Both Shiva and Beat Hollow reportedly worked well this morning but trainer Henry Cecil will wait on the weather before deciding whether either will run in Saturday's Coral Eclipse at Sandown. Shiva is very likely to be Warren Place's representative if she gets her favoured soft ground while no decision has yet been made concerning Beat Hollow's participation.

The ground at Sandown has eased to good, good to soft in places.

The new positions (and their holders) are:

Harmonic Way, the topweight of the record 106 entries for the 2000 Vodafone Stewards' Cup, is aiming for the double, having captured the top six-furlong sprint handicap last year.

The five-year-old, trained by Roger Charlton has 9st 11lb - 19lb more than the 8st 6lb he carried to glory last year - in the £85,000 Vodafone Stewards' Cup which is run at Goodwood on Saturday, August 5.

Harmonic Way's weight and those of the other 105 entries are announced today, Wednesday, July 5. There were 104 entries last year, 83 in 1998, 84 in 1997 and 81 in both 1996 and 1995.

Should he manage to achieve back-to-back wins in one of the betting races of the year, Harmonic Way will be the first horse to achieve the feat since Sky Diver was successful in 1967 and 1968. This season he has already won the Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot.

The Mark Johnston-trained Gaelic Storm, who finished fifth behind the 1998 winner of the Vodafone Stewards' Cup, Superior Premium, on his last outing in the Group Two Cork and Orrery Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, has been allocated 9st 10lb.
The highest weight carried to victory by a horse in the Vodafone Stewards' Cup was 9st 10lb by King's Signet, trained by John Gosden, in 1993 and by the Michael Jarvis-trained Petong in 1984.

Social Harmony, one of two Irish-trained entries in the field who both hail from Dermot Weld's powerful stable, has 9st 9lb, with his stablemate Royal Command allotted a stone less on 8st 9lb.

Kingsclere-based trainer, Ian Balding, successful in the Vodafone Stewards' Cup eight years ago with subsequent triple Group One scorer Lochsong, has two representatives this time. They are Halmahera (9st 6lb), who was second in last year's renewal off 9st 7lb, and Dashing Blue (9st 5lb), who is no stranger to Goodwood having finished third in last year's Group Three King George Stakes at the Festival Meeting. The other placed horse from the 1999 Vodafone Stewards' Cup among the entries is the James Toller-trained Literary Society, third last year, and now with 6lb less on 8st.

John Gosden relies upon the Sheikh Mohammed-owned Strahan (8st 11lb), third in the 2000 Wokingham Handicap, to add to his 1993 success, while Deep Space (9st 5lb), one place behind Strahan in the Wokingham, is one of two Ed Dunlop entries, being joined by the lightly-raced Aljawf (8st 2lb).

David Nicholls won the Vodafone Stewards' Cup in 1982 as a jockey on Soba, and he is responsible for a massive 15 entries. Highest in the weights of these is Further Outlook (8st 10lb) who finished fourth in the Group One Gran Criterium in Italy as a juvenile for Sir Michael Stoute.

Other notable entries include Blue Mountain (8st 2lb), trained by Fulke Johnson Houghton, who won the Vodafone Stewards' Cup Trial at Goodwood on July 2, and the Alan Berry-trained Bolshoi (9st 4lb), winner of the 1998 King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Rod Fabricius, Clerk of the Course & General Manager at Goodwood, said today (July 5): "The record number of entries for the Vodafone Stewards' Cup shows how popular this race is with owners and trainers.

"For the second year running owners and trainers will be able to pick their own draw which adds to build-up for this great handicap. Those horses who do not make the cut for the 30 runners in the Vodafone Stewards' Cup are eligible to run in the consolation race, the £25,000 Stewards' Sprint Handicap, the day before."

Saturday, August 5, 2000, Class B, £85,000 total prize money, 6f, for three-year-olds and upwards. Lowest weight 7st 10lb, highest weight not less than 9st 10lb. Penalties: after July 2, a winner of a race value £6,000 3lb; of two such races, or of one value £9,000 5lb; of three such races, or of one value £12,000 7lb. Entries closed June 21 (106 entries), entries and weights published July 6, first forfeit stage July 18, five-day forfeit stage July 31, 48-hour declaration stage 10am Thursday, August 3. The 42 entries for the Group One Juddmonte International at York on August 22 were revealed today.

The entries for the mile and a quarter contest are headed by Europe's two star four year-olds, Dubai Millennium and Montjeu. Also present among the list are the Vodafone Derby second and third Sakhee and Beat Hollow, who would appear to represent the best of the classic generation. Sendawar, who disappointed behind Dubai Millennium at Ascot is also entered, as is Hardwicke Stakes victor Fruits Of Love. The pick of the fillies would appear to be Kalypso Katie and Melikah, second and third respectively in the Vodafone Oaks, although they both hold alternative entries in the Aston Upthorpe Yorkshire Oaks a day later. Henry Cecil's very useful mare Shiva is also a possibility.

Meanwhile, the Group One Nunthorpe Stakes on August 24 has attracted 38 entries, including Royal Ascot victor Nuclear Debate and Sampower Star who finished second in the behind Superior Premium in the Cork and Orrery. French trainer Robert Collet, who saddled Saint Marine to finish second last year is has Cap Coz as his possible representative this year. Aidan O'Brien has Asanovo, Dietrich and Joplin, all two year olds among his eight entries. Bernstein, Monashee Mountain, Rossini, Van Danzig and Warrior Queen are the remaining entries for the Ballydoyle operation.

Following substantial overnight rain, there are going changes for two of today's meetings.

For this evening's meeting at Epsom the going is now described as good to soft, soft in places, while at Yarmouth the ground is good to firm after a small amount of rain.

National Hunt jockey Rodney Farrant, who quit the saddle in March this year, has submitted an application to the Jockey Club to renew his licence.

The 27 year-old had earlier cited a lack of rides and injuries as the reasons for hanging up his boots but has now stated that the real reason was due to troubles with his marriage.

Farrant, who hopes to be riding again before the end of the month, stated: "There was certainly some truth in what I said about it being a struggle to make money as a jockey not getting many rides, but I was half making excuses because my marriage had gone wrong. I should have been a bigger man and got stuck into the racing, but I let it slip because of my personal problems."

Farrant's biggest successes to date came on Martha's Son in the 1997 Queen Mother Champion Chase and on Princeful in the 1998 Stayers' Hurdle.

Michael Kinane hopes to back in the saddle by the weekend and may partner the Aidan O'Brien-trained Giant's Causeway in the Coral Eclipse on Saturday.

Kinane tweaked a muscle in his back when riding Spinning Top in the Pretty Polly Stakes on Saturday and was forced to miss the ride on Ciro in the Budweiser Irish Derby.

Yesterday Kinane stated: "I decided to take the week off, although I'll know more after I've seen my specialist. It's not hurting and we'll just see how it goes."
