ROYAL ASCOT 2008
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
THIRD DAY, THURSDAY, JUNE 19

CROWD

Today’s attendance at Royal Ascot was 73,130, compared to 74,228 on the same day last year.

Charles Barnett, Ascot’s Chief Executive, said: “We’re delighted to have our usual 70,000-plus crowd for what is traditionally the most popular day of the Royal Meeting.

“We’re looking forward to Friday when it looks as if the crowd will be circa 60,000. After tremendous pre-sales all through the week for Saturday, it looks like we will definitely get over the 70,000 mark for the first time.”

COURSE WILL BE WATERED TONIGHT

The going remains GOOD TO FIRM, FIRM IN PLACES after the third day of Royal Ascot.

“We will be watering the course all the way round tonight, putting down eight millimetres of water,” said Ascot’s Clerk of the Course, Chris Stickels.

“We are forecast a dry night this evening with the possibility of showers tomorrow.

“We will be removing the false rail from Swinley Bottom to the intersection with the Straight Course to provide fresh ground for Friday and Saturday.”

TWO-DAY BAN FOR WINSTON

Jockey Robert Winston picked up a two-day ban following his winning ride on South Central in the opening Norfolk Stakes.

The stewards held that Winston had used his whip in an incorrect place.

The two days for his suspension are Thursday, July 3 and Friday, July 4.

EGAN BANNED

John Egan picked up a two-day ban following his ride on fourth-placed Dubai Dynamo in the fourth race, the Britannia Handicap.

The stewards held that Egan had used his whip with excessive frequency.

His ban will take effect on Thursday, July 3 and Friday, July 4.

RACE SIX: MOORE QUOTES - KING GEORGE V STAKES (HERITAGE HANDICAP)

MOORE - IT’S GREAT

Ryan Moore wore a smile after finally laying his Royal Ascot bogey to rest by riding Colony to victory in the closing King George V Handicap.

Moore has had to suffer on several occasions this week with two seconds and one third already to his name.

But his staunch ally, trainer Sir Michael Stoute, supplied him with a cherished first triumph at the Royal meeting and he received a huge roar as he received a memento at the presentation to winning connections.

Moore said: “It is great to have ridden a winner here at last. I was disappointed not to ride a winner here yesterday but these things happen.”

Asked what he was thinking as he brought 11/2 favourite towards the line, Moore responded: “Nothing really - just to keep a clear head and try to ride a winner.

“They went steady and I was caught a little wide but the way he went and won it was no problem. My horse picked up really well.”

Race 6 - King George V Stakes - winning quotes

COLONY GIVES HIGHCLERE A DREAM DOUBLE

Colony carried the blue Highclere Thoroughbred Racing colours into the winner’s enclosure for a second time on Ladies’ Day when landed the King George V Handicap, giving Ryan Moore his first Royal Ascot success, 35 minutes after Collection landed the Listed Hampton Court Stakes.

Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, the son of Statue Of Liberty was held up towards the rear of the field before making his challenge to hit the front inside the final furlong and score by a length and three quarters.

Harry Herbert, racing manager for the owners, said afterwards: “To get into the unsaddling enclosure here at Royal Ascot is hard enough, but to suddenly go from four winners to six in one day is incredible.

“All credit to John Warren for all he does for us, buying the horses. Credit also to the trainers for placing the horses and Ralph Johnson, who works so closely with us doing all of our handicapping and advises us on all of the form.

“It’s a terrific team effort and I’m delighted for my owners. We’ve got over half of our owners here which is fantastic, that’s over 150 people. This is the centrepiece of British racing, it’s the place where every owner wants to come and seeing everyone’s faces is incredible.

“To give Ryan (Moore) his first Royal Ascot winner is particularly special. Ryan has ridden our horses for years, since he was with Richard Hannon and obviously with Sir Michael so it’s amazing to get that monkey off his back and to be part of that history.

“We’ve no plans at this stage. We’ll have to sit down with Sir Michael and talk about it. We wanted to see if he’d stay the mile and a half and he’s done that really well. We knew Newbury was all wrong - he hates that sticky ground. He’s proven today that he really goes on any ground other than that holding ground when he can’t seem to get his feet out.

“I thought it looked like they were going a very good pace, but Ryan said that they slowed the pace right down which helped him because he could get out and get a position - it was a tough draw from where he was coming from. Rather like Sandown first time up this year, when he sees daylight he gets on an even keel and he shows he’s a very useful horse.”

CUMANI AND GOSDEN PLEASED WITH PLACINGS

Meanwhile Luca Cumani, trainer of second-placed Savarain, said: “He has run very well, especially when you think he had the top weight. He showed that he is still improving and we will see how he takes this before finding his next race.”

John Gosden, trainer of third-placed Moonquake, said: “He has run a good race. He did nothing wrong and the winner was clearly the best horse on the day.”

FIFTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
HAMPTON COURT STAKES

COLLECTION DELIVERS FOR HAGGAS

Collection looked a colt with a big future after being delivered with a well-timed run under Kerrin McEvoy to take the Hampton Court Stakes in the colours of Highclere Thoroughbred Racing’s Brunel Syndicate

“He looks like a horse with a bit of a potential. I think he’s pretty useful,” said winning trainer William Haggas. “I don’t know how he managed to get beaten off a mark of 80 at Doncaster, it just shows how important the ground is to him. It was a very brave ride from Kerrin.

“He is in the John Smith’s Cup at York off 7st 10lb but even with his 5lb penalty I don’t think he’ll get in. But knowing Harry (Herbert, managing director of Highclere Thoroughbred Racing), we’ll be going onwards and upwards with him.

“I was delighted to see Harry’s face because this meeting means so much to him, it’s what it’s all about for him and he has been with me since Highclere’s inception in 1992.”

McEvoy said: “He’s not had many runs and at York last time we were probably lucky to win because he took a long time to settle. We were checked four times then but he was relaxed today and showed a good turn of foot to go through a tight gap. I was lucky that it opened up for me. He’s a horse that’s improving, that’s for sure.”

Harry Herbert added: "I will have a heart attack! It is so hard to get in the unsaddling enclosure here at Royal Ascot let alone to win.

"We have been so lucky over the years here - this is our fifth winner. You have got to have everything running for you, the right horse, the right ground and a fantastic group of owners.

"It is unbelievable. Wonderful William Haggas who is a fantastic trainer. He has been so patient with this horse. It would have been a ridiculous decision to go for the Derby and we have aimed the horse here and the plan has come off."

Race 5 - Hampton Court Stakes (Listed) - placed quote

SWINBURN GOT THE EVIDENCE HE WANTED

Trainer Walter Swinburn was delighted with Staying On’s brave second place finish in the Listed Hampton Court Stakes.

Under Adam Kirby, the son of Invincible Spirit was prominent throughout before being kicked for home three furlongs out. However, he couldn’t repel the fast-finishing Collection who hit the front with a furlong and a half to race before going on to score by a length and a half.

“Staying On has run a fantastic race. He’s a horse who is going the right way and I don’t think we’ve seen the best of him,” said the handler.

“Adam (Kirby) was delighted with him. Everything went right from the gate and we’ve no excuses. We’ve yet to decide where he’ll go next. We wanted the evidence that we belonged in this company and we got that today so we’ll go home and have a look. We’ll try for something similar.”

Race 3 - Gold Cup (Group One) - winning quotes

MORE YEATS QUOTES

Aidan O’Brien said: “It was marvellous and I didn’t believe it could happen. To win one Gold Cup was unbelievable, to win two was amazing and to win three, what can I say? Everybody at home was involved in getting the horse here year to year. There’s so many people that if I started mentioning names I would be here until tomorrow but he’s an amazing horse.

“He’s an unbelievable stayer. This is the horse that was unbeaten on his first four starts, was favourite for the Derby before he got injured on his third run as a three-year-old and didn’t run anymore that year. He came back first run as a four-year-old and came back and won the Coronation Cup. He’s a stayer with unbelievable class.

“It’s unbelievable that he was able to kick Regal Flush after the race and that tells you how mush ease he goes through his races with. Johnny said he wasn’t going to break his rhythm when he got there and that he was to keep going and going. They challenged him and there was loads there when he was being challenged.

“He’s just one of those unique horses with a massive heart, a massive pair of lungs, great rhythm and the great determination to win. He’s a unique horse. The people at home make it happen. They are directly involved with him, they work with him every day, and they deserve the credit.

“He’s a very unusual horse to be as sound as he is at that age. He won all of the big Derby trails in Ireland but pulled a muscle in his back and missed that season. To come back first run next season and win the Coronation Cup, makes you think what would he have done if he hadn’t got injured, but maybe it was lucky because we wouldn’t have had him for the staying races and he would have gone off to stud by now.

“The majority of flat horses are, in boxing terms, a middle/light weight but this fella is a heavyweight. As a horse, he thinks it and knows it and that’s very unusual.

“We’ll go home and talk to the owners and then we will decide what to do and all of the cup races are open to him. There is always a chance that he could come back here next year but I couldn’t say for definite until we go home and talk about it, but I know that when he goes, we won’t get another one.

“He has great presence and he has everything and that is why he has been around for so long. He’s a true horse and everything about him is solid and true.

“Johnny is a very special person. Everyone knows he is a very special jockey and he’s coming to that age in life when he’s starting to ride at the top of his game. I can’t tell you enough how much he has brought to the whole team - his ability, his loyalty and his attitude. He’s made a massive difference to us.”

RACE FOUR: WIN QUOTES - BRITANNIA STAKES (HERITAGE HANDICAP)

DROWNE IN WINNER’S CIRCLE AGAIN

Steve Drowne became only the second jockey to win two races or more at this year’s Royal Ascot when he drove out Fifteen Love to score in the Britannia Handicap from Masaalek.

Drowne, who still trails Johnny Murtagh by two, had won on the opening day on Flashmans Papers in the Windsor Castle Stakes.

The relatively unexposed son of Point Given had floundered in soft ground on his two previous starts, including the Horris Hill, but he relished the sound surface in coming from out the back to score at rewarding odds of 28/1.

Drowne said: “He has done well. The ground is the big key to this horse and it’s riding quick, which suits him.

“He didn’t break well and I’ve had to weave my way through. It’s my second winner at Ascot this week which is brilliant.”

Asked about the close finish with horses flashing home on both side of the track, Drowne added: “The camera was on me as we were pulling up and I thought I might have won it but you never like to tempt fate.”

Winning trainer Roger Charlton said: “The plan was to be just in behind the leaders but he missed the break and was last or second last. They always go so fast in these soprt of races at Ascot, that it can sometimes suit to come from off the pace.

“He was very disappointing at Newbury (on his first start of the year). He absolutely hated the soft ground at Newbury (on his first start this year) so we thought we’d wait until it was faster. The plan was always to wait for this. Sometimes plans work out, sometimes they don’t.”

“The handicapper will take a dim view and might stick him up. If he continues to progress we might try a Listed race and maybe one day the horse will do well in America.”

FOURTH RACE PLACED QUOTES
BRITANNIA STAKES

MASAALEK AND YADDREE HOLD UP NEWMARKET FORM

Yaddree and Masaalek, who finished first and second in a Newmarket handicap last month, upheld that form when taking the third and second place positions in the Britannia Handicap.

“Thank goodness they decided to stay on the far side and break into two groups. He could have just done with some cover and a bit of company, he was idling in front,” said Marcus Tregoning, trainer of Masaalek

“We were 4lb worse off and they have run the same race again to the pound,” said Yaddree’s trainer Michael Jarvis. “I wish they were all like him because he has never run a bad race. It was only his third run of the year so we have plenty of options with him.”

HUGHES BANNED
Richard Hughes received a two-day suspension for careless riding when partnering Icon Project in the Ribblesdale Stakes. The ban takes place on July 3 and 4.

Race 3 - Gold Cup (Group One) - winning quotes

O’BRIEN: “IT’S UNBELIEVABLE”

Yeats entered the record books when becoming the just the second horse to land a hat-trick of wins in the Group One Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. Under a confident Johnny Murtagh, the seven-year-old made his move with more than half a mile to run before stretching clear of first third placed Coastal Path and then shrugging off the challenge of Geordieland.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien said: “It’s unbelievable that he was able to come back and win another one. He’s an amazing horse. We made a decision last year that we’d only give him one run before it this year and I was very sure over the last year that I’d made the wrong decision because he was putting up weight hand over fist.

“He’s gone very lazy. He’s only doing what he needs to do. But Andrew and David (Hickey) are involved everyday and they were very happy that he was really well. All credit to them. Johnny and Seamie (Heffernan) rode him in his work and they were very happy. He wasn’t getting any lighter but is getting older and wiser.

“He travelled very strong through the race. In all fairness to Johnny, he said he was going to let him take his time and let his rhythm build up. When he felt he was building, he was going to let him go.

“All that was going through my mind was that he was heavy, but he didn’t look as heavy in the ring beforehand. When he started building turning in, he was between two of them I was happy enough. Into the straight he was lazy but I can’t see any horse who would be able to stay off the bridle with him. He’s a unique horse.

“I can’t put the win into words. When he came back and won one Gold Cup, I couldn’t believe it but them to come back and win another and another is hard to believe

“We always dreamed when we started off, that we would be able to get horses to compete in these races and that was always our dream. And when you get horses like we’ve been getting over the last couple of years is unbelievable. I’m just so lucky to be in a position that I’m in, working with so many special people with special horses.

“He’s moving great and has never pulled out like an old horse. He’s still very fresh and has a great personality. You can see when he pulled up he was bucking and kicking.

“You’d better speak to the boss about coming back next year. I don’t know when the time is going to come for his genes to be preserved and that is the reality because we have never had a horse with as big a pair of lungs of as big a heart as he has. These are physical things and not things you believe in. His lungs are massive and his heart is massive. With most horses when you go a mile and a half they are at the end but this fella after going a mile and a half his heart is only just getting going up to 180 beats which is unbelievable.

“I’m staying in London tonight - I promised Anne Marie and the kids. So we’re going to a show tonight.”

MAGNIER NOT GOING TO RUSH YEATS DECISION

In the aftermath of the Group One Gold Cup, bookmakers were quick to chalk up Yeats for next year’s race with general quotes of 3/1 being handed out.

However, part-owner John Magnier isn’t going to rush the decision, saying: “We sat out to try to win the third Gold Cup and we’ve done that now. So we’ll have a discussion with the Nagles (part-owner David and Diane), the lads in the yard and the veterinary team at the end of the year and see what is the right thing to do for the horse.

“He’ll be eight next year so it would be like a grandad getting married! I don’t know. He was probably more impressive today than he ever was. It’ll be interesting but it’ll be a hard call. Rather than decide today, we just want to dot he right thing.

“We have to take everything into account. From the point of view of racing, you need horses like him.”

MURTAGH “ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTED”

Meanwhile Johnny Murtagh, who looks certain to win the London Clubs International Charity Trophy for being the leading jockey at Royal Ascot this week, was suitably delighted with Yeats’ performance.

The rider said: “He stays the trip well and has the heart of a lion and I knew that he would kill them. He’s a great horse and I’ve been lucky to have already won two Gold Cups but this lad is different, he has got that extra little touch of class to come back here and win a third one.

“I’m just absolutely delighted to be part of the team. There’s a lot of teamwork and Aidan O’Brien is a brilliant trainer and a brilliant man and I am grateful to be associated with him, Ballydoyle and the whole Coolmore operation.

“When Geordieland came upsides I was thinking I was going to make it hard for him and he’s going to have to get it a little bit harder than at York . I knew my lad would not give up he galloped right out to the line.

“He gave a second burst of energy. He’s a class act. He doesn’t ride like a seven-year-old. He was kicking afterwards and is a very fresh horse. Aidan knows him so well.

“The press lads were ringing me during the week, but I didn’t want to say anything about my chances. I just wanted to let the week unfold. Anything is possible here.”
RACE THREE: PLACE QUOTES - GOLD CUP

GEORDIE’S KING GEORGE OPTION

Trainer Jamie Osborne will mull over whether to send Gold Cup runner-up Geordieland for an audacious bid for King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes glory.

Last month’s Yorkshire Cup winner produced a huge display before just buckling under to the brilliance of Yeats late on.

It was the second year on the trot that the seven-year-old had finished second to Yeats in the staying race of the season.

Osborne said: “It was an exciting race and got my ticker going a bit! He has relaxed and run a great race. Shane Kelly gave him a great ride and we have been beaten again by a better horse at this trip. Yeats is an awesome horse over this trip.

“We might drop him back to a mile-and-a-half. He’s in the King George and we might give him a crack at it. We’ve only run him over staying trips - we’ve never given him the opportunity to do anything but that.

“This horse has so many gears and so much class. I think he is in great form at the moment and it might be the moment to try it. I’m not saying he will win, but he has got that class to travel well in it.”

Geordieland’s jockey Shane Kelly said: “Just briefly on turning in I thought we might go and beat Yeats. But in the last furlong he has just shown his class.”

Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to Khalid Abdulla, owner of third-placed Coastal Path, added: "He ran a super race and was probably just a bit immature at the moment for a race like this. He came there with every chance, got a run but is just a bit immature yet for this.

"But we’ll bring him back here for this race next year. There are plenty of staying races for him for the rest of the year although not many over two and a half miles so he’ll have to step back in trip."

Allegretto showed her running in the Henry II Stakes at Sandown where she was last to be all wrong as she stayed on into fourth place.

Cheveley Park Stud owner Chris Richardson said: “She hated that ground at Sandown but put that run behind her. She ran a fantastic race in a fantastic race - a vintage race.

“She didn’t quite settle for Ryan Moore early on. It was a sedate pace and she is the sort of filly who could do with a bit more tempo.

“I should think she will go for the Goodwood Cup again, we’ll see how she comes out of this.”

SECOND RACE WINNING QUOTES
RIBBLESDALE STAKES (GROUP 2)

MICHITA MAKES UP FOR EPSOM

The John Gosden-trained Michita bounced back from her seventh place finish in the Juddmonte Oaks at Epsom to run away with the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes under Jimmy Fortune.

“She ran a great race when winning at Goodwood but at Epsom she went into Tattenham Corner in about sixth place and came out in 14th which is the wrong way round. It isn’t a lot of help when you are trying to run the straight there,” said Gosden.

“Jimmy basically put her back in position because she didn’t handle the camber and he left her alone. I think because he had the intelligence to leave her alone in the last two furlongs rather than just wildly ride her is the difference between winning and getting beaten here today.

“She came here still a happy filly, she’s only done one breeze between races, and she’s done it well. I couldn’t be happier with her and Jimmy’s looked after her at Epsom and it has paid dividends here today. If they don’t handle Epsom, they don’t handle it - it’s a fabulous track but it is demanding. She’s young and didn’t quite have the balance there

“We will put her away now, give her a holiday and put her in the Yorkshire Oaks. She might compete against the colts as a four-year-old but not this season. I love to see older fillies racing older colts but at three, I like to keep them apart. The Oaks winner this year is very good and I think we should match them up again and see what older fillies are out there.”

Fortune added: “They went a decent gallop and she relaxed lovely early on. We had an ideal position, one off the rail, and I knew from four out she was going to win unless something was going to come from behind. She wasn’t doing a tap out there, she was just lobbing along and she was really enjoying herself and I always thought that I had everything in front of me covered. It was more from horses behind me that I was worried and Aidan has done us a few times this week!

“She proved to us that she stays a mile and a half well but I think it will be hard for us to beat the Oaks winner anywhere. But Michita is a Group 1 filly and I hope she will pick up a Group 1 somewhere along the line.”

Race 2 - Ribblesdale Stakes (Group Two) - Placed Quotes

WRAGG AND BECKETT HAVE PARK HILL IN MIND

Geoff Wragg saddled Arthur’s Girl to stay on from towards the rear to take second in the Group Two Ribblesdale Stakes behind impressive winner Michita.

The handler is looking towards the Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster for the filly. He said: “Arthur’s Girl ran a blinder. I knew she had the class after Salisbury because she picked up and was so quick. She has loads of speed.

“She didn’t mind the ground here today. I’m delighted with her. We’ll probably aim for the Park Hill and take something in along the way.

“She’s so relaxed. She came here last night and ate up.”

Meanwhile, Ralph Beckett, whose Hobby led until being headed inside the final furlong and a half, was delighted with his filly’s performance and also suggested that the Park Hill - the “fillies’ St Leger” - could be next on the agenda.

He said: “I’m thrilled to bits - chuffed. We were guessing on trip, guess on ground but we had to take our chance. I was pretty sure on trip but I hadn’t a clue about the ground. She seems more resilient though this year and she’s grown into herself.

“Seb (Sanders) has given her a lovely ride. He just said that he wished he had cranked it up earlier but I don’t think the placings would have made any difference. So we’re thrilled.

“I think the Park Hill would be the right race for her. My first thought when she went across the line was that she’d get a mile and six furlongs and the jockey agreed.”

RACE ONE: WINNING QUOTES - NORFOLK STAKES

JOHNSON BAGS SECOND NORFOLK STAKES WIN

Trainer Howard Johnson celebrated a second Norfolk Stakes success when his 11/4 favourite South Central prevailed by a head from Spin Cycle.

The Forest Camp colt made every yard to emulate Masta Plasta who struck in the Group 2 in 2005.

This victory will have significantly enhanced the value of South Central who remains for sale.

Co.Durham-based Johnson said: “I would like to sell him and I think he would be great in America with an American pedigree. That would be the plan and then we would restock.

“I nearly had him sold a fortnight ago - then it went quiet and we took the chance to run him.

“He did a bit of work the other day on the equitrack and he got Tombi off the bridle and he’s nearly the favourite for the Wokingham. I thought that will do me!

“He would actually not want the ground as fast as that and he wants six furlongs rather than five.

“This is a great result for the North. We had two winners at Cheltenham, one at Liverpool and one here. It’s lovely - hopefully we can keep it going.

“I couldn’t do it without (owner) Graham (Wylie). He’s the top man. When I die, I will take him with me!”

For winning jockey Robert Winston it was a first Royal Ascot winner since returning from a lengthy ban.

He said: “Howard said he is the best two-year-old that he’s ever had and the class he showed me when winning (a maiden) at Carlisle, there was only going to be one way he was going - that was Royal Ascot.

“We’ve been comparing this horse to Masta Plasta and he(South Central) has got a lot more talent and a lot more speed.”

Winston added: “I didn’t have a point to prove. It’s great to be here and it’s a great bonus to win but there’s other meetings and I’m still happy to ride at them. Listen, I’ve had a year off and it’s great to be back riding. It doesn’t make any difference where I’m riding.”

FIRST RACE PLACED QUOTES
NORFOLK STAKES (GROUP 2)

SO NEAR FOR SMART COLT

Bryan Smart continued his excellent record with juveniles at Royal Ascot when Spin Cycle lost out by a head to South Central in the Norfolk Stakes.

“Almost but not quite. It’s not a bad record - three two-year-old wins and a second here in the last four years,” said Smart. “He did hit the front at one stage and really proved himself today. He’ll be sticking to five furlongs and go for the Molecomb and things like that.”

Third-placed Prolific is likely to be stepping up in distance. “It will definitely be six furlongs next time,” said Harry Herbert, racing manager to owners Highclere Thoroughbred Racing.

“They’ve gone off very fast and he was just having to do too much to hold his position and he’ll be better at six. He has got such a long stride and was catching them at the end. We’ll see what Richard Hannon thinks but maybe he’ll go for the July Stakes and then definitely the Gimcrack.”

John Best, who saddled Flashmans Papers and Elegant Cad to finish fourth and fifth, added: “Steve (Drowne) said possibly the run the other day took the edge off Flashmans Papers in the closing stages and Liam (Keniry) said the ground went against the other. I’m lucky to have two good horses like that at the same times and I have some better ones still to run.”

JOCKEYS SAY GROUND IS FIRM

Jockeys once again confirmed that the ground was riding fast after the opening race on day three of Royal Ascot, the Group Two Norfolk Stakes.

Winning rider Robert Winston said: “The ground is very fast today - riding very quick.”

Runner-up jockey Ted Durcan said: “It’s riding fast out there today.”

Alan Munro: “It’s the fastest it has been this week.”

Michael Hills: “It’s riding firm today.”

Jamie Spencer: “It’s very firm.”

Darryll Holland: “It’s riding very fast out there today.”

WRAGG FINED £800

Trainer Geoff Wragg has been fined £800 after a syringe containing a substance, for which permission had not been granted, was found in the possession of his travelling head lad.

After the trainer admitted that the syringe had accidentally been brought into the stables, the stewards found him in breach of BHA Instruction C7 and imposed the fine.

GOING NEWS

The ground ahead of day three of Royal Ascot is

GOOD TO FIRM, FIRM IN PLACES

The GoingStick readings are 11.4 on the Straight Course, 9.6 on the Round Course and 10.3 overall.

Chris Stickels, Ascot’s Clerk of the Course, said: “We had one millimetre of rain overnight and also watered the whole course, putting down four millimetres of water with seven to eight millimetres around Swinley Bottom. I’d expect the ground to ride very similarly to yesterday.”

EUSTACE: ARTIST HAS REALISTIC CHANCE

Trainer James Eustace feels War Artist has solid claims for this Saturday’s Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The stunning six-furlong contest, worth £375,000, is the second leg of the Global Sprint Challenge staged at the Royal meeting, following Tuesday’s King Stand Stakes won by Equiano.

War Artist, a top-class performer in South Africa who was second to Assertive when carrying a 5lb penalty in the Group 2 Duke Of York Stakes, looks well drawn in stall one of the 20-runner event.

Newmarket-based Eustace said: “I am delighted with the draw although I would not jump on the ‘You’ve got to be drawn on the stands’ rail’ bandwagon. I would chose the stands’ rail irrespective of ground. The firm ground is absolutely great for him and I would hope we don’t get too much rain before the race.

“He did his last piece of work on the Trial Ground last week on Wednesday. I was delighted with how he went. He also had a spin - just a pipe-opener on Tuesday - and he seems to have come out of that well. We go to Ascot with a realistic chance, which is fantastic.”

Drawn right next to War Artist is second favourite Takeover Target, who was runner-up to last year’s Golden Jubilee Stakes winner Soldier’s Tale - also declared for Saturday’s showdown. The Australian raider comes into this weekend’s showpiece race, having run a blinder to also finish second in Tuesday’s King’s Stand Stakes.

Janiak said: “I am very happy with the draw. He has had an easy week since his race and is jumping out of his skin. We’re very confident.”

The international flavour of the race is underlined by the participation of New Zealand mare Seachange and the French-trained Marchand D’Or. The likely favourite is the Hughie Morrison-trained Sakhee’s Secret, whose seasonal reappearance saw him come second to Captain Gerrard in the Palace House Stakes. Another deserving maximum respect is last year’s Nunthorpe Stakes winner Kingsgate Native.

Peter Chapple-Hyam will be double-handed with his two-time Listed scorer Fat Boy and Aeroplane, who is taking a massive rise in class.

Chapple-Hyam said: “Fat Boy deserves to take his place, having done nothing wrong this season. He would not want too much rain. He’s drawn in 14 and you’d probably want to be drawn low which Aeroplane is in seven. It’s going to be very tough for him stepping up to this level but he has always worked like the best horse in the yard and so we’ll give him his chance and see how he gets on.”

Aidan O’Brien, trainer of three Group One winners inside the first two days of this year’s Royal meeting, has declared Astronomer Royal and US Ranger. Fellow Irish handlers Tommy Stack and Mick Halford field Myboycharlie and Snaefell respectively.

The field is completed by Assertive, Balthazaar’s Gift, Diabolical, Utmost Respect, Zidane, Sir Gerry, and Dark Missile.

Sakhee's Secret
From a prolific winning family, Sakhee's Secret had a lot to live up to in his early starts and didn't disappoint. His racecourse debut came over six furlongs at Windsor in July, 2006, when he was boxed in against the stands' rail at a vital moment but finished with good effect to take third. He made amends over the same course and distance the following month, when he raced prominently before stretching clear to score by six lengths. On the last start of his two-year-old season, Sakhee's Secret raced keenly and didn't quite see out the seven furlongs at Ascot in October, finishing fourth. Back over six furlongs for his seasonal debut at Newmarket in the Voute Sales Handicap at the Craven Meeting in April, he was held up until making headway approaching the final two furlongs to lead inside the last furlong and won by an easy five lengths. That victory started off a run of four successes in a row, the second of which came in the Listed Carnarvon Stakes at Newbury in May, where he was a comfortable three-length victor. A month later, he went to Salisbury for a competitive renewal of the Listed Cathedral Stakes. Once again, he quickened away from his rivals in impressive fashion to score in a fast time by four lengths. He sidestepped Royal Ascot last year but became the leading British-trained sprinter of 2007 when landing the Group One Darley July Cup at Newmarket by a neck from the previous season's star juvenile sprinter, Dutch Art. The winner travelled well under restraint towards the rear of the field and, once he got his gap, picked up impressively despite drifting into the centre of the track. Watering the course was blamed for his Betfred Sprint Cup defeat at Haydock on his final start of the season in September, when he could not quicken as he had previously; keeping on at one pace for fifth behind horses he had beaten at Newmarket. His 2008 campaign got off to a good start when he ran Captain Gerrard to a neck in the Group Three Palace House Stakes at Newmarket on May 4. Carrying a Group One penalty for his Darley July Cup success, Sakhee's Secret looked as though he would come on from his first run of the year and his trainer confirmed that the colt was not as forward as he had been the previous season.

Bridget Swire
Octogenarian owner/breeder Bridget Swire (born November 28, 1924), who lives at Fyfield in Hampshire, has been a tremendous supporter of both Flat and National Hunt racing for many years. A member of the family behind the Hong Kong trading corporation John Swires & Son (founders of the Cathay Pacific airline), her interest in racing was sparked during her time as a governess to Bill Harrington's children in Ireland and her friendship with the late Lavinia, Duchess of Norfolk. Her lilac colours have been carried to great success. The best mare to carry her distinctive silks was Palace Street, who was bought at the end of her two year old career in 1989 for 145,000 guineas at the Tattersalls December Sale and went on to win two Listed races before being retired to stud. She subsequently bred many winners for Miss Swire, most notably star sprinter Sakhee's Secret, who provided his owner/breeder with a magnificent victory against his elders in the Group One Darley July Cup last year, together with Listed success at both Newbury and Salisbury. His exploits in 2007 made her owner/breeder a worthy recipient of the TBA Silver Salver Special Merit Award at the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association's annual awards. Her mares are boarded with Malcolm and Jackie Humby at Redenham Park Stud, near Andover, while former trainer Toby Balding looks after her racing interests.

Hughie Morrison
Born November 7, 1960, the son of Lord Margadale, who bred Classic winners Julio Mariner, Juliette Marny, Scintillate at his Fonthill Stud, Hughie Morrison spent the first 12 years of his working life after leaving university in the manufacturing industry, working for a healthcare group, pharmaceutical company and lighting group. He had always taken a keen interest in racing, riding five point to point winners, and after giving up his job to spend two years assisting Paul Cole, he took out a dual purpose trainer's licence in 1997, having bought Summerdown Stables in East Ilsley from Simon Sherwood. He initially made his name with jumpers such as Champion Hurdle second Marble Arch and Frenchman's Creek, who won the 2002 William Hill National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. But his 92-strong team is now increasingly geared towards the Flat, where his biggest victories have come with the Darley July Cup winners Pastoral Pursuits (2005) and Sakhee's Secret (2007) and Prix Royal-Oak victor Alcaczar. He is Bridget Swire's godson.

Steve Drowne
Born on December 10, 1971, Berkshire-based Steve Drowne spent time at the British Racing School before a spell with trainer Chuck Spares and then two years apiece with Richard Holder and Ron Hodges. His first winner came courtesy of the Holder-trained Sigwell's Gold in a seller at Chepstow on September 15, 1990. He broke the 100-winner barrier for the first time in 2002 with 104 victories with his best season coming a year later with 108 victories. In 2007, he partnered 106 winners. His big-race successes include Harmonic Way in the 2001 Cork & Orrery (now Golden Jubilee) Stakes, Queen's Logic in the 2001 Cheveley Park Stakes, Sakhee's Secret in the 2007 Darley July Cup and his first win in Ireland on Mail The Desert in the 2002 Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes.

Seachange
Seachange, Dick Karreman's first home-bred Group One winner, was not offered for sale as a yearling due to her conformation problems. Having won her first three starts, she finished off 2005 with an impressive performance in the mile Group One New Zealand 1,000 Guineas at Riccarton in November, when the daughter of Cape Cross beat Everswindell by three-quarters of a length. After two further successes, Seachange suffered her first reversal in a Listed race at Te Rapa in August, 2006, before she went on to win the first two legs of the Hawkes Bay Jockey Club's Spring Triple Crown, the Mudgway Stakes and the Stoney Bridge Stakes at Hastings in September, beating former champion three-year-old Darci Brahma on both occasions. She then started favourite for the third leg and her first attempt at 10 furlongs, the Kelt Capital Stakes, where she hit the front halfway through the final furlong but could not hold the challenges of Legs and Kerry O'Reilly and finished a close third. Sent to Flemington for the Carnival, Seachange came second in the mile Myer Classic in November before a disappointing effort in the Emirates Stakes the following week. Darci Brahma then gained revenge on Seachange in the Group One Sharp Telegraph Handicap at Trentham in January, 2007, and she had to wait until the Group Three Mannerism Stakes at Caulfield at the end of February to record her first victory in six starts. Following a good second in the Group One Futurity Stakes at Caulfield the following month, Seachange really hit her stride in September, winning at the highest level in both the Mudgway Stakes and the Stoney Bridge Stakes at Hastings, before she was once again touched off in the Kelt Capital Stakes in October, this time coming off worst in a four-way photo finish. Seachange bypassed a tilt at the Cox Plate at Flemington, Australia, due to concerns about equine influenza and the mare instead stayed at home in New Zealand to finish second in the mile Group One Captain Cook Stakes at Trentham. After a break of nearly three months, Seachange defied top-weight to take the six-furlong First Sovereign Trust Telegraph Handicap by three and a half lengths at the same course on January 19, 2008. The superstar mare then recorded her seventh Group One success with a half-length victory in the seven-furlong Waikato Draught Sprint at Te Rapa the following month before travelling to Dubai. Having finished sixth in her prep race for the Dubai Duty Free, she ran a brave race in the near nine-furlong contest to finish a close sixth behind Jay Peg, despite the fact the she had lost weight and had been working on her own prior to the contest. Seachange was transferred from Ralph Manning's yard in May, 2008, because of the trainer's commitments in New Zealand and the mare will be in the care of compatriot Graeme Sanders for her British campaign.

Karreman Bloodstock Ltd
Queensland-based businessman Dick Karreman, in whose colours Seachange runs, has enjoyed considerable success with his racehorses in a relatively short space of time. Karreman emigrated from the Netherlands to Australia with his parents when he was 12 and ended up living in a caravan earning a living picking strawberries at the age of 15, having left school the previous year. He then drove a bread van before he bought his first truck when 19. He now runs a fleet of 45 Mack trucks as part of his quarry and transport business. His introduction to racing came about through an association with former New Zealand horseman Bevan Laming. Karreman's company had been carting sand from Laming's property for some years but Karreman had resisted the trainer's attempts to get him involved in racing. Eventually he weakened and bought I Am A Ripper for AUS$70,000 in February, 1999, who went on to earn prize money of more than AUS$500,000. Karreman made a substantial investment in the thoroughbred breeding industry in New Zealand with his purchase of the Oaks Stud in Cambridge in August, 2002, which is now home to the stallions Darci Brahma, Spartacus, Bachelor Duke and Keeninsky, as well as around 120 broodmares, including Seachange's dam Just Cruising. With guidance from his racing manager Rick Williams, Karreman has built the Oaks into one of the southern-hemisphere's top studs and his racing interests includes around 20 horses, mainly fillies, who are raced in the hope of gaining some black-type before becoming broodmares.

Graeme Sanders
Seachange was transferred to Te Awamutu-based trainer Graeme Sanders in May, 2008. Sanders, 58, the son of trainer Bill Sanders, has a rich pedigree of training racehorses having sent out over 1,000 winners in his native New Zealand, including 18 Group One scorers, as well as being champion trainer four times. His long list of major highlights includes success both on the Flat and over fences, with his principal achievements in the latter role being three Great Northern Hurdles (Mr Hickey twice and Execute) and the Grand National Steeplechase (Spray Doone). But it is as a trainer of noted Flat performers that Sanders has made the biggest impact and this season has proved one of his most memorable. Training in partnership with his son Mark, Sanders has won the Group One Stella Artois Auckland Cup with Prize Lady and the Group One First Sovereign Trust Easter Handicap with Pasta Post within the last few months. It was a notable feat taking the Auckland Cup with Prize Lady for the second year in succession and he has also previously won the Easter Handicap. Sanders has also won features in Australia, but he hasn't travelled outside Australasia with his horses. Sanders and his wife Gael were already planning a holiday in the UK to see Seachange make her English debut. The handler described the chance of training the mare as Atoo good an opportunity to turn down@. Work rider Jane Ivil, who rode Seachange to victory in a handicap at Hastings in August, 2007, and her partner, jockey Sean Collins, have been overseeing Seachange's preparation for Royal Ascot prior to Sanders' arrival.

Ted Durcan
Born in Co Mayo, Ireland, on February 25, 1973, Ted Durcan hailed from a family of lawyers and went to a boarding school in Naas before becoming apprenticed to Jim Bolger for six years, spending two years as a work rider and sharing a house with Tony McCoy and leading Irish trainer David Wachman. He served the final year of his apprenticeship in Britain with Jack Berry at Cockerham in Lancashire and he has gone on to enjoy considerable success in Dubai where he has been champion jockey seven times. He rode for the first time in Dubai in the 1997/98 season, as number two rider behind Paul Eddery at Paddy Rudkin's stable, and impressed Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, who offered him a retainer for the 1999/2000 season when he became champion rider for the first time with 58 successes, with wins including the Godolphin Mile on Conflict and Dubai Duty Free on Rhythm Band. Durcan, whose wife Sue works for Godolphin, enjoyed his best season in Britain in 2007 with 96 winners, headed by Light Shift in the Juddmonte Oaks. He is first jockey to Henry Cecil and also rides for the likes of Godolphin and Mick Channon, who provided him with his first two Royal Ascot wins in 2005 with Flashy Wings and Championship Point, as well as the Group One Prix Morny victor Silca's Sister. He also won the Group One Sprint Cup at Haydock twice for trainer Tim Easterby - on Pipalong in 2000 and Somnus in 2003.

Takeover Target
Joe Janiak bought the broken down and unraced Takeover Target for a mere AUS$1,400. The gelding made a resounding early impression on his trainer/owner, leaving Janiak with 30 stitches to a head wound after flooring him before a barrier trial. He was put out to grass for six months after that incident but went on to secure seven straight victories when finally making it to the track. The first of those came in a maiden over six furlongs at Queanbeyaan, Australia, on April 23, 2004, and the last in the sequence was the Group One Seppelt Salinger Stakes at Flemington on October 30 of that year. He continued to run respectably in top events without winning until securing the Group Three Summer Stakes at Doomben on December 10, 2005. He proceeded to rattle off a hat-trick, adding a Listed contest 14 days later and then taking his second Group One prize, the five-furlong Lightning Stakes at Flemington in February, 2006. Two further starts, including victory in the Group One Newmarket Stakes at Flemington the following month, preceded a trip to Britain. Takeover Target made a stunning British debut when taking the Group Two King's Stand Stakes at Ascot by a short-head from Benbaun and finished a creditable third to Les Arcs in the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes four days later. The gelding failed to fire when two lengths seventh to Les Arcs in the Group One Darley July Cup at Newmarket in July. He left for Japan and ran second in the Grade Two Centaur Stakes in September before landing the Group One Sprinters Stakes at Nakayama on October 1, by two and a half lengths from Meisho Bowler. He was controversially prevented from competing in Hong Kong in December after medication was found in his system. His return to Australia, brought a fifth to Bentley Biscuit in the Group One All-Aged Stakes at Randwick in April, 2007, and that was followed by a close second to the same rival over six furlongs at Doomben in the BTC Cup. He returned to top form in the seven-furlong Group One Carlton Draught Doomben 10,000 in May, when he swept aside star filly Gold Edition for a half-length verdict. Coming back to Royal Ascot for a second time, Takeover Target once again showed his liking for the Berkshire course, finishing a good fourth in his supposed Aprep@ race, the King's Stand Stakes before finishing a head second in the Golden Jubilee Stakes four days later. Connections bypassed the Darley July Cup at Newmarket, but Takeover Target suffered a mild bout of colic in July and injured himself in a paddock accident, forcing him out of action for several months. Having made a winning reappearance at Randwick at the start of December, Takeover Target returned to the Sydney racecourse three weeks later to take the six-furlong Listed Star City Razor Sharp Quality Stakes by a nose. Controversy followed on his next appearance at Randwick, when the gelding was demoted to second in the seven-furlong Group Two Villiers Stakes on January 5, 2008, following an objection by the runner-up Honor In War. Returning to Group One company, Takeover Target finished a creditable third behind Apache Cat on heavy ground in the Sydney City Lexus T J Smith Stakes, run over six furlongs at Randwick on April 26. Sent to Singapore to contest the KrisFlyer International Sprint, Takeover Target showed that he still retained all of his ability as a nine-year-old with a scintillating victory in the six-furlong contest at Kranji, beating Magnus by half a length and setting a new course record in the process, in spite of trainer Joe Janiak insisting that the horse was only 90 per cent wound up for the race. He was back again at Royal Ascot in 2008 for the third consecutive year. In Tuesday's Group One King's Stand Stakes he again ran a great race, running on well to finish the half-length runner-up behind Equiano.

Joe & Ben Janiak
Joe Janiak is based at Coffs Harbour in New South Wales, after moving his 10-strong string there following Takeover Target's Royal Ascot win in 2006. Born to Polish parents on a boat travelling to Australia, the 60-year-old is a former baker and taxi driver who shovelled manure at stables as a child to pay for school. He trained a couple of racehorses in a part-time capacity and lived in a caravan for over 12 years at Queanbeyaan, a country racetrack outside Canberra. He bought the broken down and unraced Takeover Target for a mere AUS$1,400 and had 30 stitches to a head wound when the gelding floored him before a barrier trial. He owns Takeover Target in partnership with his sons Ben and Scott. Ben, who trained horses under his father's name at Coffs Harbour, has recently taken out his own licence and trains out of Nick Olive's stable in Canberra.

Jay Ford
Based in Sydney, New South Wales, Jay Ford began riding Takeover Target as a 20-year-old apprentice in 2004 and has partnered the gelding to all of his 17 wins to date and 32 of his 33 starts. The star sprinter's trainer Joe Janiak gave Ford his first career win aboard Chumbolly. He was New South Wales Champion Apprentice in 2003/04 and, on July 10, 2004, became the first junior in over 25 years to ride five winners in a day at a Sydney Metropolitan meeting. He began riding in 2001as apprentice to Canberra trainer Keith Dryden, and spent the latter part of his apprenticeship with Rosehill trainer Kim Waugh. Takeover Target provided him with his first Group One win when taking the Seppelt Salinger Stakes at Flemington on October 30, 2004. As well as his global exploits on Takeover Target, Ford's big-race wins also include the 2005 Spring Champion Stakes and the 2006 Randwick Guineas aboard Hotel Grand.

War Artist
A four-time winner in South Africa for trainers Tony Rivalland and Herman Brown, War Artist has yet to score since arriving at James Eustace's Newmarket base in November but has been running with promise in defeat. His biggest success before coming to Britain was on his final start in the Grade One Mercury Sprint at Clairwood on July 15, 2007, over six furlongs. Previously, he had landed a maiden over six furlongs, a five-furlong graduation plate at Greyville and a six-furlong handicap at Scotsville, while he also finished third in the six-furlong Golden Horse Casino Sprint, also at Scotsville. The five-year-old had his first run for Eustace on the all-weather at Wolverhampton on March 8, when he ran a good race to take second in the Listed williamhill.co.uk Lady Wulfruna Stakes over seven furlongs. A month later he lined up at Newmarket for the Listed Connaught Access Flooring Abernant Stakes, finishing sixth after failing to get a clear run. Again over six furlongs and carrying his Group One penalty, he improved to stay on well for a neck second in the Group Two Duke of York Stakes behind Assertive at York on May 14.

Vintage Thoroughbreds
Jim Atkinson, a Canadian who resides in the Bahamas, is the main man behind Vintage Thoroughbreds, owner of War Artist, with Tim Jones effectively the European racing and bloodstock manager. Connections were sending War Artist, Rippling Ring and Elusive Fort from South Africa to North America when, for immigration and quarantine reasons, they had to stable them in the Northern Hemisphere for 60 days. Jones asked trainer James Eustace to look after the trio and only Elusive Fort made the final leg of his journey, with War Artist remaining with Eustace and Rippling Ring being sold to Andy Stewart to race over jumps with Paul Nicholls. Recently Atkinson sent a further two horses to Eustace from Brazil - Valentino Rossi (who could run at Royal Ascot prior to a crack at the Northumberland Plate) and sprinter Rubacuori. Atkinson's initial interest in horse racing came through the purchase of retired 2001 Breeders' Cup Mile winner Val Royal, who stands at the National Stud and sired 2007 2,000 Guineas winner Cockney Rebel, with Atkinson still retaining ownership. He was subsequently part of a number of partnerships but more recently elected to sole-own his horses. Through Robert Harrison, bloodstock agent for VIP Thoroughbreds, Atkinson acquired War Artist a month prior to his success in the Grade One Mercury Sprint, giving the owner his first taste of victory at the highest level. Although Atkinson's main business is in the gas industry in Canada and America, his family bought Amani Vineyards, based in the Stellenbosch region in South Africa, in 2002. Along with his daughter Lynde and her husband Rusty Myers, he turned the struggling business around in a short space of time and named the Atkinson Ridge Sauvignon Blanc after himself. War Artist now runs under the Vintage Thoroughbreds banner. The owner, who is making the journey over to Royal Ascot with a group from South Africa and the USA, is described as internationally-minded and is keen to run his horses at the big international meetings.

James Eustace
Born on March 26, 1960, James Maurice Percy Eustace has held a trainer's licence since 1990. Keen on hunting with the Ashford Valley in Kent, he rode on the point-to-point circuit with notable success and joined Mark Tompkins when he was 19, ending up as head lad/assistant trainer for four years. He took his experience and travelled to California to join John Sullivan. It was in Los Angeles that James proposed to his wife Gay (nee Oughton), who now acts as his secretary. Gay's brother, Hong Kong trainer David Oughton, won the 2005 Golden Jubilee Stakes with Cape Of Good Hope. On returning to Britain, James joined old school friend William Jarvis at Fountain House, Newmarket, for four years before taking the plunge and taking out a trainer's licence. With luck on his side, he purchased the famous Park Lodge Stables in Newmarket from Chief Singer's owner Jeff Smith, who decided to sell up after trainer Ron Sheather retired. The 1939 2000 Guineas and Derby winner Blue Peter was trained at the yard by Sir Jack Jarvis. He gained his first success on the level when Falcon's Domain scored by a short-head at Chepstow on May 28, 1990, while his first winner over jumps came courtesy of Prime Of Life, who comprehensively won a maiden hurdle at Worcester on June 19, 1997. He had to wait 11 years before he saddled his first Group winner, when Rapscallion landed the Group Three Horris Hill Stakes at Newbury on October 29, 2001. He is no stranger to Royal Ascot success, having saddled Refuse To Lose to success in the 1998 Royal Hunt Cup. He has just over 30 horses in training.

Kerrin McEvoy
Kerrin McEvoy, who was born on October 24, 1980, was appointed second rider, behind Frankie Dettori, to Godolphin in 2004 and has established himself as one of the leading riders in Britain. He partnered his first British winner when scoring on Godolphin's Destination Dubai at Haydock on May 1, 2004, and enjoyed a great first British Classic ride in that season's 2004 1000 Guineas on second-placed Sundrop. He was again runner-up on his first Vodafone Derby ride, Rule Of Law, who went on to give the rider his initial Classic success in the 2004 St Leger. McEvoy - whose father Philip was a jockey - hails from the fishing hamlet Streaky Bay, six hours west of Adelaide, and shot to prominence in his home country in 2000 when winning the Melbourne Cup aboard Brew, becoming the second-youngest jockey to ever win Australia's premier race. His Group One successes include the St James's Palace Stakes (2005 Shamardal), Prix Jacques le Marois (2005 Dubawi), Yorkshire Oaks (2005 Punctilious), Falmouth Stakes (2006 Rajeem), and the Grosser Preis Von Baden (2004 & 2005 Warrsan).
