ROYAL ASCOT 2007
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
FIRST DAY, TUESDAY, JUNE 19, 2007

ASCOT GROUND

The going will be unchanged overnight and remains:

Straight Course: Good to Firm
Round Course: Good

Ascot’s Clerk of the Course Chris Stickels said: “We are forecast to receive between seven and nine millimetres of rain overnight. There is also a 30% chance of a storm which could bring further rain.

“The rain band should clear before racing tomorrow. There could still be the odd shower, but nothing significant.

“At this stage, the forecast for Thursday indicates that there could be more persistent rain.”

Commenting on today’s record times in five of the six races, Stickels added: “I think the track is still settling down.

“There was also a strong tail wind from the east which is unusual.

“It was also good, fast ground today.

“We also have to bear in mind that we are only in the second year of the new racing surface at Ascot.”

DETTORI REFERRED TO HRA - KINANE AND BOWMAN BANNED

Frankie Dettori was referred to the HRA by the stewards following his ride on Ramonti in the Queen Anne Stakes. The stewards found Dettori had used his whip with excessive force and frequency and did not give his mount time to respond. The case was referred as the stewards held that the offence required a longer ban than the seven days they could have imposed today.

In the same contest, Mick Kinane was banned for one day (June 30) for his ride on George Washington. Kinane was judged to have used his whip with excessive force.

Hugh Bowman was banned for one day (June 30) for his ride on Hatta Fort in the concluding Windsor Castle Stakes for not giving his mount time to respond.

FIRST DAY CROWD

Today’s crowd at Royal Ascot was 40,191.

This compares to 54,838 in 2006.

Nick Smith, Head of Public Relations at Ascot, commented: “We predicted a crowd of around 40,000 for today.

“This figure is down on what we would normally expect, although we are relaxed about this as we knew that everything was not 100% last year and the opening day of Royal Ascot 2006 after the redevelopment was always going to attract a bumper crowd.

“Looking to the future, the feedback we have received today from members in the Royal Enclosure as well as those in General Admission and the Silver Ring has been almost exclusively positive.

“We are very optimistic that we will return to a normal attendance figure for the opening day in 2008.”

TOTE FIGURES

Today’s totepool on-course cash turnover was £1,378,944, down 15 per cent on the 2006 figure of £1,622,801.

Tote spokesman Damian Walker said: “Given the reduced crowd figure today, the tote have performed very well on course and we’re pleased with our turnover.”

SEVEN ASSEMBLE FOR CHOICE PRINCE
OF WALES’S STAKES

Aidan O’Brien will bid to land one of the few top races to have eluded him when he sends out Dylan Thomas to contest the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot tomorrow.

The Ballydoyle trainer has already won four of the six Group Ones at the Royal meeting with the Golden Jubilee Stakes the other that he hasn’t claimed.

Dylan Thomas is as short as 2-1 for Wednesday’s feature and comes into the race off the back of a second-placed effort in the Tattersalls Gold Cup at The Curragh last month.

But he has already bagged three Group One triumphs and has to come under serious consideration for the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes.

O’Brien’s charge will be seeking to reverse the form of the Tattersalls Gold Cup when he suffered a neck defeat at the hands of the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Notnowcato.

Breeders’ Cup Turf hero Red Rocks was back to something like his best when emerging victorious from the Group Three Gordon Richards Stakes at Sandown in April.

The Galileo colt heads the home challenge, while Manduro is an intriguing contender from the Chantilly yard of top French trainer Andre Fabre.

The progressive five-year-old showed his class when delivering a four-length success in the Earl Of Sefton Stakes at Newmarket and then stepped up to secure a first Group One victory, scoring by an impressive five lengths in the Prix D’Ispahan.

Newmarket handler Michael Jarvis has an interesting new recruit in the shape of Pressing. Formerly trained in Italy, the Soviet Star four-year-old will be having his first start for Jarvis. The colt has already notched a Group Three win and was second in an Italian Group One at Capannelle on his last outing five weeks ago.

Jarvis trained Bob Back, a shock 33-1 winner of this race in 1985.

A choice renewal of the Group One contest sees the field completed by last year’s Derby winner Sir Percy - a disappointment last time out in the Coronation Cup - and the globe-trotting Kandidate.

PREVIEW: QUEEN MARY STAKES

VAUGHAN LOOKING FORWARD
TO FIRST ROYAL ASCOT RUNNER

Newmarket-based trainer Ed Vaughan is eagerly anticipating his first ever runner at Royal Ascot where Fanatical will step out in tomorrow’s Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes.

The Mind Games filly created a favourable impression when she bolted up by a length-and-a-half in a six-furlong maiden for her sex at Newbury on June 9.

She broke well and made all that day, coming home value for a couple of more lengths under jockey Richard Kingscote.

Vaughan has decided to bring her back in trip to five furlongs rather than tackle the six-furlong Albany Stakes on Friday.

He said: “I couldn’t have her any better and I’m hoping she will run a big race. The ground shouldn’t be a problem - her win was on good to firm.

“As she has had a run, I don’t think the drop back in trip will inconvenience her. She did a nice bit of work last Saturday.”

James Eustace has his fingers crossed for rain for his National Stakes second Lady Avenger.

The Newmarket handler said of his Queen Mary runner: “I have to admit the ground worries me.

“Ted Durcan, who has ridden her at home, and Kerrin McEvoy who has ridden her in both of her races, have said to me that she is filly that would prefer a bit of cut. So if there was some rain tonight I would be happy!

“We did have a scare with a foot but she cantered yesterday and had a blow-out this morning and seems fine now. She didn’t miss any intended work. The other thing to say is that her form is working out well.”

Peter Chapple-Hyam has Polar Circle bidding to give him a second success in the five-furlong fillies’ Group 2. She won a Newbury maiden last month and this year’s Derby-winning trainer hopes she can emulate Shining Hour’s 1999 triumph in the Queen Mary.

Chapple-Hyam said: “I’’ve been very happy with her progress since her one run. We will find out where we stand with her on Wednesday. I believe she will run a decent race but she would not want too much rain.”

14 GO FOR GOLD

Last year’s runaway winner Yeats heads a high-class field of 14 in Thursday’s Group One Gold Cup. The six-year-old, who went on to win the 2006 Goodwood Cup, has won both his starts this season and looks set to start one of the hottest favourites of the week.

There will be no more popular winner than the brilliant stayer Sergeant Cecil, who finished fifth in last year’s race but has subsequently claimed victory in the Lonsdale Stakes, Doncaster Cup and Yorkshire Cup at York as well as a Group One success in the Prix du Cadran at Longchamp.

The progressive filly Allegretto lines up after winning the Group Two Henry II Stakes at Sandown last time out with Amanda Perrett’s duo of Bulwark and Tungsten Strike, respectively third and fifth that day, reopposing.

The Godolphin stable bids for a fourth success in the Group One event with the globe-trotting Cherry Mix, who has scored at the highest level in Germany and Italy, while the Neville Callaghan-trained Finalmente steps up from handicap company.

Baddam landed a rare double at Royal Ascot last year in the Ascot Stakes and Queen Alexandra Stakes.

The Jamie Osborne-trained Geordieland finished second in the Yorkshire Cup last month on his seasonal comeback when The Last Drop was pulled up and the 2006 Oaks runner-up Rising Cross came seventh.

Lord Du Sud, winner of the Group Two Prix Vicomtesse Vigier last time out, and the German-trained Le Miracle, who finished fourth that day, add an international dimension to the race as does Montare, winner of last year’s Group One Prix Royal-Oak for trainer Jonathan Pease.

FIRST RACE WINNING QUOTES
COVENTRY STAKES (GROUP 2)

HENRY GALLOPS TO GUINEAS FAVOURITISM

It may be nearly 11 months away but the Aidan O’Brien-trained Henrythenavigator is as short as 5/1 (with Boylesports) for next year’s 2000 Guineas after winning the opening Coventry Stakes in scintillating fashion.

The Kingmambo colt, who was sent off 11/4 favourite, set a course record time of 1 minute 12.46 seconds when scoring by three-quarters of a length.

“We always thought he’d get further than six furlongs yet he won well today,” said O’Brien. “It was a big thing coming here today and we were delighted with how he did it.

“It’s a long way to the Guineas but we’ve always hoped he might be that type of horse. He’s always worked like an exciting horse at home and has stood out from the early horses but we do have some later-maturing types to come through.

“He travelled well in the early paces today and then saw a lot of open spaces but knuckled down well.

“He’s won over seven furlongs and a mile would be no problem - he’s always had a lot of natural speed so the drop back to six was no problem today. There are a lot of choices about where we can go now.”

Place Quotes: Coventry Stakes

ELSWORTH HAPPY WITH ‘RESOLUTE’ FRANC

Trainer David Elsworth put on a brave face after Swiss Franc went down by three-quarters of a length to Henrythenavigator in the Coventry Stakes.

Elsworth said of the second-placed son of Mr Greeley: “It is always frustrating being second. They just got away from us and he was caught for a little bit of toe and then stayed on resolutely.

“He just needed a bit more distance. But he is a cracking little horse with a wonderful temperament.

“He will most probably get a mile next year but we will keep to six or seven for the moment.”

Paul Cole, trainer of the third-placed Luck Money, said: “He gave his chance away by hanging. It might have been a bit firm for him. But he is a progressive horse and ran very well.

“He is a little bit immature and we will give him a bit of time. We will look at Goodwood - probably the Richmond, I would think.”

Tracey Collins, trainer of fourth-placed Pencil Hill, said: “I am very pleased with him. The horse has run a very good race.”

Race 1 - Coventry Stakes - Jockeys’ Reaction to Ground

WHAT A BEAUTY SAY JOCKEYS

The following jockeys were unanimous in praising the ground on the opening day of Royal Ascot 2007 after the running of the first race, the Group Two Coventry Stakes.

Eddie Ahern, rider of Atheer Dubai, said: “Lovely ground, perfect.”

Ryan Moore, rider of Cee Bargara, said: “Good ground.”

Jamie Spencer, rider of Ernie Owl, said: “It’s beautiful.”

Martin Dwyer, rider of Mount Pleasure, said: “I’d call it good. There should not be any excuses for horses on this ground.”

Johnny Murtagh, rider of South Dakota, said: “Beautiful.”

Hugh Bowman, rider of Yem Kinn, said: “Good ground.”

Race 2 - King’s Stand Stakes - Winning Quotes

ANDRETTI ANOTHER AUSSIE WINNER

Miss Andretti followed in the footsteps of previous winners Choisir (2003) and Takeover Target (2006) to land a third King’s Stand Stakes for Australia.

The 3/1 favourite was never in serious danger and powered home in the final furlong to score by a lengths and three quarters from Dandy Man.

Trainer Lee Freedman commented: “You don’t see that too often!

“That was why we brought her over - we wanted the world to see how good she is. That was an awesome display

“I always wanted to win a Group One race in Europe. We’ve come 12,000 miles with her which is always risky - she had to travel and settle it so it was a massive gamble.

“It is marvellous just to come here and compete. Craig (Newitt) has a great record on her and she kept picking up.

“I think I’ll retire now!

“I had been confident but that had eroded over the past week, particularly when I saw the draw.

“I like to be modest, but I wan’t surprised the way she won in the end.

“I have wanted to bring horses over before but have never had the support of the owners, so I am very grateful to everyone connected with Miss Andretti.

“I would also like to thank Nick Smith and the whole team at Ascot.

“She will now go back to the paddocks for a couple of days and she won’t even have a saddle on her. She’ll tell us if she wants to run in the Golden Jubille Stakes on Saturday.

Craig Newitt added: “I was happy to be where I was on her. You can always ride her with confidence.

“She is the best horse in the race and always gives her best.

“I told everyone I wasn’t nervous but I was! There was a fair amount of pressure. It’s a privilege to ride her.”

Part-owner Sean Buckley added: “That was a great effort and training performance.

“The only bad thing is that I’ll never have another horse like her!”

Miss Andretti broke the five-furlong course record at Ascot when recording 57.44s.

Miss Andretti
With three straight victories in 2007 - all at Group One level - Miss Andretti is undoubtedly one of the classiest sprinters on the planet. The six-year-old mare captured the Lightning Stakes, the first leg of the 2007 Global Sprint Challenge, over five furlongs at Moonee Valley on February 3, breaking the course record as she blitzed to a length and a half success over Magnus. Miss Andretti returned to the Melbourne track two weeks later for the second leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, the six-furlong Australia Stakes, and showed blistering acceleration to account for Any Suggestion by a length and a quarter. On her most recent outing in the Newmarket Handicap at Caulfield over six furlongs on March 10, Miss Andretti cracked another course record as she held off Gold Edition by a head, conceding 8lb to the runner-up, with Magnus close up in fourth place. After her latest triumph, trainer Lee Freedman compared Miss Andretti with the great three-time Melbourne Cup heroine Makybe Diva, who he also trained. She won today’s King’s Stand Stakes in style and will probably tum out again for Saturday’s Golden Jubilee Stakes over an extra furlong.

Lee Freedman
Born August 12, 1956, Lee Freedman is one of the most successful Australian racehorse trainers of the past 25 years. Having sent out his first winner, Sitting Bull, at Canberra in 1983, Freedman has gone on to land a total of 119 Group One races. His Interest in racing developed when his father, Tony, retired as a property developer to concentrate on training and breeding. Freedman dropped out of university to run the family stud farm in Yass, NSW, before setting up as a trainer with his brothers Anthony, Richard and Michael, initially at Warwick Farm, Sydney and later at Avenel and Caulfield. He enjoyed phenomenal success in the late 1980s through to the mid-1990s with a host of big race wins. Suspended for four months in 1995 after substituting a horse at a barrier trial, Freedman was subsequently embroiled in the Encosta de Lago affair, in which the top three-year-old he trained tested positive for a prohibited substance but was allowed to run in the 1996 Bill Stutt Stakes, which he won. His fortunes declined between the 1997/98 and 2002/2003 seasons as he saddled only 15 Group One winners compared to 13 in the 1995/1996 season alone. However, he radically changed his training set-up after the 2000 Melbourne Cup, moving to ‘Markdel’, Rye, his purpose built training establishment named after his intellectually handicapped brother Mark and mother Del. More recently, Freedman acquired a two-year-old training facility at Tuerong, Denistoun Park. He trained the phenomenal mare Makybe Diva to land the second and third legs of her Melbourne Cup treble (2004 & 2005), a contest he also took with Tawrrific (1989), Subzero (1992) and Doriemus (1995). Freedman has also won the Caulfield Cup four times (1992 Mannerism, 1994 Paris Lane, 1995 Doriemus, 2003 Mummify), the Golden Slipper four times(1993 Bint Marscay, 1994 Danzero, 1995 Flying Spur, 1996 Merlene) and the Cox Plate twice (1992 Super Impose, 2005 Makybe Diva). He trained his 100th Group One winner with Mummify in the Yalumba Stakes at Caulfield on October 9, 2004, and paid his first visit to Royal Ascot last year with Falkirk, who finished a fine fourth behind compatriot Takeover Target in the King’s Stand Stakes. Miss Andretti’s success in the 2007 Australia Stakes gave Freedman the full set of Victoria Group One races (27 in total). He is married to Janelle and has two daughters, Emma and Georgia.

Craig Newitt
Born March 10, 1985, Craig Newitt was always destined to become a jockey - his parents, Guy Newitt and Virginia Wells, were both jockeys, as were their fathers, Geoff Newitt and Tas Wells. From the age of nine, he mixed the pony club and riding track-work. After being granted an apprenticeship in 2000, Newittt rode his first winner on Kimbra’s Way at Elwick, Hobart, Tasmania, in November 2000, and quickly established himself as a fine rider, landing the Tasmanian jockeys’ premiership in 2000/01. In 2002, he was offered the chance to ride in Melbourne and joined Lee Freedman’s stable, taking the 2002/03 Victorian apprentices’ premiership. His first Group win was on the Freedman-trained True Glo in the 2003 Queensland Guineas at Eagle Farm. In June, 2004, Newitt’s career took a nosedive when he was disqualified by the Racing Victoria stewards for 18 months, after giving false evidence at the Leone Chiara enquiry, which stemmed from an enquiry into Newitt’s ride on the horse seven months earlier. However, he was soon back in the big time after returning to ride in November, 2005, ending the season with four Group One winners, including the Australian Cup with 50/1 chance Roman Arch.

SECOND RACE PLACED QUOTES
KING’S STAND STAKES (GROUP 2)

DANDY DIVIDES AUSSIES

The Tracey Collins-trained Dandy Man prevented a a first four clean sweep for the Australian raiders when finishing runner-up to Miss Andretti in the King’s Stand Stakes.

“He’s run a terrific race,” said a delighted Collins. “He had to come home on his own and you have to be tough to do that.

“He divided the Australian horses and you can’t take anything away from the winner - she’s a four-time Group 1 winner. He probably won’t come back on Saturday, we’re more likely to wait until the July Cup - I just hope these Aussies go back to the southern hemisphere soon.”

Trainer Peter Moody will make a late decision on whether third-placed Magnus runs in Saturday’s Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes. “He just found it all a bit fresh today,” said Moody. “We’ll see how he pulls out after this but we probably won’t make a decision on whether he runs in the Golden Jubilee until 8am on Saturday. He could stay on for the July Cup and Nunthorpe.”

Owner Ron Crabtree added: “It was an exciting run and showed what a great filly Miss Andretti is. It was our first run for a while and he was a bit fresh today, he was sweating in the box beforehand, but he showed his class and stuck on for third. He’s a wonderful horse for punters to back because he is always there or thereabouts.”

Last year’s winner Takeover Target finished fourth and trainer Joe Janiak’s son Ben reported: “I was slightly disappointed but he was run off his feet a bit early on and probably needs further. We’ll see how he comes out of this but the Jubilee has always been his main aim.”

Jockey Jay Ford added: “There were no excuses, he’s just a bit older 12 months on and six furlongs should suit him better on Saturday.”

Reaction: King’s Stand

BENTLEY BISCUIT - JARRED UP

Jockey Nash Rawiller reported that Bentley Biscuit found ground conditions too quick for his liking.

He indicated that it is unlikely Gai Waterhouse’s charge will line up in Saturday’s Golden Jubilee Stakes.

He said: “There is no doubt that the ground is fast and has dried out as the day has gone on and my bloke didn’t appreciate it any stage.

“At no stage did he stretch out. He is jarred up pretty bad. I’m hoping he is here for Saturday but it would need a lot of rain. Otherwise, we’ll wait for the July Cup.”

Mark Wallace is unlikely to bring Benbaun back for Saturday’s Golden Jubilee Stakes - because the Aussies are too good.

Newmarket-based Wallace held his hands up after his six-year-old charge could only finish 12th to record-breaking mare Miss Andretti in the King’s Stand.

Wallace said: “I don’t think there is any point in taking them (the Australian sprinters) on again. They are different gear.

“Benbaun hasn’t run badly. He pulled a front shoe off - what difference that makes, I don’t know.

“Where will he go next? There is a race at Newcastle and the valuable (Listed) race at the Curragh on Irish Derby day which he has won and also come second in.”

RACE 3: St James’s Palace Stakes
WIN QUOTES

ART EFFORT CAPS STUNNING O’BRIEN TRAINING FEAT

Aidan O’Brien saddled the first three home in the St James’s Palace Stakes with winner Excellent Art capping an extraordinary training achievement.

Excellent Art pipped stable-mate Duke Of Marmalade by a neck and fellow Ballydoyle inmate Astronomer Royal was a further length-and-a-quarter back.

John Magnier, husband of co-owner Sue Magnier, summed it up when he commented:: “It is quite a training performance.”
Jamie Spencer gave a stellar performance in the saddle on Excellent Art, who met trouble in running in the French 2000 Guineas last month.

Magnier added: “He was maybe unlucky in France and was the unknown horse in the race, I guess.

“He had quite a good record as two-year-old. He won the Mill Reef - Neville Callaghan did a very good job with him.

“Paul Shanahan thought we should buy him (towards the end of 2006) and we went along with his suggestion and that is how it happened.”

Spencer said: “He travelled very smoothly and my only concern through the race was that the pace was a bit too steady for him.

“But I got a nice run around the fence and once a gap opened he quickened impressively into it.

“He was running at sprint distances last year. In France he was a little bit fresh but today he was nice and relaxed. In France, being unlucky he didn’t get to have a hard race.

"I felt in France I did what was best for the horse on the day. After the race, I felt he would have won easily if he had got the gaps. Today's he's proved it.
“Aiden was confident and that the horse had improved and he was very happy: you take that on board.
“Excellent Art is a very exciting colt and I am just pleased to be part of the team this afternoon. This fellow goes on anything and is a powerful compact colt.

"He settled lovely towards the rear, they didn't go quick, which was my only concern, and once he got the split a furlong out he was always going to win, and he won snugly in the end.

"I always feel that this race is the race that counts as far as three-year-old milers [are concerned]. All the Guineas winners come here and it's the best one who wins this race, and I think this fellow has proven it today.

"He's a smashing horse to deal with and I'm pleased and thankful that Aidan O'Brien and his team allowed me to ride the horse. They had confidence in me to leave me on him and I got the job done."

THIRD RACE QUOTES
ST JAMES’S PALACE STAKES (GROUP 1)

REBEL ONLY FIFTH

Even-money favourite Cockney Rebel finished fifth after hanging left in the St James’s Palace Stakes and is set to next appear in the Prix Jacques Le Marois at Deauville.

“He hanged a lot and I couldn’t ride the horse properly,” said jockey Olivier Peslier.

Trainer Geoff Huffer added: “He tends to hang left, we don’t know why he does but we’ll look at going back to a straight track with him. We’ll think about the Jacques Le Marois.”

Owner Phil Cunningham said: “I’m absolutely gutted but I would be if I’d been beaten in a seller at Folkestone as I’m a racing man. This horse owes us absolutely nothing.”

FOURTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
QUEEN ANNE STAKES (GROUP 1)

RAMONTI ENDS GODOLPHIN GROUP 1 BLUES

The Godolphin stable enjoyed a British first Group 1 success in nearly two years when Ramonti fought back to beat Jeremy by a short-head under in-form jockey Frankie Dettori in the Queen Anne Stakes.

“They went by me but I knew he’d stay further and come back.” said Dettori. “I had to get serious so I might get a suspension.

“It’s been a while since we won a Group 1 in England and I’m thrilled for the boss. Of our Godolphin runners this week I thought this was our main chance of winning.

“I didn’t know so much about the horse in the Lockinge but I subsequently spoke to my friend Endo Botti who had ridden him in Italy and he told me to ride him like a tough horse.

“It’s very hard at Group 1 level to make all the running but from three out I tried to stretch them but Jeremy passed me by a length. We came back and as I passed the line and I thought maybe I’ve won but couldn’t really tell.”

Trainer Saeed bin Suroor added: “We needed that badly - it’s taken us a long time to win a Group 1, it’s a bit up and down like a stock market! He was a bit unlucky when he was second at Newbury but everything was better for him today and Frankie gave him a great ride. We had a feeling that he was good enough to win today.”

It was Godolphin’s first British Group 1 win since Punctilious landed the 2005 Yorkshire Oaks and racing manager Simon Crisford said: “That was a vintage Frankie special. Group 1 wins are always fantastic and that’s what we aim for and we love racing here more than anywhere. When you perform at the level we do, it’s frustrating if you’re not winning the big races and we’re lucky to have a very understanding patron.

“We were being realistic coming into the race and you could pick holes in his form - we valued the Lockinge less than this race - and there was also George Washington there. When we bought this horse we didn’t anticipate that he’d be winning this, we thought of him more as an overseas horse.

“We haven’t considered a programme for him, he could step up in distance or could go for something like the Jacques Le Marois.”

The winning time of 1 minute 37.21 seconds was a course record.

Race 4 - Queen Anne Stakes - Placed Quotes

STOUTE AND ROHAUT HAPPY

Trainer Sir Michael Stoute was happy with the performance of Jeremy in the Queen Anne Stakes, beaten a short-head by Ramonti, although he believed the colt could have won had he kept to a true line in the final furlong.

The master of Freemason Lodge said: “I thought he would win when he took it up but then he just lugged to the right.

“I would say that was the best run of his career.

“I’m not sure where we will go next with him. He seems equally effective over seven furlongs or a mile.”

A further short-head back in third was Turtle Bowl and his trainer Francois Rohaut was very satisfied.

The French handler said: “I am very pleased.

“That was my first Royal Ascot runner and it was like a dream. Turtle Bowl has run a hell of a race.

“He will now go for the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville.”

RACE 3: St James’s Palace Stakes & Race 4 Queen Anne Stakes
AIDAN O’BRIEN QUOTES

O’BRIEN ON GEORGE - AND THAT 1-2-3

Aidan O’Brien was more than satisfied with the comeback performance of George Washington in the Queen Anne Stakes.

The Danehill colt, now four, was returning to action after initially being retired to stud duties and finished a close-up fourth to Ramonti.

Ballydoyle trainer O’Brien said: “He ran a great race. He was a bit fresh in his race early on but he was coming home really well. He needs plenty of early pace in his races to help him relax.

“That was very encouraging. You would be very encouraged watching that. He has all options open. Mick was delighted with him.”

O’Brien also reflected on the St James’s Palace Stakes in which he saddled the first three home.

He said: “We were delighted with that. They are three very good colts and we always knew that.

“But it is always hard to know what is between them, especially when they don’t work together.

“There are plenty of races for them - we will get them home and see.”

Race 5 - Ascot Stakes - Winning Quotes

HOUSE COMES GOOD

Full House improved on his fourth place 12 months ago to collect the Ascot Stakes in great style. The eight-year-old stayed on resolutely to score by half a length from Juniper Girl with Som Tala a short-head back in third.

A delighted trainer Paul Webber said: “That was terrific.

“He loves this place and this ground. Actually, I was gutted when the declarations were made because my other entry, Tribe, was balloted out!

“The winner actuallly went up 8lb before this race after he won last time - not really very professional of me! But he has really come forward over the last six weeks.

“Full House is a wonderful horse. He will do anything for you, you just have to let him take his time.

“I suppose we better have a look at the Queen Alexandra Stakes her on Saturday for him now. We will also look at the Northumberland Plate.

“This is our second winner here after Ulundi won a few years back (2002 Wolferton Stakes). We just can’t win at Cheltenham!”

SECOND AND THIRD EYEING UP
ALEXANDRA RETURN

Trainer Michael Bell is considering backing up his Ascot Stakes second Juniper Girl in Saturday’s Queen Alexandra Stakes.

Mick Channon will also give thought to a Royal Ascot return this weekend for third-placed Som Tala.

Bell said: “She has ran a blinder. She is very effective on soft ground but still - we are delighted with that.

“She is in the Queen Alexandra. We will see how she comes out of this. If she is fine and there is some rain we may take our chance.”

Channon commented: “He has done nothing wrong. He has come there to win but has been beaten fair and square.

“He is in the Queen Alexandra. We will see how he takes this and then have a chat.”

RACE 6: The Windsor Castle Stakes
WIN AND PLACE QUOTES

OSBORNE STRIKES IN WINDSOR CASTLE

Drawnfromthepast gave trainer Jamie Osborne a second victory in the Windsor Castle Stakes when he held off Kingsgate Native to score by a head.

Osborne also triumphed in the five-furlong Listed race back in 2001 thanks to Irony.

Osborne said: “You never come here thinking you are going to have a winner but we look to have a nice batch of two-year-olds and he has always had a bit of quality.

“He looked like he was going to be okay and I had the nerve to name him Drawnfromthepast which is the title of my wife’s exhibition which opened in Dover Street yesterday so this is perfect timing!

“Irony winning was very memorable and a turning point. This season we have tried to have a little bit of a resurrection with the two-year-old training career and it has worked. Now we have got to keep it going.

“We had him in the Norfolk Stakes but he won’t run in that. I think he will go six furlongs now.

Kingsgate Native ran a great race to finish second on his debut and trainer John Best said: “That was unbelievable. We knew we had a good one and he had been due to run at York at the weekend but it was called off.

“He was only beaten by the lack of a run and he’s been declared for the Norfolk Stakes on Thursday and if he’s fine he’ll run. George Baker is fed up as he has to ride at Lingfield that day!”

GLOBAL SPRINT CHALLENGE LEADERBOARD

Miss Andretti at the moment has a stranglehold on the 2007 Global Sprint Challenge following her wins in the Timbercorp Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley on February 17 and the Coolmore Lightning Stakes at Moonee Valley on February 3.

Miss Andretti is now the leading contender to claim the US$1 million bonus. She is set to contest both the King's Stand Stakes and the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot this week.

The bonus is on offer to any horse that contests Global Sprint Challenge races in all four countries - the series moves on to Japan and Hong Kong after Royal Ascot - and wins Group One races in three of those countries.

US$1 MILLION CHAMPIONSHIP BONUS

Again in 2007, the Global Sprint Challenge champion will be eligible to win a US$1 million bonus for its connections, provided the champion has competed in GSC races in all four countries. To win the championship bonus the horse must also win a minimum of three of the GSC Group 1 races in three different countries.

CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY

The Champion Sprinter trophy will be awarded to the horse that accumulates 42 points or above in a single season, and participates in challenge races in at least three countries.

SCORING SYSTEM

The Global Sprint Challenge points will be awarded as follows:
Win 10 points
Second 5 points
Third 4 points
Fourth 3 points
Fifth 2 points
Any starter 1 point

Double points will apply for horses competing in Group 1 races outside their racing jurisdiction.

Racing jurisdictions are: Europe and United Arab Emirates (Domestic challenge races run by Ascot), Hong Kong & Macau (Domestic challenge races run by HKJC), Japan (Domestic challenge races run by JRA), Australia and New Zealand (Domestic challenge races run by Racing Victoria Limited)

Horses trained outside these jurisdictions (including North and South America, Africa and other Asian jurisdictions) qualify for double points throughout.

GLOBAL SPRINT CHALLENGE CHAMPION

The Global Sprint Challenge champion is determined by the horse with the highest number of points from challenge races listed in this booklet and satisfies the following:

• accumulates 42 points or above in a single season
• participates in challenge races in at least three countries

It is important to note that in some years there may not be a Global Sprint Challenge champion. The champion in 2005 was Cape of Good Hope (HK) and in 2006 is Takeover Target (AUS).

The Global Sprint Challenge champion horse also identifies the winning owner, trainer and jockey. Where the challenge champion horse is ridden by more than one jockey, the jockey with the highest number of points receives the trophy, or in the event of a tie, the jockey with the highest prize money earnings.

In the event of two horses each sharing highest points at the end of the challenge year, the championship will be decided on a count-back of results with ‘away’ results counting ahead of home results.

Throughout the Global Sprint Challenge events, tables are to be published identifying the relative points accumulated by horses competing for challenge champion status.

If a challenge champion horse is sold during the course of the challenge season, the winning owner will be recognised as the owner of the horse at the finale of the annual challenge in Hong Kong.

In the case of a dead-heat between horses for 1st or other places up to 5th place, points will be shared from the combined total of points of the winning order of the horses concerned.

If a points earning horse is disqualified from a challenge race, either on race day or subsequently, challenge championship points will be allocated on the revised official result.

In the event of a postponement of a challenge race to a new date/venue in the same calendar year, points earned from the revised race date will still count towards the Global Sprint Challenge.

Each challenge event is run under the jurisdiction of each Jockey Club, Racing Association or appropriate race organiser, whose National or State rules of racing constitute the jurisdiction under which each race takes place.

GLOBAL BET AT ROYAL ASCOT

Punters around the world will be able to bet directly into the UK tote’s pools on both the St James’s Palace Stakes and Gold Cup at Royal Ascot this week, as part of the new Global Bet initiative.

Developed under the auspices of the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA), the Global Trifecta Bet - picking the first three horses home in the correct order - operates as a single, global pool, in a process commonly known as ‘co-mingling’. There are 12 countries on four continents currently involved and this number is set to grow as the year goes on.

The first Global Bet race was the Prix de Diane Hermes at Chantilly on June 10, when the pool reached 57,935 euros, with a dividend of £1,768 - some £834 more than if the pool had consisted only of UK bets. Four British punters were left smiling broadly after the French Classic.

David Craven, totepool Managing Director, said: “The initiative has enjoyed a great start and we are hoping to consolidate on that success with these two races at Royal Ascot where we will be hosting pools.

“Royal Ascot is a truly international race meeting, so it is a natural progression to take tote betting onto the global stage. With such prestigious races, we would anticipate the pool betting to be at least double what we would normally expect for a Trifecta at the Royal Meeting.”

Along with the UK, France, Germany, Ireland, Holland, Spain, Russia, Switzerland, Brazil, Trinidad, South Africa and the US will be involved in the Global Bet at Royal Ascot, and British punters will be able to make their Trifecta selections online.
