RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
THIRD DAY, THURSDAY, JUNE 18

Race One Win Quotes - Group Two Norfolk Stakes

RADIOHEAD ROCKS AND ROLLS TO VICTORY

A full broadside a furlong and a half from home in a dramatic renewal of the Group Two Norfolk Stakes was not enough to stop the scintillating forward surge of Radiohead that ended trainer Brian Meehan’s seven-year Royal Ascot drought.

The 10/1 shot was sweeping past rivals with ease down the stands’ side when American pace-setter Yogaroo veered sideways into the Richard Hughes-ridden Monsieur Chevalier, who in turn cannoned into Jamie Spencer’s mount, hampering the momentum of the eventual winner, who landed the spoils by two lengths.
Spencer said: "I thought we had no chance. When you get a bang like that, heading to the furlong pole in a five-furlong group race, then you just think that it’s curtains. I couldn’t believe he was able to get going - it was disbelief that he passed them so quickly towards the end.

"I was shaking my head in the last 100 yards and couldn’t believe it because Richard has hit me side on and generally when that happens the horse gets winded and it’s so hard to get back from it. It’s hard to win races when everything goes right without getting hit like that.

"He hit me side on, broadside, and I had to stop for three or four strides to get him balanced and off Richard’s heels. It’s just surreal, really.

“He wasn’t going half pace in behind, he was going about quarter pace. He’s a fast horse - very fast. I knew the American horse would give me a good lead but I was delighted with the way he picked up. It was hair-raising the way he was passing other horses - surreal. He got wiped out and still won!”

Meehan, whose last Royal Ascot triumph came in the 2002 Queen Mary Stakes with Romantic Liaison, thought all chance of victory had passed.

He said: “It was a tremendous performance by the horse to recover and win the way he did. You have no chance when that happens and I couldn’t believe he was able to get going again. Jamie had him in the right place and was just unlucky to get a knock.

“I looked away because I thought the race was over, then I looked back and he was in front. He was strong enough to take it and the way he picked up and recovered was admirable.”

Radiohead was ponied to the start of the five-furlong contest by his companion Pistolero, who was also on hand at the finish to accompany him off the track.

Meehan revealed: "We tend to keep Radiohead nice and quiet at home and not do too much with him because he’s fairly electrifying.

"The pony is there and you might as well use him. It’s a great thing for these two-year-olds, it takes the edge off them and keeps them relaxed. We did the same with the filly yesterday. The pony’s there, he’s good at it and it seems the ideal thing to do."

“It was always very clear that he was a stakes horse. The thing about Royal Ascot is that they have to develop very quickly. It was pretty clear around March time that he was going to be one for here.

“It’s always a tough meeting for us - it’s been a while since we had a winner here.”

The Johannesburg colt, owned by Carmen Burrell and Jonathan Harvey, could make his next start at Maisons-Laffitte in France.

Meehan continued: “We’re going to have a lot of fun with him now. It was nice to win like he did because now we can go and take on those nice two-year-olds that have won here. The Prix Robert Papin looks a possibility but I’ll talk to Jamie first and see what he says.”

FIRST RACE PLACED QUOTES
NORFOLK STAKES (GROUP 2)

REIGNIER DELIGHTS BURKE

A last-minute decision by trainer Karl Burke to enter Reignier in the Norfolk Stakes paid off when the Kheleyf colt finished an excellent second, beaten two lengths by Radiohead.

“I was tracking the entries closing for this race and saw there were only 10 in there so I put him in, but I was hoping for fifth or sixth place so am delighted,” said Burke.

“I’ve always liked him a lot and he only cost £25,000. The key with him is the ground, last time when he was second at Musselburgh they were just taking the top off it and he didn’t like that at all.

“I still own part of him and he’s for sale. We’ll take him home and have a think but I’ve no real plans for him.”

Mick Channon, trainer of third-placed Tawaabb, said: “I’m delighted and have no complaints. There’s more improvement to come and he can go for some nice races, I’m not bothered whether they are over five or six.”

NO ACTION AGAINST VELAZQUEZ

The stewards enquired into interference in the race. John Velazquez’s mount Yogaroo was found to have reacted to Andrew Elliott’s whip on Reignier and that the ensuing collision when he went sharply left into Monsieur Chevalier who in turn bumped the winner Radiohead was accidental. No further action was taken.

Velazquez felt his mount didn’t handle the course and said: “He was having a hard time getting hold of the track and he wasn’t too happy with it.”

JOCKEYS’ VERDICTS ON THE GROUND AFTER FIRST RACE

Paul Mulrennan, rider of Kingdom Of Light: “It’s really lovely ground.”

Andrew Elliott, rider of second-placed Reignier: “It’s very good, it’s nice ground.”

John Egan, rider of Star Rover: “It’s good ground.”

Neil Callan, rider of Here Now And Why: “It’s good, fast ground and it’s been the same all week.”

SECOND RACE WINNING QUOTES
RIBBLESDALE STAKES (GROUP 2)

GODOLPHIN FLYING AGAIN

After a quiet season, Godolphin and jockey Frankie Dettori bounced back with a four-length success from the unbeaten Flying Cloud in the Group Two Ribblesdale Stakes.

Trainer Saeed bin Suroor said: “She was a Group 3 winner in France and working well before the race which gave us the confidence to run her here.

“She’s a very honest, tough filly with a good turn of foot and I think she is still progressing so she’d possibly go for the Irish Oaks now, we’ll keep our options open.

“She joined us (from Andre Fabre in France) after her last win and has been with us in Newmarket for six weeks.”

Reflecting on the season, bin Suroor added: “It’s very hard to win races at Royal Ascot, the key is to have the right horses, and that is why our stable is sometimes quiet.

“The horses we have been running in Classics and Group 1s have proved not really good enough but things will get changed and they will run in races that they will hopefully be able to win.”

Godolphin’s racing manager Simon Crisford added: “We were not so hopeful beforehand because we thought the ground might be a bit quick and the French form was hard to weigh up.

“So we were not overly confident but she’s proved to be a nice progressive filly who is going the right way.”

After performing his trademark flying dismount, Frankie Dettori added: “The first two days of Royal Ascot were a bit frustrating - Alexandros was unfortunately a little bit lame - but my best rides are on Friday and Saturday. This is a real tonic for the whole team.

“The whole weighing room had been giving me a lot of stick this week, especially Jamie Spencer, and even my driver told me that we would need an estate car tomorrow because my lip was getting bigger.

“I can’t stress enough how lucky Ascot has been to me and I’m delighted this win means I join Michael Kinane on 41 winners at Royal Ascot.

“This filly has shown a great turn of foot and is very gutsy, she’s won three from three and is going from strength to strength.

"She actually surprised me and she should be a candidate for the Darley Irish Oaks. I think that a mile and half is spot on for her now and I think that she wouldn’t want the ground any quicker than this - a bit of rain would help her.

"She’s small, gutsy, determined and showed a great turn of foot. She’s won by four lengths and is a very good filly.”

Godolphin’s founder Sheikh Mohammed added: “Royal Ascot is always great racing with all of these nice people here and it is great to have a winner here.

"Flying Cloud won twice for Andre Fabre and we thought that she was good enough to join Godolphin. I think the Darley Irish Oaks could be the race for her now."

Flying Cloud was quoted at 3/1 for the Darley Irish Oaks by Cashmans.

Second race - The Ribblesdale Stakes - placed quotes

CECIL ‘DELIGHTED IN DEFEAT’
Flame of Gibraltar could not reel in the winner Flying Cloud but nevertheless posted a performance to please her trainer Henry Cecil when finishing second by four lengths in the Ribblesdale Stakes.

“She’s still a baby and she had a bad curb (a spur of bone on the back of the hindleg below the hock) last year but she’s improving all the time,” said Cecil.

“Touch wood, she’ll go on improving. She’s a nice filly. I would have been delighted if she’d finished anywhere in the first four today. It’s a big step up. She had this very bad curb last year and normally when they have a curb they don’t go lame but she was so lame with it for months and she’s only just coming to herself now.

“So, I’m delighted - delighted in defeat.”

William Knight, trainer of the third-placed Uvinza, said: “Being realistic, the plan was just to try to get some black type and that’s what we’ve done. She’s stepped up to a mile and a half and has definitely improved.

“She’s a big filly and I think she will be even stronger next year. I’m sure her owners, who also bred her, are game, so I’m sure they’d want to keep her in training.”

THIRD RACE WINNING QUOTES
THE GOLD CUP (GROUP 1)

YEATS INITIAL QUOTES

After Yeats created history when becoming the first four-time winner of the Gold Cup, his trainer Aidan O’Brien said: "It’s unbelievable, that’s all I can say. I was so sick all morning because I really believed that this couldn’t happen.

“History is very hard to change and we knew that we had a wonderful horse but usually fairytales don’t come true - you dream and dream and dream.

"I felt that we were in a position that we would never ever be in again and I remembered back to when Istabraq was there and the way things can happen - it’s unbelievable.

"I just have to say a big thanks to everybody involved with him. The people who have been involved with him have been unbelievable - everyone that rode him on the way up and Johnny today was unbelievable. The amount of pressure on his shoulders and the way he handled it, rode him , how early he committed him - he was so positive, I couldn’t believe it.

"In March and April, our horses were running ordinary and getting tired. A little bit of light appeared in the first week of May and ever since then they have progressed. It’s a big credit to the people who are directly involved with him every day and I think that they are the people that all the credit goes to.

"He’s an unbelievable horse and we knew that we would never get another one like him. To see Johnny ride him with such confidence under such pressure - I don’t think that I have ever felt pressure for any race ever before like this horse.

"The only time that I felt pressure like this was with Istabraq and they are very unique horses. To win four Gold Cups - I can’t describe it"

Jockey Johnny Murtagh added: "He’s the greatest. Muhammed Ali said he was the greatest and he was, and today Yeats has showed everybody today that he is the ultimate heavyweight champion.

"The was no doubt today. Aidan told me after Navan that he would be grand for Ascot. We kept saying the ground was too soft at Navan and you guys didn’t believe it - you were trying to pick holes in him.

"He loves fast ground and he loves Royal Ascot. He comes to life here and Aidan said after Navan that he would be ready for Royal Ascot.

"It’s one of the greatest days of my life in racing. I have had a good week, but for the horse to win four Gold Cups. The crowd came out in force and it’s good for racing - Yeats is everything positive about racing.”

John Magnier, whose wife Sue owns Yeats with Diane Nagle, is in no rush to take a decision on whether the history-making Yeats will retire after his victory.

“It doesn’t get any better than this for obvious reasons and we will enjoy today,” said Magnier. “We are not going to rush into any decisions and there’s no point saying something today and then doing something else.”

Yeats’ groom David Hickey was understandably delighted. “I’ve looked after him for over five years and he’s just been an unbelievable tonight. I will be celebrating this evening with a bit of party, you’ve got to enjoy something like this but I don’t drink so I’ll just be having a coke tonight.”

Third race - The Gold Cup - winner’s quotes

O’BRIEN SALUTES HIS ‘UNIQUE HORSE’ AS YEATS GALLOPS INTO HISTORY BOOKS

It was the result that racegoers had flocked to Royal Ascot to see and Yeats did not disappoint his legion of fans, striding out for the line from the home turn under Johnny Murtagh to record an historic fourth consecutive win in the Ascot Gold Cup. His three-and-a-half length victory was a body blow to the bookies with the extraordinary eight-year-old starting as 6/4 favourite after being backed down from 5/2.

Visibly shell-shocked, trainer Aidan O’Brien paid tribute to his staying star, saying: “It’s unbelievable - that’s all I can say. It’s a dream. All morning I was feeling so sick - I was just thinking that this couldn’t happen. He’s an unbelievable, amazing horse. He’s gone very lazy and clever in his work at home. He’s made of different stuff and I just can’t believe it - of course he’s only flesh and blood but to do this four times.”

He continued: “Johnny gave him an unbelievable ride with such confidence. The pressure he must have been under but he had it worked out in his head how he wanted to do it and where he wanted to go. Going for home early in a race like this takes some doing.

“The only time I’ve felt this much pressure was with (three-time Champion Hurdler) Istabraq and when we got over him I thought it would never happen again but this was like Istabraq. Obviously he was going back for his fourth Champion Hurdle and we know what happened, and then his fifth, and it didn’t happen. I was afraid of the disappointment for everybody if this didn’t happen.

“It’s not for no reason that this has never been done before. This is just a unique horse.”

In typically self-effacing fashion, the trainer added: “I can’t tell you how privileged I feel: it’s the people who are directly involved that make it happen - like the lad who rides him every day, Davey (Hickey) who looks after him, and Johnny, who rides him in his races, the people who deal with him directly every day. I’m just standing back watching it but obviously for myself and Anne-Marie and all the lads and everybody at Ballydoyle, we just feel so privileged to be involved with this horse.”

On the subject of whether Yeats would return to contest a fifth Gold Cup next year, O’Brien was pessimistic, saying: “I don’t think so - it’s not my decision but the genes he has and the fact that it’s proven at home that his lung capacity is way greater than any other horse make it unlikely. If anything was ever to happen to him we know we can’t replace him. He’s not a gelding so we can tap into those genes. Sue (Magnier) and the boss and David and Diane (Nagle) will make the decision but he’s so unique I would be afraid of racing him after this.

“For everybody this means more than anything. It’s something that’s never been done before. If you started to dream about it you’d say ‘just pull yourself together and don’t be dreaming nonsense, that’s ridiculous’ and that’s the feeling of a morning. Everyone’s been saying this was going to happen but these things don’t happen and this is a very, very special day.”

Asked how he planned to celebrate, O’Brien replied: “I’ll just follow the crowd and sit in behind. I’m not going to make the running this time.”

Third race - The Gold Cup - winner’s quotes

MAGNIER: ‘IT DOESN’T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS’

Coolmore supremo John Magnier and his wife Sue co-own Yeats with the horse’s breeders David and Diane Nagle. While Sue was watching from home in Ireland with her mother Jacqueline O’Brien, her husband was at Ascot to witness Yeats’ history-making fourth Gold Cup win.

“We’re all delighted and proud to be associated with him but you can see that the people genuinely like this horse so we’re lucky for once that we didn’t send him off to stud when he was three or four. It’s great the way it’s all worked out,” said Magnier.

“I think Aidan was of the view that with an eight-year-old horse you can only ask him so many questions so many times. I think he was very much pointing him at this race and it wasn’t until his last two pieces of work that we really started getting the good vibes from Aidan.

“Even before the race I walked the course with Aidan and said ‘what do you think?’ and he said ‘he’s never been better’ and he really believed it. It looks like it’s getting easier for Yeats every year which is amazing.”

Asked whether the son of Sadler’s Wells would now be retired for a career at stud, he said:
“We’ll have to have a word with David and see what he and Diane want to do and see what the vets think but history was against him coming here today - he’s an eight-year-old horse and we just want to do the right thing for him now as well as for the game. There comes a time when it’s not right for them to go on any more and I wouldn’t want to say one way or the other for the moment.”

As to his targets for the remainder of the season, Magnier suggested a possible tilt at the Goodwood Cup, saying: “Why would you stop now with a horse that’s enjoying himself like he has done today? The people love seeing him and we love going racing with him. We’d have to think about Goodwood where they look after us very well too.

“It doesn’t get any better than this. He’s been around a long time and we see a lot of him. It’s as good as it gets in this game. To get a horse ready at this time in his life - and he’s a colt, not a gelding - is some training performance.”

Referring to Yeats’ prospect as a stallion on the Coolmore roster, Magnier added: “Not everybody wants to use Gold Cup winners but we need stamina in the stud as well and he’s special. I know that there are some serious breeders that have said to me that they want to use this horse. He will get the chance at stud, that’s for sure, so if he’s good enough, he’ll come through it, if he’s not, he won’t.”

Third race - The Gold Cup - winner’s quotes

MURTAGH PRAISES ASCOT, A SPECIAL PLACE

Jockey Johnny Murtagh, who has been aboard Yeats for his last two Gold Cup victories, said of today’s win: “I felt something very special going past the line - the brewing of the crowd for the last furlong carried the horse home. I’ve never experienced anything like it. It’s probably the greatest day of my racing career.

“I wasn’t nervous - I was confident in the horse. Seamus (Heffernan) rides him work all the time and he said ‘he’s just coming’ and then I rode him one day last week and I was very impressed - he doesn’t feel like an eight-year-old, he felt much the same as he did last year.”

Murtagh, who was leading jockey at last year’s meeting and is heading the list again this year, added: “He’s a very uncomplicated horse - we dropped in behind Frankie (on Veracity) and I rode him much the same way as I did last year. I wanted to really put it up to them so I asked him early and he came home well. Halfway up the straight I could sense them coming and so could he and he just went on again.

“I sensed the crowd and I knew they felt this was something special but this is a special place. The world is in turmoil at the moment but when you see the crowd and you see people’s faces when the horses come back into the parade ring there’s such a feeling of happiness. If you could bottle it, it would be something special.

“Everything that’s good in racing was on show today.”

BOOKIES ON YEATS

Yeats costs bookies £20 million over four years and becomes most expensive Royal Ascot horse in betting history according to Ladbrokes

David Williams of Ladbrokes said: “Yeats has cost the bookies more money than any horse in Royal Ascot history. They'll have to erect a statue but there's no way we can afford to pay for it now!

“When Yeats hit the front we heard the roar and our hearts sank. He was once again backed off the boards and there's not much more we can now do other than grit out teeth and salute a racing legend.”

Yeats' historic fourth Gold Cup victory at Royal Ascot today has left Paddy Power short of a few quid, but the bookies are paying out with a smile on their face rather than through gritted teeth.

Paddy Power himself explained: “We’ve paid out about 1.5 million, but I've never been happier to do my dough. It's one of the worst results of the year but it was well worth it for all of us to see history being made.

“We're so far behind for the week it's incredible - we’re going to have to come from about four furlongs back to catch the punters now. Yeats has probably left us with too much to do, but with a couple of days still to go we’ll keep up the battle with a little prayer along the way!”

Yeats was elevated to living legend status at Royal Ascot on Thursday by entering the record books with a fourth consecutive Ascot Gold Cup success on Ladies’ Day says Sky Bet.

Aidan O’Brien’s eight-year-old, who is the oldest horse in training at Ballydoyle, piled on the woe for the bookmakers at the meeting after a series of bad results over the first two days.

Backed in from 2/1 with Sky Bet in the morning, Yeats was sent off a heavily supported 6/4 favourite. The Harrogate-based firm reports it was by far their worst result of the meeting so far.

Matt Doyle of Sky Bet said: ‘The public have really taken the old warhorse to their hearts and he was backed to the exclusion of all others. The gamble has been a knockout blow industry-wide for bookmakers.’

Although he is rising nine, the Coolmore team have not ruled out Yeats returning to Ascot next year to defend his staying crown and Sky Bet offer 5/1 for the ‘famous five’ bid.

RACE THREE PLACE QUOTES
THE GOLD CUP (GROUP 1)

BEATEN CONNECTIONS REFLECT ON YEATS’ VICTORY
As Yeats tightened his grip on the Gold Cup with an unprecedented fourth triumph in the two and a half-mile contest, connections of the placed horses were left to reflect.

Patkai, a 9/2 chance, emerged as a pretender to the crown when winning the Group Three Sagaro Stakes over two miles at Ascot in April, but such pretensions will have to wait until next year after the four-year-old was put in his place by the master stayer.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained colt, ridden by champion jockey Ryan Moore, gamely chased Yeats down the home straight but had to settle for the runner-up berth, three and a half lengths behind the winner.

Peter Reynolds, racing manager to owners Ballymacoll Stud, said: “He ran a very brave race. He just ran a little freely down to the start but he showed he stayed and was beaten by a very good horse. It was absolutely no disgrace to be second to Yeats and he has beaten the rest fairly well.

“He’s a lovely horse to have and he likes Ascot but I don’t know what the plans are now.”

Cashmans make Patkai 3/1 favourite for the 2010 Gold Cup.

Geordieland finished second to Yeats in 2007 and 2008. Connections of the eight-year-old grey came into the race with expectations high after defeating Patkai in the Group Two Henry II Stakes at Sandown in May, but they were dashed as Jamie Osborne’s charge finished third, a further 15 lengths back.

Osborne said: “I’m disappointed but I’ve only seen the race once and I’d like to go back and look at it. It was a great performance by the winner.”

Saeed bin Suroor, trainer of fourth-placed Sagara, said: “Sagara ran a good race but our horses weren’t good enough.”

Ahmed Ajtebi, rider of another of Suroor’s three charges, fifth-placed Eastern Anthem commented: “I think a drop in trip will suit him better.”

Frankie Dettori took the ride on the pulled-up Suroor hope Veracity and revealed: “He was very lame so I pulled him up and I thought he had damaged his off-fore knee, but he was able to walk into the box, so hopefully it’s not too bad.”

Race Four Win Quotes - Britannia Handicap

DUNLOP LOVES IT WHEN A PLAN COMES TOGETHER

It was a case of mission accomplished after the Britannia Handicap as Fareer and Richard Hills brought to fulfilment a plan hatched by trainer Ed Dunlop.

The mile handicap had been on the Bahamian Bounty colt’s agenda all season, so connections were understandably relieved when the judge called him the winner by a head in a four-way blanket finish.

Hills executed a perfect ride aboard the Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned Fareer, bringing the colt from the rear with a sustained run that saw him take the lead inside the distance. The pair survived a slight scare close home when the 20/1 shot drifted left, but were able to hang on for victory.

Dunlop revealed: “This has been the plan all year and it worked. The ground was too soft at Haydock last time and we probably shouldn’t have run him that day. He won well at Chester the time before on ground he likes and we said then that this was the race.

“I told Richard to do what he liked - the only plan was to hold him up because we know he can quicken and he did a great job.

“He looked to be the only one on the near side to quicken. He was on his own but he did it well and although he wandered around a bit, he picked up well and it was fantastic.

“It’s great to win here, it’s like having 20 winners anywhere else and is fantastic for the yard. Richard gave him a great ride.”

Hills said: “We had this race in mind for a long time. The plan was to drop him in; the horse has been improving slowly and we always felt he would stay a mile. We just felt we had to ride him conservatively.

“Luckily, the splits came and it certainly helps when you have a horse under you that travels like that. He just lost a bit of concentration in the last little bit. I thought we had won but I just wasn’t sure.

“Most of the jockeys wanted to be drawn very low but you are where you are and that’s it. It was going to be a fast race, it usually is, and I asked Sheikh Hamdan if I could take my time and just get a bit of luck. This horse has a good finish and we have had this race in mind for quite a while and he did well.

"You have to ride your race with the horses in front and you can’t be worrying about what’s going on at the other side. You just look up and see if you are in front at the end. You can only ride one race - you can’t ride to sides of the track - and I was always going to go left.

"It’s great here. Yesterday was fantastic for my father, a great tonic, and he will be watching now. He will be proud and Penny can open the fridge now."

FOURTH RACE PLACED QUOTES
BRITANNIA STAKES (HANDICAP)

SECRET SECOND IN BLANKET FINISH

There was a four-way photo in a great finish to the Britannia Handicap and connections of runner-up Secret Society and third-placed Mirrored were delighted with their representatives.

Michael Bell, trainer of Secret Society, said: “He’s an improving horse and that was a very good run. He’s a high-class mile handicapper and there is probably something for him at the Newmarket July Meeting but he has had a hard race.”

Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to Mirrored’s owner Khalid Abdulla, added: “He’s run a super race and, I know it’s a cliche, but he won the race on his side. He’ll keep going in those good handicaps and might run at Goodwood.”

FIFTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
HAMPTON COURT STAKES (LISTED)

GLASS HARMONIUM SURVIVES STEWARDS’ ENQUIRY

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Glass Harmonium survived a lengthy stewards enquiry to take the Listed Hampton Court Stakes under Ryan Moore.

"The horses have been running well this week and have been beaten fair and square,” said Stoute.

"He’s a horse that we have always liked and we supplemented him for the Derby in March because we thought that there was a possibility of it but, after the Dante, the plan was to come here. He’s now a stakes winner and a fair standard of horse.”

Peter Reynolds, manager of owners Ballymacoll Stud, added: “We don’t spend money (supplementing a horse) unless there is a good reason and he’s still in the Irish Derby although I doubt we will go there.

“This was more like a Group 3 than a Listed race and I think the ground was probably a bit livelier than he would have wanted today.”

RACE FIVE PLACE QUOTES
HAMPTON COURT STAKES (LISTED)

CASHELGAR AND MONITOR CLOSELY FILL THE PLACES

Sir Robert Ogden purchased Cashelgar after the lightly-raced colt broke his maiden at Saint-Cloud last month and was almost rewarded with a Royal Ascot victory in the 10-furlong Hampton Court Stakes.

Alain de Royer-Dupre’s charge, a 20/1 outsider, went down by only half a length after being squeezed against the rail by the victorious Glass Harmonium. The winner survived a lengthy Stewards’ Enquiry.

The trainer commented: “He ran a little bit green and ran well - he just touched the other one. Sir Robert bought him recently and he is a nice horse.”

Peter Chapple-Hyam was pleased with the effort of 15/2 chance Monitor Closely in finishing third, five lengths behind the winner. The Newmarket trainer feels that a step up in trip may be on the cards for the colt, who was fourth in the Group Two Dante Stakes at York on his previous start.

He said: “The horse ran very well and is probably crying out for a mile and a half. Even though he’s by Oasis Dream, I think he just lacks that kick at the end over this trip.

“I knew he’d improved from the Dante and he hasn’t missed a beat all season. He likes this ground and I might look at taking him to France for a race.”

Sixth race - The King George V Handicap - winner’s quotes

SUN SHINES FOR FAHEY AND HANAGAN IN THE FINALE

Cosmic Sun, a 66/1 outsider, ran home the length and a quarter winner of the King George V Handicap to bring the curtain down on Thursday’s action at Royal Ascot. Continuing the excellent form of trainer Richard Fahey’s stable of late, Cosmic Sun shed his maiden tag in fine style to give jockey Paul Hanagan his first success at the Royal Meeting.

Fahey, whose sole previous victory at Royal Ascot came with Superior Premium in the Cork & Orrery Stakes of 2000, said: “I always thought he’d stay - we fancied him the other day at Musselburgh but he tried to run out at the turn. I’ve always felt he was a nice horse and this is a special day - it’s always great to have a winner and it’s great for the owners.”

Winning jockey Paul Hanagan nearly didn’t make it to Royal Ascot after he was kicked by a horse in the paddock at York on Saturday, so he was naturally greatly relieved to have been given the all clear to resume riding.

He said: “The first thing that went through my head when I was lying on the floor was Ascot. It wasn’t very nice but I’ve had some good physiotherapy and I was lucky that I was kicked in the place I was - any lower and I’d have shattered my kneecap and any higher it would have been my hip.”

He continued: “Just to break my duck at Royal Ascot is an unbelievable feeling. I can’t lie, I didn’t think he’d win, I was just hoping for a good run. Last time he ran was at Musselburgh and he ran out at the bend - it wasn’t malicious, it’s a sharp bend at Musselburgh and he just didn’t handle it but he didn’t put a foot wrong today.

“Everyone comes here and loves to ride winners at Ascot, never mind Royal Ascot, and this is a dream come true.”

RACE SIX PLACE QUOTES - KING GEORGE V HANDICAP

KING CONQUERS BRIDGE IN BATTLE FOR MINOR HONOURS

Chiberta King was no match for 66/1 winner Cosmic Sun in an exciting finale to the King George V Handicap but dug deep to hold third-placed Barwell Bridge and claim the runner-up spot by a nose.

The Andrew Balding-trained 8/1 shot headed to the mile and a half handicap on the back of two victories that ensured he made it into the 19-runner field despite being 1lb out of the handicap.

The Kingsclere trainer said: “I’m very pleased with the horse, he’s improving all the time and there are no excuses, he was beaten by a better horse.

“We were worried that he might not get in but once he did, we were always going to come here for this race. We’ll look at mile and half and staying handicaps for him - there’s one at Goodwood and something like the Melrose at York would be a possibility.

Sylvester Kirk was thrilled with 12/1 chance Barwell Bridge who made the frame for the seventh consecutive time. The Red Ransom colt was stepping up to 12 furlongs for the first time, having landed a 10-furlong handicap at York in May.

Kirk commented: “He has run a blinder. He was on the gas early but settled back on the bridle, found a rhythm and battled back. He’s a tough, genuine, consistent horse.”

GROUND UPDATE
Ascot’s Clerk of the Course Chris Stickels plans to water the track this evening with a dry night forecast.

“I’m going to put four millimetres of water on everything tonight with a view to holding the ground at good to firm. The forecast is to remain dry over the next couple of days with only the chance of a negligible amount of rain” said Stickels.

CROWD
Today’s attendance was 68,921, compared to 74,228 on the same day 12 months ago.

MOORE AND DURCAN BANNED
Following a stewards’ enquiry into the Listed Hampton Court Stakes, winning rider Ryan Moore picked up a four-day suspension.

The stewards looked into two incidents, in the first Moore was found to have caused accidental interference but received his suspension after being found guilty of careless riding in the second incident. His ban will be on July 2, 3, 5 and 6.

Ted Durcan was suspended for three days for careless riding in the Sandringham Handicap. His suspension is on July 2, 3 and 5.

TOTE FIGURES

Today’s tote on-course cash turnover was £1,612,827, down 1.1 per cent on 12 months ago.

Meanwhile, the layers were left celebrating after a decent day put them back on a level playing field with the punters.

“Whilst the second day of the Royal meeting wasn’t as bad as the first, we badly needed a few results to go our way,” said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.

“Yeats aside, it’s definitely been a day for the layers which meant we could join the rest of the country in raising a glass to the staying superstar.”

Totesport still quote Johnny Murtagh as 4/6 favourite to be top jockey at Royal Ascot despite being banned for the final two days of the meeting.

Royal Ascot Top Jockey – totesport bet: 4/6 Johnny Murtagh, 7/2 Ryan Moore, Richard Hughes, 14 Frankie Dettori.

INTERNATIONAL STARS JET IN FOR THE GOLDEN JUBILEE STAKES

J J The Jet Plane has proven himself to be a bona fide flying machine in his South African homeland and Dubai and now Mike de Kock’s speedster is ready for take-off in the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes over six furlongs at Royal Ascot on Saturday.

The Jet Master gelding, one of 15 declared for the £400,000 second British leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, impressed on his sole start in Britain when dismissing five smart rivals for an easy victory in the Listed Up Up And Away Stakes at Windsor on June 1.

Ryan Moore was in the plate that day but Kevin Shea, successful aboard the five-year-old in a Group Three at Nada Al Sheba, Dubai, in February, is reunited with the South African sprinter.

As has become the norm in recent times, the Golden Jubilee has a truly international feel to it with raiders from Australia, Hong Kong, Ireland and the US lining up, as well as a former Greek champion.

Among those is the popular Aussie 10-year-old Takeover Target who makes his fourth start in the race. Successful in the 2006 King’s Stand Stakes, Joe Janiak’s charge finished fourth in the Golden Jubilee Stakes last year, having finished third in 2006 and runner-up two years ago.

Wesley Ward has taken the Royal Meeting by storm with a brace of victories on the first two days and the American is hoping Cannonball can hit the target on Saturday. The four-year-old Catienus gelding ran on late to clinch sixth in the Group One King’s Stand Stakes over five furlongs on Tuesday.

Ward revealed: “We’re all set for Saturday and are making enquiries about a jockey. I couldn’t commit to running the horse on Saturday so consequently John Velazquez has commitments back in the US.”

Hong Kong champion Sacred Kingdom is in fine form for his European debut having defeated the Saeed bin Suroor-trained Diabolical (3rd) and Takeover Target (8th) on his most recent outing in the lucrative Krisflyer International Sprint at Kranji, Singapore.

Irish raider Duff, trained by Edward Lynam, warmed up for this Group One test with success in the Group Three Ballycorus Stakes over a furlong further at Leopardstown on June 11.

Bushranger took high rank among last season’s juveniles following Group One victories in the Darley Prix Morny and Shadwell Middle Park Stakes. The David Wachman-trained colt is one of two three-year-olds bidding to make the grade against some of the best sprinters in the world, the other being the Michael Bell-trained Art Connoisseur.

Leading the home defence against such an array of international talent is last year’s victor, Kingsgate Native. The four-year-old, successful for trainer John Best 12 months ago, retired to stud at the end of last season but fertility issues mean that he has returned to training and has his first outing for Sir Michael Stoute, sporting the Cheveley Park Stud silks.

Greek star Ialysos made a winning debut for Newmarket handler Luca Cumani when defeating King’s Stand Stakes third Anglezarke in a Listed contest at Haydock on May 30.

Karl Burke’s Middleham stable is in fine form at present and he will be hoping Lesson In Humility can maintain her unbeaten start to the season that incorporated a Group Three triumph at Leopardstown on June 4.

King’s Apostle, trained by William Haggas, won the Group Two Diadem Stakes over the course and distance in September, a race in which Diabolical was second and the Jeremy Noseda-trained Strike The Deal a length back in fifth.

The Hughie Morrison-trained Intrepid Jack faces a stiff task after chasing home J J The Jet Plane at Windsor last time, while Regal Parade landed a seven-furlong York conditions race last month.

Cannonball
Home-bred at Ramsey Farm in Kentucky, Cannonball warmed up for the Golden Jubilee Stakes with a staying-on sixth, five and a half lengths behind Scenic Blast in the five-furlong Group One King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot on Tuesday. The gelding made an inauspicious career debut at Belmont Park in May, 2007, when he failed to beat a horse in a five-furlong dirt maiden. He returned to the New York track in September for his third start, recording a four-length victory in a six-furlong turf maiden before following up with another success at the course in a non-graded turf contest over a mile in October. He continued to show improvement on his final juvenile appearance just five days later, keeping on to take third in the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Monmouth Park. Stepped up to Pattern company for his three-year-old debut, Cannonball acquitted himself well by coming third in the nine-furlong turf Grade Three Tropical Park Derby at Calder on New Year’s Day, 2008, and he followed up with another third place over the same trip in a non-graded race on turf at Gulfstream Park in mid-February. Cannonball switched to Polytrack for the Grade Two Lane’s End Stakes at Turfway Park a month later, but could only finish sixth in the nine-furlong contest, and he once again failed to show his true form when seventh on his turf return in the Grade Three Crown Royal American Turf Stakes on May 2 at Churchill Downs. Dropping down in class and trip, Cannonball returned to the winner’s enclosure in a six-furlong turf race at Belmont Park at the end of May but he failed to build on that effort when coming eighth in another minor turf event over a mile at Del Mar in mid-July. Cannonball ended his season with another below-par effort in a non-graded turf contest, when he could only finish third over an extended mile at Saratoga at the start of August. Cannonball began this season with a fourth in a five-furlong allowance race on turf at Gulfstream Park on February 5, and he stepped up on that effort in the Shakertown Stakes at Keeneland on April 11, when he was edged out by a head in the in the extended five-furlong Grade Three turf sprint, with Chamberlain Bridge a further head in arrears. Both the second and third home re-opposed in the Grade Three Aegon Turf Sprint Stakes over five furlongs at Churchill Downs on May 1, when Chamberlain Bridge reversed the form with Cannonball, repelling the late challenge of the Wesley Ward-trained gelding to win by a neck.

Wesley Ward
Born on March 3, 1968, in Saleh, Washington State, Wesley Ward is the grandson of long-serving New York outrider Jim Dailey and the son of former apprentice and trainer Dennis Ward. Ward jnr left school at 14 and moved to New York to ride when he was just 15 and enjoyed a sensational first season, partnering 335 winners and becoming leading jockey at both the Belmont, Aqueduct and Meadowlands fall meetings. Such a meteoric rise to fame was rewarded with Ward receiving the Eclipse Award for leading apprentice when he was just 16. Further spells in Italy, Singapore, Malaysia, Illinois and Canada followed and Ward was in the plate when subsequent Kentucky Derby hero Ferdinand lost his maiden tag in 1985. But a growth spurt and weight problems forced Ward to quit riding in 1989 and he assisted his father for four years prior to starting out on his own in 1993. He celebrated his first Stakes victory as a trainer when Unfinished Symph landed the Grade Three Cinema Handicap at Hollywood Park in June, 1994, and the horse went on to be third in the Grade One Breeders’ Cup Mile that November before going on to further Graded success in the San Francisco Mile and the Shoemaker Breeders’ Cup Mile the following year. Other notable horses to have been trained by Ward include Men’s Exclusive, who earned more than $.104 million in his career and raced in the Sprinter’s Stakes in Japan as well as the Dubai Golden Shaheen (in which he was second in 2001), and Bear Fan, who landed Grade Two victories in the Genuine Risk Handicap and the Vagrancy Handicap in 2004. Ward also trained Pesci, who was third in the Grade One Milady Breeders’ Cup Handicap in June, 2004, for her co-owner and Hollywood actor Joe Pesci, while the trainer was also responsible for One Hot Wish, who set a new world record of 48.87 seconds for 4.5 furlongs on her debut at Keeneland in April, 2007. Based in Glendora, California, Ward also trains at Gulfstream Park, Florida throughout the winter months. Ward brought five two-year-olds to Royal Ascot - Aegean (Albany Stakes), Honor In Peace (Chesham Stakes), Jealous Again (Queen Mary Stakes), Strike The Tiger (Windsor Castle Stakes) and Yogaroo (Norfolk Stakes). He also sent out Cannonball to finish sixth in the King’s Stand Stakes. Ward made history on June 16, 2009,whe he saddled Strike The Tiger to become the first US-trained winner at Royal Ascot. The gelding’s success in the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes was merely the prelude to greater glory however, as the following day, Ward sent out Jealous Again to blitz her rivals in the Group Two Queen Mary Stakes.

Kenneth & Sarah Ramsey
Both Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey grew up in Artemus, Kentucky. After graduating from the University Of Kentucky, Kenneth worked for several trucking firms before trying his hand as an estate agent. Disillusioned with selling houses, he started setting up his own franchises specialising in mobile phones in the late 1980s and soon had a string of stores throughout north-eastern Georgia and south-eastern Kentucky. He sold the business for around $38 million in 1994 and decided to return to his hobby of horseracing. Kenneth had previously had a limited interest in racing, having claimed a horse called Red Redeemer at Louisville in 1969 and briefly held a trainer’s licence before deciding to concentrate on his business interests. In 1994, Kenneth and Sarah purchased the historic Almahurst Farm, birthplace of 1918 Kentucky Derby winner Exterminator, and renamed it Ramsey Farm. The couple have since gone on to enormous success as owners and breeders, headed by the home-bred pair of Kitten’s Joy and Roses In May. In 2004, Kitten’s Joy enjoyed Grade One success in the Secretariat Stakes and the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational Handicap before going on to be second in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Lone Star Park, earning him the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Male Turf Horse. Roses In May also ran at the same Breeders’ Cup meeting, coming second in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, and went on to victory in the Dubai World Cup, the world’s richest race, the following March. More recently, the Ramseys have enjoyed further Grade One success as breeders with Precious Kitten, whose three wins at the highest level included victory in the Matriarch Stakes at Hollywood Park in November, 2007. The Ramseys currently have over 60 horses in training with Bobby Frankel, Mike Maker, Mark Shuman, Ronny Werner, Charlton Baker, Richard Schosberg, Tom Voss and Wesley Ward, while their breeding operation now covers more than 1,200 acres and is home to 161 broodmares as well as the stallions Catienus and Kitten’s Joy.

Corey Nakatani
Born: October 21, 1970, Covina, California Background: One of 10 children, Nakatani’s father Roy, a Japanese American, was born in a World War II internment camp in Colorado and spent time at Santa Anita racecourse when it was an internment camp. A champion high school wrestler, Nakatani actually got his first glimpse of racing after a wrestling tournament. On the way home, he and his father stopped at Santa Anita to watch a couple of races. He learned how to ride on the stud of agent Tony Matos, then broke and galloped horses for Johnny Longden and Longden’s son Eric. After graduating from jockey school in Castaic, California, Nakatani began race-riding at Caliente in Mexico in the fall of 1988. Won his first race there on Blue King in a dead heat. Moved his tack to Southern California in April 1989 and rode 218 winners in his first year there. Has won meet titles at Santa Anita, Hollywood, Del Mar and Oak Tree. Tragedy hit Nakatani hard over a two-year period beginning with the death of a nephew from leukemia in the spring of 1995. His sister, Dawn, died of asphyxiation in an apparent murder in October of 1996, and his father Roy died of a heart attack in the spring of 1997. An avid golfer, Nakatani carries a three handicap. He has won over the course and distance of the Golden Jubilee Stakes, hvaing won the Diadem Stakes on Cool Jazz on September 24, 1995. His big race wins include: Hollywood Derby (1990 Itsallgreektome, 1993 Explosive Red, 1996 Marlin), Coaching Club American Oaks (1991 Lite Light), Kentucky Oaks (1991 Lite Light, 1996 Pike Place Dancer), Yellow Ribbon Stakes (1993 Possibly Perfect), Beverly D Stakes (1995 Possibly Perfect, 2001 England’s Legend), John C Mabee Handicap (1995 Possibly Perfect, 1996 Matiara, 1998 See You Soon, 2006 Dancing Edie), Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes (1997 Yashmak), Beldame Stakes (1998 Sharp Cat), Champagne Stakes (1998 The Groom Is Red), Garden City Breeders' Cup Handicap (1998 Pharatta, 2001 Voodoo Dancer), Santa Anita Handicap (2000General Challenge, 2006 Lava Man, 2007 Lava Man), Frizette Stakes (2004 Balletto), Hollywood Gold Cup (2006 Lava Man, 2007 Lava Man), Sunshine Millions Classic (2006 Lava Man), First Lady Stakes (2007 Vacare), Sunshine Millions Turf (2007 Lava Man), Santa Anita Derby (2008 Colonel John), Princess Rooney Handicap (2008 Mistical Plan), Molson Export Million (1994 Dramatic Gold), Dubai Golden Shaheen (2001 Caller One), Canadian International Stakes (2005 Relaxed Gesture), Breeders' Cup Distaff (1996 Jewel Princess), Breeders' Cup Sprint (1996 Lit De Justice, 1997 Elmhurst, 1998 Reraise, 2006 Thor’s Echo), Breeders' Cup Mile (1999 Silic), Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (2004 Sweet Catomine) First Winner in Britain: Cool Jazz, Diadem Stakes, Ascot, September 24, 1995.

J J The Jet Plane
Named after an American cartoon character, J J The Jet Plane was all the rage for the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot following an impressive four-length victory in the Listed Leisure Stakes at Windsor on June 1. That Thames-side romp over six furlongs was the gelding’s first start in Britain. The South African speedster notched seven victories from 10 starts in his homeland, including three at Grade One level, before competing with mixed success at the Dubai International Racing Carnival earlier this year. A 70,000 rand purchase as an under-sized, knock-kneed yearling, J J The Jet Plane entered training under the care of rookie trainer and joint-owner “Lucky” Houdalakis. The gelding landed a debut triumph over six furlongs on sand at Vaal racecourse in October, 2007, winning by six lengths. Houdalakis successfully stepped his charge up to Grade Three company for the seven-furlong Graham Beck Stakes at Turffontein on November 3, but defeat followed at the same course in the Grade Two Dingaans on November 24. Sent over nine furlongs in the Listed Sea Cottage Stakes on January 6, 2008, J J The Jet Plane was well-beaten in third behind odds-on favourite Eddington and he suffered another heavy loss at Turffontein in the Grade Two Gauteng Guineas on March 1, when he could only finish 10th in the mile contest. Returned to six furlongs on March 24, the three-year-old (southern hemisphere) impressed with victory in the Grade Two Senor Santa Handicap on turf at Vaal. Another Grade Three triumph followed in the Man O’War Stakes at Turffontein on April 12. J J The Jet Plane proceeded to rattle off a Grade One hat-trick in three of South Africa’s most prestigious sprints. After clinching the five-furlong Computaform Sprint at Turffontein on May 3, the little bay took steps towards greatness in the Golden Horse Casino Sprint at Scottsville on May 31. Carrying top-weight of 80kg, J J The Jet Plane was eased close home as he saw off older rivals by two and a quarter lengths. Following that success, reports suggested the horse would be sold, however, in June, 2008, it was revealed that Mike de Kock was to take over the training of J J The Jet Plane, who would continue under the same ownership. J J The Jet Plane clinched his latest South African victory in awesome fashion as he smashed the track record and slammed his rivals by four lengths in Clairwood’s sprinting showcase, the Mercury Sprint, on July 20. After being denied a run in the Hong Kong Sprint due to quarantine restrictions, the gelding’s first start for de Kock came in a conditions race at Nad Al Sheba, Dubai on February 12. A disappointing sixth-place behind inferior rivals ended that particular experiment on dirt and J J The Jet Plane reverted to turf for an impressive victory in the Group Three Al Quoz Sprint at the course. Bred by Pat and Henry Devine, J J The Jet Plane is by South African stallion sensation Jet Master out of the Listed winner Majestic Guest.

Mike de Kock
Raised within a stone’s throw of Newmarket racecourse in South Africa, Mike de Kock, who was born on February 13, 1964, has been watching horseracing since his youth. In 1981, he was drafted into the Equestrian Unit of the South African defence force and became a riding instructor. After starting out in racing as assistant trainer to Ormond Ferraris, he moved on to Robbie Sage and finally Ricky Howard-Ginsberg. He took over Howard-Ginsberg’s stable upon the trainer’s death in 1989. De Kock was only 25 at the time but within months he had saddled the filly Evening Mist to win the Grade One Administrator’s Champion Stakes. He gained wider fame as the trainer of South African Triple Crown winner Horse Chestnut, widely considered the greatest South African champion. With his main base at Randtjiesfontein near Johannesburg and a satellite yard near Durban, de Kock has been champion trainer in his homeland three times, the first of those titles coming in the 1998/99 season. He has won a host of his country’s top prizes, including the Durban July, J & B Met, Summer Cup, South African Derby, Cape Argus Guineas, South African Filllies Guineas and South African Fillies Classic. He first made a splash internationally on Dubai World Cup night in 2003 as Ipi Tombe landed the Dubai Duty Free and Victory Moon took the UAE Derby. He has been the leading international trainer at the Dubai Racing Carnival every year since its inception in 2004. Major victories at Nad Al Sheba have come thick and fast thanks to the exploits of stable stars Grand Emporium, Right Approach, Sun Classique, Asiatic Boy and Archipenko. In 2008, De Kock trained the last-named to win the Group One Audemars Piguet QEII Cup in Hong Kong, the Group Two Summer Mile at Ascot and to finish second in the Grade One Arlington Million in the US, while Eagle Mountain took the Group One Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Cup. In recent seasons, he has based a select string of horses in Newmarket, England, for a northern hemisphere summer campaign. He has 15 this year at Abingdon Place Stables. He is married to Diane and has two children.

Hennie du Preez, Coenie Strydom, Thea Boyens, Nicholas Michael “Lucky” Houdalakis
Hennie du Preez is a resident of Elsburg, a town on the south east outskirts of Johannesburg. He made his money in the building industry. Du Preez went to the 2006 Emperors Palace National Two-Year-Old Sale determined to buy a horse by Jet Master. He bought J J The Jet Plane for 70,000 rand and roped in his friend Coenie Strydom, a property man, Thea Boyens, the female proprietor of the Elsburg Hotel, and trainer Lucky Houdalakis. Born on June 27, 1963, Houdalakis is a popular South African former jockey who was forced to retire in the wake of an injury sustained in 2003. He began training six horses at James Maree’s private establishment in April, 2006 and moved to the Vaal racecourse in December, 2007. The yard now numbers in excess of 60 inmates. He resides with his wife Natalie in the town of Three Rivers, not far from his training base, which is about 30 miles south of Johannesburg. He got hooked watching horseracing as a boy and became apprenticed to Dave Bullock upon leaving school at 14. As a jockey, Houdalakis enjoyed success in his homeland. He also spent three seasons in Macau, during which time he was never out of the top eight. His highlights in the saddle include victory aboard Legality in the Grade One Empress Club Stakes (15/02/2003). He sent out his first winner, Mans Mood, on July 31, 2006. As well as training J J The Jet Plane to three Grade One triumphs, he prepared Supper Club to win the Grade Two Debutante Stakes in June, 2007.

Kevin Shea
South African Kevin Shea began riding out when he was 13, and joined the Summerveld stable of David Payne after completing his apprenticeship in 1982. He enjoyed a highly successful 18 years with the trainer but it wasn’t until he linked up with Mike de Kock in 2000 that he shot to international prominence. The pair linked up with Ingleside, who landed the Summer Cup in 2001, and also took the 2002 Vodacom July Handicap with Ipi Tombe, who was the first filly in 50 years to triumph in the Grade One feature, helping Shea to his first jockeys’ championship. Ipi Tombe went on to give Shea and de Kock further glory in the 2003 Dubai Duty Free as the trainer began to dominate the Dubai International Racing Carnival. Shea’s other major Nad Al Sheba successes include four winners of the Dubai City Of Gold Stakes, victory in the Dubai Sheema Classic with Sun Classique in 2008. Further international success has followed with several other Mike de Kock-trained horses, headed by Coolmore cast-offs Eagle Mountain, who landed the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Mile in 2008, and Archipenko, who triumphed in the Audemars Piguet QEII Cup in the same year. The latter went on to give Shea a first major success in the UK when taking the Group Two Plymouth Gin Summer Mile at Ascot in July, 2008, and was second in the Grade One Arlington Million the following month. Sacred Kingdom
An AUS$200,000 purchase at the 2005 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Sacred Kingdom began life as Jumbo Star and was bred by Andy and Julia Calvert at their Kornong stud farm in Streatham, Western Victoria. He was bought by trainer Clarry Connors on behalf of owner Sin Kang Yuk and was gelded soon afterwards. After impressing in a barrier trial, Jumbo Star was sent to the Hong Kong stable of Ricky Yiu in March, 2006, and renamed Sacred Kingdom. He made his racecourse debut over five furlongs at Sha Tin racecourse that December when he eased to an impressive two and three-quarter-length victory, despite missing the break, and followed up the eye-catching debut with three further handicap victories over the same course and distance. After a successful step up to six furlongs in another Sha Tin handicap, Sacred Kingdom ended the 2006/07 campaign with his first defeat when he could only finish fourth in a six-furlong Group Three handicap in May. He returned to five furlongs for his seasonal return in October, 2007, and duly recorded a facile success in another Group Three handicap before stepping back up in trip the following month to take the six-furlong Group Two Cathay Pacific International Sprint Trial in scintillating fashion, beating Absolute Champion by two and three-quarter lengths. The pair re-opposed over the same course and distance in the Group One Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint in December, when Sacred Kingdom once again stormed to a facile success, although Absolute Champion did turn the tables with a short-head verdict in the five-furlong Group One Centenary Sprint Cup at the end of January, 2008. Sacred Kingdom gained his revenge three weeks later when showing a blistering turn of foot in the six-furlong Group One Chairman’s Sprint, defeating his old rival by a length and a half. On his first attempt at seven furlongs in the Group One Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup in March, Sacred Kingdom met trouble in running on several occasions before staying on to take second. He ended his season with another comfortable success over his favourite six-furlong trip in the Group Two Gome Sprint in May. Following a nine-month absence due to a hairline fracture of the sesamoid bone, Sacred Kingdom’s current term began with two solid, if unspectacular, displays in Group One company as he came fourth in the Centenary Sprint Cup at the start of February and followed up with a close third in the Chairman’s Sprint Prize later the same month. Sacred Kingdom once again failed to see out seven furlongs when coming sixth in the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup in mid-March but recorded his first victory for exactly a year on May 1, when taking the six-furlong Group Two Sprint Cup by a nose under new jockey Brett Prebble. Sacred Kingdom made his first appearance away from Sha Tin in the six-furlong domestic Group One KrisFlyer International Sprint at Kranji racecourse in Singapore on May 17, when he held on well to repel the challenge of local superstar Rocket Man, winning by a neck and breaking the course record. Sacred Kingdom was not originally entered for any race at Royal Ascot, but has been supplemented for the Golden Jubilee Stakes on Monday, June 15, at a cost of £45,000. He has been staying at Manton in the build-up.

Ricky Yiu
Born on July 12, 1957, Ricky Yiu Poon-fie enjoyed limited success as a jockey, riding 15 winners between 1974 and 1981. He first took out a training licence for the 1995/96 season. Yiu has since enjoyed over 300 winners as a trainer and became the first Chinese trainer to win a Hong Kong International race when Fairy King Prawn landed the inaugural Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint in December, 1999. More recently, Yiu has returned to international prominence through the exploits of the outstanding sprinter Sacred Kingdom, who gave the trainer a second success in the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint in 2007 and went on to glory in the Chairman’s Sprint Prize and the KrisFlyer International Sprint in Singapore. Yiu currently lies 12th in the Hong Kong trainers’ table with 24 victories and HK$24,542,338 to his name (up to June 7).

Sin Kang Yuk
Businessman Sin Kang Yuk, 58, is the director of a garment company in Hong Kong. Prior to Sacred Kingdom, he had enjoyed moderate success as an owner with Just Too Good, who was also trained by Ricky Yiu and won at both Sha Tin in May, 2005, and Happy Valley in March, 2004. His only other previous runner was Everbright Sky, who failed to win any of his six starts between 1997 and 1999 for trainer B K Ng. A keen racegoer, Sin Kang Yuk travelled to Singapore to oversee Sacred Kingdom’s preparation for the KrisFlyer Sprint at Kranji and is expected to be at Royal Ascot to cheer on his sprinter in the Golden Jubilee Stakes.

Brett Prebble
Born on September 23, 1977, in Victoria, Australia, Brett Prebble recorded his first success with Wait On Me at Edenhope on March 6, 1993. He joined the yard of John Meagher as an apprentice the following year and the pair went on to great success, including Prebble’s first Grade One victory on Daacha in the 1995 Syndey Cup. Under Meagher’s guidance, Prebble became champion apprentice for three consecutive seasons between 1996 and 1998. He switched to the powerful stable of David Hall and rode a record nine winners at the prestigious four-day Flemington Carnival in both 1999 and 2000 and was Melbourne’s champion jockey in both 1999/2000 and 2000/2001. In December, 2002, Prebble notched his 1,000th career victory at the tender age of 25. Eager to seek new challenges, Prebble moved to Hong Kong for the second half of the 2002/03 season and the decision paid immediate dividends as he partnered Precision to victory in the Champions & Chater Cup in June, 2003. He enjoyed further big-race success on board the David Oughton-trained Cape Of Good Hope in the Australia Stakes at Melbourne in February, 2005, and the seven-year-old went on to become the inaugural winner of the Global Sprint Challenge with victory in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot at York. A fruitful 2005/06 campaign included the victory of Bullish Luck in the Group One Champions Mile in May, 2006. The Tony Cruz-trained gelding went on to be Hong Kong Horse of the Year and was also victorious under Prebble in the Yasuda Kinen at Tokyo in June of the same year. In the 2006/07 season, Prebble enjoyed a brace of Group One wins on Absolute Champion, including a four and a half length demolition of Silent Witness in the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint, as well as a first success in the Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Derby with Vital King. He also partnered Bullish Luck to be third behind Invasor in the Dubai World Cup and ended the season second in the Hong Kong jockeys’ table behind Doug Whyte, a position he filled once more last term with a personal best of 83 wins to his name. He looks certain to be second once again this season, having notched 70 successes so far. His biggest wins this campaign have come courtesy of Sacred Kingdom, on whom he scored in the Group Two Sprint Cup and the KrisFlyer International Sprint at Singapore.

Trainer: Joe Janiak AUS Jockey: Jay Ford Breeder: Meringo Stud Farm
Takeover Target
Joe Janiak bought the broken down and unraced Takeover Target for a mere AUS$1,200. The gelding made a resounding early impression on his trainer/owner, leaving Janiak with 30 stitches to a head wound after flooring him before a barrier trial. He was put out to grass for six months after that incident but went on to secure seven straight victories when finally making it to the track. The first of those came in a maiden over six furlongs at Queanbeyan, Australia, on April 23, 2004, and the last in the sequence was the Group One Seppelt Salinger Stakes at Flemington on October 30 of that year. He continued to run respectably in top events without winning until securing the Group Three Summer Stakes at Doomben on December 10, 2005. He proceeded to rattle off a hat-trick, adding a Listed contest 14 days later and then taking his second Group One prize, the five-furlong Lightning Stakes at Flemington in February, 2006. Two further starts, including victory in the Group One Newmarket Stakes at Flemington the following month, preceded a trip to Britain. Takeover Target made a stunning British debut when taking the then Group Two King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot by a short-head from Benbaun and finished a creditable third to Les Arcs in the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes four days later. The gelding failed to fire when two lengths seventh to Les Arcs in the Group One Darley July Cup at Newmarket in July. He left for Japan and ran second in the Grade Two Centaur Stakes in September before landing the Group One Sprinters Stakes at Nakayama. He was controversially prevented from competing in Hong Kong that December after medication was found in his system. His return to Australia brought a fifth to Bentley Biscuit in the Group One All-Aged Stakes at Randwick in April, 2007, and that was followed by a close second to the same rival over six furlongs at Doomben in the BTC Cup. He returned to top form in the seven-furlong Group One Carlton Draught Doomben 10,000 in May, when he swept aside star filly Gold Edition for a half-length verdict. Coming back to Royal Ascot for a second time, Takeover Target once again showed his liking for the Berkshire course, finishing a good fourth in his supposed “prep” race, the King's Stand Stakes, before finishing a head second in the Golden Jubilee Stakes four days later. Connections bypassed the Darley July Cup at Newmarket, but Takeover Target suffered a mild bout of colic in July and injured himself in a paddock accident, forcing him out of action for several months. Having made a winning reappearance at Randwick at the start of December, Takeover Target returned to the Sydney racecourse three weeks later to take the six-furlong Listed Star City Razor Sharp Quality Stakes by a nose. Controversy followed on his next appearance at Randwick, when he was demoted to second in the seven-furlong Group Two Villiers Stakes on January 5, 2008, following an objection by the runner-up Honor In War. Returning to Group One company, Takeover Target finished a creditable third behind Apache Cat on heavy ground in the Sydney City Lexus T J Smith Stakes, run over six furlongs at Randwick on April 26. Sent to Singapore to contest the KrisFlyer International Sprint, Takeover Target showed that he still retained all of his ability as a nine-year-old with a scintillating victory in the six-furlong contest at Kranji, beating Magnus by half a length and setting a new course record in the process, in spite of trainer Joe Janiak insisting that the horse was only 90 per cent wound up for the race. A third visit to Royal Ascot then beckoned and again Takeover Target performed with great distinction, going down by half a length to Equiano in the Group One King’s Stand Stakes and then finishing fourth to Kingsgate Native in the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes. After the Royal Meeting, he was put away and returned in the form of his life at the end of 2008 and start of 2009 with victories in the Group Two Winterbottom Stakes at Ascot, Australia, in November and at the same course in the Group Three A J Scahill Stakes in December. Two Group One victories then followed, in the T J Smith Stakes at Randwick on April 18 and in the Goodwood Handicap at Morphettville on May 2. The 10-year-old disappointed on his latest start in the Group One KrisFlyer International Sprint at Kranji, Singapore, on May 17, with trainer Joe Janiak feeling that the gelding perhaps did not handle the track.

Joe & Ben Janiak
Joe Janiak is based at Coffs Harbour in New South Wales, after moving his 10-strong string there following Takeover Target's Royal Ascot win in 2006. Born to Polish parents on a boat travelling to Australia, the 61-year-old is a former baker and taxi driver who shovelled manure at stables as a child to pay for school. He trained a couple of racehorses in a part-time capacity and lived in a caravan for over 12 years at Queanbeyan, a country racetrack outside Canberra. He bought the broken down and unraced Takeover Target for a mere AUS$1,200 and had 30 stitches to a head wound when the gelding floored him before a barrier trial. He owns Takeover Target in partnership with his sons Ben and Scott. Ben, who trained horses under his father's name at Coffs Harbour, took out his own licence in May, 2008, and trains in Canberra. Joe Janiak is set to publish a book entitled “Against All Odds” later this year while there are rumours that the remarkable achievements of Takeover Target could be made into a film with Russell Crowe playing the role of Janiak.

Jay Ford
Based in Sydney, New South Wales, Jay Ford began riding Takeover Target as a 20-year-old apprentice in 2004 and has partnered the gelding to seven of his eight Group One victories. The star sprinter's trainer Joe Janiak gave Ford his first career win aboard Chumbolly. He was New South Wales Champion Apprentice in 2003/04 and, on July 10, 2004, became the first junior in over 25 years to ride five winners in a day at a Sydney Metropolitan meeting. He began riding in 2001as apprentice to Canberra trainer Keith Dryden, and spent the latter part of his apprenticeship with Rosehill trainer Kim Waugh. Takeover Target provided him with his first Group One win when taking the Seppelt Salinger Stakes at Flemington on October 30, 2004.

As well as his global exploits on Takeover Target, Ford's big-race wins also include the 2005 Spring Champion Stakes and the 2006 Randwick Guineas aboard Hotel Grand. Ford lost the mount on Takeover Target when the gelding won at Randwick this April - Janiak didn’t make public why this happened - but has been reunited with his old partner for the latest two outings.

LADIES’ DAY WILL BECOME YEATS’ DAY IF GOLD CUP FAVOURITE OBLIGES

The Thursday of the Royal Meeting is unofficially known as Ladies’ Day and while the colour of the Queen’s hat may be of interest to some, the only thing on the minds of racing fans today is whether or not Yeats can gallop his way into the history books by winning his fourth consecutive Gold Cup, the third race on today’s card at 3.45pm.

“Yeats has been really strong this morning,” reports George Primarolo, spokesman for totesport, who have held his price at 2/1 while the eight-year-old has been trimmed in the betting to 2/1 (from 9/4) by Paddy Power with Cashmans going shorter still at 7/4 from 2/1.

The opening contest, the Norfolk Stakes, features the third of Wesley Ward’s juveniles, Yogaroo. With Strike The Tiger and Jealous Again both having won already this week, Yogaroo has now been slashed to 9/4 from 100/30 with Cashmans and is 15/8 from 9/4 with totesport. Here Now And Why has come in for some support, being halved to 20/1 from 40s by Cashmans. Paddy Power have also cut outsider Diamond Johnny G from 60/1 to 40/1.

July Jasmine and Totally Devoted have found some favour in the betting for the Ribblesdale Stakes (3.05pm) with July Jasmine cut from 6/1 to 13/2 with Paddy Power and 11/2 from 8/1 with Cashmans while Boylesports have Totally Devoted at 20/1, in from 28/1.
In the Britannia Stakes (4.20pm), Brief Encounter is now challenging Desert Creek for favouritism having been shortened to 6/1 from 10/1 with Cashmans and to 6/1 from 7/1 with Paddy Power, who have also pruned River Captain to 12/1 from 14/1, a price matched by totesport, who have cut him from 16/1.

The Queen was narrowly denied a winner yesterday when Golden Stream was beaten by Moneycantbuymelove and Her Majesty’s challenger in today’s Hampton Court Stakes (4.55pm), Four Winds, has been shortened to 7/1 from 8/1 with totesport while Boylesports have seen some interest in Monitor Closely, who is now 6/1, in from 7/1.

The Aga Khan’s Zarinski looks set to start favourite in the last, the King George V Stakes (5.30pm), and the son of Dalakhani continues to receive support this morning with Paddy Power and totesport quoting him at 13/2 from 15/2. Currently second-favourite, Chiberta King has been shortened by Paddy Power to 7/1 from 9/1 while Boylesports have cut Brunston two points to 9/1 and totesport also report support for London Bridge, who is now 12/1 from 16/1.

WEDNESDAY’S LATE STEWARDS’ ENQUIRIES

Both John Gosden and Jeremy Noseda incurred fines for horses under their care arriving late in the parade ring on the second day of the Royal Meeting.

Royal Hunt Cup runners Cadre and eventual winner Forgotten Voice entered the parade ring after the signal to mount had been given and, after being questioned by the stewards, Gosden and Noseda each received fines of £140. Gosden was later penalised again for the same offence when Wajaha was late into the parade ring for the Sandringham Handicap, receiving a total penalty for the two incidents of £280.

Trainer Mark Johnston incurred a third criteria failure owing to the behaviour of Lovelace at the start for the Royal Hunt Cup. This being the second occasion that Lovelace has been reported by the starter, the five-year-old is now required to pass a stalls test before he can race again.

Jamie Spencer also came before the stewards following his winning ride on Moneycantbuymelove in the Sandringham Handicap and was found guilty of improper riding after allowing insufficient time for his mount to respond to his use of the whip. Spencer received a two-day ban and will thus be suspended on Wednesday, 1 and Thursday, 2 July, 2009.
