GLORIOUS GOODWOOD 2004
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
FIRST DAY, TUESDAY, JULY 27

ALL SET FOR A GLORIOUS WEEK

Goodwood’s Clerk of the Course and Managing Director Rod Fabricius is very much looking forward to the next five days at the world’s most beautiful racecourse.

He said: “We’re looking to having some great racing here at Goodwood. I think the racing programme is particularly strong, the mix of races seems to be panning out well.

“Today’s card is very strong with the Betfair Cup taking the Group Two Lennox Stakes to an even higher level than we have experienced in recent years and equally I would be very pleased with the five-furlong Group Three race, the Betfair Molecomb Stakes, and a couple of competitive handicaps go with them.

“The outlook for the week, obviously the weather is very important to us, but the forecast seems to be reasonably kind. I’m pleased to say that the course is in really good condition - we’ve watered very intensively, putting on over an inch and a quarter on across the entire course in the last week and indeed certain parts of the course have taken even more watering than that.

“Obviously, the Cantor Odds partnership through Cantor Index is very important to us. It’s the start of a three-year association and they are involved with us not only for horseracing but for motorsport as a major sponsor of the Revival Meeting.

“We’re delighted to welcome Cantor Odds backing the Sussex Stakes and cantorodds.com Handicap and we’re obviously pleased that Betfair are a more significant sponsor with us this year - they did sponsor a couple of years ago with us but they are coming back big time. Sterling Insurance is another sponsor that is new to this Festival Meeting and is associated with the Normandie Stud Lupe Stakes sponsorship at our May Meeting.

“So all in all sponsorship is up on last year and, with our prize money also up on last year, the owners and trainers should be pleased with the opportunity to pick up good prize money.

“The use of temporary rail on the course is important - we take the temporary rail down the straight down after racing on Wednesday. There is a temporary rail on the lower bend as well as the top bend. The top bend probably may not come down until after racing on Friday whereas the lower bend may well come down after racing on Thursday.

“So we will have some new ground introduced as we go through the week and, given that we are going to see some large fields and plenty of runners, it is very important that we can share the wear and tear.

“The military bands are playing each day - we’ve got street entertainment, circus performers and stilt walkers each day amusing racegoers and we have the Sand Sculpture in the Richmond Enclosure which should be fascinating.”

EMOTIONAL RESULT IN PROSPECT

Should Romany Prince prevail in the Lady O Goodwood Cup, there will not be a dry eye on the course. For the five-year-old represents the same connections as the late, and much lamented, dual winner of the stayers’ Group 2 contest, Persian Punch, owner Jeff Smith and trainer David Elsworth. Persian Punch, such a loss to the racing scene when he died in action at Ascot in April, won the Goodwood race last year and in 2001.

Romany Prince, who passed the post first in a Listed race at Sandown earlier this month but was subsequently demoted for causing interference to the runner-up Silver Gilt. The pair are among nine declared for Thursday’s two-mile event.

Mark Johnston has won the Goodwood marathon four times, courtesy of Double Trigger thrice (1995, 1997, 1998) and Royal Rebel in 2000 and will be three-handed this week. Royal Rebel is set to represent the Middleham trainer, alongside stablemates Darasim and Double Obsession.

After his Goodwood success, Royal Rebel went on to win the 2001 and 2002 Ascot Gold Cups and finished fourth to Papineau in this year’s renewal. Darasim was one place in front of him on that occasion, his latest start, and Double Obsession won at the Royal meeting, taking the Ascot Stakes by five lengths from Promoter.

Sir Michael Stoute has not won the Goodwood feature since Lester Piggott brought home Girandole by two lengths in 1975. He is represented this year by Supremacy, who stayed on well to take a Listed race at Ascot last September.

The Brian Meehan-trained Hilbre Island has not got his head in front in four starts this term, but he too won at Listed level last year, by three lengths at Newmarket.

Anak Pekan, trained by Michael Jarvis, suffered his first reversal in three outings this season on his last run when third in the Northumberland Plate, having earlier taken both the Queen’s Prize at Kempton and the Chester Cup.

The field is completed by Mick Channon’s charge Misternando, who went down by five lengths when runner-up in the Chester Cup and was a five-length third to Silver Gilt and Romany Prince last time out.

GREAT CANTOR ODDS SUSSEX STAKES IN PROSPECT

At yesterday's final 48-hour declaration stage, 11 horses were declared for tomorrow’s £300,000 Cantor Odds Sussex Stakes at Goodwood, with a superb race in prospect.

The only withdrawals from the Group One race, one of Europe’s top mile events, were two three-year-olds, Brunel and Kheleyf. The latter runs instead in the Group Two Betfair Cup at Goodwood today.

Heading the challenge from the older generation is Godolphin's Refuse To Bend, victorious in two Group One contests already this season - the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown Park. As a three-year-old, he also landed the Group One 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Refuse To Bend is the 9/4 favourite with the sponsors, Cantor Odds, who then go 5/2 Soviet Song, 11/4 Haafhd, 9/1 Antonius Pius, 12/1 Nayyir, 16/1 Le Vie Dei Colori, 20/1 Tillerman, 25/1 Norse Dancer & Passing Glance, 33/1 Hurricane Alan and 40/1 Checkit.

Graham Cowdrey , Head of Public Relations Cantor Odds, said: “ We have cut Antonius Pius from 12/1 to 9/1 as he ran a great race at Royal Ascot on very firm ground in the St James’ Palace Stakes. Jamie Spencer has always thought very highly of this colt and his return to a mile after disappointing in the July Cup could be the key. I can see him shortening again before the race due to positive vibes from over the Irish Sea.”

Trainer Saeed bin Suroor revealed: “Refuse To Bend is in good form and he came back well from his run in the Coral-Eclipse. He's ready to run again on Wednesday.”

Soviet Song chased home Refuse To Bend in the Queen Anne Stakes before becoming the first to beat Attraction, doing so in the Group One Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket earlier this month and is set to take on the Godolphin colt again.

The challenge from the three-year-olds is headed by Haafhd, the winner of the season's first classic, the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, and fourth to Azamour in the Group One St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 15.

He will be joined by Antonius Pius, third home in the St James's Palace Stakes - a head in front of Haafhd - after an unlucky run in the French 2,000 Guineas at Longchamp, where he hit the rail in the final furlong after looking assured of victory. Antonius Pius found six furlongs too sharp in the Group One Darley July Cup at Newmarket last time out.

Also in the field are Nayyir, trained by Gerard Butler, who has been victorious in the seven-furlong Group Two Betfair Cup at Goodwood for the past two years over seven furlongs and Norse Dancer, who has run some excellent races in defeat in Group One company, including when third in last season's Cantor Odds Sussex Stakes. Le Vie Dei Colori represents the Luca Cumani stable and was the winner of the Group One Premio Vittorio di Capua (the Italian 2,000 Guineas) at San Siro, Italy, in October while Passing Glance failed by just a head in the Group Two Celebration Mile at Goodwood last year.

Tillerman won the Celebration Mile in 2002 and was third in that same contest last year. The remaining two representatives from the older generation are Checkit from the Mick Channon yard and Hurricane Alan, winner of the Group Two Betfred Mile at Sandown earlier this season and from the stable of Richard Hannon - successful in 2003 with Reel Buddy.

Rod Fabricius, Goodwood’s Managing Director, commented: “We are delighted with the quality and number of horses taking part in the Cantor Odds Sussex Stakes, the feature race of the Festival Meeting.”

MAXIMUM FIELD FOR THE cantorodds.com HANDICAP
Given looking forward to seeing Protective take his chance

A maximum field of 16 is set to go to post for tomorrow's £85,000 cantorodds.com Handicap over a mile and a half at Goodwood.

James Given runs the lightly-raced Protective, who was the five-length winner of a 12-furlong maiden at Haydock in early June, before returning to the same course and distance for a Listed race on July 17, when a creditable fourth behind St Leger hopeful Frank Sonata.

The Lincolnshire-based trainer revealed : “Protective has come out of Haydock very well indeed. He won his maiden on soft ground [officially good to soft] at Haydock but we have galloped him once on quick turf at home and he went very well on it. He's got quite a round action which is why we have been trying to look for softish ground, which he clearly acted on very well in both Haydock races.

“Last time he beat Red Lancer and Lord Mayor who are both rated over 100 and it was arguably a strange race with the handicapper not quite knowing what to make of it. The front three pulled well clear but I think they're all heading towards the St Leger anyway and I was very pleased with Protective's fourth.

“I wouldn't want to be running him on firm ground with the type of action that he has but I'm very interested and excited and looking forward to the cantorodds.com Handicap on Wednesday.”

Despite Protective winning his maiden at 50/1, the three-year-old's victory was not a huge surprise to his handler.

“It wasn't a great surprise actually although our stable was going through a bit of a cold period - it's been a bit of a funny season for many yards this year and it's been difficult to be too confident,” explained Given.

“But I thought that Protective was a huge price - we're not a gambling yard and the owners aren't gamblers and hence the prices stay where they are but for anyone who had asked me, I would have said I thought that he was a very good each-way bet because he's such a big price and I felt that he was an improving horse.”

Heading the field tomorrow is Red Lancer, winner of the Group Three Chester Vase at Chester earlier this season, who will cross swords again with Protective.

Sir Michael Stoute, who sent out the great Pilsudski to win this race in 1995, is represented by Always First, second to the progressive Mister Monet at Hamilton last time, and Admiral, who was last seen out when taking the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot for a Highclere Thoroughbred Racing syndicate.

Middleham handler Mark Johnston, leading trainer at Glorious Goodwood for four of the past six seasons, runs both Always Waining and Fort, who finished first and second respectively in the Diamond Rated Stakes over a mile and a half at Ascot on Saturday. Fort also runs for a Highclere Thoroughbred Racing syndicate. In addition, Johnston has Etmaam, who looked a little unlucky when third to Admiral in the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot.

Other interesting contenders include the Luca Cumani-trained Zeitgeist, an eye-catching fifth at Ascot last time in a handicap on July 9, David Elsworth's Stage Right, an impressive winner on his latest start in a maiden at Goodwood, and Larkwing from the Geoff Wragg stable, who was seen out when taking a maiden at Newmarket at Goodwood in good style back in May.

FIRST DAY, TUESDAY, JULY 27

CROWD UP

Goodwood’s Clerk of the Course and Managing Director Rod Fabricius reported today’s crowd to be: “About 15,000 which is an increase of 2% on last year. I’m quite pleased with that and the crowd in the Richmond Enclosure was up 7%, the crowd in the Gordon Enclosure was down 7%, and the crowd in the Public Enclosure was up 2%.

“The racing has gone well and there have been no incidents on course. There have been no complaints about the ground and we will be watering overnight selectively. The temporary rail up the straight will be taken down after racing tomorrow.”

Race One - Sterling Insurance Summer Handicap

QUICK-THINKING SANDERS ADOPTS PLAN B

Coat Of Honour took the Sterling Insurance Summer Handicap despite the way the race was run, rather than because of it.

The grey four-year-old gelding overcame a slow pace and the handicap of being in front too soon to score by a neck, but rider Seb Sanders put the wavering passage through the closing stages down to inexperience, not any ungenuine tendencies.

“He had always done his winning in blinkers before,” he said, “but today the boss dropped them off.

“Last time he ran, first time out this season at York, he got himself all upset on the walk across the course. It was disappointing the way he ran that day but this time he was much more relaxed, more professional.”

The race did not unfold as Sanders expected. “There wasn’t much of a gallop early so after he jumped well I had to sit second. In an ideal world, he’d like a lead longer, he’d prefer to run at horses. But in that sort of race at that sort of gallop, you have to make the best of it.

“It was the first time he’d been in front without blinkers and it was just like riding a two-year-old. He’s not ungenuine, just felt green. But he had the ability to overcome it. He picked up once the other horse came to him”

Trainer Sir Mark Prescott, speaking from his Heath House Stables in Newmarket, said: “He was rather on edge at York, which was uncharacteristic of him because he is the most placid of animals. So I left the blinkers off for no more intelligent reason than it was something different.

“Seb went rather earlier than we’d discussed and the horse became rather lost in front on his own. But all’s well that ended well.”

GROUND

After today’s opening contest, the Sterling Insurance Summer Stakes, the following jockeys described the ground as:

Kieren Fallon, rider of Blythe Knight, said: “Good.”

Darryll Holland, rider of Windy Britain, said: “Beautiful.”

Frankie Dettori, rider of Fantastic Love, said: “Good To Firm.”

Jimmy Fortune, rider of Chinkara, said: “Good To Firm.”

Nicky Mackay, rider of Prairie Wolf, said: “Good ground - perfect.”

Seb Sanders, rider of winner Coat Of Honour, said: “Good fast ground.”

Gary Carter, rider of Krugerrand, said: “Good.”

Michael Fenton, rider of Telemachus, said: “Good, quick ground.”

Steve Drowne, rider of runner-up Impeller, said: “A shade on the fast side.”

Ryan Moore, rider of Alrafid, said: “Good To Firm.”

RACE TWO THE GROUP 3 ABN AMRO STAKES
WIN QUOTES

ST LEGER FOR MARAAHEL?

Maraahel made a successful transition from handicap company to Pattern class winning the Group Three ABN Amro Stakes by one and half lengths from Go For Gold.

Winning rider Richard Hills said: “He’s a very nice horse with a fantastic attitude. He was always travelling like the winner and he quickened off a nice pace which is important - I think that he’ll go on any ground.”

Angus Gold, racing manager of winning owner Hamdan Al Maktoum, said: “Yes the St Leger is the obvious target but it will depend on whether the trainer [Sir Michael Stoute] thinks that he’ll stay.

“Richard [Hills] said that he’s such a relaxed horse with a great attitude and he’s been unlucky in both his runs this season. He’s done nothing but improve and the further that he has gone the better he’s got. He’s a staying horse but he has a turn of foot.

“There is not an awful lot of stamina on the dam’s side [Nasanice] but he relaxes so well that he would give himself a chance of staying in the St Leger. Sir Michael might say that he won’t stay but the look on the jockey’s face indicated to me what he thinks!
He deserves to take his chance - whether he’s good enough is another matter.

“This horse has been running in handicaps but he didn’t get the breaks at Newbury on his seasonal debut when I think that he’d have beaten Pukka who went on and ran in the Derby.

“He was then unlucky at Royal Ascot and he had the form of a potential Group horse.”

Maraahel received a best-priced quote of 8/1 for the St Leger from Victor Chandler (from 14/1) and Ladbrokes (from 12/1). He is a 7/1 shot with Coral (from 14/1) and Paddy Power (from 14/1).

ST LEGER POINTERS AT GOODWOOD

This afternoon’s ABN Amro Stakes, registered as the Gordon Stakes, is the first of the season’s recognised St Leger trials. All bar two of the eight runners today are among 49 colts and fillies holding an entry in the oldest and longest Classic at Doncaster on September 11, the exceptions being German raider Lyonels Glory and once-raced Remaadd.

As a pointer to events on Town Moor, today’s 12-furlong Group 3 contest has a good recent record. In the past ten years, six Goodwood winners have gone on to run in the St Leger, producing two victories, a second place and two thirds.

The pair who completed the double were Godolphin’s Nedawi (who dead-heated here with Rabah) in 1998 and Millenary, trained by John Dunlop, in 2000.

In 1994 Broadway Flyer, trained by John Hills, beat all bar Moonax in the St Leger and the past two winners at Goodwood, Bandari (Mark Johnston) in 2002 and Phoenix Reach (Andrew Balding) 12 months ago, both subsequently finished third at Doncaster. Last year’s running also produced the St Leger runner-up, for High Accolade (Marcus Tregoning), a short-head behind Phoenix Reach, reversed the placings in the Classic.

The 1996 Goodwood winner St Mawes could finish only fifth at Doncaster but Samraan, sixth here, improved past him to take third place in the St Leger.

In the past 50 years, three other colts have won both races, Athens Wood (trained by Tom Jones) in 1971, Commanche Run (Luca Cumani) in 1984 and Minster Son (Neil Graham) in 1988.

The first three early favourites for the St Leger are three of the first four in the Derby, North Light, Let The Lion Roar and Percussionist. Of this afternoon’s runners, Godolphin’s Royal Ascot winner Duke Of Venice, one of seven Doncaster entries from the Dubai and Newmarket-based operation, is the most prominent in the ante-post lists. The blue silks have been carried to victory thrice in the St Leger, by Classic Cliche (1995) and Mutafaweq (1999) as well as Nedawi.

Aidan O’Brien’s charge Mikado is one of 16 Ballydoyle St Leger entries. The Co Tipperary stable has won two of the past three St Legers, with Milan (2001) and Brian Boru last year.

Race Two - the ABN Amro Stakes

DUKE OF VENICE WILL HAVE ANOTHER CHANCE

The Godolphin team were not despondent after the ABN Amro Stakes, despite 13-8 favourite Duke of Venice’s finishing only fifth.

“He absolutely hated the track,” said the blues’ racing manager Simon Crisford. “We could see that even before Frankie [Dettori] told us. You could see it in the horse’s body language. He would not face galloping downhill.

“He will run in another St Leger trial, and then we’ll take it from there. He is entered up everywhere, but one race he won’t be running in is the March Stakes back here!”

Race Three - The Betfair Cup (Group 2)

THE MAN FROM STREAKY BAY STREAKS HOME

Kerrin McEvoy, Godolphin’s number two rider this season, rode his biggest British winner on the Godolphin second string Byron in the Group Two Betfair Cup, although, as a Melbourne Cup victor, not the biggest of his career.

“I’m pleased to ride a winner here at the Goodwood carnival,” said the man from Streaky Bay, South Australia. “I’m happy to ride a group winner anywhere. He may have been the second string but with a team like Godolphin they’ve all got chances, that’s the thing.”

Stable companion Kheleyf, the 9-4 favourite, was slightly short of room at a crucial stage as the race hotted up, but did not find as much as expected anyway. “Kheleyf can be a bit of a character and my horse had good form,” said McEvoy. “He ran a good race in France [third in the French Guineas] and didn’t have a lot of luck at Ascot [unplaced in the St James’s Palace Stakes] but seven furlongs was going to be ideal for him and the tempo of the race and the way it was run suited him. He enjoyed himself today.

“When I asked him to go two furlongs out, he gave me a quick response and took off, I was pretty confident he’d last all the way to the line. I though Frankie might be coming strong but mine was the better one on the day. Even if Kheleyf had got clear earlier it would have taken a very good one to get by mine. That was my 23rd (Racing Post say 22) winner here this year, seven or eight from outside rides.”

Simon Crisford, the Godolphin racing manager, was surprised by the winner’s starting price of 16-1. “I thought that 16-1 was much too big a price for a Mill Reef winner,” he said. “He was a Group 1 placee dropping back in trip and company, perfect for him. He had a hard enough race in the French Guineas and I think Ascot may have come just a bit too quick for him.

“The whole stable quite liked him, he ran a huge race in France and then suffered from the bounce factor at Ascot. This is best trip and he’s well up to Group Two standard, as we saw last year in the Mill Reef. He’s a quality colt, not very big but all heart.”

Crisford paid tribute to McEvoy. “Kerrin is a real professional and a great asset to us. Frankie is our number one but Kerrin is super for us because he has a lot of finesse and is very sensitive with the two-year-olds, helping them learn and progress for their three-year-old campaigns.”

The Godolphin superstar Doyen will next be seen in Ireland in September. “Doyen is very well indeed and we decided last night that he will go for the Irish Champion Stakes as his next race, as we indicated after the King George. We’ll get that out of the way and then think about the Arc. But if he stays in training next year then there’ll be more to come as he’s only just beginning to fulfil his potential now.”

RACE THREE THE GROUP 2 BETFAIR CUP
PLACED QUOTES

SUGGESTIVE BELIES ODDS TO CLAIM SECOND

The William Haggas-trained Suggestive stayed on well at a price of 25/1 to finish runner-up, beaten three-quarters of a length by Byron.

Haggas said: “That’s the second time in a row he’s been drawn one which doesn’t help - he had no cover at Ascot last time which explains his bad run there.

“He loves it here at Goodwood and he’ll come back for the Celebration Mile [on Saturday, August 28, 2004].

“He’s a pleasure horse and he gives the owner [Barbara Bassett] a lot of fun. As long as he keeps running like that we can put up with the odd stinker!”

RACE FOUR THE GROUP 3 BETFAIR MOLECOMB STAKES
WIN QUOTES

CHANNON ALL SMILES

Mick Channon was in a jubilant mood after Tournedos came with a late run to haul in Mary Read by a neck and in the process end a period of bad luck for the trainer, who despite having three winners in the last fortnight had endured 11 placed horses.

Channon said: “That’s racing - Pick Up Stics was very unlucky at Ascot on Sunday and another two-year-old didn’t get the best of breaks. That was the plan today for him to sort himself out and Ted [Durcan, jockey] rode him that way.

“He was out in the open in the Weatherbys Super Sprint last time and we wanted to cover him up today. I’m pleased for Ted - it looked like they had gone too fast and that was perfect. It worked today while a lot of the time it doesn’t.”

Tournedos was stuck on the rail today for much of the race, still last below the distance but, switched wide, he flew home.

“Even today Tournedos didn’t get the luck when he wanted it,” continued the trainer. “I thought that he had a chance today but it’s hard with these two-year-olds that need covering up - they went real fast and set him up.

“They were all across the course in the Super Sprint. I was thinking about nurseries after this race but I wanted to wait and see how he ran today.

“The Roses Stakes, a Listed race at York could be an option or the Flying Childers at Doncaster. Or perhaps a race in France such as the Abbaye! No seriously I’ll keep him to racing against two-year-olds.”

Race Four - the Betfair Molecomb Stakes

A FIRST FOR TED AT GOODWOOD - JUST

In catching Mary Read and beating her a neck in the Betfair Molecomb Stakes, Tournedos gave Ted Durcan his first Group winner at Goodwood, but half-way through the race the jockey was convinced it would not happen. “Where I was among horses, I needed luck, and it just wasn’t happening early,” he said.

“At the one and a half marker I still had nowhere to go even though I had plenty of horse under me. But the leaders had gone off extremely hard. I could see Brian Meehan’s horse next to me [Siena Gold] was hard at work and I know she’s got plenty of speed, so if she was under pressure then the pace was furious.

“So I remained where I was and just waited for the split. When it came mine picked up really well. He had seemed a good horse when he was second at Royal Ascot [to Chateau Istana in the Windsor Castle Stakes], and today he’s proved it.”

Tournedos bounced back after defeat in the Super Sprint at Newbury. “We were a bit disappointed after Newbury,” added Durcan, “but the race there didn’t pan out for him. An odd race, all spread out. He’s better among horses and it didn’t really happen for him there.

“I’ve won big handicaps here, but this is my first Group win at Goodwood. It’s a good place to have one.”

Race Five - the Tatler Summer Season Stakes

CUMANI HAS A CUNNING PLAN

Mephisto galloped to favouritism for next month’s Tote Ebor Handicap at York with his thrilling victory in the Tatler Summer Season Stakes, a half-length success that brought up a hat-trick for the strapping five-year-old.

But it was not until inside the final furlong that rider Darryll Holland was able to extricate the gelding, the 7-2 favourite, from among horses to make the challenge that caught Sergeant Cecil close home. “That’s one of the problems with this track,” said winning trainer Luca Cumani, “it’s rather hit and miss whether plans work. The idea from his draw [16 of 16 on a hold-up horse] was to stick to the rail until the straight and then gradually work our way towards the outside.

“But there was nowhere for him to go so he had to sit and wait and hope. Thank goodness they had gone off fast and opened up. To be able to respond like he did once the gap appeared a horse has to be travelling, and he was.”

Cumani now has a stranglehold on the Ebor market. Mephisto is generally 6-1 for the York race, with his stablemate Alkaased, who runs in the Listed Glorious Stakes at Goodwood on Friday, second market choice. “We’ll see how the other one runs and then make decsions,” said Cumani, “but there isn’t much else for this one, so he’ll probably go to York, penalty and all.”

The Bedford House trainer owns part of Mephisto, who is out of his one-time charge Cunning. “I sold her to Sheikh Hamdan, but she didn’t do anything for him as a broodmare so he sold her and Mephisto, who I bought as a yearling. He’s by Machiavellian - I think Barney Curley would have been a better name for him.”

Cumani had news of ex-Italian Le Vie dei Colori, who he saddles for the first time in the Cantor Odds Sussex Stakes on Wednesday. “I’ve had him only since June so I can’t truly claim to know him well, but he’s in good form and I’m happy with his condition. It is a tough race, though, against the best milers in the world.”

SERGEANT CECIL FINDS ONE TOO GOOD

Rod Millman was pleased with his runner-up Sergeant Cecil, who found Mephisto half a length too powerful, although he conceded that his charge had probably flown for home too soon.

He said: “He ran a very good race and when you have a hold-up horse here, you have to go when you can because you might not get a clear run later and that’s what Jimmy [Fortune] did. When he gets to the front he just does enough for a furlong but saying that Darryl [Holland, winning jockey] has done the job.

“I was hoping to get a penalty by winning here so we would get into the Ebor but I’ll just have to hope that he gets in now.

“He can run over any trip but he doesn’t want to go too soon and I’m very proud of him. There aren’t many other races for him but we’ll think about the Cesarewitch and hold him up - he’ll have some horses to go past there! I’m chuffed though because second prize here is as good as a winner anywhere else.”

Gerard Butler, trainer of third-placed Jagger, a further half a length adrift, said: “I’m a bit gutted as he was stopped at a vital stage and then he picked up well. Saying that the winner got the job done and we’ll lock horns again in the Ebor.”

Jagger received a best-priced quote of 12/1 (from 14/1) for the Ebor from Victor Chandler, while Paddy Power were less generous at 10/1 (from 14/1).

RACE SIX EVENING STANDARD EBF MAIDEN STAKES
WIN QUOTES

BRITTAIN EXPECTS

Clive Brittain’s Doctor’s Cave defied odds of 50/1 to beat Dubai Millennium’s first-born Rajwa by a neck.

Brittain said: “I expect everything - the price didn’t worry me and I told him that he was a 6/4 shot this morning!

“I never underestimate my horses - he’s seen so many Godolphin horses in the morning at Newmarket that he thinks he is a Godolphin horse!”

Asked if he meant it when he said sorry to a sporting Sheikh Mohammed, who was congratulating the winning handler, Brittain replied, “I was lying! He could well be my Kentucky Derby horse the way that he has run today - he showed a lot of speed and is as tough as old boots.

“He didn’t stay on the soft ground over seven and a half furlongs at Beverley and he has been a little slow maturing. Physically he looks good but mentally he’s a bit behind. He could go for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile although he would have to go for something a bit stronger than this before that - saying that this looked quite strong.

“I owed Seb [Sanders, winning jockey] something after one of mine knocked five fences down at Lingfield last week, held racing up for half an hour and did a map survey of Lingfield!”

Race Six - Evening Standard EBF Maiden Stakes

RAJWA WILL BE BETTER FOR THE EXPERIENCE
Godolphin’s Rajwa started the evens favourite on his debut in the Evening Standard EBF Maiden over six furlongs and looked all over the winner before being caught close home by 50/1 outsider Doctor’s Cave.

Frankie Dettori, Rajwa’s pilot, said: “He ran very well and just found one with more experience. Nevertheless, it was a good introduction.”

Rajwa was the first-born of Dubai Millennium’s 56 offspring and trainer Saeed bin Suroor commented: “He will improve for this race.”

Race Seven - the Darnley Stakes

FIRSTS FOR MORRISON AND FLETCHER

The Pango bandwagon rolled on as the five-year-old defied a 4lb rise to bring up his hat-trick in the Darnley Handicap, beating Ringsider by half a length. In the process, he gave trainer Hughie Morrison his first Festival week winner and a first at any Goodwood meeting for apprentice rider Luke Fletcher.

“The horse’s progress has been amazing,” said East Ilsley-based Morrison. “Second twice and now three wins. When you win the second one you feel you’ve probably stuffed the whole thing. He’s a home-bred horse, bred locally to me in Berkshire by Tim Billington, and he’s what racing is all about.

“He gives me huge pleasure. Winning is good, but the owners get so much delight from just racing him. This is our first winner at Goodwood week. It will make the 90-mile drive each day a bit easier to bear.”

Morrison sounded a note of caution over his next runner at the meeting, Odiham in Wednesday’s cantorodds.com Handicap. “He hasn’t run much, but he’s a nice horse,” he said. “He won his first handicap first time out this year then went to Ascot. It was too firm for him there; he’s better off on good ground and I must say they’ve done a fantastic job with the watering here, I must congratulate them. But possibly he’ll need serious rain to let himself down fully.”

“Good, good-to-firm in places”.

Seamus Buckley, raceday clerk of the course, said: “The going stick reading is 8.4. We have been watering, and will be watering again when and where as necessary to keep moisture in the ground.”

Watering started at Goodwood, which is on a chalk downland base, after the previous meeting last month.

“The aim is always to keep the grass growing and keep the ground safe,” added Buckley. “Here, the ground drains easily and we have to keep on it all the time and we’ve not had that much help from nature recently, just the odd shower.

“Over the past week, we’ve put on 30 millimetres (1 1/4") and will be watering part of the course after racing tonight.”

Temporary running rails will be removed to produce fresh ground as the week progresses.

Buckley explained: “The rails on the far side of the course in the straight over the last four furlongs of the straight course will be taken down after racing tomorrow [Wednesday] night, and on Thursday evening the remainder of the rail around the lower bend on the far side of the course.

“The temporary rail on the top bend will be removed on Friday night for the Group 1 Vodaphone Nassau Stakes on Saturday.”

BETTING NEWS

Victor Chandler reports money for Godolphin’s Fantastic Love in the opening Sterling Insurance Summer Handicap (2.05pm), who is now 9/2 from 6/1, while in the same contest Spanish Don has been trimmed into 7/1 from 8/1. There has also been support for Brian Meehan’s Chinkara, who is a 12/1 shot (from 14/1).

Irish bookmaker Paddy Power has made exactly the same moves with Spanish Don and Chinkara.

Coral says Manyana is the one punters want in the ABN Amro Stakes (2.40pm) - he is 12/1 from 16/1.

Chandlers has also seen money for Vanderlin in the Betfair Cup (3.15pm) - the five-year-old is 12/1 from 16/1, while Naahy has seen slightly less support in the same event being cut from 16/1 to 14/1.

French raider Crystal Castle is 4/1 from 5/1 for this race with Paddy Power, who also reports cash for Vanderlin (10/1 from 16/1). The same two horses attracted money at Coral - Crystal Castle is 4/1 from 9/2 and Vanderlin is now 11/1 from 14/1.

Mephisto has been the only horse backed with Paddy Power for the Tatler Summer Season Stakes (4.25pm) - Luca Cumani’s charge is now trading at 5/1, having been 11/2.

What-A-Dancer has seen sustained support in the concluding Darnley Handicap (5.35pm) with both Victor Chandler and Paddy Power. Punters have obviously latched on to the fact that Alan Swinbank’s contestant will have the power of champion jockey Kieren Fallon in the saddle and he is now 6/1 from 9/1 with Paddy Power, while Victor Chandler offers 7/1 from 8/1.

Paddy Power customers believe Frankie Dettori will be the top jockey at the meeting supporting him from 7/4 into 11/8, with Kieren Fallon with drifting from 7/4 to 9/4. Darryll Holland is next best on 7/1. Coral punters also think the might of Godolphin will prevail for Dettori this week and the charismatic Italian is an even money shot from 15/8.

VANDALISM AT COURSE

Goodwood Racecourse is saddened to report that it has been subjected to an act of vandalism on the course at the weekend, just prior to its 5 day Festival Meeting which began today (Tuesday, July 27).

The incident is now in the hands of the police.

The vandalism has caused cosmetic damage to a small area of the course but the safety of the racing surface has not been compromised.

The Jockey Club Course Inspector has been informed and appropriate remedial works have been carried out.

Security arrangements are being reviewed and adjusted in light of this unfortunate incident.
