GOLDIE SWEATING OVER HAWKEYETHENOO’S BID FOR Bluesquare.com STEWARDS’ CUP AT GOODWOOD....TREADWELL AMONG OSBORNE’S totesport MILE QUARTET

GOLDIE SWEATING OVER HAWKEYETHENOO’S BID FOR Bluesquare.com STEWARDS’ CUP AT GOODWOOD

Scottish trainer Jim Goldie faces an anxious wait to see if Hawkeyethenoo makes the line up for this year’s £100,000 Bluesquare.com Stewards’ Cup after the sprinter was allotted 8st 5lb for the prestigious six-furlong heritage handicap, one of the highlights at Glorious Goodwood on Saturday, July 31.

The progressive four-year-old, currently the 10/1 co-favourite with the race sponsor, started this season with a pair of comfortable wins, including when beating Enact in a competitive handicap at Newmarket’s Guineas meeting, but has endured little luck in running on his two subsequent appearances.

He was beaten a neck in the Epsom Dash on Derby Day, when intended jockey Kieren Fallon missed the ride after being struck in traffic, and took third from an unfavourable high draw on his latest start in a premier handicap at the Curragh on Irish Derby Day, June 27.

Goldie reported this morning: “Hawkeyethenoo came out of his race at the weekend in good shape. We have given him a quiet few days and he looks fine at the moment.

“He ran very well in Ireland but it was a difficult race to judge - he had a bad draw and fared best out of his group but was chasing a horse at the end that he was never going to catch.

“He nearly got through to win at Epsom, but Ted Durcan just had to switch near the line and it cost us a little bit of momentum. It wasn’t the jockey’s fault and it’s just the way our horse runs his races. I am sure that he was the best horse on the day but it’s no use crying over spilt milk.

“Ideally, we would have liked to have gone up a few pounds after his Curragh run, to guarantee our place in the Bluesquare.com Stewards’ Cup, as I think that he would have needed to be rated around 95 to make the final line up.

“We will aim to run him in the Scottish Stewards’ Cup at Hamilton on July 16, when he can hopefully pick up a penalty and make it to Goodwood. You really need to be a Group or Listed class horse to get into these top handicaps and I hope that we haven’t reached the ceiling with Hawkeyethenoo.

“He’s a talented horse and he is definitely going the right way. Being a Scotsman, I would love to aim for the Bluesquare.com Stewards’ Cup and then bring him back for the Ayr Gold Cup in September. Depending on how he got on, we might look at some of the big Group sprints at the end of the season, and I wouldn’t discount entering him for the Prix de l’Abbaye.”

Haweyethenoo currently heads the market with three other horses including Genki (9st 3lb), who stormed through the mist to take the spoils last year and gave his trainer Roger Charlton a third victory in the contest.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Enact (8st 12lb) could re-oppose his Newmarket conqueror, while Jeremy Noseda may be represented by Laddies Poker Two (9st 8lb), who belied an absence of 610 days to post an emphatic success in the Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot.

Other notable contenders include recent Newcastle scorer Jonny Mudball (12/1 & 8st 13lb), trained by Tom Dascombe, and Victoire de Lyphar (12/1 & 8st 6lb), who scored in a York heritage handicap on June 12 and is one of nine entries from the stable of David Nicholls.

Bluesquare.com Stewards’ Cup - sponsor’s bet:

10/1 Enact, 10/1 Genki, 10/1 Hawkeyethenoo, 10/1 Laddies Poker Two, 12/1 Jonny Mudball, 12/1 Victoire de Lyphar, 14/1 Himalya, 14/1 Markab, 14/1 Palace Moon, 14/1 Striking Spirit, 16/1 Dever Dream, 16/1 Ingleby Lady, 16/1 Knot In Wood, 16/1 Noverre To Go, 20/1 Deacon Blues, 20/1 Full Of Hope, 20/1 Hitchens, 20/1 Irish Heartbeat, 20/1 Iver Bridge Lad, 20/1 Jimmy Styles, 20/1 Prime Defender, 20/1 Sunraider

TREADWELL AMONG OSBORNE’S totesport MILE QUARTET

- totesport MILE ATTRACTS 77 CLASSY ENTRIES

Treadwell gave Jamie Osborne a high-profile victory in the Buckingham Palace Handicap at Royal Ascot and the classy three-year-old is among a quartet from the trainer’s Kingsdown Stables engaged in the totesport Mile at Glorious Goodwood on Friday, July 30.

Treadwell is entered alongside stablemates Aspectus, Cloudy Start and Rakaan among a total of 77 entries for the heritage handicap revealed today, Wednesday, June 30.

Osborne said today: “Treadwell is a speculative entry at the moment. There are plenty of options in the pipeline for him and the totesport Mile is one of them.

“He hasn’t raced beyond seven furlongs yet but the mile looks to be within his compass and if he goes there he certainly has a chance.”

Aspectus, a Group Two winner in Germany during the 2006 season and victorious in the Group Three Badener Meile at Baden-Baden last term, joined Osborne ahead of this season and is bidding to bounce back from a below-par effort at Nottingham in May.

The trainer continued: “Aspectus is most likely to run. He went to Dubai earlier in the year and came back with a few little niggles. He wasn’t quite over them when he ran at Nottingham last time but he is pleasing me now. He is a quality horse who has dropped to a nice mark.

“Cloudy Start ran well in the totesport Mile last year as a three-year-old to finish seventh. He and Rakaan have been entered and could go there.

“Treadwell gave us all a thrill at Ascot and it would be nice to have more days like that. The horses are going well at the moment, we just need more of them.”

Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor could bid for a second triumph, having scored with Ancient World in 2004. He has entered Royal Hunt Cup victor Invisible Man, as well as In Footlights and Sirocco Breeze.

The Gerard Butler-trained Beauchamp Xerxes won over the course and distance when defeating the Richard Hannon-trained Vitznau by a head to land the Listed totesport.com Stakes on May 22.

Mark Johnston has landed the totesport mile on three occasions, including last year with Laa Rayb. The Middleham handler has engaged eight this time, among them Investec Mile hero Tartan Gigha, recent Newcastle winner and course victor Tartan Gunna, Royal Hunt Cup third St Moritz, recent Curragh handicap winner Sea Lord and Hacienda.

Newmarket trainer Luca Cumani could have a strong hand with Group Three winner Summit Surge, Group Three Diomed Stakes third Mabait, Acrostic, Day Of The Eagle and Axiom, who was successful at last year’s Glorious Goodwood in the EBF Kennels Classified Stakes.

Spectait landed the totesport mile in 2006 for trainer Sir Mark Prescott and the eight-year-old, runner-up in 2009, could again bid for a repeat in the care of Jonjo O’Neill.

Oasis Dancer rewarded connections when winning the lucrative Tattersalls Timeform Million in 2009 and returned to Newmarket for a handicap victory in May for trainer Ralph Beckett, while the Ed Dunlop-trained Fareer won the Britannia Handicap last year and was victorious in Listed company at York on May 13.

The David Simcock-trained Suruor won the XL Insurance Heritage Handicap over seven furlongs at Glorious Goodwood last year, while the Clive Brittain-trained Al Muheer captured his biggest success in the 2009 renewal of the competitive Abu Dhabi International Stakes at Ascot.

Roger Charlton landed back-to-back wins with Third Set in 2007 and Fifteen Love in 2008. The Beckhampton trainer has entered Proponent this time, while the Barry Hills-trained entry includes Group Three Craven Stakes third Critical Moment, Group Three Dee Stakes fourth Tamaathul and Ransome Note, victorious in the Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot last month.

Richard Fahey’s string is in fine form this season and the North Yorkshire handler has entered Lincoln Handicap runner-up Prime Exhibit and Spring Mile winner Irish Heartbeat.

Swift Gift, the 2009 Victoria Cup winner, showed his well-being when a close sixth to Treadwell in the Buckingham Palace Handicap at Royal Ascot on June 18 for trainer Brian Meehan.

Sir Michael Stoute could rely on Desert Creek, John Gosden has entered the unexposed Man Of Action and Bullwhip, while Webbow, fourth to Laa Rayb in 2009, could run for Nigel Tinkler.

Weights for the totesport Mile will be revealed on Wednesday, July 7.
