surprised as anyone to see him come up this side.

“However, he tells me that when he got down to the start he felt that it would be stupid to go over that side as he wanted to be where the pace is, and it has all worked out beautifully.

“Things have to go right for Double M, who needs to be covered up, but that is the fourth race he has won for us this season, so I can’t complain, and Richard, who is celebrating his first Glorious Goodwood winner, seems to have found the key with the old horse.”

Not that many punters were queuing at the pay windows afterwards, and the Tote Exacta paid £925.40 for a £1 stake.

GOING NEWS AT 10AM

The going is

GOOD, GOOD TO FIRM IN PLACES

on the whole course.

Seamus Buckley, Goodwood’s Raceday Clerk of the Course, said: “The course has dried out a little bit overnight and I have changed the going to Good, Good To Firm in places. The going stick reading is 8.7, which is three points faster than yesterday

“We watered part of the round course last night but not up the straight, where there is sufficient moisture in the ground.

“A decision will be taken after racing whether we water again this evening - there is a possibility of a shower tomorrow night.

“The false rail in the straight will be taken down after racing tonight from the four-furlong marker to the winning post to provide a fresh strip of ground that has not been raced on for two months.”

The going yesterday was Good on the straight course, Good, good to firm in places on the round course.

SAND TRIBUTE TO PERSIAN PUNCH

Persian Punch, winner of the Goodwood Cup in 2001 and 2003, is remembered at Goodwood this week by an innovative sculpture made up of 10 tons of sand.

Andrew Baynes, who has been building sand sculptures for more than 18 years, has been commissioned to undertake the task at a site close to the Richmond Enclosure entrance.

“I have done a lot of horses before but not many racehorses,” said Baynes, whose task will last the full five days of Glorious Goodwood. “Part of the process of my sculpting is interacting with racegoers and I have had a lot of people come up taking a real interest in what I’m doing.”

Persian Punch was one of the most popular horses in training and sadly died of a heart attack when racing at Ascot in April. The horse’s ashes will be scattered over the course at Goodwood at a future date.

“I have studied a lot of pictures of Persian Punch and am producing a full-size sculpture of the horse kneeling,” added Baynes. “It should be basically finished on Friday and then I will just add in the fine detail on Saturday.”

Baynes’s sculptures are made of fine sand and water and have entertained and interacted with thousands of people each year at arts festivals, large-scale events, galleries, film and product launches.

BETTING NEWS

Luca Cumani saved the day for many punters yesterday when Darryll Holland escaped from a pocket to win on 7-2 favourite Mephisto, and there are plenty relying on the same firm’s Italian recruit Le Vie Dei Colori turning over a weak favourite in Refuse To Bend in today’s feature race, the Group One Cantor Odds Sussex Stakes.

Le Vie Dei Colori, who won 12 of his 15 races in Italy, is having his first run for Cumani, but, having been featured on one of the major tipping lines, has been cut to 10-1 from 16-1 with Victor Chandler, Ladbrokes, Corals, Hills, Paddy Power and Skybet.

The sponsors, Cantor Odds, have also seen money for the Cumani horse and now go 10/1, with Refuse To Ben weakening to be 5-2 joint favourite with Soviet Sonng (in from 11-4). Cantor Odds, who are offering a 10% extra win bonus, have also clipped Passing Glance to 20/1 drom 25/1.

Inevitably, Mark Johnston’s Always Waining, the Pricewise selection in The Racing Post, has been trimmed for the cantorodds.com Heritage Handicap and is now 4-1 from 5-1 and 9-2 with the sponsors and Victor Chandler respectively. The latter, fearing victory for stablemate Shamardal in the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes, have fallen into line with other firms as far as his price for next year’s 2,000 Guineas is concerned and now offered at 16-1 from 25-1.

Punters seem to think that this might be Johnston’s day, as Paddy Power have also seen plenty of money for Etmaam against his fellow Kingsley House inmate in the cantorodds.com Heritage Handicap, and the unlucky Royal Ascot third has been shaved a point to 9-2 with the Irish firm.

Always Waining has proved the best backed horse of the day with Corals, who were top offer this morning at 5-1 but have been forced to reduce their odds to 7-2, following sustained support, a move mirrored at Ladbrokes, who now offer 4-1, and Hills, who have slashed their price to 3-1 from 9-2 but also report good money for Always First and have halved his odds to 7-1.

Wilko is the one being backed against Shamardal for the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes and has been cut to 9-1 from 6-1 with Skybet, who report money in the finale - the Zuhair Handicap - for topweight Devise, who is down to 12-1 from 18-1.
