CORAL-ECLIPSE - FACTS AND FIGURES
* The Coral-Eclipse commemorates the great racehorse and stallion Eclipse. Foaled in 1764, the chesnut was never defeated in 18 races, seven of which were run in heats, and won all of them very easily. Eight of his victories were walkovers, as he usually frightened away all the opposition. According to his owner Major Dennis O'Kelly it was always "Eclipse first, the rest nowhere." He was a phenomenal success at stud and by the time of his death in 1789 he had sired the winners of over 860 races, including three Derby winners. Over 90 per cent of modern racehorses can be traced back to Eclipse in the male line. His skeleton can be found in the National Horseracing Museum at Newmarket.
* It was decided by one of Sandown Park's founders, General Owen Williams, that the course should stage a top-class race in order to preserve its position as a "drawing room" racecourse - one which excluded hooligans and was safe for women. Williams persuaded Leopold de Rothschild, a friend of the Prince of Wales, to put up the money for the inaugural running.
* The first running of the Eclipse in 1886 was worth 10,000 - making it the richest race ever run in Britain at the time and worth 5,400 more than the Derby. It was won by Bendigo.
* This year's renewal of the Coral-Eclipse is worth 350,000.
* Coral will be sponsoring the race for the 27th time in 2003 - one of the longest running sponsorships in racing.
* In 1890 the Eclipse was not run as Sandown Park could not afford the 10,000 prize money.
* World War II prevented the race being run between 1940 and 1945.
* The first horse to record back-to-back victories was Orme in 1892 and 1893.
* Since then, there have been a further four dual winners - Buchan (1919 & 1920), Polyphontes (1924 & 1925), Mtoto (1987 & 1988) and, most recently, Halling (1995 & 1996). No horse has yet won the contest on more than two occasions.
* The most successful current jockeys in the race are Michael Kinane and Pat Eddery, who have each recorded three victories. Kinane, successful in last year's race with Hawk Wing, has also scored on Pilsudski in 1997 and Opera Housein 1993 while Eddery's wins were on Sadler's Wells (1984), Solford (1983) and Coup De Feu (1974).
* Medicean's victory in 2001 enabled Sir Michael Stoute to become the most successful current trainer in the Coral-Eclipse. The master of Freemason Lodge has trained four winners of the race - Medicean (2001), Pilsudski (1997), Ezzoud (1994) and Opera House (1993). Both Henry Cecil and Saeed bin Suroor have trained three winners each.
* The biggest shock came in 1974 when Coup De Feu came home in front at 33/1.
* The shortest-priced favourite to win was the Prince Of Wales's Persimmon, who was returned at 12/100 in 1897.
* During the post-war period 21 market leaders have won, the last being Hawk Wing in 2002.
* The Queen won the 1965 running with Canisbay.
* The Maktoum Family's international racing operation, Godolphin, recorded an amazing feat in 1998. The first three horses home - Daylami, Faithful Son and Central Park - were all owned by Godolphin and trained by Saeed bin Suroor. This was the first occasion when the same owner/trainer combination have had the first three horses home in a Group One race.
* The 1969 winner, Wolver Hollow, provided the first of many big race successes for 10-times champion trainer Henry Cecil.
* Since 1946, there have been 11 Irish-trained winners, seven French-trained winners and one German-trained winner.
* Star Appeal (1975), was until the victory by Boreal in the 2002 Vodafone Coronation Cup at Epsom Downs, the last German-trained Group One winner in Britain.
* Nashwan (1989) was the last Vodafone Derby victor to win the Coral-Eclipse. Other horses to complete the double in the post-war period are Mill Reef (1971) and Tulyar (1952). Royal Palace (1968) and St Paddy (1961) were both successful at Sandown Park the year after their Epsom Downs triumph.
* The Coral-Eclipse is run over ten furlongs and is the first Group One middle-distance race of the season where horses from the Classic generation can compete against their older counterparts.

MOON BALLAD, EMPIRE MAKER AND FUNNY CIDE LEAD WORLD THOROUGHBRED RANKINGS FOR CLASSIC DIVISION CONTENDERS
Top 10 Rankings to Include International Runners in Each Championship Division
The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) and Breeders' Cup Limited today announced the first set of 2003 World Thoroughbred Rankings for six of the eight racing divisions that comprise the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships.Initial rankings, from race results through June 20, reflect the Distaff, Filly & Mare Turf, NetJets Mile, John Deere Turf, Sprint and the Classic - Powered by Dodge divisions (see attached). The Bessemer Trust Juvenile and Juvenile Fillies divisional rankings will commence in late summer.
An international panel of racing officials will produce weekly rankings for the world's top 10 Thoroughbred runners in each division through October 7. Rankings are determined by analysis of the horses' performances in select graded and group stakes races from around the world and are used to help determine starting positions in the Breeders' Cup. Only horses that have made at least one start this year will be considered for rankings.
MOON BALLAD (IRE), winner of the Dubai World Cup, leads the Classic Division - Powered by Dodge. Owned by Godolphin Racing and trained by Saeed bin Suroor, the four-year-old Moon Ballad has been assigned a top rating of 125. Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner FUNNY CIDE, Belmont Stakes winner EMPIRE MAKER and Oaklawn Handicap winner MEDAGLIA D'ORO follow, each receiving a 123 rating. MINESHAFT, winner of the Pimlico Special, TEN MOST WANTED, second in the Belmont Stakes, and CONGAREE, winner of the San Antonio Stakes, are bracketed at 121. Toyota Blue Grass Stakes winner PEACE RULES is slotted in eighth place, followed by a ninth-place tie between last year's Breeders' Cup Classic winner VOLPONI and 2003 Donn Handicap winner HARLAN'S HOLIDAY.
Reigning Horse of the Year AZERI leads the Distaff Division at 123. The five-year-old mare, owned by Allen E. Paulson Living Trust and trained by Laura de Seroux, won last year's Breeders' Cup Distaff and is unbeaten in three starts this year.Azeri is followed by three fillies rated at 117: four-year-old TAKE CHARGE LADY, runner up to Azeri in Oaklawn's Apple Blossom Handicap, and three-year-olds BIRD TOWN, winner of the Kentucky Oaks, and ELLOLUV, who won the Santa Ynez Stakes at Santa Anita Park.
The versatile five-year-old Congaree, owned by Stonerside Stable and trained by Bob Baffert, shares the Sprint Division leadership with the four-year-old Australian speedster CHOISIR (AUS), who stunned Royal Ascot with victories in both the King's Stand Stakes and the group 1 Golden Jubilee, just four days apart. Both Congaree and Choisir are rated at 121.
Other winners from the Royal Ascot meet dominate the top spots in the turf divisions:NAYEF, winner of the Prince of Wales's Stakes last Wednesday, and Dubai Sheema Classic winner SULAMANI (IRE), lead the John Deere Turf Division; DUBAI DESTINATION, who captured the Queen Anne Stakes last Tuesday at Royal Ascot, heads the NetJets Mile Division. Defending NetJets Breeders' Cup Mile champion DOMEDRIVER (IRE) is rated fifth in this division along with English 2000 Guineas winner REFUSE TO BEND (IRE). RUSSIAN RHYTHM, winner of the 1000 Guineas and of last Friday's Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, tops the Filly & Mare Turf ranks.
The World Thoroughbred Rankings racing panel includes Frank Gabriel, executive vice president of racing and racing secretary for Arlington Park; Nigel Gray, senior handicapper for The Jockey Club (England); Mike Lakow, racing secretary for the New York Racing Association; Garry O'Gorman, senior handicapper for the Irish Turf Club; Tom Robbins, director of racing for the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club and Gerald Sauque, senior handicapper for France Galop.
"The weekly World Thoroughbred Rankings give racing fans an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the top international horses headed for the Breeders' Cup," said D.G. Van Clief, Jr., president of Breeders' Cup Limited. "The more information we can provide our fans about these horses, the more attractive we can make the Breeders' Cup, both as a spectator event and as a pari-mutuel wagering event."
This year's Breeders' Cup will be held during the Oak Tree Meeting at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., on October 25.
The NTRA is a broad-based coalition of horseracing interests, including the American Quarter Horse Association, charged with increasing popularity of horseracing and improving economic conditions for industry participants. The NTRA and Breeders' Cup Limited also administer the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships, Thoroughbred racing's year-end Championships consisting of eight races and $14 million in purses and awards, the Breeders' Cup Stakes Program and the Great State Challenge. The NTRA has offices in Lexington, Ky., and New York City. NTRA press releases appear on the NTRA Web site, ntra.com.
