NORFOLK STAKES
APPROVE LANDS THE NORFOLK FOR HIGHCLERE RACING
Approve made amends for defeat in Epsom’s Investec Woodcote Stakes when running out the ready winner of today’s Norfolk Stakes at 16/1.
The winner is based in the Newmarket stable of William Haggas and was ridden by Eddie Ahern, who carried the colours of Highclere Thoroughbred Racing (HTR) whose Bahram Syndicate owns the colt. Ahern won the race six years ago on Blue Dakota.
Asked about the Epsom defeat, Haggas said: “It was down to trainer’s instructions. He was drawn on the outside so I told Eddie to drop him in - I didn’t want to race wide without other horses - and dropping in probably cost him the race. Although we weren’t in the first three, I wasn’t disappointed.”
Harry Herbert, managing director of HTR, concurred with that view, saying: “He was unlucky at Epsom, but it wasn’t the trainer’s fault or anyone’s fault. The gaps didn’t appear because they didn’t go fast enough early on.”
Haggas added: “We all like to have Royal Ascot runners, but I was cursing myself this morning because I felt we should have run in the Windsor Castle Stakes, but it worked out fine.”
Ahern said of today’s race: “I was drawn two and he was nearly the first one out. I didn’t mind if we had to make the running because he had shown he got the trip at Epsom. I wouldn’t want to go any further than six furlongs on him.”
Asked about plans for the colt, Haggas said: “A large glass of champagne is the first plan,” while Herbert said: “We’ll put our heads together. There are 20 members in the syndicate and this is what you aim to achieve when you put syndicates together.”

HANNON CONSIDERING OPTIONS FOR RUNNER-UP-
SMART PRAISES EAVES’ RIDE ON BOLT
The fine form of the Richard Hannon stable at Royal Ascot 2010 continued on day three, with the trainer saddling both the second Reckless Reward and the fifth Zebedee in the opening Group Two Norfolk Stakes.
Richard Hannon junior, assistant trainer to his father, said: “Reckless Reward ran a super race. He is in the Doncaster Sales race at York and Ryan (Moore) said he would have no problem at all in that sort of race.
“He will probably go over six furlongs next time. There is a chance he could go for the July Stakes at Newmarket but we will definitely have a look at sales races for him as they are so valuable. The Gimcrack at York could also be a possibility.
“Zeberdee also ran well and looks like he will also be suited by a step up to six furlongs, which surprised us.”
Back in third was Excel Bolt, who ploughed a lone furrow up the stands’ side from his number one stall.
His trainer Bryan Smart explained: “Tom (Eaves) walked the track before racing and felt that the ground was dead in the middle and that while it wasn’t as fast as on the far side, it was still pretty fast on the stands’ side so he decided to stay there. Otherwise he would have been out on the wing. It was a good decision by Tom and that is why he is stable jockey. He did say it would have been nice to have something to race with.
“Excel Bolt is a small horse but there is a lot more to come and I think we have got a proper horse on our hands. He only cost £5,000 and we are now at standing at Royal Ascot, which is fantastic.
“He will have a month off and then we will decide where he goes next.”
Dane O’Neill, rider of the 11/4 favourite Dinkum Diamond who could only finish sixth, said: “I was tracking Eddie (Ahern) and was happy with where I was, but he just didn’t pick up.”
JOCKEYS’ VIEWS ON THE GOING
Jockeys riding in the first race felt the going was similar to yesterday:
Richard Hughes described it as “perfect”, while Frankie Dettori commented that it was “beautiful, the same as yesterday”.
Philip Makin said: “Maybe it’s dried up a touch from yesterday but it’s very similar. It’s quick ground.”
Martin Dwyer commented: “They’ve done a great job and put enough water on to keep it safe. It is fast ground but there’s a very good covering of grass.”
Race 2 - The Ribblesdale Stakes - Winning Quotes
HIBAAYEB GIVES GODOLPHIN SECOND WINNER OF THE WEEK AS SHE WALTZES HOME IN RIBBLESDALE
Godolphin gained its second winner of the week when 4/1 joint favourite Hibaayeb was the easy three and three-quarter length victor of the Group Two Ribblesdale Stakes. Partnered by Frankie Dettori, the three-year-old daughter of Singspiel came with a strong run from off the pace and was firmly in command inside the last furlong. This was no less than Godolphin’s fifth Ribblesdale Stakes success following Bahr (1998), Fairy Queen (1999), Punctilious (2004) and Flying Cloud (2009).
This was a second significant success for Hibaayeb at Ascot, following her victory in the Group One Meon Valley Stud Fillies’ Mile in September, 2009, when she was under the care of Clive Britain.
Trainer Saeed bin Suroor commented: “This filly has class and was a Group One winner here last year and likes the track.
“She ran well last time out when she was third in France and the better ground today suited her. Today she travelled well and when Frankie asked her, she finished the race very well.
“We will take her home and see how she is but the Irish Oaks is a possible target now.
“I am happy to have had a second winner this week as it is not easy to have two winners in two days at Royal Ascot.”
Frankie Dettori added: “She raced in a tongue-tie last time but I think that the distance was the difference today - she relished a mile and a half. She won the Fillies’ Mile here in the autumn so we knew that she liked the track and the stiff mile and a half is what she wanted. The further we were going, the further she was going to win.
“I know my way round here but I had the horse to do it. I had a good pitch, she was nice and relaxed, and moved out when I wanted to. Everything was perfect and she gave me a fabulous ride.
“The race was run to suit her as they went a good gallop and it was a good performance from her. I guess it will be the Irish Oaks next.
“It looks like Ascot plays to her strengths. She made it look easy.”
Godolphin’s racing manager, Simon Crisford, confirmed that a visit to the Curragh for the Irish Oaks is now on Hibaayeb’s agenda and he also paid tribute to Godolphin’s founder Sheikh Mohammed. He said: “She was really disappointing in the Guineas - she didn’t run a yard - and we were a little surprised by that. We thought that we would go for the Prix Saint-Alary and she ran really well to finish third.
“After that race, Sheikh Mohammed said to keep her for Royal Ascot. He felt that going to Epsom for the Oaks would have been too much, too soon. She will now go for the Irish Oaks.
“She travelled well and always looked like the winner today. It is very satisfying when horses win top-class races as two-year-olds and then come on and win good races the following year, especially as she is a home-bred and by Singspiel.
“I wouldn’t say that there is pressure on Godolphin at Royal Ascot, but with our resources people expect us to do well.”
SECOND RACE PLACED QUOTES
RIBBLESDALE STAKES (GROUP 2)
FAST-FINISHING ELDALIL DELIGHTS CONNECTION
The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Eldalil finished with a wet sail to finish second, three and three-quarter lengths behind the winner Hibaayeb in the Group Two Ribblesdale Stakes.
“She obviously stays and ran a blinder,” said Stoute. “She got the trip well and is progressive.”
Angus Gold, racing manager to owner Hamdan Al Maktoum, added: “It was a big step up and she was slowly into her stride. She was probably a bit further back than we would have ideally wanted and would always struggle against more seasoned fillies from there but I liked the way she came home.
“She was beaten by a good filly, who already had the form in the book, and this was only our third run. The future options are greater because we know she stays and we’ll have to see what Michael wants to do with her, he usually likes to go gently, gently with these fillies.
“Our other runner (sixth-placed Fatanah) didn’t stay.”
Mick Channon was delighted by Gallic Star’s third place. “I thought beforehand that she’d run well, her form was there to see and she’s done nothing wrong.
“She stayed on well today and was maybe a bit unlucky but she wouldn’t have beaten the winner.
“This year a lot of fillies like her seem to have taken a long time to come to themselves for some reason. I’ve no idea where we’ll go now.”
Kieren Fallon, rider of 10th-placed Bikini Babe, reported to the stewards that the filly suffered interference in running, was struck into behind and lost a hind shoe.
BANS FOR O’SHEA AND FORTUNE
Jockey Tadhg O’Shea was suspended for three days (July 1, 2 and 4) following his ride on Eldalil, who finished second in the Ribblesdale Stakes.
The stewards found O’Shea guilty of careless riding at the two furlong marker by transgressing Rule (B) 54.1, in that he manoeuvred left when insufficiently clear causing interference to Gertrude Bell. This had the knock-on effect of impeding Bikini Babe and Awe Inspiring.
At an enquiry on Wednesday the stewards found Jimmy Fortune guilty of using his whip in the wrong place on Riggins, runner-up in the Royal Hunt Cup. Fortune was suspended for a day on Friday, July 2.
THIRD RACE WINNING QUOTES
GOLD CUP (GROUP 1)
UNORTHODOX PASSAGE TO GOLD
Six-year-old Rite Of Passage, whose career began when landing a gamble in a Galway bumper two summers ago, lined up in the Gold Cup exactly three months after his last start when third over two miles and five furlongs in a Cheltenham Festival novices’ hurdle.
But despite the unusual preparation for Flat racing’s most famous staying prize, the Giant’s Causeway gelding - who scored twice on the level last autumn - saw off some more highly-touted rivals to win the Gold Cup at odds of 20/1 when holding off Age Of Aquarius by a neck.
“It’s a race I’ve always wanted to win. It’s one of the great races of the world and I’ve been second in this with both my previous runners Vinnie Roe and Vintage Crop both just getting beaten and, although there were some very good horses in this year’s Gold Cup, I just thought he had an outstanding chance,” said winning trainer Dermot Weld.
“He did it well and I love to train horses over a number of years, that’s one of the joys of training. I also love training stayers
“We probably picked the wrong race at Cheltenham, he ran a good race and it was just too far for him and he probably would have won the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle over two miles. He’s a super, athletic horse and great jumper.
“There were two reasons why I bought him (for 20,000 guineas in October 2005) as a yearling. Firstly, he was a very active horse but also because his grandmother was Dahlia, who won the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes here twice. I thought that if he’d got her genes then he’d be OK. We gave him lots of time to develop. We had a good draw and I left it up to Pat what to do, I just told him to keep handy.
Paddy Power quoted Rite Of Passage at 10/1 for the Melbourne Cup and 14/1 for next year’s Champion Hurdle and Weld added: ”We’ve two candidates for Melbourne as we also have Profound Beauty for it and we will have to see what the handicapper does. The first Tuesday in November is a long way away.
“I suspect he’ll probably reappear in the Irish St Leger and we’ll see how time progresses. He’s obviously a Champion Hurdle prospect in years to come and we’ll take one day at a time.”
Smullen added: “I was always very happy and he quickened like the good horse he is. Having Age Of Aquarius up there with me helped but I didn’t want to join Johnny (Murtagh) too soon and help him because his horse is a real dogged stayer and we had a bit more speed.
“Even after half a mile, being drawn 13 was a big advantage and I was able to save ground all the way round. I was travelling extremely well and just waiting to get out. When the gap came I went - I got out when I needed to and he battled on.
“I’m very fortunate to ride for one of the best trainers in the world and I was gutted when I was beaten on Vinnie Roe in this race but this makes this all the sweeter. This is what it’s all about. You need a stayer and speed to win in Melbourne and he has both.”
Dublin-based owner Ronan Lambe, whose doctorate comes from a PhD in pharmaceuticals, bought Rite Of Passage privately after he had won his bumper debut in the colours of original owner Chris McHale.
“Dermot is a genius of a trainer and I think he first mentioned the Gold Cup in January or February and I thought he was a bit crazy!” recalled Lambe, who has around 20 horses with Weld. “This is the most exciting day of my racing life. I’ve had horses for five years and had a lot of winners but nothing on this scale.
“I bought this horse in February of last year with the intention of running in the Cheltenham Bumper and he finished third (the following month). We then put him aside with the intention of running on the Flat and he ran away with the Leopardstown November Handicap and he won by eight lengths.
“The ground was heavy that day and I have to admit I was worried about that today. Pat Smullen rode a magnificent race and it was a great training performance because he’d had lots of niggling problems with his back and things.
“It was only two weeks ago that he really came right and he did a super gallop at Leopardstown 10 days ago and that made us more optimistic coming into this
“Melbourne was also one of the targets that Dermot mentioned but I guess that he will have a big weight there now so I think it might be unlikely we’ll go there. Today has been a his star day. “
STING FOR SMULLEN AFTER GOLD CUP VICTORY
Jockey Pat Smullen received a four-day suspension after winning the Gold Cup on Rite Of Passage.
The Irishman was adjudged to have pushed his way out of a pocket turning for home, causing interference to the fifth Ask and 11th Akmal. Found guilty of careless riding, Smullen was suspended on July 1, 2, 4 and 5.
THIRD RACE QUOTES
GOLD CUP
MURTAGH ‘SICK’ AFTER DEFEAT ON AQUARIUS
Johnny Murtagh came close to riding his third successive Gold Cup winner when finishing second on Age Of Aquarius.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained four-year-old became engaged in a home-straight slog with winner Rite Of Passage before succumbing by a neck. Purple Moon was a further six lengths back in third ahead of fourth-placed Spanish raider Bannaby.
Murtagh said: “It was a really, really top-class race. They went a hell of a gallop and my lad stayed well. He loved the fast ground and I thought he had it won turning for home, but just caught in the last 60 yards. He’s a very brave horse and I’m sick.”
Age Of Aquarius’s joint-owner, Derrick Smith said: “He stayed every yard of the trip and was just beaten by a better horse on the day. We’re delighted, but when you get so close it’s a little disappointing. I’ve been told he was a little on his toes before the race, but better that way than the other. We’re happy with him, just the result wasn’t right.”
Luca Cumani, trainer of Purple Moon, said: “He’s run very well when you consider he’s been travelling and racing around the world and missed most of last year through injury - they were only little things, the sort athletes get.
“I think we’ll be inclined to look towards the Goodwood Cup and Lonsdale Stakes now, and Craig [Bennett, Purple Moon’s owner] has said we should probably put him in the Melbourne Cup.”
Trainer Mauricio Delcher-Sanchez said of Bannaby’s effort: “He has run very well to finish fourth and I’m very happy. I had belief that he could win turning for home, but in the final 200 metres he had no more to give. Maybe softer ground would suit him better. He will now recuperate before we make plans.”
THREE-DAY BAN FOR MURTAGH
Jockey Johnny Murtagh has pickled up a three-day ban following his ride on second-placed Age Of Aquarius in the Gold Cup.
The stewards held that Murtagh had used his whip with excessive frequency.
The ban takes effect on Thursday, Friday and Sunday, July 1, 2 and 4.
Race 3 - The Gold Cup - Beaten Favourites
GROUND TOO QUICK FOR ASK
Ask started 11/4 favourite for the Gold Cup, the Group One highlight on the third day of Royal Ascot, but could fare no better than fifth.
His jockey Ryan Moore commented: “The ground was just too quick for him. It was also a rough race.”
Tom Queally partnered the well-supported Manifest, but he was soon beaten and eventually came home in 10th.
Queally said: “I don’t think he stayed and he also lost a shoe.”
FOURTH RACE QUOTES
BRITANNIA STAKES
NO OBSTACLES TO MOULD’S SUCCESS WITH NOTE
Raymond Mould, a well-known owner of jumpers, seemed a little confused after his Ransom Note won the Britannia Stakes from 26 rivals that were spread across the course.
Mould joked: “I’m not used to this sort of thing - the races are over far too quickly, and when they split like that it’s difficult to know what’s going on!”
He was speaking in the winner’s enclosure after Ransom Note, prepared by Barry Hills and ridden by the trainer’s son Michael, had come home stylishly looking value for more than the official winning distance of half a length. Among onlookers were Nigel Twiston-Davies, who trained Bindaree to win the Grand National in 2002 carrying Mould’s colours.
Mould continued: “I’m delighted, because it went exactly as Michael said it would. This type of racing is not comparable to jumping - the Gold Cup is the Gold Cup and the Grand National is something else.”
He added of the winning trainer: “He’s a genius - I call him the Iron Man. He’s had so many mishaps in the last few years and it’s great to see him here.”
Michael Hills could barely contain his admiration for the horse, saying: “I love him - he ticks every box. He a gorgeous horse to ride and has a lovely cruising speed.and a turn of foot. As long as I could do the steering it was a job done. We had a few horses that ran poorly last week and it put the jitters up us, but they’ve come here and given us some smashing rides.”
Barry Hills said: “This has been the plan all the way through. He won early on at Doncaster, was beaten at Newmarket, but has done really well at home since.”
Race 4 - The Britannia Handicap - Placed Quotes
SECOND, THIRD AND FOURTH COME FROM LOW NUMBERS
The second, third and fourth horses home in the Britannia Handicap (run over the straight mile) were drawn 2, 4 and 10 respectively, going against the general trend of horses being favoured by a high draw so far this week.
Richard Hannon, trainer of the half-length runner-up Invincible Soul, said: “I am delighted.
“When we saw that he was drawn low, we decided to stay there rather than mess around trying to move over to the other side.
“I don’t know where we go now with him - that’s messed up his handicap mark hasn’t it?!”
Mark Johnston saddled both the third, Greyfriarschorista and the fourth, Secretive.
He said: “Joe (Fanning, rider of Greyfriarschorista) said he could see the far side was in front and that he had to go for it a bit earlier than he would have done normally. Joe felt he was sitting easy and so he went round the leaders and tried to force it.
“All three of my horses ran well, although Sea Lord (8th) met some trouble in running.
“I thought that after the first two days the stands’ side needed to be given a chance. There is no point trying to move across as you just lose ground.”
Two jockeys were suspended following the Britannia Stakes - Christophe Soumillon was banned on July 1 for using his whip down the shoulder of sixth-placed Audacity Of Hope in the forehand position. Andrew Mullen, who finished fourth on Secretive, was given three days, July 1, 2 and 4, for using his stick with excessive frequency.
Race 5 - The Hampton Court Stakes - Winning Quotes
AFSARE SCORES FOR CUMANI AND FALLON
Afsare survived a stewards’ enquiry to give trainer Luca Cumani his 11th Royal Ascot winner and the first since 1997, while jockey Kieren Fallon was recording his first Royal Ascot success since 2006 and 28th in total.
There was just a short-head separating the winner and the Queen’s Quadrille at the finish. The stewards looked into possible interference between the first two horses home and although Afsare kept the race, it was held that Fallon had failed to correct Afsare drifting into Quadrille and causing interference. He kept the race as the stewards held that the interference had not improved the horses’s final position. Fallon was however handed a two-day ban (Thursday and Friday, July 1 and 2).
Luca Cumani said of the winning 9/4 favourite: “It wasn’t until on the line that we knew we had it - I had an inkling when they flashed passed the post that he was ahead and then the replay confirmed that. We then had to survive the stewards’ enquiry but all’s well that ends well.
“It’s been too long since I have had a winner here and these things happen. We probably didn’t have the right horses at the right time or we have made a mess of it.
“Afsare is a progressive horse. I need to see the race again, but I think he might improve for stepping up to a mile and a half. While I think he might get a mile and a half, he is not a Leger horse - he has too much speed. We could maybe look at York now.
“The positives are that I trained both his dam and the dam of his sire Dubawi. The negative is that dates me! Credit must go to his owner Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, who has been a tremendous supporter of the yard for many years.”
Kieren Fallon added: “It’s great for Mr Cumani and his horses have been in great form. He has been really good to me since I came back and obviously the horses are bouncing and the yard is buzzing - let’s hope that it continues.
“My horse is still a big baby and he is still getting there. I wanted to leave it as late as possible and I let Richard (Hughes on Quadrille) get first run on me but I was a long way up there, a bit too long, and he has drifted slightly towards Richard, who was battling really hard. It was a ding, dong and it was great to get my head down at the line.
“I didn’t want to be involved in an enquiry with the Queen’s horse but we got the result and that is the main thing.
“This is where it all happens - it’s exciting and it is a great buzz. It’s brilliant when you are winning but not so nice when you are not. It’s great for Mr Cumani to get back up here again. He has had some great horses over the years and let’s hope we can get some more.”
FIFTH RACE PLACED QUOTES
HAMPTON COURT STAKES (LISTED)
QUADRILLE JUST DENIED FOR QUEEN
The Queen’s Quadrille missed out by a short-head in the Listed Hampton Court Stakes to the disappointment of trainer Richard Hannon. There was a stewards’ enquiry into interference from the winner Afsare into Quadrille but the places remained unaltered.
“What a shame, it would have been lovely for Her Majesty to have won,” said Hannon. “He ran a stormer and a nod has won it. At least he does not pick up a penalty so we could maybe look for a handicap at the July Meeting, but I haven’t really thought about it.”
Michael Bell was delighted with the effort of fast-finishing third Wigmore Hall. “Jamie (Spencer) felt he was a bit unlucky because he couldn’t get out but I’m thrilled as he’s a very nice horse in the making. He’s a proper horse.”
SIXTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
KING GEORGE V HANDICAP
DANDINO COULD BE LEGER HORSE
Trainer James Given believes his first Royal Ascot winner, Dandino, could develop into a St Leger horse after landing the concluding King George V Handicap under Paul Mulrennan in the colours of the Elite Racing Club to remain unbeaten this year.
“It’s a very good feeling to have my first winner here,” said Lincolnshire-based Given. “This horse was a very green last year and took a while to get going. I warned everyone before his first start that he was very green but he’s grown up as a three-year-old this year.
“He’d got more and more professional this year and when he won at Epsom last time he did it in the manner of a Group horse in a handicap. I thought today was one more window for him in a handicap.”
St Leger sponsor Ladbrokes rate Dandino a 14/1 chance for the final Classic, at Doncaster on Saturday, September 11, and Given added: “The St Leger was something we talked about after Epsom and his temperament is very good. He stayed on strongly and probably likes slightly quicker ground. I should think the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York or the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood would be possibilities.”
SIXTH RACE QUOTES
KING GEORGE V STAKES
HOME-BRED CAUCUS RUNS A FINE RACE AT THE MEETING
In the words of trainer Sir Michael Stoute it was a case of “finding one too good,” after his Selective finished runner-up to Dandino in the day’s closing encounter, the King George V Handicap.
This may prove to have been a handicap that punched above its weight, for the first three are invariably Listed-class or better, and that is certainly the hope of trainer Hughie Morrison who saddled third-placed Caucus.
Caucus, who is bred by owner Philippa Cooper of Sussex-based Normandie Stud, broke his duck for Morrison at Chepstow recently and was going up several notches in this company.
Morrison said: “We are thrilled by his run, because he’s only won a maiden and he’s very inexperienced. He would have been right on the girths of the runner-up with another furlong.
“I only entered him with the hope of getting a run, and then we got into the race with a racing weight so we were pleased to get that far, let alone be placed. A Group or Listed horse usually wins this so we’ve got to be happy.
“I doubt he will go to Goodwood because I’d prefer to keep him to flat tracks, but we’ll see what the ground’s like because I think he’d be happier with a little dig in the ground.”

Winning jockey:-Name: Fallon, Kieren Francis Date Of Birth: February 22, 1965 Background: Became apprentice to Kevin Prendergast when 17, riding his first winner the following year. Moved to Britain when still an apprentice in 1988, working for Jimmy Fitzgerald and then Lynda Ramsden in 1993. Signed to ride for Henry Cecil in 1996, and became champion jockey for the first time in 1997 with 202 wins, also winning his first two classics. Joined Sir Michael Stoute in 2000 after acrimonious split with Cecil, but suffered a bad fall at Royal Ascot that nearly ended his career, and ruled him out of the rest of the season. Replaced Jamie Spencer as Ballydoyle stable jockey in 2005, although continued to ride for Stoute when allowed. Charged with race-fixing by City of London Police in 2006, and banned from riding in Britain pending trial. Also failed drugs test in France, resulting in worldwide six month ban in the same year. Returned to action in June 2007, although gave up riding in October 2007 to concentrate impending court case. Cleared of attempting to defraud Betfair customers when trial collapsed in December 2007, only to be found guilty of failing a drugs test in France in August 2007. Started riding out for Sir Michael Stoute after being given an 18 month ban and launched his own website. BIG ASK FOR MANIFEST IN FAMOUS COLOURS
A first Gold Cup: Prince Khalid Abdulla, who is miles clear in Britain’s leading owners table for this season, has never won the Gold Cup, nor has champion jockey Ryan Moore, who achieved his greatest ambition in the Prince’s colours when winning the Investec Derby on Workforce. Today Moore rides Ask, while the Prince relies upon Manifest.
Gold Cup masters: Henry Cecil, who trains Manifest, is bidding to win the race for a sixth time. Cecil and Aidan O’Brien have both recorded four straight wins in the race (Cecil with Le Moss in 1979 and 1980, and Ardross in 1981 and 1982, O’Brien with Yeats in 2006 to 2009). O’Brien will claim five in a row if Age Of Aquarius wins today.
Gold Cup virgins: William Buick, who has yet to ride in the race, partners Darley Sun, while Tadhg O’Shea makes his debut on Tastahil. Mauricio Delcher-Sanchez, who has never run a horse in the Gold Cup, saddles Bannaby today. Delcher-Sanchez trained Equiano to win the King’s Stand Stakes in 2008. That horse remains Spain’s only Royal Ascot winner.
Some hoping to follow in Dad’s footsteps: Reckless Reward (Norfolk Stakes), whose sire, Choisir, won the King’s Stand Stakes and Golden Jubilee Stakes in 2003; Acquainted (Ribblesdale Stakes), a daughter of 2005 St James’s Palace Stakes hero Shamardal; Middle Club (Ribblesdale Stakes) and Secretive (Britannia Stakes), whose sire Fantastic Light won the Prince of Wales’s Stakes in 2001; Sea Lord (Britannia Stakes) and Caucus (King George V Stakes) are sons of Cape Cross, successful in the Queen Anne Stakes in 1999; Zafeen, winner of the 2003 St James’s Palace Stakes, sired White Devil (Britannia Stakes); Contract Caterer, Life And Soul and Rawnaq (King George V Stakes), sons of Azamour, who won the St James’s Palace Stakes in 2004 and Prince of Wales’s Stakes 12 months later; London Stripe (King George V Stakes), whose sire, Rock Of Gibraltar, landed the 2002 St James’s Palace Stakes.
A blank for Ireland? After two days of the 2010 meeting no horses trained in Ireland have won - it is 20 years since the Irish drew a Royal Ascot blank, but Aidan O’Brien (five runners), Dermot Weld, Ger Lyons and John Murphy (one apiece) all have runners today.
Keeping it in the family: Gertrude Bell (Ribblesdale Stakes) is trained by John Gosden and owned by his wife Rachel Hood.
Benny has a dream: Pop god Benny Andersson, a member of Swedish superstars Abba, will see his colours carried in the King George V Stakes by Berling. Andersson paid 650,000gns for the horse as a yearling.

Alverta
Alverta has the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes over six furlongs at Royal Ascot on June 19 as her prime summer target before a potential tilt at the Darley July Cup over the same distance at Newmarket the following month. The seven-year-old mare has peaked since the turn of the year, winning the Group Two Breeders’ Classic over six furlongs at Randwick, Australia, on February 13, and then going down by a head in a Listed handicap over the same course and distance on March 13. Alverta booked her ticket to England with a two-length victory over Gold Water in the Group One Coolmore Classic Handicap over an extended seven furlongs at Rosehill on March 20. Those triumphs came after Alverta was retired but then put back into training after failing to get in foal. She had a barrier trial at Muswellbrook on May 20 to prepare her for Royal Ascot. The mare, who failed to sell as a youngster because of bad legs, is a tough and consistent campaigner, with victories from six furlongs to a mile. Prior to the peaks of the past few months, her major successes came in Listed handicaps, while she also finished a close third to Absolut Glam in the 2008 Group One Queensland Breeders & Tattersall’s Winter Stakes at Eagle Farm. Alverta also ran Takeover Target to a nose when runner-up to the popular champion and Royal Ascot veteran in a six-furlong Listed race at Randwick in December, 2007. Alverta caused her trainer some concern after losing almost 40kg during the journey from Australia to her UK base at Abington Place Stables in Newmarket - with half lost on the trip from Scone to Melbourne and the rest on the flight to England. She has put most of the weight back on after arriving in England on May 28.

Paul Messara AUS
Paul Messara, 31, is the son of Arrowfield Stud’s John and Kris Messara. Like his father, he attended Riverview College in Sydney before attaining a Communications (Business) degree at Bond University. But Messara always wanted to train racehorses and embarked upon a tour of the world’s top training centres to gain experience. He worked for leading trainers in England, Ireland and France, as well as at Shadai Stallion Station in Japan. Upon returning to Australia in 2005, he began training from stables on Arrowfield Stud at Scone in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales, before establishing state-of-the-art facilities, the 50-box Arrowfield Training Centre, on a property adjacent to the stud, which he moved to in July, 2007. Messara further purchased the Randwick Stables at Randwick racecourse to provide a Sydney base. Alverta gave Messara his first stakes winner and her Coolmore Classic victory was the trainer’s first Group One success. That first Group One win saw his octogenarian grandfather Maurice send the trainer all the horses he owned after promising to do so once Paul broke his top-flight duck. The trainer enjoyed his first Melbourne success when his classy juvenile, the AUS$1million yearling Beneteau, landed the Group Three Prelude Stakes at Caulfield on February 6. Messara splashed out AUS$3.4 million on 11 yearlings at the Easter Sale in April, 2010. He lists Happy Days as his favourite TV show and makes short films as a hobby.
Arrowfield Pastoral Pty Ltd
Arrowfield Pastoral Pty Ltd’s yellow and black diamonds with yellow cap silks represent one of Australia’s pioneering stallion farms. Arrowfield was established in 1842 and enjoyed great success although by the time it was bought by current owner, John Messara, in the mid 1980s it was better known for its wine than horses but all that has changed in the past two decades. Messara moved to Australia aged 11 in 1958 from Alexandria in Egypt, attending Riverview College in Sydney and gaining a degree in commerce from the University of NSW before founding his own successful stockbroking firm. For tax reasons, he decided to invest in either horses or nuts. He chose the former and has gone on to become arguably the most influential figure in Australian breeding since buying his first mare, Scomeld, in 1978. Like John Magnier of Coolmore in Europe, he was an innovator in the stallion business and seized on the importance of shuttling international bloodlines to Australia. In 1987, he paid AUS$6 million to bring the champion French sire Kenmare to Australia before teaming up with Coolmore to spend a reported £4 million to buy Danehill from Khalid Abdulla in 1989. Coolmore bought out Arrowfield’s share in 1994 and Danehill went on to be the most-influential modern-day stallion in Australia as well as having a similar impact in Europe. In 1996, Arrowfield relocated to a property at Scone in the Segenhoe Valley and has been home to a string of successful stallions including the champions Flying Spur and current flag-bearer Redoute’s Choice. In June, 2008, Messara was made an Officer in the Order of Australia for his "services to the thoroughbred horseracing industry, particularly through the introduction of best practice initiatives in the areas of reproduction and stud management”.
Tye Angland
Tye Angland, 20, started out with Hawkesbury trainer Garry Frazer and was one of the leading “hoops” (apprentices) in Australia before graduating to the senior ranks. He already has a significant following in his homeland where he is one of the country’s most exciting young riders. He secured his first Group One triumph aged 19 aboard Black Piranha in the Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm in June, 2009, after a run of three runner-up finishes on the horse in top-flight contests. The Paul Messara-trained Alverta provided his second Group One triumph in the Coolmore Classic Handicap at Rosehill on March 20. Angland is not from a horseracing background, although riding is second nature. Raised at rural Wantabadgery in the Wagga Wagga district of New South Wales, his father was a bull rider and Angland was national junior champion in that arena. Angland’s brothers Cody and Rhys compete on Australia’s top rodeo circuit, having gained experience in the US. The youngster was spotted by Glen Frazer while playing polocrosse for New South Wales with the former jockey’s son, Troy. Angland started riding for Frazer’s brother at Hawkesbury in 2005, while still in school. That was the first time he sat on a racehorse and he credits his rapid rise to his bull riding experience. Like many apprentices, Angland went through a quiet spell but after teaming up with Black Piranha’s trainer Con Karakatsanis and trainer Tim Martin, he found himself back in the winner’s circle. He rode four consecutive winners in one day for Martin at Grafton, including the Grafton Guineas. Angland is a Brisbane Broncos rugby league fan and rates his all-time favourite player as Darren Lockyer. He credits fellow jockey Grant Buckley as the biggest influence on his career.

Happy Zero
A full-brother to talented Hong Kong performer Triumphant Unicorn, Happy Zero was purchased by his trainer John Moore for AUS$425,000 at the 2006 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale in Australia. He made a winning debut for Moore and owner David Boehm when posting an impressive four-length victory in a Class Four handicap over five furlongs at Sha Tin, Hong Kong, in December, 2008. Happy Zero progressed through the handicapping ranks at Sha Tin with ease, recording of a pair comfortable Class Three wins over six and seven furlongs before posting an equally impressive success on his Class Two debut over seven furlongs. After suffering the first defeat of his career when coming home fourth in a another seven-furlong Class Two handicap at Sha Tin, Happy Zero returned to winning ways on his final appearance of the 2008/09 campaign, recording a neck victory in a Class One handicap, again over seven furlongs at Sha Tin. He continued his meteoric rise through the ranks at Sha Tin at the start of the 2009/10 season, scoring over five furlongs in the HK Group Three Sha Tin Sprint Trophy Handicap in October and excelling over a furlong further in the HK Group Two Cathay Pacific International Sprint Trial in November, when he had the likes of Sacred Kingdom and Joy And Fun behind him. Despite that victory, connections decided not to run Happy Zero in the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint, electing instead to step the Danzero gelding up in trip for the Group One Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Mile and he posted an excellent performance on his first try over the distance to take second behind Good Ba Ba. He dropped down to six furlongs for the HK Group One Chairman’s Sprint Prize on February 21, finishing third behind Sacred Kingdom, prior to posting a first HK Group One victory with a short-head success over Fellowship in the seven-furlong Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup on March 14. After being third in the six-furlong HK Group Two Sprint Cup on May 1, Happy Zero travelled to Kranji, Singapore, for his first start outside of Hong Kong in the Krisflyer International Sprint on May 16. After being held up in the six-furlong Group One race, Happy Zero came with a strong late run to take third behind surprise winner Green Birdie and local champion Rocket Man. He is lodging at Andrew Balding’s Park House Stables at Kingsclere in Berkshire.

John Moore HK
Born March 17, 1950, John Moore hails from a racing dynasty that has been heavily involved in Hong Kong racing since the inception of professional racing in the former British colony in 1971. Moore’s father George was a legendary jockey in his native Australia, securing 10 Sydney jockey premierships, and he also enjoyed top-class success throughout the world, winning a host of races including in Europe the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (1959 Saint Crespin), the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas (1959 Taboun, 1967 Royal Palace), the StanJames.com 1000 Guineas (1967 Fleet), the Investec Derby (1967 Royal Palace) and the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes (1967 Busted). John Moore’s brother Gary was French champion jockey as well as leading Hong Kong jockey on eight occasions, while his aunt Margaret was married to three-time Classic-winning jockey Garnet Bougoure. When George retired from the saddle in 1971, he turned his hand to training initially in France and Australia and then Hong Kong, where he was leading trainer on 11 occasions before announcing his retirement in 1985. John was assistant to his father before taking out his own licence on his father’s retirement and he has gone on to become the all-time leading trainer in Hong Kong, becoming the first handler to send out 1,000 winners in the territory on March 19, 2008. Seldom seen at the races without his trademark Panama hat and safari suit, Moore cites eight-time Group One winner Viva Pataca as the best horse that he has trained. The Marju gelding, who raced under the name of Comic Strip when trained by Sir Mark Prescott in Britain, gave Moore one of the highlights of his career when scoring in the Group One Audemars Piguet QE II Cup at Sha Tin in April, 2007, barely 40 minutes after stable companion Able One had triumphed in the Group One Champions Mile. Other notable recent winners for Moore include the 2008 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint victor Inspiration and Collection, who was formerly trained in the UK by William Haggas before going on to triumph for his current handler in the Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Cup and the Citibank Gold Cup. Moore has been the leading Hong Kong trainer (in terms of prize-money won) for the past four seasons and is on course to retain his title for a fifth time this term, having registered nearly HK$90,000,000 in prize-money already with over 50 winners to his name.
David Boehm
David Boehm, 53, is the chairman and owner of Wolmar Investments Limited, a Hong Kong-based company which focuses on investments in natural resources and real estate world-wide. He has been involved in the ownership of more than 30 horses and currently has three horses racing in his colours in Hong Kong (Happy Zero, Boss and the former Aga Khan-owned/John Oxx-trained Eyshal), and part-owns a further three horses in Australia. While Happy Zero is Boehm’s first Group One winner, he also holds a soft spot for Art Trader (formerly with Amanda Perrett), who triumphed in the HK Group Two Chairman’s Trophy in 2006 and holds the track record for nine furlongs at Happy Valley. He has been involved with John Moore for the past 20 years (his sole trainer in Hong Kong) and the Australian horses he part owns are currently in the care of John Hawkes and Chris Waller, although he has had horses with Gerald Ryan and Anthony Cummings in the past.
Darren Beadman
Born November 17, 1965, in Australia, Darren Beadman is a riding legend with a host of Group One wins to his name, including two Melbourne Cups aboard Kingston Rule (1990) and Saintly (1996). He was raised in the Yass district near Canberra and took a bus to primary school with Michael Freedman, younger brother of future leading trainer Lee Freedman. He moved to Sydney at the age of 15 as apprentice to Theo Green at Rosehill racetrack and went on to forge successful associations with leading trainers Bart Cummings and John Hawkes. He was champion apprentice in 1982/1983 and again in 1984/1985 while he went on to land eight New South Wales Jockeys' Premierships. His first major success came on Inspired in the 1984 Golden Slipper, Australia's premier race for two-year-olds, which he again won in 1997. Beadman caused a stir when quitting the saddle to become a Christian minister in 1997. The move followed his conversion to Christianity, which came in the wake of his daughter Rachel being born deaf. His self-imposed exile ended at Rosehill, Sydney, on January 8, 2000, when he rode Aviano in the Beadman's Back Handicap. He gained the elusive Cox Plate/Melbourne Cup double aboard Saintly in 1996 and was also associated with the champions Octagonal and Lohnro. He now rides primarily in Hong Kong and is John Moore’s retained jockey. His son Mitchell is also a jockey. He was inducted into the Australian Hall of Fame in 2007 - the youngest jockey ever to receive this honour and the first while still riding. He has had 40 winners in Hong Kong so far this season (up to June 16).

Joy And Fun
A half-brother to the dual Australian Group One winner Zarita, Joy And Fun was purchased for the modest sum of NZ$15,000 at the 2004 New Zealand Bloodstock Weanling Sale. He made his Hong Kong debut when fourth in a six-furlong turf handicap at Sha Tin on October 29, 2006, and built on that promising start when readily winning over the same course and distance the following month. In a productive first season in Hong Kong, Joy And Fun won four of his subsequent seven starts (all at Sha Tin) between seven furlongs and a mile, finishing second on the other three occasions. Rising through the handicapping ranks, Joy And Fun continued to impress at Sha Tin and Happy Valley throughout the 2007/08 season, posting solid efforts in ultra-competitive Class One and Class Two contests, including a head success in a Class One handicap over seven furlongs in March, 2008. He made the step up to Pattern company the following month and was far from disgraced when coming home fifth to Armada in the mile HK Group Two Chairman’s Trophy at Sha Tin, before filling the same spot behind Good Ba Ba over the same course and distance in the Group One Champion’s Mile that April. He returned to handicap company, recording a comfortable success in a mile Class One contest but ended the 2007/08 term with two relatively disappointing efforts, coming home fourth in the seven-furlong HK Grade Three Premier Cup and taking eighth in a Class One contest over a mile. Joy And Fun posted a string of pleasing performances in Group and handicap company during the first half of the 2008/09 term without winning, including when seventh in the Group One Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Mile. After that effort behind Good Ba Ba, Joy And Fun spent the rest of the season mainly contesting Group contests, recording a pair of HK Group Two victories over seven furlongs. Despite having raced at around a mile for most of his career, Joy And Fun has this season been re-invented as a sprinter and he has performed admirably well over six furlongs at Sha Tin including when coming third in both the HK Group Three Cathay Pacific International Sprint Trial in November and the Group One Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint, the final leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, in December. He made his sole career appearance over five furlongs when taking sixth behind Sacred Kingdom in the HK Group One Kent & Curwen Centenary Sprint Cup on January 31 and warmed up for his international campaign by coming fifth behind the same horse in the six-furlong HK Group One Chairman’s Sprint Prize on February 21. Joy And Fun shot to international prominence when taking the Group Three Al Quoz Sprint over six furlongs on turf at Meydan on Dubai World Cup night, March 27, and he came home sixth on his final start prior to Royal Ascot in the Group One Krisflyer International Sprint, also over six furlongs, at Kranji, Singapore, on May 16. He is based at Nick Littmoden’s Newmarket yard while in Britain.

Derek Cruz HK
The older brother of fellow Hong Kong trainer Tony, Derek Cruz enjoyed a less spectacular career as a jockey than his sibling, recording just two victories between 1979 and 1982. Born on May 23, 1955, Derek has become one of the leading trainers in Hong King since obtaining his licence in 1991, saddling over 350 winners. He enjoyed his first Group One success when Natural Blitz won the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Cup at Sha Tin in December, 2005. He has also enjoyed big race success with Wind Dancer, who landed the Sha Tin Vase in 1993, and Concert Boss, successful in the 1994 Centenary Vase. In August, 2009, Cruz was given the chance to train leading Hong Kong performer Good Ba Ba by his owner John Yuen Se Kit and he sent out the multiple champion to an historic third successive victory in the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Mile in December. Good Ba Ba subsequently returned to the care of his former handler Andreas Schultz but Cruz enjoyed further international recognition when Joy And Fun landed the valuable Group Three Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan’s Dubai World Cup meeting in March. His sons, Trevor (27) and Martin (23), have been responsible for Joy And Fun since the horse’s arrival in England. Trevor has lived in London for 10 years, while Martin was a chef in London for four years before becoming an assistant to his father 18 months ago.
Mr & Mrs Johnny Wong Chun Nam
Johnny Wong Chun Nam, 62, has business interests in the fashion, food and drinks industries. His horses are managed by Derek Cruz and it was on the trainer’s recommendation that Wong purchased Joy And Fun. He also has a number of horses in training and pre-training in New Zealand. Among other horses to race for Wong is Derek’s Choice, whose finest hour came when winning a pair of handicaps at Happy Valley in the 2000/01 season.
Brett Doyle
Born in Newmarket on August 30, 1972, Brett Doyle almost never made it as a jockey as he was so badly injured in a motorcycle accident in the early days of his apprenticeship to Clive Brittain in Newmarket, that any sort of riding career looked extremely doubtful. But he made such a good recovery that he was able to resume at Carlburg Stables and rode his first winner on Quiet Achiever at Pontefract on October 9, 1989. The biggest race he has won in England is the 1995 Group One Sussex Stakes on Sayyedati for Brittain, and he has also been successful in Royal Ascot’s King Edward VII Stakes on Amfortas, the Premio Parioli and the Mehl Mulhens Rennen on Air Express, the Chesham Stakes on World Premier and the Ayr Gold Cup on Sarcita. In 1997 he went to ride in Hong Kong for Andy Leung and the partnership lasted more than three years. He has combined riding in both the UK and Hong Kong during the past decade, having enjoyed more than 120 winners in the former British colony. Doyle has also ridden in Japan, where he gained Classic success aboard No Reason in the 2002 Japanese 2000 Guineas. His best British total of winners in a year was 63 in 1995, while he managed 62 victories in 2001. He has been riding regularly in Hong Kong again since 2008. He earlier won both the Hong Kong - Macau Trophy and the Macau Hong Kong Trophy with Crown's Gift in 2004. He is Andy Leung’s retained jockey again and has had 14 winners so far this season (up to June 16), including a double last month, and partnered 15 winners in 2009. He rode Joy And Fun to victory in the valuable Group Three Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan’s Dubai World Cup meeting in March.

Kinsale King
Kinsale King is named after the town of Kinsale in County Cork, where his owner Patrick Sheehy grew up. The Kentucky-bred son of Yankee Victor went through the sales ring twice - a $27,000 yearling purchase at Keeneland’s September Sale in 2006, he was bought by current owner for $67,000 at Barretts May Two-Year-Old Sale the following year. He was put into training with South Californian handler Jesus Mendoza, making his racecourse debut when coming third in a six-furlong Cushion Track maiden at Santa Anita on February 22, 2008. Kinsale King opened his account over the same course and distance the following month, after which he was given a late nomination for the Triple Crown and transferred to Eoin Harty. Foot problems forced Kinsale King to miss nine months and he failed to shine on two starts in minor contests for his new trainer - coming home fifth over six furlongs on Cushion Track at Hollywood Park in December, 2008, and fading to ninth over a furlong further on the newly installed Pro Ride at Santa Anita in January, 2009. After another lengthy absence, Kinsale King was switched to Carl O’Callaghan, who decided to work the gelding on turf to protect his fragile hooves. Rejuvenated by his new training regime, allied with some expert treatment from O’Callaghan’s blacksmith Robert Guest, Kinsale King posted an all-the-way victory on his first start for his new trainer, obliging at odds of 61/1 in a six-furlong allowance optional claimer on the Pro-Ride of Santa Anita on October 30. He stepped up on that effort to give his handler a first Graded success, gamely taking the Polytrack Grade Three Vernon O Underwood Stakes at Hollywood Park over six furlongs on December 6, 2009. Kinsale King made his first start of 2010 in the Pro-Ride Grade Two Palos Verdes Handicap at Santa Anita on January 23, when he posted a half-length victory over Ventana. Connections decided to aim their star sprinter at the Grade One Dubai Golden Shaheen at Meydan on March 27 and the five-year-old warmed up for his Middle Eastern assignment by working on Tapeta at Golden Gate Fields. He completed a remarkable rise through the racing ranks when beating Singapore champion Rocket Man by half a length in the US$2 million six-furlong feature on Tapeta. Kinsale King worked over half a mile on dirt under Kieren Fallon at Belmont Park, New York, on Thursday, June 3. He is staying at Abington Place Stables in Newmarket after arriving on June 7.

Carl O’Callaghan USA
Born on December 7, 1975, Carl O’Callaghan originally hails from County Clare, Ireland. Although his family were not directly involved in racing (his father is a musician), O’Callaghan grew up surrounded by ponies and started riding aged three. By the age of eight, he was mucking out and riding out for local trainer John Hassett. Having been “useless at school”, he bought a one-way ticket to New York in 1990 but became disillusioned breaking yearlings on an upstate farm. After a short spell living on the streets (he still helps homeless charities), he started working for leading New York trainer John Kimmel at Belmont Park when he was 16, spending seven years with the handler, before moving on to link up with Todd Pletcher, with whom he also spent seven years. Whilst working for Pletcher, O’Callaghan rode horses such as Scat Daddy, Magna Graduate, Host and Forest Danger. After heading to California in 2005, O’Callaghan spent three years working as a freelance for trainers Matt Chew and Lisa Lewis before taking out his own licence last year. He started out with two horses, had five in March and, after the Dubai success, has seen his string increase to 48. He lists Super Horse, Highlander Racing and Andreas Loizu as his three main clients and credits David Greaves and Norman Rodriguez as his two primary assistants. O’Callaghan enjoyed a first Graded success when Kinsale King triumphed in the Grade Three Vernon O Underwood Stakes at Hollywood Park on December 6, 2009, and celebrated an initial Group One success when the same horse landed the Dubai Golden Shaheen at Meydan on March 27. Television viewers saw O’Callaghan celebrate exuberantly in Dubai with what he describes as his “Irish river dance”. O’Callaghan, like his father Shay, is an accomplished singer and guitarist, performing at weddings and parties and his four CDs are sold to benefit an American cancer charity. He feeds Kinsale King on a special diet that includes Guinness and eggs.
Sheehy LLC
Born on January 29, 1940, in Co Cork, Ireland, Dr Patrick Sheehy emigrated to the United States in 1966 and currently works as an oncologist in Newport Beach, California. He grew up surrounded by horses and enjoyed his first foray into the world of thoroughbred ownership in 1970, when setting up a partnership in his native Ireland with his two brothers, and began taking an interest in the southern Californian racing circuit in 1976. Sheehy, whose brother Denis is a bloodstock agent in Co Cork, runs his horses under the banner of Super Horse Inc. Stable. He has had horses with Robert Hess Jr, the late Bobby Frankel and Carl O’Callaghan in recent years, and he enjoyed his first stakes winner when the Frankel-trained The Exeter Man landed the El Conejo Handicap at Santa Anita in January, 1998. Leesider, trained by fellow Irish ex-pat Paddy Gallagher, also proved to a useful performer for the Sheehy operation, netting $150,000 when capturing the Snow Chief Stakes at Hollywood Park in April, 2007. Kinsale King provided Sheehy with his first Group/Grade One success when storming to a half-length victory in the Dubai Golden Shaheen on March 27.
Kieren Fallon
Born on February 22, 1965, in County Clare, Ireland, Kieren Fallon joined Kevin Prendergast as an apprentice in 1983. Piccadilly Lord at Navan on June 18, 1984, was his first winner. He moved from Ireland to Jimmy FitzGerald's Malton stable from 1989 until 1991 and spent three years with Lynda Ramsden from 1993 until the end of 1996. In 1997, Fallon was a surprise appointment as stable jockey to Henry Cecil and promptly won the 1000 Guineas on Sleepytime and the Oaks on Reams Of Verse. He ceased riding for Cecil in August, 1999, and was first jockey to Sir Michael Stoute in 2000 and 2001 after which he freelanced, still riding many for Stoute, before becoming retained rider to owners Michael Tabor, Sue Magnier and Derrick Smith in 2005. The Stoute/Fallon combination won the 2000 Guineas with the Saeed Suhail-owned King's Best in 2000 and Golan in 2001. Fallon was champion jockey in 1997 (202 wins), 1998 (204), 1999 (202), 2001 (166), 2002 (149) and in 2003 (221 wins), when his successes included Classics on Russian Rhythm in the 1000 Guineas and Kris Kin in the Derby. He won three British Classics in 1999 - the StanJames.com 1000 Guineas on Wince, the Oaks on Ramruma and the Derby on Oath, his first success in the premier Classic. Though second to Frankie Dettori in the 2004 championship, Fallon enjoyed an excellent season, including the Derby-Oaks double with North Light and Ouija Board. He made a great start at Ballydoyle in 2005, winning both the 2000 and 1000 Guineas respectively with Footstepsinthesand and Virginia Waters. He added his first Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on the Coolmore-owned and Andre Fabre-trained Hurricane Run, on whom he had previously won the Irish Derby. There was another success in the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas with George Washington in 2006 and added that season's Investec Oaks and Irish Oaks with Alexandrova. Out of the saddle, he has frequently made the headlines, in 2003 he was treated in a clinic in Ireland after admitting to a drink problem. In September, 2004, he was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud related to alleged race fixing but was released on bail and the prosecution case collapsed at the subsequent trial, with Fallon being found innocent on all charges. He had been suspended from riding in Britain up to the end of the trial but was able to ride in Ireland and other jurisdictions He collected a second Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe win aboard Dylan Thomas in 2007, his last big race victory before being banned for 18 months after failing a drugs test organised by France Galop, his second such offence. He received a six-month ban for the first drug offence in 2006/2007. He returned to action in September, 2009, and landed the Grade One Goodwood Handicap at Santa Anita, USA, on Gitano Hernando.
