HUGE ENTRY FOR BLUE SQUARE SHERGAR CUP RACES

All six races that make up the Blue Square Shergar Cup at Ascot on Saturday 7th August have attracted a high number of entries with an overall total of 452, well up on the 368 entered twelve months ago.

The Blue Square Shergar Cup is the world's leading jockeys' competition, pitting six top jockeys representing the Sodexho-sponsored Great Britain & Ireland Team, captained this year by Kieren Fallon, against six from the Dubai Duty Free Rest of the World, captained by Frankie Dettori. There is over £270,000 in prize money on offer, as well as nearly £20,000 in cash awards for the stable staff and leading trainers.

"We are delighted with these entries," commented Ascot's Racing Director, Nick Cheyne.

"It is important that we get 10 runners and 2 reserves in each race to keep the teams balanced, so the bigger the entry, the more certainty there is that we will achieve this. This year we made the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint a handicap for the first time which has seen its entry rise from 57 last year to 72 this time. That is particularly pleasing.

"There are a lot of very high class handicappers in each of the five handicaps, while the two-year-old auction race, the Porthault Shergar Cup Juvenile, has attracted a very strong entry as well. Mind you, with each race worth over £45,000 we would be disappointed if that wasn't the case."

WEAVER AND ROBERTS RETURN AS TEAM SELECTORS

Former jockeys Jason Weaver and Michael Roberts will return in the vital role of team selectors for the Blue Square Shergar Cup. They will be at Ascot for the selection process and draw for mounts on Thursday 5th August when Weaver will select the horses that will represent Sodexho
Great Britain & Ireland and Roberts will pick them for Dubai Duty Free Rest of the World.

Last year Roberts' team started big outsiders after some questioned the wisdom of his selections, but his team defied the odds with a runaway victory. The full line-up of jockeys will be announced next week.

TOMORROW'S JOCKEY CLUB DISCIPLINARY PANEL ENQUIRIES AND APPEALS

10.15am - John Gosden

The Disciplinary Panel of the Jockey Club, on 22nd July 2004, will consider an appeal lodged by John Gosden, the trainer of SILVER GILT, placed second in the Addleshaw Goddard Stakes on 3rd July 2004, against the decision of the Stewards at Sandown Park to find Dane O'Neill, the rider of the winner, ROMANY PRINCE, guilty of careless riding but that ROMANY PRINCE had not improved its placing as a result of the interference and therefore to leave the placings unaltered.

12.30pm - Allan Mackay

The Disciplinary Panel of the Jockey Club, on 22nd July 2004, will hold an enquiry to consider whether or not Allan Mackay, in the light of the undertaking on his application for his Flat Race Jockey's Licence for 2004, has committed a breach of Rule 220 (vii) (a) of the Rules of Racing, by failing to attend one of this year's Flat Jockey's Seminars.

2.15pm - Phil Taylor

The Disciplinary Panel of the Jockey Club, on 22nd July 2004, will hold an enquiry to consider whether or not it should exercise its powers under Rule 2 (v) of the Rules of Racing and exclude Mr Phil Taylor, a bookmaker, from any premises owned, licensed or controlled by the Stewards of the Jockey Club, in respect of his possession and use of a falsified RaceTech identity
card at Stratford on 30th December 2003 and possession and use of a JAGB badge at Bath on 27th April 2004.
