THE GOING THIS MORNING REMAINS THE SAME
The going this morning remains Good, good to firm in places.
The GoingStick reading at 9am was 8.4, the same as yesterday afternoon.
In the home straight, the GoingStick reading on the far side is 8.6, while on the stands’ side it is 8.8.
The stalls for the Investec Coronation Cup and the Investec Oaks will be positioned in the centre of the course.
The stalls for the remainder of the races will be on the inside rail.
The course today is dolled out up to a distance of five yards on the inside rail from the six-furlong pole to the winning line, adding approximately 10 yards to all race distances. This dolling out will be removed tonight to provide fresh ground for tomorrow’s Investec Derby.
The weather is warm and sunny this morning and the forecast predicts it will remain so today and tomorrow, reaching 23/24 degrees Celsius later on.
Andrew Cooper, clerk of the course and director of racing at Epsom Downs Racecourse, said this morning: “The going remains the same after a lot of dew this morning.
“It is mainly good, with a few quicker places on the climb up the back straight.
“It is likely I will water after racing today in selected areas - the home straight and possibly the top of the hill and around the mile post.
“I will make a definite decision about whether to water after racing.”
totesport Betting Update
Some Classics are more open betting mediums than others, but seldom has the season’s third Classic, the Investec Oaks (4:05pm), offered such a range of possibilities. “It’s a very open race and even at this stage it’s hard to call which filly will start favourite,” said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.
“We have Aviate at leading the market at 5/1, but Rumoush, at present 11/2, has been tipped by Pricewise in the Racing Post and that could tip the scales in her favour. Sajjhaa, the Michael Jarvis-trained filly is also at 11/2, but the money for that filly may have dried up.
“And the Jim Bolger-trained Akdarena, now exchanging blinkers for a visor, has also captured the public’s imagination, being heavily supported, although we are still holding the price at 7/1.
“For those looking for a Classic double, they could do worse than combine Akdarena with Rewilding for tomorrow’s Investec Derby, as the Godolphin colt has also been the subject of some support, though we are still offering 15/2,” said Primarolo.
While punters may be still trying to fathom the Investec Oaks winner, they appear to have settled upon the winner of the Investec Challenge Handicap (3.25pm). The ultra-consistent Tartan Gunna, a winner or placed in 11 of his 21 outings, has been the subject of a serious gamble.
The Mark Johnston-trained four-year-old - tipped by Pricewise - has been backed from 7/1 this morning into 5/1. While the Michael Jarvis-trained King’s Destiny is still favourite, at 7/2, Tartan Gunna is now the clear second favourite.
SIR GEOFF HURST WANTS A WINNER FOR SPARKS
Geoff Hurst is relying on a Dutch Master (and it isn’t Johan Cruyff) to help him hit the target at the Investec Derby Meeting. Hurst, who memorably scored a hattrick in the 1966 World Cup Final, has been offered a charity £1,000 bet by totesport, the official betting partner of the Investec Derby Festival, the proceeds of which will go to the kids’ charity Sparks.
“Jan Vermeer is the hot favourite and although his odds are prohibitive, I’m confident he’ll win and I’ve stuck the whole lot on the nose,” said Sir Geoff.
The World Cup winner is president of the charity - which is dedicated to funding research across the whole spectrum of paediatric medicine - and one of six celebrities who will, courtesy of totesport, be wagering to raise money.
“For me, the success of Sparks is a goal far more important even than scoring the winner in a World Cup final,” he said.
Actor Robert Powell, a Sparks vice-president, has used his Sparks contacts to come up with his Derby selection. “I’m backing a terrific Sparks ambassador in Frankie Dettori to guide Rewilding home and help make children’s medical research a big winner,’ explained Powell.
Snooker legend John Virgo reckons Sir Michael Stoute’s Workforce can be the first horse to be beaten in the totesport Dante at York to go on and win the Investec Derby, while England and British Lions lock Simon Shaw has plumped for Henry Cecil’s horse. “I’m no racing expert but you can’t beat a name like Bullet Train for speed, can you? I’m hoping my selection can steam home and land a big payout for Sparks,” he said.
BBC TV presenter Kate Silverton has opted for Midas Touch and actor Phil Daniels is hoping that the 33/1 outsider, Ted Spread, can give Sparks a bumper payday.
“We’re delighted to be supporting Sparks in partnership with Epsom racecourse,’ said totesport spokesman George Primarolo. “The Sparks ambassadors love their racing and hopefully one of them can land a nice touch in the Investec Derby and raise some money for their important research.”

GODOLPHIN TRIO READY TO RUN
With three serious candidates and two of the world’s best jockeys on side it is little wonder the Godolphin team are eager for tomorrow’s Investec Derby.
Al Zir, Buzzword and Rewilding have all shown enough to go on short-lists for the world’s most famous race, and with former champions Frankie Dettori and Kieren Fallon being joined by past Dubai champion apprentice Ahmed Ajtebi there is every chance Godolphin’s famous blue colours will nail a first Investec Derby win (Lammtarra, the team’s winner in 1995 carried different silks).
Racing manager Simon Crisford said today: “The Derby is a unique race and one we love to be involved with - if we win it, even better.”
Al Zir (Fallon) is stabled with Godolphin’s long-standing trainer Saeed Bin Suroor, who is no stranger to Epsom, and Buzzword (Ajtebi) and Rewilding (Dettori) are handled by Mahmood Al Zarooni, who gained a British licence earlier this year and makes his debut at the Investec Derby meeting.
Crisford said of the new trainer: “He’s pretty relaxed. He’s very excited about the occasion and he has two nice horses, particularly Rewilding who is a very strong contender.
“Sheikh Mohammed [Godolphin’s founder] chose Rewilding for Frankie, but it was a straightforward decision after the horse won [the Listed Cocked Hat Stakes] at Goodwood last month. He has a mile and a half pedigree, goes on any ground and is a fast-improving colt. Andre [Fabre, who trained the colt until three weeks before making his British debut for Al Zarooni] said he was improving and anything but an easy win at Goodwood would have been disappointing.”
Al Zir will be better for a step up in trip, said Crisford, who added: “We’ve not seen him at his best over a mile - at a mile and a half he could be a serious contender.
For a big horse he’s extremely well balanced, which is crucial here, and he has a high cruising speed. In races like the Guineas he’s just lacked the acceleration you find in a champion, but over a longer trip he can come into his own.”
Of Buzzword, who like Rewilding was given a late entry to the race on Monday at a cost of £75,000 per horse, Crisford said: “He worked really well after running so promisingly in the French 2000 Guineas [when fourth to Lope de Vega]. He was staying on at the end of that race and we were really keen to try him over a longer trip.
“We made the decision to run him after he worked last weekend - he’s a legitimate contender and the third-top-rated runner in the race. He tries hard and he’s an honest, genuine horse.”
FALLON READY TO PURR WITH AL ZIR
Kieren Fallon, Britain’s six-time champion jockey, returns to the scene of some of his greatest triumphs at Epsom’s Investec Derby meeting.
Tomorrow’s ride on Godolphin’s Al Zir will be his first in the Investec Derby since 2006. He has won the race three times - on Oath (1999), Kris Kin (2003) and North Light (2004).
Fallon said: “Epsom is a favourite track of mine because I’ve been lucky here over the years. [In the Derby] I like to take my time. Much depends on the pace of the race and how it unfolds - whether you kick or whether you sit. It’s great when it works but not so nice when it backfires.”
Asked about his time out of the sport due to suspensions caused by positive drug tests and inquiries into race-fixing allegations (the court case collapsed and Fallon was found innocent), Fallon said: “I missed not being able to ride over the years, but the time off did me no harm. I’ve done a lot of travelling while taking a break and it came at the right time. I hope to have many more years in the game because of what happened.”
He admitted a recent lean spell had revealed he was just short of his brilliant best, but a Listed win on Luca Cumani’s Seta and a four-timer at Ayr had rebuilt his confidence. “I wasn’t riding well,” he said, “but recently changed my agent [from Dave Pollington to Gareth Owen] and things have just started to happen. Within a couple of days I felt back where I wanted to be. My timing was right and that helps my horses win races. Going to Italy and winning the Oaks last weekend helped so I feel really good at the moment and I’m looking forward to this weekend.”
Of Al Zir he said: “He comes into the race as the third top horse on speed figures and I hope he’ll improve on that over this distance - I’m looking forward to riding him.”
And if he couldn’t be on Al Zir, who would he choose? “Midas Touch,” he said. “The time he did at Leopardstown [when winning the Derrinstown Stud Trial] was better than Galileo and High Chaparral [who both went on to victory at Epsom] which speaks for itself.”
Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford, said of Fallon: “I believe Kieren’s ridden 15 times for us over the years and partnered three winners. While he was with Ballydoyle he didn’t ride much for us, but we’re delighted to have him in the saddle tomorrow on Al Zir.
“We have a lot of established jockeys in the stable, but we hope to use Kieren in future and he is the king around Epsom on Derby Day.”
POTENTIAL LANDMARKS IN TODAY’S INVESTEC OAKS
- Trainer Henry Cecil needs just one more victory to take his total number of English Classic winners to 25. He is represented in today’s race by Timepiece and Aviate. The most successful trainer of all-time in the English Classics is John Scott, who saddled 40 winners between 1827 and 1863.
- Cecil is already the most successful current trainer in the Investec Oaks with eight victories. If Aviate or Timepiece wins today, it will take him within three winners of the all-time most successful trainer in the premier fillies’ Classic held by Robert Robson, who recorded a dozen Oaks successes between 1802 and 1825.
- Other trainers previously successful if the Investec Oaks with runners today are Jim Bolger (Akdarena), Aidan O’Brien (Awe Inspiring, Cabaret and Remember When), Ralph Beckett (Ceildh House), Michael Jarvis (Sajjhaa) and Ed Dunlop (Snow Fairy).
- Bikini Babe and Remember When both go into today’s race as maidens. The last maiden to prevail in the Oaks was Sun Princess in 1983.
- Ceilidh House has a very similar profile to the 2008 winner Look Here. Both fillies are owned by Julian Richmond-Watson and trained by Ralph Beckett, and both were placed in the Lingfield Oaks Trial before heading to Epsom Downs.
- Kieren Fallon is the winning-most current jockey in the Investec Oaks. Today he partners Bikini Babe. Frankie Dettori has had three winners and could join Fallon on four winners if his mount Sajjhaa were to prevail.
- Sajjhaa goes into today’s race with the benefit of just one previous run. The last filly to have won the Oaks with only one earlier run was Asmena in 1950.First Race: The Investec Diomed Stakes - Winner’s Quotes
PATIENCE PAYS FOR THE BUSHMAN
The Bushman, bought at the Horses In Training Sale at Newmarket in October 2007 for just 15,000 guineas, took his earnings over the six-figure mark with a doughty victory in the Investec Derby Festival opener, the Group Three Investec Diomed Stakes, beating off a determined challenge by Alexandros to win by a neck.
David Simcock, trainer of the 11/1 winner, put the Bushman’s progress down to the fact they did not rush the horse. “We’ve been pretty patient with him over the years, I think that’s paying off now. He was unraced at two and three. He only started racing at four and he’s relatively lightly-raced.
“We’ve been very careful with him. Obviously, you don’t pick up an unraced horse at the sale and not have issues. These have been ironed out and now we’re more confident with him.
“We’re probably a little bit braver too with him as regards which ground we run him on. We’re more confident. William [Buick] said it’s just riding on the fast side and that’s very acceptable for him. Whether it would be too quick tomorrow I don’t know,” said the trainer.
Simock admitted that he had doubts coming into the final furlong, as the Frankie Dettori-ridden Alexandros drew alongside his charge. “It looked as if he was [going to get caught] but William pulled his stick through and when he hit the rising ground he just found a little bit more. He’s very, very game,” said Simcock.
There are no immediate plans for the horse. “We had thought about going to France next Sunday, if it had been too quick here, but obviously that’s not going to happen now. There’s nothing for him at Ascot - he’s not good enough for a Queen Anne and there are no other mile races apart from the Royal Hunt Cup. If you ask me where we’re going next, I couldn’t really tell you. We’ll just take it one race at a time,” said the trainer.
William Buick added: “He pulled out all of the stops - everything came to him and he stuck his head out. I could feel the others coming the whole way, from a furlong out, but he always kept finding for me.”

ALEXANDROS BACK TO BEST
Trainer Saeed bin Suroor was delighted with Alexandros’s run when losing out by a neck to Bushman in the opening Group Three Investec Diomed Stakes.
“He ran a huge race but I think the ground was a little fast for him,” said bin Suroor. “I thought for a second we were going to win but just got beaten by a better horse and that’s racing. But I’m delighted that the horse is in brilliant form and is much better condition than when he was in Dubai.”
The Luca Cumani-trained Mabait stepped out in Group company for the first time and pleased his connections with a decent run for third, finishing less than a length behind Bushman and Alexandros.
The trainer’s wife, Sara Cumani, said: “He ran very well - there was a moment when we saw the pictures from the balloon and he actually had his head in front for a stride but then Kieren (Fallon) said he got a little bit unbalanced.
“He ran a fantastic race and he’s taken the step up in class very well. He’s very consistent and loved the ground, so we’re looking forward to his next run.”
JOCKEYS SAY GOOD TO FIRM
Jockeys gave their opinions on the state of the ground following the opening Investec Diomed Stakes, with the general consensus being that the ground is riding on the fast side of good.
William Buick, rider of the winner Bushman, said: "Perfect. Good to firm."
Frankie Dettori, rider of runner-up Alexandros, said: "Good to firm."
Kieren Fallon, rider of the third Mabait, said: "Good."
Tom Queally, who rode The Cheka to be fourth, said: "Nice, quick ground."
Dane O'Neill. partner of the fifth Beauchamp Xerxes, said: "Good ground."
Richard Hughes, rider of the sixth Ordnance Row, said: "Good to firm."
Paul Hanagan, rider of the unplaced Harrison George, commented: "Quick."
Johnny Murtagh, rider of unplaced 11/4 favourite Penitent, described it as: "Beautiful."
Richard Kingscote, rider of unplaced Classic Colori, said: "Firm."

SECOND RACE WINNING QUOTES - INVESTEC MILE (HANDICAP)
GIGHA SCORES FOR FALLON
Kieren Fallon brought the Mark Johnston-trained Tartan Gigha with a well-timed run to take the Investec Mile for a second year running by a short-head from Set The Trend.
“It’s his second win here and he is in great form - he has been in good form all season and he went very close in the Cambridgeshire at the end of last year. He’s a real good horse who is improving all of the time,” said Johnston.
“Sadly, the owner (Isobel Bird) died earlier in the year and it was heart-breaking. She had been such a loyal owner and stuck with it through all of the bad and difficult horses and now everything has come so good. It’s so sad.”
Johnston’s wife Deirdre added: “It’s very emotional for all of us and Isobel is in our thoughts. The horse has been so consistent for quite some time and I thought a furlong out that he’d get there easily but he only just got up. We just take it one race at a time with him and we’ll see what happens to his rating now.”
Bird’s husband Frank added:“It was my wife’s horse and he won the same race last year, so it has been brilliant.”
Fallon added: “It gives you a bit of confidence to get an early winner in like that and I did think I’d won, I thought I’d got his head in front.”

TREND JUST DENIED IN THRILLING FINISH
Set The Trend had been well supported for his seasonal debut and started the Investec Mile as the 7/2 favourite. The Andrew Balding-trained four-year-old son of Reset looked every bit the winner all the way down the straight but was narrowly denied the spoils by the fast-finishing Tartan Gigha at the line to finish the short-head second.
“He’s run a great race,” said Balding. “Obviously it’s disappointing to be nabbed on the line but he’s been off the track for a while and has plenty of ability.”
The trainer added: “All being well he’ll go for the big mile handicap at Sandown on Eclipse day.”
ROYAL ASCOT NEXT FOR VAINGLORY
Vainglory finished third in the Investec Mile Handicap in 2008, and he repeated that effort in today’s running of the race.
Trainer David Simcock said: “I’m delighted with him, because he’s run his usual honest race. Unfortunately he didn’t have the pace mid-race, but he kept on and kept on.
“He’s a very honest horse. The draw [12] was slightly against us, but Martin [Lane] got him into a very good position. Kieren [Fallon, on winner Tartan Gigha, drawn 10] came from a similar position but he had a bit more horse under him at a vital time. Despite that we’re delighted.
“Now we’ll look at something like the Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot.”

Third race - The Investec Coronation Cup - Winner’s quotes
GLORY ‘IN THE ZONE’ AS HE LANDS THE INVESTEC CORONATION CUP IN STYLE
Last year’s Investec Derby runner-up Fame And Glory went one better on his return to Epsom, repelling Sariska to win the Investec Coronation Cup by a length and a half.
Having now won his last three races, the son of Montjeu could not head to Royal Ascot and drop to 10 furlongs for the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes.
Trainer Aidan O’Brien said: “He’s tactically very quick now. We’ll maybe have a look at the Prince of Wales’s Stakes for him next as he’s very pacey but we’ll see how he is.
“Sariska’s a great filly but we were very happy as he was going very well - he travelled very well through the race. He’s a great horse.”
Winning rider Johnny Murtagh was full of praise for his mount who atoned for fluffing his lines at the gate by quickly hitting his stride to be prominent throughout just behind his pacemaker Dixie Music.
Murtagh said: ““He just missed the stalls a little bit today - he didn’t jump out very well - and there didn’t look to be too much pace in the race so I said to Seamus that I would probably follow him. He rides Fame And Glory in his work all of the time, so he knows him well.
“The horse on my inside probably had me a little bit keen early in but he has done it the hard way.
“I wanted to just get a breather into him but he went hard for a long way and he’s a real champion. I like the way he knuckled down.
“He’s a real champion and I liked the way he knuckled down in the last furlong. When Sariska came to us, there was only going to be one winner.
“He likes his races to be a good test but he’s a lot sharper and more mature this year. Apart from Sea The Stars he was the best horse around last season and coming here last year Seamus (Heffernan), who rides him in his work at home, said he thought he would win the Derby.”
He added: “He’s very solid, there are no chinks in his armour. He’s much more on the ball this year and is showing a bit more dash. He’s really in the zone now. When Sariska came, she put up a good battle but it wasn’t good enough. He won comfortably in the end.”
Third race Investec Coronation Cup - second place
OPTIONS OPEN FOR ‘STAR’ SARISKA
Investec Oaks winner Sariska returned to Epsom today for a crack at the same sponsor’s Coronation Cup, and she ran a fine race when second to Fame And Glory.
The Michael Bell-trained four-year-old stalked the winner into the straight, but could not quicken past him and was beaten one and a half lengths, with third-placed High Heeled another length and a quarter further behind.
Bell said: “He [Fame And Glory] is a very good horse right on his game, Sariska is a very good filly right on her game, but we came up a little bit short. Not by much and that was a very good run against a very good horse. The filly is a star, and it’s no disgrace to be second.”
Sariska is well known as a filly who is at her peak on easy ground, and Bell said: “Jamie [Spencer] said the ground wasn’t ideal for her - she’s effective on this ground, but softer plays to her strengths.
“It’s never wise to make a decision straight after a race and we’ll have a big discussion and make a strategy with Carol [owner Lady Carol Bamford] and Hugo [racing manager Hugo Lascelles]. The Arc is the ultimate aim if the ground is in her favour, but in the meantime we’ve got the option of going back against her own sex. Unless Fame And Glory has an operation we won’t meet him there, although we’ll happily take him on again when the time comes.”
Sariska is an imposing filly, with the size and strength that would do justice to a four-year-old colt. Bell said: “She’s a beast - she’s half man - but she’s also lightly-raced and that’s what is standing her in good stead now.”
Third Race: The Investec Coronation Cup - Placed Quotes
HIGH HEELED DELIGHTS GOSDEN
CHANNON AND BIN SUROOR FRUSTRATED
High Heeled, running her first race for trainer John Gosden, made a mockery of her odds of 25/1 to finish third in the Investec Coronation Cup, two and three quarter lengths behind the winner Fame and Glory.
High Heeled, sold at the Tattersalls December Sales for 600,000 guineas, joined the Gosden yard the day after she came out of the ring. The trainer inisted that she came to Epsom for the Investec Coronation Cup at only about “85%” and his delight was evident.
“We wanted to run her in the Middleton, but it was far too firm at York and we had to wait for this. I know Andrew [Cooper, clerk of the course] does a grand job here. I walked the whole course and it’s perfect racing ground, the stick going in three inches.
“She ran a great race and I couldn’t be more thrilled. William [Buick] said she was a little bit tired in the last furlong. She just blew up in the dip, the last 30 yards. And she’s a better filly with juice in the ground,” said Gosden.
High Heeled now has the Prix Vermeille, the Lancashire Oaks and the Pretty Polly Stakes to choose from as possible future targets, according to the Newmarke-based handler.
Mick Channon, trainer of fourth-placed Youmzain, was upset that three horses - Dixie Music, Jukebox Jury and the eventual winner Fame And Glory - were allowed to go clear up the hill.
Channon said: “He ran well again, but it was really two different races out there and I don’t understand what they [the rest of the field] were doing. They gave three horses 10 lengths and you just cant do that especially when one of the horses is an [Irish] Derby winner.
Saeed bin Suroor, trainer of fifth-placed Cavalryman, said: “We didn’t really get a clear run, we were stuck in traffic and had no luck today. He should have finished better than that. He’s in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes [at Ascot] and we will have to see how he comes back from this as it’s only 12 days away.
“But it’s good that he showed his class again today; the stiff mile and a quarter at Ascot should suit him well.”

Fourth race - Investec Challenge Handicap - the winner
BACK TO WINNING WAYS FOR FIERY
It has taken Fiery Lad 18 months to rediscover winning form, but he did so in style by landing the Investec Challenge (Handicap) under Kieren Fallon.
The five-year-old was often placed last year when trained by Ger Lyons, but a private sale to Samanda Racing and switch to Luca Cumani’s stable had resulted in three unplaced efforts, twice in Dubai and then back at Lingfield.
Today he sluiced from last to first, and won comfortably, and while Cumani was not present, his wife, Sara, said: “He never really came to himself physically in Dubai. He didn’t flourish and never pleased Luca with his condition.
“We had heard he doesn’t show much at home, which he doesn’t, so we just hoped today that things would work out. He looks fantastic, he’s been working okay, the track was likely to suit and the conditions of the race were ideal because we knew they would be going fast.
“He really couldn’t be bothered to lay up early on, but we had been told to ride him like a ‘non-trier’ and hope he would come past them and he did it well. We’ve bought three horses for the current owners and they have now all won so we’re very happy.”

QUIRKY RAMONA DELIGHTS ATTWATER
Ramona Chase, who is trained by Tattenham Corner just a few hundred yards from the Epsom Downs winning post, delighted trainer Michael Attwater despite losing out by three-quarters of a length in the Investec Challenge.
The five-year-old, who was sent off at 40/1, was racing from 6lb out of the handicap and Attwater admitted the horse has not been easy to train.
“He is completely quirky and the most frustraing horse I’ve had,” said the trainer. “He has never lost his ability and was rated 92 when the owners bought him. He is a habitual slow starter yet it has taken me a year to tell jockeys that he can’t make up 10 lengths, he’s got to be sitting close to the pace with cover.
“In fairness to Nicky (Mackay) he said he was not close enough today and when the gaps came he had to go so probably hit the front too soon.
“But we’re delighted even though he was due to drop 3lb so we’ll have to see what the handicapper does. He’d have liked a bit more juice in the ground and these quirky tracks with a lot of turns get the best out of him.”

FIFTH RACE WINNING QUOTES - INVESTEC OAKS (GROUP ONE)
SNOW TAKES SECOND INESTEC OAKS FOR DUNLOP
Trainer Ed Dunlop, successful six years ago with the brilliant Ouija Board, won a second Investec Oaks this afternoon when Snow Fairy got up to beat Meeznah by a neck and give champion jockey Ryan Moore a first British Classic success.
The Intikhab filly, who races for her breeder Cristina Patino, was supplemented at a cost of £20,000 on Saturday for the Investec Oaks after winning a Listed event at Goodwood last month.
“I have lost my voice!,” said Dunlop. “Thank you to Mrs Patino for letting us supplement her and I thought that Ryan gave her the most amazing ride. It was a master ride from a master jockey. We got lucky that Ryan was available and we’d won half the battle when we found out he could ride.
“Mrs Patino has most of her horses with my father and one with me and one with my brother (Harry), so to win an Investec Oaks is quite amazing. We had doubts about her staying but we knew that she was very tough and that she can quicken, which she showed today. She had the speed unlike a lot of these staying fillies. Although she’s by Intikhab there is a lot of stamina on her dam’s side.
“She was not beaten far in the Prestige Stakes last season and then I stupidly thought she was better with give in the ground but she hated the soft going when we ran her at Newbury.
“I said to Mrs Patino that she could go for the Oaks or the Ribblesdale and she said that there was only one Oaks. There was no pressure on me because she had won the money needed to supplement her at Goodwood.
“It’s an amazing day. I must say thank you to my staff for doing a fantastic job. The whole thing is a bit of a fairytale.
“You can’t compare her with Ouija Board at the moment but she is an Oaks winner. It’s just great to have won two Oaks, especially as this one is from our new yard.
“She’s not in any other races at the moment and some of the options are quite expensive. The natural thing would be the Irish Oaks but she would have to be supplemented so I will discuss it with the owner and see how she comes out of this.”
LANDMARK WIN FOR MOORE
Champion jockey Ryan Moore celebrated his first British Classic success when winning the Investec Oaks aboard Snow Fairy.
“It was a very rough race with interference early on and I decided to take her back and give her a chance because there was an awful lot of bumping around,” said Moore.
“The gaps opened up nicely and, with a good turn of foot, she has quickened up between them. I followed Johnny (Murtagh) through and it all went well. The gap was big enough and I knew she had the speed to take it. It suited her that the pace slackened off in the middle part and allowed her to stay the trip.
“I knew that she had speed because she’d won over seven furlongs at two and quickened up very well when she won at Goodwood last time.
“She hung on to the fence at the finish and went a bit left but she kept on to win and I’d been confident from two out.
“To be honest I’ve never been too worried about not having won a Classic, but it’s nice to win one.”
Owner Cristina Patino added: “I thought that it wasn’t possible that she could get through and Ryan gave her the most extraordinary ride, the most wonderful ride.
“We talked over supplementing her after watching at Goodwood, which I didn’t even know was a trial for the Oaks, and I said yes - the prizemoney was enough so I said put it back in! I give the trainer all the credit because it was a wonderful bit of training.

Meeznah went agonisingly close to giving her young trainer David Lanigan a dream result with his first-ever runner in a Classic, losing out to the winner Snow Fairy by just a neck after getting her head in front in the straight in the Investec Oaks.
The Newmarket-based trainer, who sent out the daughter of Dynaformer for owners Saif Ali and Saeed H Altayer, said: “She was positioned perfectly throughout the race. We were just missing that second run that we wanted before we came here. She was a little bit green and Ted (Durcan) said she just stuck her head up when she got a bit tight for room when turning in to the straight. He thought that three out she was going to win it - Ted gave her a perfect ride and gave her every chance.”
He continued: “I honestly do think she’ll improve a lot for the race and if she comes out of it alright we’ll have to have a serious think about going to Ireland (for the Irish Oaks in July). She’s only lightly-raced this year.”
A stone bruise earlier in the season put paid to Meeznah’s chances of runing in a Classic trial, with her her only outing this year being a winning one in a Newmarket maiden, in which she beat the John Gosden-trained Radio Wave by nine lengths.
Lanigan, a former assistant to Henry Cecil who is now in his third season with a training licence, added: “I have to say I had a heart attack when John Gosden’s filly got beaten the other day at Chepstow. I suddenly thought, ‘God, I hope I haven’t done the wrong thing’.
“I’ve always liked the filly, she’s always had a great mind and showed us plenty at home. A week ago Mr Cecil let me work with a couple of his fillies and I had a lot more confidence after that as she worked well that day. She’s just a very straightforward filly and has lots of class about her.
“It’s important for a small yard to have a runner in this race and to run so creditably is brilliant. We were all very excited but at the same time very nervous.”

Snow Fairy
Snow Fairy’s three-length victory over Pipette in the Listed Height Of Fashion Stakes over just short of 10 furlongs at Goodwood on May 19 prompted connections to supplement the filly for the Investec Oaks at a cost of £20,000. That was Snow Fairy’s first outing of 2010 but she was kept busy throughout her two-year-old season, racing six times. After a debut third at Newbury in June, she easily landed a six-furlong Polytrack maiden at Lingfield on July 8. August brought three good efforts. Following a head defeat in a fillies’ nursery at Newmarket, she stepped up to seven furlongs on the July Course, coming home a little over three lengths fourth to Long Lashes in the Group Three Sweet Solera Stakes. August 29 brought an even better effort as she went down by a short-neck in the Group Three Prestige Stakes over the same distance at Goodwood, clinching third behind Sent From Heaven. The Intikhab filly’s final juvenile start saw her flop on soft ground in a Listed contest at Newbury in October. Bred by Windflower Overseas Holdings, Snow Fairy was bought in for 1,800 euros at Tattersalls Ireland in December, 2008. She is the first foal of seven-furlong winner Woodland Dream, who is a half-sister to smart middle-distance runners Big Bad Bob and Persian Lightning, from the further family of 1999 Derby winner Oath. She won the Investec Oaks at Epsom Downs today in determined fashion by a neck, with the rest of the field strung out behind.

Anamoine Ltd
The red and yellow colours of Anamoine Ltd represent Cristina Patino, who is set to have the biggest three days in her time as a racehorse owner. Not only will Snow Fairy represent her in Friday’s Investec Oaks but Elusive Pimpernel, racing under her other banner of Windflower Overseas Holdings, is due to run in Sunday’s French Derby. Patino’s past flagbearers have included Lucky Guest and Big Bad Bob although Craven Stakes winner Elusive Pimpernel and Snow Fairy are up there with the best of them. Patino’s grandfather Simon was a mining tycoon in Bolivia, known as the ‘King Of Tin’. Her father Antenor carried on the family business before the Patino Mines were nationalised in the 1952 Bolivian Revolution. Cristina Patino was born in Paris on August 2, 1932, and shuns publicity. She has reportedly been married three times and her hobbies include skiing. As well as Elusive Pimpernel’s trainer John Dunlop, she also has a horse each with his sons Harry and Snow Fairy’s handler Ed, and in Ireland her trainers include Ger Lyons, Jessica Harrington and Tracey Collins.. Her racing and breeding interests are managed by bloodstock agent Patrick Cooper of BBA Ireland and she has around half a dozen mares and the stallion Big Bad Bob, who has made an impressive start to his career, at Islanmore Stud in County Limerick. Ed Dunlop
Ed Dunlop enjoyed his first British Classic victory when Ouija Board took the 2004 Investec Oaks in impressive fashion. Under Dunlop’s expert handling, the daughter of Cape Cross went on to establish herself as one of the great race mares of the modern era with a host of international triumphs including the Irish Oaks (2004), Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (2004 & 2006), Hong Kong Vase (2005), Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (2006) and Nassau Stakes (2006). Dunlop’s initial taste of European Classic success came in 1996 when Ta Rib won the Poule d’Essai Des Pouliches in only his second full season with a licence. Born on 20 October, 1968, the Eton-educated Dunlop’s father John sent out Investec Derby winners Shirley Heights and Erhaab and has won every British Classic apart from the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas. Ed Dunlop was forced into training prematurely in October, 1994, following the tragic murder of Alex Scott, to whom he had been assistant at Oak Stables, in Newmarket. Dunlop took over the licence on an immediate temporary basis and was soon handed the reins full-time after the yard’s owner, Sheikh Maktoum Al Maktoum, placed his faith firmly in the young handler, making him his salaried trainer. In 1996 Dunlop sent out Iktamal to take the Group One Haydock Park Sprint Cup for Sheikh Maktoum, who renamed the yard Gainsborough Stables, and in 2006 he saddled another Group One winner in the late Sheikh’s colours as Court Masterpiece took the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. The Sheikh’s death in January, 2006, resulted in Dunlop taking out a two-year lease on Gainsborough Stables and becoming a public trainer for the 2007 season. He moved to La Grange Stables in Newmarket last season and has around 100 horses in training for owners such as Hamdan Al Maktoum, Sir Alex Ferguson, Cheveley Park Stud, Cliveden Stud, Harry Findlay, Susan Roy, Lady Lloyd-Webber, Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, St Albans Bloodstock LLP and Lord Derby. Other major successes Dunlop has enjoyed include the 1998 Royal Lodge Stakes at Ascot with Mutaahab, the 2001 Irish Oaks, Vodafone Nassau Stakes and Flower Bowl at Belmont Park with Lailani, the 1999 Group One Gran Criterium with Night Style, the 2002 Grade One E P Taylor Stakes at Woodbine in Canada with Fraulein, and the 2005 Prix de la Foret with Court Masterpiece. Snow Fairy was the second Investec Oaks winner for the trainer.

Ryan Moore
Ryan Moore, who was born on September 18, 1983, was champion apprentice in 2003 with 59 winners and champion jockey just three years later in 2006, when he recorded 182 victories. He comes from a family steeped in racing history. His late grandfather Charlie was a trainer, Sussex-based dad Gary, a former jump jockey, is a successful trainer under both codes, while mum Jayne was an accomplished amateur rider, as was his aunt Candy Morris. His older brother Jamie is a successful jump jockey while his sister Hayley has also ridden a winner under Rules. His youngest brother, Joshua, has followed his siblings into a riding career and is currently an amateur. Ryan Moore's career began over hurdles, when making a winning debut as an amateur on Mersey Beat at Towcester on May 15, 2000. His first major success on the Flat came as a 5lb claimer when he captured the 2002 Cesarewitch at Newmarket on the Martin Pipe-trained Miss Fara. He is now first rider to Sir Michael Stoute and has been twice champion jockey as well as champion apprentice. He enjoyed an initial Group One success on Notnowcato in the 2006 Juddmonte International and partnered the same horse to victory in the 2007 Coral-Eclipse, when, showing commendable enterprise, he came wide into the straight and raced alone on the stands' side on faster ground. Moore suffered a complex fracture of his right arm following a fall at Lingfield on March 16, 2007, and missed three months of that season as a result. However, he still finished third in the jockeys' championship and regained his title in 2008 when he won the Ladbrokes St Leger and Breeders’ Cup Turf on Conduit. Last season he was champion jockey for a third time with 179 victories and won the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes on Conduit. Moore also rode Conduit to success in a second Breeders’ Cup Turf and landed further Group One victories in the Investec Coronation Cup on Ask, the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud on Spanish Moon and the Prix Maurice de Gheest on King’s Apostle. He won his first Classic on Snow Fairy in the Investec Oaks.

RUMOUSH NOT TRACK HAPPY
Marcus Tregoning, trainer of Rumoush, felt that his filly had probably not been comfortable on the gradients of the Epsom Down course after she finished fourth in the Investec Oaks.
“She’s run a goodish race, but I think she’s got very unbalanced. Possibly she didn’t handle the course, which surprised be a little bit. She stayed all right, the whole family stay well,” he said.
Tregoning discounted a bump from the winner, Snow Fairy, as they approached the final furlong, noting that “Ryan Moore [on Snow Fairy] was travelling better, so there’s not too many hard luck stories from me.”
The stewards concurred: after viewing a recording they were “satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved Snow Fairy’s placing.”
Tregoning said that he would wait until he’s spoken to filly’s the owner, Hamdam Al Maktoum, before deciding Rumoosh’s next outing. “The Yorkshire Oaks is a possibility - the track will suit her as long as they get the ground right at York. The track at York for the last couple of meetings has been lacking in grass. It’s been a very hard spring for them and of course they did all that drainage work,” said the trainer.
Michael Jarvis, trainer of Sajjhaa who was eased down and finished last of the 15 runners, also felt that his filly was not suited by the course. “She got very unbalanced down the hill and Frankie said her chance had gone before they came round the corner. Obviously, there was no point in giving her a hard race to finish 10th,” he said.
Ralph Beckett, trainer of Ceilidh House, was very disappointed with his filly, who was one place in front of Sajjhaa in 14th. “The ground was our only legitimate explanation, but even that doesn’t explain it,” he said.
Aidan O’Brien, trainer of third-placed Remember When said: “I am delighted.”
BEATEN JOCKEYS AFTER THE INVESTEC OAKS
Tom Queally, rider of the 7/2 favourite Aviate who finished seventh, said: “I had a nice run through the race, but it was maybe just a case that some of the others just stayed better on the day. She is still quite inexperienced and maybe didn’t handle the camber.”
Eddie Ahern, rider of the ninth Timepiece, said: “She couldn’t use herself on the ground.”
Kevin Manning, rider of sixth-placed Akdarena, said: “The ground was probably just a bit too quick on the day but she has run well.”
Richard Hills, who partnered Rumoush to finish fourth, said: “She just didn’t handle the camber on the hill and was always trying to correct herself which cost me.”
Johnny Murtagh, rider of the third-placed Remember When, said: “That was a very good run. I am very happy with her.”
Frankie Dettori’s mount finished last of the 15 runners and the Italian reported: “She was unsuited by the track.”
Colm O’Donoghue, who finished 13th on Cabaret, said: “She was in a good position but just a bit one-paced on the day.”

Fifth Race - Investec Oaks - Press Conference Quotes
FAIRY PLANS AFOOT
Owner/breeder Cristina Patino gambled £20,000 to enter Snow Fairy for the Investec Oaks at the supplementary stage on Saturday, but it paid off in style.
The filly, ridden by Ryan Moore, won more than 10 times that amount, and trainer Ed Dunlop said, with tongue slightly in cheek: “It was a very easy decision to make - she’d won £23,000 when successful at Goodwood, so it was this race or the Ribblesdale Stakes [at Royal Ascot] and Mrs Patino very sportingly said ‘there’s only one Oaks’.”
Dunlop trained Ouija Board to win the Investec Oaks in 2004, but when asked if that victory gave him an indication of Snow Fairy’s chances he said: “No, because we planned the Oaks for Ouija Board when she was a two-year-old, not three weeks beforehand. I had major reservations about this filly staying, but Ryan rode her four days ago and seemed quite optimistic when I took the saddle from him.
“The great thing is she can quicken - there were a lot of staying fillies in the race - and it was an amazing ride to come from that far back in a messy race.”
Reflecting on Snow Fairy’s route to victory, jockey Ryan Moore said: “It was a very rough race, particularly when the pace slowed half-way through, but luckily I was able to get in behind Johnny [Murtagh, on Remember When] who had his two stablemates around him and so I got a good trip. We were all bunched up three furlongs out, but my filly had a turn of foot and I used it.”
This was Moore’s first Classic victory, but he was his usual phlegmatic self. Asked about his emotions he said: “Being honest there’s not too much emotion going on. It’s a marvellous race to win, but there’s no point worrying or getting too excited about any one race because there are more rides tomorrow. I just get on with it and hope things work out.”
Asked what might be Snow Fairy’s best trip, Moore said: “I think she might be effective at 10 and 12 furlongs. Today’s wasn’t a strongly-run race, but they were still climbing for the first half and they have to stay at Epsom.”
Moore said he thought the Curragh, and a bid for the Irish Oaks, would suit the filly, and Dunlop joked that Mrs Patino’s racing manager, Patrick Cooper, would have to ask her if she would supplement for that race, too.
However, Dunlop added: “She’s won at Goodwood, so the Nassau Stakes [over ten furlongs] has to be an option later in the year, although she’s in no races at present.
“Ouija Board went straight to the Irish Oaks as many Oaks winners do, but that’s quite a long way away so she can have a break. Fast ground she loves - I got that completely wrong at the back-end of her two-year-old season - so she could go to the Curragh. She’s very straightforward, very tough and easy to train, although she can be a little masculine and a little aggressive in the box. She’s a credit to the team at home.”
Reflecting on an Investec Oaks home-bred winner, Patrick Cooper, said: “It’s fantastic for Mrs Patino - it’s what we’re in the game for. She’s had horses in training with John Dunlop for some 20 years and it’s great for John that his son has trained the Oaks winner.
“The dam of this filly is a sister to Big Bad Bob [by Roberto’s son Bob Back], so it was easy to go to another son of Roberto [in this case Intikhab, the sire of Snow Fairy]. Unfortunately after breeding this filly the mare was barren for three years in a row - we had sent her to America to be covered by Arch - and so we let her go, and I believe she’ s now being covered by paint [coloured] horses.
“At least we’ve got this filly, who is now an Oaks winner, to keep and breed from.”
Sixth race - The Investec Surrey Stakes - Winner’s quotes
VICTORY FOR SHAKESPEAREAN ON SEASONAL CURTAIN UP
With victories in the Solario Stakes and Goffs Million Mile last year, Shakespearean had already proved himself to be a classy individual and he bounced back in fine style on his three-year-old debut to land the seven-furlong Listed Surrey Stakes for the Godolphin stable of Saeed bin Suroor.
Godolphin’s racing manager Simon Crisford said: “He put up a good effort and handled the track supremely well.
“He’s really honest and genuine - that was a pleasing performance. We’ll have a look and see to find a suitable race for him, perhaps the St James’s Palace Stakes, he’s well entered up.”
Frankie Dettori is always a crowd-pleaser and even the extreme heat at Epsom could not deter his trademark flying dismount.
Dettori said of the winner: “This is the first horse I’ve ridden today who could truly handle the Epsom track. You need a balanced horse with speed and he is one of those.”
Sixth Race: The Investec Surrey Stakes - Placed Quotes
YAA WAYL CHEERS JARVIS
Trainer Michael Jarvis swiftly put the disappointment of Sajjhaa’s performance in the Investec Oaks behind him, pronouncing his pleasure at the run of Yaa Wayl, who finished second, beaten one and three-quarter lengths, to the Godolphin-owned Shakespearean in the Investec Surrey Stakes.
“He ran very well and was beaten by what I think was a very decent horse. I’m very happy with that, which must be a career best for the horse, I would think,” said Jarvis.
“He’s by Whipper and any cut in the ground he would appreciate very much. He showed last year [at Haydock and Doncaster] that he goes in easier ground and Philip [Robinson] said that the ground was quick enough for him today,” he added.
Andrew Balding, trainer of Mon Cadeaux, who placed third, also felt the ground might have been riding a little quick for his horse. Balding suggested that the Jersey Stakes, over seven furlongs at Ascot, could be a possible option for Mon Cadeaux.

Seventh race - The Investec Opportunity Handicap - Winner’s quotes
OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS FOR IMPROVING CANSILI STAR
Michael Jarvis has his horses in fine form at present and Cansili Star retained his unbeaten tag for the season when taking the final race on Investec Ladies’ day, the seven-furlong Investec Opportunity Handicap, winning by a neck from Treadwell.
“He promised things last year but he just wasn’t finishing off his races,” said Jarvis. “But he’s learning well and really finished strongly today.”
He added: “He loved this ground and he’s going to start creeping up the handicap now. We’ll have to look for another seven-furlong handicap on this sort of ground and see what he can do.”

PALACE PLAN FOR GAME TREADWELL
Cansili Star won his second race of the season when landing the Investec Opportunity Stakes (Handicap), holding the game Treadwell by a neck.
Treadwell’s trainer Jamie Osborne, said: “I’m not sure many three-year-olds have gone for the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, but I think that would be the plan now.
“The stiffer seven furlongs there should suit him, and they’ll go flat out.”
Trainer Richard Hannon, who saddled third-placed Kajima, said: “He’s run well, although he didn’t have all the room in the world. We’ll look for another handicap for him.”

EPSOM ESTIMATES CROWD ON INVESTEC OAKS DAY UP SHARPLY AT 23,500
Today’s crowd on Investec Ladies Day was up sharply at 23,500, as against 17,800 last year.
The figures are estimated with exact numbers on the Hill not known but the number of cars and bar sales give a good guide.
Rupert Trevelyan, managing director of Epsom Downs Racecourse, is delighted with the attendance.
He said: “It has been a real pleasure to see so many people having great fun on a lovely day with splendid racing.
“Our hospitality figures are up, the numbers in the grandstands are just ahead of last year and the crowd on the Hill is way up.
“We have lots of facilities on the Hill and the bars have certainly been more active there, with a lot of champagne sold.”
totesport BETTING NEWS - Jan Vermeer on the drift on the eve of Investec Derby
Epsom’s official betting partner totesport have pushed out Jan Vermeer to 9/4 (from 7/4) on the eve of the Investec Derby but Aidan O’Brien’s colt still heads the market ahead of stablemate Midas Touch at 5/1.
O’Brien has three horses entered in the 1m 4f classic and totesport make it an 11/10 chance that the Ballydoyle maestro trains the winner of the race whilst it’s a 4/6 shot that the winner comes from the rest of the field.
“The money for Jan Vermeer seems to have dried up since the huge plunge on the horse a week ago and it’s the likes of his stablemate Midas Touch and the supplemented Rewilding that punters are more interested in on the eve of the Derby,” said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.
Workforce is an 11/2 shot to give Sir Michael Stoute his fourth Derby victory whilst Rewilding is next in the market at 13/2.
Investec Derby - totesport bet: 9/4 Jan Vermeer, 5 Midas Touch, 11/2 Workforce, 13/2 Rewilding, 7 Bullet Train, 12 Azmeel, 18 Al Zir, 25 Coordinated Cut, 33 Ted Spread, 66 Buzzword, Hot Prospect, 150 At First Sight.

GROUND UPDATE
The going after racing remains GOOD, GOOD TO FIRM IN PLACES, after Investec Ladies Day.
Andrew Cooper, Director of Racing and Clerk of the Course at Epsom Downs, will take a decision on whether to water any part of the track at about 7pm this evening after walking the course.
MUM KNOWS BEST WHEN IT COMES TO DRESS
Laura Gleich from Melbourne in Australia proved best of the dressed when landing today’s Style on the Downs Competition at Epsom.
Her stunning outfit, comprising a turquoise jacket over a colourful dress, complemented by a black fascinator hat and clutch bag, was designed and made by her mum, Annette.
Laura’s prize is a five-day trip to Galway races during which she will enjoy plenty of luxuries while staying at a fabulous hotel courtesy of Tourism Ireland. Runner-up Susan Murphy, who won the event two years ago, and third-placed Kate Hancock, who wore a 1950s ensemble, will enjoy three-day holidays in the Emerald Isle.
Gleich, a model who is working in the South of France, said: “I’ve never been to Ireland and so I’m really excited about going there.
“This is my first trip to Epsom, and I decided to enter the competition a few months ago after my friend, Lisa Tan, won it last year. Lisa is also from Melbourne, and we met each other at the races.
“My mum designs and makes outfits for a hobby - it took her three or four days to make this one, but she had no idea I would wear it in a competition. She just made it as something for me to wear while in Europe.”
JOCKEYS FINED FOR ARRIVING LATE IN PARADE RING AHEAD OF INVESTEC CORONATION CUP
