ROYAL ASCOT 2009
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
FIFTH DAY, SATURDAY, JUNE 20

FIRST RACE WINNING QUOTES
CHESHAM STAKES (LISTED)

BIG AUDIO IS DYNAMITE

Richard Hannon trained his third winner at Royal Ascot this year and Richard Hughes rode his fourth when Big Audio held off the fast-finishing Emperor Claudius to win the Chesham Stakes by a short-head.

“The ground was a bit of a worry today because I think it was bit against him when he was second at Doncaster last time,” said Hannon. “We thought the extra furlong would be no problem and he has come good today.

“I thought Aidan’s horse was going to nail us when he came on the stands’ side but luckily the line came in time. To have had three winners this week is fantastic but sadly the owner (Michael Pescod) couldn’t be here because he is preparing for a housewarming party tomorrow.”

The Oratorio colt banged his head on the stalls and Hannon was holding a tooth the horse lost as result. “It’s just a baby tooth and it will grow back so it’s nothing serious,” he added.

Hughes, who rode a treble on Tuesday, has now had four wins on the meeting along with the suspended Johnny Murtagh, who is still just ahead with one second.

“I rang Johnny this morning and said to him I doubted that I’d ride a winner today so he should be OK,” said Hughes. “I told him I wouldn’t swap Tuesday’s treble for any championship so if I win it, I win it but if I don’t my best friend will so I don’t mind how it ends up.

“He’s a lazy horse at home and jumped well today but I thought they were going too quick up front - we were 15 lengths off the leader halfway through.

“I had to get quite serious with him and we were left alone in front and he swerved in the last 100 yards but there was nothing I could do and luckily he didn’t give the race away. If he’d had the rail he would have been fine.

"He's a horse with a future and he's pretty raw at this stage."

PARTY DOCTOR SO NEARLY WHAT DASCOMBE ORDERED

Big Audio narrowly held off Emperor Claudius to land the opening Chesham Stakes on the final day of Royal Ascot, but Party Doctor ran a big race to take third in the colours of Sir Robet Ogden.

Sir Robert was joined in the winner’s enclosure by his racing manager, Barry Simpson, and also trainer Tom Dascombe, who said: “He’s a horse for the future. He wouldn’t want the really quick ground he’s had to face in all his runs, but this race was the aim so I had to get some education into him along the way.

“If Royal Ascot had been held in a month’s time it would have helped us - although I’m sure it would have helped the others, too.

“I told Barry the horse was for sale and that he would be our best chance at Royal Ascot and Sir Robert bought him. He’s a super horse and hopefully he’ll give us a bit of fun in the future.

“Unless the owner says otherwise I’d like to turn him out in a field for two weeks to get his head down and eat some grass. He could do with a bit of time - he’s got no arse on him at the moment.”

Second race - Hardwicke Stakes - winner’s quotes

CANNON SHOOTS STRAIGHT TO CLAIM GOLD, NOT BRONZE

Bronze Cannon defied a 3lb penalty and the concession of weight to eight rivals to win the Hardwicke Stakes over one mile and four furlongs.

Carrying the colours of Anthony Oppenheimer, member of the well-known diamond-mining family and head of Newmarket’s Hascombe & Valiant Studs, Bronze Cannon reeled in Campanologist in the final furlong to score by half a length.

Trainer John Gosden said: “He won the Jockey Club Stakes, a Group Two race at Newmarket, and picked up the penalty. At that point I thought ‘Oh, oh, we are always going for the Hardwicke, but it’s going to be difficult now’.

“Frankie had been telling me Campanologist was his best chance of the week and he expected to win, but our horse has shown tremendous courage and beaten the lot of them.

“He missed the Derby last year due to a little hiccup, then came here to Royal Ascot, ran in the King Edward VII Stakes and hurt himself. These things happen, but we put him away and then brought him back.

“This season we started him off in two all-weather races and he ran well in those and has since won two Group Two races. We’re heading towards a Group One with him now, but we’re happy where we are at the moment.”

Jimmy Fortune said: “They went very quick early, but I was happy to sit out the back. He’s only small, but he’s got a heart that’s twice the size he is.

“Frankie [Dettori, on Campanologist] wasn’t stopping, but my lad was just pulling a bit more out. It was a good effort to win with a penalty, he’s beaten good horses and he gets a mile and a half well, but I wouldn’t like to say where he should run next.”

Second Race - The Hardwicke Stakes - Placed horses

CAMPANOLOGIST
CAN’T QUITE HOLD ON

Trainer Saeed Bin Suroor admitted that he thought that Campanologist had come to win his race when he flew into the lead one and a half furlongs out in the Hardwicke Stakes. “I thought for a second that he was going to win,” said Bin Suroor.

But Campanologist, who started 2/1 favourite, was gradually worn down by the John Gosden-trained Bronze Cannon, and was beaten half a length.

“I had been confident coming into the race. He was working really well and was sound and healthy. I think they went too fast early and that didn’t suit him, but he [Bronze Cannon] is a very good horse,” said the trainer.

Dansant ran perhaps his best race on turf to finish in third place, three and a half lengths behind the winner, and connections are now aiming high with the five-year-old.

“I hope this will be his FA Cup year,” said the trainer Gerard Butler.

“We’re in a few tasty spots including the King George [VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes] and I wouldn’t mind coming back here for that - with the Breeders’ Cup Marathon as his long-term prospect,” added Gerard

INITIAL QUOTES FOR THE GOLDEN JUBILEE STAKES WINNER

Michael Bell, trainer of Art Connoisseur who won the £490,500 Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes at 20/1, said: “He was second to Mastercraftsman in Ireland after winning the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot last year.

“He cracked a cannon bone in the Gimcrack Stakes which everybody knew about. We then ran him at the start of this season in the Free Handicap (at Newmarket) to see if he would stay the mile for the Guineas but he was clearly a sprinter in that race.

“This has been the target since. I would have been more confident but the for the fact that a month ago he popped a splint which was very sore. He swam twice a day for about a fortnight and then he came back in to us.

“I would say he has been cantering for about a fortnight and did three bits of work. Tom (Queally - the winning rider) came and rode him work last week when Jamie (Spencer) got suspended and Art Connoisseur worked very nicely but this victory is still a big surprise.

“I thought it was a boy against men today but he answered every call and Tom gave him a peach of a ride.

“It has been a great season, Richard Green and I - I own a share in him - turned down a lot of money for him after he won the Coventry and I was slightly regretting it over the winter but now it looks the right decision.”

Queally added: “I came in for the ride when Jamie got suspended and it makes up for Michael (Bell) beating us in the Oaks.

“It was good to be on board today and the horse did very well. They went a hell of a gallop and there was a lot of scrimmaging for position. I just gave him time and when I got the split, it was do or die up the rail.

“He idles in his work and only does enough. I was fortunate that when I hit the front I was getting close to the line. In fairness to him I gave him a couple cracks and he knuckled right down. It is great.

“This means everything to me, riding in big races and having big winners is what it is all about. I am very fortunate and thanks to Mr Bell for giving me the opportunity. Let’s hope it is onwards from here.”

Third Race - The Golden Jubilee Stakes - Winners Quotes

ART CONNOISSEUR SWIMS TO VICTORY

Art Connoisseur, who won last year’s Coventry Stakes, stepped up on that with a superlative performance in the Jubilee Stakes, to win by a neck, at 20/1, from the American-trained Cannonball.

Trainer Michael Bell looked both surprised and relieved as he entered the winning enclosure as the horse almost didn’t make the race, through injury.

“About a month ago, things were going to plan and then he popped a splint on his off-fore and it was very sore. When it first happened I thought ‘Oh God’, as a splint’s quite serious. But I took the decision there and then just to send him swimming.

“We had to swim him for about a fortnight, twice a day, and he came back and did three bits of work. He worked with an 80-rated handicapper, and it was difficult quite to know if he was back to his best or not.

“He was moving very well and that’s the thing, having had a splint. He did another bit of work on Wednesday and he was moving fine. He had a swim on Thursday and Friday, and boxed him up here this morning.

“He obviously loves this track. He looked very good when he won the Coventry and we turned down telephone numbers for him and now it looks the right decision.

“These sprinters tend to get better with age. He’s suited by this track and he likes seeing horses get on with it early on. And Tom [Queally] gave him a peach of a ride.

“I’m delighted for Tom, but it’s bad luck for Jamie [Spencer] and normally if Jamie hadn’t been riding him Hayley [Turner] would have been riding him and it’s just gutting at the moment. I said the BHA that Hayley might have had a chance to ride this horse and it’s cost her the best part of £25,000 so something needs to be happening.

“It’s been a very good June for us and there’s a few days left. We’ve got the Northumberland Plate next week.”

Queally said: “He had an outside chance, so I was always riding him to get placed more than anything else. Thankfully he kept going. It was pretty awesome. I sat on him last week . He worked quite well though he idled a little bit. He does what he’s asked to do, but thankfully he did a little bit more than that today. Form at the meeting would always have to be a plus and thankfully he remembered the place. To get a big winner like this is unbelievable.”

THIRD RACE PLACED QUOTES
GOLDEN JUBILEE STAKES (GROUP 1)

CANNON FIRES GREAT PARTING SHOT FOR WARD

Cannonball narrowly failed to provide the perfect end to a dream week for Californian trainer Wesley Ward when missing out by a neck in the Golden Jubilee.

“I just wished I could have got the money for his owner Mr (Kenneth) Ramsey, who has been my main man since we moved stables. We were just eyeing up the gold cup (for the winner),” said Ward.

“Unfortunately Johnny (Velzaquez) couldn’t stay on to ride the horse but I’m sure Mr Peslier rode a beautiful race although I haven’t seen it again yet.

“Anytime you get beat like that it’s a tough one, it’s a bit like kissing your sister when you’re second. But at the same time it’s an honour to be placed in a race like this.

“The original intention was to go for the July Cup but he’s had two hard runs very quickly and I like to give them a break between races so will talk it over with Mr Ramsey.

“This is such a great sporting event and I think that if a lot of American owners and trainers saw how big it was they would also come here.

“If I ever come back again I’ll make sure I bring one of my top horses. We were very lucky that the filly in the Queen Mary (Jealous Again) was just in top form on the day.

“It took a lot of talking to persuade my owners to come over because it’s very expensive, there are no supplements to come here so if you’re not getting prize money it would be costly.”

Third-placed Lessons In Humility ran a blinder in third and her trainer Karl Burke said: “That was her best performance ever by a long way and hopefully there is more to come. I knew the filly was in great form and the idea was to get as much black type as possible this season, which she’s done - winning a Listed, a Group Three and now being placed in a Group One.

“She’s not in the July Cup, she’d have to be supplemented but there are plenty of other races for her. The idea was to send her to the sales at the end of the season but her owner enjoys racing and I’d say there’s every chance she’d stay in training next year.”

South African raider J J The Jet Plane finished fourth when sent off 5/2 favourite and his trainer Mike de Kock said: “We’re obviously disappointed but it’s a difficult result to judge - he passed some horses, then they passed him and he passed them again.

“It was really a three-furlong race because they cantered for the first three and it has long been my suspicion that he wants seven furlongs or a mile. But he’ll still go for the July Cup as it’s a stiff six furlongs there.”

J J The Jet Plane’s rider Kevin Shea added: “We went very easily in the first couple of furlongs but I’ve no excuses. It’s just one of those in racing but I have to say it’s a bitter pill to swallow.”

Third race - Golden Jubilee Stakes - quotes

‘YOU’VE NOT SEEN THE BEST OF SACRED,’ SAYS JOCKEY

Crack Hong Kong sprinter Sacred Kingdom finished fifth in today’s Golden Jubilee Stakes, a disappointing conclusion to a bold challenge.

Jockey Brett Prebble said: “He’s run well, although we’re disappointed not to win. I think a flat track would suit my horse better - he’s used to pure sprinting, that’s what he’s accustomed to and not the tough, grinding-out effort you need to win a race like this.”

Prebble said he did not get the start he hoped for, and added: “In Hong Kong and Singapore a man is placed in the [starting] stall to keep each horse flat [calm] and without that my horse wanted to rear and carry on. During the race he got buffeted about a bit and they really didn’t go that quick.

“You’ve not seen the best of him - that’s not his true form. Given the different circumstances I’m not too disappointed and we’ll get him back home where the sprinting tracks will suit him better.”

Mark Player, head of international races at the Hong Kong Jockey Club, said Sacred Kingdom’s previous race in Singapore “may have taken a bit more out of him than we thought”, and added: “He sweated up a bit today, but that may have been the different environment.”

He added: “He got in a bit of a bumping match early on in today’s race and had to chop and change strides several times. He couldn’t get into his usual rhythm, but he made his move and then flattened out over the final 400 metres.

“It’s a performance we’re proud of, but it wasn’t a winning one. At least we picked up some prize-money [£11,232] and flew the flag for Hong Kong in that way. Hopefully we’ll be back another time to put the record straight. We’ll give him a break now and then look at Japan’s Spinters Stakes in October - if not we’ll go for the Hong Kong Sprint Trial in November.”

Kingsgate Native, last year’s winner, finished last but one in thirteenth after returning to racing - he was retired to stud last autumn, but failed to fulfil that role and joined trainer Sir Michael Stoute in late March. Chris Richardson, stud manager for Cheveley Park Stud, the horse’s owners, said: “We’re a little disappointed. He broke well, but didn’t get any cover and then got tired. He was off a long time and missed some early-season conditioning and preparatory work.

“This was his first run back, I’m sure he’ll improve and could keep running for a number of years. I expect he’ll now have a go at the July Cup.”

FOURTH RACE WINNING QUOTES WOKINGHAM STAKES (HANDICAP)

HIGH STANDING PULLS OFF LONG-STANDING PLAN

A plan hatched at the Horses In Training Sale at Tattersalls eight months came to fruition when High Standing continued his unbeaten run for new trainer William Haggas when landing the £100,000 Wokingham Handicap.

The four-year-old was bought out of Simon Callaghan’s stable for 56,000 guineas in October by owners Harry Findlay and Tony Bloom, two of the country’s biggest punters, and - sent off 6/1 favourite today - was partnered by Ryan Moore to land the spoils by three-quarters of a length.

“There were hundreds of horses in the sale but he was William’s nap and the nap of my form man Glen Gill,” recalled Findlay. “They both nominated him as a Wokingham horse the day we bought him. From that moment on all William has done is look after him.

“I’m a jumping man first and foremost but love winning, whether it’s a seller or whatever, and haven’t gone mad backing him today - I was worried about the draw. I don’t bet antepost and just had a few quid on at 8.8 (7.8/1) before the off.

“I’m delighted Tony could be here with his family, a lot of whom are over from Australia, it’s the one meeting of the year he can come to because he is so busy. Tony’s based in Brighton and has bankrolled the football team there for the next 10 years.

“I had my first Flat horse, Escayola, with William and he has been such a big help and taught me so much over the last four years - I call him ‘The Educator’.”

Haggas added: “It was obvious that a horse like him should go for a race like this. He’s always shown a lot of talent and was effectively 2lb well in but I was worried that he might not get into the race. I thought after the Golden Jubilee that the far side might be the place to be and Ryan got stopped in his run and said he did well to get there.

“I think he’s probably quite a useful horse and hopefully might graduate into better company. He’ll have a penalty that will get him into the Stewards’ Cup but whether we go for something a bit better I don’t know. I don’t think he wants to have his races too quickly so I’ll have to see.

“He’s tricky to deal with but his lad Pierre and my assistant have done a great job with him - they take him to work on his own. I call it having character, it’s only when they are not much good that you call it temperament.

“He won the race well and I have been worried about the horses all week but it’s great to finish on a high.

“I’m delighted for Mr Findlay and Mr Bloom, they have seven with me and have pumped a lot of money into racing and people like that need to win on this stage. I’d never actually met Mr Bloom before today.”

Jockey Ryan Moore added: "I wanted to drop him out and get him into a nice rhythm, but he was first out of the stalls so I had to take him back. At the two pole I made a move towards the far rail and he quickened up really well close home.”

Fourth race - Wokingham Handicap - placed quotes

ASSET IS JUST THAT FOR GODOLPHIN

The joint-topweights ran fine races in the Wokingham Handicap, with Asset taking second and Rock Of Rochelle third - both horses carried 9st 10lb and were drawn high in stalls 27 and 25 respectively.

Frankie Dettori, who wore the Godolphin blue colours on Asset, said: “He ran a super race and was just beaten by the favourite [High Standing]. The race worked out fine for me and the horse ran great.”

Simon Crisford, Godolphin’s racing manager, said: “He’s run a fantastic race and put up a big effort. He just found one too good on the day.

“He was drawn on the far side and had to stay there, but to have run that well under such a big weight is marvellous. He was giving 12lb to the winner, but that’s what handicaps are for.”

Rock Of Rochelle is one of 14 horses trained by Andrew Kinsella in County Kildare. The horse ran well when fifth in the Group 2 Duke Of York Stakes earlier this season and clearly likes his trips across the Irish Sea.

Kinsella said: “The travelling seems to wake him up - the dynamics over here seem to have an impact on him and he loves a straight track.

“I probably shouldn’t have run him at Leopardstown last time, because two days before he ran away with his jockey [groom] at home. I hold my hands up and admit I got it wrong.

“It’s fantastic to come over here and I take my hat off to Ascot. The mind boggles when you see it all and compare it to what we’re used to at home. For me to have a good run here is the highlight of my career so far.”

Fifth race - Duke of Edinburgh Handicap - winner’s quotes

SERGEANT QUICKSTEPS TO TOP IN JOHNSTON ONE-TWO

Middleham in Yorkshire trainer Mark Johnston saddled a one-two in the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap as Drill Sergeant, ridden by Joe Fanning beat Record Breaker under Royston ffrench.

Johnston, who also ran Road To Love in the race, said: “That was a little bit like days of old. My horses went into the race in tip-top condition and I knew they would stay every inch of the trip and take some catching.”

Fancied Hatton Flight stumbled on exiting the stalls, unshipped jockey Walter Buick and then galloped loose in front of the field, just ahead of the pace-setting Road To Love and Drill Sergeant. Johnston said: “The loose horse was a problem to begin with in that Road To Love is very easily set alight and as a result he probably hasn’t stayed the trip.

“On the other hand it gave Drill Sergeant something to chase in the final two furlongs and that’s helped him along.

“No horse deserved to win more. I wrote to the handicapper after his last run at Epsom imploring him not to put the horse up again. He’s run in 25 races and not picked up a lot money given how consistent he is - at least he’s got his just desserts today.”

Of runner-up Record Breaker, Johnston said: “Arguably he was the best horse in the race. We knew Road To Love would be fast away and I said to the other two jockeys to follow him across. Record Breaker couldn’t do that because of the loose horse and ended up back in the field early on. To be fair he probably couldn’t go the early pace and probably needs another two furlongs to be at his very best.”

Fifth Race - The Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap - Placed Quotes

MARTYR EYES THE EBOR

Richard Hannon who, with three wins, is destined to finish runner-up to Barry Hills in the London Clubs International Charity Trophy for top trainer, added another feather to his cap when Martyr ran a solid race to finish third in the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap.

Harry Herbert, of the owners Highclere Throughbred Racing, said: “We’re thrilled. He’s run a cracking race. From where he was drawn [14] he had to blow a little gas to get a position.

“We might well step him up now. Richard [Hannon] thinks that we can start looking at the Ebor,” said Herbert.

Young Mick was fourth, the third time the gelding has been placed in the race. George Margarson, his trainer, said: “I’m chuffed to bits. He’s run in this race three times, won it off 89 and been placed off 101 last year.

“Everybody says he’s gone, but he’s better than he was two years ago. He was off 96 today, put him off 89 again, he’d have won it, wouldn’t he?

“When the lose horse [Hatton Flight] went out in front, they were all a bit keen to chase after it. Because of that he saw far more daylight than we wanted.

“He’ll now go for the Old Newton Cup again. We’ll take the same route as we did last year,” said the trainer.

The Stewards enquired into the fall of Hatton Flight, which unseated jockey William Buick just after the start. They were satisfied that it was caused by the horse stumbling and took no further action.

Sixth Race - The Queen Alexandra Stakes - Winner Quotes

CARACCIOLA TWELVE YEARS YOUNG

Caracciola became the oldest horse in modern times to win a Royal Ascot race when, timing his run to perfection, the 12-year-old claimed the Queen Alexandra Stakes, the longest race in the Flat calendar. But absent from the celebrations in the winning enclosure was the trainer, Nicky Henderson.

Piers Pottinger, the owner, gave the reason for Henderson’s absence: “The trainer is fishing. I’ve banned him from turning up because Caracciola only wins a big race when he’s not here.

Explaining the race tactics, Pottinger said: “We thought we’d keep him in mid-division and coming round the last bend get him going and that’s, of course, what we did. The horse has got to have good to firm ground and Eddie [Ahern] has a real affinity with him.

“What a tough, courageous and game horse he is. He keeps making history. He’s the oldest horse even to win at Ascot, which is extraordinary.

“Initially the Melbourne Cup was a joke, but now I know Nicky has a hat with corks hanging down on it and says that we are not going to ban him from Melbourne. I’m not sure the Aussies will be thrilled with a 12-year-old turning up there.

“We may supplement him for the Breeders’ Cup Marathon. It sounds ridiculous, a 12-year-old doing this, but he’s the most extraordinary horse I’ve ever owned, without any doubt.”

Eddie Ahern, riding his third winner of the week, said: “He travelled well throughout the race. We went a nice even tempo, and the further we were going, the better he went.

“There was a bit of a rush about four furlongs out, but I didn’t want to chase the boys, I just thought wait till I get to the top of the hill. It was one of those races that just panned out, but the horse did it all for me,” said the jockey.

SIXTH RACE PLACED QUOTES
QUEEN ALEXANDRA STAKES

TRIP TO SALES NEXT FOR TYRRELLS WOOD

The Terry Mills-trained Tyrrells Wood is heading to Tattersalls’ July Sale in Newmarket next month after finishing second in the Queen Alexandra Stakes.

“He got chopped up and you’d have to say he was somewhat unlucky,” said Mills’ assistant Richard Ryan. “He’s improving a lot and runs over hurdles, he does both jobs well.

“He’s heading to the July Sales with a nice reserve on him and if he doesn’t sell he’ll go for the Goodwood Handicap, have a hurdling campaign and come back here next year.”

Michael Jarvis, trainer of third-placed Amerigo, said: “He’s run his race and we’ve no excuses. He’ll probably drop back to a mile and six furlongs because there are a lot more of those races.”

RECORD-BREAKING CROWD PROVES ROYAL ASCOT APPEAL

No fewer than 78,790 people attended Royal Ascot today, a record for a single day at the famous meeting.

That figure is 11% up on last year, when 70,675 walked through the gates.

Ascot chief executive Charles Barnett, said: “To conclude a memorable Royal Meeting, which has truly had everything, with an all-time record Royal Ascot crowd of 78,790 is extremely satisfying.

“Attendances all week have been broadly in line with our forecasts and actually slightly better as we were predicting a reduction of between 5% and 10% but, thanks to a healthy walk up on the heath today of 2,500, we actually finish just 3% behind last year’s figure.

“In January, our like-for-like sales were 20% behind on 2008, but an imaginative marketing campaign, a real push to attract groups and the compelling race programme, which has been more international than ever before, have all played their part in achieving a remarkable final attendance in the current climate.

“Although 16% down, hospitality has held up as well as could be expected, certainly better than a lot of other sporting events from what I am hearing. The spend in bars and restaurants this week is actually 3% up at the latest count.

“I would like to extend my thanks to all the owners, trainers and jockeys that have made this week so special, especially those that have travelled from around the world to be here. I’m sure everyone is as delighted as we are that Barry Hills won the London Clubs International Trophy as top trainer, which was hopefully a huge fillip to him as he has been unable to be here this week due to illness.”

MURTAGH AND HILLS ARE LEADING TRAINER AND JOCKEY

Johnny Murtagh and Barry Hills have been crowned leading jockey and trainer at Royal Ascot 2009, and take the London Clubs International Charity Trophies.

Murtagh won four races, the same number as Richard Hughes, but also partnered a second, and that was enough to deny his rival the title. Ryan Moore finished third with three winners.

It was close in the trainers’ title, too, with Hills just shading it from Richard Hannon - both men sent out three winners, but once again a second proved the deciding factor.

The victory is especially sweet for Hills, his family and all the staff at South Bank Stables in Lambourn. Hills was unable to attend the meeting following a serious case of blood poisoning.

Having been hospitalised for five weeks he was allowed home only yesterday, and delayed his departure just long enough to watch television coverage of his filly, Ghanaati, winning one of the week’s premier events, the Coronation Stakes.

The going remains Good to Firm.

The GoingStick readings at 8am were: Overall 10.1 Straight 11.1, Round 9.4.

There were four millimetres of water put on the course overnight.

A millimetre of rain has fallen early this morning (up to 9am).

Chris Stickels, the Clerk of the Course at Ascot, said at 9.15am: “We have not had very much rain this morning - just a millimetre so far. It has made the ground a little damp on top but I expect that to dry out a bit as we go through the morning.

“I am not expecting much more rain. We put four millimetres of water on the track overnight.

“The ground got quite quick yesterday but no-one was indicating there was any jar in it.

“It continues to be good to firm today. People have been complimentary about the ground this week. The track has held up well after four days of racing - the groundsmen have done a good job.

“When you walk from one side of the straight course to the other there does not appear to be any bias.

“I am quite surprised that the jockeys this year have not been coming down the middle of the track as much as they did last year.

“The Royal meeting has gone really well so far. We have had some great results over the four days and everyone seems to have had a good time. It has been the best Royal meeting that I have experienced.

“The Silver Ring and Grandstand are a sell-out, with the only admission available today to those who have not pre-booked being the Heath (cost £7). We are expecting up to 77,000 people.”

The forecast is for mainly dry weather today.

WILL THE JET PLANE LAND THE JUBILEE
AT THE MOST INTERNATIONAL ROYAL ASCOT IN HISTORY

The international flavour of Royal Ascot has never been more evident than at this year’s meeting, with runners trained in Australia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, South Africa, Spain and USA. So far, the foreign contingent can claim six victories; and those winners come from four countries, which is the most winning nations at any Royal Ascot.

It was trainer Dan Morton, in the King’s Stand Stakes, who made the first impact on the opening day. British-trained horses had completely dominated the opening event, the Queen Anne Stakes, largely because there wasn’t a single overseas-trained runner in the race. But cometh the King’s Stand, cometh the man (and the horse).

Scenic Blast lived up to his name, and for the fifth time in seven years (four of them in the King’s Stand) a Australian had won at Royal Ascot. An Irishman followed close behind, Aidan O’Brien winning the day’s feature race, the St James’s Place Stakes, with Mastercraftsman. Then, to cap it all, Strike The Tiger, at 33/1, bulldozed his way to victory in the Windsor Castle Stakes and Wesley Ward became the first USA-based trainer ever to win at Royal Ascot.

Eric Libaud added to the mix on Wednesday, the Frenchman winning the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes with Vision d’Etat. Ward struck again for America with his filly Jealous Again, in the Queen Mary Stakes, and at the close of day two, five of the 12 races contested had gone to the away team.

By day three, the Wesley Ward effect had kicked in and Yogaroo was backed in to 100/30 to give the American a third success. But Yogaroo could finish only ninth after turning sharp left two furlongs out. Just one race fell to the overseas contingent on Thursday, but as that winner was Yeats, you could say the away team was still pretty dominant.

Friday belonged to the home team, every single winner being trained in the UK, in fact, they were all trained in England, though one of those trainers, Mark Johnston, would rather not be called English.

With the brakes having been put on, the overseas raiders must now win four of the final six races to equal the record tally of 2008 Royal Ascot when the away team recorded 10 victories (albeit it eight of them from Irish trainers). Four wins is just about possible, for there is an overseas challenge in four of the six races. The Golden Jubilee is the most vulnerable with Paddy Power rating a non-European win a 5/6 bet - and should J J Jet Plane be the winner, it will the first South African victory at Royal Ascot - and make it the fifth overseas nation to win this week, a record, naturally.

GLOBAL RAIDERS DOMINATE GOLDEN JUBILEE BETTING

No one can doubt that Royal Ascot’s bid to make the meeting’s two Group One sprints truly international events is proving a success - unless you are involved with one of the home-trained runners.

They face another formidable raiding party from overseas today in the £450,000 Golden Jubilee Stakes over six furlongs, the second British leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, in which South Africa’s JJ The Jet Plane, Hong Kong’s Sacred Mountain and America’s Cannonball make a triumvirate with triumph in mind. Add in the Greece-owned and bred Ialysos - who is now trained in England by Italian Luca Cumani - and Ireland’s Duff and Bushranger, and it is not hard to envisage all the prize money leaving on a jet plane.

That a foreign-trained horse will start favourite for today’s feature is in little doubt, and bookmakers reckon it will be the Mike de Kock-trained JJ The Jet Plane or Ricky Yiu’s Sacred Kingdom who will hold that honour. George Primarolo of totesport says: “I don’t think it will be possible to split them - they’ll go off joint-favourites,” while Kate Miller of William Hill slightly favours Sacred Kingdom.

Do foreign horses adversely affect betting on races? Paddy Power thinks not, saying: “Take yesterday’s Albany Stakes as an example, the fact that US raider Aegean was so strong enabled us to make a book, because without her Lillie Langtry would have been an odds-on shot. Aegean’s presence meant we were able to spread the risk and lay more horses.”

Power reckons JJ The Jet Plane will head bookies’ lists at the off, adding: “There are a few negative vibes around Sacred Kingdom - he may have had a hard race last time and we have eased him to 3/1 from 11/4 - and JJ The Jet Plane will certainly be popular with name pickers. I can see the tote taking a lot of bets on him.”
Power’s Golden Jubilee special offers 5-6 a winner from the rest of the world, evens a British-trained winner, and 16/1 about one of the two Irish contenders.

Of the home team Power reckons the William Haggas-trained Kings Apostle will be well supported, while William Hill report backing for Art Connoisseur from Michael Bell’s stable. He is now 33/1 from 40/1.

Victory for Australia’s Scenic Blast in the five-furlong King’s Stand Stakes, the first British leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, on Tuesday was a good omen for long-distance travellers, and while British-trained horses have won the Golden Jubilee Stakes in each of the past three years, they are up against it today.

BELL TOLLS FOR CAMPANOLOGIST RIVALS

Frankie Dettori could end Royal Ascot on a winner today thanks to Campanologist, a leading contender for the £125,000 Hardwicke Stakes (3.05).

Successful in last year’s King Edward VII Stakes over the same course and distance, Campanologist ran well enough when unplaced in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown last month, and the Frankie-factor is bound to have some impact on the Saturday of the Royal meeting.

William Hill has cut the Godolphin-owned, Saeed bin Suroor-trained four-year-old to 3-1 from 100-30, while Boylesports has tightened him from 3-1 to 5-2.

Other Hardwicke Stakes’ runners who have been supported this morning include Dansant (8-1 from 10-1) and Steele Tango (28-1 from 40-1) with totesport, while Doctor Fremantle has been eased by Boylesports to 13-8 from 11-8.

Punters who like big-field conundrums are well catered for at Royal Ascot today, when 27 runners will contest the £100,000 Wokingham Handicap (4.25), and 17 are due to line up for the £50,000 Duke of Edinburgh Handicap (5.00).

There are plenty of market movers in these two contests, with totesport reporting changes for High Standing (6-1 from 7-1), Exclamation (20-1 from 25-1), Brave Prospector (33-1 from 40-1) and Orpsie Boy (25-1 from 33-1). Boylesports has cut High Standing to 11-2 from 6-1, making Coral’s 13-2 from 7-1 look tempting. Coral has also seen money for Brave Prospector, whose odds of 33-1 have been shaved to 25-1.

Heron Bay (12-1 from 20-1) and Pires (12-1 from 16-1) are movers with totesport for the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap , while Boylesports has seen moves for Crackentorp (5-1 from 6-1), Young Mick (10-1 from 12-1) and Pires (11-1 from 14-1).

In this race Coral has seen support for Record Breaker and Heron Bay who are now both 14-1 from 18-1.

FACE OF ASCOT TO BE DECIDED AT 2.45pm

Style, beauty and personality will be key requirements when this year’s ‘Face of Ascot’ winner is decided in the winner’s enclosure at 2.45pm.

So step forward Heather Naylor, Callie Moore and Susie Sparkes, who will appear live on BBC 1 when the final is decided. The three were all present at the races earlier this week and were subsequently short-listed from among some 20 women who were picked out by judges.

This is the second year in which the Face of Ascot has been a feature of the Royal meeting. American Julie Falconer won the inaugural competition and immediately fulfilled her first role by presenting the winner’s trophy for the final race of the meeting.

In the following 12 months she has represented the racecourse in a number of ways - she attended the Betfair Pride of Racing Awards at Lord’s Cricket Ground, appeared in fashion features in the Sunday Express and took part in a professional portfolio fashion shoot at the Models 1 studio. These photographs have been used to help boost awareness of the Royal meeting by appearing on leaflets, posters and websites.

Julie has also returned to this year’s Royal Ascot to front the Face of Ascot 2010 campaign, for which Heather, Callie and Susie are now in competition.

The judges who will decide which woman gains this prestigious accolade are Jeff Banks, former presenter of the Clothes Show, Trudy LeMaire, fashion editor of the Sunday Express, James Sherwood, a fashion expert who has been such a feature of the BBC’s Royal Ascot coverage, and Karen Diamond, a director of Models 1.

CALLIE IS THE FACE OF ASCOT FOR 2010

Callie Moore, a nanny who is based in London, is the Face of Ascot for 2010.

She beat Heather Naylor and Susie Sparkes to take the final of the award, which was shown live today on BBC 1. All three women had been racegoers at the meeting earlier in the week when they were picked out by judges impressed by their beauty, style and personality.

Stunned by her success, Callie said: “It is amazing. I am completely in shock.”

Jeff Banks, who was one of the judges, said of the final trio: “They represented three different images and that made it very hard to split them

“Callie has a rather old-fashioned appeal. She looks like a model in the style of Margaux Hemingway.”

One of Callie’s first roles will be to present the trophy to the winner of Royal Ascot’s final race, the Queen Alexandra Stakes. Over the next 12 months she will be an ambassador for the racecourse, will take part in a Sunday Express fashion feature and be photographed by the Models 1 agency. These images will be used in marketing material for the 2010 Royal meeting.

Callie is the second Face of Ascot winner following American Julie Falconer who was the face of 2009. The event has subsequently been enhanced by a new partnership with fashion retailer Karen Millen.

The judges for this year’s competition were Jeff Banks, former presenter of the Clothes Show, Trudy LeMaire, fashion editor of the Sunday Express, James Sherwood, a fashion expert who has been such a feature of the BBC’s Royal Ascot coverage, and Karen Diamond, a director of Models 1.
