RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
FOURTH DAY, FRIDAY, JUNE 19

FIRST RACE WINNING QUOTES
ALBANY STAKES (GROUP 3)

HABAAYIB IN FRONT

The Ed Dunlop-trained Habaayib held off the 11/8 favourite Lillie Langtry to take the opening Albany Stakes by a length and a half under Richard Hills, leaving connections dreaming of the future.

The winner received bookmaker quotes of 10/1 and 12/1 for next year’s 1000 Guineas and Dunlop sees her as a long-term prospect.

“She’s got a lot of scope and I said to Richard (Hills) that today was not the be-all and end-all,” said Dunlop. “I’ve no idea where we’ll go now but she won’t be over-raced this year. She’s got plenty of speed but I don’t know how far she’ll stay.

"We always wanted to take our time with her today - we thought that they would go very fast. We toyed with the Queen Mary Stakes or this race and there was much discussion, as you could imagine, but Richard was very adamant about coming here and he was proved right. Like (when winning on Fareer) yesterday, he gave her a great ride.

"She can quicken and she travels well. In her homework, she does everything beautifully, hits the front and then pricks her ears, so you never quite know what you have got, and she probably actually hit the front too soon.

"It's a great result. I have never had a two-year-old winner at Royal Ascot, so it's great."

Jockey Richard Hills added: "I went and sat on her during the week and I never really doubted her speed. I felt that if I could retain that speed to get six furlongs then she would have a good turn of foot.

"The plan was to take our time and I rode her like a filly for the future, really. But from halfway, when I just started to pick them up, I got there a lot sooner then I wanted to and, full credit to her, she kept going.

"It’s early days with her. She has won at Royal Ascot and we will take each race as it comes. She’s a nice filly and she’s going to keep on improving. She’s a filly that is going places and she has shown a lot at home.”

First Race - The Albany Stakes - Placed Quotes

LILLIE ALMOST CENTRE STAGE

Aidan O’Brien, still basking in the afterglow of Yeats’ victory yesterday and accompanied by winning jockey Johnny Murtagh (in tails rather than silks), was “delighted” with the performance of his filly Lillie Langtry, who was second to Habaayib in the day’s opener, the Albany Stakes.

“It was a great run and she wouldn’t mind stepping up, but she’s still got plenty of speed,” said O’Brien, of the 15/8 favourite.

Henry Cecil was similarly upbeat about the perfomance of his filly, Chachamaidee who, he felt, was “more immature” than a lot of the fillies in the race.

“She’s a bit of a baby and I’m very pleased. I would have been delighted if she had been in the first four, and she was third,” said Cecil.

As with O’Brien, Richard Fahey was going to be smiling whatever happened in the first race today, for the Malton trainer had his second Royal Ascot winner with Cosmic Sun yesterday.

Fahey’s filly, She’s A Character, who was so impressive in her debut at Doncaster, stepped up on that with a fine run to be fourth.

“I’m very pleased with that. She’s bred to stay and that [six furlongs] was the bare minimum. We’ll go quietly with her now,” said Fahey.

First race - Albany Stakes

‘FAST, SAFE GROUND’ SAY JOCKEYS

Jockeys who rode in the opening race, the Albany Stakes, on day four of Royal Ascot reported the ground as generally fast, but safe.

Winning jockey Richard Hills described the going as, “Good to firm,” while Tom Queally who rode third-placed Chachamaidee, said: “It’s on the quick side, but it feels safe.”

Neil Callan said: “It’s quicker than it’s been all week, but it’s safe and good fast ground.”

Ted Durcan: “It’s lovely ground. It’s quicker than it was yesterday - it’s livening up, but it’s lovely ground.”

Frankie Dettori said: “It’s perfect ground.”

Seb Sanders said: “It’s beautiful ground.”

Eddie Ahern said: “It’s lovely racing ground, and no different from yesterday.”

Jimmy Quinn said: “It’s good, fast ground.”

John Velasquez said: “The ground’s fine.”

Sam Hitchcott said: “It’s good, fast ground.”

Daniel Tudhope said: “It’s good, quick ground.”

AEGEAN ALL AT SEA ON COURSE

US challenger Aegean, strongly fancied to win the Albany Stakes for fillies, could do no better than ninth.

Jockey John Velasquez said: “I don’t think she handled the course - she was well and in hand for the first part of the race, but when I let go and tried to keep my position she was not going anywhere.

“The ground was fine, and I’m not using that as an excuse, but my filly didn’t really like it.”

Another leading contender, Godolphin representative Sweet Sonnet, finished one place ahead of Aegean, but jockey Frankie Dettori hinted that she would improve in time.

Dettori said: “She ran solid, but she’s still a bit weak and I would think Ascot has just come a bit quick for her.”

AIDAN O’BRIEN REFLECTS ON YEATS

Aidan O’Brien, the trainer of record-breaking Yeats who won the Gold Cup yesterday for the fourth time, reported his charge to be fine this morning.

He said today: "It was a great day yesterday.

"It was the biggest pressure of all because everybody wanted Yeats to win and if it hadn’t happened then it would have been a downer for everybody.

"It is marvellous - those days happen very rarely and probably a day like that will never happen again in my lifetime."

Second Race - The King Edward VII - Winners’ Quotes

FATHER TIME - 71 FOR CECIL

Henry Cecil, having been stuck on 70 for seven long years, registered his 71st and one of his most emphatic Royal Ascot victories when Father Time, one of two Cecil horses in the King Edward VI Stakes, powered home for an emphatic four length victory over Your Old Pal.

“I want to get to a 100, but having a few flat years...it takes a bit of catching up. I’ve still got quite a lot to do,” said Cecil.

Coming into the race the trainer had been hopeful, that either Father Time, ridden by Eddie Ahern, or Native Ruler, with Tom Queally on board, would come up trumps.

“I thought that both horses had good chances and that this was my best chance of the week - one or other of them,” said Cecil, who added, “It’s worth thinking about the St Leger, isn’t it? I hadn’t really thought about but you can think about it now.

“At home, he’s quite sort of laid back. He works nicely but he’s taken quite a long time - he’s a bit of a baby - to come to himself. He’s very athletic for a horse. He used to carry his head quite high which is why we put a crossed-noseband on him.

“He wants a trip and he’s a funny little horse - he’s an own brother to Passage Of Time, who didn’t really get a mile and a half but he looks like he gets it really well. He’s got a lot of potential. Hopefully he’ll go on from here.

“It’s always good to win at Royal Ascot and they have been running well this week - some seconds and thirds and fourths. You have to have the best horses to win at Ascot - you don’t win here with second best and even if you give your best, it’s may not be good enough,” said Cecil.

There was, as ever, rapturous applause when Cecil entered the winning enclosure: “The public has always been very good to me and perhaps I have fallen in love with them as well.”

Asked about his health, the trainer said : Healthwise, I am not tip-top, but I am still alive, aren’t I?”

Jockey Eddie Ahern said: “They went a really good gallop, which he definitely likes, and it was a good draw. I was going through the race and I came off the rail like Mr Cecil wanted me to do. At the mile and a half start, it goes downhill and we were going pretty quick down there. Up the back straight they were going very, very quick. And there was a stage where I wanted to get a little closer. With those Aidan O’Brien horses, you have to be careful as they might get away. But Richard Hughes said to me, ‘Don’t go yet, they’re going too quick’, so I have to thank him.

“My horse wasn’t stopping going to the line. He was galloping all of the way and after line he galloped on really well so I am sure that a mile and six furlongs is not a problem.”

RAFFLES ENJOYS THE OLD PALS ACT

The Jeremy Noseda-trained Your Old Pal could not match winner Father Time in the King Edward VII Stakes, but he ran a blinder to take second and was greeted in the winner’s enclosure by his enthusiastic owners, Raffles Racing.

Noseda said: “He ran a solid race, I’ve no complaints - in fact I’m delighted. We came here thinking that if he stayed the trip he might finish third or fourth and he’s finished second, so that’s great.

“That’s as good as he’s run in any race, and while it’s nice to win I’m more than happy. The horse has done everything I could have asked.”

Asked for future plans, Noseda said: “The Gordon Stakes [at Glorious Goodwood] is an obvious one to look at, and I’ve had the mile-and-a-quarter Secretariat Stakes at the Arlington Million weekend in mind. We’ll sit down with the team and discuss it.”

Of Raffles Racing, Noseda said: “They are a bunch of young lads enjoying their first time in racing on their own account, and one of the most critical things is that they have some fun.

“Henry St George, whose father [Edward] was a major patron of mine, put the group together - they came to me with a view to buying a horse at the breeze-up sales and so I went along with [bloodstock agent] Jamie McCalmont, but kept getting outbid.

“Willie Browne [of Ireland’s Mocklershill Stud] had a horse that failed to go through the ring after suffering a little setback, and he said ‘Take him for a month and if you like him keep him, if not send him back. We agreed a price. I took the and the arrangement worked out well, because it turned out to be Your Old Pal.

“It was a bit like having a car to drive for a month to see if you like it - I’m grateful to Willie for that, but you need a bit of luck.”

Ballydoyle’s Aidan O’Brien and jockey Colm O’Donoghue were not disappointed with third-placed Black Bear Island.

O’Donoghue said: “We’ve no complaints - he ran a blinder and kept on going right to the line,” while O’Brien said: “He’s had two back-to-back hard races and will probably be put away until the autumn.”

Hanagan’s four-day ban

Paul Hanagan was banned for four days after riding She’s A Character in the Albany Stakes.

He was found guilty of careless riding and will be suspended on July 3, 5, 6 and 7.

Third race - Coronation Stakes - winner’s quotes

EMOTIONS HIGH FOR BARRY HILLS AS GHANAATI WINS CORONATION

A brilliant display and track-record victory by Ghanaati in the Coronation Stakes created a wave of emotions at Royal Ascot today, as the family of trainer Barry Hills celebrated the filly’s success.

Owned and bred by Sheikh Hamdan, Ghanaati won the 1,000 Guineas in April and looked even more impressive today, crossing the line in a time of 1m 38.32s, 0.38 seconds faster than the previous best for Ascot’s round-mile, set by Henrythenavigator in the St James’s Palace Stakes last year.

Hills has been hospitalised for the past five weeks, and the seriousness of his condition - he has been suffering from blood poisoning - was summed up by winning jockey Richard Hills, who said: “I nearly lost my dad - thank God I didn’t. He’s on his way home today. This victory means more to me than any race I’ve ever won. I’m very proud and admit I’ve worn my heart on my sleeve.

“Dad helped me this morning [by phone] when he said ‘keep her safe and she’ll do the rest’ and I kept that in the back of my mind.”

Hills’ brother, Charlie, who is assistant trainer to his father and who has looked after the string at South Bank Stables, said: “Dad left hospital today and is on his way home, although I doubt he saw the race. It’s been lovely to look after so many fine horses, but it’s been a long five weeks.

“Dad had started getting on the phone a bit more lately, so we knew he was improving. He has been suffering from blood poisoning - he had radiotherapy last year [when a throat cancer patient] and still thinks he’s 30!”

Referring to the filly, Charlie said: “She’s still improving and that was only the fourth race of her career.”

Of Ghanaati’s track record, Richard Hills said: “It felt pretty good from where I was sitting. I’ve watched so many runnings of the Coronation Stakes, so to break the record is an honour.

“She felt a lot better today [compared to on the day of the Guineas] and Charlie prepared her beautifully. She’s been giving me a fantastic feel at home and she’s definitely improved. It was a very good race on paper with two other Guineas winners [Again and Elusive Wave] in the field.

“Once the race began to sort itself out I was happy as Larry. It was just a matter of when I was going to let the handbrake off, and when I did she was ready to go. I probably went sooner than ideal, but I could feel her building up and I thought ‘let’s have it’.”

THIRD RACE PLACED QUOTES
CORONATION STAKES (GROUP 1)

LACK OF EXPERIENCE COSTS REGGANE

French raider Reggane put in a great effort when coming from the rear of the Coronation Stakes field to finish second, two lengths behind the winner Ghanaati.

“She paid for her lack of experience and was a bit outpaced early on because when the winner went she had a lot to do,” said the runner-up’s trainer Alain de Royer Dupre.

“She passed a lot of fillies but the race was over by that time. She won’t be going over further than a mile and will probably go for the Prix d’Astarte at Deauville next.”

Trainer John Gosden was delighted with the effort of third-placed Rainbow View. “I’m thrilled with her run and she did find the ground a little fast today.

“She had trouble finding a gap but when she did get through she flew up the straight.

“She had a difficult time on the firm ground (in the 1000 Guineas) at Newmarket and then she has run so well just two weeks on from finishing fourth in the Oaks. I’m delighted that she has showed that she’s trained on well.

“She’ll get a mile and a quarter no problem and should get a mile and a half well later on. The ground makes a huge difference to her, she flies through the soft and I look forward to taking these fillies on again under different conditions.”

Jean-Claude Rouget felt that the French 1,000 Guineas heroine Elusive Wave ran too freely in fourth place.

“She ran a bit fast in the first two furlongs with a bad draw. She couldn’t hide behind horses and lost one or two places. It’s hard to do that all the way,” said Rouget. “She’ll go for the Prix d’Astarte at Deauville next.”

FORTUNE BANNED

Jockey Jimmy Fortune picked up a two-day ban (Friday, July 3 and Sunday, July 5) following his ride on Debussy in the King Edward VII Stakes.

The stewards found Fortune guilty of careless riding by allowing his mount to drift right without correction, causing interference to Hail Caesar and Free Agent.

FOURTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
WOLFERTON HANDICAP (LISTED)

MOORE SUCCESS FOR STOUTE

Perfect Stride is set to step up to Pattern company after beating Moonquake by a neck to win the Wolferton Handicap in a course record time (for the 10-furlong trip) of 2 minutes 3.24 seconds.

Winning trainer Sir Michael Stoute said: “He had an injury when he missed his run in the Craven Stakes last year and then he had another injury when he ran in the Joel Stakes, so he has had little niggles but nothing very serious.

"He has always shown us that he has plenty of ability. He’s a very handsome, fine athlete and we were contemplating going a mile and a quarter earlier than this but we had one or two negative races so we decided to sit tight.

"He gets the trip well and he might go on from here now. We need to get a little more ambitious and probably go for a Group 3.

“It was always going to be competitive today and I think his draw helped because he was always in a good position.

“We’ve had a couple of winners this week and the others have all gone exceptionally well so we’re very happy with how things have gone.”

Jockey Ryan Moore added: "Frankie controlled things from the front and they went quite steady. My horse has probably got a bit more speed than most of them and he was in a good spot to attack them.

"Once my lad got in front he was always doing just enough so I was quite happy with him."

Fourth Race - The Wolferton Handicap - Placed Quotes

MOONQUAKE WORN DOWN

Moonquake’s audacious attempt to make all in the Wolferton Handicap just failed, the Godolphin-owned horse being worn down by the aptly-named Perfect Stride in the final furlong. Moonquake finished just a neck behind the Sir Michael Stoute-trained horse.

“I thought that for a minute we were going to win that,” said trainer Saeed Bin Suroor.

“He ran a great race. He’s a tough horse, but we were beaten by a better horse.”

Salute Him ran on strongly to finish third and pleased his trainer Tony Martin.

The Co. Meath handler said that the six-year-old had not been easy to train. “He’s very strong and I’m delighted with the run.

“He finished well and I’m very happy with that. Hopefully, there’ll be a nice prize for him somewhere,” said Martin.

Fifth race - Queen’s Vase - placed quotes

YANKEE DOODLE FINDS ONE TOO GOOD IN RACE FOR THE VASE

Yankee Doodle had to settle for second behind comfortable winner Holberg in the two-mile Queen’s Vase, but there could be improvement to come from the runner-up, said his trainer, Aidan O’Brien.

After saddling Yeats to win the meeting’s premier long-distance race, yesterday’s Gold Cup - for a record fourth time - O’Brien knows the definition of a good stayer, and he said of Yankee Doodle: “He’s a little bit backward mentally, but he’s getting it together. He should be better next year.”
Ryan Moore, who rode Yankee Doodle, said: “The race went fine - I’ve got no excuses and I think we bumped into a pretty smart stayer.”

Godolphin’s Mastery, who won the Derby Italiano last month and therefore carried a 5lb penalty, finished third, and racing manager Simon Crisford said: “It’s tough over that trip with a 5lb penalty. It will be one step at a time, but he’s definitely in the mix from our stable for the St Leger.”

Frankie Dettori, who rode Mastery, said: “It was a good run, but the [5lb] penalty for being a Group 2 winner was just a bit too much.”

Fifth Race - The Queen’s Vase - Winners Quotes

HOLBERG TOUGHS IT OUT

Mark Johnston has had a slow start to this year’s Royal Ascot, but it finally came good for the Middleham trainer when Holberg’s stamina kicked in and the three-year-old registered Johnston’s fifth success in the Queen’s Vase and his 29th Royal Ascot success overall. For good measure, Holberg recorded a track record (the third of the day).

“I’m really relieved to get one on the sheet. We like to do that early, but it’s been a tough week so far. We’ve certainly not been lucky with the draw, when you consider horses like Lovelace who was clear on the far side and was not even placed - we thought getting a winner would never happen,” said Johnston.

“He went to the Glasgow Stakes [at Hamilton] as an outsider and probably should have done better there. The slow pace was against him and we held him up. So, we kept him for Ascot, either this race or the King George V Handicap.

“We put him in this race because we had horses for the King George V, and to be honest we didn’t expect Mastery to turn up here. We came here and found at the last minute that Mastery was in it. But it turns out, we’ve done better. Clearly the further Holberg goes, the better he is.

“We know it’s a quality performance. Joe [Fanning] said that maybe he’s a [Gold] Cup horse for next year, so we’ll go back home and think about it.”

Fanning said: “They did go a little bit slow but, once I turned into the straight, he came back on the bridle and he stayed on well up the hill. I thought that he would run better than he did at Hamilton but the pace was slow that day and I felt I should have been a bit closer."

BAN FOR FANNING
The winning jockey, Joe Fanning received a four-day suspension for careless riding, after his mount interfered with Dhushan in the home straight. Fanning will be stood down July 3, 5, 6, and 7.

Race six - Buckingham Palace Stakes - winner’s quotes

A GIGANTICUS OCCASION FOR GRATEFUL HILLS FAMILY

An unforgettable day for Lambourn’s Hills family was given a winning conclusion when Giganticus ran out an easy winner of the Buckingham Palace Stakes. The victory meant Barry Hills is now the leading trainer at the meeting with three winners.

Just a few hours after Ghanaati’s Coronation Stakes romp - and happy in the knowledge that the family’s patriarch, Barry Hills, was on his way home after a five-week stay in hospital - the latest member of Team South Bank Stables to enter the number one spot was Michael, who rode six-year-old Giganticus. Michael’s twin brother Richard had partnered Ghanaati, while the day’s runners had been the responsibility of assistant trainer Charlie Hills, Barry’s youngest son.

Michael said of Giganticus: “He does well in the summer and has been working down the handicap. Today, as soon as I began cantering to post, I thought ‘this is the old Giganticus’. I rode him a bit different today and he showed a lovely turn of foot.

“I didn’t want to compete with the other runners all the way, and when I spoke to Dad this morning we agreed to ride him that way. Dad’s just got back home and it’s been a fantastic day for him, but also wonderful for all the staff at the yard. The job they’ve done at home has been unbelievable.”

Charlie Hills said: “It’s been fantastic, and I’m glad for Michael, because he was being left out and now he’s got one in too. This horse has been a great servant over the years - he won the Bunbury Cup two years ago and today the draw was right and he loves the track. He travelled strongly and picked up really well.

“I’ve spoken to Dad briefly since Ghanaati’s race. He watched her race at the hospital and then left straight away, so he’ll be watching a recording at home. It’s great to have winners at Royal Ascot in any race.”

SIXTH RACE PLACED QUOTES
BUCKINGHAM PALACE STAKES (HERITAGE HANDICAP)

AL MUHEER SECOND BEST

The Clive Brittain-trained Al Muheer ran an excellent race in the concluding Buckingham Palace Handicap to finish runner-up, beaten a length and three-quarters by Giganticus.

“He just likes Ascot and his best form is here,” said Brittain. “I think he was just beaten a by a better handicapped horse here but at least my horses have been giving 100 per cent this week.”

Michael Bell, trainer of third-placed Redford, said: “We’re thrilled with the run and he’s back on an upward curve now.”

GROUND - OVERNIGHT WATERING

Chris Stickels, Clerk of the Course, has confirmed that the course will be watered overnight.

“We will put 4mm on the course. The forecasts suggest there is the possibility of some rain tonight, but only a tiny amount. Tomorrow, the weather is forecast to be much as it was today.

“It was pretty quick ground today, but I understand from the jockeys that there wasn’t any jar in the ground,” said Stickels.

CROWD

The crowd figure for the fourth day of Royal Ascot was 53,205. The figure for the same day at the 2008 Royal Ascot meeting was 60,068.

TOTE

Today’s tote on-course cash turnover was £1,315,565, down 16.3 per cent on the same day 12 months ago.

HEFFERNAN STOOD DOWN

Seamus Heffernan, rider of Golden Desert in the concluding Buckingham Palace Handicap has received a suspension for improper riding. The Stewards ruled that, under H9 of the Rules of Racing under the category ‘Use of the Whip’, Heffernan was guilty of using his whip with “excessive frequency”. Heffernan has been stood down for two days; July 3 and 5.

TAKEOVER MISSES GOLDEN JUBILEE STAKES TARGET

Australian sprinter Takeover Target will not run in tomorrow’s Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes.

Trainer Joe Janiak says the ten-year-old gelding is suffering a temperature.

Janiak told racingpost.com: “He is not himself, and his temperature is above normal. It's a shame he'll not be at Ascot, but we'll wrap him up and prepare him for the July Cup at Newmarket.”

A regular feature at the Royal meeting, Takeover Target has appeared six times in the past three years, tackling both the King’s Stand Stakes and Golden Jubilee Stakes. He won the 2006 King’s Stand Stakes and has not been out of the first four in either contest.

Fourteen horses remain in tomorrow’s field.

YANKEE DOODLE FANCIED TO BLOOM IN QUEEN’S VASE

American challenger Aegean is strongly fancied to gain both stars and stripes in today’s opening Albany Stakes (2.30) at Royal Ascot, but he is not the only Yankee Doodle dandy in action today.

Yankee Doodle, a grey colt trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore, tackles the Queens Vase (4.55), a two-mile contest for three-year-olds. A winner at Wexford on his most recent outing, Yankee Doodle is fancied to follow up and his odds have been shrinking this morning.

Cork-based Cashman’s were out of kilter with other layers, and their 14-1 price was soon slashed in half, while Stan James is now 7-1 from 11-1 and Paddy Power cut his odds from 8-1 to 7-1. Totesport’s 8-1 is now 13-2, while in the same contest Power trimmed the Roger Charlton-trained Clowance House from 20-1 to 14-1.

Another O’Brien runner, Lillie Langtry, is now a 6-4 shot from 7-4 with Cashman’s for the Albany Stakes (2.30) in which long-shot Eternal Instinct, trained by Jim Goldie, is now 66-1 from 100-1 with Paddy Power.

Aqwaal (13-2 from 15-2 with Paddy Power and William Hill, and 6-1 from 15-2 with Totesport) is popular in the King Edward VII Stakes (3.05) in which Father Time is now 12-1 from 16-1 with Power, while Wolferton Handicap (4.20) hopeful Stone Of Scone’s 5-1 with William Hill, Totesport, Power and Stan James has been reduced to 7-2.

YEATS’ PICTURE-PERFECT DAY

How the press covered a memorable victory

If a picture ever told a story it was one taken by Scott Heavey of Action Images and used by both The Guardian and The Racing Post. It shows Johnny Murtagh, after the Ascot Gold Cup, head bent forward, brushing the mane of the wonderful Yeats.

“There was such a feeling of happiness. I have never experienced anything like it,” said Murtagh, after dismounting. A beautifully simple and perfectly expressive quote, used by Julian Muscat in The Times.

Muscat made the point that Yeats had “halted time in its tracks” and went on to suggest that Aidan O’Brien would make a fabulous poker player, because on most days he shows little emotion. Yesterday, though, he “quivered with emotion” after the race, and so he should, four successive Gold Cups don’t come along every day, or until yesterday, any day.

Chris McGrath, in The Independent, in one of the few reports to make the news pages (more hats than horses on most page threes) compared Yeats to Sir Steven Redgrave, in the enormity of his achievement. This is a very fair analogy, but does conjure up images of Redgrave rowing to successive Olympic titles with Pinsent on his back. Who’s to say he couldn’t have done it?

Jim McGrath, in The Daily Telegraph, reminded us that Yeats was once the Derby favourite, and The Racing Post goes one better with forgotten facts, noting that Geordieland had once defeated the mighty Yeats, though defeated may be too strong a word, as it was in the 2005 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and Geordieland was eighth, Yeats ninth.

The Daily Mail cast Yeats as ‘The Golden Oldie’ (as do others) which is a touch unfair, given that the life expectancy of a horse is 25 to 30 years, and he’d be considered a baby if he went chasing, not that that’s likely.

The Daily Mirror reckoned that the punters took the bookies for a £6m ride, backing the horse from 5/2 to 6/4. The Daily Star upped the ante, by claiming that the win cost the bookies £10m, and The Daily Express reported the horse’s four Gold Cup wins could have cost the industry £20m.

The Daily Star punned ‘4 he’s jolly good fellow’ as its headline. The Sun was in the same vein with, ‘4 blimey’, which didn’t match up to the paper’s headline for the cricket on page 72, greeting Pakistan’s win in the World Twenty20 Cup, ‘Be Afridi, Be Very Afridi’.

Finally, poetry is writ large in the headlines, which is a bit of a misnomer, given that the horse was not named after William Butler Yeats, who was a poet sans pareil, but his brother, Jack Butler Yeats, who was a renowned painter (that’s artist painter, not painter and decorator). There was a horse called Yeats named after the poet, foaled in 1976 and trained by Vincent O’Brien, and good enough to win a Group Three at Phoenix Park (the racetrack that closed in 1990), but he was no Yeats, not really.
