ROYAL ASCOT 2007
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
THIRD DAY, THURSDAY, JUNE 21

CROWD UP

Today’s attendance was 74,172, compared to 72,947 on the same day in 2006.

Nick Smith, Ascot’s Head of Public Relations, commented: “Today was a very pleasing Gold Cup day crowd and people seemed to have enjoyed themselves, which is excellent news given that this is the first sell out in the main enclosures this week.

“The new plaza layout and old paddock bars in General Admission and the Silver Ring generally coped extremely well with their first huge crowd, in spite of the weather.”

GOING UPDATE

After two millimetres of rain at Ascot today, the going overnight remains unchanged.

Ascot’s clerk of the course Chris Stickels commented: “I’ve kept the ground as Good to Firm, Firm in places, on the Straight Course and Good to Firm, Good in places, on the Round Course. We are forecast more rain overnight and into tomorrow.”

PREVIEW: GOLDEN JUBILEE STAKES

MISS ANDRETTI BACK FOR GOLDEN JUBILEE THRILLER

Miss Andretti will seek to emulate former top Australian sprinter Choisir by completing a King’s Stand-Golden Jubilee double on Saturday.

The brilliant mare smashed the five-furlong track record at Ascot on Tuesday, thrilling the crowd. She stormed home by a length and three quarters and clipped a full 2.35sec off Takeover Target’s previous record set in last year’s King’s Stand.

The good news is that the Lee Freedman-trained speedster is back at the Royal Meeting this Saturday as part of a 22-strong field for the Golden Jubilee Stakes. Also lining up in the £350,000 Group One will be fellow Aussies Magnus and Takeover Target.

Joe Janiak, trainer of Takeover Target, said today: “Everything is good. The run didn’t knock him around too much. He is having an easy week. The six furlongs will suit him better. They just went too quick for him early on the other day. Now he is older, he has lost a little bit of that ‘early sprint’ so the extra distance will suit him. I wouldn’t be worried about ground and the 10 draw is fine.”

Underlining the cosmopolitan nature of the Golden Jubilee Stakes, Drayton - reverting to sprinting after apparently not staying the mile trip in the 2000 Guineas - will be sent out by top South African trainer Mike de Kock.

Richard Hannon leads a three-pronged home challenge against the Australian raiders. Abernant Stakes first and second Asset and Assertive will break from stalls 12 and 14 respectively, while Presto Shinko has been drawn nine.

Marlborough trainer Hannon said: “Asset and Assertive are perfectly drawn and they’ve both got good chances. Asset is obviously a very good horse and Assertive was second to him at Newmarket so he is entitled to be there or thereabouts. Assertive goes on anything - he is very capable. Asset won’t mind the ground at all. Presto Shinko would like a bit of rain.”

Trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam is double-handed with Al Qasi and Hamoody, while Soldier’s Tale represents Jeremy Noseda’s yard. Kevin Ryan is hoping his charge Amadeus Wolf can follow up after his Group Two Duke Of York Stakes victory at York last month. Ryan will also saddle Wi Dud.

Red Clubs, second to Amadeus Wolf on the Knavesmire, is Lambourn trainer Barry Hills’ runner. The field is completed by Appalachian Trail, Baltic King, Borderlescott, Bygone Days, Quito, Rising Shadow, Firenze, Fayr Jag and Mastership.

Race 1 - Norfolk Stakes - Winning Quotes

WATSON GIVES FORTUNE HIS FIFTH ROYAL ASCOT WINNER

Jockey Jimmy Fortune extended his lead at the top of the London Clubs International Trophy when winning his fifth race of Royal Ascot 2007 aboard Winker Watson in the Group Two Norfolk Stakes, the opening race on Ladies Day.

The winner showed plenty of determination when running on well inside the final furlong to record a length and a quarter victory over Art Advisor.

Trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam said: “We just got away with that today as I think he wants further than five furlongs. He had been trained for the Norfolk Stakes and so we came for this race instead of the Coventry Stakes on Tuesday, where we ran Declaration Of War instead.

“The horse is still quite green. I think he could be the best of our early two-year-olds but who knows what will happen by the end of the season.

“Dutch Art won this race last year and kept going throughout the season so why shouldn’t this horse?

“He will step up in trip but I’m not sure where he will go next. He could well go to France as the owners would like to run in something like the Prix Morny. I think he is pretty good and is still improving.”

Jimmy Fortune added: “This horse is certainly top-class on everything I’ve asked him to do. He took a while to get going today and is still a bit green, a baby, but picked up well when I asked him.

"He got there and I probably should have pulled my stick through, he's just ducked that way when I've hit him, but he's done it very well.

"The plan was to come to Ascot, and Peter didn't know whether to go for this race or the Coventry. He chose this race, but Peter and I think he's going to be a better horse over six furlongs."

“I knew I had good rides at the start of the week, although you count yourself lucky if you get one winner at Royal Ascot. I’ve still got some good rides to look forward to but this is the world’s hardest meeting to ride winners at.

“To be honest, I think anyone could have won on my five winners so far this week!”

FIRST RACE PLACED QUOTES
NORFOLK STAKES (GROUP 2)

JOHNSON AND FIELDEN LOOK FORWARD TO NEXT YEAR

Trainer Howard Johnson believes there is better to come from Art Advisor after the Noverre colt finished a length and a quarter second to Winker Watson in the Norfolk Stakes.

“He ran very well but he’s still green and probably would have liked more give in the ground,” said Johnson. “He’ll get six furlongs no problem and he could go for the Gimcrack at York but he’s going to make a right three-year-old.”

Julia Feilden was also delighted with third-placed Spirit Of Sharjah. “Kerrin (McEvoy) said the horse wants six now but I’m delighted with how he’s run, we were only beaten a short-head for second,” said Feilden.

“I hope he gets a mile next year and we can have a crack at the Guineas. He’ll go over six furlongs next time and we may have a look at the July Stakes at Newmarket - I’m not too familiar with the Pattern Book!”

RACE 1: NORFOLK STAKES
GROUND

GROUND IS SLOWER

Several of the jockeys reported the ground to be a little slower than it has been so far this week.

Kerrin McEvoy, rider of Spirit Of Sharjah, said: “It is deadish ground - the slowest it has been all week.”

Johnny Murtagh, rider of Strike The Deal, said: “It is a little slower than yesterday.”

Pat Cosgrave, rider of Roker Park, said: “It is good ground.”

Hugh Bowman, rider of Carleton, said: “It is slower than the last couple of days but it is good ground.”

Seb Sanders, rider of Art Advisor, said: “It is good fast ground.”

Ryan Moore, rider of Jebel Tara, said: “It is still quick.”

RACE 2: The Ribblesdale Stakes
WIN QUOTES.

SILKWOOD SO CLASSY IN RIBBLESDALE ROMP

Silkwood showed that she is a most progressive filly when making a successful transition from handicapping to Group company by taking the Ribblesdale Stakes in tremendous style..

The three-year-old Singspiel filly, having her fourth start, was re-routed to Royal Ascot after connections swerved the Oaks as a result of the easy ground conditions at Epsom.

It proved a shrewd decision as she travelled like a dream in the Group Two at the Royal Meeting, easily picking off the long-time leader Majounes Song as they swung down the straight.

She veered left inside the final furlong but had no bother in cruising home by five lengths from All My Loving for a 4-1 triumph.

Victorious trainer Michael Jarvis said: “I thought she would win if she got the trip. She is out of a very fast mare from the Miesque family. She wasn’t really trained last year. We got her going through the winter and started off with her at Wolverhampton.

“She has always shown enormous talent. By Singspiel, she is such a fluent mover. We were considering running her in the Oaks but when it came up soft, having discussed it with Sheik Mohammed and John Ferguson, we thought we’d wait and come here.

“She has a tendency to lean when she comes off the bridle - she did it at Sandown.”

The relief was obvious to Jarvis as he celebrated victory with a huge smile.

He added: “It is a pressure situation. There is a lot of pressure at this meeting - I keep doing it as I enjoy it.”

Philip Robinson commented|: "That was very nice. Early on I was a bit worried - at Sandown she travelled a little bit keen, and I was worried she might do the same thing first time over a mile and a half, but I was delighted as she switched off nicely early on, and when I asked her to start increasing she did everything easily.

"I wanted to get a lead as far as I could before I went on myself, as she hasn't had a lot of racing, and with the crowd and everything you have to worry that she might idle in front. I think she's an extremely nice filly. That's why we were so disappointed that the rain came before the Oaks, as we thought she had a serious chance of winning the Oaks."

Race 2 - Ribblesdale Stakes - Placed Quotes

HENRY, DUNLOP AND ROUGET SATISFIED AFTER RIBBLESDALE

Richard Henry, husband of part-owner Roisin Henry, said of All My Loving, beaten five lengths into second place by Silkwood in the Ribblesdale Stakes: “She stumbled coming out of the stalls and was always on the back foot after that.

“She’s a real trier and ran on great at the end.

“We’ll live to fight another day. It’s up to the trainer (Aidan O’Brien) where we go now.”

Ed Dunlop was very happy was the performance of third-placed Dalvina, who was back to form after a disappointing run in the Oaks at Epsom.

The Newmarket handler said: “We’re much happier today. That puts her back on track.

“I think we were beaten by a very good filly today.

“That run gives her some black type and enhances her value.

“Jamie (Spencer, jockey) said she is still a bit weak.

“We may now give her a break and come back later in the season. Whether or not she stays in training next year, I don’t know. That will be up to the owners.”

Back in fourth was French raider Baroness Richter and her trainer, Jean-Claude Rouget commented: “The pace was too fast for her - our horses are not suited to running like that.

“She has run a promising race.”

THIRD RACE WINNING QUOTES

THE GOLD CUP (GROUP 1)

DOUBLE GOLD FOR YEATS

Last year’s Gold Cup hero Yeats justified 8/13 favouritism when winning Royal Ascot’s famous staying showpiece again by a length and a half under Mick Kinane from the fast-finishing Geordieland.

“We didn’t know what to expect today but Mick rode a great race,” said winning trainer Aidan O’Brien. “He’s a very exciting horse and it would be great to come back here again next year. Everyone wants to be here and in this part of the world the Gold Cup is the big staying race. Last year we didn’t get a clear run before we came here but this season it’s all been good.

“From this day last year the plan was always to come back here again so this is a big relief and I’m delighted for everyone. We went a slightly different route this time because he has had two runs beforehand this time and last year we didn’t have time to do that. He never lost any weight between the two starts.

“There’s no doubt he’s stronger, bulkier and a quicker horse this year. It’s often a worry when they bulk up but we didn’t want to stop him from getting heavier. He travelled and quickened well today and didn’t look like a real stayer.”

Yeats was quoted at just 9/2 for the Melbourne Cup with Boylesports although he is 8/1 with Cashmans and 10/1 with both Stan James and William Hill and O’Brien admitted that the Australian race was under consideration.

“There’s every chance we’d think about bringing him there again and usually after this week we have a talk and put together a plan of big races for all the horses,” added the trainer.

“It’s all up for discussion but I’d think there’s every chance he might not go to Goodwood this time and go to the Irish Leger and then on to Melbourne. But if he gets a ridiculous weight then there is no point heading down there.

“Last year he got beaten in the Irish Leger when we didn’t think he would and he was so-so for a couple of weeks afterwards but we couldn’t put our finger on a reason why. He then came back to form and went to Melbourne but I think we also didn’t quite know how the Australian staying races would be won, we’d know more if we went back again.

“The boss and everyone have a big operation in Australia and it’s close to all of our hearts. It’s not an easy race to win and it’s a long way back!”

Kinane added: “He settled beautifully and I decided to make my move as none of the French horses were going as well as me. I went outside to take up a nice prominent position and I knew my fellow would take three or four lengths out of anything behind me. He's developing into a nice individual, he's matured, he's far better now and he enjoys his racing. The thing with the Melbourne Cup is he will have a big problem with weight, they will put as much as they can on him.

"He had settled beautifully so I decided I would make my move. I didn't think any one of the French horses ahead of me were going well enough to tow me into the race, so I decided to go on the outside. I knew my fellow would take three or four lengths out of whatever was behind me and I thought, if I do that, they won't be able to pick me up.

"He's developed into a beautiful individual. He's matured and felt marvellous, and he's a horse that enjoys his racing. It was nice to put it to bed. If he can stay sound he'll be the one they all have to beat next year.

"They'll pile as much weight as they can on him for the Melbourne Cup, he'll be weighted up to his full ability, and ground conditions there would be a huge factor. Going all that way you would want a bit up your sleeve.”

RACE 3: The Gold Cup Stakes
PLACE QUOTES.

WE’LL AVOID YEATS - OSBORNE

Jamie Osborne indicated that he is in no rush to tackle Yeats again after his charge Geordieland finished second to the dual Gold Cup winner.

But Osborne was still pleased with Geordieland after the Irish staying star defeated him by a length and a half.

The Lambourn trainer said: “He has always threatened to be among the best of the stayers and he has proved himself today.

“He would win a Gold Cup in an ordinary year. We’ve come second to an exceptional stayer.

“We’ll avoid Yeats next time. It makes no sense to keep taking him on.

“He has been worked hard for this race so it is inevitable that he is going to need a bit of time out - the Goodwood Cup is a option.”

Werner Baltromei, trainer of third-placed Le Miracle, said: “It was a brilliant performance - his best ever.

“I will speak to his owner and the jockey and look at the programme book before deciding where he goes next.”

Newmarket-based trainer Neville Callaghan was very pleased with Finalmente’s fourth-placed effort.

He said: “He has run very well. He hasn’t had much luck in handicaps but has proved he is a very decent horse here.

“The winner is a class horse and has a gear or two more than we have but this was still a good run by ours.”

Race 3 - Gold Cup - Other News

NO FAIRYTALE FOR THE SERGEANT

Sergeant Cecil, one of the public’s favourite horses, was never in the hunt in the Gold Cup and eventually came home last of the 14 runners, some 25 lengths adrift of the 13th-placed horse.

His jockey Jimmy Fortune said: “I don’t think there was anything wrong with him today.

“He just ran a very flat race.”

CHERRY MIX

The Godolphin challenger in the Gold Cup, Cherry Mix, was travelling well entering the straight but seemed not to see out the two-and-a-half mile trip, finishing in eighth.

Saeed bin Suroor, the horse’s trainer, commented: “It was a new distance for Cherry Mix today and he raced too keenly all the way.

“I think we will now go back over a mile and a half with him now, probably in an overseas race.”

Race 4 - Britannia Handicap - Winning Quotes

BELL AMAZED AT JOCK SUCCESS

Trainer Michael Bell admitted to being “amazed” after 33/1 shot Eddie Jock recorded a half-length success under top weight in the ultra-competitive Britannia Handicap under Johnny Murtagh.

The Newmarket trainer said: “The first I did when he came back was to check the weight cloth!

“I thought off a rating of 104 it was mission impossible today but he did run well in the Free Handicap and the form from that race has stood up well.

“This horse was a bit of a scamp until we had him gelded - that really turned him inside out and we’ve never looked back since.

“Before he was gelded, he was a bit like me when I was 21!

“He was also in the Jersey Stakes (run yesterday) but we decided to come here as the owners had a box today and also I didn’t really think he could win the Jersey.

“This is only the second horse his owner Colin Gershinson has had with me and I’m very pleased for him.

“We may try and find a Listed race for him now although as Tobosa showed in the Silver Bowl at Haydock - good horses can give weight away in these good handicaps.”

Jockey Johnny Murtagh added: “Although he had top weight he was a course winner at the Shergar Cup last year, which is a big help.

“He is a good horse - that is why he had top weight, although it was a big ask.

“He travelled well and although I had to ride him hard, he responded well and was a good winner on the day.

“Everyone sends their best horses to Royal Ascot and so you always have a chance.

“Michael Bell has done a great job.”

FANSHAWE HAPPY AFTER BIG RUN

James Fanshawe remained positive after seeing Artimino’s unsuccessful bid to follow in Sir Gerard’s hoofprints.

Twelve months after Sir Gerard was the 9-2 winner of the Britannia, Artimino - sent off the 4-1 favourite this afternoon - could only finish fourth.

Newmarket-based Fanshawe said: “He ran really well and you don’t often win this race two years running, do you?

“I haven’t a clue where he goes next but I’m pleased with his run today - that was a big run.”

Sir Michael Stoute, trainer of the second-placed Ea, said: “I’m thrilled with him. Being drawn two was not an advantage with them all going over the other side.”

Ralph Beckett was delighted with third-placed St Philip who bounced back after a slightly frustrating effort at Newmarket in a Listed race last time out.

Beckett said: “I’m thrilled to bits. We needed him to run well today. If he had finished 10th I would have been pleased so to finish third was fantastic.

“He hasn’t quite got home. The other two stayed on that little bit stronger.”

RACE 5: The Hampton Court Stakes
WIN QUOTES.

ZAHAM DIGS DEEP FOR GUTSY WIN

Zaham found a little bit more when it mattered most to score by a head in the Hampton Court Stakes.

Al Shemali and Desert Dew thrust late and with purpose but Zaham dug deep to hold on by a diminishing margin.

It was the Silver Hawk colt’s fifth win in six starts and provided trainer Mark Johnston with his first Royal Ascot victory of 2007.

Johnston said: “We had four chances in the Britannia and hoped that one would get us rolling. It is always a relief to get one.

“Kid Mambo went off at some pace and the race was on from a long way out.

“Luckily, this horse just saves a little bit all the time - which is great. They came to pass him but he found a little bit.

“This horse is quite exceptional in the way he quickens again. At Epsom (where he won a handicap on Derby day) he seemed to change legs and find a new spurt.”

With regard future plans, Johnston added: “Sheikh Hamdan (Zaham’s owner) just said to me that the horse has had a long season and a lot of races.

“Sheikh Hamdan is almost certain to keep him in training next year and he just said to look after him a bit now.

“So, we will give him a break and he will probably step up to a Group race next.”

Sir Michael Stoute, trainer of the fast-finishing runner-up Al Shemali said: “He ran a great race.

“I think he might be suited by a step-up in trip now - he certainly gave that impression, didn’t he?”

Race 6 - King George V Handicap - Winning Quotes

HERON BAY BATTLES TO VICTORY IN KING GEORGE V HANDICAP

Heron Bay, who carries the famous Moller colours, caused a 20/1 upset when taking the final race on Ladies Day, the King George V Handicap, by a head from Filios in a thrilling finish.

The winner looked as if he would have to play second fiddle to the Frankie Dettori-partnered Filios but battled back bravely.

Trainer Geoff Wragg said: “I thought we were beat twice.

“He is a very idle horse - all he wants to do is eat and sleep all the time.

“This horse is improving all the time. He had run well at Haydock last time.

“We will now look at going to Goodwood with him (Gordon Stakes).”

Sponsors Ladbrokes make Heron Bay a 16/1 chance for the St Leger.

Winning jockey Steve Drowne added: “This horse had only had three runs before and was a maiden coming into the race.

“He took a bit of time to pick-up and got there almost too soon.

“I thought Frankie was going to come by me but he really stuck his head out.

“The horse is still a bit green but is improving all the time. When I needed him most he was there for me - he battled back.

“I feel as much for Mr Wragg as anyone - this is where he should be.

“He hasn’t got the numbers nowadays so to come back like this is fantastic.”

CUMANI RUEFUL AFTER NARROW REVERSE

Luca Cumani offered a rueful smile after his charge Filios was just denied by the rallying Heron Bay.

Newmarket-based trainer Cumani said: “I am very proud of the horse - he ran very well.

“If only the handicapper had put him up 10lb not 11lb (for his York win last month) and he might have won! He just got his head in front but it was a tough race.

“Still, he is a brave horse and I am very pleased. He will go for a similar sort of race next time - a mile and a half handicap for three-year-olds.”

Richard Hughes, rider of third-placed Walking Talking, said: “He has run a blinder. He was a little bit immature around the bends but ran a good solid race.”

MILLMAN BEMUSED BY SERGEANT RUN

The stewards ordered Sergeant Cecil to be routine tested after he finished last in the Gold Cup.

The second favourite’s performance was considered by the stewards but having received a report that the trainer was unable to offer any explanation and in the absence of any other relevant information, they decided not to hold an enquiry.

PIGGOTT TO JOIN CARSON, DETTORI, MERCER AND OTHER LEGENDS AT ROYAL ASCOT AS CHAMPION JOCKEYS UNITE FOR EXCLUSIVE PHOTOGRAPH

Photo-call in aid of The Sir Peter O'Sullevan Charitable Trust

At The Races is thrilled to announce that Lester Piggott will attend Royal Ascot tomorrow, as Champion Jockeys of the Flat come together for the first time to be photographed in aid of the Peter O'Sullevan Charitable Trust.

This is the third of four photo-calls at Ascot for the Champions Project, which is bringing together all living Champion Jockeys and Trainers of British Flat and National Hunt Racing in order to produce four unique photographs which will be sold as reproduction and limited edition prints to raise funds for the Peter O'Sullevan Charitable Trust.

Of all the legends of the sport in attendance, Lester Piggott's participation is particularly valued given his recent illness. The racing world will be delighted to welcome Piggott back to Ascot, where he rode an astonishing 116 winners.

The other Champion jockeys in attendance are: Willie Carson, Kevin Darley, Frankie Dettori, Pat Eddery, Joe Mercer, Ryan Moore and Jamie Spencer. Steve Cauthen, Kieren Fallon and Michael Roberts will be photographed separately in specific shoots for the project and their images carried as inserts in the Champion Flat Jockeys picture.

Royal and Society Photographer, Ian Jones, will shoot these specially commissioned, one-off pieces of racing memorabilia. Reproduced signature prints will be sold individually for £99 and as a complete set for £300. There will also be a limited edition run of original, signed prints, priced at £1,250 each and £4,000 for the set. All proceeds from the sale will go to Peter O'Sullevan's Charitable Trust which provides invaluable support to six animal welfare charities. Those wishing to register their interest or to reserve a limited edition, original singed print, can visit www.attheraces.com/champions.

The Peter O'Sullevan Charitable Trust was set up to raise much needed funds for the six welfare concerns to which it is dedicated: The Brooke, Compassion in World Farming, The International League for the Protection of Horses, The Blue Cross, Racing Welfare and The Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre.

Matthew Imi, Chief Executive, ATR, said: “We are enormously pleased that Lester will be at Ascot for the Champions Project. Everyone in racing will be delighted to see him, and a photo of Champion jockeys would not be complete without him. We look forward to seeing everyone at Ascot and most importantly, we are hopeful of raising a large amount of money for those charities which receive vital proceeds from Sir Peter's Trust."

Sir Peter O'Sullevan commented: "This is a wonderful concept and I thank At The Races for their magnificent support, and Ascot for providing such a glorious backdrop. New funds are crucial to our six benefiting charities and this project will make a terrific contribution."

EARLY BETTING NEWS

There are plenty of market movers on day three of Royal Ascot 2007.

The Mark Johnston-trained Majounes Song is into 16/1 (from 25/1) with Boylesports and 20/1 (from 25/1) with Stan James in the Ribblesdale Stakes (3.05pm). Boylesports and Stan James also report money for outsider Lost In Wonder (both firms now go 25/1 from 33/1).

Pricewise selection Montare in the Gold Cup (3.45pm) is already proving popular with punters and the French-trained raider is into 14/1 (from 20/1) with Victor Chandler, 14/1 (from 16/1) with Boylesports, 14/1 (from 20/1) with Stan James and 12/1 (from 20/1) with Cashmans.
