SUMMER PLATE RACEDAY AT MARKET RASEN RACECOURSE RELEASE

3.35 - TOTESCOOP6 HANDICAP CHASE (2m 4f)

A total of 22 entries were confirmed today, at the five-day stage, for the £70,000 TOTESCOOP6 HANDICAP CHASE, the highlight of Saturday's card at Market Rasen, broadcast exclusively on Channel 4, and offering a bumper jackpot of nearly £160,000.

The two and a half mile chase is open to five-year-olds and upwards rated 0 – 145, and among the entrants five are trained by the all conquering Martin Pipe, with ROYAL PREDICA and MONTREAL looking likely runners.

York-based trainer, Noel Wilson, is planning to run the charismatic chaser - LATALOMNE - in the big race explains: "The horse is in good form and has schooled well. After winning at Ripon three weeks ago, we've kept him sweet with a short break and by treating him as an individual. We aim to run and plan to drop him in the field as the trip is our big question mark."

Connections of former Market Rasen course and distance winner - LITTLE BIG HORSE – are looking forward to Saturday, Sue Smith comments: "He seems to love the course and has progressed nicely this season." While Simon Burgoyne, assistant trainer to Andrew Balding, said: "COOL MONTY will probably have a spin tomorrow and take it from there."

Pip Adams, Manager of Market Rasen Racecourse, commented: "We are delighted to have secured such competitive fields at the five-day-stage and would like to thank the Tote for their continual support."

AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT LEAVES GAMBLING LAWS UNCHANGED

(12th July 2004) Betfair today welcomed the announcement of the Australian Federal
Government that it would leave Australia's Interactive Gambling Act 2001 unchanged
following a lengthy review. The decision constitutes another major milestone for Betfair.

The Australian government had been pressured throughout the process of consultation by
commercial interests which were opposed to Betfair's entry into the Australian market. It was
widely recognised that a change in Federal law would make Betfair's application for a licence
to operate from Australia itself much more difficult.

The Federal Government decision, taken following discussion at Cabinet level, allows Betfair
to continue to take bets while it pursues its on-shore licences. It rejects the suggestion that
Betfair's operation raises new questions, as the TABs and their allies had alleged, and
recognises that the issues being fought over are of a commercial nature between existing
players and competitive newcomers.

Betfair has committed to paying all relevant taxes and product fees in Australia. It has been
accruing payments for the Australian horseracing industry since it first covered their product
in February 2003, having stated that it would backdate all payments due when a commercial
deal is eventually signed. Most parties had been awaiting the outcome of the Federal Review
before pursuing any further discussions.

Betfair currently takes bets from Australia as an "exempt wagering operator", under the terms
of the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. Section 8A of that Act specifically excludes any
wagering operator which takes bets on sport or racing from the restrictions imposed on other
forms of gambling. It is under this exemption that both Betfair and the TAB (and any other
sports wagering operator, whether licensed in Australia or not) are allowed to take sport and
horseracing bets from people in Australia.

The exemption existed principally as a result of the TABs lobbying for it in 2001. They had
argued that sports and horseracing wagering on the internet raised none of the questions
raised by online casinos, and should be not be outlawed.

As the law underwent a statutory review two years after its inception, the TABs vehemently
lobbied for the exemption to be removed or changed. Now describing the exemption as a
loophole', they sought to have it altered to block Betfair's UK-licensed operation from taking
bets from people in Australia.

Blocking Betfair offshore would have made Betfair's fight for an on-shore licence considerably
more difficult. The on-shore licence is required to allow a company to market, sponsor, and
operate from within the country.
