ROYAL ASCOT 2008
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
FIRST DAY, TUESDAY, JUNE 17
GOING UPDATE
After a drying day, the going at the end of the first day of Royal Ascot is
GOOD TO FIRM, FIRM IN PLACES
Chris Stickels, Ascot’s Clerk of the Course, said: “We are going to water the whole course tonight and put down four millimetres to replace what’s been lost through a drying day. There are around five millimetres of rain forecast after racing on Wednesday.”
CROWD UP
Today’s attendance on the opening day of Royal Ascot was 42,092, compared to 40,214 on the same day last year.
Charles Barnett, Ascot Racecourse’s Chief Executive, commented: “It has been a very pleasing start to Royal Ascot with the crowd up by a healthy total of nearly 2,000 overall.
“What is particularly pleasing today is that there is an increase of 3,000 in General Admission. We actually restricted Royal Enclosure badges and didn’t accept new applicants for the opening day because historically that puts huge pressure on that area.
“Seeing the first Spanish-trained winner of the meeting in our most-international race, the King’s Stand Stakes, was a real highlight as was Takeover Target finishing second, his fifth consecutive run in the first four at Royal Ascot.
“The Face of Ascot competition got off to a good start and was very popular in the public enclosures and we are looking forward to the rest of the week.”
FIRST RACE WINNING QUOTES
QUEEN ANNE STAKES (GROUP 1)
ONE ON BOARD FOR AUSSIES
The Australian-bred and part-owned Haradasun held on in a photo for the opening Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes to earn himself a place at stud in the northern hemisphere.
Coolmore bought 50 per cent interest in the five-year-old after his two Group 1 victories in Australia and he joined Aidan O’Brien’s stable in Ireland late last year with a view to making his mark in Europe.
His previous owners, Sydney-based Frank Tagg and his wife Sally, Frank and Marie Meduri and Garry and Leone Moffitt retain a half share. The three couples have owned McDonald’s restaurant franchises in Sydney and Canberra for 30 years, hence the horse’s yelllow, red and white colours.
“Our goal was to win this race and we achieved that with a great ride from Johnny Murtagh and a great training performance from Aidan O’Brien. The horse is full of heart and really digs deep,” said Tagg.
“We believed so much in the horse and he has done it today. The whole reason he is here is so that he could stand in the northern hemisphere and we will leave it to Aidan to decide what he does now. But his racing career will finish here and he will go to stud in Australia and will shuttle back to Europe..
“Circles Of Gold, his mother, resides at Coolmore at Jerry Plains in Australia and she has been a wonderful mare for us because she also produced Elvstroem, who ran at Royal Ascot when it was at York.”
Trainer Aidan O’Brien added: “There was not much early pace when he ran in the Lockinge and not much pace through the middle of the race so they just sprinted at the end. But we were very happy with him in the Lockinge, obviously with it being his first run for us and he ran a lovely race and was really getting going in the last furlong and a half.
“He’s very natural, this fellow. He came to us in October or November last year and although he took a bit of time to acclimatise, from day one he was always naturally very fast, very quick and a great cruiser. He settles and quickens and you can see why everyone was so excited about him in Australia .
“He’s very courageous. Johnny was very convinced about that and he said that if he got to the front at all he would stay there. He looked like a horse that would get a mile and a quarter today but we entered him in the sprints here later in the week so he’s very versatile.”
Jockey Johnny Murtagh added: “His last race was a little bit messy, they went no pace and he was keen to the start. He was a little bit fresh really but today worked well. Davy (McCabe) did a great job in front, he just moved off the rail and gave me a little slip through. My horse was brave.
“I was a bit surprised with him the last time because he showed so much speed at home but I knew him better today. I knew here today with a stiff mile and plenty of speed on that he’d be hard to beat. He’s very tough and very genuine.
“The Australian horses are real tough. They’re trained hard and ridden hard in Australia. I knew after the Lockinge Stakes that he’d be a lot better today.
“I don’t think Finsceal Beo headed me but it was close for a while. I thought I had the race sown up but the French filly just dived at me towards the line. In fairness, my lad got a little bit tired in the last 50 yards but he’s all heart and he’s got a big engine so I’m delighted to get off to this start.
“The stiff mile here is ideal for him. It’s good fast ground. It’s beautiful ground, exactly what you’d want here - fast ground, fast horses, fast jockeys, going fast and winning the best races!
“I can’t wait to ride Henrythenavigator. Coming here this week, it’s unbelievable the amount of horses I’ve got to ride. Henry is up there in the top - he’s really going well at home, he likes fast ground and I can’t wait to ride him. “
The stewards gave Murtagh a three-day ban for his use of the whip on the winner.
MANNING AND MURTAGH BANNED
Kevin Manning received two separate suspensions totalling five days when riding third-placed Finsceal Beo in the opening Queen Anne Stakes. He was found guilty of careless riding on two occasions and his bans will take place from July 1 to 5.
Johnny Murtagh, who rode the winner Haradasun, was banned for three days - from July 1 to 3 - for using his whip with excessive frequency.
RACE ONE: QUEEN ANNE STAKES

‘NO EXCUSES’: ROYER-DUPRE
Alain Royer-Dupre indicated that the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket (July 9) could come under consideration for Queen Anne Stakes runner-up Darjina.
The Zamindar filly almost beat the boys, producing a thrilling display only to come up short by a head.
The French trainer said: “No excuses, she ran very well and was beaten by a better one on the day.
“She didn’t have a hard race and all being well she may go for the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket.”
The Group 1 at the July Course could be on the agenda for third-placed favourite Finsceal Beo - although her trainer Jim Bolger outlined several possibilities.
He said: “She ran a terrific race. You would have to be pleased with her performance. She has several options - the Pretty Polly at the Curragh, the Falmouth would be a possibility and the Nassau at Goodwood.”
Cheveley Park director Chris Richardson was delighted with fourth-placed Cesare, despite the seven-year-old not enjoying a smooth passage.
He said: “He has a blinder. Maybe he got caught in a pocket and just couldn’t his momentum going until too late. But it was a good performance in a very good race.”
GROUND CONDITIONS FOLLOWING THE FIRST RACE
Johnny Murtagh, successful aboard Haradasun, reported: “It’s good fast ground - beautiful ground.”
David McCabe, who set the pace aboard Honoured Guest, said: “Very fast - it’s very quick ground.”
Sageburg’s jockey Olivier Peslier described the ground as: “Good.”
Seb Sanders, eighth aboard Arabian Gleam, declared: “The ground is quick.”
Jimmy Fortune, Tariq’s jockey, opined: “It’s quick ground.”
Ryan Moore, the rider of Linngari, reported: “It’s fast out there.”
Mount Nelson’s rider Seamus Heffernan said: “It’s fast ground.”
RACE TWO: KING’S STAND STAKES
WIN QUOTES
DREAM RESULT FOR ACHESON
EQUIANO delivered the first Spanish-trained winner at Royal Ascot when scoring at 22/1 in the King’s Stand Stakes.
The Mauricio Delcher-Sanchez-trained three-year-old prevailed by half-a-length in the hands of Olivier Peslier.
It was a dream result for owner James Acheson, for whom this was his first ever runner.
Co.Tyrone-based farmer Acheson said: “We’ve only had him two weeks .
“We have been looking to buy a stallion in the last 18 months and we just spotted this horse through bloodstock agent Brian Grassick - he sources horses for us.
“We thought he had stallion potential. We liked him and thought he was very good looking horse.
“We didn’t think he would win today and can’t quite believe it. The trainer said he had been very happy with him since his last race (second in a Group 2 at Chantilly 16 days earlier) and said he had got even better.
“It’s the first horse I’ve ever had race for me. They are my father Walter’s colours and hadn’t been used in 30 years.
“The last furlong was a bit of a dream. We thought he was going to be overtaken but he basically hammered them.
“The horse is going to Barry Hills tonight. I have an unraced filly with him and another with Michael Bell.”
Acheson is very involved in showjumping and stands showjumping stallions in Ireland. He bought Liscalgot and she won the World Showjumping Championships at Jerez, Spain, in 2002.
Acheson summed up: “We are quite lucky!”
RACE TWO - GROUP ONE KING’S STAND STAKES - PLACE QUOTES
MORE TO COME FROM TAKEOVER TARGET
Australian trainer Joe Janiak believes there is more to come from Takeover Target in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot on Saturday, after the nine-year-old filled the runner-up spot in the five-furlong King’s Stand Stakes.
Takeover Target, winner of the King’s Stand Stakes in 2006 and fourth last year, was unable to overhaul Spanish raider Equiano but pleased his handler in battling on to be beaten half a length under Jay Ford.
Janiak said: “I’m very happy with that. He’s blown up a bit so there should still be some improvement for Saturday in the Golden Jubilee Stakes when the extra furlong will suit him better.
“Judging from what Jay (Ford) said, he had the winner two furlongs out but the winner wouldn’t give in. My fella is older and has just lost a bit of speed over this shorter distance - where he used to go away from them - but he’s hung in and he’s superb. He never runs a bad race.”
The Celtic Swing gelding was third in the 2006 Golden Jubilee Stakes and was just touched off by Soldier’s Tale in the six-furlong contest 12 months ago. Janiak is keen to take in all three British legs of the Global Sprint Challenge, with the Darley July Cup at Newmarket on the agenda after Ascot.
“If he pulls up well on Saturday he will go to the July Cup at Newmarket. It’s part of the series and now we know more about the track there than when he was seventh in 2006 - we’ll put more work on him this time.
“Jay’s under the impression he’ll get further now that he’s older so a stiff six furlongs shouldn’t be a problem there.”
Newmarket trainer Jeremy Noseda believes that beaten 15/8 favourite Fleeting Spirit may have been below par despite finishing a brave third under Ryan Moore, half a length and a neck behind the winner.
Noseda revealed: “I’m happy enough but I don’t think she quite performed to her very best.
“I had a few horses out of sync over the past four or five days and she might have lacked a bit of spark - maybe I’m making excuses.
“She’s run a good brave race but I do think she’s a better filly than that. Time will tell.”
MORE QUOTES FROM THE SECOND RACE - THE KING’S STAND STAKES
Olivier Peslier, the winning rider on Equiano, said: “He ran very well in France and today was a big ambition, but the horse has a lot of speed. He travelled well, but before the race the trainer said it’s better to stay behind and get cover, stay behind the lead. But I said it’s five furlongs and that he has a lot of speed and he’s better with the rail.
“I checked the far side rail but that’s a second race. I rode my race and after the last two furlongs I checked to see what was happening.”
Frankie Dettori, on the fourth Dandy Man who raced on the far side with three others and was beaten by three on the stands’ side, declared: “He has run a super race from the draw. It can’t be helped. When you run with the main group, you tend to run a bit faster.”
Saeed bin Suroor, the trainer of Dandy Man, added: “He ran well to be fourth. Last time he lost a shoe but this time he showed his form. He likes fast ground and five furlongs and we will keep him at this distance. We will see how he comes out of this race before deciding his next target.”
Kevin Shea, who led the four-strong far side group on National Colour who showed blistering pace before weakening to finish sixth, said: “That is how she races. They did not want me to do anything differently today. She just needed the run after 14 months off but the important thing is that she is sound.”
Damien Oliver, the rider of Australian raider Magnus who finished eighth, commented: “He had very chance and ran well. I would have liked to see him run a bit better. He probably felt the ground a little bit - a bit fast for him. That is his last race - he’s off to stud now.”
RACE THREE - GROUP ONE ST JAMES’S PALACE STAKES - WIN QUOTES
O’BRIEN AND MURTAGH HAIL “EXCEPTIONAL” HENRY
Henrythenavigator proved a different class to his rivals in completing an elusive treble in the Group One St James’s Palace Stakes.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt became the first horse since the same trainer’s record-breaking Rock Of Gibraltar in 2002 to add the mile contest to victories in both the English and Irish 2,000 Guineas.
O’Brien enthused: “I find it hard to think that I’ve had a better miler than him. He’s a great horse - exceptional.”
Henrythenavigator was held up at the rear under Johnny Murtagh before weaving through beaten rivals in the straight and quickening to lead above the furlong pole. The Kingmambo colt kept on strongly to repel the challenge of Raven’s Pass by three quarters of a length.
The winning rider said: “He showed a great turn of foot. I dropped my reins and when I got a hold of them again he picked up and went away.
“It opened up nicely for him. The lesser horses weakened and he had the class to take the gaps He knows he’s the best horse now and he trains like he’s the best. He’s an exceptionally good horse.
“He’s a very professional, class horse. Aidan always said he was the best two-year-old last year.”
O’Brien is happy to keep Henrytrhenavigator at a mile after the colt set a new track record of 1m 38.70s on his favoured fast surface, but has not ruled out a step up in trip.
He said “I’m delighted. He’s a really special horse, this fellow. He has speed, stamina, class, pick up and a great attitude. He’s a very unique horse.
“Johnny was telling us all of the time after the English Guineas what would happen in the Irish Guineas. He’s been riding him in all of his work and he was saying what was going to happen today. Obviously, Johnny rode him with that confidence and it’s unbelievable.
“All things are open to him. After every race, when we go home and see how the horse is, everyone sits down and talks about the route he can go. I think he can go a lot of different routes this horse. They’re all open to him.
“You could drop him back, you could step him up in trip, you could leave him at a mile. It’s a great decision to have to make. He’s a very neat horse and we know he loves it at a mile. Every horse isn’t the same every day but in the vein of form that he’s in at present, he’s an unbelievable racehorse.
“We always take it one race at a time. We all know how hard it is to get to a race so we will sit down and talk about the options. His full-sister was placed in an Oaks so he has a lot of options.
“We’ll be keeping him to good ground. We know he’s so good on it - he’s special.
“The ground in Ireland last year was winter National Hunt ground. We hadn’t seen anything like it. We knew he wanted it fast and so although he was beaten twice he wasn’t beaten far in those races and that was down to his class.”
THIRD RACE PLACED QUOTES
ST JAMES’S PALACE STAKES (GROUP 1)
RAVEN’S HAS BREEDERS’ AIM
Trainer John Gosden was delighted with the effort of Raven’s Pass to finish within three-quarters of a length of Henrythenavigator in a brilliant renewal of the St James’s Palace Stakes.
“That was a proper run and we nearly frightened the winner,” said Gosden. “The Guineas was a mess for him but he was back to his best here and ran a blinder.
“We know now he stays a mile and this was definitely the race to go for, not the Jersey. The owners (Robert and Janice Macnair’s Stonerside Stables and Sheikh Mohammed) both want to run in the Breeders’ Cup Mile so we will have that at the end of our programme.”
Twice Over was a further two and a half lengths back in third and his trainer Henry Cecil said: “They broke the track record and you would have to be pleased, he ran a great race. It was a bit too fast for him, he would prefer some give and I think he’s more a mile and a quarter horse than a miler. He went on the ground today but it is not his going.
“We run Phoenix Tower tomorrow (in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes) and he will like the faster ground. I think he has a good chance so we will see what happens with him before deciding what to do with this fellow. In races like the Eclipse I do think four-year-olds have an advantage at that time of year.”
Twice Over’s jockey Ted Durcan said: “He ran an excellent race and there are no excuses. It was a properly-run mile race and everything worked out okay - he had a split. He has run very well.”
Cat Junior defied his 66/1 starting price to finish a good fourth and his trainer Brian Meehan said: “We’ve always thought the world of him and I’m very pleased with that. I don’t know what happened last time when he ran at Newmarket but we were vindicated in running here.
“There are no initial plans for him, we took a view with all the (David) Sullivan-owned horses this year that we would supplement them for big races if they needed an entry, otherwise it gets out of hand. There are plenty of options.”
Olivier Peslier, rider of French 2,000 Guineas hero Falco, who was fifth today, said: “He ran okay. He travelled easily on the bridle, was coming well but only continued on the same pace.”
The Michael Bell-trained Connoisseur maintained his unbeaten record in style when running away with the Group 2 Coventry Stakes by two and a quarter lengths in the colours of London art dealer Richard Green.
“He’d only done two or three bits of work since he won at Newmarket in April, we deliberately kept him for Ascot,” said Bell, who owns a quarter share in the winner with Green.
“We were thinking of going for the Norfolk but after Jamie worked him at the weekend we decided to go for the Coventry, the bigger race. They are both Group 2s but the Coventry has always been the stallion-making race.
“We’ll have to think about going for a Group 1 now, he’s not in the Phoenix Stakes in Ireland but he can be supplemented, that’s not an issue because the prize money is in the kitty now. The Prix Morny is another option and I would like to step him up to seven furlongs at some stage this year, maybe looking ahead we could finish off his year in the Dewhurst. He’s got to prove that he stays another furlong before we can think about the 2000 Guineas
“He’s a very smart horse and when Jamie sat on him he said this horse could win the Coventry . I didn’t think he would win it that well though and he’s won very well.
“I obviously had Motivator but I have not had a two-year-old as speedy as this one. Pretty much every smart two-year-old turned up but he stopped them in their tracks.”
Jockey Jamie Spencer added: “He’s a decent colt. He did everything right on easy ground and we knew he would improve a lot for faster conditions. It was a bold shout from the boss not to run from the time of the Craven meeting to now. I honestly hadn’t clapped eyes on him until the weekend and he’s really matured.
“He’s like the really good ones because it wasn’t that he was ready to run, it was just he was so much better than the rest of the string, he shone out from the rest of them and that‘s why he ran so early. It was a good call by everybody to run in this race and it’s great for the owners and trainer.
“Frankie was going very well in front of me so I didn’t want to let him to kick before me and so I pre-empted him and kicked first and I ended up getting to the front probably a little bit earlier than I wanted to but he’s a professional, he’s had two runs and you know he wasn’t going to pull up in front. Hopefully, it’s not the end for this horse. He was so much better than the rest of them today.”
Art Connoiseur was quoted at just 16/1 with Cashmans and Blue Square for next year’s 2000 Guineas.
RACE FOUR: COVENTRY STAKES
PLACE QUOTES
INTENSE FOCUS PLEASES BOLGER
Jim Bolger was happy after Intense Focus chased home Art Connoisseur in the Coventry Stakes.
He said: “He has run a fine race. You would prefer good ground, at least for the two year olds, but you have to take it as it comes and he handled good to firm well.
“He is a horse with a future. On his pedigree, he should stay 10 furlongs and maybe even a step further.
“He is very genuine with a marvellous temperament. He will probably go for the Railway Stakes in two weeks’ time.”
Karl Burke, trainer of third-placed Lord Shanakill, is another who feels he has a horse with a big future on his hands.
He said: “He can do nothing but improve. You are not going to see the best of this horse until later in the year or when he is a three-year-old. We are not in any rush with him and there is no real plan at this stage, although I think we may stay at six furlongs for his next run.
“This was a huge run. I was confident that the horse was in great form and had come on a huge amount from York. But he has just come up behind in the last two or three weeks.
“One and a half furlongs out I thought we were home. But the winner had a better turn of foot than us.”
Jeremy Noseda, trainer of fourth-placed Himalya, said: “I am satisfied with his performance. The ground was no problem.”
RACE FIVE: THE ASCOT STAKES (Handicap)
WIN QUOTES
SMITH NAILS FIRST ROYAL ASCOT WINNER
Missoula triggered arguably the biggest roar around the winner’s enclosure when returning from her success in the Ascot Stakes.
The five-year-old mare prevailed in a four-way photo-finish from Mamlook, Liberate and Bukit Tinggi to give trainer Suzy Smith her first-ever Flat winner, never mind Royal Ascot triumph.
Smith, 31, who trains a predominantly jumping string, said: “It’s just marvellous as we are only a small yard and hardly ever have any Flat horses. I expect we will have more Flat horses now but we are still going to be a jumping yard.
“I did think she had a bit of a chance but you never come here thinking that you are going to win.
“I felt she could get in the frame as she ran a good race at Haydock last time, while her run at Chester before that can be discounted as she was in season.
“I’m sure we will be celebrating later on - the owners are absolutely delighted. It is just brilliant.”
Missoula, formerly trained by Mark Tompkins, was bought at las year’s Tattersalls Horses In Training for 110,000 guineas.
RACE FIVE - ASCOT STAKES
PLACE QUOTES
Grand National winning trainer David Pipe came agonisingly close to securing his first Flat winner on the biggest stage but had to settle for second in a thrilling finish to the Ascot Stakes.
The trainer’s Mamlook, successful in a two-mile hurdle at Ascot in April, came late and wide under Ryan Moore but was unable to master Missoula who took the spoils by a head.
Pipe said: “He’s run a blinder and Ryan gave him a great ride. He had to be ridden to get the trip as he’s not bred to stay that distance but he got it well. Willie Carson said that if he stayed two miles over hurdles here then he would stay two and a half miles.
“I thought he had got his head in front but the other horse just came back, perhaps. Everyone is delighted with him - it’s superb.”
Fellow National Hunt trainer Philip Hobbs was pleased with the effort of third-placed Liberate, who went down by a head and a short-head in a four-way photo.
The five-year-old, a three-mile winner over hurdles last month, led the field down the home straight under Jamie Spencer. Having been headed approaching the distance the Lomitas gelding battled gamely to the line.
Hobbs declared: “I’m very pleased, he ran a very good race. Maybe a stronger gallop would have suited as we know he stays.
“He’s tough and when they came past him he ran again so we have to be pleased with that.”
ROBINSON BANNED
Jockey Philip Robinson picked up a two-day suspension for careless riding aboard fourth-placed Bukit Tinggi in the Ascot Stakes. The ban takes place on July 1 and 2.
RACE SIX - LISTED WINDSOR CASTLE STAKES - WIN QUOTES
BEST TAKES FIRST AND THIRD IN 100/1 SHOCK
John Best captured his first Royal Ascot victory with 100/1 shot Flashmans Papers and saw his Mullionmileanhour clinch third for good measure.
The Maidstone trainer said: “That was just unbelievable - I’m delighted. We’ve gone close the last two years and to win is what it’s all about. To have third as well is amazing. They both ran great.”
Flashmans Papers broke his maiden in style as he sprinted from last to first with a searing stands side run under Steve Drowne that saw him sweep to a half-length victory over 4/1 favourite Bushranger, with stablemate Mullionmileanhour a further length and a quarter back in third.
With Mullionmileanhour a 16/1 shot and the stable first string, Flashmans Papers was almost left at home in his box.
Best revealed: “We weren’t sure whether to run him as everyone said Mullionmileanhour was better. I told everyone in the yard he wasn’t a no-hoper. I thought he wasn’t getting home over five furlongs so decided to back off and give him time to strengthen. It seems to have worked.”
Flashmans Paper, the first 100/1 winner at Royal Ascot since Fox Chapel shocked punters in the 1990 Britannia Handicap, is the first Listed winner for his sire, the champion Australian sprinter, Exceed And Excel.
Best could bid for a quick follow-up with the winner, who is likely to line up in Thursday’s Group Two Norfolk Stakes over the course and distance.
He said: “He will probably run in the Norfolk Stakes. He’s declared and he seems to have taken that well. He’s a sound horse and if the owners are happy we’ll do it.”
Of Mullionmileanhour, the trainer revealed: “I think we had to fancy him more, purely on what he’d done already. He’s finished third and we also have the winner so I can’t be disappointed with that. I think perhaps he may want another furlong.”
RACE SIX: THE WINDSOR CASTLE STAKES
PLACE QUOTES
BUSHRANGER IS PHOENIX STAKES POSSIBLE
BUSHRANGER, the 4/1 favourite, found one too good in the Windsor Castle Stakes but his trainer David Wachman still has lofty aspirations for him.
The speedy Danetime colt could be seen next in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh on July 27.
Wachman said: “He ran a good race here. He had to race for a long time in the middle on his own. He is inexperienced - this was only his second start. I would say he would probably go for the Phoenix Stakes next.”
Jockey Liam Keniry feels his mount Mullionmileanhour is going the right way, having finished third off the back of his Kempton maiden win.
Keniry said: “The speed was on the other side and that didn’t help. But he has run a good sound race. It’s a big step up from his win last time.”
Mark Johnston, trainer of fourth-placed Effort, said: “He deserved to be here, although he may have been more comfortable over six furlongs. But we had two runners in the Coventry so we thought we’d spread them around and bring him here.
“He is a very late foal and has done very well for his age. We will give him a month or six weeks and he may run in the Richmond Stakes.”

ROYAL ASCOT 2008
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
FIRST DAY, TUESDAY, JUNE 17
GOING NEWS
The ground on the first day of Royal Ascot is
GOOD TO FIRM
The Going Stick reading is 11.5 on the Straight Course, 8.9 on the Round Course and 10.0 overall.
Chris Stickels, Ascot’s Clerk of the Course, said: “We had a dry night and the ground is in perfect condition ahead of today.
“The forecast is for it to remain dry overnight with possible showers on Wednesday night going into Thursday.”
A temporary rail will be positioned three metres outside the original running line, from Swinley Bottom to the intersection with straight course for the first three days of Royal Ascot. This rail will be removed to provide fresh ground for Friday and Saturday.
BETTING NEWS AT 12.30PM
Bookmakers have seen a broad spread of business for the first day of Royal Ascot with dual Classic winnner Finsceal Beo well backed in the opening Queen Anne Stakes (2.30pm). Jim Bolger’s charge is 7/1 from 8/1 with Skybet and VCBet, 13/2 from 7/1 with Boylesports and 11/2 from 13/2 with Cashmans.
In the same race, Darjina is 5/1 from 6/1 with Blue Square and VCBet as well as 11/2 from 6/1 with Stan James. Meanwhile, Arabian Gleam is 20/1 from 25/1 with Blue Square.
Fleeting Spirit is a hot favourite for the King’s Stand Stakes (3.05pm) but Dublin firm Paddy Power are holding her price at 9/4. Tony Coleman, spokesman for Paddy Power, added: “We have been filled in at 9/4 on Fleeting Spirit but we are happy to take her on and will hold the price until at least 1pm. It would be far and away our worst result today.”
The filly is 9/4 from 2/1 with Coral and William Hill, 9/4 to 15/8 with Boylesports, and 15/8 from 2/1 with Stan James.
Takeover Target is 11/2 from 6/1 with Boylesports in the same race while Blue Square have pruned Kingsgate Native into 13/2 from 8/1 and Dandy Man from 12/1 to 11/1. Hills have also snipped Kingsgate Native from 8/1 to 7/1
In the St James’s Palace Stakes (3.45pm), Raven’s Pass is 7/1 from 8/1 with Blue Square, Falco is 5/1 from 6/1 with VCBet although there has only been limited support for the favourite Henrythenavigator. Coral’s Simon Clare said: “We are top-priced Henrythenavigator at 4/6 but there has been surprisingly little support for the dual Guineas winner.”
The Karl Burke-trained Lord Shanakill has been pruned in the Coventry Stakes (4.20pm), trading at 12/1 from 14/1with Blue Square and Boylesports, who have also trimmed Orizaba to 3/1 from 7/2.
In the Ascot Stakes (4.55pm), Mamlook is 9/1 from 10/1 with VCBet, while Boylesports go 7/2 (from 4/1) Bukit Tinggi and 28/1 (from 50/1) about Legend Erry. Skybet have trimmed Tears Of A Clown into 22/1 from 33/1 while Missoula is 20/1 from 25/1.

PRINCE OF WALES’S STAKES PREVIEW
‘SIXTIES ICON HAS SOLID CHANCE' - NOSEDA
Trainer Jeremy Noseda has given an upbeat bulletin about Sixties Icon's chance in Wednesday’s Prince Of Wales's Stakes over 10 furlongs.
The five-year-old proved disappointing last summer after making a successful reappearance in the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket.
But Noseda's charge has shown that he is very much on the comeback trail, finishing second to Getaway in this year's renewal of the Jockey Club Stakes and then winning a 1m 2f Listed race at Goodwood last month.
Connections' initial thoughts after that five-length triumph were to head to this Friday's Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes over 12 furlongs.
But a rethink means that the 2006 St Leger winner Sixties Icon is ready to prove that he is worthy of his place in Group 1 company once more.
Noseda said: "Sixties Icon will take his place in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes. We've decided to be a little bit brave.
"I just feel that he is in as good form as we've ever had him. We were happy with his last start and he isn't short of pace. I definitely think he will be in the frame - he has got a solid chance."
Among his 12 rivals will be Phoenix Tower, who first tasted defeat in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes after four straight wins.
He was third at Newbury but probably suffered from the lack of early tempo that day.
His trainer Henry Cecil said: "Phoenix Tower may have been an unlucky loser in the Lockinge as there was no pace in the first few furlongs and he is really a horse who needs a mile-and-a-quarter."
The Aidan O'Brien-trained Duke Of Marmalade is sure to go off favourite after winning two Group 1s, the Prix Ganay and the Tattersalls Gold Cup, already this season.
Pressing, from Michael Jarvis's Newmarket yard, is another with strong claims, having gone down by only a head to Saddex in the Premio Presidente della Repubblica at Rome. Ask comes into the race with winning form, having taken the Group 3 Gordon Richards Stakes last time out ahead of Hattan, who reopposes.
Last year's Cambridgeshire winner Pipedreamer bids to show that he is Group 1 class, while the rest of the field is comprised of Literato, Loup Breton, Red Rock Canyon, Stotsfold, Regime and Petara Bay.

RIO DE LA PLATA OUT OF ST JAMES’S PALACE STAKES
DETTORI SWITCHES TO ALEXANDROS
Rio De La Plata will not take his place in this afternoon’s St James’s Palace Stakes.
The Godolphin colt was withdrawn this morning after the going was confirmed as good to firm for today’s racing.
He was due to be ridden by Frankie Dettori, who has switched to fellow Godolphin horse Alexandros.
TOTESWINGER LAUNCHES AT ROYAL ASCOT
TOTESWINGER launches today at Royal Ascot and is the first new tote bet since the scoop6 was unveiled in 1999.
David Craven, totepool Managing Director said: “We believe toteswinger will have a wide appeal from novices, who are just looking for a flutter that offers a good chance of a return, through to the experienced bettors who may be taking a view in a particular race.”
“The swinger bet is popular overseas, most notably in South Africa, and this will also allow us to co-mingle with our international partners which will help liquidity from launch.”
The bet, which is available on races of six or more runners, asks players to pick two horses to finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd in any order. The bet then declares three dividends, 1st and 2nd, 1st and 3rd and 2nd and 3rd.
Spokesman Damian Walker said: “Feedback from our market research suggests this will prove to be a popular bet. Wednesday'’s Royal Hunt Cup ought to be an ideal race for the toteswinger. Bankable is an extremely short-priced favourite and customers may want to use that horse as their “banker” and perm outsiders with him.
“Alternatively, they may consider Bankable to be a ridiculously short price in such a competitive handicap and leave the favourite out altogether, hoping for big dividends.”
The toteswinger will be available daily at every race meeting on every racecourse in the UK. Customers will also be able to place bets through all totesport shops, telephone and internet. The bet will also be available in William Hill betting shops as well as online partners including Coral, Betfair, and Bet365. Coral betting shops and Blue Square will also be joining shortly after launch
The toteswinger will have a deduction rate of 26% which will now also be the deduction rate for the toteexacta and totetrifecta (from 24% and 29% respectively.)
Global Trifectas will be available on all three Group 1s today, Tuesday, the Prince of Wales’s Stakes on Wednesday, Thursday’s Ascot Gold Cup, the Coronation Stakes on Friday and the Golden Jubilee Stakes on Saturday.
TOTESWINGER BACKGROUND
What is toteswinger?
This is a single-race exotic bet available on all races of 6 or more runners at every meeting, every day, players have to pick two horses to finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd in any order.
Each bet offers three chances to win as follows:
" Correctly picking the horses that finish first and second in any order
" Correctly picking the horses that finish first and third in any order
" Correctly picking the horses that finish second and third in any order
A different dividend is declared for each outcome
The minimum unit stake for a toteswinger bet is 10p (shops and online). Minimum unit stake on-course is 50p with minimum total spend £2 as per all totepool on-course bets. Toteswinger is unique to the tote - there is no other equivalent fixed odds or SP bet.
This is an extremely popular bet in overseas racing markets, particularly South Africa where it accounts for 40% of pool turnover. Overseas partners will be able to bet into UK pools, thus providing additional liquidity for launching the new bet in the domestic market.
Where can a toteswinger bet be placed?
As well as in totesport shops, customers can also place a toteswinger bet on-course at all 60 UK racecourses and through selected tote direct partners.

BANKABLE MUST OVERCOME POOR RECORD FOR JOLLIES IN ROYAL HUNT CUP
Ante-post followers of Bankable, who is generally offered at 7/4 in tomorrow’s big handicap, the Royal Hunt Cup (4.20pm), won’t be encouraged by the fact that favourites have a terrible record in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot, with only four scoring since the famous mile handicap resumed towards the end of the second World War in July, 1945.
The Luca Cumani-trained dual course and distance winner, successful in four of his five starts, looks set to start the shortest-priced favourite within that period, with Queensborough II currently holding the record for being the shortest-priced market leader at 2/1 in 1970.
However, the four-year-old could only finish seventh, having been prominent for most of the mile trip before weakening with more than two furlongs left to race.
The most recent winning favourite came in 1996, when the William Haggas-trained front-running Yeast landed the spoils by two and a half lengths under Kieren Fallon at 8/1. Before that four-year-old, the previous successful favourite was in 1989. On that occasion, Jeremy Tree saddled Khalid Abdulla’s 5/1 chance True Panache to score by a length under Pat Eddery.
In 1976, the Noel Murless-trained Jumping Hill started the 6/1 joint-favourite with Yamadori. Victory went to the Lester Piggott-ridden first-named, who took up the running after three furlongs to come home four lengths clear, with his market rival filling third place.
The only other winning favourite since 1945 was Queen Elizabeth II’s Alexander, who started a 13/2 chance in 1956. Trained by Cecil Boyd-Rochfort and ridden by Harry Carr, the four-year-old led inside the final furlong to win by half a length.
Three years later in 1959, the Queen’s Pall Mall, who had won the 1958 2,000 Guineas, started the 5/2 favourite but went down by a length and a half behind Faultless Speech.
In recent years, the majority of the winners have started at odds in double figures, while short-priced favourites have been turned over. In 2001, a gamble went astray on the Sir Michael Stoute-trained 3/1 favourite Tough Speed, who finished ninth under Fallon. It was a similar story for the same trainer/jockey combination two years later when Funfair finished one place closer at 4/1.
Since the race was first run in 1843, there have only been a few other winners returned at prohibitive odds, including two at 3/1, Bishop Romford’s Cob (1844) and Victor (1863). Other short-priced winners include 100/30 chances See Saw (1869), Thuringian Prince (1875) and Peter (1881), along with 7/2 winners Ephesus (1852), Hesperithusa (1858) and Quarrel (1896).
