VODAFONE EXTENDS GOODWOOD SUPPORT

Goodwood today announces that Vodafone is to extend its support of racing at the West Sussex course for a further period of three years until 2005.

Already Goodwood's longest-standing commercial supporter, Vodafone will celebrate twenty years of sponsorship by branding all seven races on Saturday, 2 August, the fifth, final and most popular day of the Glorious Goodwood race week.

As a result of the new agreement, the value of the Group 1 Vodafone Nassau Stakes will be increased by £70,000 to £200,000, while the Vodafone Stewards' Cup, the day's showpiece sprint handicap, will rise by £15,000 to £100,000, setting two new prize money records.

The quality of the race programme receives a further boost with the introduction of an entirely new fourteen furlongs 'listed' race, for mares and fillies only, which will have a prize fund of £35,000.

Commenting on the sponsorship, Goodwood's Chairman, His Grace, the Duke of Richmond said, "Vodafone's continued support underpins the quality of the final day of our festival meeting which, with a Group 1 event, two listed races, a highly competitive handicap and record prize money provides a fitting finale to what promises to be a fascinating five days of racing."

The announcement of Vodafone's commitment follows the highly successful Vodafone Derby meeting at Epsom Downs.

Sir Christopher Gent, Chief Executive, Vodafone Group Plc said, "Horse racing has always played an important role in our sports sponsorship portfolio and in Goodwood, which is recognised as one of the most beautiful racecourses in the world, we have found a day's racing which not only attracts a significant amount of media coverage but is also an ideal opportunity to entertain valued customers and suppliers."

JOCKEY CLUB ANNOUNCES PLANS TO SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE TESTING OF RIDERS

The Jockey Club announced today that jockeys riding in Britain will soon be subject to an expanded programme of routine testing. The revised programme, which gets underway later this month, will include a significant increase in the number of random tests as well as the introduction of breathalyzer tests and will open up the way for target testing of jockeys.

The testing of riders in Britain was introduced in 1994 and since then, 1494 tests have been carried out for the Jockey Club by UK Sport. UK Sport have collected and analysed about 150 samples each year, but within the next few years and from the same budget, the Jockey Club intends to increase the number of urine tests to around 1000 a year (with up to 2000 breathalyzer tests) by transferring its contract for collection and analysis to Medscreen Ltd, whose world wide client base includes government contracts.

Dr Michael Turner, the Jockey Club's Chief Medical Adviser, said today: "We are delighted to be able to announce this expansion of our dope testing programme. The measures will serve to increase confidence in the safety of British racing. The motive for expanding our testing programme is not because of a need to tackle a particular problem; rather, it is to use our financial resources in the most cost-effective way to further increase safety levels in a very high-risk sport.

"By aiming our primary testing programme at those substances that impair performance or judgement, we can conduct a more effective and thorough testing programme as well as achieving a much faster turn around of results. The move to Medscreen will also open up the way for the introduction of target testing in competition, the absence of which in a safety critical sport is arguably a weakness. Target testing would enable us to ensure that all professional jockeys are subjected to regular testing.

"We are grateful for the work conducted by UK Sport on behalf of the Jockey Club, however, it is now necessary for us to move on in order to achieve our targets.

"Most people agree that in racing it is the horse's ability which is the primary factor in determining the result of a race, consequently, racing is not comparable with other non-equine sports. Our needs have more in common with the occupational screening of employees working in safety sensitive jobs (pilots, police, armed forces, train drivers etc). British racing already has a comprehensive anti-doping programme for horses and the expanded testing programme for riders can only help to improve levels of safety and integrity."

TIMEFORM CHARITY DAY IS TOPS AT YORK

With record prize money of £178,000, the 33rd Timeform Charity Day at York – the second day of the June Meeting on the Knavesmire – should confirm its status as one of the most popular and well-known day's racing in the U.K.

On a day full of quality, the highlights of the seven-race programme which begins at 2.00 p.m. are The William Hill Trophy (a £75,000 Showcase Handicap over six furlongs – Britain's most valuable sprint handicap for three-year-olds), the 16th running of The Queen Mother's Cup (one of the foremost races in Europe for lady amateur riders), The Cadogan Silver Salver Handicap Stakes, The Daniel Prenn Royal Yorkshire Rated Stakes, The Charles Henry Memorial Handicap Stakes, The Leonard Sainer E.B.F. Maiden Stakes and The Michael Sobell Maiden Stakes.

Since the inaugural Timeform Charity Day in 1971, over £3 million has been raised for various charities, principally Macmillan Cancer Relief. The figure represents the combined proceeds of the racedays and Timeform's eve-of-meeting dinner at the racecourse that features Timeform's Racing Personality of the Year Award. Last year's recipient of this prestigious prize was York's former clerk of the course and manager, John Smith, who retired at the end of last season.

Amongst the items to be auctioned at the dinner are a Bronze of Rock Of Gibraltar – last season's champion racehorse, who was jointly owned by Sir Alex Ferguson as well as trips to the 2004 Dubai World Cup, the Irish Guineas Meeting at the Curragh (including a visit to the famous Ballydoyle stables and Coolmore Stud), next year's Monaco Grand Prix, not to mention a selection of racing memorabilia.

The afternoon's full-colour racecard will feature a special racecard competition, held in association with ‘Go Racing in Yorkshire' on the nine Yorkshire courses this season. The overall competition winner at the end of the year will receive a holiday for two in Spain, courtesy of Planet Air and Ripon Travel.

Friday's opening race at 2.10 p.m., The Blacks – The People For Property Stakes, is a handicap contest for sprinters, sponsored for the second year by the York-based chartered surveyors, while leading betting exchange company, sportingoptions.co.uk support a race for the first time at York, in the form of the afternoon's Showcase Handicap, a contest for sprinters over six furlongs.

Regular sponsors, Batleys Cash & Carry return to the Knavesmire to support a race in aid of the company's fund-raising efforts for charity, assisted by several media, show business and sporting personalities. This year's special guest will be Jane Tomlinson who has received many prestigious awards for her well publicised fund raising activities despite her own terminal illness.

Arriva Trains Northern sponsor The Rous Selling Stakes to celebrate the popular ‘Back A Winner By Train' scheme for racegoers travelling by train to selected northern racecourses, including York. The Colliergate Rated Stakes, a handicap contest for stayers, completes Friday's entertainment highlights.

A couple of giant screens will assist racegoers to enjoy even more of the action on both days, while the ‘Punters Panel' – part of the Tote Partnership Initiative with the course – takes place prior to racing in the winners' enclosure, with selected guests previewing the racing. York's fully-supervised crèche facility, ‘Colts & Fillies' is available on Saturday.

The £20 million Ebor Stand, officially unveiled at last month's opening May Meeting, proved to be a huge success and with Timeform Charity Day a major draw, even more racegoers look set to be introduced to the delights of racing at York.

FRANCE TO THE FORE

Apprentice rider, Suzanne France, who has struck up a successful partnership with Efidium, is the Cocked Hat Apprentice of the Month for May.

Based with Brandsby (near York) trainer Neville Bycroft, Suzanne, aged 22, partnered Efidium to a couple of victories last month - at Redcar and Doncaster. The five-year-old gelding, trained by Bycroft, had provided Suzanne with her first success as a rider when winning a race for professional and amateur lady riders at Ripon in late April.

The award is supported by Cocked Hat Farm Foods Ltd. of Ripon, as part of the company's involvement in the Northern Flat Jockeys' Championship - The Cock O' The North Award, which up to 7 June is lead by the current northern champion, Kevin Darley with 46 winners so far this season.
