ROYAL ASCOT 2008
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
SECOND DAY, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 18

CROWD UP & LOOKING FORWARD TO THE REST OF ROYAL ASCOT

Today's attendance: 41,911

2007: 41,096

Ascot’s Chief Executive, Charles Barnett, said: “It has been another fantastic day’s racing with Duke Of Marmalade putting in arguably the best performance of any middle distance horse in Europe this year in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes.

"Today’s crowd was in line with predictions and pleasing. Tomorrow's Gold Cup Day crowd will be in excess of 70,000 as normal and pre-sales indicate that Friday will be in the region of 60,000.

“For the first time, there will be over 70,000 people at Royal Ascot Saturday this year, which is quite incredible given that the record is 62,056 in reopening year.”

COURSE WILL BE WATERED TONIGHT

The going remains GOOD TO FIRM, FIRM IN PLACES after the second day of Royal Ascot.

Chris Stickels, Ascot’s Clerk of the Course, said: “There is a possibility of three to five millimetres of rain tonight but that is not certain and we will be watering again tonight.

“We’ll put about four millimetres down and a bit more around Swinley Bottom - maybe eight millimetres. If we do get the rain it will just ease the track a bit more.

“When any rain we might get clears in the morning it is meant to be a fine day after that.”

Race 1 - Jersey Stakes - Winning Quotes

AQLAAM LANDS MONSTER JERSEY GAMBLE

Aqlaam landed the gamble of the week so far when winning Wednesday’s opener, the seven-furlong Group Three Jersey Stakes, by two lengths from Il Warrd.

The Sheikh Hamdan-owned colt, as high as 11/1 this morning, was returned at 13/2 and won cosily despite showing some of his inexperience in the closing stages.

Successful trainer William Haggas commented: “That was fantastic. I am thrilled to bits.

“We knew he had come on a lot from his maiden and he has always been a nice horse.

“He has beaten a smart horse in the second today and the third (Dream Eater) was fifth in the 2,000 Guineas. He has come a long way.

“Unfortunately, when he ran here last year he suffered a hairline fracture and was lame when he came back to the stables. We had to keep him in his box for three months and needed a long time to recuperate. My wife Maureen played a large part in getting him right and all my staff have worked very hard. I just get all the glory when it goes right!

“I don’t know where he will go next. Today was the plan - we were never tempted to run him in the St James’s Palace Stakes. I didn’t put him in the Sussex Stakes as I didn’t think that with his past problems that going uphill at Goodwood would be suitable for him. There are plenty of races for him if he’s good enough.

“Although he is by Oasis Dream, there is a fair amount of stamina in his pedigree and he is actually related to Persian Punch.”

Richard Hills, the winning jockey added: “We were confident after his maiden win at Newbury and he has improved tremendously in the last six weeks. His last two pieces of work were fantastic.

“Ascot is a big, wide place and he just looked around a bit. We hit the front a bit sooner than I would have liked but you have to remember that this is only his third run.

“Hopefully he is on an upward curve.”

FIRST RACE PLACED QUOTES
JERSEY STAKES (GROUP 3)

WARRD RUNS BLINDER

Godolphin’s Il Warrd ran an excellent race to finish two lengths behind the facile winner Aqlaam in the opening Jersey Stakes.

Frankie Dettori, who partnered the runner-up, said: "Il Warrd ran good - he was just beaten by a better horse. He settled much better today."

Saeed bin Suroor, the Godolphin trainer, said: "Il Warrd ran very well - we are happy how he did in the race. He was too keen in his last race and this shorter trip of seven furlongs suited him better.

"I was disappointed with (ninth-placed) Calming Influence and I will have to see how he comes out of this race.”

Kerrin McEvoy, the rider of Calming Influence who was sent off 9/2 favourite, commented: "I expected him to show a little bit more. He picked up really well when he won and today, from a nice spot, he just stayed on without showing that same spark."

Dream Eater, who had finished fifth in the stanjamesuk.com 2000 Guineas on his only previous start this season, put in another solid effort to come third.

“It was another very good run,” said his trainer Andrew Balding. “I thought beforehand that the drop back in trip would help but he was actually galloping on at the end. It’s back to the drawing board now to decide what we do next.”

Hughie Morrison, trainer of fourth-placed Stimulation, said: “He ran a blinder and I think this was a Group 1 masquerading as a Group 3 - the winner is a very good horse and the form of the third was confirmed.

“Today was ultra-competitive and I hope that one day he might win a big race. He’s definitely a Group 3 winner waiting to happen and maybe even better than that and he’s a horse we think will last.”

GROUND

GROUND STILL FAST

Shane Kelly, rider of Red Alert Day, said: “They put four millimetres of water on last night but it is still quick ground.”

Steve Drowne, rider of fourth-placed Stimulation, said: “It’s fast ground.”

Martin Dwyer, rider of Tawaash, said: “It’s good fast ground.”

William Buick, rider of Bob’s Surprise, said: “It’s just on the firm side of good.”

The loan dissenting voice was that of War Officer’s jockey Christophe Lemaire who called the ground ‘Good’.

SECOND RACE WINNING QUOTES
WINDSOR FOREST STAKES (GROUP 2)

SABANA FOR FRANCE

Jockey Christophe Lemaire brought the Alain de Royer Dupre-trained Sebana Perdida with a well-timed run to beat Heaven Sent in the final furlong of the Windsor Forest to bring a first winner for France at Royal Ascot this year.

“I was optimistic beforehand and she has a very good acceleration,” said de Royer Dupre. “Last year she was always pulling and too fresh but she’s not the same now. She is much better this year and really coming to herself.

“I deliberately took time between her last run and today because she is a very light filly.

“She may go for the Prix D’Astarte, a Group 1 at Deauville (on August 3), but needs to have her ground, she wants it good. She is a tough filly and I always thought she could stay a mile and maybe further.”

Lemaire added: “It was fantastic. The filly was very, very generous because she came at the end to catch the leader, who was maybe a length in front and I knew the English horses were very strong, very tough. She deserves this win.

“The mile for my filly is maybe the furthest she can go and I thought it would be very difficult but she’s made it. It’s fantastic for the team and thank you to Monsieur de Royer-Dupre, he’s done a great job.

“I am sorry for Ryan Moore (on the runner-up Heaven Sent) but his time will come.”

This was Lemaire’s first Royal Ascot winner at Ascot although he rode Chineur to victory in the 2005 King’s Stand Stakes when the meeting was held at York.

RACE TWO: THE WINDSOR FOREST STAKES
PLACE QUOTES

HEAVEN SENT TEAM EYE FALMOUTH STAKES

Cheveley Park Stud director Chris Richardson pointed the way to the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket on July 9 for Windsor Forest runner-up Heaven Sent.

The five-year-old mare looked set to scoop the spoils when hitting the front over a furlong out.

But she was reined in close home by Sabana Perdida and ultimately went down by three parts of a length.

Richardson said: “She has run a fantastic race and just emptied out in the last 100 yards. Take nothing away from the winner, who liked the ground. Maybe a drop of rain might have suited us.

“We’ve put her in the Falmouth Stakes and we’ll give that serious consideration if she comes out of this race fine.”

There was no fairytale end to the paddocks-bound Grecian Dancer’s career. But she still signed off with a top effort, finishing third.

Her trainer Ch arles O’Brien said: “I think she’s run a really great race.

“She was squeezed for room at a crucial stage and it cost her a length or so but I’m not sure it’s not made much difference to the final result. She is in foal and is off to the paddock tomorrow.”

Mick Channon, trainer of fourth-placed Majestic Roi, said: “I’m thrilled with that especially as she was giving them 5lb. She has taken a long time to come to hand this year but we’ve pretty much got her right now. Will we give consideration to the Falmouth? Absolutely!”

RACE THREE: THE PRINCE OF WALES STAKES - WIN QUOTES

HE’S THE REAL DEAL! O’BRIEN SALUTES DUKE

Duke of Marmalade produced a brilliant performance in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes to give trainer Aidan O’Brien and jockey Johnny Murtagh their third Group 1 victory at this year’s Royal Ascot. It was a first success for both the trainer and jockey in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes.

The four-year-old Danehill colt made it three Group 1 victories on the trot when scoring by a comprehensive four lengths from Phoenix Tower and is unbeaten this year.

Hailing the even money favourite, O’Brien said: “I am delighted with him. It was unbelievable. He’s an unbelievable horse and, with every run, he’s getting better. He’s the real deal.

“You are never confident before a race like this but the horse was training well and Seamus who rides him was very happy as was Johnny who was riding him in all his work.

“He said the horse was making good progress. When Johnny makes a statement about a horse you have to listen: he was very bullish today. He said he was going to be very positive on him.”

O’Brien outlined that it hasn’t been easy for the four-year-old to get to these heights, having suffered injury problems.

“He had a bad fracture after Goodwood as a two-year-old and he had pins put in his front joint and they were hurting him last year. We were never really able to train him because he was semi-lame all the time.He wasn’t able to use himself the way he’s using himself this year.”

A pin was catching a ligament but that was tweaked over last winter and the results have been explosive.

“He had that speed at two but lost it last year because of the problems,” added O’Brien who wasn’t in a position to outline the Duke’s next start. “He has got it back again now. He is a very good horse.”

“He is one of those horses you don’t mind coming back to a mile with. There’s even a chance he could get a mile and a half. After this week, we will sit and talk to see where the horses are going to go next. It’s going to depend on where Henrythenavigator and Mount Nelson go - that will determine where his next run is. He gets a mile and a quarter very easily. Looking at him today, you couldn’t say that he wouldn’t go further.”

He is as short as 6/1 (vcbet, Stan James) for the King George back at Ascot on July 26.

A delighted Murtagh said: “He’s up there with the best I’ve ridden. He’s the first horse I rode when I came back from Dubai. Aidan put me on him and I cantered up the Curragh.

“Aidan has been getting him ready for this all year. He’s been bringing him along slowly winning Group Ones with him. Today was the horse’s big target and he really came good.”

Race 3 - Prince of Wales’s Stakes

CECIL - I UNDERESTIMATED MARMALADE

Trainer Henry Cecil was pleased with the performance of runner-up Phoenix Tower in the Group One Prince Of Wales’s Stakes, although he revealed that he had underestimated how good the winner Duke Of Marmalade actually was.

The Newmarket handler said of the runner-up, who went down by four lengths: “He ran really well and is improving.

“There was a bit of scrimmaging and we lost about a length and a half, but we wouldn’t have beaten the winner.

“The winner is better than I thought he was. I knew he was a good horse, but I underestimated him.

“Our horse showed he got the trip well today and there are races like the Eclipse and the Juddmonte International to consider.”

A further short-head back in third was the fast-finishing Pipedreamer.

His trainer John Gosden said: "There was a lot of scrimmaging early on and that got him pulling a bit. They all wanted to follow the favourite and he got a good run through but just got checked again which probably cost him second.

"He ran a great race and on ratings it’s probably his best run - it’s a good time to do it.

“He got lost on that loose ground at Sandown and ran no race in the Earl of Sefton at Newmarket. There are some nice Group 2s and Group 3s he could have a crack at as well as the Group 1s so we’ll have a look at everything."

Sir Michael Stoute, trainer of fifth-placed Ask, added: "We got cut up a furlong and a half out, we got rammed. He’ll step up in trip now."

Race 4 - Royal Hunt Cup - Winning Quotes

AVIATOR FLIES TO ROYAL HUNT CUP SUCCESS

Mr Aviator, a 25/1 chance, landed the big handicap of the day, the Royal Hunt Cup, by a neck from Docofthebay under Richard Hughes for trainer Richard Hannon.

Drawn in stall four, the winner was always in a prominent position close to the stands’ side rail in the mile contest up the straight course.

Richard Hannon said: “He is a good horse, although we always thought he was more of a mile and a quarter horse and had originally planned to run him over that trip tomorrow.

“However after he ran at Epsom last time, Richard (Hughes) suggested that we go for this race as he didn’t handle the bends and undulations very well there and he thought that the horse would be better up a straight course.

“With the weight he has won with today, he is probably up to winning at Listed level.

“The favourite (Bankable) beat a good horse of ours, Ordnance Row, very easily at Goodwood but when you looked at his form, he definitely does seem to prefer softer ground.

“Something always comes along to save those bookmakers!”

Richard Hughes added: “He is a good all-weather horse, as there are no lumps and bumps on that surface and the level surface helped him again today.

“I was drawn in stall four, so could either go up the middle or go to the rail. I decided to go to the rail and sit and suffer. Going up the middle would have helped the favourite. Favourites are there to be beaten and the favourite today was drawn high.

“I don’t think I have been as fast in my life with the speed they went in the early stages, and they were virtually walking in the final furlong.

“My horse is very genuine. When he went a neck up, I thought the line was never going to come.

“This was a great training performance from Richard. The horse came back very sore after Epsom and needed a lot of attention.

“I have always thought that he could be the sort of horse that could win a Winter Derby.”

FOURTH RACE PLACED QUOTES
ROYAL HUNT CUP

SECOND FOR DOCOFTHEBAY

Royal Hunt Cup runner-up Docothebay could make a quick reappearance at Royal Ascot in the Buckingham Palace Stakes after losing out by a neck to Mr Aviator in today’s race.

“That was annoying,” said the second’s trainer Jamie Osborne. “He has run a solid race and if he’s OK he’ll take his chance on Friday - if he’s OK then why not. Like his owner (Paul Dixon) it is hard to get to the bottom of him.

“He has been ultra-consistent all the way through, he’s been second and third in some valuable races and his day will come - hopefully on Friday.”

Dandy Nicholls, trainer of third-placed Royal Power, added: “I thought when he went for home that he would have won but he’s run a blinder. The second and winner are good horses. I was going to run him in a claimer next week but I think we’ll swerve that now!”

Kavachi surprised Gary Moore by finishing fourth. “He’s an improving horse and ran the biggest race of his life and surprised me a bit. He likes to sit at the back and pick them off and will go for the big mile and mile and a quarter handicaps. He’s in the John Smith’s Cup at York although I am not sure whether he’d get in.”

The red-hot 13/8 favourite Bankable finished fifth and his rider Frankie Dettori blamed the draw. “We had a bad draw and it couldn’t be helped. Look at the first three - they were drawn one, four and five - and we were in 25. I was drawn badly, it was as simple as that,” said Dettori.

BOOKMAKER REACTION

RELIEF ALL ROUND FOR BOOKIES

There was widespread relief among the bookmaking fraternity as Bankable, the 13/8 favourite, failed to make the frame in the Royal Hunt Cup.

Bookies were bracing themselves for a double whammy after the well-backed even money favourite Duke Of Marmalade had obliged in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes.

But Mr Aviator took the famous handicap and Bankable could only finish fifth to let the layers off the hook.

Ladbrokes’ Mike Dillon: “It’s the great escape - I’m thinking of changing my name to Steve McQueen!

“To get Bankable out of the first four is scarcely believable...a massive relief.”

Paddy Power, spokesman for Irish bookies Paddy Power, said: “Duke Of Marmalade was the best backed horse of the year with us and we lost just shy of £1million on him.

“We thought we were toast after that and a victory for Bankable would have put jam on it for punters.

“Early estimates are that double would have seen the betting industry losing around £40million.”

BANKABLE FAILS TO OVERCOME POOR RECORD FOR JOLLIES IN ROYAL HUNT CUP

Bankable, sent off the 13/8 favourite in today’s big handicap, the Royal Hunt Cup (4.20pm), failed to enhance the very poor record of market leaders in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot by finishing fifth. Only four favourites have scored since the famous mile handicap resumed towards the end of the second World War in July, 1945.

The Luca Cumani-trained dual course and distance winner, successful in four of his five starts, started the shortest-priced favourite within that period, with Queensborough II previously holding the record for being the shortest-priced market leader at 2/1 in 1970.

However, the four-year-old could only finish seventh, having been prominent for most of the mile trip before weakening with more than two furlongs left to race.

The most recent winning favourite came in 1996, when the William Haggas-trained front-running Yeast landed the spoils by two and a half lengths under Kieren Fallon at 8/1. Before that four-year-old, the previous successful favourite was in 1989. On that occasion, Jeremy Tree saddled Khalid Abdulla’s 5/1 chance True Panache to score by a length under Pat Eddery.

In 1976, the Noel Murless-trained Jumping Hill started the 6/1 joint-favourite with Yamadori. Victory went to the Lester Piggott-ridden first-named, who took up the running after three furlongs to come home four lengths clear, with his market rival filling third place.

The only other winning favourite since 1945 was Queen Elizabeth II’s Alexander, who started a 13/2 chance in 1956. Trained by Cecil Boyd-Rochfort and ridden by Harry Carr, the four-year-old led inside the final furlong to win by half a length.

Three years later in 1959, the Queen’s Pall Mall, who had won the 1958 2,000 Guineas, started the 5/2 favourite but went down by a length and a half behind Faultless Speech.

In recent years, the majority of the winners have started at odds in double figures, while short-priced favourites have been turned over. In 2001, a gamble went astray on the Sir Michael Stoute-trained 3/1 favourite Tough Speed, who finished ninth under Fallon. It was a similar story for the same trainer/jockey combination two years later when Funfair finished one place closer at 4/1.

Since the race was first run in 1843, there have only been a few other winners returned at prohibitive odds, including two at 3/1, Bishop Romford’s Cob (1844) and Victor (1863). Other short-priced winners include 100/30 chances See Saw (1869), Thuringian Prince (1875) and Peter (1881), along with 7/2 winners Ephesus (1852), Hesperithusa (1858) and Quarrel (1896).

FIFTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
QUEEN MARY STAKES (GROUP 2)

LANGS BRING FIRST ROYAL ASCOT WIN FOR QUINLAN

Newmarket trainer Mick Quinlan had his first Royal Ascot success when Langs Lash belied her 25/1 starting price to land the Queen Mary Stakes by a neck from Shyrl.

But the victory was not a surprised to Quinlan’s brother and assistant Noel, who said: “Alan Munro came and rode her in work on Thursday and said she was his best chance of a winner this week. Her win wasn’t a surprised to us and I’ve got the winning betting tickets in my pocket to prove it.

“First time out she won by four lengths at Folkestone but made all and learned nothing and then she was drawn on the wrong side behind Bahamian Babe at York and had stage fright halfway through before she got going in the last 100 yards and was just touched off. I was pretty confident the winner that day wouldn’t beat us again.

“I think she’ll get six furlongs and we’ll talk to the owner and think about the Lowther.”

Jockey Alan Munro added: “It means everything to have a winner here. I thought I was going to struggle for the week. Langs Lash was my best chance, I thought she’d get placed. She really finds, she’s tough - like riding a colt really. She has a good mental attitude.

“I had the panoramic view so I could see they were behind us. She’s done it well. She showed so much speed that before I knew where I was, I was at the two pole. Then I’ve asked here to quicken and she’s found. Then it got down to a fight and she pulled it out.

“Riding in England is the best place in the world and riding winners at Royal Ascot is the pinnacle. Obviously you’ve got the Epsom Derby but this is a huge week. Everyone says it’s like the Olympics and I agree - it’s just fantastic.”

RACE FIVE:QUEEN MARY STAKES
PLACE QUOTES

SO CLOSE FOR SIMON

Rookie trainer Simon Callaghan didn’t know whether to laugh or cry after Shyrl came so close to giving him a first ever Royal Ascot success.

The Acclamation filly came within a neck of winning the Queen Mary Stakes but was just held by Langs Lash.

Callaghan said: “She has run very well on what was only her second start. It was a great run to come second, although you also realise just how close you were to winning.

“Frankie (Dettori) said she is very tough and very honest. She has finished her race well.

“We will take her back and have a think about what we’ll do next.”

Andy Oliver, trainer of third-placed Connie Mac, said: “I’m delighted with her.

“She put up a great run on her debut at the Curragh and we thought if she had come on we’d have a good chance with her here.

“It was a bit of a rush getting her prepared and her inexperience probably showed early on. I would just have liked to have had the opportunity of giving here one more run before here.

“I would like to get her maiden broken and then we will see where we go from there.”

RACE SIX:SANDRINGHAM HANDICAP STAKES (LISTED)
WIN QUOTES

FESTIVALE SO TOUGH IN SANDRINGHAM SUCCESS

Festivale showed a brilliant attitude to get the job done in the Sandringham Handicap.

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy was in inspired form as he drove out the daughter of Invincible Spirit to collar Illusion in the closing strides for a neck triumph.

Winning trainer John Dunlop said: “Kerrin gave her a beautiful ride. He gave her a chance early on, having been drawn out wide which we were a bit nervous about before.

“He has brought her over quietly and she’s ended up doing it well. I couldn’t be more pleased as today was the plan.

“She’d run well in her other two starts (this season) before this race and had every chance of running well.

“It’s another one for Invincible Spirit and I’m delighted. We will have a ponder about where we go next.”

McEvoy, who was celebrating his first Royal Ascot win at Ascot having previously succeeded at York on Shamardal in 2005, said: “I really had to get stuck into her - Seb (Sanders on Illusion) had got first run on us. But she has really shown a lot of guts to keep going all the way. I am delighted to have my first Royal Ascot victory at Ascot.”

Race 6 - Sandringham Handicap (Listed) - Placed Quote/Other News

GOSDEN VERY SATISFIED WITH ILLUSION

Trainer John Gosden was more than satisfied with the performance of Illusion, the neck runner-up behind Festivale in the concluding Listed Sandringham Handicap. The Anabaa filly looked to have the race in the bag as she went clear entering the final furlong before finally being overhauled close to the line.

The Newmarket handler said of the 7/1 chance: ”I am delighted with her, that was a very good run.

“The winner has just come and beaten us, but she is now Listed-placed.

“She really enjoyed the ground out there today - last time out at Doncaster it was too soft for her.

“Today we were 4lb wrong at the weights but she showed us it was the right decision to come here and run, although it probably hasn’t done her handicap mark much good!”

Jockey Alan Munro was banned for three days (Wednesday, July 2 - Friday, July 4 inclusive) following his winning ride on Langs Lash in race five, the Queen Mary Stakes.

The stewards found Munro guilty of improper riding in that he used his whip with excessive frequency without giving his mount sufficient time to respond.

PREVIEW: GOLD CUP

CALLAGHAN POSITIVE AHEAD OF GOLD CUP

Trainer Simon Callaghan has given Finalmente a glowing reference ahead of the six-year-old’s bid for Ascot Gold Cup glory tomorrow (Thursday, June 19).

The first-season trainer struck gold with the Kahyasi gelding last time out, securing narrow success in the Group 2 Henry II Stakes at Sandown.

Now connections have their fingers crossed that Finalmente can run another big one in the Group 1 Gold Cup in which he finished third to Yeats last year.

Callaghan said: “He has come out of his Sandown win very well. We think he has improved for the race from a fitness point of view.

“We are very hopeful. He does have ground to make up on Yeats but we feel he has progressed from last year.

“He is very flexible as to ground. In an ideal world we would just like a bit of rain but, really, ground comes all the same to him.”

Yeats is as short as 6/5 to complete a Gold Cup three-timer and warmed up for his defence with a Listed victory at Navan.

The only horse to register a Gold Cup hat-trick was the legendary Sagaro, who was successful in 1975, 1976 and 1977.

The main danger is likely to come from Coastal Path, who is undefeated in six career starts.

He is the half-brother to three smart stayers, including Reefscape, who was second in a Gold Cup.

Popular Geordieland delivered a long-promised big-race victory when taking the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup at York last month.

He will seek to go one better than last year’s Gold Cup when Yeats conquered him by a length and a half.

Allegretto, last season’s Group One Prix Royal-Oak heroine, was last to Finalmente in the Henry II Stakes but shaped as if the race was likely to bring her on.

Regal Flush, who was third in Listed company at York last time, and Sagara vie to give Godolphin a fifth Gold Cup success following on from Papineau in 2004, Classic Cliche (2000 & 1998) and Classic Cliche (1996). The 11-strong field is completed by Le Miracle, Thundering Star, Diamond Quest and Baddam.

PREVIEW: RIBBLESDALE STAKES

CHAPPLE-HYAM HOPING
FOR RAIN FOR CAPE AMBER

Noseda poised with Waffle for Norfolk Stakes

Peter Chapple-Hyam, trainer of Cape Amber, won’t mind if the anticipated rainfall arrives in time for tomorrow’s Ribblesdale Stakes.

The Cape Cross filly, who was second in the Group 3 Musidora Stakes and then sixth in the Group 1 Oaks on June 6, is suited by a bit of underfoot ease.

Chapple-Hyam said: “I think she will run in the Ribblesdale with rain forecast. She ran well enough for a relatively inexperienced filly at Epsom on what was just her third career start.

“She came out of the race fine and we feel she’s worth another try over 1m 4f.”

Fellow Newmarket-based trainer Jeremy Noseda has Waffle lined up for the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes.

The Kheleyf colt got the job done to land the odds first time up in a five-furlong Leicester maiden.

He met with a hitch after that but Noseda has nursed him back for a shot at the Norfolk.

Noseda said: “Unfortunately he had a small setback after winning on his first start and we couldn’t run him again before this.

“He is a sharp two-year-old type and the race tomorrow will answer questions as to whether he is of this calibre.”

LITERATO OUT OF PRINCE OF WALES’S STAKES

Literato is now a non-runner in today’s Group One highlight, the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (3.45pm).

Godolphin’s four-year-old has been withdrawn on account of the fast going.

He follows his stable companion Rio De La Plata, who was taken out of yesterday’s St James’s Palace Stakes, also due to the going.

GOOD TO FIRM, FIRM IN PLACES

The penetrometer readings are 11.0 on the Straight Course, 9.4 on the Round Course and 10.0 overall.

Chris Stickels, Ascot’s Clerk of the Course, said: “We were dry overnight and watered the whole track, putting four millimetres of water down.

“According to the weather forecast, there might be light showers today and then three to five millimetres of rain overnight.”

BETTING NEWS - MARMALADE IS BEST BACKED HORSE OF YEAR

Two of the bankers of this year’s Royal Ascot are in action this afternoon and it has been Duke Of Marmalade in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (3.45pm) who has proved much more popular than Bankable in the Royal Hunt Cup (4.20pm).

“Duke Of Marmalade has been the best-backed horse of the year with us and is 6/4 from 7/4,” said Paddy Power spokesman Tony Coleman. “In contrast we have eased Bankable out to 11/5 from 2/1.”

Ladbrokes’ David Williams added: “Our satchels are bursting so much after yesterday’s results that we are having them re-seamed. We haven’t changed any prices today but of the two hot pots, Duke Of Marmalade has been much more popular at 6/4 than Bankable at 2/1.”

Duke Of Marmalade is 6/4 from 13/8 with Blue Square (who have also trimmed Bankable from 9/4 to 2/1) and 11/8 from 6/4 with totesport

The William Haggas-trained Aqlaam has been all the rage in the opening Jersey Stakes (2.30pm), shortening from 8/1 to 15/2 with Coral, 7/1 from 8/1 with Boylesports, 8/1 from 11/1 with Paddy Power and 15/2 from 10/1 with totesport.

In the same race Skybet have pruned Strike The Deal from 25/1 to 18/1, Calming Influence is 4/1 from 9/2 with VCBet, Jupiter Pluvius is 11/2 from 13/2 with Paddy Power, who have also trimmed Stimulation to 8/1 from 11/1. Boylesports have cut Generous Thoughts into 16/1 from 20/1, Red Alert Day is 16/1 from 25/1 with VCBet while Dream Eater is 13/2 from 15/2.

Baharah is 11/2 from 6/1 with Boylesports in the Windsor Forest Stakes (3.05pm) while Grecian Dancer is 10/1 from 14/1 with Skybet while totesport have shortened Barshiba from 33/1 to 25/1.

Away from Duke Of Marmalade, Sixties Icon (10/1 from 11/1 with Blue Square), Pipedreamer (8/1 from 10/1) and Ask (8/1 from 9/1 with Coral) are others backed in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes.

Among the many movers in the Royal Hunt Cup are Pricewise selection Flipando (14/1 from 25/1 with Stan James) and Docofthebay, who is 10/1 from 12/1 Skybet, Boylesports and Paddy Power and 11/1 from 12/1 with totesport.

Overturn is 25/1 from 40/1 with Skybet, 28/1 from 40/1 with VCBet while Oceana Gold is 25/1 from 28/1 with William Hill, 20/1 from 25/1 with totesport and 16/1 from 25/1 with Cashmans. Boylesports have also trimmed Lang Shining (13/2 from 7/1), We’ll Come (7/1 from 8/1) and Extraterrestrial (14/1 from 16/1).

The Tommy Stack-trained Sugar Free, another Pricewise selection, is 8/1 from 14/1 with Stan James, 10/1 from 12/1 with VCBet, 9/1 from 12/1 with Boylesports, Skybet and totesport and 8/1 from 12/1 with Blue Square. Boylesports and totesport have trimmed the favourite Danehill Destiny into 3/1 from 100/30, Paddy Power go 20/1 from 25/1 about Rebecca De Winter. Lucky Leigh is 11/1 from 16/1 with Cashmans.

In the concluding Sandringham Handicap (5.30pm), Cheveley Park Stud’s Illusion is 8/1 from 11/1 with Skybet, 9/1 from 10/1 with totesport while Festivale is 9/1 from 11/1 with Skybet and Shabiba is 15/2 from 8/1 with totesport.

BLUESQUARE.COM STEWARDS’ CUP AT GOODWOOD ATTRACTS TOP-CLASS ENTRY OF 127 - SPONSOR OPENS BETTING

A top-class entry of 127 has been received for the £100,000 Bluesquare.com Stewards’ Cup over six furlongs on the final day of Glorious Goodwood 2008, Saturday, August 2.

The ultra-competitive handicap sprint is one of the most valuable contests of its type and has produced numerous Group winners in the past.

Among the entries is last year’s winner Zidane, who could bid to become the first dual winner since Sky Diver landed back-to-back renewals in 1967 and 1968. The James Fanshawe-trained six-year-old returned to action in style this year, snatching victory in the shadow of the post in the Listed Abernant Stakes at Newmarket on April 17, before dropping to five furlongs and finishing fifth in the Group Three Palace House Stakes at the same course in May. Zidane is one of Blue Square’s 14/1 co-favourites in the opening betting show from the sponsor.

Last year Zidane denied 2006 winner Borderlescott a second success in the famous race when gaining the advantage in the final strides but the Robin Bastiman-trained six-year-old could bid to regain his crown on August 2.

Bastiman commented: “I’ve entered Borderlescott up in the Bluesquare.com Stewards’ Cup, so that race is a possibility but I’ll make my mind up nearer the time.

“He’s come out of his Salisbury race in good form, but he’s just got beaten by a better horse. It’s a bit frustrating with him because I can’t win anything other than a handicap and he’s fairly high in the ratings now. When they get out of the handicap stage, there are no easy races.

“He’s only a little horse and he tries his hardest every time. He’s difficult to place but he’s run well in the Stewards’ Cup in the past and it would be nice to win it again. I’m pleased with him.”

Borderlescott is a 20/1 chance with Blue Square while thre other 14/1 co-favourites are the Roger Charlton-trained Genki, King’s Apostle from the William Haggas stable and last month’s York winner Tombi.

The David Nicholls-trained Gift Horse, third in the Prince’s Stand Stakes at Epsom recently, is one of four of the last five previous winners of the Bluesquare.com Stewards’ Cup entered, with 2003 victor Patavellian also engaged.

With two wins in the race already, Nicholls is the joint most successful current trainer in the Bluesquare.com Stewards’ Cup. The North Yorkshire handler has entered a team of 17 in total, most of whom are also entered in the Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot on Saturday.

His large contingent includes Machinist (20/1), successful in the Scurry Handicap at the Curragh in July last year on testing ground, Indian Trail (20/1), sixth in the Scottish Sprint Cup on his most recent start, and Northern Dare (20/1).

The John Gallagher-trained Mac Gille Eoin, winner of that aforementioned six-furlong Epsom contest, is among the entries along with stable companion Pusey Street Lady. The Simon Dow-trained Merlin’s Dancer and the Peter Winkworth-trained Safari Mischief, second and third respectively in the Dash Handicap at Epsom earlier this month, have both been entered.

Abraham Lincoln (20/1), a Group Three runner-up on his most recent start, and Port Of Spain, trained by British and Irish champion trainer Aidan O’Brien, are the two overseas entries.

Last year’s sixth Balthazaar’s Gift (16/1), who won a Listed contest at Windsor on his most recent start, has been entered again by trainer Luca Cumani, while the fourth in that Windsor race, Confuchias, has been engaged by Karl Burke.

The Windsor contest could prove a good guide to the outcome of the Bluesquare.com Stewards’ Cup, as narrow runner-up Lipocco has been given this race as an option by trainer Ralph Beckett, and the third-placed Prime Defender is among three entries from Barry Hills’ yard. Hills’ other two entries are Bonnie Prince Blue and Nacho Libre.

Knot In Wood, the Richard Fahey-trained six-year-old who was third in last year’s Bluesquare.com Stewards’ Cup, is also among the entries, while Richard Hannon could bid for a third success in the Goodwood race with Edge Closer. The four-year-old had Borderlescott and veteran Ashdown Express behind him when winning the Listed Cathedral Stakes at Salisbury on Sunday.

Other notable entries include the John Hills-trained Dark Islander, who was a close second in the German Group Three 37.von Wert Benazet-Rennen at Baden-Baden last month and recent Great Leighs winner Nota Bene from David Elsworth’s yard.

Meanwhile, Atlantic Story, Thebes and Orpsie Boy, from the respective stables of Mick Easterby, Mark Johnson and Nick Littmoden, have all been running well on the all-weather recently.

Bluesquare.com Stewards’ Cup - the sponsors bet: 14 Genki, King’s Apostle, Tombi, Zidane, 16 Al Khaleej, Balthazaar’s Gift, Chief Editor, Express Wish, Knot In Wood, Lipocco, Royal Rock, Valery Borzov, 20 Abraham Lincoln, Atlantic Story, Baby Strange, Barney McGrew, Borderlescott, Buachill Dona, Edge Closer, Everymanforhimself, Good Gorsoon, Harrison George, Hinton Admiral, Hitchens, Indian Trail, Jimmy Styles, Machinist, Mutamared, Northern Dare, Off The Record, Pearly Wey, Prime Defender, Sohraab, Something, Sundae, Tajneed, Utmost Respect, Viking Spirit, 25 bar.

The weights for the Bluesquare.com Stewards’ Cup are revealed on Wednesday, July 2.

George Primarolo, Blue Square’s spokesman, commented: “We are obviously delighted with the entry for this year’s Bluesquare.com Stewards’ Cup which will be the showpiece of our second year of sponsorship at Goodwood.

“Understandably, the first two home last year in Zidane and Borderlescott feature prominently in our betting once again but it could be relatively unexposed sorts in the shape of Genki and King’s Apostle that catch the eye of the punters this time around.”

Glorious Goodwood 2008 takes place over five days, from Tuesday, July 29, to Saturday, August 2, inclusive.

47 STILL IN CONTENTION FOR DARLEY JULY CUP AT NEWMARKET

Europe’s richest sprint, the £400,000 Group One Darley July Cup, has seen 47 acceptors at the forfeit stage on June 17, details of which are announced today.

The tremendous six-furlong contest, run on The July Course at Newmarket on Friday, July 11, the third and final day of the 2008 Ritz Club July Festival, is the third and last British leg of the Global Sprint Challenge for the first time in 2008. The Global Sprint Challenge brings together the best sprinters from around the world.

The first leg of the Global Sprint Challenge was yesterday’s five-furlong King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot where no less than six of the first 10 home remain engaged in the Darley July Cup including Australian superstar sprinter Takeover Target, who is set to make his second appearance in the Newmarket showpiece, having finished a close seventh in 2006.

The five-time Group One-winning performer, second in yesterday’s King’s Stand Stakes, could reoppose the third Fleeting Spirit, who has already shown herself to be a potential superstar with a scintillating victory in the Group Two Temple Stakes at Haydock in May, as well as the fourth home Dandy Man.

Joe Janiak, trainer of nine-year-old Takeover Target, believes his sprinter can do well in the six-furlong Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot on Saturday and is then looking forward to coming to Newmarket for the Darley July Cup.

The Australian said: “If he pulls up well on Saturday, he will go to the July Cup at Newmarket. It’s part of the series and now we know more about the track there than when he was seventh in 2006 - we’ll put more work on him this time.

“Jay (Ford - jockey) is under the impression he’ll get further now that he’s older so a stiff six furlongs shouldn’t be a problem there.”

Benbaun, who took last year’s Group One Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp, is also set to line up in the Darley July Cup having finished seventh at Ascot yesterday, as could the ninth Abraham Lincoln and 10th, last year’s Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes winner Kingsgate Native.

Saturday’s Golden Jubilee Stakes, the second British leg of the Global Sprint Challenge is also likely to provide significant clues for Newmarket, with last year’s Darley July Cup victor Sakhee’s Secret set to do battle with the likes of Zidane, Fat Boy, and Dark Missile as well as Assertive and War Artist, who finished first and second in the Group Two Duke of York Hearthstead Homes Stakes at York last month.

Recent Group Two scorer Marchand d’Or is also engaged to run at Ascot on Saturday and could bid to give Darley July Cup-winning jockey Freddie Head a first victory in the race as a trainer. The two other French-trained entries are Alain de Royer Dupre’s consistent Tiza and the unexposed War Officer, trained by Jean-Claude Rouget.

New Zealand could have their first runner in the Darley July Cup courtesy of the Graeme Sanders-trained Seachange, who will make her European debut at Ascot on Saturday. The seven-time Group One- winning mare has also been engaged in the mile Group One UAE Hydra Properties Falmouth Stakes, the highlight of the opening day of the Ritz Club July Festival, Wednesday, July 9.

There are 12 Irish-trained entries going forward for the Darley July Cup including yesterday’s Queen Anne Stakes winner Haradasun, trained by Aidan O’Brien, who has twice been successful in the Darley July Cup with Stravinsky in 1999 and Mozart in 2001. The champion trainer of Britain and Ireland has 11 engaged including the winner of the stanjamesuk.com 2000 Guineas, Irish 2,000 Guineas and yesterday’s St James’s Palace Henrythenavigator, Irish 2,000 Guineas fourth Jupiter Pluvius, and talented sprinter US Ranger, who is set to contest the Golden Jubilee Stakes beforehand. The Coolmore operation could also be represented by the Tommy Stack-trained Myboycharlie.

Other notable contenders for the great Newmarket sprint include the 2006 Darley July Cup winner Les Arcs, stanjamesuk.com 2000 Guineas fourth and St James’s Palace Stakes runner-up Raven’s Pass along with the unbeaten Winker Watson, who was a course and distance winner on his last start in the Group Two TNT July Stakes at the Ritz Club July Festival last year.

There is a further opportunity for horses to be added to the field for the Darley July Cup on Saturday, July 5, when there is also a £30,000 supplementary entry stage.

HIGH-CLASS UAE HYDRA PROPERTIES FALMOUTH STAKES IN PROSPECT AT NEWMARKET

The £200,000 Group One UAE Hydra Properties Falmouth Stakes, the highlight of the opening day of Newmarket’s Ritz Club July Festival, Wednesday, July 9, has attracted a cracking entry of 35 of the best fillies and mares from across Europe.

Run over a mile of The July Course, the contest was upgraded to Group One status for the first time in 2004 and plenty of this year’s entrants have shown form at the highest level, including English and Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Finsceal Beo, and stanjamesuk.com 1000 Guineas third Saoirse Abu, who both hail from the Jim Bolger stable.

A formidable Irish challenge of seven also includes the Aidan O’Brien-trained Halfway To Heaven, winner of the Irish 1,000 Guineas last month, who could be joined by Ballydoyle stablemates Psalm and Group Two seriousquitters.co.uk Rockfel Stakes scorer Kitty Matcham, while Dermot Weld has engaged Mad About You and Carribean Sunset, who finished a close second and third behind Halfway To Heaven at the Curragh.

The home contingent is headed by stanjamesuk.com 1000 Guineas runner-up Spacious, who could bid to give trainer James Fanshawe a fourth UAE Hydra Properties Falmouth Stakes following the victories of Macadamia (2003) and Soviet Song (2004 & 2005).

Spacious’s owner Cheveley Park Stud could also be represented by Group Three Leslie Harrison Memorial Nell Gwyn Stakes scorer Infallible, who finished two places behind Spacious on The NatWest Rowley Mile, Hip and the five-year-old mare Heaven Sent, who was an easy winner of the Group Three stanjamesuk.com Dahlia Stakes for four-time UAE Hydra Properties Falmouth Stakes-winning trainer Sir Michael Stoute and runs in today’s Windsor Forest Stakes at Ascot

The master of Freemason Lodge has also engaged Visit, whose last start was in the Group One skybet.com Cheveley Park Stakes in October last year.

Mark Johnston has entered stanjamesuk.com 1000 Guineas fifth Nahoodh and she could be joined by her former stablemates, the Mick Channon-trained pair of Nijoom Dubai and the four-year-old Majestic Roi, winner of the Group One Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes.

Notable older fillies entered include the Henry Cecil-trained Group One winner Passage Of Time, Hughie Morrison’s progressive Listed scorer Kasumi and the New Zealand-trained six-year-old Seachange, who could bid to become the oldest winner of the UAE Hydra Properties Falmouth Stakes.

The German entry is the Peter Schiergen-trained Briseida, who was a comprehensive winner of the German 1,000 Guineas at Dusseldorf at the start of June where she beat fellow entry Love Of Dubai. The daughter of Pivotal could bid to become the second German-trained winner of the UAE Hydra Properties Falmouth Stakes following Proudwings’ success in 2001 for Ralf Suerland.

TERRIFIC ENTRY FOR THE PRINCESS OF WALES’S WBX.COM STAKES AT THE JULY FESTIVAL

The £100,000 Group Two Princess Of Wales’s WBX.COM Stakes provides one of the first opportunities for three-year-olds to take on the older generation and an enthralling contest is in store this year with 49 entries, 10 more than in 2007, having been received.

Sir Michael Stoute has a fabulous record in the 12-furlong event, run on day two of the Ritz Club July Festival, Thursday, July 10, and his five entries this year include the impressive 2007 winner Papal Bull, who finished a close fourth on his seasonal reappearance in the Group One Juddmonte Coronation Cup at Epsom earlier this month.

The Newmarket trainer has a tremendous record in the Princess Of Wales’s WBX.COM Stakes, having also saddled to victory Shardari (1986), Rock Hopper (1991), Saddlers’ Hall (1992), Little Rock (2000) and Gamut (2005). His other entries are dual Group Two Hardwicke Stakes scorer Maraahel, unexposed Listed winner Spanish Moon, Galactic Star and Gulf Express.

Mark Johnston, successful three times in the Princess Of Wales’s WBX.COM Stakes in the past 10 years has entered 2006 victor Soapy Danger alongside Hearthstead Maison and the progressive three-year-old pair of Age Of Reason and Captain Webb.

Another three-time winner of the Princess Of Wales’s WBX.COM Stakes, Henry Cecil could this year be represented by the Khalid Abdulla-owned duo of Walking Talking and Tranquil Tiger, who took the Listed Bahrain Stakes at the Ritz Club July Festival last season. Cecil has also entered Multidimensional and the three-year-old Ancient Lights, who was a ready winner on his only start in the Sias Building Services Anniversary Maiden Stakes at Newmarket in May.

A strong Godolphin entry of eight is headed by last year’s Group One Emirates Airline Champion Stakes winner Literato and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe third Sagara. Saeed bin Suroor could also run Boscobel, St Leger fourth Regal Flush, Happy Boy, Al Shemali and Eastern Anthem alongside the three-year-old Campanologist, who won the Listed Tuddenham Mill Feilden Stakes on his seasonal reappearance at the Craven meeting.

John Gosden, successful in the Princess Of Wales’s WBX.COM Stakes with St Leger winner Shantou in 1997, has entered last year’s Doncaster hero Lucarno, who finished a close fourth in this race last year prior to going on to Classic glory, while Michael Jarvis, who used this race as a springboard for Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe success with Carroll House in 1989, has this year engaged Chester Vase runner-up All The Aces.

Aidan O’Brien has entered some of his top middle-distance performers, including multiple Group One winning filly Peeping Fawn and Irish Derby victor Soldier Of Fortune, who began his four-year-old campaign with an impressive display in the Juddmonte Coronation Cup at Epsom.

The champion British and Irish trainer has also engaged dual Ascot Gold Cup hero Yeats, dual Group Two scorer Septimus, Song Of Hiawatha, Red Rock Canyon, Mount Nelson, as well as St Leger third and sixth Honoulu and Macarthur, who could bid to become the first Irish-trained winner of the Princess Of Wales’s WBX.COM Stakes since Desert Team triumphed for Jim Bolger in 1993.
