DETTORI CHASING SUCCESS ON ANNIVERSARY EVENING....FA CUP COMES TO GOODWOOD

The Frankie Dettori 21st Anniversary and Black Tie Picnic fixture at Goodwood has attracted strong entries for this Friday, June 13. The evening meeting honours one of the best jockeys in the world, who rode his first British winner at Goodwood on June 9, 1987.

That first victory came on Lizzy Hare for trainer Luca Cumani in the Birdless Grove Fillies’ Handicap, when the young Italian defeated no less a trio than Willie Carson, Pat Eddery and his hero Steve Cauthen.

Dettori already has rides lined up for a couple of the races during the evening, which he is looking forward to, and is hoping to have at least four rides in total on the six-race card.

The second race on the card is the £5,000 Frankie’s 21st Anniversary Maiden Stakes (6.50pm) over a mile. Godolphin, Dettori’s retained owner, has three entries in the contest - newcomer Ibn Qutaiba, Desert Chill and Siyabona.

Also among the 24 entries is the John Gosden-trained quartet of Expresso Star, Aboriginie, Mohathab and Robert Burns, while the Jeremy Noseda-trained colt Liberation Spirit will be trying to go one better than his two second place finishes last month.

The final race on the card, named after Dettori’s initial winner, is the £7,000 Lizzy Hare Handicap (9.05pm), a six-furlong contest for three-year-olds rated 0-85.

Dettori hasn’t been confirmed to ride in the race as of yet, but among the 26 entries is the Sylvester Kirk-trained Tattenham Stakes fourth Opera Prince, while Michael Bell has entered recent Ripon winner Great Charm.

The action gets underway with the £15,000 EBF Southern Daily Echo Fillies’ Handicap at 6.20pm. The six-furlong race has attracted 20 entries, including Ed Dunlop’s dual winner this season Temple Of Thebes.

The Kirk-trained course winner Our Faye, who was a good second in the Prince’s Stand Stakes at Epsom on Saturday, is engaged, while the father and son team of Gary and Ryan Moore could team up with Nice To Know.

Ray Cochrane, Dettori’s agent, was reluctant to disclose which of the 20 entrants Dettori would ride. He said: “He has the choice of two good rides in the first race, but I wouldn’t like to say which ones until he’s confirmed.”

The card also features the £10,000 Crimbourne Stud Handicap (8.00pm), for which 36 entries have been received. Cochrane revealed today that the jockey will partner Ellemuji for Dean Ivory.

The agent said: “Frankie has a nice ride in this race, Ellemuji. He ran a good third at Sandown recently and should run well again at Goodwood on Friday.”

Among his rivals in the extended nine-furlong race could be the Gary Moore-trained Mcconnell, who landed the Alan Ball Memorial Stakes at Goodwood over nine furlongs on May 21.

Other recent winners in the possible line-up include the William Haggas-trained Storyland, the Kirk-trained Moment’s Notice, the Hughie Morrison-trained Stow and Reclamation from the Sir Mark Prescott stable.

The six-race card also includes the £5,000 Black Tie Picnic Maiden Handicap (8.35pm) over a mile and six furlongs which has attracted 30 entries including the Andrew Balding-trained Victoria Montoya.

The well-bred daughter of High Chaparral was a good third on her most recent start at Newmarket in mid-May, while another runner with good recent form is Dolly Penrose, trained by Mick Channon.

The £7,000 Cheviot Asset Management Handicap (7.25pm) over seven furlongs completes the card. Trainer Mark Wallace has booked joint champion jockey Jamie Spencer to ride Manchurian, who was a good third at Haydock towards the end of last month.

Other entries of note in that handicap include the Terry Mills-trained Golden Desert, the John Akehurst-trained recent all-weather winner Glencalvie and the Stef Liddiard-trained Councellor, while Carl Llewellyn has entered Brighton winner Steig.

Further excitement is added to the evening with the eagerly anticipated annual Black Tie Picnic on the Oak Tree Lawn, where racegoers can dine in relaxed elegance amid possibly the most scenic racecourse in the world. A table for four costs £299, plus the cost of Richmond Enclosure badges.

If that is not enough, racegoers will also have the chance to see the FA Cup first hand. The magnificent trophy, won by Portsmouth FC at Wembley last month with a 1-0 victory over Cardiff, will be paraded in both the Winner’s Enclosure and the Sussex County Rooms.

Admission prices: Richmond Enclosure £27; Gordon Enclosure £19 (50% discount for NUS card holders); FREE parking available; All accompanied children under 17 FREE.

Gates open at 4.30pm for all the evening fixtures.

Frankie Dettori
Born in Milan on December 15, 1970, the son of Gianfranco, a multiple champion jockey in Italy, Frankie Dettori arrived from his homeland to join Luca Cumani's Newmarket yard as an apprentice in July, 1985. His first success came on Rif at Turin, Italy, on November 16, 1986, and he rode his first British winner on Lizzy Hare at Goodwood on June 9, 1987. He was champion British apprentice in 1989 and passed 100 winners for the first time in 1990 when recording 141 successes. He has since captured the hearts of racegoers with his flamboyant style, phenomenal riding successes, and charisma in and out of the saddle. Champion jockey in 1994, 1995 and 2004, Dettori created history when riding all seven winners on the first-day card at the Ascot Festival in September, 1996. His ground-breaking exertions brought recognition beyond racing's own sphere when he was voted into third place in the 1996 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards and was a team captain on ‘A Question Of Sport'. He finally captured the Vodafone Derby in 2007 aboard Authorized and he has tasted success in all four other domestic Classics at least once (with 12 Classic wins in total), as well as a host of high-profile international successes, including the 1995, 2001 and 2002 Arcs on Lammtarra, Sakhee and Marienbard respectively, the Japan Cup on Singspiel in 1996, Falbrav in 2002 and Alkaased in 2005, the Dubai World Cup on Dubai Millennium (2000), Moon Ballad (2003) and Electrocutionist (2006) and the Breeders' Cup Turf on Daylami in 1999, Fantastic Light in 2001 and Red Rocks in 2006. Dettori, who is retained by the Godolphin team, survived an horrific plane crash at Newmarket in 2000 in which the pilot was killed. He is married to Catherine with five children, and his autobiography came out in 2004.
