CROWD WELL UP

Today’s attendance of 9,289 was 2,068 up (+29%) on last year’s figure of 7,221 for the opening day of the July Meeting.

Lisa Hancock, Managing Director Of Newmarket Racecourses, said: “We are delighted by today’s crowd which is the biggest first-day attendance at the July Meeting for five years.

“Our advance bookings were over 30% up so we were hopeful that there would be plenty of people here today. It has got the meeting off to a good start.”

TOTE TURNOVER
UP 32%

Today’s on-course cash betting turnover with the Tote came to £214,894.40, up £51,918.92 (+32%) on last year’s opening-day total of £162,975.48.

IRON MASK DOES NOT RUN

Iron Mask has been taken out of Thursday’s Darley July Cup by trainer Criquette Head-Maarek after she watched the televised racing from Newmarket. She considers the ground too soft for her charge who will not now travel from France.

PREVIEW OF DARLEY JULY CUP

A field of 20, probably the largest since the race was first staged in 1876 and certainly the largest since the turn of the 20th century, has been declared for the Darley July Cup, the featured Group One six-furlong sprint on the final day of the July Meeting on Thursday.

Four of the 20 are trained by Aidan O’Brien and that quartet is headed by the ante-post favourite Mozart, who made just about all the running to win the Group Three Jersey Stakes over seven furlongs at Royal Ascot last month. This followed another front-running effort when he beat all but stablemate Black Minnaloushe in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, but he was coming to the end of his tether in the closing stages of the Jersey and his trainer indicated at the time that the three-year-old would drop back a further furlong in trip for this race.

Currently vying for favouritism with Mozart is Shibboleth, who let down his admirers at the Royal Meeting when he could beat only two home in the mile Queen Anne Stakes. He ran without a tongue strap on that occasion, but his trainer Henry Cecil re-fitted the strap for Shibboleth’s next appearance and all went according to plan when the colt won the Group Three Hitchins Criterion Stakes over seven furlongs of the July course at the end of last month. Shibboleth will wear the tongue strap again on Thursday.

The July Cup will be the final racecourse appearance for Cassandra Go, who is in foal to Green Desert. She won the Group Two King’s Stand Stakes at the Royal meeting over five furlongs, but has good form over the extra furlong which should not be a problem for her.

A couple of those who finished behind the mare at Ascot take her on again, Vision of Night, who was fourth, and Ishiguru, one of the O’Brien team, who was tenth.

An even bigger pointer from Royal Ascot could be the Group Two Cork and Orrery Stakes over six furlongs, in which Harmonic Way got the better of Three Points by a length. Godolphin’s Three Points meets the winner on the same terms as at Ascot and will be wearing a tongue strap on Thursday.

Tillerman, who finished fourth in the Cork and Orrery after getting anything but a clear run until too late, has also been declared but his trainer Amanda Perrett is waiting on the ground before deciding on a definite challenge.

Misraah, who produced a dramatic late dash to win at Sandown on Saturday, was fifth behind Cassandra Go at Ascot, with Superior Premium, Modigliani (another O’Brien contender) and Pipalong sixth, seventh and eight, and all that quartet, as well as the unplaced Primo Valentino who earlier won Newmarket’s Listed NGK Spark Plugs Abernant Stakes, are taking on the mare again. Freud is the fourth O’Brien representative and it would have been five except that Dietrich was balloted out.

Last year’s runner-up Lincoln Dancer bids to go one better this time and also to take revenge on Mount Abu, who beat him into fourth place when winning the seven-furlong John O’Gaunt Stakes at Haydock last month.

The much-travelled Gorse has won twice in Germany this season, and there is a likely contender from France in Iron Mask, though his trainer Criquette Head-Maarek is another who does not want the ground too soft and she plans to walk the course on Thursday morning. Iron Mask is another traveller as he was successful in Singapore earlier this year.

Volata, who has dropped successfully back to sprinting after trying his luck in the Sagitta 2000 Guineas on the Rowley Mile course in May and won a handicap at Haydock and a Listed race at Newcastle, is another who does not want too much rain, and Enthused is also dropping back in distance after finishing fifth in the Sagitta 1000 Guineas and then eighth in the Coronation Stakes, also over a mile, at Ascot.

DUBAI DOES BETTER

“He did today what we hoped he was going to do when he was beaten first time out at Newbury,” said David Loder after Dubai Destination had justified 1-3 favouritism to take the opener by three and a half lengths from Sohaib.

“The trouble was at Newbury that he was very babyish and running him over six furlongs there did not give him time to realise what he was expected to do. But he has trained very well since then, though Frankie (Dettori) said that he would have benefited from having another gallop on the grass after that Newbury run. It has been so firm that we have been confined to the all weather.

“I was a bit worried when Sohaib was still with him two furlongs out, but Sheikh Hamdan (who owns the runner-up) came round last night and said that his runner in this race was a very nice colt, so I expected him to be thereabouts.

“I don’t know what will happen with him next. He is right up there with the best of the colts we have, and we shall know more when things are a bit more sorted out at the end of this meeting.

“But races like the Champagne at Doncaster and the National Stakes in Ireland are those we would be looking at for him. Frankie says that he will get a mile but still has the speed to win at six furlongs.

“I am very pleased with what he has done here and he is a very nice colt. He is a tall colt and I am sure he can improve from this.”

Dubai Destination was quoted at 25-1 and 20-1 for next year’s Sagitta 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and Vodafone Derby by most of the major firms after the race, though some were more cautious and offered no more than 16-1 for the Guineas.

WINNING QUOTES RACE TWO
H & K COMMISSIONS (BOOKMAKERS) HANDICAP
ARPEGGIO SURPRISES

Arpeggio produced his best form for a long time when outrunning Indian Plume and then holding Bold Raider to spring a 25-1 surprise in the H & K Commissions (Bookmakers) Handicap and then qualifed for the post-race comment by part-owner Edward St George that “the horse is useless, the trainer has done it all.”

The trainer is David (Dandy) Nicholls, who has landed some major touches over the years but said that “I don’t bet” and so had not taken advantage of the big prices on offer about the six-year-old.

Arpeggio is also owned by Lennie Dorji, in whose colours Nicholls sent out Bahamian Pirate to win the Ayr Gold Cup last season at the even bigger price of 33-1, but the trainer has been in such a quandary about the horse that he has even entered him in claimers.

But Nicholls was steering away from such lowly company when he said “I hope we shall be able to run him in the Wiliam Hill Mile at Goodwood. He will get a penatly from this and that should get him into the Goodwood race.

“He has been hard to settle and it was a help when the leader (Derryquin() went off at such a strong pace. They don’t get home if they go off as fast as that, but even then Darryll (Holland) thought that he got to the front a bit too soon.”

Going back a few years, Nicholls recalled riding a lot of winners in Calcutta for H.E. Lhendup (Lennie) Dorji and added that he took over the winner, who was at one time trained by Richard Hannon, “when the owners sent him to me.”

WINNING QUOTES RACE THREE
CHERRY HINTON STAKES
LODER AND DETTORI DOUBLE UP

David Loder and Frankie Dettori completed a short-price double when Silent Honor scrambled home in the Group Two Cherry Hinton by only a short head from Lady High Havens, who she has beaten by a much wider margin when they met here last month.

Bookmakers were not impressed by the performance and there is now 25-1 on offer for the Sagitta 1000 Guineas about the winner with Ladbrokes, who were offering no more than 10-1 about the filly before the race.

The trainer was inclined to blame himself for Silent Honor not being more impressive. “Because of the soft ground I told Frankie to hang on to her and I am sure that was the wrong thing to do; we should have let her use her stride and maybe that is what we shall do with her next time,” he said.

“The races I have in mind for her are the Lowther and the Cheveley Park, though I shall have to talk to Sheikh Mohammed before we reach a decision,” he said. “I was not disappointed with what she did and I blame myself for giving the wrong instructions, and I am sure she is a very good filly.”

CRISFORD & DETTORI
ON SILENT HONOR

Simon Crisford, the Godolphin racing manager, commented: “I think the rain has probably just come at the wrong time for her - she is a fast-ground filly.

“But she has got bags of class and I think the filly who finished second is very good. I think you will see our filly turn out to be top class. We are delighted: “

Frankie Dettori declared: “The ground has changed a lot and it has gone soft. This is a filly with a lovely stride and David ( Loder) said don’t over-do it early on.

“It turned out to be a bit of sprint and she went to win quite well and full praise to Pat’s filly (Lady High Havens) who dug deep and gave me another challenge. I think it came down to the ground, she couldn’t really extend like she did first time out.

“You will see a better filly on good ground. In the mornings she has a lovely stride - she is still on the weak side in her frame but she is a good prospect for next year.

“She went to win the race easily and in the last 50 yards has just got a bit tired in the ground. Luckily the post came in time.”

The jockey also spoke about his first winner of the afternoon - Dubai Destination.

Dettori explained: “He won well - the second was very well fancied. Now we will have to step him up to better company.

“In all my career I have never seen so many good two-year-olds in one stable and every two or three weeks he (David Loder) brings out a better one! He is amazing - an absolute champion of a trainer - every time he takes his horses racing they are spot on and know their job. His record speaks for itself.”

The ground was changed to GOOD TO SOFT after the first race.

Paul d’Arcy, who trains the runner-up, was far from surprised that Lady High Havens had been so close to the winner. “If I had not thought that she would not have been here,” he said. “I am not sure what we shall do with her but she is a serious filly, all the more so if the winner is the best we have seen out so far this year.”

WINNING QUOTES RACE FOUR
PRINCESS OF WALES’S PEARL AND COUTTS STAKES

BREEDERS’ CUP AGAIN
FOR MUTAMAM

Mutamam, running for the first time since he was fourth at the Breeders’ Cup last autumn, booked himself another transatlantic passage with a tenacious defeat of last year’s Princess of Wales’s Stakes winner Little Rock.

“He was ill in the spring, though not as ill as some might leave you to believe,” related the trainer Alec Stewart. “We had been training him to run in Dubai, but then he could not run there, and in April he just lost all his condition.

“He grew a long, hairy coat and looked dreadful because he had a build-up of infection in his stomach. It was not colic and was never life threatening, but it did give us a worry.

“It has been a great team effort from everyone involved and I really am very, very pleased with that.

“He is in the King George but I shall have to talk to Sheikh Hamdan and see what he feels. He may decide that is the way to go, but I am a bit inclined to think about the Irish St Leger, a race I won with Opale in my second season as a trainer.

“He is now a Group 2 winner, which means that he will have to carry that penalty in lower races. The Geoffrey Freer is another race which we shall look at for him, but I very much hope that we shall be able to have another crack at the Breeders’ Cup with him.”

BALDING ADMITS TO ERROR

“She has been working very well, so well in fact that I entered her for the big Tote International Handicap in a couple of weeks’ time,” declared Ian Balding after Velvet Glade had sprung a 16-1 surprise in the fillies’ handicap.

“I then chose this race for her as it was not valuable enough for her to get a penalty for Ascot, but unfortunately she is so low in the handicap at Ascot, she has only 7st 5lb, that without a penalty she will almost certainly not get into it.

“She needs ten or 12 of those above her to come out of the race and I doubt if that will happen. That is a pity as I am sure she is capable of winning a big race off her current mark in the handicap.

“She has had her problems since the spring, when she ran very disappointingly over on the Rowley Mile, but she has been going very well since then.

“I have four or five for her owner-breeder George Strawbridge, who will really have enjoyed that. I used to train this filly’s dam and grandam, and it is a shame that Silla (also owned by George Strawbridge) cannot run in the next race, but she has bruised a foot.”

JANE OF NEWMARKET HANDICAP+

ANOTHER 16-1 SURPRISE

Second season trainer Ralph Beckett trained his first winner at Newmarket when Flying Millie was a second consecutive 16-1 winner on the day as she outran Starbeck and long time leader Macaroon in the first of the two handicap sprints.

“I am thrilled with that, and particularly for Mr (John) Guest (the winner’s owner),” said the trainer. “I inherited her half-sister for him when Peter Walwyn retired and he showed a lot of faith in me to send me this filly.

“She has had her problems, to put it mildly, and it is really since she ran at Ascot last time last month that I have been happy with her. Her last bit of work was very pleasing.

“I was not worried about the ground for her, but she can certainly go on faster ground than this and I am looking forward to her running again when it is firmer.”

WINNING QUOTES RACE SEVEN
NGK SPARK PLUGS SOHAM HANDICAP
NICHOLLS AND HOLLAND DOUBLE UP

David Nicholls and Darryll Holland completed a 285-1 double when Brave Burt followed the success of Arpeggio earlier in the day by taking the five furlong handicap by two and a half lengths from Our Fred.

And the link-up with the previous winner was maintained as Edward St George, who has a share in Arpeggio, runs this winner under his Lucayan Stud banner.

“I would like to think about the Ayr Gold Cup for him,” said St George to the trainer’s wife Alex Greaves, who responded later by saying: ” I expect he will be put in the race, we shall probably have about 30 of the 120 entries!” The stable won the big Scottish sprint last season with 33-1 shot Bahamian Pirate.

“We have had him for a while now, but he is not a sound horse. He is a big, heavy horse and the rain will have helped him,” said the trainer.

“I hope the handicapper does not put him up too much for that, but he is in at York on Saturday and in a big sprint at Ascot later on. He has lots of speed -- he was in front until well inside the final furlong at Newcastle last time -- and he stays six furlongs well,” added Nicholls.

NO GOING CHANGE

The ground for tomorrow remains at

GOOD TO SOFT

“That was the report which I gave at 4pm, which is when I had to make it,” said Clerk of the Course Michael Prosser. “We shall see what happens overnight and in the morning as far as any amendment is concerned,” he added.

CLASSIC DAY OUT AT AYR

Scotland's highest-class Flat race, the Group 3 Sodexho Prestige Scottish Classic, is the feature of Ayr's fixture on Monday, July 16, when a total of £ 63,600 of prize money is on offer.

Top-class runners from across Britain can be expected for the £35,000 contest, which is also Scotland's only Group race. Last year's renewal went to Endless Hall, trained in Newmarket by Luca Cumani.

The five-year-old won the Group 1 Gran Premio di Milano at San Siro in Milan prior to his Ayr success and in May picked up nearly £700,000 in prize money when defeating rivals from around the world in the Group 1 Singapore Airlines International Cup at Kranji Racecourse in Singapore.

The Sodexho Prestige Scottish Classic, sponsored for a second year by Ayr's caterers, is backed by an attractive supporting card that includes the £10,000-added Tote Credit Club Stakes, a Showcase Handicap run over five furlongs at 4.15pm.

The fixture falls during the summer holiday season and a big family crowd is expected with a variety of attractions to keep racegoers of all ages amused.

There will be a falconry display in the parade ring both before and after racing while face-painters, jugglers, stilt-walkers, a bouncy castle and small funfair in the Grandstand Enclosure will all help entertain younger racegoers.

Racegoers will be kept informed by a lavish full-colour racecard, something Ayr has previous only had at the Scottish Grand National and Western Meetings.

Richard Pridham, Ayr's Clerk of the Course and General Manager, said: "Our meeting on Monday, July 16, promises to be one of the highlights of our summer with some top-class performers expected to travel to Ayr for the Group 3 Sodexho Prestige Scottish Classic and supporting races.

"We look forward to welcoming a family holiday crowd and have laid on a wide variety of attractions to make sure everybody has a memorable day out."

Admission prices are Club £16 and Grandstand £8. Children aged 16 and under are admitted FREE, as at all Ayr's meetings, while car and coach parking is also FREE. The first of six races is at 2.15pm.

NEW SPONSORS AT DONCASTER'S FINAL EVENING MEETING

Doncaster's third and final evening meeting of 2001 takes place on Wednesday night (18 July), starting at 6.40 p.m.

The racing programme features a pair of Conditions races - The P & O Logistics Stakes (for two-year-olds over six furlongs) and The Traxpark Classic Stakes (straight mile), with strong support provided by The Electrical Contractors Association Centenary Handicap Stakes (one mile and a half) and The Vyner Novice Fillies' Stakes - a contest for juvenile fillies supported by The European Breeders Fund.

P & O Trans European, a world-class supplier of logistics services in the U.K. sponsor for the first time at Doncaster, as do Helios Properties plc, supporters of The Traxpark Classic Conditions Stakes.

The Electrical Contractors Association celebrate their centenary by sponsoring a series of eight races nationwide, the sixth of which takes place on Wednesday evening. They represent some 2,000 electrical contractors who have a combined turnover of around £3.5 billion. Some 80% of all electrical installation in the country is undertaken by members of the E.C.A., who will provide a specially-commissioned trophy for the successful owner, in keeping with the electrical theme.

Musical entertainment is provided by Hugo & The Hugoenotes, while the supervised creche facility is in use in the Family Enclosure at £1.80 per hour.

SHOWCASE HANDICAP AT BEVERLEY

The Tote Exacta Stakes, a Showcase Handicap contest with £12,000 in prize money, is the principal race at Beverley on Tuesday (17 July). It's a race for three-year-olds over the extended seven furlongs.

Tuesday's programme, which begins at 2.15 p.m., also includes one of the oldest races in Britain - the 116th Year of The Watt Memorial Handicap Stakes, a race for stayers over two miles. This race has existed since a local dignitary, William Watt, bequeathed a fund to the racecourse. His father, Squire Richard Watt, who was based at nearby Bishop Burton, won The St. Leger at Doncaster four times in the early 19th Century with Altisidora (1813), Barefoot (1823), Memnon (1825) and Rockingham (1833).
