ROYAL ASCOT 2009
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
SECOND DAY, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 17

First Race - The Jersey Stakes - Winner’s Quotes

O’SHEA GRASPS GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY

Tadgh O’Shea had the second choice of mounts for the Jersey Stakes, but it could hardly have worked out better. Ouqba rattling up the straight to give the Irish jockey his first-ever Royal Ascot victory. “Let’s hope it’s the first of many,” said O’Shea.

Ouqba had plenty of decent form in the book, but was the lesser fancied of the two Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned colts in the race, largely because the owner’s retained jockey Richard Hills had selected Infiraad (who started 51/ favourite) as his mount. “He said the horse had given him a really good feel on the racecourse,” said Angus Gold, Racing Manager to Hamdan Al Maktoum.

But Infiraad, though up with the early pace, showed little at the business end and trailed home in last place. “Richard said the ground was too quick and he’s a big heavy horse,” explained Gold.

Referring to the winner’s previous race in the 2000 Guineas (when he faded to finish 11th behind Sea the Stars), Gold admitted that the entry had been something of an “afterthought”.

“We thought it would give us an extra string to our bow, but I think we probably felt seven furlongs was his best bet.

“For Ouqba, I think this [the Jersey Stakes] was his Derby. He’s just a few pounds below the best. I was really impressed today because I thought he was the first horse beaten but he plugged on. He’s a tough little so-and-so,” said Gold.

Tadgh O’Shea, who was presented with his prize by Bruce Forsyth, said he was: “Absolutely ecstatic, it’s a result and a day I won’t be forgetting for a while.”

“We were well drawn, he broke well, but he raced pretty lazy really. At halfway I thought we were in a little bit of trouble, but we starting picking one or two off. He’s a very tough horse.”

“I don’t think he ran bad in the Guineas. I think Richard felt that he might be best at seven and they’ve got that spot on. Seven furlongs in a true-run race is where he excels,” said O’Shea.

Charlie Hills, son and assistant to Barry Hills who trains both horses, said: "We were delighted with Ouqba’s work leading up to the Free Handicap. He won very convincingly there and probably the 2000 Guineas came a bit too quick for him. He didn’t run a bad race there but ran a little bit flat. We had been delighted with him prior to this race.

"Infiraad was working well too and that is why Richard chose him - he’s a progressive horse. Ouqba is a very tough and genuine horse and that’s what you need really.

"He has actually raced quite lazily today but he has really knuckled down well. He has shown a very good turn of foot in his races before and I was delighted with today.

"My father will be watching from his bed. He’s doing much better now and hopefully he will be out of hospital by the end of the week."

FRONT-RUNNER DEPOSED BY LATE CHARGE

Deposer’s front-running antics may not have been part of the plan but the 16/1 shot came close to recording a shock victory and was just pipped in the closing stages by the fast-finishing Ouqba to lose by half a length.

His trainer John Best said: “The plan wasn’t really to make it. We discussed it beforehand and we thought that there would be plenty of others that would want to lead but he hit the gates so fast - he always does - so Robert (Winston) said he wasn’t going to interfere with him.

“He’s run an absolute stormer and Robert’s given him a great ride. We’ve just been unlucky and beaten by a better horse on the day.”

Deposer is owned by Kent Bloodstock, a syndicate formed by Best to race eight horses, which included last year’s Windsor Castle Stakes third Mullionmileanhour and Lingfield winner Axel Foley, both of whom have already been sold. Deposer looks set to follow suit.

Best continued: “Kent Bloodstock was set up as a profit-making exercise and he’ll probably be sold now - I had a good few enquiries before the race so I imagine he’ll be off to pastures new.”

Godolphin’s Ashram came home best of the chasing pack to take third after a tussle with fourth-placed Gallagher.

His jockey Frankie Dettori said: “I was pleased with Ashram. He ran very well and seven furlongs or a mile suits him.”

JOCKEYS PLEASED WITH GROUND

Jockeys riding in the first race felt the ground ranged from good to good-to-firm.

Richard Hills described it as “good-to-firm”, Christophe Lemaire said it was “good” while Robert Winston said it was “on the quick side of good”.

Martin Dwyer said that it was “a bit quicker than yesterday”, Liam Keniry said that it was “good, fast ground” while Ted Durcan described the racing surface as “lovely ground”.

Second race - The Windsor Forest Stakes
Winner’s quotes

FANSHAWE AND MURTAGH TEAM UP AGAIN WITH ANOTHER SPECIAL FILLY

The finish of the Windsor Forest Stakes proved to be a thrilling spectacle, not least for owner/breeders David and Patricia Thompson of Cheveley Park Stud, who watched their own Spacious and Heaven Sent engage in a battle royal in the closing stages with Spacious coming out on top by a length.

The James Fanshawe-trained four-year-old jumped smartly to make all the running under Johnny Murtagh in a perfectly executed plan to dominate.

“Johnny said after Epsom that he’d really like to ride her here and I think Willie (Carson) has been saying on television all year that we should make more use of her stride,” said a delighted James Fanshawe, whose charge beat that of his former boss Sir Michael Stoute. “There didn’t seem to be an obvious front-runner so Johnny told me he was going to make it. She had a hell of a battle with Heaven Sent and my ex-boss won’t be very happy.”

He continued: “This filly has been a little bit disappointing since last year after she was second in the Guineas last year. She can get caught a little bit flat-footed when there’s no pace but she dictated today and was very courageous.

“It’s great to get her winning again. The stiff mile really seems to suit her but I think she’d get a mile and a quarter on an easy track.”

Johnny Murtagh replaced the filly’s regular rider Jamie Spencer in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Epsom and kept the ride for Royal Ascot.

The Irish jockey rode regularly for Fanshawe when based in England, the pair teaming up most memorably with the outstanding mare Soviet Song, who won this same race in 2006.

Murtagh said: “She’s a big-striding filly with lovely balance. She was a bit chopped up in the straight at Epsom but I thought this race would be ideal for her.

“She came out of Epsom really well and I let her stride along. She’s a beautiful mover and she really put them to the test.

“When Heaven Sent came to us we had a good battle but thankfully we came out on top. I really enjoyed that - James looked after me when I was riding in England and he’s a dangerous man at Royal Ascot - he always has his horses in peak condition here.”

SECOND RACE PLACED QUOTES
WINDSOR FOREST STAKES (GROUP 2)

FASTER PACE WOULD HAVE SUITED EVA’S

Trainer Mick Channon was happy with the effort of Eva’s Request to finish third behind Cheveley Park Stud’s duo of Heaven Sent and Spacious in the Windsor Forest Stakes.

“I’m pleased with her, she’s stepped up again although they didn’t go very fast today,” said Channon. “I’ve no complaints and I know she beat the winner last week at Epsom but they went a proper gallop then and just crawled today.

“She’s holding her form, which is great and I don’t know exactly where we’ll go - she’s in all the top mile races, including the Falmouth, but we want to win with her.

“She doesn’t want it too firm although I’m not using that as an excuse, it was perfect today.”

THIRD RACE WINNING QUOTES
PRINCE OF WALES’S STAKES (GROUP 1)

VISION WINS FOR FRANCE

French raider Vision D’Etat captured today’s feature Group One Prince Of Wales’s Stakes after being produced with a well-timed run under Olivier Peslier to beat Tartan Bearer by half a length.

The winner is trained in the Loire Valley by Eric Libaud, who was delighted with the victory.

"I’ve won races in Hong Kong, Dubai and at home but I think out of all of my winners throughout the world, this is the best one,” said Libaud. “I knew that it was going to be difficult but I knew that the horse was going well and Olivier had said to me beforehand that the straight is very long here at Ascot and I was quietly confident. It’s certainly the best victory I have ever achieved.

“The race panned out exactly as we had hoped and although we forgot to declare a tongue strap, that was more of a worry to the media than myself, we just put it in him at the start of his career so continued doing it because we had always done it.”

Vision D’Etat was quoted at 10/1 by bookmakers for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, in which he finished fifth last year, the Longchamp showpiece will again be the target.

Libaud added: “I think this horse is better this year than last, he’s really grown into himself and I think we could go into the Arc with a realistic chance this season because the crop is not so good as last year.”

Peslier added: “I wasn’t really panicking at the back because just before I was behind the lead and the horse on the outside was moving well. I didn’t really have the chance to move out and my horse is not lazy but it took him a little bit of time.

"I took a chance at the rear and after that, the horse was moving well and the trainer told me before that it is better to come late because in France they stop a little bit. The race was perfect for me because, after taking a chance, he fought on well and was very strong in the finish. I never thought we would be beaten.

"He a typical French horse - when you are a length or two behind, it’s not really a big problem because he has a good turn of foot and finishes very well. That was a big help to me. When we talked about plans beforehand we said it would be better to stay behind and come from there.

"I think that everybody loves Royal Ascot - for the racing and also for the champagne bar! For the ladies and the people, and my wife is very happy to come here and see Royal Ascot. All the team are very happy

“The horse won the French Derby last year but he continues to progress and today is very special for French racing because all the champions are here at this meeting.

“Of course he is a four-year-old now so this will be his chance to go for the Arc but we must celebrate today properly so I will see you in the champagne bar!”

Third Race - The Prince Of Wales’s Stakes - Placed Quotes

TARTAN BEARER STILL AWAITS GROUP ONE WIN

Trainer Sir Michael Stoute was full of praise for Tartan Bearer, after his charge narrowly missed out again on a Group One victory, finishing half a length adrift of Vision d’Etat in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes.

“He ran another great race, he’s never run a bad one. We would have liked a quicker early pace, but they all would. We’ve got no excuses,” said Stoute.

“The horse is widely entered and we’ve got all the options. We’ll wait and see how he comes out of this,” added the trainer.

The placed horses all finished within a length of the winner and Never On Sunday just failed to make up the ground on Tartan Bearer, finishing a head behind the Stoute-trained colt.

Trainer Jean Claude Rouget said: "From the stands I thought there wasn’t enough pace and he came up to horses racing wide, which made it difficult but Christophe (Lemaire) said he ran very well. I’m very happy with the horse. The three favourites were the first three home. Ten furlongs is ideal for him but he can handle nine furlongs as well.”
Lemaire said: "He came like the winner but it’s the first time he has met such a strong field. He came there very well and was very genuine - he ran a very good race."

Fourth Race - The Royal Hunt Cup - Winner Quotes

FORGOTTEN VOICE SINGS OUT

Forgotten Voice, who had never previously raced on turf, spreadeagled the field in the Royal Hunt Cup, the 4/1 favourite winning by two and a quarter lengths, to justify the confidence of his trainer Jeremy Noseda. “It’s not often the plans you have in your mind for a long time come to fruition,” said Noseda, who explained that patience allied to planning had brought the desired results.

“We liked him as a two-year-old and he won at the back end of that season. Unfortunately he got injured in March of last year - my right hand man Dave Bradley saw a little problem on his leg and thank God he stopped him at just the right time,” he said.

“We decided to be patient with him, bring him back, and we hatched this plan sitting on a plane going to Keeneland last September. We realised that he was possibly a very well handicapped horse and we thought to ourselves that this horse could win the Royal Hunt Cup.

“I said we need two runs, get rated 95 and that would guarantee us a run in the race. Then we’ll go from there. The plan worked, we had a couple of starts and we were rated 101, but I still felt good about it. He’s been a tough horse to bring back - he’s not had a lot of racing and he’s very novicey. He’s been improving mentally now and it’s a good day.

“I had a two-part plan in my mind - this and the Magnet Cup but Johnny [Murtagh] tells me to forget the Magnet Cup and he’s normally a good man to listen to.

“Paul [Roy] must take a lot of credit. He’s been very patient. Thank God, it’s been rewarded today.”

Owner Paul Roy, chairman of the BHA, said flippantly: “ I always get the worst handicapped horses,” but that clearly wasn’t the case today.

Roy emphasised how important the plans are for all of his horses. “There is always a plan for all of our horses - meticulous planning, and attention to detail. I think that’s what makes Jeremy and the team so good.”

For jockey Johnny Murtagh, it was a third win at this year’s Royal Ascot, and took him to the top of the jockey’s table on places. “He’s probably a bit better than a handicapper and it’s been a long time since I rode a handicapper down to the start and was so confident. He went down to the start like a really nice horse - he’s a big strong galloper,” said the jockey.

"I was travelling well on the inside and I saw Philip Robinson drifting off the rail a bit. He was pulling his stick into his right hand and trying to straighten his horse up. Before he had him straightened, I made sure that I had a nice run and he’s an uncomplicated horse. He was hot favourite today, so I wanted to give everybody a run for their money and I also wanted to see how good he was. When I gave him a backhander, he hit the front a bit too soon. He’s big, fresh, still a big playboy with a lot of improvement in him.

"Three days is long enough to be top jockey here! I have 12 rides booked and I am aiming to have six winners. If I can six winners by the end of tomorrow, Richard [Hughes] can come and beat me then!”

Fourth race - The Royal Hunt Cup
Placed quotes

HUZZAH ON COURSE FOR A BIG HANDICAP AS MIA’S BOY MAY TACKLE SUSSEX STAKES

Barry Hills has already enjoyed a winner on the second day of the Royal Meeting with Ouqba in the Jersey Stakes but he had to settle for second with Huzzah, who ran home gamely behind highly impressive winner Forgotten Voice to take second by two and a quarter lengths.

Charlie Hills, assistant trainer to his father Barry, said: “We’re really pleased with him - he’s obviously been beaten by a very good horse. We used some different tactics this time and it seemed to work.

“We’ve always thought there was a decent handicap in the horse so let’s hope the handicapper isn’t too hard on him now.”

Trainer Chris Dwyer has made a tentative entry in the Group One Sussex Stakes for his third-placed finisher Mia’s Boy, whose owner Iraj Parvizi was watching the race from his home in Marbella.

“I’m delighted with him but I would just have liked a little more cut in the ground,” said Dwyer, who retired from training in 2006 only to return a year later and now trains five horses from his Burrough Green yard just outside Newmarket.

“He’s never let us down - he’s a great horse and he has a good race in him. I’ve been a bit ambitious and entered him in the Sussex. I’ll have a look at it and if it ended up on the soft side he might take his chance.”

Jim Goldie, trainer of the fourth-placed Nanton, was not at Ascot but was represented by his son, Jim junior. He and the seven-year-old’s owner Stuart Morrison were delighted to see the grey finish in the frame.

Morrison said: “That was fantastic. To be placed in a big handicap like this is great. The Scottish contingent is very happy. He wasn’t himself in the Spring Mile - he has to have good to firm ground which he got today and we don’t mind if it rains now.”

PESLIER BANNED

Jockey Olivier Peslier picked up a one-day suspension, to take place on July 1, after being found to have used his whip in an incorrect position when winning the Prince Of Wales's Stakes on Vision D'Etat.

FLYNN FINED

Trainer Pat Flynn was fined a total of £580 by the stewards for two offences relating to She's Our Mark, his runner in the Windsor Forest Stakes.

He was fined £290 for administering a substance on racecourse premises the day before a race without dispensation and another £290 for finding the trainer in the possession of a potentially allowable substance on racecourse premises.

Fifth race - The Queen Mary Stakes - winner’s quotes

JEALOUS AGAIN SEALS HISTORIC AMERICAN DOUBLE

Just 24 hours earlier, trainer Wesley Ward had warned that Jealous Again was much better than his Windsor Castle Stakes winner Strike The Tiger and the two-year-old Trippi filly proved these were not empty words when bolting from the gate to forge instantly clear of her rivals before kicking on again for a facile five-length victory.

Sent off at 13/2, from a morning price of 16/1, Jealous Again never saw another rival as she sprinted home to become only the second American-trained winner ever at the Royal Meeting.

“This is such an honour to be here and to have two winners is just fantastic,” said Ward. “When Cannonball got invited to his race I thought I’d bring over a few two-year-olds and target some of your races as at this time of year there are not really that many opportunities for stakes races at home. So far they’ve both won and I’m very proud of my horses.

“She ran brilliantly and Johnny (Velazquez) rode a great race. In America we train for speed and that’s one of the reasons I came over - I thought I could maybe get a jump on the other trainers and other horses as I train to get my horses out nice and early and take advantage of the early races. Your horses are bred more for longer distances and ours are bred more for speed.”

Ward still has three juveniles to run at the Royal Meeting - his homebred Yogaroo in the Norfolk Stakes, Aegean in the Albany and Honor In Peace in the Chesham - and he is set to back up Cannonball in Saturday’s Golden Jubilee Stakes.

He continued: “Yogaroo has got a big chance also. I own the sire (Bring The Heat) and he throws sprinters. Aegean is better than this filly (Jealous Again). She’s a lovely filly, she’s fantastic, that’s all I can say.”

Paying tribute to jockey Rene Douglas, who was partially paralysed in a race fall just a few weeks before the meeting, the trainer added: “One thing I would like to say is that Rene Douglas was scheduled to come here to ride them and he was so excited about it. I feel so bad that he’s not here but I’m delighted that Johnny was able to ride.”

Velazquez said: “It’s an easy job for me as Wesley had them ready to go. I wasn’t surprised at her today. She was impressive and I knew she would be very fast. She was fast out of the gates and I just kept her running once she got away from them. The only question I had was how she would handle the ground but Wesley did well to bring them over early to Newmarket and work them on the grass.

“Ascot is a beautiful place to come to, so prestigious. It’s a dream come true to ride two winners. I came here in 2000 and I have always looked at it since then and have been very impressed. When the offer came to come here I said ‘yes I’d love to’ and having two winners is the icing on the cake. I’d love to come here every summer for this event. I have prior commitments back in America otherwise I’d have been staying for Saturday too.”

FIFTH RACE PLACED QUOTES
QUEEN MARY STAKES (GROUP 2)

BRITTAIN AND SMART FULL OF HOPE FOR FUTURE

Trainers Clive Brittain and Bryan Smart, represented by runner-up Misheer and third-placed Ceedwell, have big hopes for their fillies after they finished behind the sensational American raider Jealous Again in the Queen Mary Stakes.

“I knew we’d beat the best of the English and we did,” said Brittain. “OK, she didn’t beat the lightening speed, but she stayed on and she has now performed on three different surfaces and three different tracks.

“We’re not finished yet and the jockey said she wanted six furlongs but I’d have no qualms going over another two furlongs and go up to seven.”

Smart said of the Willie Carson-bred Ceedwell: “The Cheveley Park Stakes and six furlongs is what she wants as long as the ground is on our side.

“The winner was obviously exceptional on the day but our’s was the only one galloping home at the end and the jockey couldn’t stop her to pull up.

“I think this was the best Queen Mary for four or five years and if anything our filly was rushed to get here. I’ve said for a while that she’s the best filly I’ve had for a long time and she is.”

SIXTH RACE WIN QUOTES
SANDRINGHAM HANDICAP (LISTED)

MONEYCANTBUYMELOVE BEETLES HOME

Jamie Spencer produced the 9/2 favourite Moneycantbuymelove with a well-timed run to beat the Queen’s Golden Stream and win the concluding Sandringham Handicap for trainer Michael Bell.

“I couldn’t believe the handicapper didn’t put her up for her last win so we had to run her here because she seemed so well-handicapped,” said Bell, who trains the filly for a partnership comprising New England Stud owner Peter Stanley, breeder Nick Wright, Lord Lloyd-Webber’s racing manager Simon Marsh, bloodstock agent Hugo Lascelles and Lordship Stud’s owner Trevor Harris.

“Red Evie won this race for me off a mark of 96 and she was drawn four as well so all the omens were right.

“She’s owned by five great mates so this is fantastic and I knew she was pretty smart - it was just a question of whether dropping back to a mile was a problem but Jamie rode her beautifully.

“I have a runner for the Queen tomorrow so I’m sure I won’t be too popular!”

Spencer punched the air after passing the winning post and added: “It’s so hard to ride a winner at this place and I’m banned for the final two days so this was fantastic.

“She’s owned by a good bunch of owners who are all stud owners and racing managers - they probably control 200 horses between them so I’d have lost a lot of rides if I’d cocked up!

“The great thing about riding for Michael is that he lets you do what you think is best and I picked Ryan (Moore on Golden Stream) half a mile out going easily so I tracked him and he was the only one I was worried about.

“I’m riding for the Queen tomorrow and we have a good chance and she actually caught me out with a joke earlier in the season. I fell off the horse going down and she asked me what the ground was like.”

Sixth Race - The Sandringham Handicap - Placed Quotes

GOLDEN STREAM HAS TO SETTLE FOR SILVER

The Queen’s Golden Stream, who led coming into the final furlong, was just out-battled by Moneycantbuymelove in the final furlong of the Sandringham Handicap, going down by two lengths.

In her previous outing, Golden Stream had raced over one mile two furlongs, and the step back in distance - to one mile - clearly didn’t unsettle the filly.

Trainer Sir Michael Stoute said: “She is bred to stay a mile and a half, but it looks like she might even be better at seven furlongs.”

Mick Channon had two fillies in the race, Please Sing and Silver Games, and they finished third and fourth respectively.

“I’m delighted, I might still have a job if all my horses run like that,” he said.

“I was pleased how well Please Sing stayed on and, while I’m not making excuses, Silver Games was drawn out wide [19],” said Channon.

SHOWERS FORECAST BUT UNLIKELY TO AFFECT GOING DESCRIPTION

Having put two millimetres of water on the course overnight on Tuesday, Ascot’s Clerk of the Course Chris Stickels was not planning to have to repeat this procedure with showers forecast for Wednesday evening.

“There have been a few drops of rain this afternoon and I’m expecting some showers between now and 10 o’clock tonight,” said Stickels.

“It could be as much as a couple of millimetres which would be really handy. I’m not planning on watering tonight.”

Looking ahead to Ladies’ Day at Royal Ascot, he added: “Tomorrow there’s a 50 per cent chance of an odd shower otherwise it will be mainly dry for the rest of the week.

“At this stage I’m not anticipating any major change to the state of the ground.”

CROWD FIGURES FOR WEDNESDAY

Racegoers for the second day of the Royal Meeting numbered 38,209 compared to 41,911 for the same day in 2008.

TOTE

Today’s tote on-course cash turnover was £1,099,961, 15.5 per cent down on last year’s figures.

“We had to refund £40,000 because of the three withdrawals in the Royal Hunt Cup and without that the figure would have been down 12 per cent,” said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.

The totesport’s betting on the London Clubs International Charity Trophy for leading jockey at Royal Ascot is 4/5 Richard Hughes, 2 Johnny Murtagh, 11/2 Ryan Moore, 9 John Velazquez.

Friday’s feature race, the Coronation Stakes (3.45pm) promises to be a mouth-watering contest as the winners of the English, Irish and French 1000 Guineas are set to line up against each other for the first time. Ghanaati, Again and Elusive Wave will go head-to-head to claim supremacy in the three-year-old fillies’ mile division after each gaining Classic honours at Newmarket, the Curragh and Longchamp respectively.

Attraction was the last filly to add the Coronation Stakes to her 1000 Guineas victory in 2004, the year before Maids Causeway gave trainer Barry Hills his first Coronation Stakes victory. Hills will be hoping Ghanaati, whom he trains for Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, can provide his second, to boost what has already been a tremendous season for the veteran handler, who earlier this year celebrated his 3,000th winner.

Again was the first Classic winner for David Wachman, who sent out the winner of the 2004 Queen Mary Stakes, Damson, for the same owners, Sue Magnier, who is also his mother-in-law, and Michael Tabor.

Elusive Wave represents Jean-Claude Rouget’s Pau stable, which has triumphed in three of the four French Classics run this year, including the Elusive City filly’s win in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches. Elusive Wave is not the only French challenger as she is joined in the line-up by Reggane, a winner on her debut in May, who went on to finish runner-up in the Group Two Prix de Sandringham later the same month.

After an unbeaten juvenile season, which included a win in the Meon Valley Stud Fillies’ Mile at Ascot, champion two-year-old filly Rainbow View is yet to salute the judge this year and arrives for the Coronation Stakes on the back of her fourth place in the Oaks at Epsom. Her trainer John Gosden struck in this race three years ago with Nannina.

John Oxx has also tasted Coronation Stakes success with his superstar filly Ridgewood Pearl in 1995 and this year he has supplemented the Aga Khan’s Baliyana, a winner of her last start in the Group Three Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial.

Irish challengers also include another from the Wachman stable, Chintz, who was fifth to her stablemate in the Irish Classic and Aidan O’Brien’s English 1000 Guineas fourth, Heart Shaped. The Mick Channon-trained Fred Darling winner Lahaleeb will seek to go one better than her second place behind Again in the Irish 1,000 Guineas.

WARD AND VELAZQUEZ SET TO MAKE HOME TEAM JEALOUS AGAIN

Twenty-four hours after being responsible for the first American-trained winner at Royal Ascot, trainer Wesley Ward and jockey John Velazquez team up again in the Queen Mary Stakes (4.55pm) with Jealous Again, a filly they consider to be much better than yesterday’s Windsor Castle Stakes winner Strike The Tiger.

“I’m really expecting her to run a fantastic race although I know it will be stiffer competition,” said Ascot first-timer Ward of the filly he describes as “very special”.

He added: “It’s great to prove that you can bring a horse over from America and be competitive here and I hope our win will open doors.”

John Velazquez, who is enjoying his second visit to the Royal Meeting, said of his intended mount, who is trading at around 9/1: “I think she’s pretty fast and if she handles the ground she has a good chance - she’s a very, very good filly.

“It’s her first time on the grass and I’m just going to let her do what she wants to do. They’re going to have to really come to get her.”

He continued: “It’s great to be here and have a win under my belt.”

The California-based Ward also sent out Cannonball to run sixth in the King’s Stand Stakes on the opening day of the meeting and the four-year-old is set to reappear in Saturday’s Golden Jubilee Stakes, though he will be without the services of Velazquez who has riding engagements in America over the weekend.

“We’re all set for Saturday,” Ward confirmed. “I’m making some enquiries at the moment to see who will ride him.”

In the meantime, he has another three juveniles to represent him during the week with Yogaroo set to run in tomorrow’s Norfolk Stakes, Aegean in the Albany Stakes on Friday and Honor In Peace in the Chesham on Saturday. Of these, Ward is particularly excited about the prospects of Aegean.

He said of owner Steven Michael Bell’s daughter of Northern Afleet: “Aegean is a very talented filly. She’s had a couple of wins and she’s very experienced and very well travelled. I would think she’s going to be the best chance of the week.”

Tuesday’s tally of three overseas winners - Scenic Blast (Australia), Strike The Tiger (USA) and Mastercraftsman (Ireland) - matched the 2005 meeting, which was held at York, when Chineur and Valixir struck for France and Tony Martin’s Leg Spinner secured the Ascot Stakes for Ireland.

YEATS BIDS FOR GREATNESS

Ascot’s grandstand roof could be in danger at around 3.50pm tomorrow should Yeats, the most popular Flat horse of recent seasons, capture the £250,000 Group One Gold Cup.

The eight-year-old is bidding to create history by becoming the first horse ever to win the two and a half mile event, a race first staged in 1807, four times.

Yeats was home-bred by his owners, John and Sue Magnier of Coolmore Stud and Barronstown Stud’s David and Diane Nagle, and made his debut for trainer Aidan O’Brien when winning a Curragh two-year-old maiden in September, 2003.

Although he won the Group Two Derrinstown Derby Trial in April, 2004, his classic campaign was curtailed by injury but he bounced back the following year to win the Group One Coronation Cup at Epsom.

His 2006 season began in the Gold Cup, when he beat Reefscape by four lengths under Kieren Fallon. He returned to Ascot 12 months later to win the two and a half mile showpiece by a length and a half from Geordieland with Mick Kinane in the saddle.

He beat the same rival last year by five lengths, this time with Johnny Murtagh riding, and looks set to start favourite tomorrow on despite being well beaten on unsuitably heavy ground on his seasonal debut at Navan in April.

Murtagh, who won yesterday’s feature St James’s Palace Stakes aboard Yeats’ stablemate Mastercraftsman, will again be in the saddle tomorrow and is looking forward to the occasion.

“I’m trying not to think about that one and get today out of the way first,” said Murtagh. “It’s going to be huge for us and Ascot is the place where he comes into his own. Like me he excels himself on the big occasions, two and a half miles and the big crowd here bring out the best in him.”

Yeats has already earned a place in the history books after joining the Francois Boutin-trained Sagaro, who took the Gold Cup from 1975 to 1977, as only the second three-time winner of the Group One contest but - if successful on Thursday - he will break new ground.

Geordieland, also now an eight-year-old, will again be in opposition in this year’s Gold Cup, and heads to Ascot in good form after winning the Group Two Henry II Stakes at Sandown, with the runner-up that day, Patkai, set to reoppose.

The Godolphin stable has won the Gold Cup four times before and go three-handed into this year’s running with Eastern Anthem, Sagara and Veracity.

Two of Yeats’ former stablemates will be in opposition. Hindu Kush, bought for 120,000 guineas by owner Marwan Koukash at Tattersalls in October, won a Leopardstown Listed race for trainer David Nicholls in May, while Washington Irving - who finished fifth in last year’s Derby for Aidan O’Brien - will be having his second start for trainer Howard Johnson after being bought for 300,000 guineas by owner Graham Wylie.

The field is completed by the John Gosden-trained Centennial.

LUSH LASHES - IS THE LUSTRE STILL THERE?

Trainer Jim Bolger, who carried all before him in the UK last summer (seven wins from 20 runners netting £1.8m in prize money), has been nowhere near as prolific this summer (just one UK winner from seven runners), and Lush Lashes, back with her own sex in the Windsor Forest Stakes (3:05), would give the stable a significant boost.

Punters certainly appear to have discounted the filly’s last run in the Tattersalls Gold Cup, in bottomless ground at the Curragh, believing that perfect ground at Ascot will be much more her cup of tea. But the messages are mixed: Paddy Power shortening the filly to 6/4, from 7/4, then easing the price to 13/8.

Staying with the fillies: American trainer Wesley Ward, who provided the shock of the opening day (the only shock on the opening day) when Strike The Tiger repelled borders in the Windsor Castle Stakes has been bullish about his filly Jealous Again in a hotly-contested Queen Mary Stakes (4:55).

Punters have taken Ward, the first American trainer to win at Royal Ascot, at his word. Pricewise, in the Racing Post, suggested an investment at 12/1, but there isn’t any 12/1 available today. William Hill and Ladbrokes are both offering the filly at 10/1, while totesport, Sky Bet, Boylesports and Paddy Power are only offering 9/1, and Coral are showing just 8/1.

The Sandringham Handicap (5:30) is the third race on the card for fillies or mares. The Gerard Butler-trained three-year-old Good Again is also a Pricewise selection and, almost inevitably, has been backed.

Of course, this may be less to do with Pricewise, more to do with mathematics as Good Again’s form pattern is such that wins come every alternate race, and the filly was only fourth last time out. Good Again has shortened to 8/1 from 9/1 with Paddy Power and Ladbrokes, to 15/2 with Boylesports, and right down to 13/2 with Coral.

NEVER ON SUNDAY - MAYBE ON WEDNESDAY?

Trainer Jean-Claude Rouget has carried all before him in France this summer; the recent performances of Le Havre in the Prix du Jockey-Club on June 7th, and Stacelita in the Prix de Diane a week later, particularly impressive.

Never On Sunday has yet to be spoken of in the same breath of his illustrious stablemates, but he did win his first Group One when he took the Prix d’Ispahan last month and the trainer insists he is improving, which makes the support with Paddy Power for the Prince Of Wales Stakes (3:45), in to 7/2 from 4/1, all the more interesting.

Of course, Tartan Bearer, so close to winning last year’s Epsom Derby, sets the standard, and the punters are showing steady support for the Michael-Stoute trained colt who still heads the market for the race, with 7/4 on offer from William Hill and Paddy Power and 13/8 from Ladbrokes.

Forgotten Voice and Cadre have been highlighted as the potential handicap blots in the Royal Hunt Cup (4:20) and, even though Forgotten Voice has yet to race on turf, he remains 4/1 favourite with most firms. Cadre has at least closed the gap, the John Gosden-trained gelding now 15/2 with William Hill having been available at 17/2.

The other notable mover in the Hunt Cup market is the ultra-consistent Mia’s Boy, who Ryan Moore will be hoping will help him close the gap in the London Clubs International Charity Trophy for Leading Jockey - Richard Hughes having built up an impressive lead in just one day. The Chris Dwyer-trained horse has come into 14/1, from 16/1, with William Hill, and is now as short as 12/1 with totesport.

In the Jersey Stakes (2:30) Ouqba has some decent form, which makes it all the more telling that Richard Hills has opted for the other Hamdan Al Maktoum horse, Infiraad. That appears to be the logic being applied by punters as Infiraad - moving up from a handicap to a Group Three race - has been well supported. Sky Bet and totesport have shortened the horse to 9/2 favourite, from 5/1, and Coral are down to 4/1.
