FULL WEEKEND OF RACING AT DONCASTER
Top-class action on the track and a plethora of entertainment for the whole family, particularly on Sunday, makes for a tremendous weekend of racing at Doncaster on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon (28 & 29 June).
Britain's first-ever Sunday meeting took place on Town Moor back in July 1992, and this year's quality programme begins at 2.10 p.m. with The Home Of Sunday Racing Stakes (a £15,000-added handicap contest over the extended mile and a quarter), while the Savoyard Rated Stakes – a £20,000 handicap for sprinters over the minimum distance of five furlongs – pays tribute to the first winner on that historic Sunday at Doncaster eleven years ago.
The £20,000 ‘Sunday Is Funday' Conditions Stakes (extended one mile and a quarter) is also featured, while The ‘Pablo' Rated Stakes, a handicap contest over the straight mile is named after the winner of The Freephone Stanley Lincoln Handicap on Town Moor back in March.
The host of attractions for young racegoers on Sunday afternoon are centred on the Family Enclosure and include three performances by The National Festival Circus, the ‘Magical Funtime Show', the ‘Mighty Smith Strongman Show', fairground rides, ‘bungee-running', a comedy trampoline act, rodeo bull, spaceball, bouncy castles, Cresta Run and the usual crèche facility available at £1.80 per hour. Strolling entertainers will also mingle with racegoers! As always, accompanied children under 16 years of age are admitted free of charge into all enclosures.
The giant ToteVision on Sunday, as well as showing all the racing on Town Moor, will also feature The Irish Derby from The Curragh.
Racing on Saturday evening begins at 6.45 p.m. with a race for maiden two-year-old fillies supported by both The European Breeders Fund and new sponsors to Doncaster, bet365, one of the U.K.'s leading independent bookmakers. The Regional Magazine Company, publishers of the official St. Leger souvenir brochure, return to Doncaster to once again support a Conditions race for two-year-olds, while the longest race of the meeting is The Castle Working Men's Club Stayers' Handicap Stakes over the St. Leger distance of one mile, six furlongs and 132 yards.
The inaugural running of The Pat Roundtree Memorial Maiden Stakes over the extended one mile and a quarter is also featured on Saturday evening. Mrs. Roundtree, who passed away in March, was a racehorse owner, along with her husband, John, who also owns the North East Derbyshire Snooker Centre and The Prince of Wales Hotel in Chesterfield.
The musical entertainment on both days is provided by The Tom Roberts Jazz Band.
