Initial win quotes
PACO BOY DESERVES PRAISE
Richard Hannon, trainer of the winner Paco Boy, said: “I think that has put a few old jokers to bed! If he didn’t stay a mile today, then he stayed it better than the others, anyway.
“At Newbury, I didn’t think that he was quite right. He came home and he had an infection in his foot and I didn’t think that he was moving quite right. We had to take a chance in the Lockinge but now we have had a chance to get him right and I couldn’t be more delighted for the little horse.
“I don’t know what the plan is now. We’ve got the Prix de la Foret, of course, and we were going to whip back to the July Cup if things didn’t happen here, but we will have to have a rethink, I suppose.”
Richard Hughes, the winning jockey, added: “I felt sorry for the horse - he arrived there a furlong out at Newbury and I was more surprised than anyone that he actually got there because we got him home and he had poison in his foot.
“So he had a good reason and everyone was there slamming the little horse - he deserves everything he gets now.
"A child could ride him when he is right. At Newbury, he was hanging and he wasn’t happy. He was pulling and that’s not Paco Boy.
“Today he just settled, eased up there - it was like a bit of work - and the only worry was that I was a little bit longer kicking than I had to be, but he was electric today.
“I felt sorry for this horse, with people knocking him. They can’t just accept he’s a top class horse!”
DISAPPOINTING RESULT FOR GODOLPHIN
The two Godolphin horses, the 9/4 favourite Gladiatorus and Alexandros, finished sixth and eighth.
Saeed bin Suroor, the Godolphin trainer, commented: “They ran disappointingly.”
Ahmed Ajtebi, Gladiatorus’s rider, said: “He was not half the horse he was in Dubai. He seemed a different horse.”
Frankie Dettori explained: “Alexandros did not feel 100 per cent when going to post and in the latter stages of the race it seemed that something was pinching him. I eased him right down when he was beaten.”

Winner’s quotes
FATHER AND SON-IN-LAW FULL OF PRAISE FOR THEIR ‘LITTLE HORSE’
Paco Boy silenced those who doubted his ability to stay a mile when cruising to an impressive length-and-a-half victory in the Queen Anne Stakes.
His trainer Richard Hannon said: “If he doesn’t stay a mile then he stayed better than the others. It doesn’t bother me if other people knock him. We know he’s a good horse. At Newbury (after the Lockinge Stakes) he wasn’t moving very well after the race and we’ve tried to get him right again. I couldn’t be more delighted with the little horse.”
Looking ahead to options for Paco Boy, who is owned by the Calvera Partnership 2, later in the season, he added: “He could now go to the Prix de la Foret or possibly even the July Cup. There are so many options - the Sussex or the Prix Jacques le Marois. If I get my way with the owners, he won’t go to America (for the Breeders’ Cup).”
Hannon’s son-in-law and winning jockey Richard Hughes said: “I couldn’t be more pleased. I’ve had months of people crabbing the horse and saying he doesn’t get a mile, but he’s proved them all wrong. I just had to turn him on a mile and a half from home and he came alive under me.
“I wasn’t worried about Gladiatorus going off so fast - it’s hard to get home at Ascot up that hill. For once I was happy to be on a little horse as I was able to squeeze him through the gap. He’s such an easy horse to ride.”

RELIEF FOR HUGHES
“Relief, relief, thank God,” said jockey Richard Hughes, after Paco Boy dispelled any doubts that he might not stay a mile, by winning the Queen Anne Stakes, with an impressive surge in the final two furlongs.
“It felt like being on the ropes. He’d gone to Newbury and I knew the horse wasn’t right then. Always after a bad run, you feel a little worried,” said Hughes.
“[In the final stages] I didn’t think we could get there, then he turns it on like a machine. I’m just thrilled for the horse,” said Hughes.
JOCKEYS ON GROUND
“Good ground” - Richard Hughes, Paco Boy
“Perfect ground” - Frankie Dettori, Alexandros
“Good, quick ground” - Seb Sanders, Arabian Gleam
“Beautiful ground out there” - Francis Norton, Dream Eater
“Good ground” - Micky Fenton, Mac Love
FIRST RACE PLACED QUOTES
QUEEN ANNE STAKES (GROUP 1)
FANSHAWE DELIGHTED WITH CESARE
The eight-year-old Cesare ran a superb race on his seasonal comeback to go down by just a length and a half when second to Paco Boy in the opening Queen Anne Stakes.
“Horses like him are so few and far between, because he has had his problems but always comes back,” said Cesare’s trainer James Fanshawe. “He had a foot problem last year and then did a splint back in March. All being well I’d imagine he’ll have his next run in the Summer Mile back here.”
Chris Richardson, managing director to owners Cheveley Park Stud, said: “The horse just loves this place and I’m delighted for James. He has done a fantastic job to get the horse to run so well here first time out and it’s a real compliment to his team.”
William Haggas was equally pleased with the run of last season’s Jersey Stakes winner Aqlaam to bounce back from a disappointing run on his seasonal debut in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury.
“I’m so thrilled and really delighted that he’s on his way back,” said Haggas. “I knew we were not there yet but he’s coming along now and we can put that first run of the year behind us. He’s getting better but he’s not there yet.
“When you have a horse injured like him it is difficult to get them back so I’m really pleased and there are no plans at the moment, I’ll discuss it with Richard (Hills).”
Fourth-placed Main Aim is likely to step back in distances. “We were very pleased but I’d say he’ll go back to the trips he’s been winning over,” said trainer Sir Michael Stoute. “You couldn’t say he didn’t get the mile but he’s just more effective over shorter trips.”
THE WINNER - SCENIC BLAST (AUS)
5 b/br g Scenic - Daughter’s Charm (AUS) (Delgado (USA))

Scenic Blast
A son of Scenic, who dead-heated in the 1988 Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket, England, Scenic Blast has emerged as one of Australia’s leading sprinters over the past two seasons. He was sold for AUS $85,000 as a yearling at the WA Magic Millions sale. His first season included victories in Listed company at Ascot (Australia) and in a Grade Three contest at Caulfield, both coming over six furlongs, while he also scored over five furlongs at Belmont Park (Perth) in handicap company. He also ran extremely well in defeat on two occasions, both in Group One company, when taking the runner-up spot behind Weekend Hustler in the Caulfield Guineas and third behind the same horse in the Coolmore Stud Stakes. Last year saw Scenic Blast win two of his four starts, with both victories coming in handicap company at Ascot and Caulfield. He disappointed at the end of 2008 when stepped back up to Pattern company in the Group Two Memsie Stakes at Caulfield in August, but this poor run was attributed to a wind problem and the horse was subsequently operated on. The operation certainly proved the key to Scenic Blast this year. After finishing second over five furlongs in a handicap at Ascot in January, he caused something of an upset when landing the first leg of the Global Sprint Challenge 2009, the Group One Coolmore Lightning Stakes over five furlongs, at Flemington on January 31. In that contest he had the likes of Weekend Hustler and Apache Cat in arrears. Next time out on February 21, he finished fifth behind Swiss Ace in the Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield before getting the better of that rival by a head when successful, coming with a breathtaking last-to-first run, in the 22-runner Group One Newmarket Handicap (colloquially known as the “Sprinters Melbourne Cup”) over six furlongs at Flemington on March 7. The horse has been stabled with Peter Chapple-Hyam ahead of his Royal Ascot bid. He won with an impressive burst of speed in the Group One King’s Stand Stakes over five furlongs. The horse will now be aimed at the Darley July Cup at Newmarket on July 10.

Elio Anthony Galante & Partners
Elio Galante, who owns Scenic Blast in partnership with nine others, is managing director of Beaumonde Homes, a Perth-based house builder that specialises in the construction of quality single and two storey homes on the Perth coastal strip. His wife Jacqui is also heavily involved with the company, which was established in 1986. Galante has been in horse ownership for a number of years. Good horses he has been involved with include the 2004 Group One Victoria Derby winner Plastered and star sprinter Scenic Blast.
Dan Morton AUS
Dan Morton, 36, is based in Perth, Western Australia, and is the son of trainer Len Morton, who enjoyed his biggest success with Muros in the 1978 Brisbane Cup and handled the decent mare Celestial Show, who finished third in the 2001 Caulfield Cup. Morton senior moved away from Perth to train in Melbourne in order to chase the better prizes offered in the east before moving back to Perth when the quality of racing improved in Western Australia. Dan initially rode as an apprentice jockey for his father before becoming too heavy. In 2004, Len handed over the training licence to Dan, but subsequently started training a small team of horses again in his own right. In addition to Scenic Blast, Dan has also trained the high-class middle-distance performer Scenic Shot, winner of the Grade One XXXX Gold Doomben Cup at Doomben last month.
Steven Arnold
Born and raised in Alice Springs, in the Northern Territory of Australia, Steven Arnold, 34, began his riding career as an apprentice to his mother, Sheila, before moving on to the stables of leading Adelaide trainer Ted Cameron. After six months, he was lured to the yard of Lee Freedman, but found it hard to make an impact on the Melbourne scene as a 17-year-old and returned to Adelaide to ride for Cameron’s son Russell. The partnership flourished and Arnold won local jockey premierships as an apprentice and senior rider, before the jockey decided to try his luck riding in Macau. When Cameron decided to move to Melbourne in 1998, Arnold returned to Australia soon after and the pair enjoyed a superb spring campaign in 2000, culminating with victory in the Thousand Guineas with All Time High. Arnold also struck up a successful relationship with another Cameron-trained horse, Bomber Bill, who won the Australia Stakes and the Goodwood Handicap and contested the Golden Shaheen in Dubai and the Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin. Other horses to have been ridden by Arnold include the Bart Cummings-trained Magical Miss, who won the Thousand Guineas and the VRC Oaks in 2001, and the outstanding sprinter Toledo, who landed the Australia Stakes in 2002. In total, Arnold has 15 Group One victories to his name with the most recent being two successes this season with Scenic Blast in the Coolmore Lightning Stakes and the Crown Newmarket Handicap. As well as being one of Australia’s most successful jockeys, Arnold is also one the tallest at 5' 9" and he doesn’t ride below 55kg, which has restricted his opportunities in some of the leading handicaps. He will be having his first ride in the UK at Royal Ascot.
SECOND RACE WINNING QUOTES
KING’S STAND STAKES (GROUP 1)
SCENIC BLAST - INITIAL WINNING QUOTES
Trainer Dan Morton: "I couldn’t be happier. Everything has just gone so to plan since we have been here and it’s just been fantastic.
"I was very happy where he was in running - Steven knows this horse a treat and rode him perfectly.
"We know we have a very good horse and that’s why we are here but, with all the travelling and all of the rest of it, it’s a big thing to get through and to compete when you are here. But, luckily enough, everything went to plan."
Jockey Steven Arnold: "It was a super effort. He travelled really well and I actually got there too soon. I had to pop out behind because he was going too well and he soon put paid to them with a furlong to go - a bit early but it was a super effort.
"I probably could have waited a bit longer because I got there quite early but he was really strong at the two furlong marker and I thought now or never and he has put paid to them quickly, which was good.
"I won’t advise the trainer whether to run him on Saturday because he has done a magnificent job with this horse - to bring him halfway round the world and have him spot on today. I think that the plan wasn’t to run him but we will see how it works out.
"It’s extraordinary to win here. I know how tough it at places like this - this is the best place - and I know how tough it is to succeed here. To be lucky enough to get on a really good horse, sitting and steering basically, it’s pretty good."
Second Race - King’s Stand Stakes - Winner’s Quotes
SCENIC BLASTS THE OPPOSITION
Scenic Blast became the fourth Australian winner of the King’s Stand Stakes in seven renewals, when the five-year-old’s blistering mid-race burst settled the race early.
“It’s fantastic, for everything to go to plan like it did, and everything really has gone to plan,” said Dan Morton, the trainer, for whom it was a first Royal Ascot outing.
Not quite everything had gone to plan prior to the race, as the horse arrived at Ascot racecourse without his vaccination certificate, which had to be faxed over from Newmarket, where the horse has been stabled. Without the certificate, he would not have been allowed to race.
Once on the race track, though, Scenic Blast always looked like the winner. “The horse travelled good and it just worked out beautifully. I was really happy in running I could see that Stephen had a handful. He closed on them really easy, and Fleeting Spirit was coming to him at the end and the line couldn’t come quick enough for me in the end,” said Morton.
“You just sort of dream about these things, you don’t believe they’ll come off. We’re not trailblazers, there’s a fair few Aussies have done it before us,” he added
When asked if he thought he had the best sprinter in the world, Morton responded: “Today, I do.”
Jockey Steve Arnold endorsed the trainer’s view. “I’ve never had a horse with the explosion he has so I wasn’t surprised he picked them up so quickly. I went reasonably early and got to the front a long way out,” he said.
Scenic Blast will next race in the July Cup at Newmarket on July 10th. “He won’t run on Saturday. I had the Jubilee as a back-stop, just in case,” said the trainer.
For the owners, Elio Anthony Galante and Partners, a group of property developers from Western Australia, it was also their first runner at Royal Ascot. All but one of the nine owners had travelled over to watch the race, and Galanta himself, was almost overcome with emotion.
“Words can’t describe it, they can’t. He’s just an amazing horse. He’s travelled halfway round the world and done this. That’s my fourth Group One winner of the year; Scenic Blast has won three and City Trots has won one,” said Galante, who received his trophy from the four-time Olympic champion Matthew Pinsent.

FILLIES CHASE HOME AUSSIE STAR AND FLEETING SPIRIT MAY BE BACK FOR MORE
Two fillies laid down the biggest challenge to Australian sprinter Scenic Blast with Fleeting Spirit and three-year-old Anglezarke chasing him home to take second and third in the King’s Stand Stakes.
Andy Stewart is better known for his association with jump racing and horses such as Big Buck’s, My Will and Celestial Halo but he enjoyed his foray into the flat with a game second place for the filly in whom he has a share, Fleeting Spirit. The Jeremy Noseda-trained four-year-old finished three-quarters of a length behind the Australian raider.
Stewart said: “We’re delighted with her. She’s finished very close to an Australian superstar. That’s good for racing and good for Ascot. Ryan Moore said he didn’t know how quickly one (his draw) was going compared to 15 (Scenic Blast) but equally 15 didn’t know how fast one was going. Well done to the Australians.
“We’ll look at our options and see how she is - it’s a big ask for a filly to come back on Saturday (for the Golden Jubilee Stakes) but we won’t rule it out just yet. We’ll talk to Jeremy and see how she is tomorrow.”
Tim Easterby, trainer of third-placed Anglezarke said: “She ran a cracker. She’s always been good and has just got better. I think she’ll get better still. We’ve brought them here before and we know what it takes - I really felt she’d run a very good race and she has.”
Dane O’Neill, rider of Amour Propre, who finished tenth, said: “He just didn’t quite fire today. He didn’t pick up like he can do for whatever reason but I think the winner is top class.”
THIRD RACE WINNING QUOTES
ST JAMES’S PALACE STAKES (GROUP 1)
CRAFTSMAN IS MASTER
Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Mastercraftsman justified 5/6 favouritism to take the Group One St James’s Palace Stakes by a neck after fighting off the persistent challenge of Delegator.
Trainer Aidan O’Brien was full of praise for the winner and said: “It’s unbelievable - a great performance from both jockey and horse. He’s an amazing horse - speed, stamina, soft ground, fast ground - they all come alike to him. It was a great performance by the horse and a marvellous performance by the jockey.
"His most impressive performance was in a Group One over six furlongs on good to firm ground in the Heinz (Phoenix Stakes) last season and he’s a Guineas winner and a St James’s Palace Stakes winner - an amazing horse.
"When everybody decides to step him up to a mile and a quarter I don’t think that he will have a problem with that either. He’s just one of those great horses. He’s becoming very like a Giant’s Causeway, the sort of horses that don’t mind a mile or a mile and a quarter.
“He’s a big, straightforward horse and is very uncomplicated - he just jumps out and you let him roll. He’s a great cruiser with loads of class.
“Johnny said he’s very idle when he hits the front but watching the race I knew that Johnny didn’t think that he was beat.
“We were very happy with the horse two weeks after he ran in the Guineas at Newmarket, we knew where we were with him in comparison to the horses around him.”
Jockey Johnny Murtagh added: "It was going very well - there was a nice pace and I pulled him into the straight. I committed him early enough and he was a bit lazy when he hit the front. He did hang on and wait for Delegator but when Jimmy came to me, he came there good, but you can see that my horse’s head is down and he is really trying.
“I knew it was going to be a battle but I was getting well on top in the final 10 strides.
"He gave 110 per cent, he’s brave, courageous and he’s like all of the great horses I ride for Ballydoyle - they never know when they are beaten, he’s just like Henrythenavigator and Duke Of Marmalade last year. He’s right up there with the best.
"After winning a Guineas and a St James’s Palace Stakes over a mile, he’s not short of speed and I think that he is a true champion. The way he did it today, I think that he deserves a lot of credit.
“I think he didn’t handle the hill at Newmarket and I was confident he could turn the tables from that day. A lot was made about (him winning so easily because of) the ground in Ireland but it was perfect going today and I think a good horse goes on any ground.”
Looking ahead to Yeats in Thursday’s Gold Cup, Murtagh added: “I’m trying not to think about that one and get today and tomorrow out of the way first. It’s going to be huge for us and Ascot is the place where he comes into his own. Like me he excels himself on the big occasions, two and a half miles and the big crowd here bring out the best in him.”

‘WE WERE RIGHT’ SAYS AN EMOTIONAL MEEHAN AS DELEGATOR POSTS BATTLING PERFORMANCE
Delegator, who was second to Sea The Stars in the 2000 Guineas, again had to settle for runner-up honours when being out-battled by odds-on favourite Mastercraftsman in the St James’s Palace Stakes.
The colt’s trainer Brian Meehan said: “Fifty yards out he looked like he might just get his head in front, but the other horse came back strongly. But he’s had a hell of a run and that will silence the knockers. Royal Ascot always brings the emotions out, but they were wrong and we were right. We said he was a good horse and we were so confident about him before the Craven and we were right.”
Looking ahead to plans for later in the season, he added: “We’ll see - I won’t make any hasty plans just yet.”
Karl Burke, trainer of third-placed Lord Shanakill, said: “When he went with them I knew he’d keep battling to the line. He has an entry in the Prix Jean Prat and we’ll look at the Sussex, but we’ll see how he comes out of this.
“I’m just so pleased to get him back. He’s never let me down, but I let him down in the Guineas by running him. He’s been showing us at home that he’s been back to somewhere near his best and we were never worried about him getting the mile. People kept saying that he doesn’t stay, that he’s a sprinter but we never thought that. Then they said that he hadn’t trained on and all the usual stuff, but I think he’s proved today that he’s trained on, he gets a mile and he’s very, very good horse.”
Fourth race - The Coventry Stakes
Winner’s quotes
HANNON HAILS ‘NEXT YEAR’S HORSE’
Canford Cliffs streaked home for a six-length victory in the Coventry Stakes to leave his excited trainer dreaming of next year and Guineas glory. The son of Tagula was quoted at 8/1 for next season’s 2000 Guineas after his highly impressive performance.
Richard Hannon, who was completing a 10.9/1 double on the day after the opening race victory of Paco Boy, said: “The Coventry is a very hard race to win but the way he’s won it was fantastic. I love this horse, he’s such a laidback character. He’s so easy at home - you wouldn’t know he was in the yard.
“Richard (Hughes) rode him work one morning and said ‘wow, this is a racehorse’. Then he said today that he ran away with him and when he shook the reins he went on again. It would be hard to find another one as good as him.
“We may look at the July Stakes but this horse wants looking after - he could be next year’s horse. We’re going to have to be careful with him this year. I wish we had two or three more who could go with him.
“If he was on of Aidan’s (‘Brien) horses, he would probably be 4/6 for next year’s Guineas!”
He continued: “If we hadn’t had a winner today we’d have been a bit shy for the rest of the week. Those were our two big chances.”
Richard Hughes teamed up again with his father-in-law to take the winning ride and was full of praise for his mount, saying: “I’ve never ridden a horse like him in my life. I’ve never known a horse to run away with me and win a race. All I was trying to do was slow him down. He was a little bit lit up going to the start and he jumped really quickly. When the boys came whooshing up beside me he was very keen and I’ve never known a horse pull that hard in a race.
“The first day I sat on him I knew he was something special. I don’t want to talk him up too much but he has gone and done something really special today.”
“I rode a few canters on him and liked him a lot. I thought he would be ready in July because he was a bit big and a bit long but I gave him a half-speed one morning and I have never ridden anything like it in my life. I said to the boss that this is something serious.
“He went off 10 lengths in front of two other lads and they got a bollocking because they couldn’t lie up with him. It was an unbelievable bit of work.
“We were in the stalls quick and he jumped really quickly and the boys were whooshing up beside me which made him a bit keen. At home he does all of his work in behind.
“He’s the best horse I have ever ridden - he’s a freak.”
Fourth Race - The Coventry Stakes - Placed Quotes
XTENSION RAISES HIS GAME
Trainer Clive Cox was all smiles after Xtension came from nowhere to claim second place in the Coventry Stakes, six lengths behind the winner Canford Cliffs.
“The winner’s very special, but mine cost 15,000 Euros in a day when a Euro was a Euro,” said the trainer.
“He’s a lovely horse and we knew he would improve on his first outing [a maiden victory at Goodwood].
“The fantastic things about him is his temperament, he’s so quiet. He’s lazy at home, but he’s a Xaar and I wasn’t going to beat him up.
“The dreams have gone up a gear after that, but we are going to gradually see how we go.
“I’ve got my eye on Pattern races in the autumn,” said Cox.
Fifth Race - The Ascot Handicap - Winner Quotes
JUDGETHEMOMENT
ALMOST MISSED THE MOMENT
The well-backed Judgethemoment proved his stamina, as his trainer believed he would, resolutely hanging on for victory in the Ascot Handicap by half a length. It was trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam’s first Royal Ascot success, but it was so close to not happening at all.
“I have to be totally honest, on Sunday he wasn’t running, and on Monday we were fifty-fifty. I have to thank Doctor Carroll and I have to thank my vet Dave for the great job they’ve done - and of course all the staff at the stables.
“He galloped on Saturday and did a brilliant piece of work, and on Sunday I thought I’ll just pubt him on the walker for 45 minutes. And he stood on himself behind and gave himself a one-inch cut on his off-hind leg on the coronet band. So, it was touch and go.
“I backed him up for Saturday, just in case [The Queen Alexandra Stakes]. Then in the back of my head I’m thinking, well I’ve got the Northumberland Plate.
“We waited until this morning at half past six, and Dr Carroll said ‘perfect’, the vet said he was one hundred percent. So, we loaded him up and off we went.
“And we had a bad trip down here too. It took four and a half hours and he didn’t get here till twelve-thirty. Hardly an ideal preparation,” said the trainer.
The Australian-born Chapple-Hyam was in no doubt that this was her best-ever training success. “It has to be the best. It’s Royal Ascot, you can’t get any higher than this.”
Judgethemoment also brought jockey Richard Hughes his third success of the day - an 88.4/1 treble . “I’ve had such good rides - I’ve never had five better rides in one day,” he said.
“Turning for home, I saw Martin Dwyer [on Ermine Sea] go up in the air and I thought do I go left or right. Luckily I went the right way,” added the jockey.
FIFTH RACE PLACED QUOTES
ASCOT STAKES (HANDICAP)
SESENTA DELIGHTS RUBY
Connections of the Willie Mullins-trained Sesenta were delighted with the mare’s effort when finishing half a length second to Judgethemoment in the Ascot Stakes.
Jockey Ruby Walsh was representing Mullins and said: “She ran a cracker and looked to me like she got a good run. There was nothing Seamie (Heffernan) could have done differently. I’m not sure where you’d go now, but there is a two-mile handicap at the Curragh on Derby Day.
“I’m just here representing Willie but fingers crossed I’ll be back riding on Friday.”
The David Pipe-trained Royal Rationale was three-quarters of a length further back in third and the trainer’s father Martin said: “It was a great run, he was given a brilliant ride and the finish gave the owners a real thrill. It was his first run over the trip and he showed he stays and as far as I know the plan is to run over hurdles during the summer.”
MURTAGH BANNED FOR SEVEN DAYS
Jockey Johnny Murtagh has picked up bans totalling seven days this afternoon.
Murtagh was suspended for a day (June 30) for using his whip with excessive frequency when winning the St James’s Palace Stakes aboard Mastercraftsman and he was banned for a further five days for careless riding and a day for not riding out on Kayf Aramis in the Ascot Stakes.
SIXTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
WINDSOR CASTLE STAKES (LISTED)
TIGER STRIKES FOR AMERICA
History was made in the concluding Windsor Castle Stakes when Strike The Tiger became the first ever American-trained horse to win at Ascot when holding on by a neck to beat Fratellino.
The winner, who was giving top US jockey John Velazquez a first Ascot success, is trained in California by Wesley Ward, who said: “I bred and raised the horse so to bring him over to win at Royal Ascot is something special, especially with my father and son being here. He’ll be heading home to race now. This is a beautiful place and I’ve been very impressed with everything that’s gone on.
“It’s great to prove that you can bring a horse over from America and be competitive here and I hope this win will open doors. This is a real international meet and I think trainers at home have been apprehensive about coming over but they will see they can come here, win a here and then go home ready to run. I hope this causes a lot of the better horses to come over.
“This was a great race for me to win but I know it is not one of the strongest here and hopefully my better two-year-olds can go on and do well.
“We have very few opportunities on turf at home but when I did take him to gallop on grass at River Downs, a small track, he really stepped up - he’s just a different horse on it. I think he’s going to be a special horse.
“I’m very pleased with all the horses but the filly (Jealous Again) I’m running tomorrow (in the Queen Mary Stakes) is very special. She’s much better than this horse and I’m really expecting her to run a fantastic race although I know it will be stiffer competition.
“I’m just a quiet guy and don’t normally even wear a suit but today I was going to put on what you’re meant to.”
Velazquez added: “You watch this meeting on TV, thinking you’d love to be there so to win here is very special.
“I was very proud of him and at the end he kept giving me a little more, he was very game.
“I asked Frankie a bit about the course but watched all the earlier races and walked the course. I thought it was a bit better ground on the left so decided to switch from right to left. I’d like to come here any time.”

LONGSHOTS FILL THE PLACES IN THE FINALE
Strike The Tiger, the first American-trained winner at Royal Ascot was overlooked in the betting at 33/1 and his two nearest pursuers were also decent prices as fellow 33/1 shot Fratellino finished runner-up and Di Stefano, at 25/1, was third.
Alan McCabe, trainer of Fratellino, said: “It’s a pity the flights weren’t cancelled from America but he’s been a tough and consistent horse all year. He didn’t know what price he was and he’s done nothing but thrive all year.
“He was coming back at the winner and he’ll easily get six (furlongs). We’ll take him home now and give him a bit of a break.”
Mick Channon, who sent out third-placed Di Stefano, was confident his colt would run a big race and said: “We thought he was good enough to come here and thankfully he’s proved us right. He’s a young horse and he’s just coming right so we’ll see where we’ll go from here.”
He added: “He’ll be fine over five or six furlongs and we’ll just see how he comes out of this first before we decide on his next race.”
GOING - ONLY LIGHT WATERING LIKELY
Clerk Of The Course, Chris Stickels, reported that there had been lots of positive comments from the jockeys following the opening day of Royal Ascot.
“The ground’s in great shape. We put four millimetres of water on it last night, but I would only consider a tiny bit tonight.
“We are contemplating just putting on what was lost through evaporation today - probably only a couple millimetres, I’ve yet to go and check that. We are not forecast any rain tonight,” said Stickels.
HUGHES IN PRIME POSITION FOR TOP JOCKEY
A hat-trick of successes on the opening day of Royal Ascot, with Paco Boy, Canford Cliffs and Judgethemoment, has ensured that Richard Hughes is now a very short price to be top jockey at the meeting, with totesport offering a mere 8/15.
Totesport prices: 8/15 Richard Hughes, 2/1 Ryan Moore, 8/1 Johnny Murtagh, 25/1 Bar.
CROWD
The official crowd figure for the first day of Royal Ascot was 38,625. The figure for the opening day of the 2008 meeting was 42,092.
TOTE TURNOVER
The official totepool on course cash turnover for the opening day was £1,211,784, six per cent down on last year.

BUSY TOTE
Royal Ascot – totepool facts and figures
For the tote, Royal Ascot is one of the busiest race meetings of the year and one which the company hopes will prove to be recession proof this year.
Total turnover for the five days of the meeting is expected to be just over £7.5million on course and the tote will have a total of 540 members of staff working on each of the five days – which is 100 more than last year.
The totejackpot and toteplacepot bets are very strong at the Royal meeting and with £50,000 guaranteed in the jackpot for each of the five days, the bet should prove to be very popular. The jackpot pool reached £353,549 on the Thursday of last year, while pools of around £500,000 are expected in the placepot daily.
The totesuper7 is a new addition to Royal Ascot this year and the current rollover stands at £650,801. There are four races from Royal Ascot on the opening day of the meeting (with the other three at Thirsk) and the tote hope there will be significant interest in the bet.
totewin beat SP in 20 of the 30 races at Royal Ascot last year and a £10 bet on all 30 winners paid £1,203 more than the returned SP.
“Royal Ascot is one of our busiest weeks of the racing calendar and although turnover has been down at many of the big meetings so far this year, we fully expect the next five days to buck the trend,’ said totepool spokesman George Primarolo.
TARTAN BEARS HOPES OF BALLYMACOLL TEAM
Last year’s Derby runner-up Tartan Bearer is the ante-post favourite to give owner/breeder Ballymacoll Stud a first victory in tomorrow’s Prince Of Wales’s Stakes, a race won in the last two years by a pair of outstanding colts, the five-time Group One winner Duke Of Marmalade and Horse of the Year, Manduro.
Trainer Sir Michael Stoute is bidding for his third win in the race, having initially taken the 1981 renewal with Hard Fought and then striking again ten years later with Sheikh Mohammed’s Stagecraft.
Tartan Bearer, who won the Gordon Richards Stakes at Sandown on his only outing so far this season, looks to have stiff opposition from a pair of French raiders in last year’s Classic hero Vision d’Etat and Prix d’Ispahan winner Never On Sunday, who hails from the in-form Jean-Claude Rouget stable.
There would, however, be no more popular winner than Twice Over, trained by Henry Cecil, who holds the record for the greatest number of Royal Ascot winners, his tally of 70 including seven winners at the 1987 Royal Meeting. Owned and bred by Khalid Abdulla, whose Cecil-trained Placerville won this race in 1993, Twice Over has finished third in two runs this season, including the Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes in May.
The Lockinge winner Virtual reopposes him on Wednesday and is one of two contenders for trainer John Gosden, who won back-to-back runnings of the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes with Muhtarram in 1994 and 1995. Gosden’s other runner, Tazeez, stepped up from his Cambridgeshire victory at the end of last season with a win in the Earl Of Sefton Stakes back at Newmarket but has since run disappointingly behind Never On Sunday in the Prix d’Ispahan.
Godolphin, who won this race from 2000 to 2002 with Dubai Millennium, Fanatstic Light and Grandera, field the former French-trained Trincot, while the line-up is completed by the German-bred and -trained Estejo, winner of the Group One Premio Roma last November.

GLADIATORUS - FRIEND OR FOE?
The opening race of Royal Ascot 2009, the Group One Queen Anne Stakes (2:30) is proving a conundrum for backers, with the favourite, Gladiatorus, winner of the $5m Dubai Duty Free at Nad Al Sheba in March, making friends and losing them in equal measure. Coral report significant support for the 5/2 favourite, but Matt Doyle at Sky Bet asserts, “We can’t give away Gladiatorus.” Sky Bet have seen money for Alexandros, the nominal second-string for Godolphin, and have shortened that horse’s price to 7/1 from 8/1, a move matched by Paddy Power. With Frankie Dettori aboard Alexandros, the likelihood is that 7/1 will soon disappear.
In the King’s Stand Stakes (3:05), the interest centres on the two principals Scenic Blast and Amour Propre. With Australian-trained horses having won three of the last six editions of the race (Miss Andretti 2007, Takeover Target 2006, Choisir 2003), Scenic Blast has predictably come in for plenty of support. William Hill and Paddy Power have the Dan Morton-trained horse as 3/1 clear favourite, from 4/1 and 7/2 respectively, and VC Bet, Boylesports and totesport have Scenic Blast at 11/4. In consequence, Amour Propre, who looked so impressive in the Palace House Stakes last month, is now generally available at 4/1, from 7/2.
The St James’s Palace Stakes (3:45) is the third successive Group One on the opening day’s card. Mastercraftsman, from the Aidan O’Brien yard, is the warm favourite, following his bloodless victory in the Irish 2000 Guineas, but Ladbrokes report some interest in the Michael Stoute-trained Evasive, who was behind both Delegator and Mastercraftsman in the 2000 Guineas. Ladbrokes have Evasive at 5/1.
In the Coventry Stakes (4:20), the focus is on Moran Gra, the Joanna Morgan-trained colt, who has been supported across the board. The 20/1 available earlier today has long gone; William Hill and VC Bet offering 16/1, and totesport and Paddy Power, just 14/1. Paddy Power have also taken some money on Raine’s Cross, at 14/1 from 20/1.
Stamina is the issue in the Ascot Stakes (4:55), and there appears to be some confidence in the fact that Judgethemoment will get every yard of the two and a half mile race. The Jane Chapple-Hyam-trained colt is now 8/1, from 9/1, with Boylesports and Paddy Power, and 8/1, from 11/1, with Coral.
Angel Pursuit has proved popular in the Windsor Castle Stakes (5:30), shortening from 5/1 joint-favourite, to 9/2 clear favourite with both Boylesports and Paddy Power.
YEATS BIDS FOR GREATNESS
Ascot’s grandstand roof could be in danger at around 3.50pm on Thursday should Yeats, the most popular Flat horse of recent seasons, capture the £250,000 Group One Gold Cup.
The eight-year-old is bidding to create history by becoming the first horse ever to win the two and a half mile event, a race first staged in 1807, four times.
Yeats was home-bred by his owners, John and Sue Magnier of Coolmore Stud and Barronstown Stud’s David and Diane Nagle, and made his debut for trainer Aidan O’Brien when winning a Curragh two-year-old maiden in September, 2003.
Although he won the Group Two Derrinstown Derby Trial in April, 2004, his classic campaign was curtailed by injury but he bounced back the following year to win the Group One Coronation Cup at Epsom.
His 2006 season began in the Gold Cup, when he beat Reefscape by four lengths under Kieren Fallon. He returned to Ascot 12 months later to win the two and a half mile showpiece by a length and a half from Geordieland with Mick Kinane in the saddle.
He beat the same rival last year by five lengths, this time with Johnny Murtagh riding, and looks set to start favourite on Thursday on despite being well beaten on unsuitably heavy ground on his seasonal debut at Navan in April.
Yeats has already earned a place in the history books after joining the Francois Boutin-trained Sagaro, who took the Gold Cup from 1975 to 1977, as only the second three-time winner of the Group One contest but - if successful on Thursday - he will break new ground.
Geordieland, also now an eight-year-old, will again be in opposition in this year’s Gold Cup, and heads to Ascot in good form after winning the Group Two Henry II Stakes at Sandown, with the runner-up that day, Patkai, set to reoppose.
The Godolphin stable has won the Gold Cup four times before and go three-handed into this year’s running with Eastern Anthem, Sagara and Veracity.
Two of Yeats’ former stablemates will be in opposition. Hindu Kush, bought for 120,000 guineas by owner Marwan Koukash at Tattersalls in October, won a Leopardstown Listed race for trainer David Nicholls in May, while Washington Irving - who finished fifth in last year’s Derby for Aidan O’Brien - will be having his second start for trainer Howard Johnson after being bought for 300,000 guineas by owner Graham Wylie.
The field is completed by the John Gosden-trained Centennial.

Winning jockey:-Name: Arnold, Steven Background: Born and raised in Alice Springs, in the Northern Territory of Australia, Steven Arnold, 34, began his riding career as an apprentice to his mother, Sheila, before moving on to the stables of leading Adelaide trainer Ted Cameron. As well as being one of Australia’s most successful jockeys, Arnold is also one the tallest at 5' 9" and he doesn’t ride below 55kg, which has restricted his opportunities in some of the leading handicaps.
