ROYAL ASCOT 2008
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
FOURTH DAY, FRIDAY, JUNE 20

NO WATERING TONIGHT

With rain arriving before the last race today, the ground will not be watered tonight ahead of the final day of Royal Ascot 2008. Further rain is forecast to arrive tonight.

Clerk of the Course Chris Stickels said: “We are forecast to receive four millimetres of rain tonight into tomorrow morning.

“John Kettley has told me we are on the edge of the weather band that is coming up from the south with the rain.

“If we were to water, there would be the danger of the ground becoming loose.”

The official going description remains firm, good to firm in places at the end of day four.

CROWD AT ROYAL ASCOT ON FRIDAY

Charles Barnett, Chief Executive of Ascot Racecourse, said: “Although slightly down on last year, it's pleasing to get past 60,000 for the Friday this year given the obvious increasing appeal of Saturday.

“Last year's Saturday crowd was 56,188 and our pre-sales tomorrow indicate that we will break 70,000 for the first time ever.”

SIXTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
BUCKINGHAM PALACE HANDICAP

DREAM FIRST ASCOT RIDE FOR AJTEBI

Dubai-born rider Ahmed Ajtebi had a victory with his first ride at Royal Ascot when partnering Regal Parade to take the concluding Buckingham Palace Handicap for trainer David Nicholls.

“It’s my first ride here and it has not been a hard job,” said 26-year-old Ajtebi, who was leading apprentice in Dubi last season.

“The trainer has gone to France and rang me before the race and told me just to see how things go and the horse hasn’t given me a hard job. I didn’t put my goggles down because of the rain.

“This is my 51st winner overall and any race I win here is different from anywhere else, let alone at Royal Ascot. Even if I didn’t win at Ascot it is a privilege to ride here against the top jockeys from France, Ireland and England.”

SIXTH RACE - BUCKINGHAM PALACE HANDICAP
PLACE QUOTES

SCOTTISH RAIDER GOES CLOSE

Dhaular Dhar got to within half a length of securing a first Royal Ascot victory for Glasgow trainer Jim Goldie in the Buckingham Palace Stakes, but was unable to overhaul the triumphant Regal Parade.

With Goldie otherwise engaged at Musselburgh, it was left to his son and assistant Jim Goldie jnr to unsaddle the game six-year-old, who flashed home first in the far side group from his 28 draw.

Goldie said: “He has run a blinder and I thought he had won. That was probably his best ever performance.”

The Indian Ridge horse, sent off at 25/1 under Daniel Tudhope for the seven-furlong contest, was a close fourth in the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket last year prior to a good run over the course and distance in September.

Goldie continued: “He ran a good race in the Bunbury Cup and then came here and was fifth in the totesport.com Challenge Cup. He seems to like the course and we wanted to run him in the Wokingham tomorrow but he missed the cut.

“We may have a look to see if there’s something at Chester for him as he likes it there - that’s if he’s not too high in the handicap now.

“The Bunbury Cup could also be on the agenda again and I suppose we have the option of looking at Listed races too.”

Race 5 - Queen’s Vase - Winning Quotes

PATKAI A COMFORTABLE WINNER OF THE QUEEN’S VASE

Patkai turned the two-mile Queen’s Vase into a procession with an impressive seven-length success for owners Ballymacoll Stud, trainer Sir Michael Stoute and jockey Ryan Moore, who was riding his second Royal Ascot winner.

The winner took up the running inside the final quarter mile and stayed on resolutely to reward favourite backers at 6/4.

Sir Michael Stoute commented: “I was very impressed.

“He is a progressive horse and is growing up mentally.

“I don’t think he really needs this distance, but as we had Conduit in the King Edward VII Stakes we thought we would go for this race.

“He wasn’t unlucky at Chester, he made his own bad luck really. I took him there because he was a big baby and I thought Chester would sharpen him up a bit.

“When he runs, he just lobs along really, he does nothing until Ryan asks him to.

“As I say, we could easily go back in distance with him, especially as he is by Indian Ridge and out of a full-sister to Islington, who although she won the Yorkshire Oaks twice was really better at a mile and a quarter. He is so relaxed and just saves his petrol.

“This horse is an impressive fellow and on the up.”

When asked about the Ladbrokes St Leger, one of the few major races to elude Stoute and for which he trains the first three in the betting this year (7/2 Tartan Bearer, 4/1 Patkai and 7/1 Conduit), his response was: “Sorry, what is the race called?!”

FIFTH RACE PLACED QUOTES
QUEEN’S VASE (GROUP 3)

AMERIGO IS POSSIBLE FOR DONCASTER CUP

Trainer Michael Jarvis is considering a tilt at the Doncaster Cup in September with Amerigo after the Daylami colt finished second to the seven-length Queen’s Vase winner Patkai.

“It was a good run and hopefully this time next year he will be a proper Cup horse,” said Jarvis. “He won’t be over raced this season but I always think the Doncaster Cup is a good race for three-year-olds because they get a good weight allowance at that time of the season.”

The William Jarvis-trained Gravitation belied her 33/1 odds to finish third. “She’s a beautifully-bred filly who stays very well,” said Jarvis. “I’m thrilled with that and the obvious race to think about is the Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster. She will be a lovely filly next year.”

FOURTH RACE - LISTED WOLFERTON HANDICAP
WIN QUOTES

SUPASEUS SURPRISES MORRISON

Hughie Morrison admitted that he had not fancied the chances of 12/1 shot Supaseus prior to his charge making all for a redoubtable victory in the Listed Wolferton Handicap.

The five-year-old, fourth in last year’s Royal Hunt Cup over a mile, was having only his second start over 10 furlongs but clearly relished the test as he hung on to deny Many Volumes by a length.

Morrison said: “I didn’t think that he’d be good enough, which is unfair really because on his day he’s a good horse.

“I thought it was an incredibly tough race. He only just got in and I thought he needed a flat track. You think, 16 runners 15 to beat - then five come out and you think, well we might get into the money.

“Steve (Drowne, jockey) rode a great race and when he kicked on three out, I thought he’d take some beating.

“He’s a tough, bulky horse and looked like he would stay. He’s still in the John Smith’s Cup at York.”

Drowne moved to within one of Johnny Murtagh in the race to be London Clubs International Charities leading rider at Royal Ascot, as he landed his third success of the meeting.

He said: “Three of the strong pace setters came out so it was then always the plan to make it. When he led three out I knew he’d be hard to pass.

“I have a strong chance with Sakhee’s Secret in the Golden Jubilee Stakes tomorrow but I’m sure Johnny has some very good chances too and he probably deserves to be a 1/2 shot.”

The trainer also talked about Sakhee’s Secret: “It’s nice to get Sakhee’s Secret back into a Group One race. We know he doesn’t go as well on rain softened or loosened ground so I’m keeping a very close eye on the weather. So far, so good but it’s looking a bit dark out there at the moment. Some nice rain tonight and let it drain during the morning would be great but we wouldn’t want it to rain right through the day’s racing.

"We’ll monitor it during the day. We might even walk it a couple of races before and just see how it’s riding. It’s a totally different surface here to what any other racecourse is, so he might not even handle it anyway.

"It’s a fantastic race. I think Marchand d’Or has an outstanding chance if it rains. I thought that was a very impressive win (Chantilly). Regardless of the King’s Stand race, he’d be the one I would be backing if I wasn’t backing Sakhee’s Secret."

Race 4 - Wolferton Handicap - Placed Quotes

CECIL AND SWINBURN HAPPY

Trainers Henry Cecil and Walter Swinburn were both satisfied with the performances of Many Volumes and Pinpoint after the pair finished second and third respectively in the Listed Wolverton Handicap over 10 furlongs.

Cecil said of the length runner-up Many Volumes: “He ran very well, as he was trying to give 8lb to the winner

“I thought he might get there at one point and to go down by a length when trying to give 8lb isn’t bad,”

Pinpoint was a short-head further back in third and Walter Swinburn said: “I am really pleased.

“Today showed his run at Great Leighs last time was all wrong and the horses have been in great form this week.

“I thought we were going to win at one point and I had to start shouting!

“I have no arguments with the result today and we are back on track.

“We will see what the handicapper does before we decide on his next target. He got the 10-furlong trip well today.”

THIRD RACE WINNING QUOTES
CORONATION STAKES (GROUP 1)

LASHES COMPLETES GREAT DOUBLE FOR BOLGER
Lush Lashes continued a memorable day for trainer Jim Bolger when gaining her first Group 1 victory when taking the Coronation Stakes by three and a quarter lengths under Kevin Manning.

The Galileo filly had finished fifth in the Juddmonte Oaks last time out but was not inconvenienced by the step back in trip to a mile.

"I’d be very impressed with her,” said Bolger. “I was hoping that she would give a good account of herself but I didn’t think she could win in that style. My only concern was the lack of pace in the race today but Kevin had that covered. We knew after Epsom that she was going the right way and obviously I was very tempted to go for the Ribblesdale, but we thought that having won a Group race already we’d try to upgrade her and win a Group One and she’s done it in style. If the Ribblesdale was a Group One she would have probably gone for that. It all hinged on the status of the race.

"She had the Goffs Million won with a furlong to go and that’s only seven furlongs. She’s always shown plenty of pace and I was a little concerned about her getting a mile and a half at Epsom. As it happened, it was more the track than not getting the trip, so next time it probably will be a mile and a half.

"The Irish Oaks at the Curragh will be her target. We’ll always return to Ireland! She hadn’t done any fast work at home since before the Guineas and she seems to be getting hardier at this stage.”

Lush Lashes is quoted as 6/4 favourite for the Irish Oaks with Cashmans and completed a 9.36/1 double for Bolger following the victory of Cuis Ghaire in the opening Albany Stakes.

“I’m only had singles here before, they are scarce enough and won this (in 1983) with Flame Of Tara,” he added.

Manning added: "She got into a lovely even position and it was a nice even pace. She travelled very, very well and I was in a lovely position all of the way.

"She stays well and I just feel it was the track at Epsom that she didn’t handle. She was shifting on the ground as the camber rolled away. She looked a smart filly in the Musidora and she was not beaten far in the Guineas when she would have been inexperienced.

"It makes your job very easy when then have the speed that she has and they can stay. Any Group One winner, I enjoy and she’s come back and proved us right today.”

THIRD RACE - GROUP ONE CORONATION STAKES
PLACE QUOTES

GOSDEN PLEASED WITH INFALLIBLE EFFORT

Trainer John Gosden praised runner-up Infallible after the Cheveley Park Stud filly chased home Lush Lashes in the Group One Coronation Stakes.

The 1,000 Guineas fourth, ridden by Jimmy Fortune, threw down her challenge approaching the distance but was outstayed in the closing stages by the winner, who drew three and a quarter lengths clear at the line.

Gosden said: “She did nothing wrong and ran a blinder. I had a word with Mr Bolger and told him to give his filly a rest and then he turns up here and beats us.

“The other filly just had more stamina in the last half-furlong. We came to beat her and she outstayed us. We’ll look at races over a stiff seven furlongs or an easy mile.

“Take nothing away from Jim’s filly, but she likes this fast ground and ours just wants a bit of cut. She likes juice in the ground so we’re delighted she ran a good race.”

Dermot Weld, trainer of third-placed Carribean Sunset said: "I am delighted. She is lovely, tough, genuine filly and has been a model of consistency.

"She was unlucky in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and Pat (Smullen, Jockey), thought she was maybe a shade unlucky not to be second today.

"There is a possibility she could now go for the American Oaks, for which she has an invitation (run at Hollywood Park). It is a $1 million race and I have won it before (with Dimitrova in 2003). We could also look at the Falmouth Stakes.

"As the year progresses, I think she could be suited by 10 furlongs.

"Today’s race was a vintage Coronation Stakes I think."

Spacious, sent off the 9/4 favourite after finishing runner-up to Natagora in the 1,000 Guineas on her latest start, was unable to trouble the winner and kept on to take fourth under Jamie Spencer.

Trainer James Fanshawe commented: “If you look at the form, she ran a good race but Jamie (Spencer) just felt that she didn’t have her usual spark. We’ll see how she is before making any plans.”

Race 2 - King Edward VII Stakes - Winning Quotes

FRANKIE & GODOLPHIN OFF THE MARK FOR THE WEEK

Frankie Dettori enjoyed his first winner of Royal Ascot 2008 aboard the Godolphin colt Campanologist in the ‘Ascot Derby’ - the Group Two King Edward VII Stakes over a mile and a half.

The Kingmambo colt, a 9/1 chance, benefited from a fine tactical ride from Dettori. He led virtually from pillar to post and stayed on well to see off first the challenge of Top Lock, and then that of the fast-finishing runner-up Conduit.

Dettori, who was registering his 40th career success at the Royal Meeting, said: “I think I was on suicide watch as I hadn’t ridden a winner this week! The boys in the weighing room had to hide all knives and ropes from me! I’ve been getting so much stick from everybody, even Princess Anne yesterday gave me a bit of stick. It’s not a sprint it’s a mile and I’m glad I got one - I know it’s Friday.

"I had a good partner, with a lot of courage and we crossed the line first believe it or not! Obviously I wanted a good position and I didn’t really want a mile and a half test so I tried to slow it down, without slowing it down too much so I had enough petrol to get to the end. When I asked him to quicken, he quickened straightaway. When I heard the roar from the crowd, I knew something was coming but I had enough rope left to get to me to the line. It’s easy to do that with a good horse like him.

“The Irish Derby could come a bit quick for him as it is only the weekend after next, I think. Something like the Great Voltigeur at York could be the race for him. The options are open and I will leave all the decisions to Sheikh Mohammed, Saeed and Simon.”

Successful trainer Saeed bin Suroor, scoring a 29th Royal Ascot success, said: “I am very happy that the horse has won a Group Two race over a mile and a half.

“The horse had improved a lot since his last run at Lingfield and the step up in distance helped him today.

“Frankie was very happy after his last piece of work.

“We will keep all our options open. We will see how the horse comes out of the race before making any decisions.

“He is a strong, tough horse and I think there could be better to come from him next year.

“He is very honest and always tries hard.”

Looking ahead to the future, Godolphin’s racing manager Simon Crisford added: “The stamina question might make him doubtful for the St Leger.

“He could maybe go for the Great Voltigeur, but the St Leger is a totally different ball game at this stage.”

Sponsors Ladbrokes rate Campanologist at 14/1 for the final Classic of the season behind Conduit (7/1).

SECOND RACE PLACED QUOTES
KING EDWARD VII STAKES (GROUP 2)

CONDUIT JUSTIFIES SUPPLEMENTARY ENTRY

The 11/4 favourite Conduit failed by three-quarters of a length to catch the front-running Campanologist in the King Edward VII Stakes and rewarded connections’ decision to pay a £20,000 supplementary entry stage.

“He is progressing nicely and justified the supplementary entry fee,” said the runner-up’s trainer Sir Michael Stoute. “He’s had two runs in 13 days now so we’ll back off him and freshen him up.”

Conduit was cut from 14/1 to 7/1 for the Ladbrokes St Leger in September with the final Classic’s sponsor. “That’s a long way off, it’s only June now so we’ll have to see,” added Stoute.

Andrew Balding, trainer of third-placed Top Lock, said: “He’s improving all the time and getting wiser. We were looking at the German Derby a fortnight on Sunday and will have to consider it because it’s a valuable race but he has had a hard race today.

“Longer term we’ll think of the St Leger - he’ll probably fall short of that this year but he’ll be a hell of a horse next season.”

Fourth-placed All The Aces was quoted at 25/1 for the Ladbrokes St Leger with the sponsor and his trainer Michael Jarvis said: “I’m very pleased with that, he was getting back into the race and in another furlong he would have been placed.

“The Leger is the objective but he had a hard race today and will have a bit of a break now and maybe have a prep race in mid August.”

Bronze Cannon, the 100/30 second favourite, finished seventh and his trainer John Gosden said: “He kept on well but we were slightly in the wrong place but that’s just life. I have to say Frankie was at his best and simply beat them.”

Race 1 - Albany Stakes - Placed Quotes

PENNY’S COULD BE SUPER SPRINT BOUND

Richard Hannon Junior, assistant trainer to his father Richard, was delighted with the effort of Group Three Albany Stakes runner-up Penny’s Gift, who went down by a length and three quarters to Cuis Ghaire.

He said: “She ran a super race and is a nice filly who did not cost a lot of money. She was beaten by a good filly today.

“She is entered in a few of the sales races and the Weatherbys Super Sprint (Newbury, July 19). Although it would mean dropping back to five furlongs at Newbury, she only has a light weight and won’t be coming up against anything as good as the winner from this race.”

A further head back in third was the staying on Danidh Dubai under Chris Catlin.

Bruce Raymond, racing manager to owner Jaber Abdullah, said: “We were expecting a run like that as she had improved a bit since her last run and was working well.

“I think she could win over seven furlongs, although I don’t think she actually needs seven furlongs. So, we will still consider options over six furlongs for her.

“She coped with the ground very well.”

GROUND SIMILAR TO YESTERDAY

Most of the jockeys riding in the first race felt the ground was similar to yesterday.

Jimmy Fortune said “it’s pretty similar to yesterday” while Frankie Dettori, Johnny Murtagh and Ryan Moore both said “it’s still the same”.

Stephen Carson described it as “quick”, Darryll Holland said “it’s very fast”, Chris Catling said “it felt firm” while Fergus Sweeney said “it felt like the M4 on that filly but she wants some cut.”

£750,000 FOR SINGLE WINNER OF THE TOTESCOOP6 TOMORROW

It was another early exit for totescoop6 players last weekend with, for the second week running, all remaining tickets knocked out in leg four.

Despite the race being won by the co-favourite, Lady Grace, 12/1 and 14/1 winners in the previous legs proved too difficult to find.

It means that the win fund currently sits on £419,191 and, with a further £179,653 in the bonus, a single winner of both would pick up over £3/4 million

Races for tomorrow’s totescoop6 are divided between Royal Ascot, Ayr and Newmarket.

Paul Petrie, totepool spokesman, commented: “The bet has proved difficult to solve in recent weeks and, with a 28-runner race to finish, it won't be any easier this week.

“However, with well over £1/2 million in the win fund and a chance to go for another £250,000, the rewards make it well worth playing.”

BETTING NEWS

After a dream third day of Royal Ascot at which four favourites obliged, punters are hoping their good run will continue with Cuis Ghare in today’s opening Albany Stakes.

Tony Coleman, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: “Paddy is reeling from one of his worst days yesterday and has earmarked four bogie horses today in Cuis Ghare, Bronze Cannon, Spacious and Zaahid. We need those four beating badly.”

Cuis Ghare is Evens from 5/4 with Paddy Power, Skybet and Boylesports, 10/11 from 11/10 with VCBet, 6/5 from 11/8 with William Hill, 11/10 from 5/4 with Coral and 11/10 from 11/8 with Stan James. “She was the one the dogs were barking about as soon as our phone lines opened this morning,” said Coral’s David Stevens, whose firm tightened her to 11/10 from 5/4.

GROUND

After walking the course this morning, Ascot’s clerk of the course Chris Stickels changed the official going to

FIRM, GOOD TO FIRM IN PLACES

“We put down eight millimetres of water last night but with a drying wind it is Firm on the Straight Course although a bit better around Swinley Bottom,” said Stickels.

“There is light rain forecast this afternoon and heavier showers tonight, possibly three to four millimetres, but we have been forecast rain all week and only had one millimetre.”

The false rail from Swinley Bottom to the intersection with the Straight Course was moved overnight to provide fresh ground for today and Saturday.

ETHERINGTON LOOKS TO THE SKIES AHEAD OF WOKINGHAM BID

Tim Etherington enjoyed one of the biggest moments of his career when Fullandby landed the Portland Handicap at Doncaster in September and the North Yorkshire trainer is hoping that his stable star can provide a first Royal Ascot success in Saturday’s £100,000 Wokingham Handicap (4.25pm).

The six-year-old, who will be partnered by 3lb claimer P J McDonald, has been in fine form this spring, with placed efforts in competitive handicaps at Newmarket and Newbury preceding a decent run in the Group Two Temple Stakes at Haydock on May 24.

Racing on good to firm going, Fullandby came home just over eight lengths behind the record breaking Fleeting Spririt, who franked the form when taking third in the Group One King’s Stand Stakes here on Tuesday.

Etherington said: “I’m very happy with Fullandby’s preparations. He’s been working well and is in really good order. He ran a blinder to win the Portland last year and I’m hoping for the same again.

“He ran well enough at Haydock but the ground was a bit quicker than ideal. We don’t want it too firm so we’re praying for some rain. He really needs some because he’s not at his best on really fast ground. He can go on it but he’s not as comfortable on those conditions so I’m hoping for nice good ground.

“I’m happy with his draw. My opinion is that 15 is fine because we have the option to go either side. It’s much better than being in one or 28 as we at least have a choice as to which side to go.”

The six-furlong handicap is one of the biggest betting heats of the Flat season and will see 28 runners go to post.

Last year’s runner-up Intrepid Jack is the current market leader and is widely available at 9/1 to go one better for trainer Hughie Morrison, who took this prize in 2006 with Baltic King.

Ralph Beckett, still enjoying the afterglow of Oaks success, looks to the well-regarded Lipocco who was considered for the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes after taking second in a Windsor Listed contest on his seasonal bow. The Barry Hills-trained Prime Defender was third on that occasion.

Aidan O’Brien and Johnny Murtagh team up in search of more glory with Abraham Lincoln, who was just over four lengths ninth to Equiano in Tuesday’s Group One King’s Stand Stakes.

County Durham trainer Howard Johnson seeks his second victory of the week with recent York winner Tombi, while Richard Fahey has Sunrise Safari and the well-fancied bottom-weight Knot In Wood. Stable jockey Paul Hanagan has opted to ride the last-named.

Richard Hannon is seeking his third Wokingham (1990 Knight Of Mercy, 1994 Venture Capitalist) and relies on top-weight Edge Closer, winner of the Listed Cathedral Stakes at Salisbury five days ago, and Vitznau.

It is 25 years since David Elsworth tasted Wokingham glory with Melindra and he looks to Nota Bene, who defeated the Kevin Ryan-trained Tamagin at Great Leighs on his only outing this season.

Lafi landed a gamble for trainer Dandy Nicholls in 2004 and the North Yorkshire sprint king saddles Indian Trail, Northern Fling, Something and Machinist

William Haggas has his string in fine form and looks to King’s Apostle and Conquest, while Temple Stakes sixth Off The Record represents trainer James Given.

The field is completed by New Freedom, Capricorn Run, Bentong, Viking Spirit, Biniou, Big Timer, Beaver Patrol, Dark Islander and Orpsie Boy.

ROYAL ASCOT’S FIRST RESERVES

Thursday’s Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot saw the first ever day of the race reserve take its place in a race on a British racecourse when the David Elsworth-trained Lazy Days stepped into the breach and duly clinched fifth-place prize money.

The British Horseracing Authority introduced same day reserves earlier this year after the idea was proposed by the Horsemen's Group, with a trio of races being selected for the trial at the Royal Meeting (Britannia Handicap, Buckingham Palace Handicap and Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap).

The three Royal Ascot races were chosen by the racing authorities as they are not as sensitive to ante-post betting as the Royal Hunt Cup and the Wokingham Handicap.

The system increases running opportunities for owners and simultaneously helps the betting market by maximising field sizes. The introduction of reserves provides a second chance to owners whose horses just missed the cut-off and prevents races with good levels of prize money going off without full fields.

Three named reserves are available to replace non-runners up to 8.30am on the morning of the race.

This afternoon’s renewal of the £60,000 Buckingham Place Handicap sees all three reserves take their places in the 29-runner field.

The Roger Ingram-trained Buxton was added to the field yesterday evening following the withdrawal of Express Wish, while the early morning defections of Smart Enough and Atlantic Story have allowed both the John Best-trained Meydan Dubai and the John Hills-trained Bomber Command a shot at Royal Ascot glory.

Buxton will carry number 30 and takes the 20 draw originally allotted to Express Wish. Meydan Dubai will carry 31 on his number cloth and jumps from stall 21, while Bomber Command, number 32, replaces Smart Enough in stall 11.

Michael Harris, chief executive of the Racehorse Owners Association, said: “This shows the value of the constituent parts in the Horsemen’s Group working together. This was an initiative by the group which was embraced by Ascot Racecourse.

"This system of reserves offers more running opportunities for owners, and helps the betting market by maximising field sizes wherever we can. The idea is to stop owners whose horses just missed the cut-off seeing races with good levels of prize-money going off without full fields."

Rupert Arnold, chief executive of the National Trainers' Federation, said: "Racing has become increasingly flexible in dealing with changing circumstances and the new reserve system will be welcomed by trainers as a sensible approach to filling slots left by non-runners in target races.”

He was twice champion apprentice in Ireland in 1984 and 1987, when he beat Kieren Fallon and succeeded Christy Roche as Bolger’s number one jockey in 1993.
