ROYAL ASCOT 2010
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
SECOND DAY, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 16

ASCOT WATERING TONIGHT

After a sunny day at Royal Ascot that produced three track records, Ascot Clerk of the Course Chris Stickels is preparing to add a sprinkling of water overnight to maintain the surface.

He said: “The ground remains good to firm, good in places but all the time it continues to be sunny and blowy like it is now, the ground keeps drying.

“I will water tonight and intend to put six millimetres on the straight course and four millimetres on the round course.”

TODAY’S CROWD & TOTE

The crowd today, on the second day of Royal Ascot 2010, came to 36,481. This is down 1,830 (-4.7 per cent) on the corresponding day last year when 38,311 attended.

The racecourse is still expecting the total attendance for Royal Ascot this year to be up between 2 per cent and 3 per cent, with people migrating towards Friday and Saturday.

On-course totepool betting turnover today was up 1.6 per cent at £1,108,000 as against £1,090,000 last year.

FIRST RACE WIN QUOTES

Jersey Stakes (Group Three)

RECORD FOR RAINFALL

Rainfall overcame front-runner Red Jazz in a thrilling finish to the Jersey Stakes, to become the first filly in 19 years to land the seven-furlong prize.

Champion jockey Ryan Moore gave the Mark Johnston-trained filly a power-packed ride to score by a head in a new track record of 1m 24.94s.

The Oasis Dream three-year-old was having only her third start as she emulated the Sheikh Mohammed-owned Satin Flower, the last filly to score back in 1991.

Johnston, who trains Rainfall for that owner’s son, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, revealed: “Sheikh Mohammed said to me that it’s a good race for fillies and he himself has won it a few times.

“I looked at the race over the last five years and thought it was a bit of a tall order - I wasn’t confident that we could beat the favourite, Shakespearean.

“She came to us from Darley pre-training so I didn’t have her as a two-year-old. This has come pretty quick from a maiden win at Thirsk in May but she’s made good progress and is a straightforward filly.

“She had shown a bit at home and everyone thought quite a bit of her. She’s very laid back and saves her best for race day. If you look at her she has not quite come in her coat so hopefully there’s more to come.

“She has a few entries, mostly foreign entries that have been made in the past few weeks, but there are no long-term plans because she has burst onto the scene very quickly. We’ll have to sit down and talk to the owner.”

The success was a rare big-race victory for the Johnston/Moore combination but the champion was in fine form aboard the 8/1 shot.

Johnston continued: “Ryan is not available for big races usually - it’s just the way it fell. The champion jockey was available, Frankie (Dettori) was on Shakespearean and we didn’t have a jockey with a connection to the horse.

“Ryan was full of confidence before the race and he did his homework thoroughly as always. He gave her a great ride.

“It’s a relief to get off the mark. I said one of the worries was that we had no bankers for the Group races so it was wonderful to get off the mark in a Group race.

“It’s always surprising when you break track records but obviously on new tracks like Ascot, records will fall.”

FIRST RACE PLACED QUOTES
JERSEY STAKES (GROUP 3)

HILLS HAPPY WITH JAZZ

Red Jazz lost out by a head to Rainfall in the opening Jersey Stakes and trainer Barry Hills hopes to land a big prize this year before the Johannesburg colt heads out to Hong Kong.

“He drifted a bit to the right and the winner is an improving filly. It was a good performance and he’ll have his day,” said Hills. “Two months ago I didn’t see him as a mile horse but I wouldn’t be frightened of stepping up to that trip. I’ll run him in what I think is the best race for him.

“He’ll be going over to Hong Kong to race as a four-year-old when he is a year older as that is where his owner (Ronnie Arculli) is from.”

Third-placed Rock Jock also has an overseas target are running an excellent race at odds of 28/1.

“I’m delighted, his owner Mr (James) Long deserves the credit because I thought he was a six-furlong horse but he insisted we give her a go over seven. He travelled over very well and in good form but I don’t know where he will go now,” said trainer Tracey Collins.

Owner James Long, who races as Thistle Bloodstock, added: “His long-term target is the Golden Shaheen on Tapeta in Dubai next March. I live there so it makes sense and we’ll take him out for the winter and Tracey will keep training him.”

Frankie Dettori, rider of 3/1 favourite Shakespearean, who finished sixth, said: “He ran flat. I think it’s come too soon after his Epsom win.”

JERSEY STAKES

PRAISE FOR GROUND FROM FIRST-RACE JOCKEYS

Jockeys who rode in the opening race on day two of Royal Ascot praised the ground while confirming it was riding slightly quicker than on Tuesday.

Ryan Moore, who rode the winner Rainfall, breaking the seven-furlong track record in the process, said: “It’s fast ground, but with a tail wind.”

Frankie Dettori said: “Yes, it’s slightly quicker, but it’s lovely ground.”

Johnny Murtagh: “It’s a tad quicker.”

Jimmy Fortune said: “It’s a little bit quicker, but there’s no jar in it.”

Kevin Manning said: “It’s fast, absolutely lovely racing ground.”

Richard Hughes said: “It’s lovely ground.”

Steve Drowne said: “It’s fast, but there’s a nice cushion.”

Jean-Pierre Guillambert said: “It’s quick enough - I wouldn’t say there’s any jar in it, but it is fast.”

Michael Hills said: “It’s a bit quicker than yesterday, but the cover’s gorgeous and it’s as good a ground as you could ever ride on.”

Richard Hills said: “It’s fractionally quicker than yesterday, but not a lot.”

Tom Queally: “It’s slightly faster than yesterday.”

SECOND RACE QUOTES
WINDSOR FOREST STAKES

STRAWBERRYDAIQUIRI IS A FRUIT IN THE FOREST

Pulling hard and making all, Strawberrydaiquiri held Spacious by a short head in the Windsor Forest Stakes.

The winner was ridden by Ryan Moore and trained by Sir Michael Stoute for Renata Jacobs, whose late husband Klaus was a leading owner and founder of the Newsells Park Stud in Hertfordshire.

Mrs Jacobs said her husband was with her in spirit at Royal Ascot, adding: “I’m very happy, for while it is two years since my husband passed away today he is here, he is happy, he is smiling and he is watching. For me it is a fantastic moment.”

Trainer Sir Michael Stoute said: “I’m thrilled for the Jacobs family, but it’s so sad Klaus Jacobs is not here to see this business bear fruit for him - his family bought into Equiano [last week] who won the King’s Stand Stakes yesterday. He invested a hell of a lot in racing and Newsells Park Stud.”

Sir Michael praised his jockey, saying: “Ryan was very clever to do what he did, because we would have loved a lead - that’s how we’ve always ridden her - but he had to grab the initiative, especially with a tailwind. She’s a tough filly and we feared there wouldn’t be any pace and that she would be vulnerable over a mile. The next step is to go 10 furlongs.

Moore, who was completing a 48.5-1 double initiated on Rainfall in the Jersey Stakes, said: “She tries very hard and was very game at Newmarket [on her seasonal debut]. When I asked her she gave a little bit more, and she’ll be really nice when she goes up in distance.”

SECOND RACE PLACE QUOTES

Windsor Forest Stakes (Group Two)

GALLANT SPACIOUS DENIED IN THRILLER

Spacious was narrowly foiled in her bid for back-to-back wins in the Windsor Forest Stakes, going down by a short-head to Strawberrydaiquiri following a pulsating duel through the final furlong and a half of the mile contest.

The five-year-old Nayef mare, owned by Cheveley Park Stud, was a 13/2 chance under Johnny Murtagh.

Spacious’ trainer, James Fanshawe, was also responsible for fourth-placed Alsace Lorraine, a 10/1 shot ridden by Jamie Spencer.

Chris Richardson, managing director of Cheveley Park Stud, said: “Spacious ran very well. Johnny (Murtagh) gave her a great ride, he just wonders if he might have come there too soon. But she has got this wonderful stride that just keeps lengthening.

“Full marks to James (Fanshawe) and his team. It’s nice to keep this filly in training and come back here with her. She has shown that she has trained on and will go on to the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket again.”

Fanshawe commented: “I was a bit emotional five minutes ago but they have both run really well. Spacious is a credit to the yard and I thought that we might be getting the upper hand with half a furlong to go but Strawberrydaiquiri just got the upper hand in the last little bit.

“Alsace Lorraine ran a very good race. It was a big step in class and ideally she would have liked a bit more give in the ground, but she ran very well.”

The Saeed bin Suroor-trained Antara, sent off the 7/2 favourite, was three lengths third under Frankie.

Suroor reported: “She ran a big race, she ran really well. She was just beaten by better fillies on the day. I think she’s absolutely fine with this distance and we will give her a break now as she’s a really nice filly for the future.”

BUICK BANNED

The stewards enquired into possible interference in the Windsor Forest Stakes and found William Buick, rider of Golden Stream, guilty of careless riding and suspended him for one day on July 2.

THIRD RACE WINNING QUOTES
PRINCE OF WALES’S STAKES (GROUP 1)

GUYON STARS ON BYWORD

The 21-year-old French riding sensation Maxime Guyon starred on day two of Royal Ascot when - having his first ever ride in Britain - produced 5/2 favourite Byword to come with a perfectly-timed run to win the Group One Prince Of Wales’s Stakes.

The four-year-old beat Twice Over, who was also owned by Prince Khalid Abdulla, to score by half a length to the delight of trainer Andre Fabre.

“The horse had the ability to win the race but I was a bit worried about the inexperienced jockey.
He had a perfect ride - clear without any bumps, “ said Fabre. “The horse has matured this season and we always thought he was really good. He got a bit sick as a three-year-old and had a virus so we gave him time. He has strengthened and now is really coming into himself.

“He is a horse who could go for the big mile races and he won’t go further than a mile and a quarter. We will look at something like the Prix Jacques le Marois for him. We will discuss the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe with the Prince but I think that is only a remote possibility. There is a question mark with his stamina and he needs good ground as well. We have to run in Group Ones and I think it’s likely that he will go back to a mile.

“Maxime has nerves and he is young, which is always an advantage. He has been in fantastic form - he knows the horses well and he knows what they want. He also doesn’t use the whip a lot, which I enjoy as well.

“I was impressed with his ride, he rode a beautiful race. It’s a double celebration for me, not only because of the jockey but because the winner is by Peintre Celebre as well.

“It was a big worry about the jockey but he walked the course, saw some films and I gave him some phone calls but he’s very laid back and rode an ideal race.”

Guyon added: “It’s a great honour to be given the opportunity to ride here today for Mr Fabre. I never thought that I would get the chance to ride at Royal Ascot this afternoon and I cannot thank my trainer enough for trusting me.

“Everything went perfectly in the race and I had a great ride throughout the race - I am delighted.

“I was not too nervous before the race but I was obviously a little apprehensive riding here for the first time. I wasn’t given precise orders but was just told to get him in a good position which I managed and we had a good run.

“Monsieur Fabre did ring me and told me to walk the course and see a few other races because this is not a track like any other.”

Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to Abdulla, said: “It’s especially exciting because the first two were home-breds whose families go back several generations.

“Ascot is such an important venue for world racing and Prince Khalid likes to run his best horses in the best races. As for the future it might be difficult to split the first and second but we will look at the programme book.”

THIRD RACE QUOTES
PRINCE OF WALES’S STAKES

HENRY UNHAPPY AS TWICE OVER MISSES OUT

This year’s Prince of Wales’s Stakes was won by Byword, but the first two places might be reversed if the race was run twice over.

Five-year-old Twice Over was nearer last than first after two furlongs, took a while to quicken off the final bend and then made up ground without quite managing to haul in the winner. He was beaten half a length, and like the winner carried the colours of Prince Khalid Abdulla.

Trainer Henry Cecil looked understandably disappointed at the way the race unfolded for Twice Over, although he attached no blame to jockey Tom Queally. Cecil said of his horse: “He ran very well, but he couldn’t get out. He got locked in and too far back - he made a lot of ground up and ran super, but he didn’t get there.

“We wanted to be handier and it was such a mess-up because he couldn’t get the position he wanted and was taken back [when the runners bunched after a couple of furlongs]. I hope he’ll go back to the Champion Stakes, but it is up to the Prince.”

Teddy Grimthorpe, Prince Khalid’s racing manager, later said: “He didn’t get out when he wanted to and finished really well. He’s back on track. Henry’s done a great job given it was the horse’s first run since Dubai. He went for the Eclipse Stakes [at Sandown] last year and didn’t run that well behind Sea The Stars so although it’s different circumstances we’d have to take that into consideration.”

In contrast, John Gosden had no complaints about the result for third-placed Tazeez, a 40/1 outsider who made the running and was passed by just two horses. Gosden said: “He ran very well the other day at Sandown [when second in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes], and he’s probably improved 5lb on that. He’s run a blinder. He’s gone a good even gallop and only two horses have gone by him, and they were entitled to being the first and second favourite.”

Gosden is considering the Group Two Skybet Stakes at York next month, although he might step him up in trip to 12 furlongs, and said: “I put him in the Princess of Wales’s Stakes [at Newmarket’s July meeting] only yesterday.”

THIRD RACE QUOTES

Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (Group One)

WALZER PLEASES DE VRIES

Wiener Walzer was unable to stamp his mark on history and become the first German-trained horse to win at Royal Ascot but Jens Hirschberger’s charge took credit in finishing fifth, two and three quarter lengths behind Byword.

Last year’s Deutsches Derby victor raced prominently under Adrie de Vries in the slipstream of the pace-setting Tazeez.

The Dynaformer colt, owned by Gestut Schlenderhan, kept on well at the end of the 10-furlong contest without being able to match the finishing speed of the principals.

Belgian-born jockey Adrie de Vries, having his first Royal Ascot ride, said: “The race was fine for me, it all went well in that I was in a good position in second. When the pace increased he just kept going - he didn’t quicken.

“I think maybe he could do with an extra furlong or two but the ground was perfect - this is what he wants.”

FOURTH RACE WIN QUOTES

Royal Hunt Cup (Heritage Handicap)

INVISIBLE STRIKES FOR GODOLPHIN

Invisible Man proved a revelation in first time blinkers as he gave Godolphin its first success in the Royal Hunt Cup and broke the track with a scorching time of 1m 37.16s for the straight mile.

The four-year-old benefited from a cool Frankie Dettori ride to take the spoils by half a length from Riggins at odds of 28/1.

Dettori revealed: “I took a chance. I dropped him out, got him relaxed and, when I looked up with two furlongs to go, I had half of the field to pass. But he has whizzed his way through and got there in the end. He didn’t even realise that he had got there but you have to ride him that way and we got lucky that all of the gaps appeared when we needed them.

“It’s nice to have a winner at Royal Ascot - it takes the pressure off. We still have three days to go and hopefully we will have another couple of successes.

“We have only had 10 races but you want to get on the board as quickly as you can. I felt a lot of pressure but it’s great that I am on the board now.”

Sheikh Mohammed, Godolphin’s founder and driving force, said: “It’s very good to have a winner here. It’s a beautiful day and Ascot always has great racing.

“There was always a chance that he would win because we put the blinkers on and that just dropped him into the race.”

Trainer Saeed bin Suroor stated: “What I like about this horse is that he is a big strong horse who handles his races well and we can look at bigger races now.”

Simon Crisford, Godolphin’s racing manager, commented: “He’s been disappointing in his last two starts and we felt he wasn’t doing all he could so the decision was taken to fit the blinkers today.

“He was fancied for the Cambridgeshire so the ability was there, it was just a question of finding it. It was a combination of the blinkers and a fantastic ride from Frankie. He was on an outsider and so nobody was under any pressure. Frankie blocked him in, dropped him out, gave him every chance, let the horse enjoy himself and came home well.

“It’s nice for Godolphin to be in the winner’s enclosure and winning the Royal Hunt Cup for the first time is fantastic. This is an important race with a long history.”

FOURTH RACE QUOTES
ROYAL HUNT CUP

RIGGINS RUN BRINGS A SMILE TO HAPPY OWNERS

A group of owners known as Dubai Thoroughbred Racing went shopping in October and came back with a Royal Hunt Cup runner-up.

Bidding through bloodstock agent Alastair Donald at Tattersalls’ Horses-in-Training Sal, they paid 18,000gns for Riggins and then sent him to trainer Andrew Balding. A gelding operation was carried out, and today Riggins more or less won his purchase price back in one dash along Ascot’s straight mile.

Balding said: “I’m very pleased with that, and while I didn’t train him last year so couldn’t be sure, gelding hasn’t done him any harm.

“He likes to be held up in his races and did everything right today, but he was beaten by a better handicapped horse. It’s great for this group of owners, and we might take them all to [Glorious] Goodwood and run him in the totesport Mile.”

Mark Johnston, trainer of third-placed St Moritz, said: “It’s a great effort considering he was up there all the way. He [jockey Joe Fanning] said he would have been happier if he hadn’t been taken on so much early on. He was racing from a long way out, and while I thought for a moment he would take it when he began to pull away from the pack, two caught him.

“He’s had so many problems in his life that it’s a challenge just to be here. You couldn’t say he didn’t get the mile on this evidence, and while you wonder whether seven or seven and a half furlongs are best, when you’re placed in the Royal Hunt Cup you can’t be disappointed.”

FIFTH RACE QUOTES
QUEEN MARY STAKES

MAQAASID BREAKS TRACK RECORD ON BREEZY DAY

A third track record was broken on day two of Royal Ascot when Maqaasid won the Queen Mary Stakes for juvenile fillies.

Her time of 59.17 seconds impressed trainer John Gosden, who said: “People who follow times will know that’s extremely fast - we have got a bit of a tail wind, but that’s quick.

“The plan is to go for six furlongs later in the year, but we don’t want to over-race her in the hope she might get a mile next year.

“She’s very relaxed, but as soon as she daylight she goes. She didn’t have to be taught that, she does it on auto-pilot. I’d hate to see her breaking head and head for the lead because she’d get four and a half furlongs and not the final eighth.

“She’s naturally athletic, so given that she’s by Green Desert out of a Storm Cat mare my job was to keep her mentally settled. My assistant, Danny Harrop, rides her at home and he’s pretty good at getting them settled. You go with her, you don’t tell her what to do.

“The Cheveley Park Stakes would be a good aim. This is a stiff five furlongs and she’s done that well, but six furlongs will suit. She’s got scope about her.”

Asked how today’s race fitted into his big-race record, Gosden said: “Yesterday’s Coventry Stakes is the race you want to win with a two-year-old colt, and this is the race for a fast filly. If you have one the Queen Mary is all you talk about through the winter. I’ve been second in this race and it’s great to win it - it’s amazing what you can achieve if you live long enough.”

FIFTH RACE PLACED QUOTES
QUEEN MARY STAKES (GROUP 2)

MEOW BEATEN BY A WHISKER

The blue-blooded Meow, a daughter of the great sprinter Airwave from Storm Cat’s last crop, was beaten by a neck in the Group Two Queen Mary Stakes.

“She’d win the Queen Mary in most years but unfortunately not this one,” said the filly’s trainer David Wachman. “She ran very well and we’ve no excuses. She’ll probably try and win a Listed race and then step up to good company again. She’s a five-furlong filly.”

Trainer Geoff Oldroyd was delighted with Ladies Are Forever’s third place. “I thought she was going to win but she ran a fabulous race because she wanted more give in the ground,” said the Malton handler. “Tom (Eaves) thought she was going to win but she just started to hang.

“I think she’s going to make up into a really nice filly and the plan is still to go for the Lowther Stakes at York. She was a late foal (born on May 8) so she was only really two last month and has to catch up with some of these other fillies.

“She’s still quite unfurnished so I’d like to give her a bit of a break and then go straight to the Lowther.

“I think she also gets into the Redcar Two-Year-Old Trophy on about 7st 12lb and that could be a good target as it’s worth a lot of money and it’s in October so it gives her a good break between races.

“Her owner-breeder (Reg Bond) is trying to promote the stallion Monsieur Bond this year and he has really taken off.”

SIXTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
SANDRINGHAM HANDICAP (LISTED)

TIMEPIECE IS POPULAR FINALE WINNER

Royal Ascot’s most-successful trainer Henry Cecil added to his already outstanding record at the meeting when Timepiece bounced back from a couple of disappointing run when winning the concluding Sandringham Handicap under Tom Queally.

It was Cecil’s 72nd winner at the Royal Meeting since his first success in 1970 and the trainer was thrilled to get on the scoresheet this year.

“We were coming back from a mile and a half to a mile and she doesn’t seem to have a distance. She works very well and always look like she stays and we decided to try a stiff mile to tell us what to do in the future. I think she’ll get a mile and a quarter so we’ll just have to see what we do.

She did hang and he (Queally) had to change hands,” said Cecil.

“The crowd here are lovely and always very good to me. It was always my ambition to get to 100 winners here which I might have done if I hadn’t had 10 years in the doldrums but I don’t think God will let me do that now.

“I’ve got one or two important ones coming up including Manifest in the Gold Cup tomorrow.

“He wouldn’t want any jar in the ground because he got a bit jarred up at York and took a bit of time to get over it. The Prince (Khalid Abdulla) has never won the Gold Cup and maybe this is the horse to change that.

“He has to stay the distance but I feel he will and he would also like a bit of give in the ground.”

Queally added: “She dug deep but she tired and then just started to hang. But I wouldn’t take no for an answer because I know she has loads of ability. I’m delighted she’s finally realised her potential and done in the afternoon what we’d seen in the mornings. It’s very special to win here for Henry Cecil.”

SIXTH RACE QUOTES
SANDRINGHAM HANDICAP

BLUE MAIDEN HEADS FOR THE STATES

Several fillies who have contested this season’s early Classics lined up in the Sandringham Handicap, and while Oaks also-ran Timepiece proved best, Blue Maiden ran a blinder to take second.

Unplaced in both the English and Irish 1,000 Guineas, Blue Maiden rediscovered top form in today’s race, and although beaten one and a quarter lengths by the winner, she was two and three-quarters of a length ahead of third-placed Sarafina.

Newmarket trainer Charlie McBride was delighted with Blue Maiden, although he said she would now leave his care and head to the United States to continue racing in the colours of Earle Mack, a former US ambassador to Finland.

McBride said: “We’re delighted with the run. Her owner bought her to race in America and she’ll go there now. He paid good money for her so she has to go, but I’m pleased he bought her and she’s given us all a good run today.

“She’s been unlucky this season - in the Irish Guineas her saddle slipped and she was virtually pulled up, and at Newmarket she was drawn on the far side and had no chance. Other than that she’s been extremely easy and a joy to have. I wish her all the best and hope she wins loads of races in the United States.”

Fiona Shaw, racing manager to Mack, said: “She’ll be competing in all the big fillies’ and mares’ races over there, but no trainer has been announced yet. I think she’ll do well there because she’s tough.”

BETTING NEWS

As on Tuesday, there has been a steady spread of money this morning for a variety of runners with the Royal Hunt Cup (4.25pm) as ever proving a hugely popular betting heat.

Riggins has been the day’s best backed horse with Coral, shortening from 16/1 to 11/1, while others supported in the mile handicap include Please Sing, who is 33/1 from 40/1 with Paddy Power. Fareer has been trimmed to 11/1 from 14/1 with totesport while Marajaa, who is 20/1 from 25/1 with Coral. Favourite Dandy Boy is 8/1 from 10/1 with William Hill and 7/1 from 8/1 with Boylesports.

Victor Chandler have also shortened Lovelace from 20/1 to 16/1, French raider Tryst from 16/1 to 12/1 and Harald Bluetooth into 22/1 from 40/1.

In the opening Jersey Stakes (2.30pm), Meezaan is 11/2 from 6/1 with both Paddy Power and Victor Chandler and 11/2 from 13/2 with William Hill, while Coral have shortened Rock Jock from 33/1 to 25/1. Quarrel is 12/1 from 14/1 with Victor Chandler while Rainfall is 8/1 from 9/1.

Shamwari Lodge is 11/2 from 13/2 with totesport and 11/2 from 6/1 with Boylesports in the Windsor Forest Stakes (3.05pm) and the latter firm have pruned Spacious from 7/1 to 13/2.

Pricewise’s selection Glass Harmonium is 11/1 from 14/1 with Coral in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (3.50pm) and 12/1 from 14/1 with both William Hill and Paddy Power. Presvis is 8/1 from 10/1 with totesport in the same race.

In the Queen Mary Stakes (5.00pm), Swiss Dream is 10/1 from 11/1 with Paddy Power and 9/1 from 12/1 with both Victor Chandler and William Hill. Favourite Maqaasid has been trimmed from 7/2 to 100/30 with William Hill, who have also cut Ladies Are Forever from 16/1 to 14/1.

Paddy Power have cut Song Of My Heart from 20/1 to 16/1 in the concluding Sandringham Handicap (5.35pm), in which Safina is 7/2 from 9/2 with William Hill and 4/1 from 5/1 with Victor Chandler. The latter company have also seen support for Mudaaraah, who is 11/1 from 14/1, and Miss Mittagong, who is now 28/1 from 40/1.

KELLEWAY REACHES FOR ASCOT LANDMARK AS ENGLAND HOPES FOR HUNT CUP OMEN

Gay Kelleway is hoping to make Royal Ascot history today as she bids to become the first woman to sample victory at the meeting as both a jockey and a trainer.

Kelleway partnered Sprowston Boy to win the Queen Alexandra Stakes in 1987 and the Newmarket handler saddles the aptly-named York Listed winner Primo Lady in today’s Group Two Queen Mary Stakes (5pm).

The day’s feature event, the Group One Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (3.50pm) could see another notable first as last year’s Deutsches Derby hero Wiener Walzer, from Jens Hirschberger’s stable, bids to break the duck for German-trained horses at the Royal Meeting.

In the same contest, Glass Harmonium lines up in the well-known silks of the Weinstock family’s Ballymacoll Stud. It is exactly 30 years since the same colours last triumphed in the Prince Of Wales’ Stakes, when Ela-Mana-Mou prevailed under Willie Carson for the late Lord Weinstock.

In the opener, the Group Three Jersey Stakes, owner Hamdan Al Maktoum is seeking a hat-trick, having savoured his famous blue and white silks being carried to victory in 2008 and 2009 aboard Aqlaam and Ouqba, respectively. The Sheikh relies on the John Gosden-trained Meezaan this time.

England lifted the World Cup not long after Continuation won the 1966 Royal Hunt Cup (4.25pm) and no Irish-trained horse has triumphed since then. It could be a good omen for England fans if either King Jock or Dandy Boy lands the mile handicap for Ireland this afternoon.

France-based Englishman John Hammond has two Royal Ascot wins on his record and is bidding for a third with Tryst, who would become the first French-trained winner of the Royal Hunt Cup.

Looking ahead to tomorrow’s Group One Gold Cup (3.50pm), Sir Michael Stoute is set to saddle Ask in a bid to end a drought dating back to 1978 when Shangamuzo gave him his only success in the race.

Should the Roger Charlton-trained Clowance take her place in the field, she would be attempting to become the first filly or mare to triumph since Indian Queen in 1991.

QUEST FOR COMPENSATION IN CORONATION STAKES

A Classic slipped from her grasp, but a coronation awaits Jacqueline Quest at Royal Ascot on Friday.

The Henry Cecil-trained filly is among 13 declared for the £250,000 Coronation Stakes (3.50), and while her disqualification from the StanJames.com 1000 Guineas dashed the elation briefly held by owner Noel Martin, victory at the Royal meeting would fill the void with gold.

There’s a substantial sum for the winner of Friday’s mile contest, and unknown riches to be gained when she retires from racing and produces her own foals - a Royal Ascot win by mum would make them highly valuable.

Jacqueline Quest’s crime at Newmarket was to lean on rival Special Duty during the sinew-extending drive for the line, but the Coronation Stakes looks no easier.

Gile Na Greine, Sent From Heaven and Music Show, respectively third, fourth and sixth in the Guineas, are set to renew rivalry, and five fillies are heading to Ascot having tackled the Irish 1000 Guineas. Anna Salai (second), Music Show (third), Lillie Langtry (fifth), Famous (13th) and Gile Na Greine (17th) ran at the Curragh, and there are Guineas clues from two other European countries.

French challenger Evading Tempete won Italy’s Guineas, the Premio Regina Elena, while Lady Of The Desert finished a close fifth in the Poule d’Essai Des Pouliches, France’s equivalent contest - all these Classic runners give Friday’s race the hallmark of quality for which it is renowned.

Not that the potential winner is confined to this group, for Tabassum has not been to the track this season after earning an excellent end-of-term report last year. Impressive winner of Newmarket’s Group Three Oh So Sharp Stakes, Tabassum was then third to Music Show in the Group Two Rockfel Stakes. Her place in the line-up adds an additional puzzler, for there is no knowing whether she has retained her dazzle from last year - the fact she is trained by Sir Michael Stoute answers about 95% of the question.

Puff, another smart two-year-old whose victory in Newbury’s Group Three Dubai Duty Free Stakes last month proved she is as good as ever, represents trainer Ralph Beckett, who is based at Whitsbury in Hampshire.

Beckett is one of racing’s smart young trainers whose record needs a Royal Ascot winner to underline his ability. Puff could provide Beckett with his first success at the meeting, while Jacqueline Quest and her stablemate Chachamaidee (a winner at York last month) could become Cecil’s 72nd - such statistics add a dusting of intrigue to a fascinating fillies’ showdown.
