INVESTEC DERBY DAY
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
EPSOM DOWNS, SATURDAY, JUNE 6, 2009
BLOFELD DELIGHTED WITH ATTENDANCE ON INVESTEC DERBY DAY
The paying crowd today, Investec Derby Day, came to 39,000 - 2,000 more than in 2008.
There were fewer racegoers than usual on The Hill, mainly down to the wet weather, although there was an increase in the number of cars and buses on course as people sought some protection from the elements.
The new Duchess Stand played host to 10,000 racegoers.
Today’s total crowd, including The Hill (which does not have any admission charges) is estimated at 110,000.
Nick Blofeld, Managing Director at Epsom Downs, commented: “We are delighted to have seen an increase in the paying crowd on Investec Derby Day and the new Duchess Stand has proved a great success.
“Today has provided us with a fabulous performance that will live long in the memory and all at Epsom Downs extend their congratulations to everyone connected with Sea The Stars.
“I would once again like to thank our sponsor Investec for their generous support of the Derby Festival - we have enjoyed two days of wonderful racing.”
Race 5 - Investec Derby - Initial Winning Quotes
OXX HAILS SEA THE STARS
Trainer John Oxx hailed the superb performance of Sea The Stars, the imperious winner of the 2009 Investec Derby.
The handler, winning the Classic for a second time following Sinndar in 2000, said: “The horse has everything. He is so intelligent, even when we were breaking him in as a yearling, he did everything right.
“Some horses look good but let themselves down but this horse has it all - he is at the top of the ladder.
“I was not very anxious watching the race. He was always going so well and in a lovely position. He cruised all the way round and I knew he wouldn’t stop when he hit the front. He just idled a bit near the end but he does that even at home.”
Sea The Stars was becoming the first horse since Nashwan in 1989 to complete the 2000 Guineas/Derby double and is therefore in line for a crack at the Triple Crown, if he were to line up in the St Leger at Doncaster. The last Triple Crown winner was Nijinsky in 1970.
Looking ahead to the future, Oxx continued: “The horse could mix it at any distance.
“I am a believer in the Triple Crown and believe it may be won in the next 10 years but I think it might be a step too far for this horse - it was debatable whether he would stay today.
“We will have to have a talk about it but I would think races like the International at York and the Irish Champion Stakes could be on the agenda.”
The Investec Derby - winner’s quotes
SEA THE STARS IS FIRST HORSE TO COMPLETE DERBY-GUINEAS DOUBLE IN TWENTY YEARS
Sea The Stars became the first horse since Nashwan in 1989 to land the Investec Derby after winning the 2,000 Guineas. The morning favourite was superceded in the betting just before the off by Fame And Glory, who was sent off 9/4 favourite and finished second, but in the closing stages, Sea The Stars gave his supporters little cause for worry as he struck the front with two furlongs to run and ran home strongly to win by a length and three-quarters.
His victory gave trainer John Oxx his second Derby win following Sinndar’s triumph in 2000 while jockey Mick Kinane was notching his third success in the race, having also won on Commander In Chief in 1993 and on Sea The Stars’ half-brother Galileo in 2001.
Oxx said: “He was a beautiful yearling and I went to see him before he came to me. He just had everything and he did everything right from the word go. He’s never let us down all the way up. Some horses look good and then let you down but he never has - he’s taken us to the very top of the ladder.
“Actually I wasn’t very anxious at any time during the race because it was going so well. He cruised down the hill and I could see Mick was waiting and when he sent him on he wouldn’t stop - he’d been going too well for too long.
“He could win any Group One at a mile - a mile and a quarter is probably his best trip. I think the St Leger might be a bridge too far. I’m a believer in the Triple Crown and I think within the next ten years we will probably see a Triple Crown winner as there are some really good middle-distance stallions around now but I don’t know, we were worried going into the Derby so I don’t know about the Leger. We’ll have to talk about it but I doubt it, it would be a step too far. He could go for the Irish Derby or the Eclipse - he’s got plenty of speed.”
He continued: “From a long way out I could see he was running well and it was a very stress-free race. Plan A worked out for us as we had no anxious moments and he got the trip well enough.
“Mick doesn’t say much, it’s hard to get information from him, but we knew he had a really good feeling about this fella. He was the Guineas winner and we hoped he’d end up being one of the greats and he’s delivered.”
Mick Kinane, who is just a few weeks shy of his 50th birthday, was having his 21st ride in the Investec Derby, having first partnered Carlingford Castle to the runner-up slot in 1983. He said: “He was just finding it all so easy - he has that serious pace. He has so much class and that carries him through.”

Sea The Stars
A half-brother to 2001 Investec Derby winner Galileo and the Oaks-placed duo All Too Beautiful and Melikah, Sea The Stars was bred by the Hong Kong-based Tsui Family's Sunderland Holdings. Sea The Stars' dam Urban Sea, who died in March, cost David Tsui 280,000 francs as a yearling and won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 1993. She has subsequently become one of the most successful broodmares of the modern era with eight black type winners to her name. Sea The Stars - who races for David Tsui's son Christopher - ran fourth on his debut in a seven-furlong maiden at the Curragh in July before winning next time out in softer conditions at Leopardstown the following month. His final juvenile start came in the Group Two Beresford Stakes back at the Curragh at the end of September in which he beat stablemate Mourayan. He made his seasonal debut in the Group One 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 2 and recorded a hugely impressive success. Held up by Michael Kinane, the son of Cape Cross came with a smooth run up the inside to deny Delegator by a length and a half in the mile Newmarket Classic. He won the Investec Derby in fabulous style today.

Christopher Tsui
Chris Tsui, whose father David raced Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Urban Sea, is involved in business in his native Hong Kong. The 27-year-old runs the trendy Miusik nightclub although he has taken an interest in racing from a young age. "I was bitten by the racing bug quite early, and started attending the races in France as a 10-year-old. We had our horses with Jean Lesbordes and I enjoyed attending the stables as well," he said in a recent interview with the South China Morning Post. "Breeding and racing thoroughbreds in Europe is a passion for most of us in the family. My mother (Ling) is probably the most passionate about it. She loves the horses, studies pedigrees and breeding patterns. She does all the research that has led to our success. My sister Christine is involved too, but not quite as much." The family's long-term bloodstock advisor Brian Grassick died earlier this year and their breeding interests are now overseen by John Clarke, manager of the Irish National Stud, where their mares are based. Urban Sea has proved one of the best broodmares of recent years, producing the black-type performers Galileo, Black Sam Bellamy, My Typhoon, Melikah, All Too Beautiful, Urban Ocean and Cherry Hinton as well as Sea The Stars. Ling Tsui decided to use Sea The Stars' sire Cape Cross because he was also responsible for Oaks heroine Ouija Board of whom she was a great admirer. Investec Derby Record: 2009 SEA THE STARS (WON)
John Oxx IRE
Born July 14, 1950, John Oxx has built up an outstanding training record since saddling his first winner - Orchestra - at Phoenix Park on March 31, 1979. In 1978 he had taken over the licence upon the retirement of his eight-time Classic-winning father - also John - and is now the principal Irish trainer to the Aga Khan while other major owners include Lady O'Reilly and Lady Clague. Oxx has a particularly good record with fillies, headed by the great Ridgewood Pearl, whose victories in 1995 included the Irish 1,000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes, Prix du Moulin and culminated in the Breeders' Cup Mile at Belmont Park. He has also enjoyed Classic success in the Irish Oaks (1997 Ebadiyla and 1998 Winona) and Irish St Leger (1987 Eurobird, 1989 Petite Ile and 2006 Kastoria). However, Oxx enjoyed his greatest successes with Sinndar, who in 2000 became the first horse to win the Investec Derby, Irish Derby and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in the same season. He has also trained seven winners at Royal Ascot and won the Irish Derby again in 2003 with Alamshar, who went on to land the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. He won the King George in 2005 with Azamour, who also won the St James's Palace Stakes and Prince Of Wales's Stakes. This season began on a bright note with the victory of Sea The Stars in the 2000 Guineas. Oxx, who is married to Catriona and has three children, was chairman of the Irish National Stud from 1985 to 1990 and held the same position with the Irish Racehorse Trainers Association from 1986 to 1991 and from 1993 to 1996. He has also served on the committees of the Irish Equine Centre Board, Irish Horseracing Authority, Punchestown and Mallow racecourses and RACE. He has been chairman of Leopardstown racecourse since 2007. Oxx won his second Investec Derby today with Sea The Stars from just three runners.

Michael Kinane
Born in Co Tipperary on June 22, 1959, Michael Kinane rode his first winner on March 19, 1975, at Leopardstown on Muscari and served his apprenticeship with Liam Browne. He was champion Irish apprentice in 1978 and has been Irish champion jockey 13 times, most recently in 2003 with 104 successes. He was first jockey to Dermot Weld from 1984 until 1998 and was retained by Aidan O'Brien from 1999 until the end of 2003, when he joined John Oxx's stable. Kinane, who used to regularly spend his winters riding in Hong Kong, boasts success in many of top races around the world in a glittering career. He has won all the British Classics bar the 1000 Guineas and his wins include the Investec Derby three times, on Commander In Chief in 1993, the O'Brien-trained Galileo in 2001 and on the John Oxx-trained Sea The Stars in 2009, the Investec Oaks in 1998 on Shahtoush and in 2001 on Imagine and the stanjames.com 2000 Guineas with Tirol (1990), Entrepreneur (1997), King Of Kings (1998) and Sea The Stars (2009). He won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 1989 on Carroll House and in 1999 on Montjeu, the 1993 Melbourne Cup on Vintage Crop, the 1990 Belmont Stakes on Go And Go and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes five times (1990 Belmez, 1994 King's Theatre, 2000 Montjeu, 2001 Galileo, 2005 Azamour). He landed the Breeders' Cup Turf in 2002 and 2003 (dead-heating) on High Chaparral. Kinane has a small broodmare band at his Curragh home and co-bred the 2007 Investec Derby hero Authorized. MICK KINANE - WINNING JOCKEY
Mick Kinane rode his third winner of the Investec Derby on Sea The Stars today at Epsom Downs.
The jockey, who celebrates his 50th birthday on June 22, said: “He is so quick - he has a very high cruising gear.
“He has improved enormously from Newmarket (where he won the first colts’ Classic - the stanjames.com 2000 Guineas over a mile). We had to chase him really hard to get to Newmarket and only a horse of his constitution would have taken what we threw at him.
“But since then it has been a coast in his work and John (Oxx) has done a fantastic job with him.
“Sea The Stars has improved physically and fitness-wise. He just hit the gates and is so quick that I thought I would just have to sit behind the leader at one stage.
“He over-raced a bit through the race as they were not going quick enough for him. I was happy with where I was in the race as I was ideally placed behind the leader.
“I knew I wasn’t going to get any dead wood coming back on me. I was able to ride my horse to get there from the furlong-marker. I was never in any doubt - I didn’t think anything could beat me for pace from there.
“Sea The Stars was just going so easily all the way - almost too good - it was like he was in slow motion. He has serious cruising ability over any distance.
“When he came along last May, it put a few years back on me!
“I am running out of chances from now on (for more Derby success) and, as I have said, when this horse came along I could not believe my luck. Bred how he was, he had the physique and the attitude to be a great horse. He has given me a new lease of life and it is a pleasure to be on him.”

QUOTES FROM SEA THE STARS’ CONNECTIONS - JOHN OXX
Trainer John Oxx said: “He’s a terrific horse to have about the place, he has such a constitution and every day is the same for him. He’s a big masculine horse and he’s the boss at home, he thinks he owns the place. But the responsibility for training a horse like him is countered by the pleasure of looking at him about the place.
“You’d worry about any Guineas winner staying a mile and a half so the distance had to be a concern going into today’s race. It’s hard to know if he was going to get the genes from his sire or dam.
“Michael (Kinane) doesn’t make any big comments, it’s sometimes hard to prise information out of him, but I think he had plenty of confidence.
“We’ll look at the Irish Derby but he has to have good fast ground and in Ireland it doesn’t seemed to have stopped raining for two and a half years!
The Eclipse the following Saturday would be another option and the weather might be a problem looking further ahead to the Arc.
“I think the 10-furlong races such as the Eclipse, International and Irish Champion Stakes would be obvious targets.
“The Triple Crown would be a nice dream and I’m a great believer in it. I think it might be won in the near future because most of the expensive yearlings being bought are by the likes of Galileo, Montjeu and Dalakhani.
“One of these will come along as a Triple Crown contender, the question will be whether they go for the Guineas before the Derby and St Leger.
“We thought long and hard about whether he’d get the Derby trip and if I said to Michael we were thinking about running in the St Leger I think he’d be worried!”

QUOTES FROM SEA THE STARS’ CONNECTIONS - MICK KINANE AND CHRISTOPHER TSUI
Mick Kinane said: “We chased him hard to get to Newmarket and only a horse of his constitution would have been able to do what he did in the Guineas. Since then it’s been a coast really, he’s blossomed since.
“They weren’t going quick enough for him today. I was happy with where I was because I knew Colm and Pat’s horses were nice and would stay out there, I wasn’t going to get any dead wood falling back on me where I was.
“I didn’t want him getting away from me so took him to a position where I was comfortable, I was as close to the pace as I wanted to be and wasn’t too worried what was happening behind me.
“I just hoped that the invisible man wasn’t waiting after two furlongs out and we’d hit a (stamina) brick wall.
“I thought they would go a shade quicker but I don’t think they were able to. Sea The Stars is rather unusual, they just didn’t go fast enough for him.
“It’s special when you ride something like this and Plan A+ comes into play. It doesn’t happen very often, the last time was with Galileo here.
“I’m probably running out of chances these days but when this horse came along last May I couldn’t believe my luck - he gave me a new lease of life. I wondered what the horse was and when John told me he was a half-brother to Galileo I thought he was winding me up, I didn’t know how he had made his way to the yard!
“My fitness level is pretty good, it has to be to keep up with these young fellows and I can still run if I’m chased.
“Looking at the Triple Crown, enhancing the horse’s value as a stallion is a huge thing and do you want to venture into a mile and six furlongs? We must do the right thing for the horse.”
Owner Christopher Tsui added: “I arrived from Hong Kong yesterday and I’m overwhelmed by it all and don’t really know what to say. I’m only 27 and run a nightclub in Hong Kong, but that’s just for fun. I started going racing when I was very young, at the age of 10 or 11, in France with my trainer Mr (Jean) Lesbordes and he is here today.
“My mother (Ling) makes all the decisions. Through the years she’s made a lot of decisions on matings and she has become a bit of an expert.”

EVERYTHING BUT THE PRIZE FOR O’BRIEN
Aidan O’Brien wrote a new page in the record book, when he saddled four of the first five home in the Investec Derby. Unfortunately, the only place missing from the sequence was first.
The O’Brien placings were:
2nd Fame And Glory; 3rd Masterofthehorse; 4th Rip Van Winkle;
5th Golden Sword; 7th Age of Aquarius; 10th Black Bear Island
After debriefing his six jockeys, a clearly disappointed O’Brien searched carefully for his words. “It was a great race to watch and my horses all ran well. We’ll have to look at the race and see what we can find out,” he said.
The trainer maintained that there was no special stable fancy before the race, “They all came through their trials,” and he did not pick out any particular performance in the race, except that of the winner. “Oh sure, that’s a good horse. He won very well, didn’t he?” said O’Brien.
To make a bad day worse, the Stewards fined O’Brien £840 (6 x £140) for his horses being late into the parade ring. The trainer saddled his horses in the racecourse stables and they were late into the parade ring. The Investec Derby was seven minutes late starting.
The stewards took a dim view and reminded the trainer that the race had a worldwide audience. The trainer apologised.
INITIAL JOCKEYS’ QUOTES ON THE INVESTEC DERBY
Seamus Heffernan, rider of the second placed beaten 9/4 favourite Fame And Glory, said: “I stayed going well but he quickened (Sea The Stars) and I didn’t.”
Richard Hughes, rider of the third Masterofthehorse, said: “He ran a great race and I’m very pleased with him.”
Johnny Murtagh, rider of fourth Rip Van Winkle, said: “He ran very well.”
Jamie Spencer, rider of sixth Crowded House, said: “We were just looking for a positive race from the horse and that is what we got.”
Jimmy Fortune, rider of eighth Debussy, said: “He ran a blinder, probably the best run of his life.”
Ryan Moore, jockey of 10th Black Bear Island, said: “They let the front two go and we were just too steady in behind.”
Richard Hills, rider of last placed Montaff, said: “I was beaten very quickly.”
UNPLACED HORSES - REACTION
Kevin Manning, rider of Gan Amhras (11th): “He was never comfortable on the track - he just didn’t act on it at all.”
Saeed bin Suroor, trainer of Kite Wood (9th): “We were disappointed with the result. I just think he was not good enough today but we will keep him to a mile and a half. There are no plans.”
Jamie Spencer, rider of Crowded House (6th): “He ran very well. Everything was great for him until I asked him for his effort and we hit Johnny (Murtagh) up the backside. He probably didn’t totally handle the track but it’s only 23 days since the bubble burst with him and we are back on track now. I am very pleased with the horse.”
Jim Bolger, trainer of Gan Amhras (11th): “The winner is a very nice horse and well done to John. Our fellow probably didn’t handle the track.”
Brian Meehan, trainer of Crowded House (6th): “We were very pleased with him. He missed seven days work after the Dante and he got a little bit tired at the end today. He’ll go for the Eclipse now.”
BOOKIES SEE STARS AFTER DERBY
The bookmakers were left reeling after Sea The Stars became the first horse since Nashwan to complete the 2000 Guineas/Derby double after romping home to victory in the Investec Derby at Epsom on Saturday afternoon.
The John Oxx-trained colt was the subject of a serious gamble on the morning of the race with totesport and had been supported at all rates down into 11/4 from 10/3. Although Fame And Glory eventually went off favourite, Sea The Stars was a poor result for the layers after strong support in the ante-post market as well.
“Although John Oxx had reservations about the trip for Sea The Stars, this didn’t stop punters putting their faith in him and his victory has ruined what had been a cracking meeting for the layers up to that point,” said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.
Aidan O’Brien saddled the second, third, fourth and fifth horses home which was also bad news for the bookies as both Fame And Glory and Masterofthehorse had been well supported in the each-way market.
Race 1 - Investec Sir Clement Freud Memorial Heritage Handicap - Initial Winning Quotes
RIVER RUNS AWAY WITH OPENER
River Captain turned the Investec Sir Clement Freud Memorial Heritage Handicap - the opener on Investec Derby Day 2009 - into something of a procession when scoring by five lengths.
Eddie Ahern, the winning jockey on the 16/1 chance, said: “I was not surprised by the way he won as Sylvester Kirk was delighted with the draw (1) today.
“Sylvester told me to be in the van and kick on in the home straight. The horse has won at Epsom before and loves it around here.
“The pace was slow and I was able to get in behind Frannie Norton who le hd me into the straight and my horse has picked up really well.
“I would say it’s good ground out there today and a bit loose on top. My fellow loved it.
“It was a great atmosphere going down to the start with the big crowd on Derby Day. But it was even better coming back!”

RIVER CAPTAIN CRUISES TO VICTORY
Sylvester Kirk, trainer of River Captain, was nonplussed by the performance of his horse River Captain at Newbury in May, when he could only finish sixth behind Aqwaa over 10 furlongs.
“I always thought that he was a three-year-old who wanted those extra two furlongs, but he disappointed me at Newbury. He just didn’t travel there. I was worried about that otherwise I would have been very keen on him today,” said the trainer.
River Captain consequently started at 16/1 for the Investec Sir Clement Freud Memorial Handicap, but won by a clear five lengths from the front-running Tepmokea.
“He travelled like a dream here. She loves this place,” said Kirk, who now plans, if possible, to go to Royal Ascot with the three-year-old.
“I might go for the Britannia. He’s rated 83 and with a six-pound penalty he might just get into that,” said the trainer.
“Do you think, he’ll get more than six if he is re-handicapped?” he said. Heads nodded.

First race - runner-up quotes
TEPMOKEA HAS TO SETTLE FOR SECOND AGAIN
Tepmokea, a winner on his last start at two, had to settle for the runner-up slot for the third time this season but posted a performance to please his trainer Karl Burke.
The Yorkshire-based handler said: “He ran a great race - he’s a lovely honest horse and ran his heart out. He had a bad draw but he ran the best he could and was just beaten by a better horse on the day.
“There’s a big handicap win in him one day - he’s very genuine.”
GOING AFTER THE FIRST
Eddie Ahern, rider of the 16/1 winner River Captain, said: “It is good - a bit loose on top.”
Catherine Gannon, rider of third Lasso The Moon, described the ground as “Lovely.”
Neil Callan, rider of Union Island, said: “The new strip of ground is definitely the best place to be, the old turf is a bit poached. The new strip rode good.”
Stephen Donohoe, rider of Goliaths Boy, said: “Good Ground.”
Frankie Dettori, rider of Dialogue, said: “Good.”
Ryan Moore, rider of Marching Time, thought the going “Mainly good.”
Jimmy Fortune, rider of London Bridge, said: “Good.”
The running rail which was in use yesterday to doll the out the course on the far side from the six-furlong start to the finish by five or six yards was removed after racing yesterday to provide fresh ground for today.
GOING CHANGED GOOD ON THE ROUND COURSE AFTER THE FIRST
Andrew Cooper, Director of Racing at Epsom Downs, has changed the going on the round course to Good from Good, Good to Firm in places on the round course but has the left the Five-Furlong course as Good to Firm, Good in places after the first race.
“We have had two millimetres of rain so far today and it has just eased the ground on the round course.
“We were expecting to be clear from 11.00am but we seem to be just catching the tail end of the rain as it drifts west, but hopefully this will be about the end of it.”
Race 2 - Investec Woodcote Stakes - Winning Quotes
CORPORAL TAKES WOODCOTE
Corporal Maddox overcame a slow start to land the Listed Investec Woodcote Stakes at 14/1 in the hands of Jim Crowley.
The winning rider said: “He was drawn in 11 what was not great and then he missed the kick. They went a fair old rattle but he has picked up really well.
“This horse has a really fantastic attitude and is so laid back - a proper little horse.
“He is smart but it was just hard to say how good he was going into the race because he had not beaten much. But to win from where he did he had to be smart.”
Karl Burke, the successful trainer who saddled the second in the first race, added: “There were a few doubles and trebles rolling on to him so it was pretty exciting!
“I thought he had definitely improved in his homework since his win at Hamilton. Richard Fahey’s horse who he beat at Hamilton had let the form down since but I thought we were coming here today with a realistic place chance. I didn’t expect him to get so far back though.
“I spoke to the owners before he ran today and said that win, lose or draw we probably wouldn’t be going to Royal Ascot after today.
“Jim said to go for the Coventry but I think it would probably come a bit too quick as it is less than two weeks away and this horse is still a bit of a baby. I think we will wait for the July Meeting at Newmarket.
“His owners, Mogeely Stud, are very good supporters of the yard but unfortunately they could not be here as they are sponsoring a race in Ireland tonight.”
Race 2 - The Investec Woodcote Stakes - Placed Quotes
ALMOST WALKINGONTHE MOON
Connections of Walkingonthemoon were watching a replay of the Investec Woodcote in disbelief as they realised how much ground Corporal Maddox had made up to catch their horse, Walkingonthemoon.
Corporal Maddox, who was about seven lengths behind Walkingonthemoon at the two-furlong pole, won by a neck.
“Look, he’s run a great race, we were beaten by a better horse. If I’d have ben told this morning that we were going to finish second, I would have said that would be okay,” said Tom Dascombe, trainer of Walkingonthemoon.
“We can’t complain about the draw either, as the horse that beat us was drawn in the stall outside us,” added the trainer. Walkingonthemoon was in stall 10, Corporal Maddox, stall 11.
The jockey, Richard Kingscote, did report back to the trainer, though, that the horse hated the course.
Dascombe has no set plans for his sprinter; the only certainty is that Ascot is not an option. “Maybe the July Meeting at Newmarket,” he said.
The Paul Cole-trained juvenile Red Avalanche set the early pace but eventually had to settle for third place.
Oliver Cole, assistant trainer to his father, said: "I think he’s run a good race - the jockey (Martin Dwyer) reported that he didn’t come down the hill very well, but said that when he had him there his cruising speed was good. With a flatter track he’d probably be better - you have to come down the hill here to win.
"He’ll pick up a nice race somewhere. We don’t want to dent his confidence too much so I don’t think he’ll go to Royal Ascot but we’ll find a nice little race and hopefully get back up the ladder again."
CALLAN BANNED
Neil Callan received a two-day ban (June 22 and 23) following his ride on sixth-placed Little Perisher in the Investec Woodcote Stakes. The stewards found him guilty of careless riding in that he caused interference to the unplaced Mon Brav.
Race 3 - Princess Elizabeth Stakes (sponsored by Investec) - Winning Quotes
GUTSY EVA’S LANDS PRINCESS ELIZABETH STAKES
Eva’s Request put up a brave performance to hold on by a length in the Group Three Princess Elizabeth Stakes in the hands of Edward Creighton.
Winning trainer Mick Channon said: “Her owner Liam Mulryan has always been a great supporter of the yard and I am delighted for him. He paid a lot of money for her and we always thought she would come good. You just have to wait with these fillies sometimes.
“The Windsor Forest Stakes at Royal Ascot has always been her main target and I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t go there, providing she is OK after today.”
Looking ahead to the Investec Derby, where the trainer saddles Montaff, he continued: “Montaff is a very good horse - end of story. He is a lot better than you lot (the press) think.”
Edward Creighton added: “She travelled sweetly and finished off her race real good.
“I went round the inside and she took off when we had a gap - she is so tough and genuine.
“She goes on any ground which is the good thing about her - nothing ever puts her off.
“It is massive to win today. Obviously, I would like to win the Derby in the future!”

Trainer Alain de Royer Dupre was philosophical in defeat after Alnadana finished second in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes.
When asked if he thought Alnadana would have won if it had not lugged toward the rail, the Chantilly trainer said: "For sure.
"But she is not used to a course where it slopes like that and it was a big surprise. She ran well and we don’t have any regrets coming here to try.”
Connections of third-placed Spacious were pleased with the filly’s first run of the season and she could now head to Royal Ascot.
“That was a good run for her first race of the season and I’m sure she’s gone the right way since last year,” said trainer James Fanshawe.
Chris Richardson, managing director of owners Cheveley Park Stud, added: “We’re thinking of the Windsor Forest Stakes at Royal Ascot for her but we have also got Heaven Sent in there.
“She probably didn’t quite handle the track coming down the hill but it was great to see her stretching out so well.”
SOUMILLON BANNED
Christophe Soumillon was banned for two days (June 22 and 23) following his ride on second-placed Alnadana in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes. The stewards held that the French-based jockey had allowed his mount to drift left without correction towards the winner Eva’s Request and that this was due to careless riding on his part.

SPRINT KING NICHOLLS STRIKES AGAIN IN INVESTEC ‘DASH’
Dandy Nicholls, who of course does so well with his sprinters, sent out Indian Trail to win the big handicap of the day, the £75,000 Investec ‘Dash’ over the famous five-furlong course at Epsom Downs. Paul Quinn was the winning jockey.
The Thirsk handler saddled four in the contest, including Strike Up The Band who finished third.
Nicholls said of the 11/1 winner: “That was good for Paul. He does well for us and is a very capable jockey on the big day. His win will have given plenty of jockeys encouragement.
“This race is our Derby and I am excited for everybody.
"It’s hard when you’ve got four in the race to keep everybody happy.
"I thought the horse was unlucky last time he ran here [in April], he was drawn on the outside that day. He’s nice horse.”
On his jockey’s waiting tactics, Nicholls added: "You have to ride him like that. You need a lot of luck to ride him like that but more important you need a lot of horse."
“He had a great draw today and Strike Up The Band helped to take him along.”
Paul Quinn added: “It is nice to even have a ride on Derby Day but to ride a winner is just unbelievable.”

THRILLING RUN FOR BIG YORKSHIRE SYNDICATE
Captain Dunne gave the Middleham Park Racing Syndicate XV a huge cheer on Derby day when beaten a short-head in the Investec Dash after a brave front-running effort.
Syndicate manager Tim Palin said: “I feel very emotional that he could run so well - it was a great ride from the jockey. The trainer couldn’t have done any more. He travelled really strongly and just got chinned on the line but we’re delighted.
“There are about 17 people in the syndicate, most of whom are here today and it’s great to have several runners on Derby day.”
Captain Dunne came home best of the syndicate’s two runners in the Dash, the other being Fol Hollow, who finished ninth. Palin said of the runner-up: “You just have to get him out and let him bowl along. Every time he’s won he’s made all and he very nearly did it again today. I’ve been over to Dandy (Nicholls, trainer of the winner and the third) and congratulated him as we had another runner in the race trained by him. We have another runner trained by Dandy later on (Something in the final race of the day) so let’s hope he can make amends.”

COIN OF THE REALM IN MINT CONDITION
Coin Of The Realm was bought to go jumping, but is paying his way on the Flat. Ridden by Pat Dobbs, he took the Investec Surefooted Stakes by two lengths, with Drill Sergeant in second place.
Owners Bob Siddle and Ben Haynes were ecstatic after the four-year-old’s victory, the first in their colours.
“It’s great to get a winner on Derby Day. We bought him in October from Ed Dunlop’s stable, and I think we now owe him a crate of champagne,” said Siddle.
Coin Of The Realm is trained by Gary Moore and had his first race for the new owners in March at Lingfield, over hurdles. A month later the horse had an outing at Epsom finishing fourth in a mile and a half handicap, and was considered unlucky.
Moore thought that contest was key to today’s success. “He ran a nice race here that day and that helped. It’s a big advantage if you’ve been around here before,” he said.
After just three outings in three months, Moore plans to give the horse a rest. “When he comes back, he’ll go hurdling,” he said.
Race 7 - The Investec Distinctive Handicap - Winner Quotes
BALDEMAR WINS IN BURKE’S ABSENCE
So dismissive was trainer Karl Burke of his horse Baldemar’s chances in the final race of Investec Derby Day, that when offered a lift home in a helicopter by Deirdre Johnston, the trainer took it.
Baldemar triumped at 33/1, surviving a stewards’ equiry. Burke had earlier won the Investec Woodcote Stakes, with 14/1 shot Coporal Maddox, making it a 509/1 double on the day.
Co-owner Peter Timmins said it was only touch and go that the horse ran. “The going’s been a bit too fast for him this year. Until the middle of this afternoon, there was a strong chance that we would pull him out,” said Timmins.
The rain that came today, albeit only about 2mm, helped. “Nobody’s saying that it was soft or anything, but it could have made the difference,” he said.
“The trainer was so confident that he left earlier. He’s got a pleasant surprise. We didn’t have loads of money on, but at the price it was we did well enough, thank you very much.
“He’s a horse that Karl’s always thought a lot of, but he does need his conditions and he does need things to drop right and they obviously did,” he said.
JONES AND CROWLEY PICK UP BANS
Jockey Liam Jones was banned for three days (Sunday, June 21 to Tuesday, June 23 inclusive) following his winning ride on Baldemar in the Investec Distinctive Handicap. The stewards held that Jones had allowed mount to drift left and that this was a result of careless riding by Jones.
Jim Crowley was banned for two days (Sunday, June 21 and Monday, June 22) after his ride on runner-up Mac Gille Eoin in the same race. The stewards found Crowley guilty of careless riding as he had allowed his mount to drift left without correction.
The stewards also wanted to question Catherine Gannon, John Egan and Stephen Donohoe about possible interference in the final furlong but as Gannon and Donohoe had already left the course, the enquiry was adjourned to a later date.

It was dry overnight but there has been rain since 7am which is forecast to stop before racing starts.
Andrew Cooper, the Director of Racing at Epsom Downs, said this morning at 9.30am: “I have left the ground the same on the Derby course as yesterday but we will review the going again before racing.
“The slightly quicker places were on the home straight and part of the climb in the back straight.”
“There was one millimetre of rain recorded by 9am.”

OXX SAYS IT IS 50-50 THAT SEA THE STARS STAYS
John Oxx, trainer of the favourite Sea The Stars for today’s Investec Derby, told BBC Radio 4 this morning at Epsom Downs: “He is in good form.
“Sea The Stars has been happy since he arrived yesterday and he has eaten all his feed.
“He is certainly fresh and well in himself and has had a walk out on the course this morning.
“I won the Derby with Sinndar in 2000 and that was a great day. It is a little bit different today in that this fellow has won the 2000 Guineas so there is a bit of expectation about him. He is favourite or almost favourite.
“Sinndar was about 7/1 or 8/1 and had a good chance but we weren’t sure we were going to win.
“This time more people are talking about our horse so it is more nerve wracking I suppose.
“He has only a 50-50 chance of staying - there is always a big worry about any 2000 Guineas winner in the Derby - will they or will they not stay the distance. It is just the same with this fellow - a big, big doubt there.
“It is only 50-50 but it is certainly worth having a go. Sea The Stars knows it is a raceday - that he is somewhere else. He does not read the papers - he doesn’t know it is the Derby.”

EVERY ONE’S A WINNER IF YOU’RE IRISH
Which tipster has bucked the trend in this morning papers and gone for a British winner of the investec Derby? Well, none. Chris McGrath in The Independent asks the obvious question; “Where have all the British horses gone?” And supplies the answer too - gone to Coolmore every one. Greg Wood in The Guardian is on the same hymn-sheet, but adds a coda. “It may not be too long before we see a Derby with nothing but Coolmore-sired horses in the field.” The Investec All-Ireland Derby, it has a certain ring.
With an Irish victory taken as read, the focus is on whether Johnny Murtagh, with six saddles to sit on, has chosen the right one in Rip Van Winkle. Murtagh maintains, in The Racing Post, that he’s “always thought the world of the horse,” which isn’t quite the same as saying, he’ll win. Murtagh “thinks” he’ll stay, but James Willoughby, also in the Post, thinks he won’t.
Bev Swingell in the Daily Express is on Murtagh’s team, probably so the paper can use the ‘Rip can winkle out his rivals’ headline (Rip does quite a lot of winkling in today’s papers). Rob Wright of The Times is in the No Camp (he picks Fame And Glory) as is David Yates, of The Daily Mirror (Fame And Glory). The famous wrong calls that Yates lists include the 2002 Investec Derby, when Mick Kinane chose Hawk Wing ahead of High Chaparral. The beneficiary that day was, of course, Johnny Murtagh. Swings and roundabouts aren’t just on the Hill. The Mirror also includes a cracking feature on the dramatic 1913 Derby.
Mark Winstanley, in The Daily Star, is rooting for Ryan Moore and Black Bear Island (so that’s a no for Murtagh too) and in The Sun, Kieren Fallon thinks that Murtagh should have chosen Fame And Glory. The trouble with jockeys making these assertions, though, rather than journalists, is that jockeys have previous, and Murtagh might just murmur Eagle Mountain in Fallon’s ear. The horse that Fallon didn’t pick in the 2007 Irish Derby was, of course, the winner, Soldier Of Fortune.
Jim White, in The Daily Telegraph, takes a different angle on the race, talking to the well-known punter Patrick Veitch, whose book has just been published. Unfortunately, the one piece of information you wanted from a professional punter wasn’t forthcoming. “I’m sorry I don’t do tips,” said Veitch. “Yeh, thanks for that Patrick,” said White (or something like that).
There are plenty of tributes in the papers to the lately departed Vincent O’Brien and Sir Clement Freud. The Telegraph quotes from Freud’s book, ‘Freud On Course’.
“Small bets are a waste of time,” said Freud. Absolutely.
THE QUEEN ATTENDS INVESTEC DERBY DAY
Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh arrived at the Epsom Downs Racecourse at 1pm. The Queen was wearing a pink hat, dress and coat, with black shoes and gloves. She had a gold and red brooch on her coat.
The Queen’s three-strong motorcade drove down the course from Tattenham Corner.
The full list of those arriving with The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh was:
HRH Princess Alexandra, the Hon. Lady Ogilvy; Jean, Countess of Carnarvon; the Lord Vestey; the Lady Vestey; Sir Michael Oswald; the Lady Angela Oswald; Mr John Warren; the Lady Carolyn Warren; Sir Alan Reid; Lady Reid; the Lady Susan Hussey and Lieutenant Colonel Charles Richards
CONNECTIONS THOUGHTS ON THEIR CHANCES IN THE INVESTEC DERBY
Mick Channon was bullish when asked about his chances with Montaff in the Investec Derby.
“The form is there, I think he’s a good horse and what ever he does today he can only go one way, he can only get better.
“He’s in great nick and I couldn’t be happier.
“I think he’s a proper horse, I know no one else does but I do.
“I wouldn’t have come here if I thought he was a 50/1 shot. I can understand us being a 20/1 shot but the horse has done nothing wrong in his life and he’s as good a three-year-old as I’ve had.
“He’s certainly as good as Youmzain (second in yesterday’s Investec Coronation Cup) at the same stage in his career and I wanted to run him in the Derby.”
Barry Walters, the owner/breeder of Montaff, reflected on his chances in the Investec Derby.
“You’ll have to ask the trainer (M Channon).
“This is my first ever runner at Epsom and the only problem I’ve had is the time it took us to get in. It took over half an hour to get in and we only had to come up from the town.
“I thought I would be in here at ten past eleven so I haven’t had a chance to walk the track.”
Jamie Spencer, jockey of the Brian Meehan-trained Crowded House, said: “He has a chance today and I hope he runs a big race.”
Richard Hughes on the Aidan O’Brien runner Masterofthehorse said: “We hope he’ll have a good run, but we haven’t talked any tactics yet.”
BELL PLEASED WITH INVESTEC OAKS WINNER SARISKA AFTER GOOD NIGHT
Investec Oaks-winning trainer Michael Bell issued an upbeat bulletin on Sariska at 10am on Saturday. The filly has a bandaged hind leg after being struck into by Rainbow View in the closing stages of yesterday’s race but Bell is not unduly worried about her minor injury.
He said: “We haven’t changed her dressing yet this morning but I saw the cut in the stable last night and I’m not overly concerned.
“She ate up and doesn’t appear to be sore in any way. She’s bright-eyed and bushy-tailed this morning.”
Having returned to Newmarket after his Investec Oaks triumph, which put him in an elite band of seven currently licensed trainers to have won both Epsom Classics, Bell celebrated with his staff in a nearby pub.
He said: “We had a great night last night at The Yard, our local watering hole. Lots of the lads came along and there were about 30 or 40 of us, including Jamie Spencer but he didn’t over-imbibe as he has to ride Crowded House in the Derby today.”
BUDGETT TOUCHED TO BE GUEST OF HONOUR FORTY YEARS AFTER HIS FIRST DERBY TRIUMPH
Dual Derby-winning trainer Arthur Budgett is the guest of honour for the 2009 Investec Derby 40 years after he sent out his homebred Blakeney to land the Classic in 1969.The 93-year-old, who followed up the extraordinary achievement of being owner, trainer and breeder of the Derby winner when Blakeney’s half-brother Morston won at Epsom four years later, is joined by his family, including his wife Bay and son Chris, who runs Kirtlington Stud, and Blakeney’s jockey Ernie Johnson.
“I’m very grateful and touched to have been made guest of honour,” said Budgett before racing. “I love Derby day - I missed it last year but otherwise we’ve been back almost every year.
“After Blakeney won we were invited to meet the Queen, which was a great honour and our old stud groom came with us to meet her. He was such a good man and I was very lucky to have him.
“My wife’s brother ran our stud and he’d studied the catalogue thoroughly at the time we bought Windmill Girl (the dam of Blakeney and Morston) as a foal. We didn’t think we’d get anything for the money we had. She went through and wasn’t sold so we ran round there and offered them a price and got her. She was a wonderful filly and was very unlucky not to have won the Oaks.”
Drawing comparisons to Epsom in the modern era, Budgett said: “The whole thing has changed now. There used to be the most tremendous fair and thousands and thousands of people here. It was quite different. I used to like the old days but we have to move with the times and they do it very well now.”
Ernie Johnson, who had his first taste of Epsom’s unique challenge aboard Blakeney, said: “It’s unbelievable really that we’re both here together 40 years on from winning with Blakeney. He was my first ride in the Derby and you couldn’t better that really, it’s still the best day of my life.
“Keith Piggott (father of Lester) went through the films of Lester’s old Derbys with me. He told me to how to ride the race and to keep off the fence coming down the hill so you had the choice and weren’t hindered if a horse dropped back in front of you. Blakeney was wonderful, he was the ideal horse for Epsom - he was more laidback than any of us and had such a good temperament.
Budgett added: “I remember we used to walk the horses across the Downs to the start in those days and Blakeney stopped half-way across and just stood looking around. Then, when he was satisfied everything was okay, he just carried on. He was a very easy horse to deal with.”
The Budgett family also has connections to a more recent Epsom hero, the 2006 Derby winner Sir Percy.
“My son does a bit of pinhooking and he got Sir Percy for practically nothing,” Budgett explained. “ It was lovely to be here to see him win the Derby, especially as he was out of a Blakeney mare.”
