INVESTEC DERBY DAY, EPSOM DOWNS
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
SATURDAY, JUNE 5, 2010
GOING CHANGED THIS MORNING
The going has changed to GOOD TO FIRM, from good, good to firm in places yesterday.
Andrew Cooper, clerk of the course and racing director at Epsom Downs Racecourse, said this morning at 9.30am: “Good to firm is a fair description of the going which just tightened up a bit yesterday during a sunny day.
“The water we put on after racing last night will help maintain the ground at good to firm through today.”
The watering involved putting on three millimetres up the home straight and between the mile and six-furlong poles on the top of hill.
The dolled-off area on the inside rail from the six-furlong pole to the winning post was taken down last night to provide fresh ground for the Investec Derby.
The forecast is for the weather to stay dry and hot. It could be humid, with temperatures of up to 28 degrees Celcius possible.
MORE GOING INFORMATION
The GoingStick reading for the Derby Course was 8.6 at 9.30am today, with the final three furlongs coming in at 8.4, the same as yesterday morning.
The GoingStick reading for the downhill five-furlong course was 8.9 at 9.30am.
This means the ground in the home straight is quicker on the stands’ side with a GoingStick reading of 8.9 there, while it was 8.4 on the far side.
THE QUEEN ARRIVES TO GIVE ROYAL SEAL OF APPROVAL TO INVESTEC DERBY DAY
Investec Derby Day is always special but it wouldn’t be complete with a Royal visitor. Her Majesty The Queen, arguably horseracing’s highest profile participant, arrived on the Epsom Downs just before 1pm to add her own special blend of magic to proceedings.
Wearing a pale yellow outfit emblazoned with a tulip design and matching hat, Her Majesty arrived to cheers from the crowd along the home straight before standing to hear the National Anthem sung by Camilla Kerslake, the 21-year-old protege of Gary Barlow.
Included in the Royal Party today are Jean, Countess Of Carnarvon, Lord and Lady Vestey, Sir Michael and Lady Angela Oswald, the Queen’s racing manager John Warren and his wife Lady Carolyn Warren, who is the daughter of the Queen’s former racing manager Lord Carnarvon.
Also in the party are Sir Alan and Lady Reid, The Lady Elton, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Richards, Wing Commander Andrew Calame RAF and Major Dan Rex.

SNOW FAIRY IN GOOD ORDER AFTER INVESTEC OAKS TRIUMPH
Cristina Patino’s Investec Oaks heroine Snow Fairy is reported to be in fine form after her victory on the Epsom Downs on Friday.
Speaking this morning at 11.30am, trainer Ed Dunlop, who was celebrating his second victory in the Classic following the 2004 win of the great mare Ouija Board, said: “Snow Fairy’s really well. She got back home in good time last night and ate all her food.”
He continued: “She seems to have taken the race well but we’ll give her a little holiday now and have a think about going for the Irish Oaks.”
Snow Fairy’s owner, who is also her breeder operating under the name of Windflower Overseas Holdings Inc, has also tasted success this season with Craven Stakes winner Elusive Pimpernel.
OPEN BUS RIDE A GREAT START TO DERBY DAY
You have to get up early to get one of the best seats in the house on Investec Derby Day.
Number one position in the Lonsdale Stand is head on to Epsom’s finishing straight and just a few metres from the famous winning post. It was bagged this morning by Carol Herschell from Kingston-on-Thames who left home at 8.30am equipped with sun parasol, a picnic hamper and plenty of Factor 15.
“I’ve been coming to the Derby for 48 years since I was 16,” said Carol. “My father brought me the first time and for years we used to go on the Hill, but now we come to the Lonsdale [located on the inside of the course opposite the stands].”
Midas Touch is Carol’s Investec Derby tip, while among her friends were Gary Clarke from Lewisham, who sides with Jan Vermeer.
Open-topped buses are as much a part of the Derby Day scene as horses and jockeys. You don’t have to wear fancy dress to arrive by bus, but many do, including Hayden Wheeler, who with a bunch of mates from London had opted for a ‘cops and robbers’ theme. Hayden’s bright orange suit “is standard Guantanamo Bay issue” he proclaimed, while his colleagues ranged from reincarnations of Robin Hood to Sherlock Holmes.
“We come by bus most years,” said Hayden. “For £90 we get into the races and are supplied food and drink all day. It’s great fun. Bullet Train is my Derby selection.”
Taking a theme from the Harry Potter novels, Iain Mackenzie from nearby Langley Vale was equipped with a ‘sorting hat’. This black trilby, trimmed with freshly printed £20 notes, gave Iain the air of a race-day spiv, and, he claimed, an insight to this year’s Investec Derby winner. “The hat says Hot Prospect,” said Iain, who had joined healthcare colleagues in hiring a bus for the day.
Susan Pett from Walton-on-the-Hill owes her existence to Epsom, for her grandparents, Ellen and William Bridges, met and fell in love on the Downs on Derby Day.
“He offered to give her a lift, and when she said yes he picked her up and carried her away on his shoulders,” said Susan. The year in question has slipped from the family album, but Susan reckons it was towards the end of the 19th Century.
A member of the Ashford Rotary Club who came by open bus, Susan, whose Investec Derby selection is Al Zir, was joined by Shirley Hebron, a fan of Midas Touch. Shirley said: “I’ve only been to one race meeting, and that was a night fixture at Kempton. This is wonderful. I’m so excited - there’s so much to see.”
totesport Betting Update
There is only one Group One winner in today’s Investec Derby (4:00pm), Jan Vermeer, and the Aidan O’Brien-trained colt still looks likely to start favourite for the 231st running of the premier Classic, but you would no longer put your mortgage on it.
“We’re still holding Jan Vermeer at 5/2, but all the interest has been in Rewilding, who was supplemented on Monday. We had Rewilding at 13/2 on Friday, now he’s 5/1, and clear second favourite, and the money is still coming,” said George Primarolo, spokesman for totesport, the official betting partner of Epsom Downs Racecourse.
Rewilding’s prep race for the Investec Derby was in a Listed race at Goodwood on May 19, which he won comfortably. That form has yet to be franked as none of the eight horses behind him has raced since. In the media, the Rewilding fires have been stoked by the support of Pricewise in the Racing Post.
Coordinated Cut, formerly trained by Peter Chapple-Hyam but now with Michael Bell, is the horse for the each-way money with totesport. Although the totesport Dante loser tag applies to the colt as it does to the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Workforce (Coordinated Cut was third to Cape Blanco, one place behind Workforce) it has not deterred punters, and the price has shortened from 25/1 to 20/1.
In the Investec Surefooted Handicap (4:45pm), the John Quinn-trained Recession Proof is all the rage with totesport. With conditional Ian Brennan taking a useful 5lb off, the four-year-old has been backed from 16/1 to 10/1.
In the day’s opener, the Investec Vincent O’Brien Handicap (1:40pm), the James Bethell-trained Arlequin has attracted some interest. Unfancied when he won at York last month, the three-year-old should certainly have no problems with the ground, having won twice when the going was good to firm. Arlequin is now 9/1 from 10/1 with totesport.
In the final event of the Investec Derby Festival, the Investec Distinctive Handicap (5:20pm), the horse for the money is Run For The Hills, trained by John Gosden and ridden by William Buick. It would be some achievement for the young jockey to bookmark the Investec Derby Festival with victories in the opener (Bushman in yesterday’s Investec Diomed Stakes) and the closer. With Run for The Hills now at 10/1 from 12/1 with totesport, it’s clear that somebody thinks it can happen.
Betting Update 2
The support for Rewilding in the Investec Derby has been resisted somewhat by Ladbrokes and Paddy Power, who still have the Godolphin-owned colt at 6/1, whereas Coral, Sky Bet and Victor Chandler, to name but three, are offering the colt at 11/2. Midas Touch, second string for the Aidan O’Brien stable on jockey bookings, would be very well named if he comes up trumps and is as short as 11/2 with William Hill.
On paper, Hot Prospect would seem unlikely to live up to his name in the Investec Derby, but one punter with Victor Chandler believes otherwise, taking the 66/1 on offer to the tune of £1,000 each-way.
Although Verdant disappointed on his last outing at Newbury, the Singspiel colt is clearly expect to be back to his best in the Investec Vincent O’Brien Handicap (1:40pm). Paddy Power, Sky Bet and William Hill have the three-year-old as a solid favourite, at 5/2 from 11/4.
In the Investec Woodcote Stakes (2:10pm), Where’s Romeo, trained by David Brown, has been backed with William Hill and is now 11/2 from 8/1.
Antara, who has done all his racing in Germany, his last outing resulting in a Group Three victory at the famous Hoppegarten track in Berlin. That has persuaded quite a few punters that the four-year-old is capable of winning the Group Three Princess Elizabeth Stakes sponsored by Investec (2:40pm) and the horse is now 9/4, from 5/2 with both William Hill and Paddy Power.
The Investec Entrepreneurial Class “Dash” (3:13pm) look impenetrable, but Coral report some interest in Rocket Rob and have shortened the horse accordingly, to 11/1 from 16/1.
Finally, in the Investec Distinctive Handicap (5:20pm) old-stager Flipando has been backed with Ladbrokes and is now 12/1 from 16/1.

First Race: Investec Vincent O’Brien Handicap - Winner’s Quotes
DANDINO IS A GIVEN
The James Given-trained Dandino duly completed his hat-trick with a two-length victory in the day’s opener, the Investec Vincent O’Brien Handicap, ending an annoying time for the trainer.
“It been a frustrating couple of weeks, we are about 30% placed horses from runners without having a winner. The last seven days we’ve had, I think, five or six placed horses, from 12 to 14 runners without having a winner [Given has had seven placed horses since May 28].
“They’ve been running well but just not winning. We’ve got beaten in two photos in the last week. To come and get off the cold list in that way is quite a relief and quite pleasing,” he said.
The race was run at a slowish tempo, and the result was a packing field in the straight, but jockey Paul Mulrennan felt the race was there for the taking.
“From a furlong out, Paul just thought he was going to win,” said the trainer. “Paul said it wasn’t a very strong early pace. But though it was a muddling pace, he just switched right off.
“I thought some of the races yesterday were run at a very strong pace and I do wondered if they weren’t going to flip and go the other way today. But Paul rode him with tons of confidence. He’s got a lot of confidence in the horse and he’s got a lovely turn of foot,” said Given.
“We’ve made 12,000 people happy today,” he added, referring to the 12,000 members of the Elite Racing Club which own the horse.
Dandino will race next at Royal Ascot in the King George V Handicap, over a mile and a half.
Paul Mulrennan added: “My first ever ride here for Mark Brisbourne won here when I was claiming seven, so it has been a good old track for me.
“He is a good horse and he travelled really well - he is a very balanced horse. They didn’t go very quick but when I asked him, he picked up real good and he has won quite cosily. We think quite a lot of him.
“It’s a great buzz and it doesn’t get any better than this, especially for a northern jockey coming down here - it’s great to have a winner.”

LIFE AND SOUL MISSES OUT ON THE PARTY BUT IS STILL IMPROVING
The consistent Life And Soul ran put in a decent effort to finish runner-up to Dandino by two lengths in the opening Investec Vincent O’Brien Handicap over 10 furlongs and is likely to have his next outing over a greater distance at his local track, Goodwood.
His trainer Amanda Perrett said: “It was an excellent run. He handled the track well and is still a big raw-boned horse and there’s still a little way to go with him yet. He’s had three quite quick races in succession and we might go for a handicap at Goodwood, he’s probably ready for a step up to a mile and a half.”
Owner Khalid Abdulla, who is doubly represented in today’s feature race, the Investec Derby, by Bullet Train and Workforce, also had two runners in the opening contest with Verdant finishing third and Power Series fourth.
Lord Grimthorpe, racing manager Abdulla, said: “Verdant didn’t get the clearest run but he has run a decent race - he just couldn’t get through.
“Power Series came from a wide draw but ran on well late. He ran a really solid race.”
Her Majesty the Queen also had two representatives, Fine Sight and Quick Reaction, who were fifth and sixth respectively.
John Warren, racing manager to The Queen, said: “Just to have a runner at Epsom on Derby Day is great fun. Fine Sight got on the wrong leg, but both he and Quick Reaction ran well.”
GOING AFTER FIRST RACE
ON THE FAST SIDE OF GOOD SAY JOCKEYS
After the running of the first race, the Investec Vincent O’Brien Handicap, there was virtual unanimity among jockeys that the ground rode on the fast side of good.
Paul Mulrennan, rider of the winner Dandino, said: “It’s a bit quick down the back, but lovely ground on the straight.”
Edie Ahern, rider of the runner-up Life And Soul, said: “Perfect. Similar to yesterday.”
Ryan Moore, rider of third-placed Verdant, commented: “Fast ground.”
William Buick, who partnered the fourth Power Series, said: “Good to firm.”
Paul Hanagan, rider of unplaced Our Joe Mac, said: “Fast but safe.”
Jimmy Fortune, rider of unplaced Constant Contact, said: “Firm.”
Philip Robinson, rider of unplaced Arlequin, commented: “Fast.”
Jamie Spencer, rider of unplaced Gallant Eagle, said: “On the fast side of good.”
Martin Dwyer, rider of unplaced Paintball, said: “Good fast ground.”

YAWN - IT’S ALL SO EASY FOR SLEEPY AWARD
The famous Tabor, Magnier, Smith colours were carried to an easy victory by High Award in the Listed Investec Woodcote Stakes.
A 425,000gns yearling, High Award won his first race, a maiden at the Curragh earlier this year, but was then beaten twice. Fozzy Stack, representing his father, Tommy, who trains and bred the winner, said: “We were quite sore [hard] on him to get him fit for the Curragh first time and then we probably did the wrong thing and were a bit easy on him.
“He needed the race at Cork [when second] and again in the Marble Hill Stakes [at the Curragh], but that probably just put him right for today.
“He’s a very laid-back horse. Since he’s come over here, he’s done nothing but eat, sleep and drink. He was sleeping an hour before the race - nothing bothers him.
“He’s well balanced, not over big, and he’s had plenty of experience, and certainly more than some of the horses in this race.
“I should think Royal Ascot will be next for him - we’ll talk to the owners and Johnny Murtagh and see what they think and how he fits in with other plans. The Coventry, Windsor Castle or Norfolk are all possibles.”
Winning jockey Johnny Murtagh, said: “He travelled very smoothly, handled the track well, went through the race easily and stayed on nicely all the way to the line. He won well.”
SECOND RACE PLACED QUOTES
INVESTEC WOODCOTE STAKES (LISTED)
ASCOT NEXT AS GOLD TAKES SILVER
Trainer Michael Dods feels there is better to come from Dubawi Gold after the colt, who made a winning debut 10 days ago, finished second to High Award in the Investec Woodcote Stakes.
“He just didn’t handle the track and that was my concern going into the race because he’s still pretty green. You could see him struggling down the hill,” said Dods. “The winner kicked on and got a couple of lengths out of us before we got into it.
“All being well he’ll go to Royal Ascot for the Coventry Stakes and the track should suit him more there.”
Richard Fahey, trainer of third-placed Premier Clarets, said: “We’re pleased with his run but it was a really messy race. They didn’t go any kind of gallop and he was just too keen early on.”
BANS FOR MOORE AND BUICK
Jockeys Ryan Moore and William Buick both picked up two-day bans following the opening Investec Vincent O’Brien Handicap.
Moore was found guilty of careless riding in that he manoeuvred his mount Verdant towards the rail when insufficiently clear, causing interference to Arlequin. Moore’s ban takes effect on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 22 and 23.
Buick was found guilty of careless riding in that he allowed his mount Power Series to hang towards Quick Reaction. His ban takes effect on Sunday and Monday, June 20 and 21.
FALLON STUCK IN TRAFFIC
Jockey Kieren Fallon is currently stuck in traffic.
His mount in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes (2.40pm), Please Sing, will be ridden by Alan Munro.

Winning trainer:-Name: Stack, Thomas Brendan Date of Birth: 15/11/45, Moyvane, Co Kerry Trains at Thomastown Castle, Golden, County Tipperary Background: comes form a farming family who were not particularly involved in racing. Tommy soon developed a keen interest in riding and hunting, and his passion was fuelled through his friendship with school friend Barry Brogan, whose father trained at Rathfeigh. After a chance meeting with veteran handler Bobby Renton, who was looking for potential jumpers in Ireland, Tommy followed the trainer back to his Ripon yard in 1965 and the young jockey soon established himself as a very able jockey, turning professional in 1967 and twice becoming champion jockey in 1974/5 and 1976/7. His finest hour in the saddle came in the 1977 Grand National, when he rode Red Rum to an historic third victory. A terrible accident in the parade ring at Hexham in late 1977 resulted in a smashed pelvis and precipitated his premature retirement from riding the following year. After a spell as a partner with the Coolmore operation, Tommy took out a professional licence to train in 1988, having been successful as a permit holder with smart sprinter Northern Express for the previous two seasons. His first major success came when Kostroma, owned by his former Coolmore partner Robert Sangster, won the Beverly D Stakes at Arlington in September 1992. He teamed up with Sangster once again two years later to win the English 1,000 Guineas with Las Meninas and recorded a second Classic success four years later in the Irish equivalent with Tarascon, who had previously been successful in the Moyglare Stud Stakes as a two-year-old. But Tommy ended the year in hospital with Menigitis and pneumonia, which resulted in him spending 13 days in a coma and three months in hospital. The infection also cost him much of his hearing and his sense of balance, and meant that training horses had to take a back seat while Tommy focused on his recovery. Recent seasons have seen Tommy enjoy a resurgence as a trainer, with his son Fozzy becoming his assistant and the pair forming a formidable partnership. ANTARA PROVES TO BE EXCITING ADDITION TO GODOLPHIN’S RANKS
German recruit Antara made her first outing for Godolphin a winning one when landing the Group Three Princess Elizabeth Stakes (sponsored by Investec) in eye-catching fashion on Investec Derby Day.
The four-year-old daughter of Platini burst into the lead several furlongs from home and held on gamely to win by a neck from the fast-finishing French raider Reggane.
Winning trainer Saeed bin Suroor said: “She’s a big filly and she has plenty of speed. She’s only about 90 per cent fit today so she should improve from this race.
“She will most likely go to Royal Ascot, maybe for the Windsor Forest Stakes, but we’ll see how she comes out of this first.”
Antara won her last three races for her former trainer Roland Dzubasz last season before switching to Godolphin.
Her winning jockey Frankie Dettori, who rides Rewilding for Godolphin in the Investec Derby, added: “I want to be here in an hour and 15 minutes! I was trying to keep her together and I was never happy on her. I knew Gerald was coming but I thought just keep her balanced and get her to the line and not do anything flash.
“She has done it well under a penalty and she is a good filly.
“She had been working well and we came here with some confidence. She didn’t really enjoy running downhill and I had to keep her together.
“I could hear Gerald coming but every time I gave her a backhander I lost a bit of momentum so I had to push her out to the line.
“She is nice filly, winning under a penalty, and the Windsor Forest Stakes at Royal Ascot could be a target for her.
“All her best form in Germany is on softer in Germany, but she seemed to enjoy the ground today.”

BUTLER ON ATTACK WITH PACHATTACK
Trainer Gerard Butler defended his filly Pachattack from criticism by the media after she ran a fine race to be third in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes sponsored by Investec.
Pachattack has won just once in 13 races, but she has put up some good efforts in defeat, and Butler said: “She’s certainly capable of winning a Listed race, and although you guys in the media keep criticising her she’s a very genuine filly who tries her hardest.
“I’m very pleased with her run, although it would have been nice to finish closer. She got carried a bit wide, but Ryan [Moore] says she’s still improving.
“I’ll speak to Michael [the filly’s owner, Michael Deegan], but I should think we’ll give her a holiday now and try for a Listed race later in the season.”
Reggane, the sole French runner at this year’s Investec Derby meeting, finished second, beaten a neck, for trainer Alain de Royer Dupre. The filly’s owner, Jurgen Winter, said: “We thought we could win today. She is in really good shape again now, although she wasn’t at the end of last year.
“Frankie [on the winner Antara] made it a good race and when he took the lead perhaps we were not prepared. He was difficult to catch and Reggane always arrives a little bit late.
“We were beaten by a good horse, so it’s not so bad.”

BERTOLIVER SHINES
The Stuart Williams-trained Bertoliver sprang a 33/1 shock under locally-born rider Jack Mitchell in the Investec Entrepreneurial Class ‘Dash’.
“Epsom has been a lucky course for me and I won this a couple of years ago with Hogmaneigh,” said Williams. “It was always the plan to jump out and get the rail. I had a good walk of the track yesterday and thought the rail was an advantage, especially as the other horses with speed were drawn wide. I think that just made the difference. On his best form and with that draw I thought he had a chance.”
Mitchell’s saddled slipped in the last few yards of the race and said: “I felt my saddle slip about 10 yards before the line - I felt it go with my left leg and I slanted over to the left of the horse - but luckily he was good enough and I could pull him up.
“The plan was always to try and make the running as soon as I could and I had a lucky draw in 15. I had to bounce him out and get a nice position early. I just had that little bit extra to kick and we probably nicked it.
Mitchell, whose father Philip trained in Epsom, first rode at the track in the Shetland Derby aged 15 and said: “I grew up in Epsom and there is always such a buzz to ride a winner here. It’s a real thrill.”

SUBSTITUTE DURCAN JUST DENIED ON HAWKEYETHENOO
Ted Durcan, substituting for the traffic-delayed Kieren Fallon (who arrived in the weighing room as the horses were loading) on the well-backed 5/1 favourite Hawkeyethenoo was denied an unexpected Investec Derby Festival winner, when 33/1 outsider Bertoliver beat his mount by a neck, despite Jack Mitchell’s saddle slipping on Bertoliver in the last 50 yards of the five-furlong dash.
Durcan was delighted with his ride maintaining as he returned that the horse “would have won that race anywhere else”.
Jim Goldie junior, assistant trainer to his father, Jim senior, fielded the inevitable question after the race. Would Kieren in the saddle have made a difference?
“No, I don’t think it would have. I suppose you never know, but Ted gave him a very good ride. We just didn’t quite get there.
“The ground was perfect for him, but it may be that he’s just a bit better at six furlongs,” said Goldie junior.
The horse will now go for the Wokingham at Royal Ascot, a fortnight today. “That’s the plan and he’s still a well handicapped horse,” added the assistant trainer.

ROCKET ROARS HOME BUT HAS TO SETTLE FOR THIRD IN DASH
Rocket Rob is well-named for a sprinter and ran a good race to finish third over the fastest five furlongs in the world in the Investec Entrepreneurial Class ‘Dash’.
Held up early on, he came home with a great burst to finish a neck and a length behind Bertoliver and Hawkeyethenoo.
Trainer Marco Botti said of the four-year-old: “He came from off the pace and was just a bit unlucky, but handled the track well.
“I think a stiff five furlongs is probably his best trip but he’s very consistent and we’re pleased with his performance.”

Workforce
Workforce is the third foal of the unraced Soviet Moon, a full-sister to Racing Post Trophy and St Leger winner Brian Boru. The strapping home-bred son of King's Best was soon given the nickname Sefton at Sir Michael Stoute's Freemason Lodge Stables after the police horse injured in the 1982 Hyde Park bombings. He made his debut in a seven-furlong maiden at Goodwood on September 23, when he quickened impressively to record an emphatic six-length triumph over the Ralph Beckett-trained Oasis Dancer. The manner of his victory looked all the more impressive after the runner-up went on to win the lucrative Tattersalls Timeform Million at Newmarket the following month, but connections decided to forego Workforce's raft of entries in the autumn and give him time to strengthen up over the winter. Despite featuring prominently in the markets for both the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas and the Investec Derby, Workforce missed the Newmarket Classic after taking a while to come to hand and connections focused on aiming him at a Derby Trial. After missing his intended reappearance in the Classic Trial at Sandown, Workforce finally made his eagerly awaited seasonal return in the Group Two totesport Dante Stakes at York on May 13 - a race won by Stoute's previous Investec Derby scorers Shahrastrani (1986) and North Light (2004). Sent off a well-supported 2/1 chance for the extended 10-furlong contest, Workforce was far from disgraced on only his second start as he stayed on to take second, three and a quarter lengths behind the impressive winner Cape Blanco. Workforce was given the go-ahead for the Investec Derby following a racecourse gallop at Lingfield on May 26 and today, starting at 6/1, he was the runaway seven-length winner of the Investec Derby in course-record time of 2m 31.33s, beating the record of 2m 32.31s set by Lammtarra in 1995. Workforce becomes the first horse beaten in the Dante Stakes to come on and win the Investec Derby. Race Record: Starts: 3; Wins: 2; 2nd: 1; 3rd: -: Win & Place Prize Money: £807,346
Khalid Abdulla
Prince Khalid Abdulla, who prefers to be known just as Mr Abdulla on the racecard, is a first cousin to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. He owns extensive racing and breeding interests in America, Britain and Ireland. A businessman presiding over a huge international conglomerate known as "Mawared", he developed a love for British racing during the 1960s when renting a house in London and, with the help of former trainer Humphrey Cottrill, had his first winner on May 14, 1979, when Charming Native scored at Windsor. Born in Taif, Saudi Arabia, in 1937, Abdulla has been one of the most successful owner-breeders in Europe in the past four decades and is the only current owner to have owned and bred the winners of all five British Classics - his winners being Investec Derby (1990 Quest For Fame, 1993 Commander In Chief, 2010 Workforce), Investec Oaks (1997 Reams Of Verse), 2000 Guineas (1980 Known Fact, 1986 Dancing Brave, 1993 Zafonic), 1000 Guineas (1999 Wince, 2010 Special Duty) and Ladbrokes St Leger (1991 Toulon). He has won most of the other major European races such as the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe with Rainbow Quest (1985), Rail Link (2006) and the legendary Dancing Brave (1986), who was an unlucky loser in the Investec Derby. Abdulla also races with great success in France and the United States, where under the Juddmonte Farms banner he won a first Triple Crown race in 2003 with Empire Maker in the Belmont Stakes. In 2003 his greatest successes in Europe came with star sprinter Oasis Dream, winner of the July Cup at Newmarket and Nunthorpe Stakes at York and French Oaks heroine Nebraska Tornado, while American Post was triumphant in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Grand Criterium) at Longchamp and the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster, helping Abdulla to become champion owner in both Britain and France, while he also finished third in the USA owners' championship that year. American Post went on to Classic success in the French 2,000 Guineas in 2004 and Intercontinental gave Abdulla a second Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf in 2005, following full-sister Banks Hill three years earlier. Abdulla's French-trained horses again led the way in 2006, with Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Rail Link proving the highlight. In 2007, Juddmonte Farms bred 27 individual Group/Stakes winners of 33 races, including Zambezi Sun, who wore the famous Abdulla colours to victory in the Group One Grand Prix de Paris, while in 2008 Promising Lead took the Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh, Proportional won the Prix Marcel Boussac and African Rose landed the Ladbrokes Sprint Cup. Midday, winner of the Group One Nassau Stakes at Goodwood and runner-up in the Investec Oaks, added victory in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf last season, while Twice Over captured the Emirates Airlines Champion Stakes. Special Duty was crowned champion two-year-old filly after her scintillating win in the Group One Electrolux Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket, while Spanish Moon was a Group One winner in France. This season Special Duty has claimed both the English and French 1,000 Guineas with the filly awarded both races in the stewards' room after suffering interference while today Workforce became his third Investec Derby winner. Abdulla is an honorary Jockey Club member and his daughter was married to the late Prince Fahd Salman, owner of 1991 Derby victor Generous. Sir Michael Stoute
Born in Barbados on October 22, 1945, where his father was chief of police, Michael Stoute came to Britain in 1965 to nurture his love of racing. He joined Pat Rohan at Malton before moving to Newmarket three years later to work for Doug Smith and then Tom Jones. Stoute took out a public licence to train in 1972, recording his first success that year when Sandal won at Newmarket on April 28. Since then he has risen to the top of his profession and has been champion trainer 10 times - in 1981, 1986, 1989, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2010. Stoute has won the Investec Derby at Epsom Downs five times - with Shergar in 1981, Shahrastani in 1996, Kris Kin in 2003, North Light in 2004 and Workforce in 2010 - making him the most successful current trainer in the premier Classic. The year 2000 was memorable for Stoute when his horses included 2000 Guineas winner King's Best and Kalanisi, winner of the Breeders' Cup Turf and Champion Stakes while in 2001 Golan gave Stoute his fifth 2000 Guineas. A terrific 1997 was headed by the two older horses Singspiel and Pilsudski. Four Group One successes went Pilsudski's way - the Coral-Eclipse, Irish Champion Stakes, Emirates Airline Champion Stakes and Japan Cup, while Singspiel won the Dubai World Cup, the Coronation Cup and the Juddmonte International. He has won the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas five times with Shadeed (1985), Doyoun (1988), Entrepreneur (1997), King's Best (2000) and Golan (2001). His long list of big-race successes also includes the StanJames.com 1000 Guineas (twice), St Leger (once), King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (four times), Investec Oaks (twice), the Irish Derby (three times), Irish Oaks (six times), Irish 1,000 Guineas and Irish 2,000 Guineas as well as many other races across the globe. Stoute, who was knighted in 1998 for his services to sport and tourism in Barbados, trains at Freemason Lodge, Newmarket. The highlight of the 2009 for Stoute came when he saddled the first three home in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes sponsored by Betfair at Ascot - Conduit, Tartan Bearer and Ask - which played a significant part in him becoming champion trainer for the 10th time. Ryan Moore
Ryan Moore, who was born on September 18, 1983, was champion apprentice in 2003 with 59 winners and champion jockey just three years later in 2006, when he recorded 182 victories. He comes from a family steeped in racing history. His late grandfather Charlie was a trainer, Sussex-based dad Gary, a former jump jockey, is a successful trainer under both codes, while mum Jayne was an accomplished amateur rider, as was his aunt Candy Morris. His older brother Jamie is a successful jump jockey while his sister Hayley has also ridden a winner under Rules. His youngest brother, Joshua, has followed his siblings into a riding career and is currently an amateur. Ryan Moore's career began over hurdles, when making a winning debut as an amateur on Mersey Beat at Towcester on May 15, 2000. His first major success on the Flat came as a 5lb claimer when he captured the 2002 Cesarewitch at Newmarket on the Martin Pipe-trained Miss Fara. He is now first rider to Sir Michael Stoute and has been twice champion jockey as well as champion apprentice. He enjoyed an initial Group One success on Notnowcato in the 2006 Juddmonte International and partnered the same horse to victory in the 2007 Coral-Eclipse, when, showing commendable enterprise, he came wide into the straight and raced alone on the stands' side on faster ground. Moore suffered a complex fracture of his right arm following a fall at Lingfield on March 16, 2007, and missed three months of that season as a result. However, he still finished third in the jockeys' championship and regained his title in 2008 when he won the Ladbrokes St Leger and Breeders' Cup Turf on Conduit. Last season he was champion jockey for a third time with 179 victories and won the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes on Conduit. Moore also rode Conduit to success in a second Breeders' Cup Turf and landed further Group One victories in the Investec Coronation Cup on Ask, the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud on Spanish Moon and the Prix Maurice de Gheest on King's Apostle. He recorded his first success in a British Classic when he partnered Snow Fairy to victory in the 2010 Investec Oaks yesterday and today added the Investec Derby to his CV with Workforce delivering a breathtaking seven-length victory. He is the first jockey to win the Investec Oaks and the Investec Derby in the same season since Kieren Fallon in 2004. Investec Derby Record: 2005 Unfurled (7th), 2006 Best Alibi (6th), 2008 Tartan Bearer (2nd), 2009 Black Bear Island (10th), 2010 WORKFORCE (WON)

FIFTH RACE WINNING QUOTES - INVESTEC DERBY (GROUP ONE)
EASY WORK FOR FORCE
Many hoped a new star would emerge in this year’s Investec Derby and 6/1 shot Workforce proved just that as he stormed home to finish seven lengths clear of 100/1 outsider At First Sight.
It was a fifth win in the premier Classic for trainer Sir Michael Stoute as Prince Khalid Abdulla’s colt scored in a time of 2 minutes and 31.33 seconds, beating the previous race record set by Lammtarra in 1995.
Champion jockey Ryan Moore, who won a first British Classic 24 hours earlier on Snow Fairy in the Investec Oaks, became the first rider since Kieren Fallon in 2004 to win both Epsom Classics in the same season.
“He was seriously good today,” said Stoute. “He’s got a great temperament and I’m thrilled for Prince Khalid and Ryan, who always had a lot of confidence in the horse.
“They seem to get sweeter as time goes on, it feels better every time! I’d like to sit down and watch it again later on but it was an exhilarating display.
“The thing about horses beaten in the Dante not winning here was a rubbish statistic and that didn’t bother me.
“Things didn’t go right for him earlier in the year because I’d wanted to give him two races beforehand and then things didn’t work out at York. But that doesn’t bother me now.
“I was under no pressure to run him here and wouldn’t have run him unless Ryan and I thought he had a real chance.
“The Dante run didn’t go as we wanted - it was unsatisfactory - but he was seriously good today, wasn’t he?
“I am thrilled for Ryan. He has gone bang, bang and he has got a great temperament. When he missed the St Leger ride on Conduit, I wanted to get the monkey off his back. I am also thrilled for Prince Khalid. He’s a great supporter of the stable and, more importantly, of European racing and all over the world.”
MOORE THE MERRIER AFTER DERBY
Ryan Moore was delighted to complete the Investec Oaks/Investec Derby double and said: “To me it’s the most important race, it’s a special day and it’s been really nice to get a great reception from my family, friends and weighing-room colleagues.
“He travelled very smoothly and the gap opened up beautifully. He showed great acceleration and I was actually in front sooner than I wanted to be. He quickened up really well and it was a great performance. It’s a long way up that straight.
“My horse travelled beautifully. I got a bump at the top of the hill and had to take my time. It opened up beautifully and, when I asked him to quicken, he really accelerated.
“From the three-furlong pole, he just accelerated and he really showed a good of foot. For a big horse on fast ground on a track that doesn’t suit him, it was a good performance and I just hope that there is more to come.
“He quickened up really well and he just kept extending. His stamina and class was enough. He is a real good horse and I am delighted.
“The boss prepared him beautifully and I was expecting him to run well but I was just worried about the ground. He has improved since the Dante but is a very laidback character and just needed that run to wake him up.”
“I got there earlier than I would have ideally liked on a horse with his style of running and I was a little bit hard on him so I hope that he comes out of the race in good shape.
“This is the most important race for me and it’s great to win it for the boss and Prince Khalid.”
Owner-breeder Prince Khalid Abdulla said: “Like everybody, I am delighted. It is a very good thing - I have won the Derby before but this is special. He is a wonderful horse - we have seen that now.”
Investec Derby - Press Conference Quotes
‘HE’S WON ONE, HE’LL WANT TWO DERBYS’
Jockey Ryan Moore will never be a crowd entertainer, but his brilliance in the saddle has given him a growing number of racing fans.
After another brilliant ride on runaway Investec Derby winner Workforce, Moore was given rousing applause when stepping forward to receive the winning jockey’s trophy.
He said: “Workforce travelled beautifully and did the job well. I’ve had a great reception from so many people, not least my family and friends. It’s a really special day and one I’ll remember for a long time.”
Paying tribute to his jockey, winning trainer Sir Michael Stoute said: “I’m particularly delighted for Ryan, who has put a lot of effort into this horse. He’s got a lot of natural talent and a very good racing brain and he’s ambitious - it’s a joy to have him around. The Derby is the race he most wanted to win, and having done that he’ll want to win the next one.”
Of Workforce, who was home-bred by his owner, Prince Khalid Abdulla, and is a son of Darley stallion King’s Best, Sir Michael said: “On the racecourse he’s always looked brimful of promise, and he won his first race very easily, but things have been a little bit frustrating this spring. He’s a big fellow and it was cold and he wasn’t thriving in it - he had a dirty scope and it got us behind a tight schedule. The Derby is a tight schedule. That said, he’s a very straightforward horse and very laid back.
“We knew the Dante Stakes [in which he was second] had pulled him together a lot and Ryan was very confident about the horse after we took him to Lingfield [for a pre-Investec Derby gallop] and he cornered so well.
“We’ve paid a lot of attention to the horse and there’s been a lot of teamwork, but so much depended on the work out at Lingfield. From Ryan’s point of view it was important that the horse went downhill and tight left and he really gave him a squeeze coming down the hill.
“It was a one-off at York [in the Dante] where the bit pulled through his mouth, so we came here hopeful, but it proved an outstanding display.”
Asked for his emotions at winning a fifth Investec Derby, Sir Michael said: “It’s one of the great feelings because this is one of the great races, if not the greatest of them all. In the final two furlongs I just hoped Ryan hadn’t gone too soon.”
Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to Prince Khalid, said: “It’s been a long time since the Prince’s last Derby winner, which was Commander In Chief in 1993, and he’s absolutely chuffed. When Ryan got off the horse after the Dante Stakes he said, ‘don’t be disappointed, because I’m not’ and that gave us a lot of confidence.
“I always talk to Sir Michael before making plans for the horses, but you don’t need to be a clairvoyant to see that the Irish Derby would be a logical race for him.
“As a young horse he was certainly big, but a grand mover. He went into training normally, and he’s progressed. Some big horses go backwards [in condition] for a while, but he never did, and at home, when we broke him in, he was always strengthening.”
Fifth race - The Investec Derby - Placed quotes
NO WINNER FOR O’BRIEN BUT HIS TRIO FINISH IN FIRST FIVE
Despite fielding three runners, including the 9/4 favourite Jan Vermeer, Investec Derby glory eluded Ballydoyle trainer Aidan O’Brien but only just: his runners finished second, fourth and fifth, with 100/1 outsider At First Sight, essentially performing a pacemaking role, setting a fierce gallop and staying on well to grab the runner-up spot seven lengths behind Workforce, who won in course record time.
“Yes, I’m pleased, absolutely,” conceded O’Brien. “You’ve got to be pleased with that. They were all there and the second horse [At First Sight] stayed well.”
Ridden by Seamie Heffernan, At First Sight was well clear of the chasing pack turning for home until champion jockey Ryan Moore unleashed Workforce whose decisive move changed the face of the race within a matter of strides.
Describing his mount as “very genuine”, Heffernan added: “I’ve been beaten twice now, on a favourite (Fame And Glory) and a wild outsider. I suppose experience on the track helps and they let me go. But Aidan O’Brien trains him, you know, so he’s going to be good.”
The Mahmood Al Zarooni-trained Godolphin runner Rewilding took third, finishing just half a length behind the runner-up.
His jockey, Frankie Dettori, said: “He stayed on well and I could see him being a St Leger horse.”
Johnny Murtagh, whose mount Jan Vermeer lost two shoes during the race but still managed to take fourth place, said: “I was in front of Ryan Moore, we turned in upsides, we went down the inside and he quickened up. My horse just didn’t give me a good feel today.”
Saeed bin Suroor’s challenger Al Zir took sixth place and the trainer stated: “He’s still a big baby and I think he’s more a horse for the future.”
He continued: “I think later in the season he’ll be a better horse. Kieren (Fallon) said he was happy with him, with the way he finished his race. I think a mile-and-a-quarter or a mile-and-a-half is no problem for him, he’s definitely not a St Leger horse.”
JOCKEY REACTIONS INVESTEC DERBY - THIRD TO 12TH
Frankie Dettori on the third Rewilding: “It was a great run - he did not have the gears to go with the winner but stayed on well and will be a lovely St Leger horse.”
Johnny Murtagh, who partnered the fourth, 9/4 favourite Jan Vermeer, declared: “He probably did not handle the track. As we turned the corner, I was upsides Ryan (Moore on the winner Workforce). Then Ryan quickened up and we ended up going up and down on the spot
“My horse never gave me a good feel and I was not confident at any stage. When Ryan kicked I tried to go with him but was not able to.”
Colm O’Donoghue, the rider of the fifth Midas Touch, said: “He has run well but needs a more galloping track.”
Kieren Fallon, rider of the sixth Al Zir, said: “He is still a big baby. He will be a very good horse - he just needs time.”
Jamie Spencer rode the seventh Coordinated Cut and declared: “Coordinated Cut ran OK.”
Ahmed Ajtebi, who partnered the eighth Buzzword, said: “I am so happy with the way my horse has run. I have ridden him in America, France and England.
“He stayed the trip and was in good form but I don’t think the track and the ground helped him. He would be better on a more level track but I am looking forward to riding him again.”
Philip Robinson, the partner of ninth Hot Prospect, said: “It was a little quick for my horse. He will probably be better going back to a mile and quarter.”
William Buick, the jockey on the 10th Azmeel, said: “He did too much early and did not get home.”
Michael Hills, on the 11th Ted Spread, said: “It was a very solidly run race and he has run a good race. From the top of the hill, it was a man’s race and the best horse won.”
Tom Queally, the rider of the 12th Bullet Train, remarked: “I got into a nice position and a nice rhythm but on the hill I was niggling away The ground was quicker than at Lingfield.”
TODAY’S INVESTEC DERBY - KEY POINTS
- Workforce won today in a course-record time of 2m 31.33s - beating the previous record of 2m 32.31s set by Lammtarra in the 1995 Derby.
- Sir Michael Stoute is now the most successful current trainer in the Investec Derby with five wins - Shergar (1981), Shahrastani (1986), Kris Kin (2003), North Light (2004) and Workforce (2010). Henry Cecil is next best with four victories. The all-time record is seven victories, achieved by Robert Robson, John Porter and Fred Darling.
- It was a third Investec Derby victory for owner Khalid Abdulla following Quest For Fame (1990) and Commander In Chief (1993). The most successful current owner in the Investec Derby is the present Aga Khan, who has enjoyed four wins.
- The seven-length victory achieved by Workforce today is the third greatest margin of victory in the Investec Derby’s history. Troy in 1979 and Slip Anchor in 1985 also won by this margin. The largest winning distance was 10 lengths, set by the Stoute-trained Shergar in 1981.
- Ryan Moore is the first jockey to win the Investec Oaks and the Investec Derby in the same season since Kieren Fallon in 2004.
CROWD UP
The paid attendance at Epsom Downs on Investec Derby Day was up compared to last year with a total estimated crowd, including those on the Hill, of over 100,000 people.
Rupert Trevelyan, Managing Director of Epsom Downs Racecourse, said: “We have had a wonderful crowd and there has been a real carnival atmosphere today. We’ve all seen a very good Investec Derby winner in Workforce.
“It has been the greatest day of my life - my first Investec Derby and I have been introduced to the Queen.”
TOTESPORT REACTION TO INVESTEC DERBY - BOOKIES LEFT HAPPY AS WORKFORCE FOILS HUGE FRANKIE GAMBLE
Workforce careered away with this afternoon's Investec Derby at Epsom, not only smashing the track record but also foiling a huge gamble on Frankie Dettori's mount Rewilding in the process.
Ryan Moore completed a famous Investec Derby/Oaks double after winning the fillies’ classic yesterday on Snow Fairy and turned the race into a procession as the 6/1 shot stormed away from the field to record a seven-length victory. Ballydoyle pacemaker At First Sight finished in second, half a length in front of the gambled-on Rewilding who had been backed into 9/2 from an early morning price of 7/1.
“After the plunge on Jan Vermeer a week ago, the public lumped on Rewilding as if defeat was out of the question and there would have been a multi-million pound payout industry-wide if either of those two had won,” said totesport spokesman George Primarolo. “However, Ryan Moore has ridden to the rescue and we'll be raising a glass to the champion jockey this evening.”
Epsom's official charity Sparks are also better off to the tune of £7,250 after John Virgo plumped for Workforce at odds of 10/1 after official betting partner totesport provided the snooker legend with a £1,000 charity bet at 'Breakfast with the Stars'.
Sixth Race: The Investec Surefooted Handicap - Winners Quotes
FORTUNI MAKES HIS MARK
The Sir Mark Prescott-trained Fortuni turned the Investec Surefooted Handicap into a procession following a change in tactics by the trainer. The 9/1 shot pulled further and further clear in the final two furlongs, to win by four and a half lengths.
The Hughie Morrison-trained Cill Rialaig finished second, with the Dandy Nicholls-trained Mull Of Dubai in third.
Prescott said of the winner: “He’s been a disappointing horse since he won so well at Lingfield last year. [Fortuni won a handicap on the all-weather by four lengths off a mark of 78].
“I didn’t think he ran very well at York [on May 14, when he was second-last in a 15-runner handicap] so we decided to change the tactics and make the running on him this time and it worked,” added the trainer.

FLIPANDO ENDS BARRON TEAM’S
16-YEAR WAIT FOR REPEAT EPSOM WINNER
Neither trainer David Barron or the owners of Flipando were at Epsom to witness the nine-year-old’s valiant victory in the closing race on Investec Derby Day but travelling head lad Royston Mowbray paid tribute to the tough sprinter, who was winning for the ninth time in a 76-race career.
He said: “We were pretty confident coming into the race. The ground suited him and he’s very useful over that distance. Everything went right for him.
“He’s got loads of ability this horse and he’s so tough.”
Mowbray added: “It’s 16 years since we last won a race at Epsom and that was also the last race on Derby Day.”
It was a clean sweep for Yorkshire in the finale as Dandy Nicholls was responsible for the second and third place finishers, Fol Hollow and Something.
He said: “I got second and third but I’d have been much happier with first and second. “
Of the runner-up Fol Hollow, he added: “He’s a cracking horse - he never lets you down. We mustn’t underestimate how good a horse Flipando is.”
Nicholls concluded: “Something is such an unlucky horse. He probably needs a stiff five furlongs and this may have been a tiny bit too far.”

Additional Investec Derby news
MOORE REFLECTS ON GREAT TWO DAYS
After riding in the final race, jockey Ryan Moore reflected on an unforgettable two days in which he landed the Investec Oaks/Investec Derby double with Snow Fairy and Workforce. It was the first time a jockey had achieved this double since Kieren Fallon in 2004.
“I left after racing yesterday, got a bit held up in the race traffic but went home to Newmarket then got up at 6am this morning to ride work for Sir Michael (Stoute) before coming back here,” said Moore.
“I remember seeing Workforce in the spring last year and he was a big, backward two-year-old. He stood out early on. His work was workmanlike and then he went to Goodwood for his first run and I wanted to teach him what I could. I wanted to drop him in and educate him but he strolled home. It was probably too easy and didn’t teach him a lot. We wanted to give him another run but he had a slight setback.
“He impressed me most of the two-year-olds but you just never know over the winter, you want him to fill into his frame and progress as you hope he would. He took a while to come to himself and it’s been a hard winter.
“We were running out of time when he had to go for the Dante and we knew he’d really improve for the race and I just thought things went against him there. He’s not a flash worker at home and the race brought him on hugely.
“We took him to Lingfield for a gallop and it was not strong work there, the aim was just to teach him a bit more. It was no more than a canter but we liked the way he handled the track.
“I was a bit worried about what he did at York but we hoped he’d handle the track here, he always feels like a well-balanced horse at home.
“I’d like to think he’d be better with a bit more give in the ground and if he keeps progressing he could be a really good horse.
“When I asked him to go today he quickened real impressively. I got there sooner than I’d have liked and he had a tough time today, he’s a very honest horse and gave everything. He kept a perfect straight line and showed what experience can do.”
Moore rode his first winner over hurdles and, talking about switching to the Flat, he continued: “I stopped growing and lost a bit of weight. I remember me and my brother (jump jockey Jamie Moore) used to talk and say whether we’d rather win the Derby or National and we’d always say the National but obviously the goalposts have now changed a bit.
“When you start out the big aim is to be champion jockey but you really just look to the next race to get the winners and hope that success will follow.”
TIMEFORM PROVISIONALLY RATE WORKFORCE ON 132
THE BEST INVESTEC DERBY-WINNING PERFORMANCE SINCE GENEROUS IN 1991
Timeform provisionally rate Workforce on 132 after today’s stunning seven-length victory, making it their best Investec Derby-winning performance since Generous in 1991.
Timeform’s Flat Editor Jamie Lynch explained: “Workforce produced a remarkable performance – as good as has been seen in the Investec Derby since Generous in 1991 – in winning by seven lengths, breaking the track record in the process.
“Ballydoyle’s pacemaker At First Sight slipped the field and it reflects great credit on Workforce that, not only was he the only one to get to him, but that he ran right away from him and the rest in the finish.
“This marks him down as potentially every bit as good as Sea The Stars, who ran to a Timeform rating of 126 when he won at Epsom last year.”
Best Investec Derby-winning performances since 1970, according to Timeform:
140 Shergar (1980)
137 Troy (1979)
136 Slip Anchor (1985)
135 Nijinsky (1970)
135 Grundy (1975)
135 Generous (1991)
134 Reference Point (134)
133 Golden Fleece (1982)
132 WORKFORCE (2010)
132 Teenoso (1983)
132 Galileo (2001)
132 Authorized (2007)
RACEGOERS ENJOY SUNNY AND SAFE INVESTEC DERBY
More than 100,000 racegoers have enjoyed a sunny and safe Investec Derby Day following months of planning by Epsom Downs Racecourse and their contractors together with Surrey Police and other emergency services.
Public safety across the event was ensured by the diligent work of the large number of professional stewards and private security staff. They were supported by Surrey Police officers on the few occasions when police powers were needed.
By 6pm on Investec Derby day, only three arrests had been made – a very small number given the large crowd who were enjoying the hot weather. They were a man in his 20s who was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly, another man who was arrested on suspicion of assault and a third man who was arrested on suspicion of affray.
The Investec Derby is one of the most prestigious occasions in the sporting calendar which is attended by thousands of race enthusiasts and casual spectators who enjoy the atmosphere and watch the action from The Hill. The event, which is attended by Her Majesty The Queen, is the largest gathering of people in Surrey each year.
Athough many people made their way to the event by car there were no major traffic incidents. The racecourse provided parking marshals to minimise delays at the site, particularly at potential pinch-points such as roundabouts. A traffic plan was in place for surrounding areas; involving roads policing officers, the Highways Agency, council parking attendants and support from contractors to tow away obstructing vehicles.
Surrey Police’s Silver Commander for the event, Superintendent Duncan Greenhalgh, said: “We have had another successful Investec Derby which has passed without any major incident and the crowds have enjoyed a safe day out in the sunshine.
“The Investec Derby is a huge event and extensive planning goes on every year to ensure it is run safely and smoothly. In recent years the racecourse has taken over responsibility for security, including paying policing costs, which means we can provide specialised support for the event at no cost to taxpayers.
“I must commend the race organisers for their continued commitment to safety, the professionalism of their staff throughout the day and the thorough planning that goes into this event.
“There will continue to be an increased police presence in the area this evening to minimise any disruption and make sure the many racegoers who choose to stay in Epsom after the racing get home safely.”
