DIAMOND MEETING SECOND DAY
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
ASCOT, SATURDAY, JULY 24, 2004

FIFTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
KING GEORGE VI AND QUEEN ELIZABETH DIAMOND STAKES (GROUP 1)

DETTORI DECLARES DOYEN HIS EASIEST KING GEORGE WINNER

Doyen justified 11/10 favouritism with a brilliant three-length success in the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes under Frankie Dettori, who was winning the prize for a fourth time - one less than trainer Saeed bin Suroor.

“This was the easiest King George winner I have ridden,” declared Dettori. “Daylami won by five lengths but we were off the bridle three out, but I could have won by much further today if I’d wanted. Doyen is the one that travelled best out of all my winners.

“The King George is a special race and he’s a special horse, I’ve been nervous all week about this. Now we can say it - he is one of the finest. He was absolutely devastating - unbelievable..

“The trouble with riding a good horse like this is that you always think they are going too slow, I wanted to shout at them to tell them to get going.

“He can only learn and get better and better. He looks like a monument andis one of the best-looking horses I’ve ridden. He walks round with so much presence.”

Godolphin’s racing manager Simon Crisford added: “I think the key with him is being allowed time to develop both physically and mentally. He was a little unsettled in Dubai which is why we didn’t go for the Sheema Classic and he was a bit lost when he came to Newmarket.

“His profile was nearly there and he has just needed this win to get him to that point. The Irish Champion Stakes might be next for him, but we haven’t really talked it over with Sheikh Mohammed. He’s in all the obvious races - the Arc and Breeders’ Cup as well. This horse goes on any ground, whether it is bottomless or very fast.

“This has been a wonderful year, we’ve got good older horses that can compete in all the top races and our three-year-olds have been better this season than last year. We have been placed in all the classics so far with the likes of Rule Of Law, Punctilious and Snow Ridge. We have more depth in that department so we could be positive for the first half of the season, but from now on we will be looking to the older horses to carry the flag.”

Sheikh Mohammed added: “The sky is now the limit, we will take him all over Europe and America which means the Arc and the Breeders’ Cup Turf and he is a very special horse.

“The Coronation Cup was just a stepping stone - he was not really ready but he improved to win the Hardwicke and he is only just peaking now. The sky is the limit with him. I would put him right up there with Daylami, Swain and Lammtarra.”

Trainer Saeed bin Suroor added: “In the morning he doesn’t show a lot, he just does what you ask him. But this was very similar to how he won his last race here.

“I will talk to Sheikh Mohammed but there are lots of big races for him including the Arc, Irish Champion Stakes then later on the Breeders’ Cup and Japan Cup. I think the Japan Cup would be good for him because you need a horse that handles good-to-firm or firm ground and gets a mile and a half. And Doyen has the class.”

Sulamani ran a good race to be third and Crisford added: “We knew the ground wasn’t right for him today but I knew it was safe. If it came up softer at York we might think about going there.”

Bin Suroor added: “Sulamani ran a really good race and I was very happy with him.”

THE WINNER - DOYEN (IRE)

4 b c Sadler’s Wells (USA) - Moon Cactus (Kris)
Owner: Godolphin Breeder: Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum
Form: 5/11124-211 Trainer: Saeed bin Suroor Jockey: Frankie Dettori

DoyenBred by Sheikh Mohammed, Doyen began his career in France with Andre Fabre. On his sole outing as a two-year-old, the son of Sadler’s Wells finished fifth in a nine-furlong contest at Maisons-Laffitte, after running very green. His three-year-old career got off to the perfect start when he was successful over a mile and a half at Saint-Cloud and he went to land his next two starts, both over 12 furlongs, at Lyon Parilly in the Listed Coupe des Trois Ans and at Longchamp in the Group Three Prix du Lys. He was then given a summer break before being brought back for an autumn campaign. On September 14 he ran a good race to finish second to last year’s horse of the year Dalakhani in the Group Two Prix Niel at Longchamp, going down by a length and a half. Doyen’s final start of 2003 saw him reoppose Dalakhani in the Group One Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp, where he put up a respectable effort to come home in fourth place. Doyen was transferred to Godolphin at the end of the year and made his seasonal reappearance in the Group One Vodafone Coronation Cup at Epsom on June 4, when he found Warrsan a length and three quarters too strong. His most recent start was at Royal Ascot on June 19 in the Group Two Hardwicke Stakes over a mile and a half, when he was most impressive in defeating High Accolade by six lengths and smashing Stanerra’s 21-year-old course record in the process. He won today’s King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Staskes very easily.

Godolphin Godolphin is the racing entity of Sheikh Mohammed, other members of the ruling Maktoum family of Dubai and friends, and its aim is to prepare horses in Dubai during the winter to gain the advantage when challenging for major races worldwide. The experiment began on a small scale in the winter of 1992, with horses enjoying the benefits of the warm climate before arriving in Britain for the 1993 season. The Godolphin operation was properly established in 1994, with Hilal Ibrahim as trainer, when Balanchine won the Vodafone Oaks and Irish Derby. The following year Saeed bin Suroor was appointed as the official trainer. When flown over from Dubai, the main base, in late April, the horses are stabled at Godolphin Stables, Moulton Paddocks and Highfield Stables in Newmarket. In 1999 and 2000, Godolphin’s two-year-olds were housed at the former Evry racecourse in France under the care of David Loder, who in 2001 relocated to Godolphin Stables in Newmarket, although 2003 was his last year as Godolphin’s juvenile handler. Godolphin’s famous blue colours have been carried to victory in every British classic bar the Vodafone Derby, although Saeed bin Suroor did train Lammtarra to win the premier classic for Saeed Maktoum Al Maktoum in 1995 and Godolphin claims this success. The British Godolphin classic successes so far have been UltimateBet.com 2000 Guineas (1996 Mark Of Esteem, 1999 Island Sands), UltimateBet.com 1000 Guineas (1998 Cape Verdi, 2002 Kazzia), Vodafone Oaks (1994 Balanchine, 1995 Moonshell, 2002 Kazzia) and St Leger (1995 Classic Cliche, 1998 Nedawi, 1999 Mutafaweq). Daylami led an historic 1-2-3 in the 1998 Coral-Eclipse, the first time that the same owner and trainer had the first three in a British Group One, and the Godolphin ambitions, other than landing the Vodafone Derby, include taking the American Triple Crown series, winning the Japan Cup, Melbourne Cup and capturing the World Series Racing Championship which was achieved in 1999, the inaugural year, by Daylami, Fantastic Light (2000 and 2001) and Grandera (2002). Godolphin’s tally of 107 Group/Grade One wins includes the Dubai World Cup (1999 Almutawakel, 2000 Dubai Millennium, 2002 Street Cry, 2003 Moon Ballad), Irish 2,000 Guineas (2000 Bachir), French 2,000 Guineas (2000 Bachir), Irish Derby (1994 Balanchine), Breeders’ Cup Turf (1999 Daylami, 2001 Fantastic Light), Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ (2001 Tempera), King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes (1997 & 1998 Swain, 1999 Daylami), Irish Champion Stakes (1994 Cezanne, 1998 Swain, 1999 Daylami, 2001 Fantastic Light, 2002 Grandera), Irish St Leger (1998, 1999 Kayf Tara), Arlington Million (2003 Sulamani - the 100th G1 winner) and three Prix de l’Arc de Triomphes (1995 Lammtarra, 2001 Sakhee and 2002 Marienbard). Godolphin has been leading British owner in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2001 and this year has an expanded team of over 200 horses. Godolphin enjoyed a very successful Royal Ascot with six winners, including Refuse To Bend in the Queen Anne Stakes, who subsequently won the Coral-Eclipse, and Papineau in the Gold Cup.

King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes Wins: 1997 SWAIN, 1998 SWAIN, 1999 DAYLAM, 2004 DOYENI

Saeed bin Suroor
Godolphin’s trainer, former policeman Saeed bin Suroor, was born in Dubai on October 10, 1967. He has been champion British trainer three times - in 1996, 1998 and 1999 - but a low-key season for Godolphin in 2000 saw him finish only seventh in the table, recovering to third in 2001, fifth in 2002 though slipping to 16th last season. Coupled with his phenomenal achievements with Godolphin, bin Suroor trained the unbeaten Lammtarra for Sheikh Mohammed’s nephew, Saeed Maktoum Al Maktoum, to win the 1995 Vodafone Derby, Ascot’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes and Prix de l Arc de Triomphe. That the horse raced only four times in his career and yet was trained by bin Suroor to succeed in those three pre-eminent Group One events is an achievement which cannot be overstated. Bin Suroor is aided by racing manager Simon Crisford. Cape Verdi’s UltimateBet.com 1000 Guineas win completed the full set of British classics for bin Suroor in 1998. His domestic classic winners are UltimateBet.com 1000 Guineas (1998 Cape Verdi, 2002 Kazzia), UltimateBet.com 2000 Guineas (1996 Mark Of Esteem, 1999 Island Sands), Vodafone Derby (1995 Lammtarra), Vodafone Oaks (1995 Moonshell, 2002 Kazzia) and St Leger (1995 Classic Cliche, 1998 Nedawi, 1999 Mutafaweq). Godolphin has enjoyed numerous other big-race wins worldwide and last year saw Godolphin achieve over 100 Grade/Group One races, with the best victories coming with Moon Ballad in the Dubai World Cup and Sulamani in the Arlington Million. Bin Suroor is currently heading the trainers’ championship in Britain, largely due to six winners at Royal Ascot, Rule Of Law’s second in the Vodafone Derby and Refuse To Bend’s victory in the Coral-Eclipse. Frankie Dettori
Born in Milan on December 15, 1970, the son of Gianfranco, a multiple champion jockey in Italy, Frankie Dettori arrived from his homeland to join Luca Cumani’s Newmarket yard as an apprentice in July, 1985. His first success came on Rif at Turin, Italy, on November 16, 1986, and he rode his first British winner on Lizzy Hare at Goodwood on June 9, 1987. He was champion British apprentice in 1989 and passed 100 winners for the first time in 1990 when recording 141 successes. Has since captured the hearts of racegoers with his flamboyant style, phenomenal riding successes, and charisma in and out of the saddle. Champion jockey in 1994 and 1995, Dettori created history when riding all seven winners on the first-day card at the Ascot Festival in September, 1996. His ground-breaking exertions brought recognition beyond racing’s own sphere when he was voted into third place in the 1996 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards and he is now a team captain on ‘A Question Of Sport’. While victory in the Vodafone Derby still eludes Dettori, Cape Verdi’s win in the 1998 UltimateBet.com 1000 Guineas means that he has tasted success in all four other domestic classics at least once, as well as a host of high-profile international successes, including the 1995 and 2002 Arcs on Lammtarra and Marienbard respectively, the Japan Cup on Singspiel in 1996 and Falbrav in 2002, the Dubai World Cup on Dubai Millennium (2000), and Moon Ballad (2003) and the Breeders’ Cup Turf on Daylami in 1999 and in 2001 on Fantastic Light. Dettori, who is retained by the Godolphin team, survived an horrific plane crash at Newmarket in 2000 in which the pilot was killed and missed part of the season as a result. He is married to Catherine with four young children.King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes Record (Since 1980): 1990-10 Legal Case, 1991-7 Luchiroverte, 1993-5 Drum Taps, 1994-6 Foyer, 1995-1 LAMMTARRA, 1997-4 Singspiel, 1998-1 SWAIN, 1999-1 DAYLAMI, 2001-2 Fantastic Light, 2002-5 Grandera, 2003-2 Sulamani, 2004-1 DOYEN Sa27.

PLACED QUOTES RACE FIVE
KING GEORGE V1 AND QUEEN ELIZABETH DIAMOND STAKES

“WE WILL BE BACK, SAYS McPEEK

“I am very proud of what we have achieved and we will be back,” declared American trainer Kenny McPeek after his 33-1 Hard Buck had beaten all but Doyen in the King George V1 and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes.

“From the moment I first saw this horse I was sure that he was up to winning in the best company in the world and I am delighted with what he has done here.

“But what a horse the winner is. He has to be one of the most beautiful, brilliant thoroughbreds that I have ever seen -- he is a wonderful horse.

“I told Gary to keep an eye out for Doyen and the plan was for Hard Buck to try to eyeball him, but he just came past us and swept away; what a fantastic horse he is.

“The logistics of coming here are quite complicated but it can be done and so much depends on the help you can get. We have been wonderfully looked after since we came over here; Geoff Wragg, with whom we stabled the horse, has been a wonderful host and Nick Cheyne (Ascot’s clerk of the course) has looked after us marvellously. And my assistant Helen Jorgensen has done a great job in looking after him.

“I don’t know what we will do now. We’ll get the horse back to Newmarket and see how he is but there are no plans for him at the moment.

“We shall look at the Arc (there is a Paddy Power quote of 20-1 for Longchamp) and the big races in Germany and if he is in the same form in 12 months’ time as he has in the lead-up to this race today we shall certainly be back. This is a good race for us to target.

“I am very proud, but I also like winning. I have been second in the Kentucky Derby, the Kentucky Oaks, the Breeders’ Cup and now the King George and I would like to think that one of those races has my name on it somewhere.”

Gary Stevens, who rode Hard Buck, was equally enthusiastic about the horse’s display. “He has run a really good race and it was a great team effort from everyone involved,” he said.

Race Five - King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes

OTHER KING GEORGE QUOTES

Kerrin McEvoy (Sulamani -third) - “I was following Frankie and then when the race developed about four out he just sprinted away from me. My horse finished well and has run a creditable third - he would have got second in another few strides.”

Kieren Fallon (Gamut, 4th) - “It was a combination of a lack of pace and the ground being too firm, but he has run well under the circumstances.”

Oliver Peslier (Vallee Enchantee, 5th) - “I made my move at the same time as the winner, but, whereas he quickened, my filly took a deep breath and fell in a heap.”

Richard Hills (Bandari, 7th) - “We were handicapped by the outside draw, especially as they went quick early and then slowed it right up at half-way. I tried to ride an identical race as I had done at Newmarket (when he won the Princess of Wales’s Stakes) but I was always being pushed wide and had to come round the outside.”

Darryll Holland (Warrsan, 9th) - “It was a non-event for me. They went no pace and my horse wants a proper end-to-end gallop. It was all very disappointing.”

ROYAL ASCOT AT YORK CONFIRMED A FIVE DAY FIXTURE

ROYAL PROCESSION TO OPEN EACH DAY OF THE MEETING

Ascot Racecourse is delighted to announce today that Her Majesty the Queen has graciously consented to a five day fixture for Royal Ascot at York, from Tuesday 14th to Saturday 18th June 2005, and to a Royal Procession on all five days.

Ascot Racecourse can announce that tickets for the public enclosures and hospitality packages will go on sale on Monday, 4th October, and Royal Enclosure Badges will be available from Tuesday, 4th January.

Ascot and York Racecourses will contact everyone on their databases to publicise these dates and the Royal Enclosure list will be written to later this year.

The order of running for Royal Ascot at York will broadly mirror that of this year and precise details will be confirmed in due course.

“We're absolutely delighted to be able to confirm that the five day fixture will be retained in 2005,” said Douglas Erskine-Crum, Chief Executive at Ascot.

“There will be a Royal Enclosure and having set capacity at 50,000, we are working closely with York to determine the precise delineation of all the enclosures. Similarly, we're talking with all the hospitality groups and stakeholders at both tracks to accommodate as many as possible.”

William Derby, Chief Executive at York added: “It's tremendous news for both the familiar Ascot audience and the regulars at York that everything that makes the Royal Meeting so special will be coming to York. The Royal Procession on the Knavesmire will be a real piece of history and we're delighted to be accommodating and supporting the Ascot team during their £185 million redevelopment.”

A LOOK AHEAD TO SUNDAY

The £70,000 Hong Kong Jockey Club Sprint Handicap is the highspot of what promises to be a fascinating and entertaining third day of the Diamond Meeting at Ascot tomorrow. No fewer than 28 have been declared for the race and, as is invariably the case in valuable sprint handicaps, that tally includes a strong team trained by Dandy Nicholls.

His nine contenders include top weight Bahamian Pirate, who won at Newmarket last night, the 2002 Ayr Gold Cup winner Funfair Wane and Blackheath, who ran here yesterday.

Another trainer well represented is Milton Bradley, whose contenders include Whitbarrow, Whistler and Corridor Creeper, while Sir Mark Prescott, whose horses have bounced into form in the last fortnight, has an interesting challenger in First Order, runner-up to and entitled to reversing form with the penalised Connect at Newmarket last week on his first appearance of the season.

Other penalised challengers include Pivotal Point, the first of Frankie Dettori’s four winners here at the last meeting, and running in this race in preference to the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood next weekend, and Artie from Tim Easterby’s stable.

The day begins with a mile and a quarter Fullerton Trophy (classified stakes) in which Wunderwood from Lady Herries’ yard, will be bidding to add to his Ascot wins following his success on the final day of the Royal meeting when he landed some shrewd bets.

Goodbye Mr Bond, who is trained by Eric Alston, will be bidding for his fifth win in a row when he contests the Cathay Pacific mile handicap, in which the back to form Welcome Stranger could be a threat.

James Eustace, who trains Welcome Stranger, has a sound chance in the two-year-old race, the Hong Kong International Sale Auction Trophy, with Ariodante, though Sacred Nuts will be hard to beat, and with Amanda Perrett’s horses back in form Soulacroix may not be disadvantaged by making his first appearance of the year in the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Handicap over a mile and a half.

WINNING QUOTES RACE ONE
EBF CROCKER BULTEEL MAIDEN STAKES

2,000 UP FOR DETTORI

Frankie Dettori rode his 2,000th domestic winner when Nightfall made just about all the running to take the opener by a short head from Moth Ball. It was in June, 1987 that he rode his first UK winner on Lizzy Hare and his very first success came on Rif in Turin the previous November.

“This is a great place to ride the 2,000th winner but I thought Ascot had turned on me when I came off going down to the start when Nightfall jinked. If the ground is good to firm, then I fell on the firm part,” Dettori said.

“I have lived here for 18 years and the British people have taken me to their hearts as if I was one of them. I have a wonderful job and a wonderful team to work with at Godolphin and great support from my family and friends. This was a great milestone for me.

“It was good to get the 2,000 in the first race as I would not have liked to be going out to ride Doyen still waiting for that one winner. There is enough pressure being on the hot favourite in the big race without having anything else to think about,” he added.

Nightfall had been expected to run well on his debut as trainer Saeed bin Suroor explained. “He has been working well and I was sure he would run well. He likes doing all his work from the front, which is why he made the running today, but he was not 100% today and I am sure that he will improve for this run.

“He is still carrying some condition and I am sure he will be all the sharper for his next run. There are no plans for him at the moment, apart from the fact that he will have a bit of a break before his next run. I like him.”

Dettori still has something to do to catch Kieren Fallon and Darryll Holland at the top of the jockeys’ table, and Paddy Power offer 6-1 about him being champion jockey this season.

Having made the running and seen off challenges from Prince Samos and Taj India, Nightfall faced one last attack from Moth Ball, who might even have put his nose in front for a stride or two. But he rallied very bravely under pressure and was a short head in front at the line.

Race One - EBF Crocker Bulteel Maiden Stakes
Placed Quotes

MOTH BALL CAUGHT ON LINE

Jamie Osborne was delighted with Moth Blue’s short-head second behind Nightfall in the opening EBF Crocker Bulteel Maiden Stakes, and, glancing across at Frankie Dettori’s flying dismount to signify his 2,000th winner in Britain, the Upper Lambourn trainer reflected wryly “why couldn’t he have waited until Doyen?”

Osborne, who bought Moth Ball for 110,000gns, said:”He is a colt with a future, and I am lucky to have some very nice two-year-old colts this season.”

Reflecting on Moth Ball’s antics at the start, where he looked to be close to being withdrawn, Osborne added: “It was not his fault. They put him in the wrong stall and took him out and put him in another. There was a lot of rattling about at the gates, and, being a baby having his first run, he got a bit confused.”

Mick Channon, who trained third-placed Hallhoo, remains convinced that in this 210,000gns youngster he, too, has a colt with an exciting future.

He said: “I am chuffed to bits, He didn’t have much luck in running, but he has run a terrific race.

“Remember, Josr Algahoud also finished third in this race on his debut, and he bounced back to win the Gimcrack. This fellow would not be dissimilar to Josr, so who knows.”

SECOND RACE WINNING QUOTES
SOLITAIRE DIAMOND RATED STAKES

MONET IN THE MONEY

Three-year-old Mister Monet, who has always been held in the highest regard by trainer Mark Johnston, is starting to fulfil those great expectations, taking the Solitaire Diamond Rated Stakes by two lengths despite meeting traffic problems in running.

“I’ve always thought he was a Group horse and was quite surprised by his handicap rating although I was not complaining. I could understand why he didn’t go up for winning a classified stakes at Hamilton last time because it was a hard race to assess,” said Johnston. “So we had to really come here today.

“He was a very good two-year-old, finishing third to One Cool Cat first time out at York before winning but was then sidelined with lots of injury problems through the spring. So in some ways I was pretty disappointed when he was beaten first time out in a handicap this year.

“I was very worried about the traffic problems in the race, I could see it all building up. If you are boxed in on the bend at Ascot, they don’t fan out so Joe had to take extreme measures and virtually stop to pull him back.

“It takes a lot to get one back going again after something like that. We had no choice but to try and accelerate which is not easy up the Ascot hill - when people normally talk about horses accelerating in the finish it usually means the others are just slowing down.”

PLACED QUOTES RACE TWO
SOLITAIRE DIAMOND RATED STAKES

“HE RAN INTO A STAKES HORSE”

“I am very happy with that, though I had hoped that the winner would be kept for Goodwood next week and not run here; I had this race in mind for a long time for my fellow,” declared Jeremy Noseda after Courageous Duke had gone down by a length and a half to Mister Monet in the Solitaire Diamond Rated Handicap.

“I think time may show that he ran into a stakes and group horse in a Class B handicap and he has run very well.

“The thing about him is that he likes very, very quick ground. I am not sure that the Cambridgeshire is his race, though he may again be forced into running in it, and there is also a race at Newbury in September. He is also still in a race at Goodwood on Tuesday but we shall get him home first and see how he is after this.”

Henry Cecil, trainer and part owner of third home Fine Palette, said “I was pleased with that, He came there with a promising challenge but the other two had too much foot for him.Maybe now the handicapper will drop us.”

Those sentiments were echoed by Ed Dunlop who trains the fourth, Swift Tango - “he is in the grip of the handicapper” - and also by Michael Jarvis, who groaned “that is the fourth disappointing race in a row that Putra Sandhurst has run (the horse was eighth of nine) yet still the handicapper does not drop him. I have had some strong words with Nigel Gray and am just hoping that this has done the trick.”

GAMUT GIVEN GREEN LIGHT TO RUN

Less than 90 minutes before the starter was due to despatch the runners for the 2004 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes, trainer Sir Michael Stoute finally gave the green light for Gamut to run in the big race.

Sir Michael had deliberated long and hard whether to run Gamut, who wants good ground or easier, but after consultation with his jockey, Kieren Fallon, he opted to remain in.

He explained: “It took me two and three-quarter hours to get here, so I was unable to walk the course, but Kieren thinks the ground is safe, so we have decided to run.”

Race Three - Princess Margaret Stakes

SOAR IS CLIMBING THE LADDER

Two years ago Russian Rhythm took the Princess Margaret Stakes en route to winning the Lowther at York, and the Cheveley Park Stud, who own that brilliant classic-winning filly, are hoping that lightning might strike twice with Soar, who swept from last to first to win the Group 3 race by a decisive length and three-quarters from previous winner Valentin.

Russian Rhythm is trained by Sir Michael Stoute, but it is fellow Newmarket handler James Fanshawe who has charge of Soar, a similarly talented filly who had finished runner-up in the Queen Mary Stakes at the Royal Meeting.

Fanshawe said: “That is our 30th winner of the season and takes our prize money haul past £700,000, and things are really going well.

“Soar has always been a bit special - she has to be to have come out so early as that is not usually my style.

“But Soar has always had bags of natural talent. I trained her mother (Splice), but this one does not sweat as much as she did.”

Bookmakers were handing out quotes for next year’s 1000 Guineas, but Fanshawe insisted that he will stick to six furlongs.

He added: “It will York next stop and the Lowther Stakes - just look at her, she is built like a sprinter.”

Chris Richardson, managing director of the Cheveley Park Stud, had good news of Russian Rhythm, who has not run since winning the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury in May.

Richardson said: “She has been on the easy list, but Michael is pleased with her progress and reckons we need another week trotting.

“It is a case of the first hurdle completed, but if we continue on the right road it will be cantering next and then some faster work. I am delighted as we brought the sire (Danzero) over from Australia.”

PLACED QUOTES RACE THREE
PRINCESS MARGARET STAKES

VALENTIN WILL GO FURTHER NEXT TIME

Richard Hannon, trainer of runner-up Valentin, said: “I am very happy with that as I think she was in season -- she was swishing her tail about down at the gate as if she was. I’ll give her a rest now and step her up a furlong for something at the backend. I really do think she’s a lovely filly, she’s a one-off.”

Michael Bell was very happy by the effort of third-placed Kissing Lights, who was in front at halfway but could not stay with the winner in the closing stages. “I am delighted with that, we’ve got more than Ù4,000 for being third and, more importantly, she has got some black type as well. As a daughter of Machiavellian she will have great broodmare value,” he said.

“The stiff six furlongs here was just stretching her a bit and the easier six at York for the Lowther will suit her better. We were going to bypass this and wait for the Lowther, but decided to come here as well when this race cut up. She likes fast ground so we will be hoping for that at York.”

WINNING QUOTES RACE FOUR
totesport INTERNATIONAL HANDICAP

LATE AND THEN LATER

A brave plan by his trainer Ed Dunlop laid the ground for Court Masterpiece’s success in the totesport International Handicap and as part of the strategy the horse did not arrive at Ascot until less than an hour before his race.

“For some reason he has been running very badly when he was not at Newmarket and we could not work out why. When he went to Haydock for his second run this year he became terribly upset when he came off the lorry, he was almost climbing the wall and ran very disappointingly. We could not work out why, but when he then ran two good races at Newmarket, most recently in the Bunbury Cup at the July meeting, we wondered if being close home made a difference; he can just walk to the races there as it is so close to the yard.

“So this time we decided to travel him with earplugs not to get here too soon, so that he would not need to get into a racecourse stable and see if that might help him. The idea was to get here about an hour and a quarter before his race so that he could come off the lorry, have a walk round and then go into the pre-parade ring, without having to go into another stable that was not his own.

“He left Newmarket at midday and then the lorry got stuck in the traffic - my runner in the second race left at 6.30 am - so that my travelling head lad Robin Trevor-Jones was getting very worried when he did not arrive when we wanted him to. Happily he got here in time (about 45 minutes beforehand) and it all worked out well - it may sound very clever but it was nothing special really.

“Fortunately, as well, he got rid of the ear plugs when he shook his head in the parade ring; otherwise I was going to have to tell Kieren (Fallon) that he would have to take them out at the start.

“We had high hopes of this horse when he won at Goodwood last year but unfortunately he cracked an ankle in that race and was out for the rest of the season. We wanted to go back to Group races with him, but when he came to this race with such a reasonable handicap mark we had to come here and miss next week. He will be back at Goodwood later, though, as the Celebration Mile (Group Two) will be his next race.”

Race Four - totesport International Heritage Handicap

GARY STEVENS SO CLOSE WITH “SPARE”

With Richard Hughes being stood down, having tweaked a ligament in his back at Newmarket last night, Gary Stevens came in for a tasty spare ride on topweight Polar Way in the totesport International Heritage Handicap, and the Californian superstar got within a neck of landing the £87,000 first prize.

“Perhaps I hit the front too soon, but he has run a terrific race with that big weight and don’t change anything,” said Stevens to trainer Amanda Perrett on dismounting.

Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner-breeder Khalid Abdullah, said: “Richard probably won’t ride tomorrow either, but Gary gave Polar Way a lovely ride, and I thought for a moment that the horse was going to emulate Tillerman, who won this race for us four years ago.

“Easier ground might have helped, but, though the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury on August 14 would seem a likely target, it might come too soon as he likes his races spaced out.”

Uhoomagoo (33-1) ran a smashing race to finish third, and Kevin Ryan revealed that the Northern challenger might come back down South next week for a tilt at another big pot at Goodwood.

Ryan said: ”John (Egan) had never sat on the horse before, yet he has shown what a great horseman he is by giving the old boy a fantastic ride.

“I was sure that they would split into two groups and was amazed that they all came up the stands side, but all credit to John, who worked out Uhoomagoo at the first time of asking, which is not easy.

“He is a horse who has to have cover, but when you do move on him you have to go wide so as not to be stopped as when he is checked he will pull up on you.

“But John has done a great job, and, though we have Uhoomagoo in a big handicap at Goodwood next Friday, I think we’ll run him in the classified race there the previous day.”

AMERICAN AMBITIONS FOR VORTEX

Gay Kelleway was far from despondent after Vortex, the 4/1 favourite, finished fourth bhind Court Masterpiece in the £150,000 Tote International Handicap.

“I think he is a 10lb better horse on the all-weather and Frankie just thought he couldn’t go so well on the rising ground here, he kept changing his lead leg.

“I was quite surprised he went off as such a short-priced favourite and am not disappointed by that. He ran a very good race at Newbury last week and I just wonder if we should not have gone there now.

“I managed to sneak him into the Shergar Cup back here in August before his weight went up so he’ll go there next for the Mile.

“After that we are looking to go to America and we are thinking about having a go at the Saratoga race (Grade 2 Saratoga Breeders’ Cup Handicap) that Running Stag won.

“He raced on the American dirt in Sweden and loved it so he should be well suited to the US. I think he will be even better next season, he has really improved from four to five.”

Race Six - Star of South Africa Diamond Handicap
Winning Quotes

NADINE A NUMBER ONE HIT

Nadine Forde, a 23-year-old lass from Cork, rode such superstars as Giant’s Causeway and Galileo when she worked for Aidan O’Brien, but she confessed that clinching her first Flat winner on Hey Presto in the big ladies race, the Star of South Africa Diamond Handicap, was “something else.”

Forde, who conceded that she was “praying for the winning post to come closer” in the last 50 yards as Joey Ellis and the fast-finishing Treetops Hotel closed down on her in the shadow of the post, insisted that “nothing will beat this feeling.”

She said:”I heard Joey coming and I didn’t know whether I had held on, so it was a huge relief when the announcer called out number 16 as the winner.

“I have ridden one winner over hurdles for Martin Pipe at Exeter and also a point-to-point winner for Liam Burke, but winning a Flat race at Ascot is just beyond my wildest dreams.”

Clive Cox, who trained the winner, said:”Nadine has only been with me six weeks, but she had a pretty decent CV and she has done a great job on Hey Presto, who has been both frustrating and unlucky.”

WINNING QUOTES RACE SEVEN
SOUTH AFRICA ANNIVERSARY DIAMOND RATED STAKES

ANOTHER 1-2 FOR JOHNSTON

Mark Johnston, who had a first and second in one race yesterday when Mana d’Argent just beat Riyadh, repeated that performance in the closing South Africa Anniversary Diamond Handicap with Always Waining and Fort.

But though there was only a short head between the two yesterday, this time the gap was five lengths as Joe Fanning and the winner scooted clear in the final two furlongs.

“It is very nice to have a first and second, though the downside is that there has to be a loser,” said the trainer.

Referring to Always Waining as “a really progressive horse, Johnston indicated that he will be out again in the mile and six furlong handicap at Goodwood next week.

“He will have to carry a penalty, but I think that we can live with that,” he said. In view of the likely rise in the winner’s handicap mark after this display it is easy to understand his comment.

GROUND REMAINS GOOD TO FIRM

The going remains GOOD TO FIRM after racing today.

Nick Cheyne, Clerk of the Course at Ascot, reported: “I will be leaving the official going description as good to firm and we will be watering the course again tonight, putting on about five millimetres - the same as last night.

“The forecast is for a bit more of an overcast day tomorrow with the possibility of a shower later on.”

CROWD FIGURE

Today’s crowd figure was 31,457, compared to 37,797 last year.

GOING NEWS AT 10 AM

After another dry night the ground remains

GOOD TO FIRM

on all parts of the course.

“We put on five millimetres of water on the entire course after racing yesterday and it is highly likely that we will do the same this evening, though we shall monitor the situation throughout the day, see how the track is riding and decide how much to put on,” said clerk of the course Nick Cheyne.

“The forecast is for another dry, warm and sunny afternoon and that is likely to continue through tomorrow, though it may be a bit more overcast tomorrow and there is just a possibility of a shower, though it won’t amount to much.”

ASCOT, SATURDAY, JULY 24, 2004

4.25pm £750,000 KING GEORGE VI AND QUEEN ELIZABETH DIAMOND STAKES 1m 4f Group One
1) 2-011101 BANDARI (IRE) 5-9-07 Hamdan Al Maktoum Mark Johnston Richard Hills
Beat Sulamani last time out over 12 furlongs at Newmarket but probably flattered to do so. Disappointed over two furlongs shorter in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot. Has something to prove at this level
BP= 14/1

2) 1124-21 DOYEN (IRE) 4-9-07 Godolphin Saeed bin Suroor Frankie Dettori
Unlucky in the Vodafone Coronation Cup and then broke the course record for 12 furlongs at Ascot at the Royal Meeting when the easy winner of the Group Two Hardwicke Stakes. Good chance but is very short.

BP= 5/4

3) 123-211 GAMUT (IRE) 5-9-07 Gay Smith Sir Michael Stoute Kieren Fallon
Has come to his own this season, winning a Group One in France last time. He previously took the Jockey Club Stakes, Group Two, at Newmarket with Warrsan only third. May not run because he needs soft ground.

BP= 9/1

4) -41225 HARD BUCK (BRZ) 5-9-07 Team Victory Kenny McPeek USA Gary Stevens
Has raced consistently at the highest level and needs fast ground, a strong pace and a mile and a half - conditions he will gets here. Unfortunately, the American runner has not raced right-handed so far.

BP= 33/1

5) 6212-423 HIGH ACCOLADE 4-9-07 Lady Tennant Marcus Tregoning Johnny Murtagh
Consistent enough but held on this season’s form.

BP= 33/1

6) 106-300 LUNAR SOVEREIGN (USA) 5-9-07 Godolphin Saeed bin Suroor Ted Durcan
Pacemaker for Godolphin.

BP= 250/1

7) 1131-66 PHOENIX REACH (IRE) 4-9-07 Winterbeck Manor Stud Andrew Balding Martin Dwyer
Expected to do better here after two runs. But still has plenty to find. On last seson’s form is the same horse as High Accolade.

BP= 25/1

8) 42115-42 SULAMANI (IRE) 5-9-07 Godolphin Saeed bin Suroor Kerrin McEvoy
Has yet to win in Britain though he is a very smart horse at best. Has found the ground too fast in his two runs to date and is likely to do so again today. Has a new very sympathetic jockey today which may help. Second last year and cannot be dismissed.

BP= 9/1

9) 33-5312 WARRSAN (IRE) 6-9-07 Saeed Manana Clive Brittain Darryll Holland
Has run his two best races in recent runs, just being beat in the 10-furlong Coral Eclipse by Refuser To Bend and previously took the Vodafone Coronation Cup at Epsom. This may come a bit soon after his last race and he has yet to show his best form at Ascot.

BP= 6/1

10) 1411-43 VALLEE ENCHANTEE (IRE) 4-9-04 Ecurie Wildenstein Elie Lellouche FR Olivier Peslier
French filly who comes late and fast. Must have every chance but not one to rely on.

BP= 5/1

11) 3215-3 TYCOON 3-8-09 Sue Magnier Aidan O'Brien IRE Jamie Spencer
Stable is having a disappointing time but he ran very well in the Irish Derby and looks like he is being underestimated. Could run well.

BP= 20/1

SUMMARY
The value is with TYCOON each way.

ASCOT, SATURDAY, JULY 24, 2004

4.25pm £750,000 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes 1m 4f

Past Trends

14 of the last 15 winners had finished in the first three placings on their last outing

14 of the last 15 winners were aged between three and five

14 of the last 15 winners had finished in the first two at least once earlier in the campaign

13 of the last 15 winners had previously raced between one and four times earlier that season

Many racing enthusiasts consider the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot to be the race of the season. This is the contest where the best of the current generation, the three-year-olds, get an opportunity to take on their elder rivals over a mile and a half.

The connections of the classic-generation horses know that should their charge be successful, they will enter the category of truly great racehorses.

14 of the last 15 winners had finished in the first three placings on their last outing - the one exception during this time was Sir Michael Stoute’s 2002 hero Golan, who could only manage a sixth in the Japan Cup on his previous start, which came the season before

Of this year’s 11 hopefuls, this trend immediately rules out the Brazilian-bred American raider Hard Buck, Godolphin’s pacemaker Lunar Sovereign and Phoenix Reach, none of whom finished higher than fifth last time.

When Swain was successful in this prestigious event for the second time in 1998, he became the only one of the last 15 winners not to be aged between three and five - he was six.

This does not bode well for the Clive Brittain-trained Warrsan, who at six is considered too old to be entering the winner’s enclosure.

14 of the last 15 King George winners won or finished second earlier in the season - the one anomaly being Pentire, who came third and fourth on his two earlier outings in 1996 .

Vallee Enchantee and Tycoon disappear from the reckoning as both have been able to finish no higher than third on their two starts in 2004.

The winners of 13 of the last 15 renewals had previously raced between one and four times earlier that season. The two that didn’t were Golan and 1994 hero King’s Theatre, who were making their seasonal debut and raced on five occasions respectively previously that term.

Bandari has already had a busy campaign, being seen on a racecourse six times - he is discounted.

The draw is important in any horserace and it is no different here - 14 of the last 15 victorious horses were drawn in stalls two to eight. Irish Derby third Belmez was the only winner to defy this trend emerging from stall 11 in 1990.

This is not good news for High Accolade and Gamut, drawn 10 and 11 respectively, and this pair disappear from further calculations.

Returning to how winners did earlier in the season means Codebreaker has DOYEN as this week’s selection instead of stable companion Sulamani.

The selection has already won this season, putting in a scintillating performance in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot, in line with 12 of the most recent 15 scorers. Sulamani is a very good horse but he has been unable to get his head in front this term.

The fact that Doyen and Frankie Dettori will start their race from stall five is no bad omen either. Swain came out of this stall both years he won in 1997 and the following term, while Montjeu in 2000 and Alamshar last year enjoyed the same berth.
