VODAFONE DERBY MEETING
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
EPSOM DOWNS, SATURDAY, JUNE 7, 2003
HUGE CROWD FLOCKS TO EPSOM
Stephen Wallis, Managing Director of Epsom Downs Racecourse said: “The crowd must be around 100,000, if not more. This is the optimum crowd size for Vodafone Derby Day. The grandstands are full and the Hill is packed but comfortable and safe. I have never sen the Hill square so crowded.
“There is a wonderful atmosphere and we have seen a great race - everybody seems to have had a lot of fun.
“Giving the Grandstand back to the Grandstand racegoers (rather than having a large part of it as a Club Enclosure) has seen a huge surge in Tote turnover.”
TOTE TURNOVER OVER £1 MILLION FOR FIRST TIME
On-course cash Tote pool turnover topped £1 million for the first time on Vodafone Derby Day, reaching £1,070,125, an 18.7% increase on the 2002 level of £901,529.
Friday’s turnover was £487,669, up 31.6% from the 2002 amount of £370,4764.
The two-day total was £1,557,794 (+22.47%) from £1,271,993 in 2002.
WINNER QUOTES - THE OWNER
VODAFONE DERBY
SUHAIL HAPPY
The winning owner Saeed Suhail was crying as he watched the race, having been very nervous according to a friend, who added that the owner deserved his success, having spent a lot on bloodstock.
“I am really happy”, declared the owner.
FRANKIE DETTORI SAYS HE HAS NEVER SEEN EPSOM BUSIER
Frankie Dettori commented on the crowd: “This is the first time that I have seen the Downs really, really full. I rode in the first race and the atmosphere is electric. Both sides of the track are full of people - all screaming and shouting and having a great time.
“The weather is really helping and it is great to ride when the atmosphere is like this. Let’s get a winner now!”
Dettori, talking about his mount Graikos in the Vodafone Derby, said: “Because I am on an outsider, I will probably take my time and let the big boys have a good of scrap.
“With a bit of luck, if they have gone a bit too fast and had a battle in front it might suit me.
“It is a great shame to come into a big race like this and not be on the favourite but that is the way things go. We will come back next year with a better horse. But we will have to do what we can with Graikos first.
“The horse I have been most impressed with is the Aga Khan’s horse - Alamshar. He is wonderfully tough and reminds me of Sinndar - steadily progressing through the ranks. John Oxx and Johnny Murtagh know exactly how to win the Derby - he is the horse I would like to be on.
WINNING ENCLOSURE VODAFONE DERBY QUOTES
“ONE OF THE GREAT EPSOM RIDES”
“That was one of the really greatest rides you will ever see at Epsom,” enthused Sir Michael Stoute after Kieren Fallon had driven Kris Kin to a one length victory over The Great Gatsby, giving the trainer his third success in the premier classic (Shergar and Shahrastani) and the jockey his second, following Oath four years ago.
“It is a great thrill, maybe the greatest of all, to win the Derby,” Sir Michael went on. “I have been lucky enough to have had some very good horses and to have won some big races all round the world, but there is something extra special about winning the Derby. It is the best of all.
“It has been a long time since 1986 (when Shahrastani won), so long that I have almost forgotten about it ! We have had some ups and downs in the years since then and I am delighted for Kris Kin’s owner Saeed Suhail, who has been a great supporter of ours over the years and has had his share of disappointments as well.
“His Beat All was third in the race and then King’s Best had to be withdrawn on the morning of the race after his win in the 2,000 Guineas because of injury.
“And as it was his £90,000 for the supplementary fee, I wanted the horse at least to run very well to justify all that money.
“I had originally entered Kris Kin for the Derby, but took him out last autumn and put him in the French Derby because I thought that Chantilly would suit him better than Epsom. So when we decided to supplement him after he had won at Chester we had to pay to put him in again!
“He has always been a progressive colt. He won his second start as a two-year-old and then won the Dee Stakes at Chester when Kieren got off him to ride Big Bad Bob. Kris Kin is a very unimpressive worker at home which is why Kieren chose not to ride him at Chester.
“During the race I was happy to see that Kieren had been able to get him into a good position by the top of the hill, and then when he started to improve coming down the hill I was getting a bit hopeful. Two furlongs out I was sure he was going to run a big race and get pretty close, but it was not really until near the end that I realised he was going to win. It was one of the great rides round Epsom.”
WINNER QUOTES - KIEREN FALLON
VODAFONE DERBY
EVERYTHING WENT
HIS WAY
Kieren Fallon said: “Everything went his way - he travelled good in his race and he was able to quicken.
“There was a little trouble at the top of the hill, where you usually get it when the horses cross over from outside - it got a bit tight - I was worried there but I let him find himself and he was OK. He got a couple of bumps but was man enough to hold his position when it got very rough.
“It is a great thrill and I have a lot of people to thank for being here today - starting with the likes of Jimmy FitzGerald and Jack Ramsden and then on to Henry Cecil who taught me everything, then on to the job I have today which is a dream job, with good horses to ride.
“It is fantastic. I was quietly confident - this horse went by me quickly at Chester - I won the same trial (Philip Leverhulme Dee Stakes) on Oats (1999) and he went on to win the Derby.
“Kris Kin is quite a lazy horse at home and he does not show you everything but when you get him on the track he is a totally different horses - we know how good he is now.
“I was always riding the horse - if the horse was running I was riding - at least I was hoping I was and that is the way it worked out.
“Coming down the home turn to the straight, I knew when I dug deep he was going to answer. He found another gear and has done it well.
“A classic was one of my goals this year - a championship was never on the agenda as such.”

STOUTE VODAFONE DERBY PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES
Winning trainer Sir Michael Stoute admitted that Kris Kin’s exploits have come as a pleasant surprise to him.
Saeed Suhail’s Kris S colt, bred by the Niarchos Family’s Flaxman Holdings, was originally entered as a yearling in the Vodafone Derby, but taken out of the race earlier this year before being supplemented again at a cost of £90,000 on Monday.
“He’s kept surprising me because he’s one of the laziest horses that I’ve ever trained - he saves it for the raceday, I’d bracket him with Shardari in that respect,” said Stoute.
“I had him in the English Derby then took him out of the race to save Saeed a few quid because I thought France would suit him better than Epsom. But he keeps surprising and it’s always a wonderful thing to win one of the world’s great races.”
But Suhail admitted that it was not a tough decision to pay the £90,000 supplementary entry fee. “It was not hard to pay this to run in the Derby,” said the owner.
Stoute added: “We had to go to the Dee Stakes to see where we were going but his work is so unimpressive that Kieren picked the other horse there.
“I was told by Clare Balding that he was one of the best-backed horses of the day but I felt that was the Kieren factor.
“I loved the fact that Kieren got the horse into an ideal position at the top of the hill. Two furlongs out I felt sure that he would win but I wasn’t so sure at the one furlong marker. I gave him a big roar and I think that made the difference!
“He had a pick of grass on Thursday night then took a lame step and trotted up lame but there was no heat anywhere, an hour later he was fine.”
FIFTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
VODAFONE DERBY (GROUP 1)
FALLON VODAFONE DERBY PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES
Champion jockey Kieren Fallon was winning his second Vodafone Derby following Oath in 1999 and said: “I wanted to keep Johnny Murtagh and Michael Kinane in my sight and I had a good position going round Tattenham Corner. I was lucky to pick up and win.
“To be honest I didn’t know too much about this horse, he quickened by me quite impressively at Chester,” said Fallon. “When he gets to the track he is a totally different horse.
“At the top of the hill when the high-draw horses cross over, we all came together as we did yesterday in the Oaks. It was very rough, he got a couple of bumps but he was strong enough. I knew when I dug deep he was going to answer. He’s done it well and found another gear.
“Winning a classic was one of my goals this year, a championship was never on the agenda.”
FIFTH RACE PLACED QUOTES
VODAFONE DERBY (GROUP 1)
THE GREAT GATSBY IS NO FAIRYTALE
Pat Eddery made a gallant effort to give Aidan O’Brien a third successive Vodafone Derby success aboard The Great Gatsby but the Sadler’s Wells colt failed by a length to hold off the challenge of Kris Kin.
John Magnier, whose wife Sue’s colours were carried by the runner-up, said: “You were just hoping that you might get there but the best horse won the race.”
Eddery added: “I couldn’t have asked for better. I could have done with a little bit softer ground but he’s run a great race and I can’t complain.”
John Oxx, trainer of third-placed Alamshar, would not fear taking on Kris Kin again. “We’re as happy as we can be with result and there’s not much between them, it’s just depends on who has improved the most on the day,” said the Curragh-based handler.
“He (Kris Kin) just kicked and found a length more than we did today. He (Alamshar)’s still improving physically and today’s race was a big experience for him.”
David Elsworth, trainer of fourth-placed Norse Dancer, said: “He was left quite a lot to do but saw the race out well. One’s a little frustrated in a way - there’s only one Derby and it’s the only chance that he’d get. I’m disappointed with the result but delighted that the horse has run so well.”
Norse Dancer’s rider Richard Quinn said: “I felt two out that he’d get there but he ran a nice race and had a good clear run.”
Philip Robinson, who partnered Dutch Gold to finish sixth, said: “He ran a good race on ground he didn’t like.”
Kevin Darley, who finished ninth on Magistretti, said: “There was a bit of trouble at the top of the hill and he didn’t recover.”
Trip “A bridge too far” - Smullen
Refuse to Bend, the 11/4 favourite, failed to see out the trip: that was the verdict of big race pilot Pat Smullen.
“He possibly didn’t stay; I’d say that’s the biggest factor,” said Smullen when asked for the reasons why the Sadler’s Wells colt didn’t make the frame.
“He felt well and down the hill I thought I was in with a shot of winning. But it was probably a bridge too far.”
Conversely, Alamshar had no problem getting the trip according to Johnny Murtagh.
“I was in between a few and he probably didn’t travel as well as I thought he would,” said Murtagh.
“He seemed to stay on very well. There was a worry about him staying but I think all he did today was stay.”
Pat Eddery was thrilled with the performance of the runner-up, The Great Gatsby.
“I couldn’t have asked for better,” said Eddery. “I could have done with a little bit softer ground but he’s run a great race and I can’t complain.”
Jamie Spencer was similarly pleased with the display of outsider Balestrini.
“He’s ran a cracker to finish fifth although it would have been nice to have got closer,” said Spencer.
“Two out, I thought he would definitely be in the three but he’s a 66-1 shot so what do you expect.”
Kevin Darley, rider of ninth-placed Magistretti, said:”He got into trouble at the top of the hill and never recovered.”
Simon Crisford, racing manager to Godolphin, said of Graikos: “He wasn’t sighted, simple as that.”
Michael Kinane, who rode the 16th horse Brian Boru, said::”He didn’t really run that well. It’s disappointing.”
MORE DERBY JOCKEYS’ QUOTES
NUREYEV LAME - DROWNE
Prince Nureyev, who finished last in the Vodafone Derby, was found to be lame after the race.
-
Jockey Steve Drowne confirmed: “He finished lame. He just slipped in the last part of the bend and I think he has done muscles behind.
“He was giving me a lovely feel until that and would have run respectably.”
Jimmy Fortune, rider of 11th-placed Sumerland, was happy with his mount overall but added: “He was hanging left quite badly in the straight and possibly didn’t handle the track very well. But I think he has run a decent race. He is a better horse on very soft ground.”
Frankie Dettori, jockey of Godolphin’s hope Graikos, said: “He ran like a 25-1 shot. He finished eighth, ran alright but was outclassed.”
KRIS KIN WIN A TRIUMPH FOR
GORDON-WATSON
Arguably no-one was more happy with Kris Kin’s Vodafone Derby victory than Charlie Gordon-Watson, the bloodstock agent who purchased the Kris S colt for $275,000 at Keeneland on behalf of owner Saeed Suhail.
Kris Kin is the first Derby winner the London-based agent has bought.
Gordon-Watson beamed: “It is a dream come true. When I set out 17 years ago as an agent, the ambition was obviously to buy a Derby winner - because it’s the world’s greatest race. It’s the pinnacle.
“With this particular owner, we have always set out to buy classic horses. We’ve had King’s Best, who won the 2,000 Guineas, Dilshaan - he was a Group 1 winner - and Beat All who was third in the Derby but bruised his foot a week before the race.
“Kris Kin was actually bought from Lane’s End and bred by Niarchos.”
Lane’s End is owned by Will Farish, whose colours were covered to victory by Casual Look in yesterday’s Vodafone Oaks.
MORE DERBY JOCKEY QUOTES
TRY AGAIN ‘A LEGER HORSE’
Darryll Holland, rider of seventh-placed Let Me Try Again, reckons his mount will be suited to a St Leger tilt in September.
Holland said: “I think that he’s a Leger horse, basically. Today, I had a good position early - I was fourth - but then I got murdered at the top of the hill.
“I got shuffled back but he ran on to be seventh.”
Eddie Ahern felt the drying ground turned against his big-race ride Shield, who finished 10th.
He said: ”In the space of two hours the ground dried out an awful lot, which didn’t suit my horse.
“He was a little bit squeezed at the start, had lovely room all the way through following Johnny Murtagh - no excuse with traffic problems.
“But coming down the hill, I think it was just that the ground was a bit quick. And in the straight, he was more or less going up and down on the spot.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE ONE
VODAFONE LIVE ! HANDICAP
THE MESSENGER BRINGS THE RESULT
Jazz Messenger, a well backed 5-1 joint favourite, produced a powerful final furlong dash to take the opening Vodafone Live ! Handicap by half a length from Tiber.
This was his first venture over a mile and a quarter, but his trainer Gerard Butler said that the increase in distance “was much less of a worry than the 14lb he was put up after winning at Haydock.
“He travelled well through the race apart from becoming a bit unbalanced when he crossed the road, but Eddie (Ahern) said that once he was on an even keel again he was always sure that he would get there.
“He had to make a decision two furlongs out whether to go to the outside or the inner. He chose the outer and it worked out well for him.
“Jazz Messenger will not go anywhere near Ascot. He is a light fellow who does not need too much racing, so I would see him as a horse for the John Smith’s (Magnet) Cup and then maybe ending up at the Cambridgeshire.”
The winner carries the colours of Swedish owner Sven Hanson, which were very much to the fore on Epsom Saturday 25 years ago when his filly Fair Salinia won the Oaks -- by a short head after it took the judge an eternity to split him and runner-up Dancing Maid.
Harry Herbert, racing manager of Highclere Thorougbreds, owners of second-placed Tiber, said: “He ran a fantastic race and hopefully that has put to bed any chat that he’s a monkey because he wears blinkers.
“He only wears them because as a two-year-old he wouldn’t go out of his box for some reason - something must have happened to him as a foal or yearling - and the blinkers cured it.
“We have no immediate plans, we know now that he stays a mile and a quarter and had thought about the King George V Handicap but I don’t think he’ll get a mile and a half so we’ll have a rethink. I’m not sure there will be anything for him at Royal Ascot over a mile and a quarter.”
THUMBS UP FOR GROUND
There was a chorus of approval from the jockeys for the way the ground was riding after Jazz Messenger landed the opener.
Winning jockey Eddie Ahern said: “The ground is riding perfectly. It couldn’t be better.”
Richard Quinn and Jamie Spencer were others who returned from the first race, declaring the racing surface to be spot-on.
Ahern was delighted to record his first success of the two-day meeting.
He said: “I got a nice position from a bad draw. They didn’t go over-quick but my horse was nice and relaxed, had the rail and came down the hill.
“It sounds funny, but when I got to the rising ground he took a bit of organising. Once I got him organised, I gave him a couple more back-handers to go by the second and he did it well.
“He changed legs a few times but once he got on an even keel, I knew I was going to go by the second.”
SECOND SUCCESSIVE WOODCOTE
Parkview Love gave trainer Mark Johnston his second successive Vodafone Woodcote Stakes victory with a game front-running display.
The Mister Baileys colt, owned by Clive Nicholson, held the late challenge of Cedarberg to emulate The Bonus King’s victory in the six-furlong Listed race last year.
Johnson said: “I’m absolutely delighted. We bred the winner and that makes a huge difference. I hadn’t realised before how these breeders feel!”
Comparing the victory to The Bonus King’s 12 months ago, Johnson added: “Similar tactics, but you couldn’t have more different horses.
“This horse has been a real strange one. We bred him, put him through the sales and he went through them very cheaply and then I sold him to Clive.
“And I suppose because he was such a cheap yearling, we have taken liberties a bit. He’s a May 31st foal, a big rangy horse - he shouldn’t be running yet, never mind doing six furlongs at Epsom.
“He shows so much speed on the gallops that I can’t resist it. I keep chucking him in at the deep end.”
Johnston has now won all three Listed races run for juveniles this year following victories in the National Stakes and the Hilary Needler Trophy.
PLACED QUOTES RACE TWO
VODAFONE WOODCOTE STAKES
ASCOT A POSSIBILITY
“He wasted a lot of energy before the race. I am not making excuses but I am sure it didn’t help,” said Mick Channon after Cedarberg had been beaten a neck by all the way winner Parkview Love in the Vodafone Woodcote Stakes after having his mind very much on other things beforehand.
“I don’t know about Ascot, but I certainly brought him here with that very much on my mind. I shall have to see what Sheikh Mohammed feels about things.”
Brian Meehan also is thinking of the Royal meeting for third-placed Cape Fear who, he felt, was no ideally suited by the track. “You never know about them acting here until you bring them to the course.
“But he is a nice colt and has run a good race. I shall have a talk with Nick (Robinson of Kennet Valley Thoroughbreds) and see what he thinks about going to Ascot.”
The stewards inquired into interference between Cedarberg and Our Gamble, who finished seventh, inside the final furlong, but decided that no further action was necessary.
THIRD RACE WINNING QUOTES
VODAFONE DIOMED STAKES (GROUP 3)
MILLION IN MIND FOR GATEMAN
Mark Johnston and jockey Keith Dalgliesh completed a 47.75/1 double when Gateman - who was trained in America for a while - bounced back from a disappointing run in Milan last time out to land the Group 3 Vodafone Diomed Stakes en route to a tilt at the Arlington Million in Chicago in August.
“He’s a wonderful horse to train, so solid and consistent,” said Johnston. “We went to Italy last time and thought he’d win so we were very disappointed but he has bounced back.
“I think he might have a trip back to America now for the Arlington Million. Nick Robinson (racing manager of owners Kennet Valley Thoroughbreds) has been thinking about it for some time.
“We had a lot of options abroad and then saw this race where he didn’t get a penalty. We’ll map out a plan en route to America now.
“Keith said he knew all down the hill that he had a bit of kick left so he decided to kick on and stretch them all with three to go. Keith reckoned he always had a bit up his sleeve.”
The winner ran in the name of Keith Holder, an accountant from Essex, who had won a prize in The Daily Mail to have a runner today.
Queen Anne Next For Reel Buddy?
Richard Hannon declared himself “very happy” with runner-up Reel Buddy’s efforts in the Vodafone Diomed Stakes.
Hannon said: “He has to come from the back and he got a fairly good run through today. One of these races is going to fall to him very soon.”
“We might run him next at Royal Ascot in the mile race (the Queen Anne Stakes). He is the type of horse that could run well there.”
King of Happiness was third to the winner Gateman, leaving connections a little downbeat.
Joe Mercer, racing manager to the owner Saeed Suhail, said: “We are slightly disappointed with the way he has run.
“He has come and looked as if he was going to win the race and he just hasn’t found enough. Listening to him blow after the race, it sounds to me as if he probably needed it.”
MORE SPRINT SUCCESS FOR DANDY
David Nicholls watched Atlantic Victory triumph in the Vodafone Dash Rated Stakes and then quipped: “I’m going to supplement him for the Derby.”
It was the eight-year-old Danehill gelding’s second course and distance success.
Nicholls added: “He likes this place He got a great draw today and he was always in control from a furlong out. Seb Sanders gave him a good ride. He is a lovely, lovely horse.”
“It is hard to take on these big guns, but we keep coming down and taking them on.“
Atlantic Victory has an entry for the Wokingham at Royal Ascot but Nicholls said: “He will get a penalty, so whether or not we run him there I don’t know. I will have to speak to the owners.”
Nicholls also gave a firm hint that the end may be nigh - racewise - for nine-year-old Rudi’s Pet, who finished 10th.
He said: “He is near retirement. He has been a great servant. But then I might see him in the morning and he’ll be bucking and kicking. What I don’t want, though, is him running around in claimers.”
PLACED QUOTES RACE FOUR
VODAFONE DASH
THE BISHOP WAS “TOO HANDY”
Bishop’s Court, trying for his third win in the Vodafone Dash at the age of nine, had to settle for fourth behind Atlantic Viking, who at eight is one year his junior.
He had his chance approaching the final furlong but could find no more in the final 100 yards, though connections were by no means downhearted.
“Frankie (Dettori) said that he was just too handy, but he broke well and he could not pull him back after that,”said the horse’s trainer Lynda Ramsden.
“He was just too handy and it would have made it a more suitable race for him if there had been a bigger field and he had been able to get more cover.
“But you cannot complain about how he has run under his big weight and he was not beaten very far.
“I don’t know where we will go next with him. There is nothing suitable at Ascot but we have taken him to Ireland in the past and we might go there again.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE SIX
VODAFONE RATED HANDICAP
EIGHT YEARS ON
“This is an amazing story,” said Simon Dow after Gallery God had made all the running to hold off Zibeline and Muhareb in the Vodafone Rated Handicap.
“Eight years ago this horse’s owners, John Robinson and Derek Stubbs, had a winner with their very first runner, Global Dancer, in what was the big apprentice race, in the race after the Derby.
“He was ridden by Alan Daly and, like Gallery God, he made all the running, but the owners have not had another horse with me until we bought Gallery God out of Geoff Wragg’s last backend, though we have been in contact over that period. And here we are, once again winning the race after the Derby !
“He won for us in the South of France at Cagnes-sur-Mer in the winter, but then disappointed in the Listed race there, and my horses have been under a bit of a cloud for much of this season.
“There has not been anything which you can test for, and there have been signs in the last few weeks that they are on the mend.
“This horse is very tough as he showed when he fought off the other challenges, and I would like to run him now in the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot, in which he was third last year when Geoff trained him.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE SEVEN
VODAFONE HANDICAP
NICHOLLS DOUBLES UP
Dandy Nicholls had his second success of the afternoon when Loyal Tycoon, ridden by his trainer’s son Adrian, took the last race of the meeting by a length and a quarter from stablemate Onlytime Will Tell to complete a 74-1 double for the stable
“I must be the leading trainer here,” said Nicholls, which was not quite right as he is third on the list of those with runners at Epsom today. This was his 11th strike in the last five years.
Loyal Tycoon broke the track record for six furlongs, with his time of 1 minute 7.38 just beating Brevity’s 1 minute 7.9 two years ago.
“He is a good horse and will be winning again,” said the trainer. “He has been a bit unlucky in his last two races as he didn’t get a box (Nichollese for a good draw) at Pontefract last time. But he had a box today and Adrian was able to hold him up.He is better when he can get a lead and not have to come too soon.
“I expect he will be entered for the (Vodafone) Stewards’ Cup and he will be a contender if he gets a box there. He loves this ground. It is a great thrill to have a winner here on Derby day and as far as Adrian was concerned this was his Derby.”
The stewards inquired into the circumstances in which Idle Power missed the break and was left many lengths. They spoke to the horse’s trainer and jockey, James Boyle and Jimmy Fortune, and to the starter Simon Morant, and a confidential report will be sent to the Stewards of the Jockey Club.
Stipendiary steward William Nunneley explained that “Idle Power had his head down in the stalls and Jimmy Fortune was trying to get his blindfold off. He shouted to the starter, but the starter could not identify from where the call came and in any case, as he was in the process of pressing the release button, there was nothing he could do.”
ARRIVAL OF HM THE QUEEN
HM The Queen and her party are due to arrive at Tattenham Corner, which is at the top end of Epsom Downs racecourse, at 12.55pm.
With the Royal party, Her Majesty will then be driven down the course - weather permitting - and will be welcomed by Epsom Racecourse officials and dignitaries.
The Kings Division Waterloo Band will then strike up the National Anthem before Her Majesty takes her place in the Queen’s Stand shortly after 1.00pm.
She will be accompanied by Princess Alexandra, the Hon. Lady Ogilvy, Rt Hon Sir Angus Ogilvy, Sir Michael and Lady Angela Oswald, Mr John Warren, Mr and Mrs Philip Wroughton, the Hon James and Mrs Henderson, Mrs Fiona Henderson and Lieutenant Colonel Charles Richards.
FINAL DERBY START FOR MORANT
Simon Morant, the Official Starter, will get the Vodafone Derby underway for the 10th and final time this afternoon.
Morant, who is to go part-time as a starter at the end of the year, believes he has been privileged to carry out his responsibilities on Derby Day over the past decade.
He said: “It has been a tremendous honour to start the Derby as it is to start all the major races.
“Touch wood, I’ve started nine Derbys and we haven’t had any great problems. They are usually good horses and as such have been pretty good in the stalls.”
Asked whether he’ll miss starting the Derby in the future, Morant replied: “There will possibly be a slight pang. But having done it 10 times after today, I think that will be my share.
“Perhaps next year I will have a chance to see the race. We don’t see it from the start, we hear it on the radio on our way back.”
DWYER REFLECTS ON OAKS GLORY
Martin Dwyer was this morning looking back on the best day of his career to date.
Dwyer yesterday won the Vodafone Oaks - his first Classic success - on the Andrew Balding-trained Casual Look as part of an amazing 747-1 treble that also included wins on Aldora and Passing Glance.
He said: “Last year I had a double at Royal Ascot and I thought that was the best but yesterday topped it off.
“It was just amazing. It was one of those days where everything went right for me.
“To come to these big meetings and ride is fantastic. But to win a Classic is what you really work for. And when it comes off, it’s great.
“I don’t think it has fully sunk in yet because I’ve just kept going. I’ve got a day off tomorrow, so I think I may celebrate properly tonight.”
Dwyer spent part of last night enjoying the celebrations at Balding’s Kingsclere yard.
He said: “The atmosphere was amazing; the whole place was buzzing. The yard is in a small village and even people that don’t work there were in there when we got back.”
WELD: EVERYTHING’S SET
Dermot Weld flew in with Refuse to Bend this morning and described the Sadler’s Wells’ colt’s final preparations as “perfect.”
Weld said: “He’s travelled over well. I came over with him a few hours ago and he’s all set.”
Weld also declared himself more than satisfied with the ground.
He added: “It’s absolutely beautiful ground and a credit to the staff at Epsom.”
Commenting on whether the horse would act on the course, Weld said: “Epsom is a law unto itself. We saw yesterday how unlucky in many ways Yesterday was.
“You need all the luck in running. I think it’s a very open Derby and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see one of the English outsiders feature strongly in the race.
“I’m hopeful, not confident. This is a big, big challenge today for this colt. We are running him, maybe, out of his true trip.
“But he’s got so much class, so much speed that we are hopeful that he can carry that speed over the distance.
“He has the most speed of any horse in the race; so if he stays he should win.”
THE BHB SUMMER TRIPLE CROWN AND GRAND SLAM
Today’s Vodafone Derby is part of the first leg of the British Horseracing Board’s new £5 million Summer Triple Crown and Grand Slam, offering the richest prize in world horse racing.
Yesterday’s Vodafone Oaks, won by Casual Look, and Vodafone Coronation Cup, which went to Warrsan, along with the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 18, are the other legs in the first stage of this exciting challenge.
If the winner of any of these four races goes on to win the Coral Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park on July 5 and then the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes on July 26, the horse will land the Summer Triple Crown and a £1 million bonus.
If the horse then goes on to land the Juddmonte International at York on August 19, and completes the Grand Slam it will scoop £5 million in total.
If there is no winner of the Summer Triple Crown or Grand Slam, a prize of £250,000 will be paid to the horse accruing the most points (based on finishing positions) in the races, landing the Middle Distance Championship.
The most recent winner of the Vodafone Derby to go on to win the Coral Eclipse Stakes in the same year was Nashwan (1989) while others to have achieved the feat since 1900 are Diamond Jubilee (1900), Lemberg (1910), Coronach (1926), Blue Peter (1939), Tulyar (1952) and Mill Reef (1971).

GOING NEWS AT 10 AM
There has been virtually no rain at Epsom since last night so the going for Vodafone Derby day remains
GOOD.
“We have had no measurable rain this morning, just a few spits and spots,” said clerk of the course Andrew Cooper.
“So the ground is still good, though there may be some patches where it rides a bit slower and some where it is a bit faster.
“There is no forecast of any rain, so I expect that the track will dry out slightly and gradually through the day. I do not anticipate having to change the going.”
BETTING NEWS
Brian Boru may be some people’s idea of the favourite and the winner of this afternoon’s Vodafone Derby, but there are plenty of punters prepared to take him on and the bookmakers report a wide range of interest in many of his 19 rivals.
The Sagitta 2,000 Guineas winner Refuse To Bend has been in demand with William Hill at 100-30 and very popular with Coral, who have cut his price from 4-1 to 3-1. Victor Chandler have had money for Kris Kin, who is now in from 14-1 to 12-1 and the Tote report interest in the other supplemented entry (@ £90,000) Norse Dancer, who was third in the 2,000 Guineas and is now at 16-1 from 20-1
Jazz Messenger, whose stablemate Inchberry ran so well in yesterday’s Vodafone Oaks, has been popular in the opening Vodafone Live ! Handicap and is in from 11-2 to 9-2 with Ladbrokes, to the same price from 5-1 with Chandlers and Hills and from 5-1 to 9-2 with Bet365. The Tote have had money in the same race for Todlea, cut by six points to 10-1
In the Vodafone Woodcote Stakes (2.10) Cop Hill Lad has been popular with Hills (5-2 to 9-4) and Paddy Power (5-2 from 11-4), while Hills have also had money for Morse, who is in by a point from 10-1.
Dupont has caught the eye in the Vodafone Diomed Stakes (2.40) and has come in from 7-1 to 5-1 with Coral, and the Tote, Powers and Chandler have done business over Battle Chant, who is in by two points to 5-1, from 13-2 to 5-1 and at 11-2 from 13-2 respectively.
Bishop’s Court is all the rage as he tries to win the Vodafone Dash (3.10) for the third time. He is in to 3-1 from 4-1 with Bet365 and Chandlers, at the same price from 9-2 with Powers, on 3-1 from 7-2 with Coral and at 11-4 from 100-30 with Hills.
Salim Toto has been backed to repeat last year’s success in the Vodafone Rated Handicap (4.45) and has been cut to 9-4 from 3-1 with Hills, and in the closing Vodafone Handicap (5.20) Simianna has been trimmed by Powers from 12-1 to 11-1
Powers think that Refuse To Bend is a 4-5 chance to start Derby favourite, with Brian Boru at 2-1 and Alamshar on 5-2, and in their betting without the Irish book Prince Nureyev has been cut from 66-1 to half that price.
Looking ahead to next year (already !) Bet365 offer 5-2 against Aidan O’Brien training the winner and 10-1 against Frankie Dettori being the successful jockey.
