DEAUVILLE FLYER HEADS MARKET FOR NORTHUMBERLAND PLATE

A field of 49 horses have been left in the John Smith’s Northumberland Plate at Newcastle on Saturday and totesport make Deauville Flyer the 8/1 favourite.

Tim Easterby’s gelding has been in decent nick so far this season and has won his last two starts at York, including when stepped back up to two miles a couple of weeks ago.

The David Pipe-trained pair of Mamlook and Junior are next in the market at 9/1 alongside Overturn.

Mamlook was last seen when taking the totesport Chester Cup back in May whilst Junior was the runaway winner of the Ascot Stakes last weekend at the Royal meeting. However, it is the former that is likely to represent the Pipe stable as the race could come a little too soon for Junior.

Overturn hasn’t been seen on the level since October of last year but Donald McCain’s gelding has made giant strides over hurdles since, taking the Scottish Champion Hurdle on his penultimate start before finishing second in the Swinton Hurdle at Haydock.

“Deauville Flyer has looked very progressive on his previous two starts and the manner in which he stormed to victory at York last time out when stepped back up to two miles suggests there is plenty more to come,” said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.

“However, Overturn is a very interesting contender given his exploits over hurdles recently and it looks another typically competitive renewal of the ‘Pitmen’s Derby’ in which very few can be ruled out.”

Bernie The Bolt, Chiberta King and Red Cadeaux are next in the market at 11/1 whilst Ascot Stakes runner-up Elyaadi is alongside 12/1 shot Halla San in the betting.
