ROYAL ASCOT 2007
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
FOURTH DAY, FRIDAY, JUNE 22

GROUND

The going was changed after today’s second race to GOOD TO SOFT, SOFT IN PLACES on the Round Course and GOOD TO SOFT on the Straight Course and remains this at the end of racing.

Clerk of the Course Chris Stickels said: “The weather forecast predicts that it should be fairly dry tonight with possible showers tomorrow.”

CROWD

Today’s attendance was 63,364 compared to 71,341 on the same day last year.

TOTE FIGURES

Today’s totesport on-course cash turnover was £1,852,514, down 2.6 per cent on the 2006 figure of £1,914,888.

Tote spokesman Damian Walker said: “Although our figures are down they are ahead of the fall in attendance which is very encouraging.”

MAGNUS AND TARGET CONNECTIONS LOOK FORWARD TO REMATCH WITH ANDRETTI - DRAYTON REVERTS TO SPRINTING

Trainer Peter Moody is delighted with the seemingly plum 19 draw given to Magnus, one of three Australian-trained contenders in Saturday’s Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes.

Magnus finished third to compatriot Miss Andretti in Tuesday’s King’s Stand Stakes and - along with Takeover Target, who came fourth in that contest - he completes a powerful Australian raiding party for the fourth leg of the Global Sprint Challenge.

“He’s in grand shape and appears to have come through the run very well,” said Moody. “I’ll be very interested to watch the form of the races today but, on the back of what we saw on Tuesday, we’d have to be happy with the draw. I don’t have any worries about going over six furlongs as he’s won a Group 1 over five and a half.”

Joe Janiak, trainer of last year’s King’s Stand Stakes winner Takeover Target, is also hoping for a bold run.

"Everything is good. The run didn't knock him around too much. He is having an easy week. The six furlongs will suit him better. They just went too quick for him early on the other day. Now he is older, he has lost a little bit of that early speed so the extra distance will suit him. I wouldn't be worried about ground and the 10 draw is fine,” said Janiak.

Underlining the cosmopolitan nature of the Golden Jubilee Stakes, Drayton - reverting to sprinting after apparently not staying the mile trip in the 2000 Guineas - will be sent out by top South African trainer Mike de Kock from another seemingly decent draw in 20.

“We were disappointed with the run in the Guineas because he didn’t race like we wanted - he raced very keen when he had hoped he would drop back and relax. Weichong came back and said straight away to drop back to sprinting. But he came out of the Guineas well and is looking good and going well at home,” said Trevor Brown, de Kock’s assistant.

Wayne Lordan, who rode the three-year-old when trained by Tommy Stack in Ireland, will be in the saddle tomorrow.

“We’ve put up a chap that knows the horse and it’s hard to judge how he’ll get on against the Australians. You can’t fault Drayton’s form in Ireland last year against Holy Roman Emperor and it wasn’t a bad run for us in Dubai when he needed the race and ran wide.

“We’ll find out tomorrow how good he is and if he finishes in the first three then we’ll have a think about the rest of the Global Sprint Challenge.”

Richard Hannon leads a three-pronged home challenge against the Australian raiders. Abernant Stakes first and second Asset and Assertive will break from stalls 12 and 14 respectively, while Presto Shinko has been drawn nine.

Marlborough trainer Hannon said: "Asset and Assertive are perfectly drawn and they've both got good chances. Asset is obviously a very good horse and Assertive was second to him at Newmarket so he is entitled to be there or thereabouts. Assertive goes on anything - he is very capable. Asset won't mind the ground at all. Presto Shinko would like a bit of rain."

Trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam is double-handed with Al Qasi and Hamoody, while Soldier's Tale represents Jeremy Noseda's yard. Kevin Ryan is hoping his charge Amadeus Wolf can follow up after his Group Two Duke Of York Stakes victory at York last month. Ryan will also saddle Wi Dud.

Red Clubs, second to Amadeus Wolf on the Knavesmire, is Lambourn trainer Barry Hills' runner. The field is completed by Appalachian Trail, Baltic King, Borderlescott, Bygone Days, Quito, Rising Shadow, Firenze, Fayr Jag and Mastership.

RYAN PLAYING ON FRONT FOOT TO REPEL AUSSIE SPEEDBALLS

Kevin Ryan is looking forward to taking on Miss Andretti, who was so impressive in landing Tuesday’s King’s Stand Stakes, with Amadeus Wolf, who kept on strongly to land the Group Two Duke Of York Stakes at York on his seasonal bow last month, in tomorrow’s feature Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes.

The Thirsk trainer’s charge, the mount of Neil Callan, is second favourite behind his Australian-trained rival and available at a best-priced 9/1 with Coral.

Ryan said: “Amadeus Wolf is in great form and it was a great performance at York and he is bound to have come on for it.

“He ran a great race when fifth [behind Les Arcs] in the Golden Jubilee Stakes last year and he is a year older and that much stronger.”

The handler acknowledges the difficulty of his representative’s task, especially as Miss Andretti has now won the first three legs of the 2007 Global Sprint Challenge, but always knew that Amadeus Wolf would be a top four-year-old.

“Miss Andretti was very impressive in the King’s Stand and we are taking on the best and it will be about who is best on the day,” he continued.

“It is always very hard for the three-year-old sprinters and he is better this year.”

Ryan also runs Wi Dud, who will be ridden by Mick Kinane, in the Golden Jubilee. The Elnadim colt also ran well on his seasonal bow, coming home around five lengths adrift of Sierra Vista in the Group Two Temple Stakes at Sandown on the last day of May.

“He ran very well at Sandown but is in the same position as Amadeus Wolf last year in that he is only a three-year-old,” he explained. “But he is a very good horse and is in great form and takes his chance.”

The trainer, who saddled his first Royal Meeting winner last year in the Buckingham Palace Handicap, also runs Mutamared, also ridden by Callan, in tomorrow’s Wokingham Stakes.

The seven-year-old put in his best effort of the campaign on his last start when only finding Beaver Patrol three-quarters of a length too powerful in a Newmarket handicap on May 5.

Ryan added: “I’m a bit concerned about the ground as he is a horse for which the quicker the ground the better and I don’t want any more rain. It was a good run at Newmarket on paper.”

FIRST RACE WINNING QUOTES
ALBANY STAKES (GROUP 3)

NIJOOM SPRINGS 50/1 SURPRISE

The Mick Channon-trained Nijoom Dubai broke her maiden in style when springing a 50/1 shock when landing the opening Albany Stakes under Jamie Spencer by a length and a quarter from 7/4 favourite You’resothrilling.

“I was quite optimistic that we wouldn’t be far away but I wasn’t sure that we’d win,” said Channon.

“She was probably our best early two-year-old and we were delighted with her first run but the wheels fell off next time at Folkestone.

“We all backed her that day but the race ended up a total mess and there were reasons that day. She went one side and a load went the other side and she was still very green but she's as good as I've got so I thought we might as well give it a go today.

“This was the race we always had in mind and it was a question of keeping the faith, I’m pleased that Jaber (Abdullah) let us run and with his luck something had to go right.

"She's out of a Rainbow Quest mare and Noverre's made a great start as a stallion so we thought she'd probably need six or seven furlongs.

“All of my two-year-olds have run well this week so I'm delighted. She kept going. She wasn't stopping.

“The Lowther would be the next plan I’d imagine and I should think we’ll take the same route as Flashy Wings and all those fillies- it’s not rocket science.”

Nijoom Dubai was quoted at 33/1 for next year’s 1000 Guineas with William Hill although just 16/1 with Boylesports but Channon said: “I don’t even think about that at the moment, so much can go wrong that you don’t look that far ahead.”

Race 1 - Albany Stakes - Placed Quotes

O’BRIEN AND NOSEDA SATISFIED

You’resothrilling pleased trainer Aidan O’Brien following her length and a quarter defeat by Nijoom Dubai in the Group Three Albany Stakes, the opener on day four of Royal Ascot 2007.

The master of Ballydoyle said of the second: “She ran very well and Mick was happy with her.

“I think she may have had some horses come in front of her about a furlong out, although I need to watch the race again before I can be sure.”

Part-owner Michael Tabor: “She is a full-sister to Giant’s Causeway and really looks the part.

“Although she was beaten today, there is always hope for the future.”

Paddy Power have left You’resothrilling as 10/1 favourite for the 2008 1,000 Guineas.

A further two lengths back in third was Baffled and her trainer Jeremy Noseda said: “I am delighted.

“The trip was a bit sharp for her today and she is now ready to run over further. She could go over seven furlongs or maybe a mile.

“We might take it easy with her now and look more towards the end of the year.”

GROUND

After the opening Albany Stakes, the following jockeys reported the ground as:

Jamie Spencer, rider of winner Nijoom Dubai, said: “A bit slow on top - good ground.”

Darryll Holland and Seb Sanders said: “Good ground.”

Ted Durcan said: “On the easy side but not soft.”

John Egan said: “Soft.”

Richard Hills said: “Good to soft.”

Dane O’Neill said: “Just on the tacky side.”

Jimmy Fortune said: “Looser than good on the straight.”

Philip Robinson said: “The rain has got in a bit but they’re not going in deep.”

Kerrin McEvoy said: “Soft side ground.”

Kevin Darley said: “A bit loose.”

SECOND RACE KING EDWARD VII STAKES
WIN QUOTES

BOSCOBEL CROWNED KING OF ASCOT

Boscobel may have worn the second colours of owner Sheikh Mohammed, but horses don’t know what order they are meant to finish in and the Halling colt made almost all under Joe Fanning to deny Lucarno by a length.

Winning trainer Mark Johnston, who was gaining his 28th Royal Meeting success and second of the week having struck with Zaham in yesterday’s Hampton Court Stakes, said: “I don’t know about the King George - we’ll go home and think about it.

“He is a horse which has gone through the ranks, starting on the all-weather, and he has proved tough as a result.

“He was in Sheikh Mohammed’s second colours and I thought that the others might ignore him and so it proved getting an easy lead.

“I have had him since November and last year I had a lot of horses running under the Jumeirah Racing banner. This year I have horses running in Sheikh Mohammed’s colours which lets him take the credit which is how it should have been in the first place.”

Fanning was gaining his second Royal Ascot success, following on from I’m So Lucky in last season’s Wolferton Handicap.

“Joe is a good jockey and an all-round horseman,” continued the Middleham trainer. “He settles horses and knows when to go and when not to go.

“It is never the plan to go from the front but if they are there so be it. There was no plan to go to the front and Joe is not going to scrub up to be in front. He kicked at just the right time and he is a master at it.

“That is only his second winner here and maybe that is my fault. He was always the guy that went to Ayr or Redcar while Ascot was on.”

Fanning added: “Mark said not to bustle him along early and if I got to the front to let him bowl along and then kick. He's very tough this horse.
"I felt them come to me but every time they got to my quarters he kept finding a bit. It was like Hamilton that time when he won the Listed race. He's tough and takes
racing well. He leans a little bit to the left but he's very hard."

Asked if Boscobel could be a St Leger horse, Fanning replied: "I think he could be. He'll definitely stay further so something like that would probably be the plan. It's nice to win a good race like this."

Ladbrokes and vcbet make the winner an 8/1 chance for the St Leger, the latter firm going from 20/1, while William Hill were more impressed introducing the three-year-old as 5/1 joint-favourite.

SECOND RACE PLACED QUOTES
KING EDWARD VII STAKES (GROUP 2)

SLOW PACE DIDN’T HELP LUCARNO

Trainer John Gosden felt that Vodafone Derby fourth Lucarno, who was sent off 5/2 favourite, would have benefited from a better pace after finishing a length second to Boscobel in the King Edward VII Stakes.

“The time was 2 minutes 37 seconds and change which tells you something,” said Gosden. “The Derby was a fast run race and this was slowly run, that’s the difference.

“The pace wasn’t quite what we wanted but the winner is a nice horse and I think we might have seen the Leger winner there. We’ll probably stay where are between a mile and a half and a mile and a quarter.”

Aidan O’Brien was happy with Yellowstone’s run to come third. “He ran well and is a horse that appreciates nice ground. I’m not sure what his ideal trip and we’ll have a chat about what we do next.”

The well-backed Lion Sands finished fourth under Frankie Dettori and his trainer Luca Cumani said: “He ran well but would have preferred a stronger pace. I thought it was brilliant ride from the front by Joe Fanning on the winner.

“The race became a sprint and the horses finished in the same place as when the sprint began. It was a slow time. However, the race was good experience for him. I don’t know where he will go next.”

GOING CHANGE

The going was changed after the second race to GOOD TO SOFT, SOFT IN PLACES on the Round Course and GOOD TO SOFT on the Straight Course.

Race 3 - Coronation Stakes - Winning Quotes

INK MARKS HER MARK

Indian Ink bounced back to form with an impressive six-length victory in the Coronation Stakes to give both trainer Richard Hannon and jockey Richard Hughes their first Group One success at Royal Ascot.

The winner travelled superbly throughout and went right away inside the final furlong.

Richard Hannon said: “The ground made a big difference to her today. To be honest, I thought the rain that came might not make a difference but obviously it has.

“All her best runs last year came on soft ground and Hughesy told me in the paddock beforehand that he thought the ground was right for her today. In the Guineas, the ground was all wrong for her.

“It looked as if she was travelling brilliantly, although with Hughesy you never really know!

“This filly has always worked well and has always been very straightforward.”

The winner was well-supported in the betting market this morning but Hannon was quick to point out that the money did not come from him: “The gamble didn’t come from my end!

“But well done to those who backed her. Good luck to the punters who looked at her form on soft ground and backed her.”

Indian Ink continued this season’s trend of relatively cheap horses winning at the highest level, having only cost 25,000 guineas as a yearling.

Hannon continued: “Raymond (Tooth, owner) was behind me when I bought her at Tattersalls.

“I just bought her on spec. I didn’t have an owner when I bought her so Raymond asked me if he could buy her.

“I thought being by Indian Ridge and out of a Darshaan mare she was cheap at 25,000 guineas.

“I couldn’t find anything wrong her and just think she was one who slipped through the net.

“She is definitely the best filly I’ve ever had.

“Being out of a Darshaan mare, she should stay well. We will look at maybe taking her to France and she is also entered in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket - I would love to go there if the ground is right.

“She could even go over further. There is no great rush as to where she goes next.”

Jockey Richard Hughes added: “All this filly needs is the ground, especially being by Indian Ridge.

“We were disappointed after her run in the Guineas - the firm ground did not suit her there.

“It was a relief today as she showed just how good she is.

“I thought ‘brilliant’ each time it rained today!

“Today I managed to get her in a great rhythm and followed Kevin Manning on Finsceal Beo. I then kicked on and she ran on well - she is an exceptional filly.

“We ride winners at Bath, Folkestone and Windsor all week but this is what it is all about.

“I just want the ground to dry up now for Asset in the Golden Jubilee Stakes tomorrow!”

THIRD RACE CORONATION STAKES
PLACED QUOTES

INTERNATIONAL RAIDERS PLACED

Mi Emma and Darjina played their part in making today’s Coronation Stakes a vintage renewal, but neither international contestant could handle Indian Ink’s sensational turn of foot finishing six lengths and a head adrift respectively.

Andreas Wohler, the German trainer of Mi Emma, said: “The winner likes soft ground and my horse is speedier on faster ground.

“She ran a terrific race and I am happy and to be second in a race like this is like winning the race!

“She will run next in five weeks’ time in the Group One Prix d’Astarte - a mile race for fillies (Deauville, July 29). She’s fine and probably needed the run after having a break.”

Princess Zahra Aga Khan said of third-placed Darjina, who she owns and bred and is trained in France by Alain de Royer Dupre, said: “She didn’t like the ground and that was not her usual good action.

“I’m not sure where she will run next but she could go for the Prix d’Astarte with maybe another run beforehand.”

When it was suggested to Her Highness that it was unlucky that the rain had come, she responded: “That’s how it goes - that’s racing.”

THIRD RACE PLACED QUOTES
CORONATION STAKES (GROUP 1)

GROUND SLOWS BEO

Trainer Jim Bolger and jockey Kevin Manning felt that the rain-softened ground slowed down dual Guineas winner Finscal Beo, who finished only eighth when sent off 100/30 joint-favourite for the Coronation Stakes.

“Kevin felt she was just not able to quicken on this ground,” said Bolger. “I’d say she just doesn’t like it when it’s like that - she’s not the same filly on it. We’ll be more careful about the ground in future and there’ll no doubt be other days - she’ll have all the entries.”

Manning added: “She was travelling unbelievably well and I arrived there but couldn’t quicken on the ground, she was losing her footing on it.”

FOURTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
WOLFERTON HANDICAP (LISTED)

POINT IS CHAMPION FOR CHANNON

Mick Channon completed a 1,325/1 double when 25/1 chance Championship Point, winner of last year’s Predominate Stakes at Goodwood, bounced back to form to land the Wolferton Handicap by a length.

“The Derby really messed him up last year and he was really shook up and took a long time to come back,” said Channon. “He has been well tried and ran a couple of decent races last time and also ran well in Dubai. I think we made too much use of him last time and decided to hold him up today, which seemed to work.

“We hope he can get back to Listed or Group company now and there is some good prize money for these older horses. The good thing is that we’ve stuck with him.”

Winning jockey Darryll Holland added: “He has some fair form and I think I made too much use of him at Goodwood because I thought Road To Love was the one to beat there and he blew me out. He tends to really extend himself and push himself out on this ground.”

Championship Point’s tennis fanatic owner John Livock, who is set to attend his 48th Wimbledon final later this month, added: “I’ve run out of tennis names so have had to cut down on the horses! I thought the jockey gave the horse a great ride but I wasn’t really expecting that.”

FOURTH RACE WOLFERTON HANDICAP STAKES
PLACED QUOTES

HEAVEN SENT JUST DENIED

Heaven Sent battled gallantly but eventually could not hold the challenge of winner Championship Point, going down by a length.

Sir Michael Stoute, trainer of the runner-up, said: “That was a great effort and she just tied up in that ground.

“It was her first time at one mile and two furlongs and she’s game.”

Charlie Cool was a further length and a quarter away in third.

His rider, Neil Callan, said: “That was different ground to what he’s been racing on, but he gets one mile and two furlongs no problem and is relaxing with the visors.

“I got the split up the inner and then I thought that I would do some damage and go on and win. But he couldn’t quicken as he can on better ground.

“However, I liked the way that he relaxed with the visors and we’re not finished with him yet.”

FIFTH RACE QUEEN’S VASE
WIN QUOTES

MAHLER COULD BE LEGER BOUND

Mahler, who was 11th behind Authorized in the Vodafone Derby on his last start, could be returning to Classic company in the St Leger at Doncaster after an emphatic victory in the Queen’s Vase.

Winning trainer Aidan O’Brien said: “I would say that the St Leger could very much be the plan. I was very worried about the ground today as he is such a good-moving horse by Galileo.

“He is a very classy horse obviously as he wasn’t favoured by the ground. I always thought that he was very nice before Epsom after winning his maiden and a trial and he learnt a lot there.

“He stays very well I would say and is a very classy stayer. He is potentially a very high-class Cup horse next year as he is only a three-year-old now.”

The trainer had news of Yeats, who was so impressive in winning yesterday’s Gold Cup for a second time.

“We will have a meeting with the boss and everybody and the options are Goodwood/the Irish St Leger/the Prix du Cadran and the Melbourne Cup and all options are open.”

George Washington was fourth in Tuesday’s Queen Anne Stakes and the master of Ballydoyle reported: “He cantered this morning and he has taken the race very well. His options are the Sussex Stakes and other races.

“He possibly but not definitely might stay at a mile and we’ve always thought that he will get further in time and we have options.”

Boylesports were mightily impressed with the winner going 5/1 for the St Leger (from 12/1), while William Hill introduced him into their market at 7/1.

Race 5 - Queen’s Vase - Placed Quotes

VERACITY AND SECRET RUN WELL

Veracity and Secret Tune, second and third respectively in the Queen’s Vase behind Mahler, both pleased their connections.

Michael Jarvis, trainer of the three-and-a-half length runner-up, 11/1 chance Veracity, said: “I was delighted with that.

“He stayed on well and we were simply beaten by a better horse on the day. There are no excuses for him.

“I think we will probably continue to aim him at races run over two miles as that seems to suit him.”

Secret Tune, also 11/1, was a further head back in third and his trainer Pat Eddery commented: “He is a very lazy horse but keeps on digging when you ask him.

“We will see how he comes out of this, but he could maybe go for the Bahrain Trophy at the Newmarket July Meeting next time.”

ONE-DAY BAN FOR CALLAN

Neil Callan was suspended for one day (Tuesday, July 3) following his ride on third-placed Charlie Cool in the Wolferton Handicap.

The stewards held that under Rule 153 (iii) Callan had interfered with Lake Poet, ridden by Seb Sanders.

It was considered by the stewards that the interference was caused by Callan, in that he manoeuvred to his right when there was insufficient room.

Race 6 - Buckingham Palace Handicap - Winning & Placed Quotes

BINANTI SURVIVES STEWARDS’

Binanti survived a lengthy stewards’ enquiry to cause a 33/1 upset in the Buckingham Palace Handicap and give trainer Patrick Chamings his first Royal Ascot winner.

The stewards’ held an enquiry to determine whether the winner had interfered with the runner-up, Fajr, who went down by a length.

Patrick Chamings said: “That was agonising - worse than waiting in the dentist’s waiting room!

“Frannie (Norton, jockey) was adamant that we would be OK as he was clearly the best horse and won by far enough. We would have been very unlucky to lose that.

“Binanti is a consistent little horse who has done us proud.

“We have been enjoying such a good year. Take A Bow gave us our first Group winner at Sandown and now we have had our first Royal Ascot winner - what a special moment.

“He ran a blinder last week at Sandown and I did almost pull him out today because of the soft ground.

“However, we thought we would have a go as he finished third in this race last year and seems much better in himself this year.

“This horse is always placed and has been a great servant to his owner, Mrs Wright, who turns 90 next week.

“He has been rated in the 80s for the past five years. All my horses run genuine. I don’t like to run my horses down at the end of the season just to lower their handicap mark.”

Gay Kelleway, trainer of second-placed Fajr, said: “Our’s is a big horse and he was taken across the track and it cost him the race.

“We’d have got the race in France and I’m gutted and had a huge bet each-way - I couldn’t see him being out of the first three. He’ll go for a 0-100 at Newcastle now.”

FRANNIE NORTON BANNED

Following an enquiry into interference in the concluding Buckingham Palace Handicap, Frannie Norton, who rode the winner Binanti, was found guilty of careless riding having allowed his mount to drift left without straightening.

The stewards ordered the placings to remain unaltered but banned Norton for three days, July 3 to 5.

PIGGOTT TO JOIN CARSON, DETTORI, MERCER AND OTHER LEGENDS AT ROYAL ASCOT AS CHAMPION JOCKEYS UNITE FOR EXCLUSIVE PHOTOGRAPH

Photo-call in aid of The Sir Peter O'Sullevan Charitable Trust

At The Races is thrilled to announce that Lester Piggott will attend Royal Ascot today, as Champion Jockeys of the Flat come together for the first time to be photographed in aid of the Peter O'Sullevan Charitable Trust.

This is the third of four photo-calls at Ascot for the Champions Project, which is bringing together all living Champion Jockeys and Trainers of British Flat and National Hunt Racing in order to produce four unique photographs which will be sold as reproduction and limited edition prints to raise funds for the Peter O'Sullevan Charitable Trust.

Of all the legends of the sport in attendance, Lester Piggott's participation is particularly valued given his recent illness. The racing world will be delighted to welcome Piggott back to Ascot, where he rode an astonishing 116 winners.

The other Champion jockeys in attendance are: Willie Carson, Kevin Darley, Frankie Dettori, Pat Eddery, Joe Mercer, Ryan Moore and Jamie Spencer. Steve Cauthen, Kieren Fallon and Michael Roberts will be photographed separately in specific shoots for the project and their images carried as inserts in the Champion Flat Jockeys picture.

Royal and Society Photographer, Ian Jones, will shoot these specially commissioned, one-off pieces of racing memorabilia. Reproduced signature prints will be sold individually for £99 and as a complete set for £300. There will also be a limited edition run of original, signed prints, priced at £1,250 each and £4,000 for the set. All proceeds from the sale will go to Peter O'Sullevan's Charitable Trust which provides invaluable support to six animal welfare charities. Those wishing to register their interest or to reserve a limited edition, original singed print, can visit www.attheraces.com/champions.

The Peter O'Sullevan Charitable Trust was set up to raise much needed funds for the six welfare concerns to which it is dedicated: The Brooke, Compassion in World Farming, The International League for the Protection of Horses, The Blue Cross, Racing Welfare and The Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre.

Matthew Imi, Chief Executive, ATR, said: “We are enormously pleased that Lester will be at Ascot for the Champions Project. Everyone in racing will be delighted to see him, and a photo of Champion jockeys would not be complete without him. We look forward to seeing everyone at Ascot and most importantly, we are hopeful of raising a large amount of money for those charities which receive vital proceeds from Sir Peter's Trust."

Sir Peter O'Sullevan commented: "This is a wonderful concept and I thank At The Races for their magnificent support, and Ascot for providing such a glorious backdrop. New funds are crucial to our six benefiting charities and this project will make a terrific contribution."

GLOBAL SPRINT CHALLENGE LEADERBOARD

Miss Andretti at the moment has a stranglehold on the 2007 Global Sprint Challenge following her wins in King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot on Tuesday, the Timbercorp Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley on February 17 and the Coolmore Lightning Stakes at Moonee Valley on February 3.

Miss Andretti is therefore the leading contender to claim the US$1 million bonus. She is due to contest the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot tomorrow along with Magnus and Takeover Target.

The bonus is on offer to any horse that contests Global Sprint Challenge races in all four countries - the series moves on to Japan and Hong Kong after Royal Ascot - and wins Group One races in three of those countries.

US$1 MILLION CHAMPIONSHIP BONUS

Again in 2007, the Global Sprint Challenge champion will be eligible to win a US$1 million bonus for its connections, provided the champion has competed in GSC races in all four countries. To win the championship bonus the horse must also win a minimum of three of the GSC Group 1 races in three different countries.

CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY

The Champion Sprinter trophy will be awarded to the horse that accumulates 42 points or above in a single season, and participates in challenge races in at least three countries.

SCORING SYSTEM

The Global Sprint Challenge points will be awarded as follows:
Win10 points
Second5 points
Third4 points
Fourth3 points
Fifth2 points
Any starter1 point

Double points will apply for horses competing in Group 1 races outside their racing jurisdiction.

Racing jurisdictions are: Europe and United Arab Emirates (Domestic challenge races run by Ascot), Hong Kong & Macau (Domestic challenge races run by HKJC), Japan (Domestic challenge races run by JRA), Australia and New Zealand (Domestic challenge races run by Racing Victoria Limited)

Horses trained outside these jurisdictions (including North and South America, Africa and other Asian jurisdictions) qualify for double points throughout.

GLOBAL SPRINT CHALLENGE CHAMPION

The Global Sprint Challenge champion is determined by the horse with the highest number of points from challenge races listed in this booklet and satisfies the following:

• accumulates 42 points or above in a single season
• participates in challenge races in at least three countries

It is important to note that in some years there may not be a Global Sprint Challenge champion. The champion in 2005 was Cape of Good Hope (HK) and in 2006 is Takeover Target (AUS).

The Global Sprint Challenge champion horse also identifies the winning owner, trainer and jockey. Where the challenge champion horse is ridden by more than one jockey, the jockey with the highest number of points receives the trophy, or in the event of a tie, the jockey with the highest prize money earnings.

In the event of two horses each sharing highest points at the end of the challenge year, the championship will be decided on a count-back of results with ‘away’ results counting ahead of home results.

Throughout the Global Sprint Challenge events, tables are to be published identifying the relative points accumulated by horses competing for challenge champion status.

If a challenge champion horse is sold during the course of the challenge season, the winning owner will be recognised as the owner of the horse at the finale of the annual challenge in Hong Kong.

In the case of a dead-heat between horses for 1st or other places up to 5th place, points will be shared from the combined total of points of the winning order of the horses concerned.

If a points earning horse is disqualified from a challenge race, either on race day or subsequently, challenge championship points will be allocated on the revised official result.

In the event of a postponement of a challenge race to a new date/venue in the same calendar year, points earned from the revised race date will still count towards the Global Sprint Challenge.

Each challenge event is run under the jurisdiction of each Jockey Club, Racing Association or appropriate race organiser, whose National or State rules of racing constitute the jurisdiction under which each race takes place.

Miss Andretti
With four straight victories in 2007 - three at Group One level and the latest at Group Two in England - Miss Andretti is the world’s leading sprinter of the year . The six-year-old mare captured the Lightning Stakes, the first leg of the 2007 Global Sprint Challenge, over five furlongs at Moonee Valley on February 3, breaking the course record as she blitzed to a length and a half success over Magnus. Miss Andretti returned to the Melbourne track two weeks later for the second leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, the six-furlong Australia Stakes, and showed blistering acceleration to account for Any Suggestion by a length and a quarter. On her most recent outing in the Newmarket Handicap at Caulfield over six furlongs on March 10, Miss Andretti cracked another course record as she held off Gold Edition by a head, conceding 8lb to the runner-up, with Magnus close up in fourth place. After her latest triumph, trainer Lee Freedman compared Miss Andretti with the great three-time Melbourne Cup heroine Makybe Diva, who he also trained. She won Tuesday’s King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot, England, in style and tums out again for tomorrow’s Golden Jubilee Stakes over an extra furlong.

Lee Freedman
Born August 12, 1956, Lee Freedman is one of the most successful Australian racehorse trainers of the past 25 years. Having sent out his first winner, Sitting Bull, at Canberra in 1983, Freedman has gone on to land a total of 119 Group One races. His Interest in racing developed when his father, Tony, retired as a property developer to concentrate on training and breeding. Freedman dropped out of university to run the family stud farm in Yass, NSW, before setting up as a trainer with his brothers Anthony, Richard and Michael, initially at Warwick Farm, Sydney and later at Avenel and Caulfield. He enjoyed phenomenal success in the late 1980s through to the mid-1990s with a host of big race wins. Suspended for four months in 1995 after substituting a horse at a barrier trial, Freedman was subsequently embroiled in the Encosta de Lago affair, in which the top three-year-old he trained tested positive for a prohibited substance but was allowed to run in the 1996 Bill Stutt Stakes, which he won. His fortunes declined between the 1997/98 and 2002/2003 seasons as he saddled only 15 Group One winners compared to 13 in the 1995/1996 season alone. However, he radically changed his training set-up after the 2000 Melbourne Cup, moving to ‘Markdel’, Rye, his purpose built training establishment named after his intellectually handicapped brother Mark and mother Del. More recently, Freedman acquired a two-year-old training facility at Tuerong, Denistoun Park. He trained the phenomenal mare Makybe Diva to land the second and third legs of her Melbourne Cup treble (2004 & 2005), a contest he also took with Tawrrific (1989), Subzero (1992) and Doriemus (1995). Freedman has also won the Caulfield Cup four times (1992 Mannerism, 1994 Paris Lane, 1995 Doriemus, 2003 Mummify), the Golden Slipper four times(1993 Bint Marscay, 1994 Danzero, 1995 Flying Spur, 1996 Merlene) and the Cox Plate twice (1992 Super Impose, 2005 Makybe Diva). He trained his 100th Group One winner with Mummify in the Yalumba Stakes at Caulfield on October 9, 2004, and paid his first visit to Royal Ascot last year with Falkirk, who finished a fine fourth behind compatriot Takeover Target in the King’s Stand Stakes. Miss Andretti’s success in the 2007 Australia Stakes gave Freedman the full set of Victoria Group One races (27 in total). He is married to Janelle and has two daughters, Emma and Georgia. Lee Freedman commented after the King’s Stand Stakes: “You don't see that too often! That was why we brought her over - we wanted the world to see how good she is. That was an awesome display. I always wanted to win a Group One race in Europe and this race should be a Group One but this is the first time I have had the chance. We’ve come 12,000 miles with her which is always risky - she had to travel and settle it so it was a massive gamble. It is marvellous just to come here and compete.”

Craig Newitt
Born March 10, 1985, Craig Newitt was always destined to become a jockey - his parents, Guy Newitt and Virginia Wells, were both jockeys, as were their fathers, Geoff Newitt and Tas Wells. From the age of nine, he mixed the pony club and riding track-work. After being granted an apprenticeship in 2000, Newittt rode his first winner on Kimbra’s Way at Elwick, Hobart, Tasmania, in November 2000, and quickly established himself as a fine rider, landing the Tasmanian jockeys’ premiership in 2000/01. In 2002, he was offered the chance to ride in Melbourne and joined Lee Freedman’s stable, taking the 2002/03 Victorian apprentices’ premiership. His first Group win was on the Freedman-trained True Glo in the 2003 Queensland Guineas at Eagle Farm. In June, 2004, Newitt’s career took a nosedive when he was disqualified by the Racing Victoria stewards for 18 months, after giving false evidence at the Leone Chiara enquiry, which stemmed from an enquiry into Newitt’s ride on the horse seven months earlier. However, he was soon back in the big time after returning to ride in November, 2005, ending the season with four Group One winners, including the Australian Cup with 50/1 chance Roman Arch.

Magnus
Magnus opened his account in a three-year-old maiden over five furlongs at Werribee on October 8, 2005. The colt progressed through the ranks and posted some decent placed efforts in Listed class before making his Group One debut in the Cleanevent Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley in September, 2006. The son of Flying Spur ran with credit to finish three and a half lengths fifth of 13 in the six-furlong contest behind the victorious Miss Andretti. A runner-up finish to Bentley Biscuit in the Group Three Short Stakes came the following month, as did a second placing in the Group Two Caulfield Sprint. A second tilt at Group One company resulted in Magnus finishing 10th to Dance Hero in the six-furlong Seppelt Salinger Stakes at Flemington on November 4, 2006, but he returned to the course and distance seven days later to secure the Group Two AGE Classic from Undue. Peter Moody’s charge again found Miss Andretti too good when a length and a half runner-up to the mare in Group One Coolmore Lightning Stakes over five furlongs at Moonee Valley in February. Undue gained revenge at Caulfield later that month when relegating Magnus to a close third in the Group One Ultra Tune Oakleigh Plate over five and a half furlongs. He was again behind that rival on March 10, when fourth in the six-furlong Group One Seppelt Wines Newmarket Handicap at Caulfield won by Miss Andretti. Magnus gained a deserved first Group One triumph when taking the Bisley Workwear Galaxy Handicap by a neck from Fast ‘N’ Famous. Ridden by Damien Oliver, the five-year-old had Bentley Biscuit just over a length back in fourth in the extended five-furlong Warwick Farm contest on March 25. He ran very well when third in Tuesday’s Group Two King’s Stand Stakes.

Peter Moody
Raised in Charleville, Queensland, Peter Moody worked for legendary trainers T. J. Smith and Colin Hayes, and spent 10 years as foreman to Bill Mitchell before being granted a trainer’s licence in his own name. Initially based in Queensland, his first Group One success came in November 2001 when Amalfi took the VRC Derby. In 2003, Moody moved his operation to Caulfield racetrack in Melbourne, Victoria. His first full season in Victoria saw him win the Victoria Country Trainers premiership and finish second in the Victorian Premiership. His most successful season to date was the 2005/2006 season when he saddled 160 winners to finish third in the Metropolitan premiership with over 50 winners, second in the Victorian and Victorian Country premierships and fifth nationally. Sky Cuddle took the 2004 Group One Emirates Classic for Moody and his longstanding patrons and friends Stuart and Trish Ramsey. The Ramseys teamed up again with Moody for a poignant victory in the Group One Doomben Cup on May 19, which Moody described as “the greatest moment of my racing life”. Cinque Cento’s success in the Doomben contest came two weeks after the Ramseys’ 18-year-old daughter Sherilee died in her sleep of natural causes. Further Group One successes have come with Ancient Song in the 2003 Salinger Stakes, Testifiable in the 2006 SA Derby and Magnus in this year’s Galaxy Handicap. Magnus is Moody’s first overseas runner. The trainer arrived in Newmarket on June 7, to oversee his charge’s preparation for Royal Ascot.

Damien Oliver
Born July 22, 1972 in Perth, Western Australia, Damien Oliver rode his first winner aboard Mr Gudbud at Bunbury, Western Australia in March 1988, and is one of Australia’s top riders. His father Ray, a former champion apprentice, died in a fall at Kalgoorlie in 1975 and his brother Jason died in October, 2002 during a race trial at Belmont racetrack in Perth. He himself suffered a horror fall at Moonee Valley in March, 2005, which left him with two broken vertebrae. He returned to action at Flemington in June, 2006. He was raised by his mother Pat and her partner, Perth trainer Lindsay Rudland. A leading apprentice in Perth in 1988-89 with 66 winners, Oliver is Melbourne’s seven-time champion jockey and six-time winner of the coveted Scobie Breasley medal for excellence in riding. After securing the Perth apprentice title despite riding for only six months of the season, he was invited to join Lee Freedman’s stable. He won his first Group One on the Bart Cummings-trained Submariner in the 1990 Vic Health Cup and, at the age of 19, became the first Australian apprentice to win the Australian Derby. His 71 city winners in the 1990-91 season clinched the Victorian Metropolitan premiership as an apprentice and he finished his apprenticeship with a record 19 Group One wins. With over 1,700 wins on the board, including more than 400 black type contests and 70 Group One prizes, he is currently behind only George Moore on the Australian all-time winning-most riders’ list. He rode in Ireland for a three-month period in 2000, based at trainer Aidan O’Brien’s Ballydoyle stables, during which time he partnered Alluring to victory in the Irish 1,000 Guineas. His big-race successes include Melbourne Cup wins aboard Doriemus (1995) and the Dermot Weld-trained Media Puzzle (2002). His victory on Doriemus clinched the coveted Caulfield Cup/Melbourne Cup double that season. He also partnered Northerly to win three Group One races including the 2001 Cox Plate, while he enjoyed four Group One successes on 2004 Vinery Stud 1,000 Guineas heroine Alinghi.

Takeover Target
Joe Janiak bought the broken down and unraced Takeover Target for less than AUS$1,500 (£600) - variously AUS$1,450, AUS$1,400, AUS$1,350 and AUS$1,250 have been put on the value of the purchase. The gelding made a resounding early impression on his trainer/owner, leaving Janiak with 30 stitches to a head wound after flooring him before a barrier trial. He was put out to grass for six months after that incident but went on to secure seven straight victories when finally making it to the track. The first of those came in a maiden over six furlongs at Queanbeyaan on April 23, 2004, and the last in the sequence was the Group One Seppelt Salinger Stakes at Flemington on October 30 of that year. He continued to run respectably in top events without winning until securing the Group Three Summer Stakes at Doomben on December 10, 2005. He proceeded to rattle off a hat-trick, adding a Listed contest 14 days later and then taking his second Group One prize, the five-furlong Lightning Stakes at Flemington in February 2006. Two further starts, including victory in the Group One Newmarket Stakes at Flemington the following month, preceded a trip to Britain. Takeover Target made a stunning British debut when taking the Group Two King’s Stand Stakes at Ascot by a short-head from Benbaun and finished a creditable third to Les Arcs in the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes four days later. The gelding failed to fire when two lengths seventh to Les Arcs in the Group One July Cup at Newmarket in July. Takeover Target left for Japan and ran second in the Grade Two Centaur Stakes in September before landing the Group One Sprinters Stakes at Nakayama on October 1, by two and a half lengths from Meisho Bowler. The gelding was controversially prevented from competing in Hong Kong in December after medication was found in his system. He was crowned Global Sprint Challenge champion for 2006. His return to Australia brought a fifth to Bentley Biscuit in the Group One All-Aged Stakes at Randwick on April 14, and that was followed by a close second to the same rival over six furlongs at Doomben in the TBC Cup. He returned to top form in the seven-furlong Group One Carlton Draught Doomben 10,000 on May 26, when he swept aside star filly Gold Edition for a half-length verdict. He ran well to finish fourth in Tuesday’s King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot but his trainer feels he will be better over the extra furlong of Golden Jubilee Stakes tomorrow.

Joe Janiak
Joe Janiak is now based at Coffs Harbour in New South Wales, where he moved his 10-strong string of racehorses to after success with Takeover Target in last year’s Group Two King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot. He said after that success: “This is a big dream that’s come true - I would never have thought that I would train a winner at Royal Ascot.” Born to Polish parents on a boat travelling to Australia, the 60-year-old is a former baker and taxi driver who shovelled manure at stables as a child to pay for school. He trained a couple of racehorses in a part-time capacity and lived for over 12 years a caravan at Queanbeyaan, a country racetrack outside Canberra. During this time, he bought the broken down and unraced Takeover Target for less than AUS$1,500 (£600). He suffered 30 stitches to a head wound when the gelding floored him before a barrier trial but Takeover Target has since done him proud round the world.. He owns Takeover Target in partnership with his sons Ben and Scott and has trained around 100 winners.

Jay Ford
Based in Sydney, New South Wales, Jay Ford began riding Takeover Target as a 20-year-old apprentice in 2004 and has partnered the gelding to all of his 14 wins to date and 25 of his 26 starts. The star sprinter’s trainer Joe Janiak gave Ford his first career win. He was New South Wales Champion Apprentice in 2003/2004 and, on July 10, 2004, became the first junior in over 25 years to ride five winners in a day at a Sydney Metropolitan meeting. He began riding in 2001 and spent the latter part of his apprenticeship with Rosehill trainer Kim Waugh. Takeover Target provided him with his first Group One win when taking the Seppelt Salinger Stakes at Flemington on October 30, 2004. As well as his global exploits on Takeover Target, Ford’s big-race wins also include the 2005 Spring Champion Stakes and the 2006 Randwick Guineas aboard Hotel Grand.

PIGGOTT AND LEGENDS UNITE

Lester Piggott joined seven other champion jockeys at Royal Ascot this afternoon as Champion Jockeys of the Flat came together for the first time to be photographed in aid of the Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust.

It was great to see Piggott at the scene of where he rode 116 Royal Ascot winners, trained Cutting Blade to win the Coventry Stakes in 1986, and owned two winners in Superstar Leo and Mont Etoile, who won the 2000 Norfolk Stakes and 2006 Ribblesdale Stakes, after his recent illness.

Piggott said: “It’s terrific to be here and all those winners came over a long period of time. I have had some terrific days at Royal Ascot especially winning three Gold Cups on Sagaro.

“I’m fine but I don’t think that I will be riding this week - probably the week after! All of my riding colleagues are here and it’s the same today - you always get great battles, especially here at Ascot.

“Sir Peter O’Sullevan and I have been coming here so long and it’s unbelievable and the photoshoot is for his charity. I’ve got nothing running today but it’s terrific and it’s like a dream team photo.”

While Piggott rode Le Moss to win the Gold Cup in 1979, Joe Mercer was on the Henry Cecil-trained stayer when he prevailed again the following year.

Mercer said: “I have a lot of great memories of Royal Ascot, especially in the Gold Cup on Le Moss who made every inch of the running and was a great stayer. That was one of the best.

“I won the St James’s Palace Stakes twice on Brigadier Gerard and Kris, and the Coronation Stakes four times, including on Festoon, and the Ribblesdale Stakes a couple of times.”

Willie Carson, who is an integral part of the BBC Racing Team this week, added: “This is very exciting and we’ll see Lester after he’s had the illness and it will be nice to see him and how he is. It will be great fun and a good gas.

“We’ll have to keep the thumb down on Jamie [Spencer] and Ryan [Moore] as they’re doing it [riding winners and being champion] at the moment.

“This is a great idea and I hope that it raises lots of money for racing charities. There are so many good memories and I made a great life for myself.

“Winning my first championship was a great moment and I had a party. I thought about the other people there that this is your night, but it’s my year.”

Pat Eddery added: “I see a lot of the others all of the time, but I haven’t seen Joe for quite a while. It is nice that Lester is able to arrive and hopefully he’s looking good after a bit of a problem.

“It’s great to see everybody here and I have been able to make Ryan smile a little bit - he’s alright.

“I rode plenty with Lester and Willie and we’ve fallen out many times when out on the battlefield trying to win, but they were good guys to ride with.

“I won the championship on the last day against Steve Cauthen and Lester. You can’t afford to miss any one day as it’s a long year and it’s competitive. This is a great cause.”

“My favourite memory of Royal Ascot was winning the Coronation Stakes on Attraction in 2004,” said Kevin Darley. “She was an awesome filly and I think that was the most impressive that she’s ever been.

“I did get a bit of a rollicking though from the Duke of Roxburghe [owner] though as I put my finger up in the air before crossing the line and if I hadn’t have done that, I would probably have broken the track record.”

Jamie Spencer said: “It’s hard to know what my favourite Royal Ascot memory is. Winning on Tuesday on Excellent Art was probably as much of a thrill as anything. That and winning the Queen Mary Stakes on Damson in 2004.

“Excellent Art’s win was great as it was a Group One and the horse that wins the St James’s Palace Stakes is often a champion three-year-old as it is the last top race of that kind and the winner is generally recognized as the best three-year-old.”

Ryan Moore, who is still chasing that elusive first Royal Ascot success, said: “I haven’t got any great memories of the meeting yet! I am still learning about it.”
