Charles Barnett, Chief Executive of Ascot Racecourse, commented: “Once again we have ended the Royal Meeting on a real high with a crowd well into the seventy thousands. We are delighted to have seen a 2 per cent increase on the crowd this week compared to 2009.

“What has been particularly pleasing across the whole site has been a significant increase in spend of about 15 per cent compared to last year.

“On the track we have seen some sparkling performances from Goldikova’s opening win in the Queen Anne for France through to a familiar driving finish from Ryan Moore in the Queen Alexandra to wrestle the Arora Hotels Top Jockey Trophy from Johnny Murtagh right on the line.

“Once again we have welcomed horses from all over the world with the performance of the Americans arguably the most noteworthy. Although not winning, they have gone away with three thirds including Kinsale King’s great run behind the Aussie import Starspangledbanner in a Golden Jubilee Stakes which saw runners from no fewer than six nations.

“Away from the track, our many new initiatives have been very well received - from the stunning statues in the Royal Enclosure and Grandstand to our new iphone app which saw 5,000 registrations over the week.

“All in all, it has been a tremendous and memorable week with a great sense of fun from what I have seen in all the enclosures.”

MOORE TAKES TITLE AFTER BERGO

Champion jockey Ryan Moore won the concluding Queen Alexandra Stakes aboard Bergo and landed the Arora Hotels Trophy for leading rider at Royal Ascot this year.

It was Moore’s fourth success of the week, equalling the total of Johnny Murtagh, but he took the title having partnered five seconds, compared to four for Murtagh.

The winner was a first Royal Ascot success for Moore’s trainer father Gary and the jockey admitted that meant as much to him as the title.

“Riding a winner for the old man means a lot to me, especially at Ascot because it’s important to him,” said Moore. “I have to admit that for me personally that means more than getting the top jockey accolade. But this is the biggest week of our year in racing, it’s very competitive and winning the top races is what it’s all about.

“Bergo is a very honest horse and he battled hard despite not enjoying the conditions. I wasn’t so happy on him going down the hill but he picked up on the rising ground.”

Richard Hannon was earlier presented by the Queen with the Arora Hotels Trophy for leading trainer at Royal Ascot this year.

Like Aidan O’Brien, Hannon had three wins at the meeting but had five seconds compared to two for O’Brien.

SATURDAY TURNOVER INCREASE OF 5% ROUNDS OFF A FANTASTIC WEEK FOR TOTEPOOL

Total totepool turnover on the final day of Royal Ascot was up 5% at £1,519,016 compared to £1,443,066 in 2009.

This afternoon’s figure rounds off a fantastic week for totepool, who saw their turnover better that of 2009 on every day of the Royal meeting. A total of £7,128,188 was wagered throughout Royal Ascot which was a total increase of 6.9% on 2009.

“We’re extremely encouraged by this year’s figures at Royal Ascot which has seen our increased marketing efforts and presence on the racecourse bear fruit,’ said totepool spokesman George Primarolo. “It may not have been a great week for the off-course layers but punters have benefited from extra value from totewin with 20 out of the 30 races returning more than the official SP.”

There were no winners of this afternoon’s totejackpot which means there is a rollover of £24,074 carried forward to Sunday’s meeting at Hereford.

Royal Ascot 2010 - totepool turnover

Day 2: £1,108,534 +1.6%

Day 3: £1,619,187 +1%

ANOTHER RIGHT-ROYAL TREAT FOR FANS OF RACING

Brilliant racing, international competition, fine weather, fabulous fashions and a rise in attendance sum up another five-star show at this year’s Royal Ascot.

The staging of three Group One races to open the meeting opposes traditional belief that events should build to a crescendo, but the formula creates a momentum which carries across the following four days - and when a filly like Goldikova is the opening act you have a super-star to grace any Royal occasion.

French-trained Goldikova’s close-run victory over Britain’s leading miler Paco Boy in the Queen Anne Stakes will linger as one of the highlights of the decade at Royal Ascot, but there have been many other memorable moments at the meeting.

Two riveting one-on-one battles in the week’s two Pattern staying races will linger in the memory. Rite Of Passage and Age Of Aquarius thrilled us in the Gold Cup on Thursday, and a day later three-year-olds Mikhail Glinka and Theology gave a similar performance when separated by a nose in the Queen’s Vase. If anyone dismisses staying races as irrelevant in an age when speed rules they should be shown clips of these two contests - you will rarely find the climax to a horse race as exciting.

Tuesday’s St James’s Palace Stakes is a common target for horses who have run in the Guineas, but the one, two, three from this year’s Newmarket Classic gave the race added gloss. Canford Cliffs gained revenge on both Dick Turpin and Makfi, initiating a revered double for trainer Richard Hannon and jockey Richard Hughes who then won the Coventry Stakes with Strong Suit.

Royal Ascot’s two big sprint races have towered in importance by virtue of increased prize money, rises in grade and their place in the Global Sprint Challenge which helps attract runners from around the world. Today’s Golden Jubilee Stakes promises to be a cracker, while Tuesday’s King’s Stand Stakes produced a double winner in Equiano, who landed the same race two years ago.

His win was a triumph not only for trainer Barry Hills and his jockey son Michael - who subsequently won Thursday’s Britannia Handicap with Ransom Note - but also for the Hertfordshire-based Newsells Park Stud, which a week earlier announced it would stand Equiano as a stallion next year. Cue one winner, cue two, then three, for Newsells Park also bred (and owned) Strawberrydaiquiri, winner of Wednesday’s Windsor Forest Stakes, and also Rite Of Passage.

Long-distance challengers have yet to win at the meeting, but following Goldikova’s success France gained another top-grade race when Byword took the Prince of Wales’s Stakes - he carried the colours of Prince Khalid Abdulla, as did runner-up Twice Over - while Ireland has also taken two Group One contests, thanks to Rite Of Passage and the filly Lillie Langtry, who won Friday’s Coronation Stakes.

All these horses have contributed to another wonderful Royal Ascot, one where the jockeys have heaped praise on the quality of the ground. It has been quick, but safe, and with a breezy tail wind no fewer than four track records have been broken.

It could be said that Royal Ascot is finishing all too quickly.

THE FACES OF ASCOT 2010

The first male Face of Ascot is 20-year-old Alex Sparks, a butcher from Essex, who was spotted by Models 1 scouts in the Silver Ring on Wednesday.

The third female Face of Ascot is Jennifer Hunter, a 20-year-old medical student at Oxford who comes from Reading and was picked out by Models 1 scouts in the Grandstand on Tuesday.

Invited back to Royal Ascot today for a full makeover, they were unveiled live on BBC Television at 3.15pm as the winner’s of this year’s Face of Ascot.

Jennifer is wearing a dress from House of Fraser’s Pied a Terre range and an Ilda di Vico hat.

Alex is in full morning dress provided by Moss Bros.

Jennifer said: “It was such a shock and an incredibly surreal experience to be chosen. It has been such a fun day today - I have never modelled before so this is very exciting.”

Alex remarked: “I don’t get the chance to dress like this so I am really overwhelmed - I cannot take it all in. I am really shocked but it is going to be really good to be a face of Ascot.”

BRITTAIN SETS KENTUCKY DATE FOR ZAIDAN

Clive Brittain has his heart set on a garland of roses next May after pinpointing the 2011 Kentucky Derby as a potential target for impressive Chesham Stakes hero Zaidan.

The Saeed Manana-owned colt, a 7/1 shot, burst clear of the field under Seb Sanders to register a three-length victory in the seven-furlong contest. He is a 33/1 shot with Paddy Power for the Kentucky Derby.

Brittain, who saddled Bold Arrangement to finish second in the 1986 US Triple Crown race, said: “As always being the dreamer, our long term plan is the Kentucky Derby.

“At Doncaster and the way he is at home, he is so switched off and laid back, but I have seen a different horse here. He has got himself a little bit excited but there is plenty of time to settle him down.

“We have always thought he was a decent horse and today was the proving. I was bit concerned because he was on his toes and squealing in the paddock, so he revealed a side to himself that we don’t see at home.

“He was a bit keen cantering down to the start but the racecourse is what it is all about. The proof of the pudding is here.

“We will probably go for a Group race now and I said that next time I went back to Kentucky with a horse, it will be one with a chance and this one could be it.

“I’ve got a fist of very nice two-year-old colts and I’ve been sitting deciding which one would go for the Guineas, which one for the Kentucky Derby and all the rest of it. If Saeed Manana and Sheikh Mohammed give the go-ahead for Kentucky, we could do it.”

Sanders made smooth progress aboard the Street Cry colt, stripping paint down the stands’ side rail before unleashing his mount between horses to take the lead above the distance.

He commented: “He was very edgy when I got on him and, to be fair, it took me about four or five furlongs cantering down to get him where I wanted because he set off quite strongly.

“He was getting edgy at the start so my plan was to get in straight away and when they headed for the stands’ rail, I thought that he was a nice horse and hopefully we would get the run. I always had plenty of horse to get out at any stage that I wanted.

“I rode him first time over five furlongs and it took two furlongs for the penny to drop. He has done the same today as he did on that occasion - he has just scythed through them and won very well.

“To be honest, he took me there too soon and travelling too well but when the gap appeared two out, I had to take it. I would have loved to have been dropped in but, when the gaps come at that stage of the race, you have got to take the opportunity when it comes.”

FIRST RACE PLACED QUOTES
CHESHAM STAKES (LISTED)

SONNING ROSE DELIGHTS CHANNON

Trainer Mick Channon was pleased with the run of Sonning Rose, who finished three lengths second to Zaidan in the Chesham Stakes.

“She maybe didn’t have the best of luck early on but I was thrilled with that and the winner did it nicely,” said Channon. “She’s not the biggest filly but she’s well made and I hope we can go on and win a Listed race at least.”

Kentucky-based trainer Kenny McPeek was happy to have made the trip to Ascot after Casper’s Touch finished third. McPeek’s Tiz My Time had filled the same position in Friday’s Albany Stakes while Noble’s Promise came fifth in Tuesday’s St James’s Palace Stakes.

“Coming over here was a test for us. I knew my horses had talent but I wasn’t sure how deep the water was here,” said McPeek. “And if I’ve got good enough horses I’ll be back here again.

“I actually thought this horse would win today so his good run is no surprise to me. He’s professional and easy to handle and if somebody offered the right amount of money for him we’d entertain anything.

“But the plan is to probably ship him back to New York and run him in something at Saratoga.”

GOING MAINTAINS THUMBS-UP FROM FIRST-RACE JOCKEYS

Royal Ascot’s clerk of the course Chris Stickels opted not to water the course last night, but 1.2mm of overnight rain had prevented the ground getting any quicker, said jockeys who rode in the first.

Seb Sanders, who rode the winner, Zaidan, said: “It’s good ground. It’s ridden like good ground in the way the horses have acted on it.”

Alan Munro, who rode the runner-up, Sonning Rose, said: “Did they water? It’s slower than yesterday, but it rides lovely.”

Paul Hanagan said: “There’s not much change from yesterday - it’s more or less just the same.”

Kieren Fallon said: “It’s the same. It’s good, fast ground, but safe.”

Robert Winston said: “It’s lovely ground.”

Jamie Spencer said: “It’s perfect.”

David Probert, said: “It’s lovely ground.”

Tom Queally said: “It’s riding well.”

Neil Callan said: “It’s fast ground, but safe.”

Johnny Murtagh said: “Beautiful ground”

SECOND RACE WINNING QUOTES
HARDWICKE STAKES (GROUP 2)

HARBINGER BRINGS DOOM FOR BOOKIES

Harbinger continued a great week for punters when become the 10th winning clear or joint favourite to score at this year’s Royal Ascot when landing the Hardwicke Stakes at odds of 8/11.

“He was very professional today in the way he travelled so well. We were very thrilled with him at Newbury and it was a good performance in the Ormonde at Chester - it was more workmanlike but Chester is a tight track and he is a big, galloping horse,” said winning trainer Sir Michael Stoute.

“We need to sit down and have a good old chat about what the best thing is to do now. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes is a long way off but we’ll have to go for a Group One now with him,”

It was a third win of the week for Highclere Thoroughbred Racing and the partnership’s managing director Harry Herbert said: “Sir Michael has the Derby winner (Workforce) in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and if he wants to run Harbinger in the same race, we certainly wouldn’t put him off.

“Sir Michael wouldn’t commit to the King George, he just gave us one of his silences when it was mentioned! But it’s a race we would seriously consider although I’m sure Sir Michael would steer us elsewhere if he thought Workforce was unbeatable.

“He is such an exciting horse. Looking at him in the parade ring today, you could see how well he was progressing and Ryan (Moore) will tell you how impressive he was.

“It was all looking very good after he won the Gordon Stakes last season and Sir Michael kept saying that he was next year’s horse and that everybody should be patient. I think he still expected him to win the Great Voltiguer but something very odd happened that day - whether he had a palate scenario when it possibly flipped and stopped his airway.

“That seemed the most likely situation so he had a very minor operation done over the winter and he has come out this season and has been a different horse. Physically he is different and the chat has been good for some time but to have a horse like this is very, very special and we know how lucky we are.

“Going to see him morning after morning on the gallops in Newmarket has been really special and something his owners will never forget.

“It has been an incredible week to have three winners and a short head second in the Queen’s Vase from four or five runners, and with Martyr still to come. It’s incredible and the lovely thing is that is different syndicates each time. There are 12 people involved with this horse and 20 with some of the others, so a lot of people are getting a crack at the fun. That’s what you aspire to do when you set up a syndicate.

Ryan Moore added: “He did that well. He got a few bumps early on and it wasn’t as smooth as I would have liked. It just steadied the pace up and I had to get him rolling a bit sooner than I planned. He quickened up very well and has done that easily - he has beaten inferior horses and he enjoyed it. He is a pleasure to ride and a very straightforward horse.

“I just want to say well done to the Highclere team, with three winners this week and a second as well.”

SECOND RACE QUOTES
HARDWICKE STAKES

NO RUNNING TO PONTEFRACT FOR IMPROVING DUNCAN

There was no disgrace for the placed horses who chased home runaway winner Harbinger in the Hardwicke Stakes, and their trainers had no complaints.

Harbinger beat Duncan by three and a half lengths, while Barshiba was another six lengths behind in third.

John Gosden, who trains Duncan for Philippa Cooper’s Normandie Stud, said: “He came from last and went right through the field like a knife through butter, but somebody [Harbinger] flew, which is not surprising. We’re really happy and I liked the way he was closing down the winner.

“Our horse sprung a hind shoe on his last run [at Ascot, when second to Barshiba] and it was bothering him. It seemed like a bit of a disaster because we expected him to win and he didn’t. We had the courage not to run off to Pontefract tomorrow, but to come here and he’s run a blinder.

“It was a disappointment when he was beaten, but he’s back to his best. We have no immediate plans other than to find the right type of race.”

David Elsworth, who trains Barshiba for Jeff Smith, said: “She ran well and I feel there’s a little more to come. When she beat Duncan here he didn’t run his race and I think that was a softer contest. It led us into thinking she had come to her best earlier than she normally does. I was pleased with her.”

Asked about plans for Barshiba, Elsworth said: “I mentioned Melbourne to Jeff, and he said, ‘Talk to the hand - the face ain’t listening’!”

THIRD RACE WINNING QUOTES
GOLDEN JUBILEE STAKES

INITIAL QUOTES AFTER GOLDEN JUBILEE STAKES

Following Starspangledbanner’s victory in the Golden Jubilee Stakes, connections were full of praise for the Australian-bred Choisir colt.

Jockey Johnny Murtagh said: “Aidan was very confident coming into this race. He told me to just jump him out, let him use that stride, and not to be anxious when I got to the two, wait until I got to furlong and a half out and when I went for him, Aidan thought that when I went for him, he should respond.

“Everything just worked perfectly. I had a lovely draw - he jumped well, travelled really well. There was a good strong gallop all of the way and I sensed them coming at the two but when I let him go, he really ran straight up the rail and responded.

“He responded very well and went right to the line - I couldn’t pull him up after the race. I think that he is a great horse.

“He’s very similar to Choisir. They are both big, strong but when I rode Starspangledbanner today, he was different - he was in a different zone and there was about 20 lengths improvement in him from his last run York.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien added: “Before York he was only half-speeding but his half-speeding was unbelievable. He was just ready to start at York and got tired but his work since then has been incredible - his second last furlong in his final piece of work was just under nine and a half seconds, which I have never seen before.

“When I horse can do that kind of work, we’ve never seen it, and he is without doubt the fastest sprinter I have trained. To go that fast, furlong by furlong, you don’t record those kinds of time - we have never recorded them, anyway.

“Hopefully he will go for the July Cup now and we would really look forward to that. He is an incredible sprinter.

“Thanks to everyone for being so patient all year. We started slow at the start of the week they were obviously very slow but Johnny was brilliant yesterday and brilliant again today. It’s credit to everybody.”

THIRD RACE QUOTES
GOLDEN JUBILEE STAKES

STUD POSSIBILITY FOR STAR

Mightily-impressive Golden Jubilee Stakes winner Starspangledbanner might be retired to stud in Australia following next month’s Darley July Cup.

That possibility was voiced by part-owner John Magnier, head of Ireland’s Coolmore Stud and its Australian base of the same name.

Magnier said: “It was the plan for him to go to stud down there this summer [before the Coolmore team bought into the horse], but obviously we will now have to see what Derrick [Smith] and Michael [Tabor] want to do with him. They can earn some money back from him [at stud] or race him - it’s up to them.

“If he is to go to stud he would pretty well have to give up racing now, although he could probably run in the [Darley] July Cup and go then. Derrick and Michael are interested in the racing side rather than the breeding side, so I’d say if Aidan recommended he should stay in training the probability is they would do that. It’s not all about the money for Michael and Derrick, it’s about the racing.”

He added: “Ascot has done a great job to get an international field together for today’s race. You can feel it’s an international event. We haven’t thought about going overseas for other races [in the Global Sprint Challenge], but it’s a good concept.”

O’Brien said: “It’s a privilege to have him, if only for a few races, but the lads will decide whether they want to stand him at stud this season or next.”

He added: ”It’s a relief when things like this happen because the lads [Messrs Magnier, Tabor and Smith] put a lot into it and they have to get results to keep the whole business going. I’m just delighted to be back in the winner’s enclosure.”

Adding to his eulogies for Starspangledbanner, O’Brien said: “He’s very quick, but he was like that before we got him [when trained in Australia by Leon Corstens]. He came from Australia with a massive reputation and we were lucky to get him.

“I was hoping a horse was going to lead him today, but when you’ve got a horse that can do his sort of fractions, who’s going to lead?

“What’s so incredible is this horse got a mile in Australia and we knew if he hit the gate today nothing was going to lead him - and having won over a mile he wasn’t going to be stopping either. He’s a great horse.”

Starspangledbanner was only fifth in the Duke Of York Stakes on his first run for O’Brien, who said: “He had a break after he first came to us so we could get a feel for him. He needed the run at York, but since then the fractions he’s been doing have been so incredible. His reflexes are so fast.

“Colm O’Donoghue rides him every day and he would go by me when I’m sitting in my Jeep in the morning and I’ve never seen anything so fast.”

The possibility of Australia’s top sprinter Denman taking on Starspangledbanner in the Darley July Cup does not induce fear in O’Brien, who said: “We’re delighted if he comes over, but we’ve never had anything like this fellow. He works like a quarter horse. You saw today what we see at home - and I don’t want to be accused of hyping him.”

Timing Starspangledbanner on Ballydoyle’s gallops raised a few question marks said O’Brien, adding: “Tom Curtis who does the times had to go back and check them to see if the GPS system was correct.”

THIRD RACE PLACE QUOTES

Golden Jubilee Stakes (Group One)

PLACED CONNECTIONS TAKE AIM AT DARLEY JULY CUP

Society Rock could step out at Newmarket for the Group One Darley July Cup on Friday, July 9, after the 50/1 outsider clinched the runner-up berth in the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes, a length and three quarters behind the victorious Starspangledbanner.

Trainer James Fanshawe said: “I’m really chuffed with him. I was a bit disappointed at Newbury last time but the race probably came a bit quick for him.

“He has a great turn-of-foot and likes that style of race - he has to be held up.

“He is in the July Cup and his owner, Simon Gibson, would love him to run there as he is local to Newmarket, but given that I ran him back too quick at Newbury, we will see how he is before making any decision.”

Carl O’Callaghan was delighted with the run of US raider Kinsale King and the trainer is now setting his sights on the Group One Darley July Cup at Newmarket next month for his Dubai Golden Shaheen hero.

The California-based Irishman saddled the 8/1 shot to clinch third, just over a length and three quarters behind the victor.

He said: “July, here we come! That will tighten him up a bit for Newmarket. We will take it one step at a time. I don’t like to run him back too close.

“We’re happy - third is a win for us. He ran a very good race against a good winner.”

Brett Doyle, who partnered the 13th home, Hong Kong raider Joy And Fun, revealed: “He seemed to go lame mid-race.”

Tye Angland, rider of 14th-placed Australian challenger Alverta, said: “She gave me a pretty nice ride but just ran out of puff.”

Jockey Darren Beadman, 22nd aboard Happy Zero, commented: “He was the first horse beaten, it was very uncharacteristic for him. I don’t know what happened and he pulled up okay after the race.”

FOURTH RACE WIN QUOTES

Wokingham Handicap
LADDIES LANDS WOKINGHAM GAMBLE

Laddies Poker Two defied a 610-day absence to land a huge gamble in the Wokingham Handicap for trainer Jeremy Noseda and jockey Johnny Murtagh.

The Choisir mare, available at 25/1 last week but sent off the 9/2 favourite after being backed in from 10/1 this morning, stormed to a two and a half-length victory from Striking Spirit in the six-furlong contest.

Noseda said: “This plan was hatched in December, 2008. She got a bad injury in the spring of 2009, which meant that she had the year off. So the plan got delayed another year - it has been a long time. Firstly, for the plan, I must thank Mike Dillon, who first put the idea in my mind.”

“We are a year late and it’s a huge thank you to my staff at home. The filly has been extremely tough to train and Mick, who rides her out every day, has done a great job and Sharaz, who is the head man in charge, has done a great job to keep her in one piece. It has been a long plan over a long period of time and, to get her here on the day, it has been a huge team effort.

“It’s always a delight to have a winner at Royal Ascot and it’s a pleasure to bring a filly like that back after that sort of lay off to win a race like this.

“It’s also a big thank you to John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith for their patience. It takes owners a lot of patience not to see them on the racetrack and I am delighted that their patience has been rewarded today.

“I didn’t have a penny on her. There were a lot of people telling me to back her but I didn’t back Forgotten Voice in the Royal Hunt Cup last year - all I want them to do is win and, if their owners are happy, if they back them and are happy, then that is all that matters.

“It’s a cliche, but this was the plan. I think that she can go on and it is within her compass to win a Stakes race and we will go from there.

“I always felt I could get her here and do it. The doubts slipped into my mind today so it gives me huge satisfaction. It’s always a special kick to win at Royal Ascot.

“I thought about running her three weeks ago and consulted Michael Tabor who asked if I could get her ready for today without a run. I said I think so.”

Murtagh, who jumped to the top of the Arora Leading Jockey standings with four wins, said: “For once, I did everything that the trainer told me - he said to drop her in, get her relaxed, she has one good kick and she might go a little bit right. The race went very smoothly for me and she travelled really well.

“I was going to go between two horses and Adrian’s (Nicholls) just drifted in so I said okay and she really came back on the bridle. She hit the front a furlong out and she has won well. As Jeremy says, it was a lot of hard work and, while the jockey gets all of the praise, the job was easy for me today.

“Remember the motto - the river doesn’t need pushing!”

WOKINGHAM HANDICAP

STEWARDS NEXT STOP FOR STRIKING

A trip to Goodwood is likely to be next on the cards for Striking Spirt after he finished two and a half lengths second to the facile winner Laddies Poker Two in the Wokingham Handicap.

“He’s run a blinder and I’ll take him home and have a think about what we do next,” said the runner-up’s trainer David Nicholls. “I should think we’ll go for the Stewards’ Cup and we might take him abroad at some stage. There are a couple of races in Ireland that might suit him.”

Palace Moon ran a great race on his first start for trainer William Knight when finishing third.

“He only arrived with me on Thursday morning so we’re still learning but I’m delighted with that,” said Knight. “He was a bit slowly away so he was quite far back but followed the winner through and ran a fair race.

“Kieren (Fallon) said that we should consider trying seven furlongs next with him so I’ll have a chat with his owner.”

IMPOSING PERFORMANCE BY CILL

Cill Rialaig, who like Gold Cup winner Rite Of Passage began her career in a bumper, held off the fast-finishing Imposing to land the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap for trainer Hughie Morrison.

“I thought she ran a bit fresh when she was second on Derby Day but she went up 1lb and got in at the bottom of the handicap,” said Morrison. “I’ve always thought she was better than she has shown and that she’s at least Listed class. She’s proved what I’ve always thought, that she’s a proper horse.

“She got black-type when winning a bumper at Cheltenham last year and I’m sure we’ll look to get some more on the Flat now,

“Her owner-breeder Tim Billington was never in a hurry with her and has given her time to develop and it has paid dividends. He shares her with a small syndicate so this is a huge result for them.”

Winning rider Steve Drowne added: “I got a lovely trip round but she helps you. She switched off and then picked up when I asked her to. Kieren (Fallon on Australia Day) couldn’t lead me for any longer and I hit the front sooner than I’d have liked.

“She was pulling up a bit when she hit the front but she has matured and put her head down and battled on.”

WINNING TRIO JUST MISS OUT ON A TREBLE

Owners Derrick Smith, Michael Tabor and John Magnier came close to recording a memorable treble in successive races at Royal Ascot today.

After Starspangledbanner won the Golden Jubilee Stakes and Laddies Poker Two landed the Wokingham Handicap it was Imposing’s turn in the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap, and while he beat 15 rivals he found Cill Rialaig just too strong. Imposing did not get the best of runs in the home straight - Ryan Moore was forced wide of the field - and he returned with an overreach to a hind foot that was probably caused by another runner, but Smith was making no excuses.

He said: “The horse is ridden like that, and he just needs a bit of luck in running. I’m still happy, and it’s a day I’ll remember for a long, long time.”

Harry Herbert, a director of Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, has also enjoyed a Royal Ascot he will not forget quickly. Horses owned in syndicates he manages had won three races and been second in another before Martyr ran in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes, and he produced another fine effort to take third.

Herbert said of the Richard Hannon-trained five-year-old: “This fellow has run a wonderful race, and filled the same position as last year - now we might step him up in distance and try a mile and six furlongs.

“Everyone is chuffed when an old friend like this who has had injury problems comes back to Royal Ascot and is really brave.

“It’s been an awesome meeting for us, and all the horses are in different syndicates - that means 80 different people have been to the Royal meeting and seen their horse get into the winner’s enclosure, which is marvellous.”

SIXTH RACE QUOTES
QUEEN ALEXANDRA STAKES

FIRST IN THE LAST FOR GARY MOORE

Sussex trainer Gary Moore enjoyed his first Royal Ascot winner when Bergo took the final and longest race of the meeting, the Queen Alexandra Stakes. He set a track record in the process of 4mins 47.79s, an improvement of more than a second.

The moment was made all the sweeter for Moore, because Bergo, who is a successful chaser, was ridden by his son Ryan, who gained Royal Ascot’s Arora Champion Jockey title by virtue of the victory.

Moore senior said: “I haven’t had many runners here and he was my first realistic chance of a winner. I doubted him on the ground, because while everyone says he wants firm ground he doesn’t really and a little bit of good in it would have helped.

“I wasn’t sure he would stay the distance either, but I knew his homework was good and better than when he had been working throughout the winter.

“It makes it even better for me to have Ryan on board especially as it means he becomes champion jockey at Royal Ascot. Ryan committed a long way from home and frightened the life out of me, but he’s very strong in that situation.

“The horse will have a holiday now and then come back for jumping.”

Bergo carried the colours of Sam Sangster, whose late father, Robert, owned many champions who were trained by the great Vincent O’Brien. Sangster junior became registered owner of Bergo following the six-months ban handed out to the horse’s former owner, gambler Harry Findlay.

Sangster said: “All the Findlay horses with Richard Hannon have been transferred into Richard’s name, all the Brian Meehan-trained horses have gone to the Sangster family and the rest have come into my name. It was only two weeks ago that we made the transition.

“The colours belong to my mother, Susan. Two weeks ago we had dinner and she said, ‘I don’t have any runners any more so you can have my colours’.”

SIXTH RACE QUOTES

Queen Alexandra Stakes

AAJEL WILL RETURN...AND SO MIGHT CARACCIOLA

Aajel will bid to make amends next year for his length and a half defeat to Bergo in the Queen Alexandra Stakes.

The Marcus Tregoning-trained six-year-old made most of the running under Richard Hills in the extended two-mile, five-furlong contest but had to settle for second behind the victorious Bergo.

Tregoning said: “I’m delighted with him, especially as he was drawn one. I know there’s a long way to go but the jockey rode a superb race on him.

“We just bumped into one better on the day but he got the trip well and we will be back again to have a go next year.”

Old-timer Caracciola thrilled connections when running on to take fourth in the Queen Alexandra Stakes.

The 13-year-old gelding, successful in the contest 12 months ago, was five and a quarter lengths behind the winner.

Trainer Nicky Henderson said: “He’s amazing. He’s run a tremendous race, as did Sentry Duty (sixth).

“One day, someday, we’ll have to say he’s done his bit and that’s it. Eddie Ahern normally rides him - Alan (Munro) has ridden him exactly as Eddie would have ridden him today, but after so long, we should know exactly how to ride him - and Eddie’s begged us to give him to him to go hunting.

“Caracciola’s in good form as we just saw and he enjoyed that. He was running on at the end and it was an honourable teenage performance.”

Owner Piers Pottinger added: “He still holds the record as the oldest winner here and that will take some beating. One day he will tell us when he’s had enough. He lost interest in hurdling but he loves running on the Flat on this ground.”

Steve Drowne was suspended for two days (Monday, July 5, and Tuesday, July 6) after the stewards found him guilty of using his whip with excessive frequency when winning the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap aboard Cill Rialaig.

RYAN MOORE WINS THE ARORA HOTELS LEADING RIDER AWARD AT ROYAL ASCOT 2010

SPORTING KENNY HAPPY AT ASCOT’S ‘HIGHER-END MEET’

American Kenny McPeek may have endured a testing time in the suit-hire stakes, but he has no complaints about his first Royal Ascot raid.

Kentucky-based McPeek, 47, runs Casper’s Touch in today’s opening race, the Chesham Stakes (2.30), the third of three runners he will have saddled at the meeting. Noble’s Promise finished fifth in Tuesday’s St James’s Palace Stakes, while Tiz My Time took third in yesterday’s Albany Stakes for fillies.

This is McPeek’s second visit to Ascot - his Hard Buck was runner-up to Doyen in the 2004 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes - and while hiring a morning suit for the occasion was no problem, he admitted “the first one didn’t fit too good, but I changed it”.

Of Casper’s Touch, he said: “He’s a nice horse who we think will run a similar
type of race to the filly [Tiz My Time]. He will love seven furlongs, but the more the better - he probably needs nine furlongs right now.”

Of his two juvenile runners, McPeek said: “It’s been a test drive for me to figure out what kind of filly or colt to bring over here in the future. I have a different approach to Wesley [Ward, the American trainer who won two races at Royal Ascot last year]. He’s much more about speed-speed, while I try to find more a staying type of two-year-old. It’s a learning experience, but a happy one.

“We really enjoy the higher-end meets - I’ve been pretty competitive at Keeneland, Churchill and Saratoga, and this fits just perfect with our programme. I’d like to bring horses here every year. This is an easy trip for us - all the horses came over fine, they eat well and ship well. I have my staff give them water at the top of every hour on the way over - it’s been a non-issue.

“The Australians have come a lot further than we have. I think it’s a bit of a misconception about the travel because Europeans come our way all the time and you don’t hear complaints from them. We should come back this way more.

“It’s not all about money - it’s about the sport of it all. Obviously you look at the bottom line, but we’ll probably get an offer or two for the filly and see how that goes. To be competitive in races like these is our goal, and prize money comes when it comes.”

Noble’s Promise had finished fifth in the Kentucky Derby before arriving at Royal Ascot, where the right-handed track became a new experience. McPeek said: “After the race Kieren [Fallon] and I wished we’d just let him go at his own pace, because he broke well [he was dropped into midfield].

“He was on the inside, so when he was eased out for a run the colt thought he was going left-handed, which he’s done all his career. Kieren had to rearrange him and get him to curl back right. You can’t unring a bell - fifth wasn’t bad, but not what we were looking for.”

McPeek added: “Noble’s Promise will probably return to the States now, but the two-year-olds might stay on. I’ll talk to the clients [owners] after the colt has run.”

CARACCIOLA SEEKS TEENAGE KICKS

Caracciola will attempt to achieve the remarkable feat of winning at Royal Ascot as a venerable teenager when he contests the Queen Alexandra Stakes (5.35pm) this afternoon.

The 13-year-old defied the passing years in 2009 when winning Britain’s longest Flat race (two miles, five furlongs and 159 yards) at the ripe old age of 12, but Nicky Henderson’s charge is back in a bid to become the latest back-to-back winner of the race, following on from Cover Up, successful in 2002 and 2003.

Caracciola had already made his racecourse debut before his next oldest challengers in the 18-runner field, the 10-year-old veterans Balkan Knight and Midas Way, had even been born.

Highclere Thoroughbred Racing has enjoyed a fantastic meeting so far with two winners and the ownership syndicate has two opportunities to reach a new best ever Royal Ascot return of three wins.

Harbinger looks to have strong claims in the Group Two Hardwicke Stakes (3.05pm), while Martyr is set to line up in the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap (5pm). If both were to succeed, that would take Highclere Thoroughbred Racing’s all-time total at Royal Ascot to 9 wins.

Henry Cecil is the leading trainer in Royal Ascot history with 72 winners but the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes (formerly the Cork & Orrery Stakes) has so far eluded the master of Warren Place, who saddles Lord Shanakill in the six-furlong sprint.

As befits the second British Leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, today’s Golden Jubilee Stakes is the most international renewal in its history, with six nations (Britain, Ireland, USA, Australia, France and Hong Kong) represented among the bumper field of 24 runners.

The trainer/jockey combination of Richard Hannon and Richard Hughes will bid for a hat-trick of wins in today’s Listed Chesham Stakes (2.30pm) with the unbeaten King Torus. The pair teamed up for victory with Big Audio in 2009 and The Queen’s Free Agent two years ago.

BETTING NEWS

Wokingham Handicap favourite Laddies Poker Two has been the subject of a major gamble this morning, now trading as short as 5/1 having been double those odds at the start of the day.

“It’s the biggest gamble of the week and Laddies Poker Two was available at 25/1 antepost last week,” said Coral’s Simon Clare.

Following Alainmaar’s withdrawal, Harbinger looks set to be the shortest-priced favourite of the week in the Hardwicke Stakes and one punter staked £80,000 in cash in the William Hill betting shop in Ascot this morning on Sir Michael Stoute’s charge, who is now 8/11 from 4/6.
