ROYAL ASCOT 2010
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
FOURTH DAY, FRIDAY, JUNE 18
CROWD
There was a crowd of 63,373 at Royal Ascot today, up 19 per cent on last year’s figure of 53,248.
Nick Smith, Ascot’s Head of Communications and International Racing, commented: “We’re delighted to see such a huge Friday crowd. We are looking forward to another bumper day tomorrow when we are sold out in all the enclosures although there is availability for walk up on The Heath.”
TAPS STAY OFF TONIGHT, SAYS CLERK OF THE COURSE
Ascot clerk of the course Chris Stickels has no plans to water tonight ahead of the final day of the Royal meeting.
Stickels said: “We won’t be watering or moving any rails - we’ll just be doing routine maintenance.
“A few showers are forecast, and the track is getting worn. When it gets to that stage it doesn’t take watering well and it’s best to leave it alone.
“It’s been a fantastic meeting so far and everyone has been very complimentary about the ground so we’re very happy and looking forward to another great day tomorrow.”

FIRST RACE WINNING QUOTES
ALBANY STAKES (GROUP 3)
MEMORABLE WEEK FOR CONNECTIONS OF ALBANY WINNER
Highclere Thoroughbred Racing had their second winner at this year’s Royal Ascot while the trainer/jockey combination of Richard Hannon and Richard Hughes celebrated their third victory when Memory captured the Albany Stakes.
Hughes finished with a wet sail to score by a head from Margot Did and the winner received quotes of 20/1 and 33/1 respectively for next year’s 1000 Guineas and Oaks.
“She never hits the gate - she never has done - and there is no real point in buzzing her up to jump the gate. You might as well let her do her own her own thing and, once she gets rolling, she is a pretty decent filly. She is only little but she is good,” said Hannon.
“She is a funny filly. Sometimes we work her in between a couple and she doesn’t work very well. But she comes to the races and she knows her job here. She is such a lovely mover and she does her own thing so you leave her to that, which is good enough.
“She’s decent and I can’t mess her around. I’d say she’ll go for one of those fillies’ races at the Newmarket July Meeting.
“It’s been a good week although yesterday we hit the crossbar three times.”
Hughes added: “At Goodwood I jumped and she landed on all fours, so I went ‘yah!’ and she wouldn’t go so I just sat on her and then she came good. I thought she was over it today but she did exactly the same thing and if you bully her, she won’t go.
“It’s only for Elvis at home, the little lad in the yard who has managed her from day one. He has done a brilliant job with her.
“She will get a mile standing on her head and she needed every yard of the six furlongs today. The filly that we beat was actually going exceptionally well at the two pole but I managed to get in behind her and in the end I outstayed her.”
“She’s small but she’s as good a moving filly as I’ve sat on for a while. Her forte is how good a mover she is and she’s a beautiful ride. When we got to the start today I thought we wouldn’t be beaten.
“We’ve had a good few two-year-old fillies winning this year and she would be head and shoulders above the others.”
FIRST RACE QUOTES
ALBANY STAKES
HAYLEY GOES CLOSE AND KENNY PLEASED WITH TIZ
Hayley Turner came within inches of being the second woman to ride a Royal Ascot winner when Margot Did finished runner-up, beaten a head by Memory in the Albany Stakes.
Margot Did was in front 100 metres from the post, and trainer Michael Bell said: “She’s been a revelation since we bought her. She shows plenty of speed, is very genuine, and hopefully has a very big future.
“How we bought her for ten grand [10,000gns at Tattersalls’ Guineas Breeze-Up Sale] as recently as April 30 I don’t know.
“It’s probably like getting to the final at Wimbledon and getting beat. You are happy to be here and happy to run well and you would rather finish second than third, but it is all about getting the winning rosette really.
“Hayley did nothing wrong and the winner would have been an unlucky loser if she had been beaten. They are clearly two nice fillies.
“I’ve no firm plans, but the Cherry Hinton Stakes [at Newmarket’s July meeting] would be a possibility I suppose.
She’s tough and game and takes her racing well.”
American raider Tiz My Time finished third after holding a prominent early position, and trainer Kenny McPeek said: “She ran well - we always felt she was a good filly and in her first two starts [when twice second] she hooked some very good American sprinters. She trained well on our grass course at home and I felt she would show well here and she did.
“Kieren [Fallon] said she was a lovely filly, although she was a little keyed up and he said she could do with a pony [to escort her to the start] to help her save energy.”
“This filly and the colt we run tomorrow [Casper’s Touch] may stay on here but we will have to talk to the clients [owners]. She’d be a good thing in a Saratoga maiden now.”
FIRST RACE GROUND QUOTES
Albany Stakes (Group Three)
JOCKEYS GIVE THE GROUND A THUMBS UP
Paul Hanagan, rider of the 14th Honeymead, reported: “The ground is good to firm. It has dried up since yesterday so it’s a bit quicker but it’s safe ground.”
Martin Dwyer, sixth aboard Crying Lightening, revealed: “It’s nice ground - fast but with no jar. It’s the same as it has been all week and I think the Clerk of the Course has done a good job.”
Al Sharood was 18th under Frankie Dettori who said: “The ground is the same as yesterday.”
Ahmed Ajtebi, beaten into 21st aboard Idiom enthused: “It is lovely ground - perfect ground.”
Seventh-placed Queen Of Spain’s jockey Johnny Murtagh commented: “It’s lovely ground.”
Ian Mongan, who partnered 10th Grandma’s Dream, reported: “I think they’ve done a good job with the ground - perfect. There shouldn’t be any excuses for anyone.”
William Buick rode 12th-placed Twist Of Silver and said: “It’s good to firm ground.”
QUINN AND TURNER BANNED
Jockeys Jimmy Quinn and Hayley Turner both picked up suspensions following the opening Albany Stakes.
The stewards found that Quinn had caused interference to Hooray and suspended him for three days on July 2, 4 and 5.
Turner was found to have used her whip with excessive frequency aboard runner-up Margot Did and was banned for one day, on July 2.
SECOND RACE QUOTES
KING EDWARD VII STAKES
FRANKIE THINKING OF IRISH DERBY FOR MONTEROSSO
Frankie Dettori had the Irish Derby in mind after winning the King Edward VII Stakes on Monterosso.
Dettori mentioned the Irish Classic after performing his aerial exit from the saddle and completing another happy occasion for trainer Mark Johnston. Monterosso is owned by Sheikh Mohammed’s son Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, and was sired by Dubawi, who stands at the Sheikh’s Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket.
Ladbrokes, sponsors of the St Leger, quoted the colt at 8/1 for that contest, but Johnston knows there are other options beforehand. He said: “We’ve been gradually stepping him up in class and it’s paid off. He ran his first four races on the all-weather, but when he went to Ripon in April he was so green. He couldn’t handle the bends or the surface - everything went wrong, but he still won. We knew we had a class horse.
“We had a green horse earlier in the season but now he’s a completely different animal.
“Frankie was full of confidence. When he got on him he said ‘I love him’ and after he won at Newmarket he didn’t think the trip would be a problem. The horse has the speed for a mile but the attitude for a mile and a half.
“It’s one step at a time, but we’ll go home and think of a plan.
Investec Derby runner-up At First Sight made the running once again today, and Johnston said: “With Frankie Dettori riding and knowing the horse I didn’t need to give any instructions. I was thinking during the race that Frankie, who was sitting fourth, was at the mercy of those in second and third because I didn’t want them to let the leader get away from them. I just assumed the other jockeys knew he had gone clear in the Derby, but it went fine.”
Frankie Dettori declared: “I really like this horse. We stepped him up in distance and he has kept on improving - it was a tremendous performance today and a good credit to Dubawi, who has done very well this year.
“Perhaps a pop at the Irish Derby could be on the cards. He is still learning and he was running about but that is a good sign as it means that he is not quite tired yet.”
SECOND RACE PLACE QUOTES
King Edward VII Stakes (Group Two)
ST LEGER ENTERS COSMOS CALCULATIONS
Arctic Cosmos could now be on the Classic trail after his fine effort to take second in the Group Two King Edward VII Stakes under William Buick.
John Gosden’s charge bolted up in a Kempton handicap over the mile and half distance nine days ago and showed vastly improved form to get within two and a quarter lengths of the victorious Monterosso, despite his 14/1 starting price.
The Newmarket trainer said: “That was a huge run, a great run.”
“We will definitely put him away now and bring him back for the St Leger, with a view to possibly giving him a run before that. I could still run him in a Listed race if I wanted to.
“I could have run him in another handicap and picked up £8,000 for being placed or come here and collect £29,000. We came here and now he’s Group Two-placed.”
Mahmood Al Zarooni was pleased with another honest effort from 11/1 shot Buzzword who claimed third under Ahmed Ajtebi by a head from Derby runner-up At First Sight.
The Godolphin handler commented: “Buzzword ran very well. Ahmed said he gave his best and could have been closer. He got bumped a bit on the bend and but for that he might have been second.
“He will probably have a rest because his races have been close together but a decision about where he goes next will be made later.”
At First Sight was a disappointing 5/2 favourite for trainer Aidan O’Brien.
The colt’s jockey Johnny Murtagh said: “I’ve got no excuses.”
THIRD RACE WIN QUOTES
Coronation Stakes (Group One)
LANGTRY CORONATION ENDS BALLYDOYLE DEARTH
Lillie Langtry, sent off a well-supported 7/2 favourite, ended the Ballydoyle drought at this year’s Royal Ascot with an emphatic victory in the Coronation Stakes.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained filly quickened clear of her rivals under Johnny Murtagh to record a length and a quarter verdict in the mile contest over fellow Irish-trained raider Gile Na Greine, in a time of 1m 39.69s.
O’Brien said: “We always thought that she was a very good filly - she was a very good filly last year - but she had a little injury at the back end of the season and it is a credit to everyone for getting her back because it looked like she might never race again.
“She was off the whole winter and just ready to start in the Irish Guineas, where she ran a lovely race - Johnny was delighted with her then and was looking forward to coming here with her.
“The lads at home put so much work in day in and day out so it’s a relief for everyone. It’s a privilege to be a part of the effort so on the whole it’s a relief that we have done this for the lads really - we’re delighted for them.
“Johnny gave her a lovely ride today and he produced her lovely. She quickened really well and showed what she can do. We are delighted - you always dream of these things happening but it doesn’t always work out that way.
“She has the option of stepping up to a mile and a quarter - the Pretty Polly or the Nassau Stakes - so I think they are two options but we have to sit down and talk as to whether she stays at a mile for something like the Sussex Stakes or steps up to a mile and a quarter.
“Age Of Aquarius ran a great race for a four-year-old in the Gold Cup yesterday. Yeats was running in the Coronation Cup when he was four and for Age Of Aquarius to come here as a four-year-old, we were delighted with him.”
Murtagh commented: “Coming into this week I felt the horses would all run well. You just need that little bit of luck and thankfully we got it today.
“I though I had a very strong book of rides here today. I’ve got four seconds on the board this week so two more wins and I’m back on top as leading jockey at the meeting.
“I always thought Lillie Langtry was the best filly last year. She’s got good heart, great ability and plenty of speed. She was finishing well in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and maybe if I’d been a bit more aggressive at the Curragh she might have won.
“That was a very good performance today and it rode like a good race so I’d say it was a pretty strong Coronation Stakes.”
THIRD RACE PLACED QUOTES
CORONATION STAKES (GROUP 1)
GUTSY GILE TAKES SECOND
The Jim Bolger-trained Gile Na Greine put in a courageous performance when, having made nearly all, the running she was passed in the final furlong to finish second to Lillie Langtry.
“She likes to do her own thing and the main thing is that she travels well,” said Bolger. “She’s hardy, carries plenty of condition and behaves a bit like a colt. But she can take plenty of mileage and she’s good.
“There’s a possibility that she could step up in trip, she certainly won’t be stepping back in distance.”
Trainer Henry Cecil was philosophical following Jacqueline Quest’s third place. The Rock Of Gibraltar filly had finished first past the post in the StanJames.com 1000 Guineas only to be disqualified by the stewards into second.
“She’s done nothing wrong and they were all the best fillies around up against her. We’ll just have to see what we do now, I’m not sure where we’ll go,” said Cecil.
“My other runner Chachamaidee (who finished 12th) ran well until the final stages of the race. She’d been working well but just didn’t stay the mile and will go back to seven furlongs. The obvious race for her is the Oak Tree Stakes at Goodwood.”
THIRD RACE QUOTES
CORONATION STAKES
LONGER TRIP WORTH A TRY FOR MUSIC SHOW
Music Show, who was luckless from an unfavourable draw in the StanJames.com 1000 Guineas, fared little better in the Coronation Stakes.
Trainer Mick Channon, clearly highly disappointed after the filly had finished fourth, said Music Show had been given little chance by today’s draw, which saw her line up on the outside in stall two.
Channon referred further questions to Bruce Raymond, racing manager to owner Jaber Abdullah.
Raymond said: “She was a little further back than we would have liked, but to get her in among them and not leave her wide he [jockey Ryan Moore] had to take her back. She seemed a bit one-paced, and I would like to try her over a mile and a quarter, but Mick’s the trainer, and it is up to him.”
DETTORI GIVEN TWO-DAY BAN FOR MONTEROSSO RIDE
The pleasure of winning the King Edward VII Stakes on Monterosso was tempered for jockey Frankie Dettori when he was suspended for a riding infringement during the race.
At a stewards’ enquiry it was decided Monterosso had interfered with fifth-placed Green Moon who in turn hampered At First Sight, who took fourth.
Dettori was found in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he allowed his mount to drift right-handed towards the rail. His suspension takes place on July 2 and 4.
FOURTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
WOLFERTON HANDICAP (LISTED)
RAINBOW CONTINUES GREAT WEEK FOR PUNTERS
A great week for favourite backers continued when 13/8 chance Rainbow Peak became the ninth clear or joint market leader at this year’s Royal Ascot to score when running away with the Wolferton Handicap.
“Hopefully there is more to come,” said Jarvis. “He wasn’t born until May 20 and never came into training until quite late, then he had a minor pelvis fracture. So we never got him going until last year and he had a hairline fracture on a tibia and consequently he has had very little racing.
“He has been working like a Group horse and, judging by his price, I think other people knew about him. I think his handicapping days are over and we have taken the precaution of putting him in a Group race abroad. We will be looking for 10 furlong races.
“Neil (Callan) said that the really strong pace suited him because he does pick up well off a strong pace and it couldn’t have gone better for him. I suggested a mile and a half and Neil said that he is so good over a mile and a quarter that I shouldn’t change things at the moment.”
Callan added: “I went through the race last night, looked at some form and I was pretty happy that I had a good draw. I knew that my horse had pace but he was off the bridle for so long that I knew that they were going a bit quick.
“His work has been very good since his first run this year, which was probably over an inadequate mile. That sharpened him up a little bit and put the edge on him but he just had enough time in between to stay relaxed and come on for that run.
“He was a bit unlucky that day because he didn’t have a good draw and the ground at York was very fast and he had to stick wide and didn’t learn a lot as a result,
“He is winning a handicap off a mark in the 100s now so you would think that he is going to turn into a Group performer. He is still a little bit of a frame of a horse and he has got to fill out a little bit, so he has the scope. He relaxes so well and a mile and a quarter is perfect at the moment, but he looks like he could get a mile and a half next year and be really classy.
“Today was an important day for me because I’ve been looking forward to riding this horse here for a long time.”
Owner-breeder Peter Savill added: “We tend to sell the colts and keep the well-bred fillies but he didn’t reach his reserve and I was delighted to retain him because I’d always loved him.
“I didn’t back him today because I felt he was too short a price and he’s got some good entries. I think we put him in a couple of Group Ones in Germany.
“He could well go right to the top and I think he’ll be a better horse later this year. When Kieren (Fallon) won on at Ascot last season he told us that he just didn’t know how good the horse might be this year.
“He lost his unbeaten record at York last time when the ground was too fast for him, the trip was too short and he had a bad draw. Even with those three things against him he nearly managed to win.
FOURTH RACE QUOTES
WOLFERTON HANDICAP
KINGS HEADS KINGDOM IN BATTLE FOR SECOND
A strong run from off the pace enabled Kings Gambit to head Kingdom Of Fife and grab the runner-up spot in the Wolferton Handicap.
Kings Gambit was ridden by Mickey Fenton and trained for owner Fitri Hay by Tom Tate, while Kingdom Of Fife was another placed runner at this year’s Royal Ascot for Her Majesty The Queen, whose Quadrille was just touched off when second in yesterday’s Hampton Court Stakes.
Tate said: “This is a high for us and he’s a grand horse who deserves the biggest and best. I don’t think the draw was against us because he broke well, but got a little bit out-paced. Mickey had to sit and suffer and then came with a good late rattle. He was never going to win, but at least we got second.
“He’s an exposed and experienced horse, but he’s settled down into a pattern for us and he’s a good Listed or Group Three performer. This is his trip - he’s a very genuine, hard trier and I wish I had more like him.”
Kings Gambit was fifth when favourite for a Group Three race at Taby in Sweden on his previous outing, but Tate said: “The track was all against him. It was a mile round and he was flying at the finish.”
Based at Tadcaster in Yorkshire, Tate has yet to saddle a Royal Ascot winner, and he admitted: “This is very special for me, but I wish I could go one better.”
FIFTH RACE QUOTES
QUEEN’S VASE
YOUNG STAYERS SERVE UP A CRACKER IN QUEEN’S VASE
Mikhail Glinka and Theology produced another contest to savour at this year’s Royal meeting when slugging their way through the closing stages of the Queen’s Vase.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained Mikhail Glinka won by a nose, providing trainer Aidan O’Brien, jockey Johnny Murtagh and owners Sue Magnier, Derrick Smith and Michael Tabor with a 12.5/1double on the day following Lillie Langtry’s Coronation Stakes success.
Murtagh said of the Queen’s Vase: “It was a bit of a Micky Mouse race, with stop-start, stop-start, and I didn’t really get a nice run. I was pushed out into the middle of the track, but he stays well. I think he could be a Gold Cup horse. He’s a big classy horse with a high-cruising speed, and he didn’t get the run of the race yet still won.”
Murtagh, who had drifted out to a three-figure price in betting for the Arora leading jockeys’ title after drawing a blank on the first three days, said: “I’ve some good rides tomorrow and have had four seconds, and they could count for a lot in this competition.”
O’Brien said of Mikhail Glinka: “He stays well and we’d have to look at the St Leger now. Johnny did well on the horse because the colt has had a couple of setbacks since he last ran and we weren’t sure about the trip, but he was very strong on him and he did a great job. He nursed him around and I don’t think he could have come much later.
“I think he’ll learn a lot from today. I was never confident but always hopeful. He has a Classic pedigree and horses with that sort of breeding usually stay if everything else falls into place.
“We started off late this year and our horses were behind - they’ve been progressing and catching up, but so has everyone else’s horses.
“We’re making up ground as we’re going along. It’s like riding a bicycle. We’re pedalling as fast as we can but we don’t want the chain to come off.”
FIFTH RACE PLACE QUOTES
Queen’s Vase (Group Three)
THEOLOGY DENIED IN SPIRITED DUEL
Highclere Thoroughbred Racing narrowly missed out on a third winner at this year’s Royal Meeting as Theology went down by a nose in a pulsating conclusion to the Group Three Queen’s Vase over two miles.
The Jeremy Noseda-trained 18/1 chance went down by a nose to Mikhail Glinka, despite the best efforts of William Buick to drive his mount to victory.
The owners had already been on the mark with Approve in Thursday’s Norfolk Stakes and Memory in today’s opening contest, the Albany Stakes.
Harry Herbert, managing director of Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, said: “That was a great run but agony to be beaten on the line after two miles. We would consider the St Leger now - it would have to come into the reckoning.”
“William gave him an exemplary ride and Jeremy was absolutely right in saying he would make in to a very nice staying horse. It was a good call from Jeremy.
“The horse is just learning and there is a lot to look forward to. He’s physically changing and is a very different horse to the one we set out with at the start of the season.
“We’ve been very fortunate to have the horses run so well this week and we’re very lucky to get horses like this. It’s great for the owners in the syndicates.”
Sir Michael Stoute saddled third-placed Total Command who came home a further two and a half lengths back under Ryan Moore at 8/1.
The trainer commented: “We’re very pleased with the progress this fellow is making and he just probably didn’t quite get home.”
SIXTH RACE WIN QUOTES
Buckingham Palace Handicap
TREADWELL STORMS THE PALACE
Jamie Osborne already had three Royal Ascot successes on the board before today but none gave him as much joy as his fourth, Treadwell, in the afternoon’s concluding contest, the seven-furlong Buckingham Palace Handicap.
The three-year-old, part-owned by Cath Walwyn, took the spoils by half a length from Himalya at odds of 14/1.
Osborne’s previous triumphs came with Irony (2001 Windsor Castle Stakes), Drawnfromthepast (2007 Windsor Castle Stakes) and Enjoy The Moment (2007 Queen Alexandra Stakes).
The ecstatic trainer said: “Realistically, you need a miracle to win here but I felt he was coming here with a chance.
“The camera was following the runners on the near side and I couldn’t see him until about a furlong and a half down and then all of a sudden he appeared.
“At the moment, this means everything. We have had a tough couple of years so it’s nice to have a nice horse in the yard. The world has had problems and I’ve had problems with the world.
“This means more than the previous three Royal Ascot wins because we’ve had a pretty quiet time. The first one came when I had just started training and I thought it was easy. Then the next two came in 2007 and we had a lot of horses at the time, so again I thought it was easy. I’ve been in this game a while and I should have known better.”
Experienced rider Fergus Sweeney was savouring his first success at the Royal Meeting.
He said: “I know the horse well now and he has got a lot of gears, so when I was squeezing him along at half way I knew they had gone too quick up front. They started coming back to me and he did it really well.
“I’m in my 30s now so I thought this day would never come. It’s a big day and there’s a lot to take in but I’m off to Goodwood now so I’ll take it all in after that.”
SIXTH RACE PLACED QUOTES
BUCKINGHAM PALACE HANDICAP
HIMALYA JUST MISSES OUT
Newmarket trainer Jeremy Noseda had a day to forget at Royal Ascot when Himalya gave him a second consecutive close runner-up when beaten in the concluding Buckingham Palace Handicap.
The well-backed 7/1 chance, who had been available at double those odds this morning, finished first on the stands’ side but was still half a length behind the winner Treadwell on the other side of the track.
“Ryan (Moore) gave him a lovely ride but he just had nothing to race with. He needed a couple of horses to carry him but he was all by himself for pretty much all the last furlong,” said Noseda.
“This race has been what I’d had in mind for six months so I don’t know what we’ll do now. I will sit down and have a think tomorrow morning.”

LONGSHOTS WORTH NOTING IN GOLDEN JUBILEE STAKES
Showcasing heads most bookmakers’ lists for tomorrow’s £450,000 Golden Jubilee Stakes, but double-figure price horses cannot be written off in the Group One sprint.
In the past four years the winner has started at 20/1, 33/1, 9/1 and 33/1, and you have to go back 13 years to find a successful favourite, namely Royal Applause, who started at 11/2.
Barry Hills, who trained Royal Applause, saddles Prime Defender tomorrow, and at a top-priced 33/1 he is worth considering on recent SP trends. More significantly he is in form, having beaten Showcasing in the Duke of York Stakes last month.
The John Gosden-trained Showcasing is one of two three-year-olds in the contest - James Fanshawe’s Society Rock is the other - and that age group has begun winning the contest again after an 11-year break. Art Connoisseur and Kingsgate Native, the two most recent victors, were both three.
Yet it is the rich prize money and international nature of the Golden Jubilee Stakes that has elevated it to become one of the highlights of Royal Ascot. Nine of the 24 declared runners are trained outside Britain, and this year’s race includes challengers from Australia, America, Hong Kong, France and Ireland.
Alverta, the sole Australian raider who bids to emulate 2003 winner Choisir - and improve on Takeover Target’s two placings in the event - could become the first mare to win since Posada in 1988 (when the race was a Group Three event known as the Cork & Orrery Stakes). Trained by Paul Messara, Alverta won the Group One Coolmore Classic Handicap on her latest start, while America’s hope, Kinsale King, was last seen landing the Group One Dubai Golden Shaheen at Meydan in March.
Kinsale King is trained by expatriate Irishman Carl O’Callaghan, who is based in California, while fancied Hong Kong raider Happy Zero is also in the care of an expat, namely Australian John Moore. Happy Zero has become a champion sprinter in his island home, and he performed with credit when sent overseas last month for Singapore’s Krisflyer International Sprint, in which he finished third.
The sixth-placed horse in that race, Joy And Fun, is also lining up tomorrow - he won the Group Three Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan on Dubai World Cup night, but British bookmakers list him at a top-priced 25/1, while Happy Zero is no better than 8/1.
Ireland’s hope, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Starspanglebanner, has a strong southern hemisphere element in his background, for he was trained in Australia by Leon Corstens before being sold and shipped north. A Group One winner in his native country, he was fifth to Prime Defender at York on his first start for O’Brien.
Four French-trained horses will line up - Amico Fritz, Marchand D’Or, Varenar and War Artist. Marchand D’Or won the Group One Darley July Cup in 2008, a few weeks after War Artist had finished runner-up to Kingsgate Native in the Golden Jubilee. Varenar won the Group One Prix de la Foret last year, but drops back to six furlongs for the first time, while Amico Fritz is a regular winner, but is taking a step up in grade tomorrow.
Despite the strength in depth from overseas, the home team have some aces, too, not least in the form of Fleeting Spirit, who won the Darley July Cup last year. She adds spice to an intriguing contest.
IT’S A DREAM, NOT JUST JOY AND FUN, FOR CRUZ
Royal Ascot’s reputation as one of the world’s great race meetings has not been lost on Hong Kong trainer Derek Cruz.
Joy And Fun becomes Cruz’s first runner at the Royal fixture when lining up in tomorrow’s Golden Jubilee Stakes, and despite possessing an enviable training record - he has saddled more than 350 winners in Hong Kong and handled champions such as Good Ba Ba and Natural Blitz - he describes his first Royal Ascot runner as “a dream come true”.
Of his seven-year-old, New Zealand-bred gelding, Cruz said: “The horse has been here three weeks [based in Newmarket with trainer Nick Littmoden] and I’m very happy with him. I’m satisfied with everything he’s done.”
He added: “When Joy And Fun won in Dubai [landing the Group Three Al Quoz Spring] we were invited to come over here and we were more than happy to accept. To come to London and have a runner at Royal Ascot is a dream come true.”
Joy And Fun was subsequently beaten in Singapore when sixth, three places behind Happy Zero, in the Krisflyer International Sprint. Can he reverse the form?
Cruz said: “The rain came in Singapore, and that didn’t suit him, and nor did the short run in. He is a strong mover who covers a lot of ground, and he likes a nice big course, so Ascot’s straight six furlongs should be ideal.”

Alverta
Alverta has the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes over six furlongs at Royal Ascot on June 19 as her prime summer target before a potential tilt at the Darley July Cup over the same distance at Newmarket the following month. The seven-year-old mare has peaked since the turn of the year, winning the Group Two Breeders’ Classic over six furlongs at Randwick, Australia, on February 13, and then going down by a head in a Listed handicap over the same course and distance on March 13. Alverta booked her ticket to England with a two-length victory over Gold Water in the Group One Coolmore Classic Handicap over an extended seven furlongs at Rosehill on March 20. Those triumphs came after Alverta was retired but then put back into training after failing to get in foal. She had a barrier trial at Muswellbrook on May 20 to prepare her for Royal Ascot. The mare, who failed to sell as a youngster because of bad legs, is a tough and consistent campaigner, with victories from six furlongs to a mile. Prior to the peaks of the past few months, her major successes came in Listed handicaps, while she also finished a close third to Absolut Glam in the 2008 Group One Queensland Breeders & Tattersall’s Winter Stakes at Eagle Farm. Alverta also ran Takeover Target to a nose when runner-up to the popular champion and Royal Ascot veteran in a six-furlong Listed race at Randwick in December, 2007. Alverta caused her trainer some concern after losing almost 40kg during the journey from Australia to her UK base at Abington Place Stables in Newmarket - with half lost on the trip from Scone to Melbourne and the rest on the flight to England. She has put most of the weight back on after arriving in England on May 28.

Paul Messara AUS
Paul Messara, 31, is the son of Arrowfield Stud’s John and Kris Messara. Like his father, he attended Riverview College in Sydney before attaining a Communications (Business) degree at Bond University. But Messara always wanted to train racehorses and embarked upon a tour of the world’s top training centres to gain experience. He worked for leading trainers in England, Ireland and France, as well as at Shadai Stallion Station in Japan. Upon returning to Australia in 2005, he began training from stables on Arrowfield Stud at Scone in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales, before establishing state-of-the-art facilities, the 50-box Arrowfield Training Centre, on a property adjacent to the stud, which he moved to in July, 2007. Messara further purchased the Randwick Stables at Randwick racecourse to provide a Sydney base. Alverta gave Messara his first stakes winner and her Coolmore Classic victory was the trainer’s first Group One success. That first Group One win saw his octogenarian grandfather Maurice send the trainer all the horses he owned after promising to do so once Paul broke his top-flight duck. The trainer enjoyed his first Melbourne success when his classy juvenile, the AUS$1million yearling Beneteau, landed the Group Three Prelude Stakes at Caulfield on February 6. Messara splashed out AUS$3.4 million on 11 yearlings at the Easter Sale in April, 2010. He lists Happy Days as his favourite TV show and makes short films as a hobby.
Arrowfield Pastoral Pty Ltd
Arrowfield Pastoral Pty Ltd’s yellow and black diamonds with yellow cap silks represent one of Australia’s pioneering stallion farms. Arrowfield was established in 1842 and enjoyed great success although by the time it was bought by current owner, John Messara, in the mid 1980s it was better known for its wine than horses but all that has changed in the past two decades. Messara moved to Australia aged 11 in 1958 from Alexandria in Egypt, attending Riverview College in Sydney and gaining a degree in commerce from the University of NSW before founding his own successful stockbroking firm. For tax reasons, he decided to invest in either horses or nuts. He chose the former and has gone on to become arguably the most influential figure in Australian breeding since buying his first mare, Scomeld, in 1978. Like John Magnier of Coolmore in Europe, he was an innovator in the stallion business and seized on the importance of shuttling international bloodlines to Australia. In 1987, he paid AUS$6 million to bring the champion French sire Kenmare to Australia before teaming up with Coolmore to spend a reported £4 million to buy Danehill from Khalid Abdulla in 1989. Coolmore bought out Arrowfield’s share in 1994 and Danehill went on to be the most-influential modern-day stallion in Australia as well as having a similar impact in Europe. In 1996, Arrowfield relocated to a property at Scone in the Segenhoe Valley and has been home to a string of successful stallions including the champions Flying Spur and current flag-bearer Redoute’s Choice. In June, 2008, Messara was made an Officer in the Order of Australia for his "services to the thoroughbred horseracing industry, particularly through the introduction of best practice initiatives in the areas of reproduction and stud management”.
Tye Angland
Tye Angland, 20, started out with Hawkesbury trainer Garry Frazer and was one of the leading “hoops” (apprentices) in Australia before graduating to the senior ranks. He already has a significant following in his homeland where he is one of the country’s most exciting young riders. He secured his first Group One triumph aged 19 aboard Black Piranha in the Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm in June, 2009, after a run of three runner-up finishes on the horse in top-flight contests. The Paul Messara-trained Alverta provided his second Group One triumph in the Coolmore Classic Handicap at Rosehill on March 20. Angland is not from a horseracing background, although riding is second nature. Raised at rural Wantabadgery in the Wagga Wagga district of New South Wales, his father was a bull rider and Angland was national junior champion in that arena. Angland’s brothers Cody and Rhys compete on Australia’s top rodeo circuit, having gained experience in the US. The youngster was spotted by Glen Frazer while playing polocrosse for New South Wales with the former jockey’s son, Troy. Angland started riding for Frazer’s brother at Hawkesbury in 2005, while still in school. That was the first time he sat on a racehorse and he credits his rapid rise to his bull riding experience. Like many apprentices, Angland went through a quiet spell but after teaming up with Black Piranha’s trainer Con Karakatsanis and trainer Tim Martin, he found himself back in the winner’s circle. He rode four consecutive winners in one day for Martin at Grafton, including the Grafton Guineas. Angland is a Brisbane Broncos rugby league fan and rates his all-time favourite player as Darren Lockyer. He credits fellow jockey Grant Buckley as the biggest influence on his career.

Happy Zero
A full-brother to talented Hong Kong performer Triumphant Unicorn, Happy Zero was purchased by his trainer John Moore for AUS$425,000 at the 2006 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale in Australia. He made a winning debut for Moore and owner David Boehm when posting an impressive four-length victory in a Class Four handicap over five furlongs at Sha Tin, Hong Kong, in December, 2008. Happy Zero progressed through the handicapping ranks at Sha Tin with ease, recording of a pair comfortable Class Three wins over six and seven furlongs before posting an equally impressive success on his Class Two debut over seven furlongs. After suffering the first defeat of his career when coming home fourth in a another seven-furlong Class Two handicap at Sha Tin, Happy Zero returned to winning ways on his final appearance of the 2008/09 campaign, recording a neck victory in a Class One handicap, again over seven furlongs at Sha Tin. He continued his meteoric rise through the ranks at Sha Tin at the start of the 2009/10 season, scoring over five furlongs in the HK Group Three Sha Tin Sprint Trophy Handicap in October and excelling over a furlong further in the HK Group Two Cathay Pacific International Sprint Trial in November, when he had the likes of Sacred Kingdom and Joy And Fun behind him. Despite that victory, connections decided not to run Happy Zero in the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint, electing instead to step the Danzero gelding up in trip for the Group One Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Mile and he posted an excellent performance on his first try over the distance to take second behind Good Ba Ba. He dropped down to six furlongs for the HK Group One Chairman’s Sprint Prize on February 21, finishing third behind Sacred Kingdom, prior to posting a first HK Group One victory with a short-head success over Fellowship in the seven-furlong Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup on March 14. After being third in the six-furlong HK Group Two Sprint Cup on May 1, Happy Zero travelled to Kranji, Singapore, for his first start outside of Hong Kong in the Krisflyer International Sprint on May 16. After being held up in the six-furlong Group One race, Happy Zero came with a strong late run to take third behind surprise winner Green Birdie and local champion Rocket Man. He is lodging at Andrew Balding’s Park House Stables at Kingsclere in Berkshire.

John Moore HK
Born March 17, 1950, John Moore hails from a racing dynasty that has been heavily involved in Hong Kong racing since the inception of professional racing in the former British colony in 1971. Moore’s father George was a legendary jockey in his native Australia, securing 10 Sydney jockey premierships, and he also enjoyed top-class success throughout the world, winning a host of races including in Europe the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (1959 Saint Crespin), the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas (1959 Taboun, 1967 Royal Palace), the StanJames.com 1000 Guineas (1967 Fleet), the Investec Derby (1967 Royal Palace) and the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes (1967 Busted). John Moore’s brother Gary was French champion jockey as well as leading Hong Kong jockey on eight occasions, while his aunt Margaret was married to three-time Classic-winning jockey Garnet Bougoure. When George retired from the saddle in 1971, he turned his hand to training initially in France and Australia and then Hong Kong, where he was leading trainer on 11 occasions before announcing his retirement in 1985. John was assistant to his father before taking out his own licence on his father’s retirement and he has gone on to become the all-time leading trainer in Hong Kong, becoming the first handler to send out 1,000 winners in the territory on March 19, 2008. Seldom seen at the races without his trademark Panama hat and safari suit, Moore cites eight-time Group One winner Viva Pataca as the best horse that he has trained. The Marju gelding, who raced under the name of Comic Strip when trained by Sir Mark Prescott in Britain, gave Moore one of the highlights of his career when scoring in the Group One Audemars Piguet QE II Cup at Sha Tin in April, 2007, barely 40 minutes after stable companion Able One had triumphed in the Group One Champions Mile. Other notable recent winners for Moore include the 2008 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint victor Inspiration and Collection, who was formerly trained in the UK by William Haggas before going on to triumph for his current handler in the Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Cup and the Citibank Gold Cup. Moore has been the leading Hong Kong trainer (in terms of prize-money won) for the past four seasons and is on course to retain his title for a fifth time this term, having registered nearly HK$90,000,000 in prize-money already with over 50 winners to his name.
David Boehm
David Boehm, 53, is the chairman and owner of Wolmar Investments Limited, a Hong Kong-based company which focuses on investments in natural resources and real estate world-wide. He has been involved in the ownership of more than 30 horses and currently has three horses racing in his colours in Hong Kong (Happy Zero, Boss and the former Aga Khan-owned/John Oxx-trained Eyshal), and part-owns a further three horses in Australia. While Happy Zero is Boehm’s first Group One winner, he also holds a soft spot for Art Trader (formerly with Amanda Perrett), who triumphed in the HK Group Two Chairman’s Trophy in 2006 and holds the track record for nine furlongs at Happy Valley. He has been involved with John Moore for the past 20 years (his sole trainer in Hong Kong) and the Australian horses he part owns are currently in the care of John Hawkes and Chris Waller, although he has had horses with Gerald Ryan and Anthony Cummings in the past.
Darren Beadman
Born November 17, 1965, in Australia, Darren Beadman is a riding legend with a host of Group One wins to his name, including two Melbourne Cups aboard Kingston Rule (1990) and Saintly (1996). He was raised in the Yass district near Canberra and took a bus to primary school with Michael Freedman, younger brother of future leading trainer Lee Freedman. He moved to Sydney at the age of 15 as apprentice to Theo Green at Rosehill racetrack and went on to forge successful associations with leading trainers Bart Cummings and John Hawkes. He was champion apprentice in 1982/1983 and again in 1984/1985 while he went on to land eight New South Wales Jockeys' Premierships. His first major success came on Inspired in the 1984 Golden Slipper, Australia's premier race for two-year-olds, which he again won in 1997. Beadman caused a stir when quitting the saddle to become a Christian minister in 1997. The move followed his conversion to Christianity, which came in the wake of his daughter Rachel being born deaf. His self-imposed exile ended at Rosehill, Sydney, on January 8, 2000, when he rode Aviano in the Beadman's Back Handicap. He gained the elusive Cox Plate/Melbourne Cup double aboard Saintly in 1996 and was also associated with the champions Octagonal and Lohnro. He now rides primarily in Hong Kong and is John Moore’s retained jockey. His son Mitchell is also a jockey. He was inducted into the Australian Hall of Fame in 2007 - the youngest jockey ever to receive this honour and the first while still riding. He has had 40 winners in Hong Kong so far this season (up to June 16).

Joy And Fun
A half-brother to the dual Australian Group One winner Zarita, Joy And Fun was purchased for the modest sum of NZ$15,000 at the 2004 New Zealand Bloodstock Weanling Sale. He made his Hong Kong debut when fourth in a six-furlong turf handicap at Sha Tin on October 29, 2006, and built on that promising start when readily winning over the same course and distance the following month. In a productive first season in Hong Kong, Joy And Fun won four of his subsequent seven starts (all at Sha Tin) between seven furlongs and a mile, finishing second on the other three occasions. Rising through the handicapping ranks, Joy And Fun continued to impress at Sha Tin and Happy Valley throughout the 2007/08 season, posting solid efforts in ultra-competitive Class One and Class Two contests, including a head success in a Class One handicap over seven furlongs in March, 2008. He made the step up to Pattern company the following month and was far from disgraced when coming home fifth to Armada in the mile HK Group Two Chairman’s Trophy at Sha Tin, before filling the same spot behind Good Ba Ba over the same course and distance in the Group One Champion’s Mile that April. He returned to handicap company, recording a comfortable success in a mile Class One contest but ended the 2007/08 term with two relatively disappointing efforts, coming home fourth in the seven-furlong HK Grade Three Premier Cup and taking eighth in a Class One contest over a mile. Joy And Fun posted a string of pleasing performances in Group and handicap company during the first half of the 2008/09 term without winning, including when seventh in the Group One Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Mile. After that effort behind Good Ba Ba, Joy And Fun spent the rest of the season mainly contesting Group contests, recording a pair of HK Group Two victories over seven furlongs. Despite having raced at around a mile for most of his career, Joy And Fun has this season been re-invented as a sprinter and he has performed admirably well over six furlongs at Sha Tin including when coming third in both the HK Group Three Cathay Pacific International Sprint Trial in November and the Group One Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint, the final leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, in December. He made his sole career appearance over five furlongs when taking sixth behind Sacred Kingdom in the HK Group One Kent & Curwen Centenary Sprint Cup on January 31 and warmed up for his international campaign by coming fifth behind the same horse in the six-furlong HK Group One Chairman’s Sprint Prize on February 21. Joy And Fun shot to international prominence when taking the Group Three Al Quoz Sprint over six furlongs on turf at Meydan on Dubai World Cup night, March 27, and he came home sixth on his final start prior to Royal Ascot in the Group One Krisflyer International Sprint, also over six furlongs, at Kranji, Singapore, on May 16. He is based at Nick Littmoden’s Newmarket yard while in Britain.

Derek Cruz HK
The older brother of fellow Hong Kong trainer Tony, Derek Cruz enjoyed a less spectacular career as a jockey than his sibling, recording just two victories between 1979 and 1982. Born on May 23, 1955, Derek has become one of the leading trainers in Hong King since obtaining his licence in 1991, saddling over 350 winners. He enjoyed his first Group One success when Natural Blitz won the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Cup at Sha Tin in December, 2005. He has also enjoyed big race success with Wind Dancer, who landed the Sha Tin Vase in 1993, and Concert Boss, successful in the 1994 Centenary Vase. In August, 2009, Cruz was given the chance to train leading Hong Kong performer Good Ba Ba by his owner John Yuen Se Kit and he sent out the multiple champion to an historic third successive victory in the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Mile in December. Good Ba Ba subsequently returned to the care of his former handler Andreas Schultz but Cruz enjoyed further international recognition when Joy And Fun landed the valuable Group Three Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan’s Dubai World Cup meeting in March. His sons, Trevor (27) and Martin (23), have been responsible for Joy And Fun since the horse’s arrival in England. Trevor has lived in London for 10 years, while Martin was a chef in London for four years before becoming an assistant to his father 18 months ago.
Mr & Mrs Johnny Wong Chun Nam
Johnny Wong Chun Nam, 62, has business interests in the fashion, food and drinks industries. His horses are managed by Derek Cruz and it was on the trainer’s recommendation that Wong purchased Joy And Fun. He also has a number of horses in training and pre-training in New Zealand. Among other horses to race for Wong is Derek’s Choice, whose finest hour came when winning a pair of handicaps at Happy Valley in the 2000/01 season.
Brett Doyle
Born in Newmarket on August 30, 1972, Brett Doyle almost never made it as a jockey as he was so badly injured in a motorcycle accident in the early days of his apprenticeship to Clive Brittain in Newmarket, that any sort of riding career looked extremely doubtful. But he made such a good recovery that he was able to resume at Carlburg Stables and rode his first winner on Quiet Achiever at Pontefract on October 9, 1989. The biggest race he has won in England is the 1995 Group One Sussex Stakes on Sayyedati for Brittain, and he has also been successful in Royal Ascot’s King Edward VII Stakes on Amfortas, the Premio Parioli and the Mehl Mulhens Rennen on Air Express, the Chesham Stakes on World Premier and the Ayr Gold Cup on Sarcita. In 1997 he went to ride in Hong Kong for Andy Leung and the partnership lasted more than three years. He has combined riding in both the UK and Hong Kong during the past decade, having enjoyed more than 120 winners in the former British colony. Doyle has also ridden in Japan, where he gained Classic success aboard No Reason in the 2002 Japanese 2000 Guineas. His best British total of winners in a year was 63 in 1995, while he managed 62 victories in 2001. He has been riding regularly in Hong Kong again since 2008. He earlier won both the Hong Kong - Macau Trophy and the Macau Hong Kong Trophy with Crown's Gift in 2004. He is Andy Leung’s retained jockey again and has had 14 winners so far this season (up to June 16), including a double last month, and partnered 15 winners in 2009. He rode Joy And Fun to victory in the valuable Group Three Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan’s Dubai World Cup meeting in March.

Kinsale King
Kinsale King is named after the town of Kinsale in County Cork, where his owner Patrick Sheehy grew up. The Kentucky-bred son of Yankee Victor went through the sales ring twice - a $27,000 yearling purchase at Keeneland’s September Sale in 2006, he was bought by current owner for $67,000 at Barretts May Two-Year-Old Sale the following year. He was put into training with South Californian handler Jesus Mendoza, making his racecourse debut when coming third in a six-furlong Cushion Track maiden at Santa Anita on February 22, 2008. Kinsale King opened his account over the same course and distance the following month, after which he was given a late nomination for the Triple Crown and transferred to Eoin Harty. Foot problems forced Kinsale King to miss nine months and he failed to shine on two starts in minor contests for his new trainer - coming home fifth over six furlongs on Cushion Track at Hollywood Park in December, 2008, and fading to ninth over a furlong further on the newly installed Pro Ride at Santa Anita in January, 2009. After another lengthy absence, Kinsale King was switched to Carl O’Callaghan, who decided to work the gelding on turf to protect his fragile hooves. Rejuvenated by his new training regime, allied with some expert treatment from O’Callaghan’s blacksmith Robert Guest, Kinsale King posted an all-the-way victory on his first start for his new trainer, obliging at odds of 61/1 in a six-furlong allowance optional claimer on the Pro-Ride of Santa Anita on October 30. He stepped up on that effort to give his handler a first Graded success, gamely taking the Polytrack Grade Three Vernon O Underwood Stakes at Hollywood Park over six furlongs on December 6, 2009. Kinsale King made his first start of 2010 in the Pro-Ride Grade Two Palos Verdes Handicap at Santa Anita on January 23, when he posted a half-length victory over Ventana. Connections decided to aim their star sprinter at the Grade One Dubai Golden Shaheen at Meydan on March 27 and the five-year-old warmed up for his Middle Eastern assignment by working on Tapeta at Golden Gate Fields. He completed a remarkable rise through the racing ranks when beating Singapore champion Rocket Man by half a length in the US$2 million six-furlong feature on Tapeta. Kinsale King worked over half a mile on dirt under Kieren Fallon at Belmont Park, New York, on Thursday, June 3. He is staying at Abington Place Stables in Newmarket after arriving on June 7.

Carl O’Callaghan USA
Born on December 7, 1975, Carl O’Callaghan originally hails from County Clare, Ireland. Although his family were not directly involved in racing (his father is a musician), O’Callaghan grew up surrounded by ponies and started riding aged three. By the age of eight, he was mucking out and riding out for local trainer John Hassett. Having been “useless at school”, he bought a one-way ticket to New York in 1990 but became disillusioned breaking yearlings on an upstate farm. After a short spell living on the streets (he still helps homeless charities), he started working for leading New York trainer John Kimmel at Belmont Park when he was 16, spending seven years with the handler, before moving on to link up with Todd Pletcher, with whom he also spent seven years. Whilst working for Pletcher, O’Callaghan rode horses such as Scat Daddy, Magna Graduate, Host and Forest Danger. After heading to California in 2005, O’Callaghan spent three years working as a freelance for trainers Matt Chew and Lisa Lewis before taking out his own licence last year. He started out with two horses, had five in March and, after the Dubai success, has seen his string increase to 48. He lists Super Horse, Highlander Racing and Andreas Loizu as his three main clients and credits David Greaves and Norman Rodriguez as his two primary assistants. O’Callaghan enjoyed a first Graded success when Kinsale King triumphed in the Grade Three Vernon O Underwood Stakes at Hollywood Park on December 6, 2009, and celebrated an initial Group One success when the same horse landed the Dubai Golden Shaheen at Meydan on March 27. Television viewers saw O’Callaghan celebrate exuberantly in Dubai with what he describes as his “Irish river dance”. O’Callaghan, like his father Shay, is an accomplished singer and guitarist, performing at weddings and parties and his four CDs are sold to benefit an American cancer charity. He feeds Kinsale King on a special diet that includes Guinness and eggs.
Sheehy LLC
Born on January 29, 1940, in Co Cork, Ireland, Dr Patrick Sheehy emigrated to the United States in 1966 and currently works as an oncologist in Newport Beach, California. He grew up surrounded by horses and enjoyed his first foray into the world of thoroughbred ownership in 1970, when setting up a partnership in his native Ireland with his two brothers, and began taking an interest in the southern Californian racing circuit in 1976. Sheehy, whose brother Denis is a bloodstock agent in Co Cork, runs his horses under the banner of Super Horse Inc. Stable. He has had horses with Robert Hess Jr, the late Bobby Frankel and Carl O’Callaghan in recent years, and he enjoyed his first stakes winner when the Frankel-trained The Exeter Man landed the El Conejo Handicap at Santa Anita in January, 1998. Leesider, trained by fellow Irish ex-pat Paddy Gallagher, also proved to a useful performer for the Sheehy operation, netting $150,000 when capturing the Snow Chief Stakes at Hollywood Park in April, 2007. Kinsale King provided Sheehy with his first Group/Grade One success when storming to a half-length victory in the Dubai Golden Shaheen on March 27.
Kieren Fallon
Born on February 22, 1965, in County Clare, Ireland, Kieren Fallon joined Kevin Prendergast as an apprentice in 1983. Piccadilly Lord at Navan on June 18, 1984, was his first winner. He moved from Ireland to Jimmy FitzGerald's Malton stable from 1989 until 1991 and spent three years with Lynda Ramsden from 1993 until the end of 1996. In 1997, Fallon was a surprise appointment as stable jockey to Henry Cecil and promptly won the 1000 Guineas on Sleepytime and the Oaks on Reams Of Verse. He ceased riding for Cecil in August, 1999, and was first jockey to Sir Michael Stoute in 2000 and 2001 after which he freelanced, still riding many for Stoute, before becoming retained rider to owners Michael Tabor, Sue Magnier and Derrick Smith in 2005. The Stoute/Fallon combination won the 2000 Guineas with the Saeed Suhail-owned King's Best in 2000 and Golan in 2001. Fallon was champion jockey in 1997 (202 wins), 1998 (204), 1999 (202), 2001 (166), 2002 (149) and in 2003 (221 wins), when his successes included Classics on Russian Rhythm in the 1000 Guineas and Kris Kin in the Derby. He won three British Classics in 1999 - the StanJames.com 1000 Guineas on Wince, the Oaks on Ramruma and the Derby on Oath, his first success in the premier Classic. Though second to Frankie Dettori in the 2004 championship, Fallon enjoyed an excellent season, including the Derby-Oaks double with North Light and Ouija Board. He made a great start at Ballydoyle in 2005, winning both the 2000 and 1000 Guineas respectively with Footstepsinthesand and Virginia Waters. He added his first Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on the Coolmore-owned and Andre Fabre-trained Hurricane Run, on whom he had previously won the Irish Derby. There was another success in the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas with George Washington in 2006 and added that season's Investec Oaks and Irish Oaks with Alexandrova. Out of the saddle, he has frequently made the headlines, in 2003 he was treated in a clinic in Ireland after admitting to a drink problem. In September, 2004, he was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud related to alleged race fixing but was released on bail and the prosecution case collapsed at the subsequent trial, with Fallon being found innocent on all charges. He had been suspended from riding in Britain up to the end of the trial but was able to ride in Ireland and other jurisdictions He collected a second Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe win aboard Dylan Thomas in 2007, his last big race victory before being banned for 18 months after failing a drugs test organised by France Galop, his second such offence. He received a six-month ban for the first drug offence in 2006/2007. He returned to action in September, 2009, and landed the Grade One Goodwood Handicap at Santa Anita, USA, on Gitano Hernando. Controversy erupted again when a racehorse owner at Lingfield Park in March struck the jockey in the face, wrongly believing that Fallon had caused interference to the owner's horse.
TOTESCOOP6 HEADS TO ROYAL ASCOT AS PUNTERS AIM TO LAND ROLLOVER
This weekend’s totescoop6 has a distinctly regal theme to it tomorrow, Saturday, as punters try and solve two races from Royal Ascot in order to land the spoils.
The bet was not won last weekend which means that there is a rollover of £65,311 in the win fund, while the bonus pot has now swelled to £91,233 after the 11 punters chasing it last Saturday drew a blank.
As well as both the Golden Jubilee and the Wokingham from Royal Ascot, the bet includes four races at Newmarket.
Showcasing heads a truly international field for the Golden Jubilee, while Stewards’ Cup winner Genki is favourite for another typically competitive renewal of the Wokingham.
“This weekend’s Scoop6 includes some of the very best racing from the Royal meeting and a single winner could well land a six figure payout,” said totepool spokesman George Primarolo.

BETTING NEWS
Aidan O’Brien may be still awaiting his first winner at Royal Ascot this week but punters believe that the master of Ballydoyle - who boasts 28 past successes at the Royal Meeting - could get off the mark today.
Lillie Langtry is 4/1 favourite for the Coronation Stakes with most firms, having been 5/1 earlier and Simon Clare of Coral reported that “O’Brien may not have had a winner yet this week but all the right faces have been backing Lillie Langtry”.
Meanwhile, stablemate Mikhail Glinka has hardened into 5/2 favouritism from 3/1 with Paddy Power in the Queen’s Vase.
Away from that pair, Pricewise’s selection Himalya has been the best-backed horse in the concluding Buckingham Palace Handicap and is now as short as 8/1, having been 14/1 earlier.

PONIES
Two runners have been given permission by the Stewards to be accompanied to the start by ponies in today’s Group One Coronation Stakes.
The Jim Bolger-trained Gile Na Greine has been allowed to be in last position in the parade before being ponied to the start.
Meanwhile Lady Of The Desert, trained by Brian Meehan, has been permitted to take second last position in the parade before being ponied to the starting stalls.
FACTS FOR TODAY
Royal Ascot always attracts famous folk from the world of sport and the land of celebrity. Today’s Group Three Albany Stakes (2.30pm) sees footballers Claudio Pizarro, formerly of Chelsea, and Newcastle United’s Joey Barton with a runner, the unbeaten Crying Lightening, trained by Peter Chapple-Hyam. Barton’s Electric Feel is also set to contest the Group One Coronation Stakes (3.50pm).
Jim Bolger trains the tongue-twisting Radharcnafarraige who is poised to run in the Albany Stakes having been leased for charity to Galway-born Grainne Seoige, presenter of RTE’s Irish version of Britain’s Got Talent and familiar to viewers of GMTV. The filly’s earnings go to the National Breast Cancer Research Institute in Galway, which has already collected €65,000 after she landed a maiden and a Group Three contest at Naas.
Meanwhile, Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone is among the owners of Group Three Queen’s Vase (5pm) contender Monterey.
The Albany Stakes brings a first Royal Ascot runner for rookie trainer David O’Meara in the shape of Redcar maiden winner Bay Of Fires. The former jump jockey hit the headlines 10 years ago when partnering Bells Life to victory over the Grand National fences in the Aintree Fox Hunters’ Chase.
Alongside O’Meara, trainers seeking a first Royal Ascot success today are Monterey’s handler Robert Mills, Mahmood Al Zarooni, Alan Jarvis, Kenny McPeek, Alan Bailey, Tommy Stack, Harry Dunlop, Marco Botti, Francois Rohaut, Ralph Beckett, Roger Teal, Tom Tate, Gerard Butler, Eoghan O’Neill, Julia Feilden, David Simcock, David Marnane, Ruth Carr, Rod Millman, Ed Vaughan, Jim Goldie, Nigel Tinkler, Giles Bravery, Mark Brisbourne and Michael Dods.
Ghanaati won the Group One Coronation Stakes last year in the blue and white silks of Hamdan Al Maktoum. Should Tabassum land the prize today, the Sheikh would become only the second owner to register back-to-back wins in the mile contest and the first since Lord Chesterfield achieved the feat in 1848 and 1849.
If Sent From Heaven can land the spoils in the mile Group One, trainer Barry Hills will become the first trainer to clinch consecutive successes in the race since Sir Michael Stoute triumphed with Sonic Lady and Milligram in 1986 and 1987, respectively.
Walter Swinburn was in the plate for Stoute on both those occasions and Richard Hills, who partnered Ghanaati 12 months ago, will be hoping Tabassum can prevail so that he can become the latest jockey to win two in a row.

JOCKEYS GIVE THE GROUND A THUMBS UP
Paul Hanagan, rider of the 14th Honeymead, reported: “The ground is good to firm. It has dried up since yesterday so it’s a bit quicker but it’s safe ground.”
