FIRST RACE WINNING QUOTES
CHESHAM STAKES (LISTED)
ROYAL WIN IN OPENER
The Queen had her first Royal Ascot winner for nine years when the Richard Hannon-trained Free Agent took the opening Chesham Stakes. It was the Queen’s 20th Royal Ascot winner in total and her first since Blueprint won the 1999 Hardwicke Stakes.
“The Queen was absolutely thrilled and has the horse passed the post she said ‘I’ve done it’,” said John Warren, the Queen’s racing advisor.
“There was a slight concern because he is a May foal and Richard (Hannon) rang a month ago and said that if we wanted to try and win the Chesham we needed to crack on. Then he won so nicely first time at Leicester that we thought why not give this a go.
“But the ground was so fast that there was a lot of phone calls to and fro this morning about whether we should run.
“Today was the objective so we’ll have to see what the summer brings and see how he develops.
“The (Queen’s) gamble is breeding in its own right, she puts down 14-15 foals each year so it’s hard to compete with the big guns.”
Hannon added: “It’s lovely to have a winner here for HM, it’s fantastic. It’s very rare that she can come racing so it’s great to win when she is here on a day like this. It’s a terribly important win.
“He’s a very nice horse but backward. I thought after a furlong and a half that he was in trouble but he’s gone through them well and was running on at the end.
“He probably won’t run again until the back-end, maybe he’d return in something like the Champagne at Doncaster or could miss the rest of this year and wait for next season because mentally he’s still very backward.”
The Derby is the only Classic that the Queen has not won as an owner and Free Agent was quoted as short as 25/1 with Paddy Power for Epsom next year.
First Race - The Chesham Stakes
RICHARD HUGHES - WINNING RIDER
Richard Hughes, who brought Free Agent from last to first, said: “The Queen was very gracious. To ride a winner at Royal Ascot is great but to ride one for the Queen at Royal Ascot is special.
“Richard (Hannon - the trainer) and I were both worried about the ground. Once I cantered down, I knew it was OK - he floated to post and that is exactly the way he went down at Leicester (when he won first time out) .
“I jumped OK but I got squeezed out after going a furlong and a half - with one wanting to go left and one wanting to go right. So I thought I’d better take out.
“Then I am sitting back on the rail but he came through good and in the last furlong I left him to stick his head out - he was getting tired - and he did so.
“He is a lovely horse, very placid. It was an important winner.”

SEAWAY’S PERFECT SECOND
For trainer John Gosden, the fact that Seaway came second in the Chesham Stakes was the perfect start to the final day of Royal Ascot.
“Our owner [Princess Haya of Jordan] and The Queen get on very well and we are very, very happy with the result,” the trainer said, acknowledging that he wouldn’t want to rain on Her Majesty’s parade.
“Both the winner and our horse are Dr Fong colts and they were the joint favourites and the race panned out as you might expect,” he added.
Karl Burke, trainer of the third-placed Markyg, was not surprised by his horse’s run, which belied his starting price of 22/1.
“He is a nice horse and it was a good race he ran when he was fourth at Hamilton in his first outing. This race came a bit quick - we only had 10 days between races - but there’s only one Chesham,” he said.
“He ran a good race and, if anything, because the gaps were closing he went earlier than ideal,” he said.
Race One - Listed Chesham Stakes
GROUND QUOTES AFTER THE FIRST RACE
The consensus among the jockeys riding in the first race was that the rain overnight and this morning had affected the ground.
Winning rider Richard Hughes revealed: “It’s not as fast as on any of the other days this week.”
Jimmy Fortune partnered Seaway to finish runner-up and he said: “The ground is nearer to good now.”
Jim Crowley, who rode Tudor Key to finish fourth, reported: “It’s good ground. They’re just getting their toe in a fraction and kicking the top off but I don’t think it’s changed too much.”
Johnny Murtagh, rider of ninth-placed Imperial Guest, said: “It’s lovely ground.”
Frankie Dettori commented: “The ground is easier than yesterday. It’s a bit loose on top.”
Royston Ffrench opined: “It’s on the easy side now.”
Bad Beat came home sixth and his rider, Neil Callan, said: “It’s just marginally on the slower side of good - but it’s very marginal.”
William Buick’s mount, Swindler, was withdrawn at the start, but having cantered to the start, he said: “It’s good ground - a bit easier than yesterday.”
Race Two - Group Two Hardwicke Stakes
Win Quotes
MACARTHUR MAKES IT FIVE FOR BALLYDOYLE
Ballydoyle’s extraordinary week continued as trainer Aidan O’Brien and jockey Johnny Murtagh teamed up for their fifth success of the Royal Meeting with Macarthur in the Group Two Hardwicke Stakes.
The four-year-old brother to 2005 Derby winner Motivator picked up strongly deep inside the final furlong to sweep past the gallant Multidimensional and secure a neck victory in the mile and a half contest.
O’Brien said: “You’re never sure until they pass the line but Johnny gave him a great ride and he responded well.
“He’s a horse that likes a strong even pace. The pace was even but it wasn’t strong and he did very well to quicken up.
“We might give him a rest now.”
Murtagh, who stretched his lead to two over nearest challenger Steve Drowne in the race to be leading jockey at the Meeting, received plenty of post race plaudits for his judgement and strength in the finish.
The rider said: “I had a lovely run through the race. They weren’t going that fast and when I came up alongside Ted at the top of the straight, Ted really quickened and his horse went on. I hoped we’d get there and then in the last 100 yards he really kicked into another gear.
“I think he’s going to be a Group One horse.”
With five wins including four Group Ones this week, Murtagh spoke of his delight.
He continued: “You have to pinch yourself to say this is really happening. As you can see from my reaction this week, I’m really enjoying my job and I’m working with brilliant people.”
Michael Tabor, who owns Macarthur in partnership with Sue Magnier and Derrick Smith, commented: “He’s a very good horse and it was a great ride by Johnny. He had a great position and I think that won us the race.”
“This week means everything - to Coolmore, to Ballydoyle - because this is what the whole operation strives for. To achieve this sort of standard, that’s what we hope for.”
Paddy Power introduced Macarthur into the betting at 20/1 for the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes over the course and distance on July 26.
Race 2: The Hardwicke Stakes
Placed Quotes
MULTIDIMENSIONAL SO CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR
Jockey Ted Durcan could hardly believe that he came so close to winning the Hardwicke Stakes on Multidimensional, his mount finishing just a neck behind Macarthur from the all-conquering Aidan O’Brien stable. “He did everything right, we just got collared on the line,” said the disappointed jockey.
Trainer Henry Cecil was full of praise for the five-year-old who, he felt, had run as well as he ever has. “He just didn’t quite get the mile and a half. This is a stiff mile and a half and if it had been an easy mile and a half, he would have got it. That said, he was beaten by a very good horse,” said the trainer, who has now had three second places at this year’s Royal Ascot.
Alan Cooper, racing manager to the Niarchos family considered that the horse’s performances had, “borne out Henry’s long-held faith in the horse.”
Cecil has no plans mapped out for the horse. “I don’t know what we’ll do with him now. I’ll go home and scratch my head,” he admitted.
Maraahel was chasing his third successive victory in the race, but was unable ever get on terms with the leading pair, finishing five lengths behind Multidimensional. “We’ve no excuses, he ran a solid old race, and found two too good on the day,” said Angus Gold, racing manager to Hamdam Al Maktoum.
“He’s never been a top horse, he’s just four to five pounds below the best. But he’s won over a million pounds in prize money and so it’s amazing he’s achieved what he has. I’ve said for the last three years that it would be his final season, so I won’t say anything this time and will just try and avoid the best and win another race or two. He owes us nothing and we’ll do what’s right for him,” added Gold.
MASSIVE CROWD TODAY
Charles Barnett, Ascot Racecourse’s Chief Executive, commented: “To break the 70,000 mark for today’s crowd is tremendous news and it is remarkable how popular the final day of Royal Ascot has become.
“Needless to say, this is a record final day crowd (previous record 62,056 in 2006), which is remarkable as the fifth day only came into play in 2002.”

Winner’s Quotes
KINGSGATE THRILLS BEST
Just four days after the he had finished 10th in the King’s Stand Stakes, Kingsgate Native ran the race of his life in the Group One Jubilee Stakes to bring Maidstone handler John Best his second success at this year’s Royal Ascot, a victory the trainer celebrated wildly:
“I do get very excited when I have winners - it means so much - and to have winners here is the ultimate,” he said.
Best, whose Flashmans Papers won the Windsor Castle Stakes on Tuesday at 100/1, completed a 3,433/1 double with Kingsgate Native’s 33/1 success. “I thought that the 33/1 and 40/1 that were available were crazy prices about Kingsgate Native for what he had done last year,” said the trainer.
Kingsgate Native had enjoyed considerable success as a two-year-old, including winning the Group One Nunthorpe Stakes at York, and the trainer admitted that he had plenty to live up to. “The weights were very much in his favour as a two-year-old and we didn’t know if the form would translate as a three-year-old,” he said.
Tuesday’s King Stand run was the horse’s first outing of the season and the trainer felt that the horse had run “with the choke out.”
“Immediately after the race I said to the owners John Mayne and the Thompsons [David and Patricia, owners of the Cheveley Park Stud] that I didn’t think we should rule out the Golden Jubilee. I didn’t think we had anything to lose. He has done a good job to come back so quickly. He has been sat on once since Tuesday when cantering yesterday - apart from that he has been out in the field all the time, ” the trainer said.
Two days before the race, the trainer booked jockey Seb Sanders to replace Jimmy Quinn who had ridden the horse in its last three outings. “I think we needed to try something different,” said Best. “I feel sorry for Jimmy Quinn - he has done a lot of work on the horse. Hopefully, he will have a chance to get back on, if not on this one on some of my others. He could go to stud at the end of the year - a decision will have to be made to keep him in training after then. He should make a good stallion.”
Sanders was very complimentary about his mount. “The horse was very professional, when I asked him the question he responded very well. They were tough horses that he was up against and this is a proper tough horse too. Once he had got his head in front there was only going to be one result. He is a very good sprinter.” said the jockey.
The trainer now sees the July Cup at Newmarket as the obvious next target. “The six furlongs at Newmarket is three seconds slower than at Ascot, so he shouldn’t have any trouble with that.” The Nunthorpe is also in the trainer’s plans.
THIRD RACE PLACED QUOTES
GOLDEN JUBILEE STAKES (GROUP 1)
WAR DELIGHTS EUSTACE
The globetrotting War Artist found just Kingsgate Native too good when runner-up in a great renewal of the Golden Jubilee Stakes.
“I was pleased that Takeover Target was drawn near us because he’s always thereabouts and Kerrin tracked the right horse. It really paid off,” said War Artist’s trainer James Eustace.
“We can go on to the July Cup and then might have a crack at the Global Sprint Challenge. He’s the right sort of horse to travel, he’s a five-year-old gelding that takes everything in his stride. His connections are fairly international as well.
“I’m glad that he ran his race and I didn’t mess up but it’s tough being runner-up for a second time with him.”
Trainer James Fanshawe was delighted with the third-place finish of Sir Gerry. “He’d been working very well and this was his ideal trip. He was really closing in on them going home and mentally he’s getting better. He’s improving.
“There’s a good chance that he’ll go for the July Cup but he has never run very well at Newmarket - it was rock hard in his second race there and then he didn’t do that well in the Middle Park.”
Australian raider Takeover Target finished in the first four on his sixth consecutive start at Royal Ascot when one place behind Sir Gerry.
“The ground was very firm the other day and that might just have jarred him up slightly,” said Takeover Target’s trainer Joe Janiak. “He was right up there but just didn’t go on when the pressure was put on.
“He has a heart of gold and we’ll see what the problem is and hope he can run in the July Cup.”
Takeover Target’s jockey Jay Ford added: “He ran well but was in a bit of a bad mood today, he had a bit of a bee in his bonnet and never showed his cutting dash. I wouldn’t be surprised if something comes out of it after the race even though he was a creditable fourth.”
Race Three - Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes
Quotes
DROWNE AT A LOSS OVER SAKHEE’S SECRET
Sakhee’s Secret was sent off the 5/1 third choice in the betting for the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes but was never a factor as he trailed home last of the 20 runners in the six-furlong showpiece.
Last season’s July Cup winner was bumped and barged mid-race but Drowne was not offering that as an excuse.
He said: “He lost a front shoe but I was first beaten. The ground’s not loose enough to say he would run that badly.
“It just wasn’t his running.”
Trainer Hughie Morrison said: “He was never going on the ground and we will take him home and hope to find something, he was beaten to early for that to be his running.
“The only time he has run badly before today was on fast ground that had been softened by rain like this.”
Davy Bonilla partnered French raider Marchand D’Or to finish sixth for trainer Freddie Head.
He said: “Today he was a little bit nervous and keen. He doesn’t like to be in the middle of horses like he was there and when I asked him to go he was empty.
“The pace was slow with people looking out for who was going to go on and it wasn’t clear for me at the start.
“It wasn’t the race I imagined in my head beforehand.”
FOURTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
WOKINGHAM HANDICAP
BIG TIMER TAKES WOKINGHAM TO SCOTLAND
There was a rare Scottish-trained Royal Ascot winner when Linda Perratt sent 20/1 chance Big Timer down from her Carluke stable to land the Wokingham Handicap by half a length from Beaver Patrol. It was a first victory at the Royal Meeting for jockey Tom Eaves.
The winner is owned by Gordon McDowall, who is also proprietor at Perratt’s yard. “It’s fantastic because it’s my first runner at Royal Ascot. I own the stable and Linda works very closely there with Ian Semple, who is head lad,” said McDowall.
“Because he’s by Street Cry we took him out to Belmont (in New York) but the ground there was bottomless so it was a wasted journey. We knew he’d win another one eventually and this is not a bad one to win!”
Eaves added: “He was a good two-year-old and a very impressive winner of the Acomb Stakes at York but a lot of people wrote him off in his three-year-old days. He just lost his way a bit.
“He had a few good runs in Dubai through the winter and was due a big one - thank God it’s today. It’s my biggest win and it hasn’t really sunk in yet.
“I wanted to stick to the far rail but he was hanging a bit. I was happy enough with his draw, I was just hoping we got some pace. It worked in our favour that there was a bit of ease in the ground and I was pretty sure I had won the race, but not over confident.”
Race Four - Wokingham Handicap
Place Quotes
BEAVER PATROL DELIGHTS JOHNSON HOUGHTON
Eve Johnson Houghton was delighted with the effort of Beaver Patrol in finishing a half-length runner-up to Big Timer in the day’s big betting heat, the 27-runner Wokingham Handicap.
Beaver Patrol “won” the race on the stands’ side under Mick Kinane from his draw in stall two but, separated by the width of the track, the six-year-old was unable to overhaul the winner.
Johnson Houghton said of the 16/1 shot: “I thought we were drawn on the right side but it turns out we weren’t. We won the race on our side.
“The horse is an absolute legend. He’s taken us everywhere, he’s won in Ireland and he’s run in Dubai. He was fifth in last year’s Stewards’ Cup and now he’s taken second in a Wokingham.
“We might go to the Stewards’ Cup again. There’s the temptation to maybe try and nick a little Listed race somewhere but he’s not quite up to Group Three class. What he is is a very good handicapper.”
The William Haggas-trained King’s Apostle (11/1), racing on the far side, chased home Big Timer to finish half a length and a nose behind the winner, under Liam Jones.
“I thought he couldn’t win from there and so did everyone else. We’re very happy. It’s been a great week,” said Haggas, who has already saddled two winners.”
Knot In Wood (10/1), racing on the stands’ side, took fourth for trainer Richard Fahey and jockey Paul Hanagan.
Arthur Rhodes, who owns the horse with his brother John, said: “The little bit of rain helped, he wouldn’t want it too firm. A bit more juice and it might have been a different result. He’s hardly blowing.
“The plan now for the horse is to go for the Scottish Stewards’ Cup but he’ll have a nice break first.”
FORD AND SWEENEY SUSPENDED
Australian jockey Jay Ford was called before the stewards following his ride of Takeover Target in the Golden Jubilee Stakes.
After interviewing the rider and viewing video evidence, the stewards decided that Ford was guilty of improper riding under Instruction H9 of the Rules of Racing, in that he used the whip without giving his horse time to respond. Ford was suspended for one day, Sunday, July 6th.
The stewards also enquired into possible interference in the same race at around two and a half furlongs out. The horses involved were Aeroplane, ridden by Alan Munro, Astronomer Royal, ridden by Colm O’Donoghue, Marchand D’Or, ridden by Davy Bonilla, and Sahee’s Secret, ridden by Steve Drowne. The stewards deemed that there was interference, but it was accidental and therefore took no further action.
In the Chesham Stakes, the stewards held an enquiry - under Rule 153(iii) - into possible interference inside the final two furlongs. They found that third-placed Markyg, ridden by Fergus Sweeney, had interfered with the unplaced Dr Smart, ridden by Royston French. They considered that the offence was caused by careless riding and Sweeney was suspended for a day, Sunday, July 6th.
Race Five - Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap
Win Quotes
MOORE FLOORS RIVALS ABOARD SUGAR RAY
Ryan Moore boxed clever aboard the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Sugar Ray in the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap, with a perfectly judged front-running ride that clinched victory in the mile and half contest.
The jockey, who prior to Thursday had never ridden a Royal Ascot winner, took his tally for the Meeting to three as he made all and then galvanised his game mount to hold the challenge of runner-up Mad Rush by a neck.
Owner Philip Newton, whose filly Hi Calypso could manage only ninth in the Hardwicke Stakes earlier in the afternoon, was delighted with the outcome.
He said: “That was fantastic. He’s our third runner this week and we’re very lucky to have three good enough to come here. To get a winner is unbelievable.
“The other two didn’t run so well but we’ve gone from zero to hero in a mile and a half.
“Ryan is a very good jockey but the horse tried very hard for him today.
“You don’t run horses from Sir Michael’s yard at that price without being optimistic but we are racehorse owners so we’ve got to be optimistic.”
Moore was thrilled with the victory and the redoubtable quality of the 8/1 shot.
He commented: “He tried real hard and was tough at the finish. He travelled well in front - I was saving a bit and he really pulled more out for me from the three pole.
“It’s good riding winners here.”
FIFTH RACE PLACED QUOTES
DUKE OF EDINBURGH HANDICAP
RUSH JUST BEATEN
The well-backed 5/2 favourite Mad Rush failed by a neck to catch the front-running Sugar Ray in the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap and the second’s trainer Luca Cumani fears life will get no easier for the four-year-old in future.
“He ran very well but the sad thing is that he is likely to go up in the weights yet he hasn’t won,” said Cumani.
“It will be harder next time but, we’ll just have to try and keep improving him. He’ll keep going for these good handicaps.”
Ed Dunlop, trainer of third-placed King Charles, said: “I’m very pleased, he came from well off the pace and this was his first go at a mile and a half. I hope that sooner rather than later his time will come to win one of these decent handicaps.”
Race 6: The Queen Alexandra Stakes
Winners Quotes
HONOLULU CAPS A
WONDERFUL WEEK FOR O’BRIEN
Aidan O’Brien proved that he can do no wrong this week at Royal Ascot, winning the final race of the last day, the Queen Alexandra Stakes, with Honolulu, to make it six Royal Ascot wins for the trainer and his jockey, Johnny Murtagh.
“It’s hard to believe it,” said Murtagh, winner of the London Clubs International Charity Clubs Trophy which goes to the leading jockey, “But coming here this week, I thought it could happen, I hoped it could happen and thankfully it did.”
O’Brien, as ever, played down his own role, insisting that the success of the Ballydoyle operation was a joint one. “Thanks to everybody involved, everyone at home, it was very much a team effort.”
Honolulu’s success came in a race that is the longest on the Flat calendar and one that the stable does not usually target. “I don’t think we’ve had a runner before,” said the trainer.
O’Brien was not absolutely certain that the classy four-year-old would last the distance, his longest trip previously had been when he placed third in the St Leger.
“We couldn’t be certain that he would stay, but he kept going didn’t he? But Johnny gave him a perfect ride, took his time and produced him perfectly,” said the trainer.
When asked which of his six winners stood out, O’Brien said: “They’re all very special, but it’s hard to get away from Yeats. One [Gold Cup] is amazing, two is incredible, three, you can’t even describe what it’s like”
SIXTH RACE PLACED QUOTES
QUEEN ALEXANDRA STAKES
HIGHCLERE’S WEEK FINISHES WITH DISTINCTION
Highclere Thoroughbred Racing and the Royal Ascot Racing Club, the two partnerships managed by Harry Herbert, ended an excellent week in the Queen Alexandra Stakes.
Distinction, owned by Highclere, and the Royal Ascot Racing Club’s Metaphoric respectively took second and third places in the marathon event, meaning that - out of eight runners - the partnerships had recorded two wins, two seconds and two thirds at this year’s Royal Meeting.
“It’s been a great week, although Distinction finished very tired after the race so they were just pouring buckets of water over him. He ran a blinder and was beaten by a proper improving staying horse in Honolulu,” said Herbert.
“Metaphoric also ran a great race, he got badly stopped on the bend but then ran on.”

WINNERS 2008
FACE OF ASCOT 2009 UNVEILED
Julie Falconer from San Francisco, USA, presented the winning trophies to connections of the Queen Alexandra Stakes, the concluding race of this year’s Royal Ascot, after being named the Face of Ascot 2009.
Falconer, who works for a technology startup company in London, has been in the UK for nine months and was attending Ascot for the first time on Tuesday when a scout took her picture for the Face of Ascot competition, run in conjunction with Models 1 and S Magazine (the Sunday Express colour supplement).
She said: “I came on Tuesday and a scout took my picture. I didn’t really think about it again until someone called me on Thursday to tell me I was one of the five finalists. I was shocked and completely surprised.
“I’ve never been any kind of model before, so when they announced that I had won I was stunned and flattered.”
Falconer, 26, saw off fellow glamourous racegoers Kathryn Allen, Shannon Gleeson, Katy Halseed and Megan Harris, with the judges describing her as “Vivacious and assured.”
She will now front Ascot’s marketing of the 2009 Royal Meeting and could be rewarded with a contract with leading agency, Models 1.
Falconer is no stranger to the racecourse and is an enthusiastic racegoer in her homeland.
She revealed: “I used to ride horses as a child - not racehorses - and I enjoy going to San Diego Fairgrounds at Del Mar, which is a beautiful racetrack.
“Ascot is something different and it’s wonderful to be a part of this. I’m very excited and thrilled by the prospect of being the Face of Ascot.”

GOING NEWS AT 9AM
Chris Stickels, Ascot’s Clerk of the Course, reported at 9am: “It started raining at about 4.30am and we have had four millimetres now.
“The rain has not really got into the ground yet so I have left the going description the same for the moment, Firm, good to firm in places, but if the rain continues it will start getting in.
“This rain will help. The rain is due to clear away and it should be a nice afternoon.
“The track has been riding very fair. There were some suggestions in the early part of the week that the stands’ side was favoured - I just think that was where the pace of the races was. It certainly doesn’t walk as if there is any bias.”
GOING CHANGE
The going was changed just before 1pm to
GOOD TO FIRM, FIRM IN PLACES
This follows 4.4 millimetres of rain up to 11.30am.
The GoingStick reading is 11.7 on the Straight Course, 8.9 on the Round Course and 10.0 Overall.

BETTING NEWS
Bookmakers report a quieter morning in the offices than earlier in the week although many punters are hoping that Macarthur can bring Aidan O’Brien a fifth success of the week in the Hardwicke Stakes (3.05pm).
Cork-based Cashmans have seen very strong support for the four-year-old and spokesman Joseph Burke said: “We’ve laid a string of big bets on Macarthur and have had to cut him from 15/8 all the way down to 5/4. Outside of Cuis Ghare on Friday, he would be the best-backed horse all week.”

FOUR DOWN AND ONE TO GO AS ROYAL ASCOT 2008 ENTERS ITS FINAL DAY
Four fascinating days at Royal Ascot have seen wonderful racing and the usual sartorial distractions but, with one day of the Meeting remaining, the achievements of Aidan O’Brien and Johnny Murtagh will be hard to eclipse.
O’Brien and his number one rider stormed the first three days, capturing the feature races on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
The Ballydoyle team was quick off the mark, taking the Meeting’s opening race, the Queen Anne Stakes, with the former Australian champion Haradasun, who won a thriller by a head from Darjina.
That was a mere aperitif however, as the real star performance of the day came two races later in the St James’s Palace Stakes. Henrythenavigator elicited a stream of superlatives from trainer and jockey following a brilliant victory in the mile contest for three-year-old colts, as he became the first horse since O’Brien’s Rock Of Gibraltar (2002) to add the St James’s Palace Stakes to successes in the English and Irish 2,000 Guineas.
O’Brien and Murtagh returned on Wednesday with the formidable Duke Of Marmalade, who benefited a massive public gamble when powering four lengths clear of a top-class field in the Group One Prince Of Wales’s Stakes over 10 furlongs.
The Ballydoyle piece de resistance came on Thursday when the great Yeats made history by becoming only the second horse to win the Gold Cup three times. He followed the legendary Sagaro into the record books with a resounding five length defeat of his old rival Geordieland.
Those victories place both O’Brien and Murtagh in the vanguard of the race to be the Meeting’s leading trainer and jockey respectively.
Tuesday also saw a rare Spanish-trained Royal Ascot winner as Mauricio Delcher Sanchez saddled Equiano to triumph in the Group One King’s Stand Stakes over five furlongs.
Art Connoisser was a breathtaking winner of the Group Two Coventry Stakes for two-year-olds, jumps trainer Suzy Smith saddled a memorable first Flat winner as Missoula took the marathon Ascot Stakes and the John Best-trained Flashmans Papers caused a 100/1 shock in the Windsor Castle Stakes under Steve Drowne.
Aqlaam was a most impressive winner of the Group Three Jersey Stakes on Wednesday for trainer William Haggas, while the French were not to be outdone with the Alain de Royer Dupre-trained Sabana Perdida taking the Group Two Windsor Forest Stakes.
Mr Aviator, trained by Richard Hannon, was a 25/1 winner of the day’s big handicap, the 29-runner Royal Hunt Cup over the straight mile, while Langs Lash was the same price when annexing the Queen Mary Stakes to give trainer Mick Quinlan a first Royal Ascot success.
Jockey Kerrin McEvoy was another enjoying a first Royal Ascot triumph as he took Wednesday’s concluding Sandringham Handicap aboard Festivale.
County Durham trainer Howard Johnson, a more familiar sight in the Cheltenham winner’s enclosure, landed a second victory in Thursday’s Norfolk Stakes with South Central. Michita put a poor Oaks run behind her when storming home in the Group Two Ribblesdale Stakes for trainer John Gosden, while Drowne partnered the Roger Charlton-trained Fifteen Love to win the ultra competitive Britannia Handicap.
Owners Highclere Thoroughbred Racing landed the last two races on Thursday with Collection (Hampton Court Stakes) and Colony (King George V Handicap).
Colony was a belated first Royal Ascot triumph for former champion jockey Ryan Moore, who soon doubled his tally aboard Patkai, the impressive winner of Friday’s Queen’s Vase over two miles.
Derby-winning trainer Jim Bolger was the man to follow on Friday. He took the opener, the six-furlong Albany Stakes, with his highly-regarded juvenile filly Cuis Ghare. The Irishman and stable jockey Kevin Manning teamed up for a double when another filly, Lush Lashes, captured the feature event, the Group One Coronation Stakes over a mile.
A Frankie Dettori win is always well-received at Ascot and the crowd finally saw the Sardinian’s famous flying dismount after Godolphin’s Campanologist took the King Edward VII Stakes.
Drowne closed in on Murtagh in the leading jockey stakes as he partnered a third winner of the week atop Supaseus in the Wolferton Handicap, while the final race on Friday saw more history made when Ahmed Ajtebi became the first Dubai-born rider to win at Royal Ascot. The delighted apprentice took the Buckingham Palace Handicap aboard the David Nicholls-trained Regal Parade.
