BUMPER CROWDS ALL WEEK
With Flaming June arriving for the final two days, attendances were on the increase with the glorious sunshine on Friday pulling in a record fourth-day crowd of 68,508 - 7.7% up on last year.
There were also more racegoers coming through the turnstiles on the Wednesday than 12 months ago, with 57,099 flocking in, an increase of 1.2%, and, while the first day’s attendance of 47,900 was slightly down on last year’s record figures for the Tuesday, it was still better than 2001. It was a similar story on Ladies’ Day (Thursday), with the 74,792 falling just short of the record crowd of 2002 but well up on the previous year.
Today’s crowd was also a record for a Saturday of the Royal Meeting - 57,875, up 0.3% on the attendance at the first Royal Saturday last year.

ERSKINE-CRUM REFLECTS ON GREAT WEEK
Douglas Erskine-Crum, Ascot’s chief executive, was all smiles as the sun blazed down on the Royal Heath for the final day and declared the five-day meeting “another huge success.”
He said: ”Everything has gone extremely well, mainly due to the fantastic standard of the racing and the wonderful weather.
“The crowds have been excellent and racegoers have, on the whole, been very well behaved, so we are all very happy.
“We are delighted with the attendance figures for this year’s Royal Meeting, especially Friday which could well be challenging Gold Cup Day in popularity soon!
“We broke the four-day record last year and, with the additional fifth day, welcomed over 300,000 visitors during the week for the first time. We honestly didn’t think we could break the 304,614 record (with 306,174 this year) so quickly but Royal Ascot goes from strength to strength and continues to appeal to so many people is so many ways.
“I was particularly pleased to see Choisir win the King’s Stand Stakes for Australia on Tuesday and then succeed again today in the Golden Jubilee Stakes as we have worked hard for the past two years to attract international runners.
“All credit to Nick Cheyne, who has worked tirelessly spreading the gospel and, with the help of the International Racing Bureau, has travelled the racing globe searching out the top horses and doing his level best to get them to come to Royal Ascot.
“The fact that we have attracted two Australian runners and an American sprinter for today’s Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes suggests that Nick’s travelling has not been in vain, and during the week we have also seen challengers from Hong Kong, Dubai, South Africa and Germany.
“Victory Moon was a quality runner from South Africa in the Queen Anne Stakes on Tuesday, and it is good news that he is staying over for the Coral-Eclipse and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes. The step up in distance will suit him well.
”The standard of racing here has never been higher and the international victories show that the Royal Meeting is moving from being a European Championship to a landmark annual event on the world stage.
“We will continue to build on what has been achieved this year both in terms of action on the track and the experience of Royal Ascot for all our many customer groups.”
FINAL DAY’S TOTE TURNOVER
For the fourth day in a row the Tote turnover was up on that of last year, with today’s £1,401,975 representing an increase of 2.5% on last year’s £1,368,115.
Over the five days of the meeting the turnover amounted to £9,248,445, up by 11.5% on last year’s £8,298,032 -- the first time that the Tote has topped £9million at a meeting.
The Tote is also delighted to report that their dividends beat SP on 21 occasions, with the bookmakers coming out on top nine times and one race being the same.
Ladbrokes report that punters won their exchanges by three days to two and report a record turnover at the meeting for them.
WONDERFUL ROYAL ASCOT FOR
THE TOTE
The Tote have seen an unprecedented level of business at Royal Ascot this year and are on course for a record turnover for the week by the end of business today.
Wednesday’s on-course cash turnover, up more than 18 per cent on 2002, topped £2 million for the first time on a day of Royal Ascot and that benchmark was passed again on Thursday and Friday.
The Tote on-course cash turnover figures for the week, compared to 2002, are as follows:
2002 2003 +/-
Tuesday £1,560,633 £1,678,242 +7.5%
Wednesday £1,703,482 £2,019,064 +18.5%

TOTAL £8,298,032 £9,248,445 +11.5%

Frankie Dettori landed the London Clubs trophy awarded for the top rider at Royal Ascot - courtesy of his “half” on dead-heater Ratio in the Wokingham Handicap.
Dettori, winning the prize for the fourth time, said:”I fancied my chances at the start of the week, but after Dubai Destination won on Tuesday everything went a bit pear-shaped.
“Everything was running well, but we weren’t hitting the button and this morning I had resigned myself to having no chance.
“But Hold to Ransom gave me fresh hope when winning the first, and I was praying to God that the judge would announce at least a dead-heat for Ratio.”
Dettori finished the meeting with three winners, the same as Richard Hughes and Kieren Fallon, but the Italian also booted home five seconds, which ultimately proved the deciding factor.
FIRST RACE WINNING QUOTES
SANDRINGHAM RATED STAKES (LISTED HANDICAP)
DROP BACK TO MILE SEES DUNLOP CHARGE HOLD RIVALS TO RANSOM
The Ed Dunlop-trained Hold To Ransom ran out a facile winner of the opening Sandringham Rated Stakes when scoring with five lengths to spare over runner-up Sharplaw Venture.
“It was probably trainer error that I’d been running her over the wrong trip,” said Dunlop. “Dropping back to a mile has made all the difference today.
“It was was my fault trying to make her stay. She was second to Hi Dubai in the Pretty Polly then the Musidora was a messy race when two horses took each other on and didn’t get home. But she ran well in the Nell Gwyn.
“Frankie (Dettori) says she wants good ground and a mile rather than a mile and a quarter.
“She did well to win by that far under top weight and is in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket.”

DETTORI’S SECOND WIN OF THE WEEK
Frankie Dettori, the winning rider on Hold To Ransom, said: “I have mainly had seconds (4), thirds (1) and fourths (4) this week as we didn’t have the same ammunition we have had in past years.
“But I was very pleased when Dubai Destination won (the Queen Anne Stakes on the first day) and this is a nice winner to have.
“I rode her a bit of work on Tuesday and she was very keen so I said that we were doing the right thing going for a mile - the strong pace really suited her and I knew she would stay really well. So I kicked her on and she won very well.”
Asked how he coped with five days of Royal Ascot, Dettori said: “The riding is the easy part. Every race is a championship race and the amount of pressure from the public, trainers and owners plus a lot of anxiety you put on yourself means you feel like you have been run over twice.
“But this is part and parcel of our job - I will have a couple of days off next week, that’s for sure.”

SANDRINGHAM RATED STAKES
HAGGAS DELIGHTED
William Haggas was in reflective mood after Sharplaw Venture had finished five lengths second to top weight Hold To Ransom in the opening Sandringham Rated Stakes.
“Twelve months ago we were beaten by John Dunlop when Tashawak beat Chorist, and this time Ed has done us,” he said.
“But I am delighted with her. This was her first attempt at a mile and she has stayed on well; we shall keep her to this distance for the moment at least.
“Interestingly, she is a half sister to Firebreak, who runs in the Golden Jubilee later on today. He has come back to sprinting after winning at a mile but my filly is going in the opposite direction.”
Chris Richardson of Cheveley Park Stud, whose hot favourite Chic finished third, felt that the ground was too fast for the filly. “Kieren (Fallon) felt that even going down to the start it was too firm for her, and though she got to the front about two furlongs out, she would not let herself down on the ground.”
He reported that their heroine of yesterday, Russian Rhythm, is in good form after her Coronation Stakes success and that the team will certainly look at Goodwood’s Sussex Stakes for her.
Jimmy Fortune, whose mount Wondrous Story was hampered in some scrimmaging, described the ground as “like a road.” Richard Hills, Pat Smullen, Pat Eddery and Steve Drowne, agreed with that description, assessing conditions as “quick -- very quick.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE TWO
HARDWICKE STAKES
LAST TO FIRST BY THE CREEK
Indian Creek, pushed along from flagfall and still last turning for home, produced a powerful dash up the straight to take the Hardwicke Stakes from last year’s St Leger winner Bollin Eric, with the 2002 Hardwicke winner Zindabad in third.
“This was his first attempt over a mile and a half, and we have been becoming increasingly frustrated over a mile and a quarter with him not getting the proper gallop he needs.
“That was the case in so many of his races last year, like the Eclipse in which Aidan O’Brien had two or three runners but instead of making it a good gallop all they were doing was slowing it down, which is no good for him.
“We had wondered about the Prince of Wales’s Stakes this year, but again that is a mile and a quarter so we were worried about the pace, and decided to come here.
“He is a funny old horse, some people call him a bit quirky, but he is a good horse -- make no mistake about that. He hasn’t got any feet, and I don’t know why I bought him really, but he has a good eye and a real look about him.
“Richard Quinn has ridden him to many of his wins and knows him well, and it is nice to get on the scoreboard at the meeting, it has all been a bit frustrating.
“Now that he has won over a mile and a half we could well bring him back here for the King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes next month”
PLACED HORSES IN SECOND RACE
THE HARDWICKE STAKES
BOLLIN ERIC CHINNED ON THE LINE
Tim Easterby, thwarted close home when Bollin Eric was caught close home in the Hardwicke Stakes, stood proudly in the place reserved for the second and declared: “Our horse has run a blinder.”
He added: ”Bollic Eric ran all the way to the line and I couldn’t have asked for anything better. The Group 1 penalty possibly beat us, but I have no complaints. He will improve again and now we will think about both the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes back here next month and then the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris in October.”
Kevin Darley, who rode Bollin Eric, declared that last year’s St Leger winner had “done everything right.”
He said:”He was a bit keen for the first furlong, but he soon switched off and he never stopped trying. I could not believe it when Indian Creek came from out of the clouds to pip us.”
Bollin Eric is now a 14/1 chance from 33/1 for the King George and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes with Paddy Power, while winner Indian Creek is priced at 16/1. The 2/1 favourite is Godolphin’s Sulamani, with this week’s Prince Of Wales’s winner Nayef a 5/1 chance.
Mark Johnston, who was responsible for both third (Zindabad) and fourth (Bandari) in the Hardwicke Stakes, admitted to being “frustrated” by his two runners.
He said:”Our horses have been running well all week, and, while this pair have both performed creditably, neither are finding the edge that they had last year.
“Zindabad ran another brave race, but he is not achieving what we know he can do. Maybe, we are not going fast enough in front, because he was never flat to the boards today.”
Johnston was similarly bemused as to why Bandari is not firing like he did last year. He added:”We changed the tactics this time and rode a more patient race, but he still did not run as well as he is capable of. We might come down in distance and revert to a front-running role.”
WINNING QUOTES FOR THIRD RACE
GOLDEN JUBILEE
AUSSIE CHOISIR GAINS QUICK REVENGE FOR RUGBY DEFEAT
Australian trainer Paul Perry was “not surprised” when Choisir, the dynamo from Down Under who had won the Group 2 King’s Stand Stakes here on Tuesday, smashed the 11-year-old course record with a sensational follow-up performance in the Group 1 Golden Jubilee - the first horse in history to win the two major sprints in the same year on this prestigious programme. The winning time was 1m 12.23s.
Perry said:”Johnny (Murtagh) jumped off and told me to leave Choisir in Britain because he is sure that nothing in Europe will beat him - that victory has certainly squared it up for us losing the rugby to England this morning!
“I thought Tuesday was unbelievable, but this is something special. I thought Choisir might have a job to pull it off from that alley (draw), but he is a serious sprinter and now we will have to think about staying on for the July Cup (July 10) at Newmarket.
“Half a furlong out I saw Airwave dig in and was worried that she might wear us down, but our horse found a bit more. It was just unreal.”
Johnny Murtagh, who went through the pain barrier to win the King’s Stand on Choisir on Tuesday, having endured a nasty fall in the meeting’s curtain-raiser, was lavish in his praise for his new Australian hero after the had staged an incredible encore in the Golden Jubilee.
He said:”From the 20 stall, I knew that I had to jump out and let him drift, but he has so much speed and I was sure a furlong and a half out that nothing would catch us - not even Airwave.
“Choisir is a big, strong tank of a horse. He is tough and genuine and he loves this fast ground, and what’s more he is more relaxed than he was on Tuesday.”
THIRD RACE PLACED QUOTES
GOLDEN JUBILEE STAKES
AIRWAVE FAILS TO MAKE SPLASH BEHIND CHOISIR
Airwave, sent off 11/8 favourite for the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes, could only look on as Australian raider Choisir broke the course record half a length in front of the star filly.
“We were just beaten by a better horse,” lamented Airwave’s trainer Henry Candy. “There were no problems and no excuses. The winner just pulled out a bit more - he’s tough.
“She’ll go for the July Cup now and then probably run over both five and six furlongs.”
Airwave’s rider Dane O’Neill added: “I couldn’t complain and knew at halfway that we were going to have to take him on.”
The 50/1 chance Baron’s Pit, who finished third, delighted trainer Richard Hannon, who was not totally surprised.
“Remember he’s a Group 3 winner and won the Norfolk last year,” said Hannon. “And I think he’ll be a lovely horse next season. He ran well and it looks like we probably should have gone for the Jersey Stakes.”
French raider Zipping ran well to be fourth and his trainer Robert Collet said: “He needs to have a horse to follow to do his best and if he had had the rail to run on he would have done better. He doesn’t have the speed of the Australian to be up there.
“Considering that, he’s done very well and he’ll be back over here for the July Cup.”
The American sprinter Morluc finished stone last and his rider Gary Stevens said: “That was very diasppointing. He loved the ground and broke well, but the first dip he came to he just couldn’t handle and rather put the brakes on going down into it. He wants a dead flat track.”
FOURTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
WOKINGHAM STAKES
RATIO AND JAG DEAD HEAT FOR WOKINGHAM
After ten minutes studying the photo finish, judge Nick Haynes could not split Ratio and Fayr Jag in the Wokingham Stakes, calling the first dead-heat at Royal Ascot since 1994.
Ratio is part-owned by former trainer Robert Armstrong, something that particularly delighted handler French-based John Hammond.
“My first job in racing was with Robert 22 years ago between school and university so I was thrilled when he sent me this horse,” said Hammond. “Ratio had the advantage of ending up on the rail, which was a big help, he just had something to take him along. I think when a photo goes on that long a dead heat is the best thing.
“This race had been the plan from a little way out. For a horse with this sort of rating, these series of handicaps offer a good progession. It was probably not the cleverest thing to pick up a 5lb penalty for winning an amateur race last time out. He’ll go for the Stewards’ Cup (Goodwood) or maybe the Tote Festival Handicap (Ascot) now.
“He has very good form here before -he finished third in the Jersey Stakes as a three-year-old.”
As he awaited the result, Ratio’s rider Frankie Dettori said: “For me it is everything to win this. Because of the number of seconds, a win would give me a big chance in the London Clubs Trophy.
“We both think we’ve won - that’s the problem. We’d better have a ring in the middle and scrap it out!”
Tim Easterby said: “I was relieved when they called a dead heat because the bit went through my fellow’s mouth some time during the race. After going so close with Bollin Eric,I was more than willing to settle for a half here.”
MORE QUOTES FOR FOURTH RACE
THE WOKINGHAM
STEWARDS CLEAR SUPPLE OF EASING UP
Following the Wokingham dead-heat between Fayr Jag and Ratio, the stewards enquired into a claim that Willie Supple might have eased off prematurely on Fayr Jag, thereby denying punters an outright victory.
However, Supple was cleared of any such offence, and stewards’ secretary Paul Barton explained:”The film clearly shows the bit has slipped through Fayr Jag’s mouth, and, consequently, the horse is hanging badly right and making it nigh impossible for Willie to ride him out.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE FIVE
WINDSOR CASTLE STAKES
THREE UP FOR CHANNON
Mick Channon had his third success of the meeting and Steve Drowne his second when Holborn surged through the final furlong of the Windsor Castle Stakes to get the better of Vienna’s Boy,
“I think he is the first horse bred in Dubai to win at Royal Ascot and maybe the first to win in this country, and that rounds off the week nicely for us,” said Channon. Holborn is registered as Holborn (UAE) and is bred by Darley Dubai.
“I have always liked this colt and he was very unlucky when he was beaten in Ireland in very heavy ground last time on what was only his second appearance.
“I am sure he will get six furlongs and we have lots of choices where to go with him over that distance. The July Stakes is one we might think of but there a lot of options.
“It has been a brilliant week’s racing, but we have been mugged, haven’t we with the Australians coming over and taking our money. I think it was tremendous what they did and so very good for international racing. It’s a pity some others don’t have the courage to have a go.”
Although the maroon and white colours of Sheikh Mohammed are seen less often now that so many of his horses run under the blue Godolphin banner, they were very much to the fore here. He had four runners in this race and was third with Howick Falls.
MORLUC INJURED
Morluc, the American sprinter who disappointed in the Golden Jubilee Stakes, has a suspected cracked sesamoid. He has been taken back to Newmarket, where he has been lodging since he came over here nine days ago, and will be treated at Rossdale’s veterinary surgery.
DWYER INJURED
Martin Dwyer sustained a hand injury and was dazed when unseated from Trick Cyclist in the Windsor Castle Stakes.
“He is improving,” said Dr Norman Gordon after the final race of the day. “He will stay here for an hour in the racecourse hospital while we assess him further and then be taken to hospital for further examination. I am not certain at this stage where he will be taken, but it is likely that it will be to Wexham Park Hospital in Slough.
“He is going to face several days off after this.”
Quotes on Placed Horses for Fifth Race -
Windsor Castle Stakes
O’NEILL BLAMES DRAW FOR
VIENNA DEFEAT
Dane O’Neill, who rode runner-up Vienna’s Boy in the Windsor Castle Stakes, felt he might well have beaten the winner, Holborn, had their draws been reversed.
He said:”We started from stall 15, whereas the winner was drawn one. We were beaten a length and a half, yet it must have cost me six lengths getting across.
“Vienna’s Boy is a different horse since he started to relax, and he is definitely better without the golf-balls!”
O’Neill was referring to the fact that Vienna’s Boy was struck by a golf ball when finishing out of the money in the National Stakes at Sandown last time.
David Loder rued his luck when saddling yet another Royal placing, Howick Falls, who filled the minor berth in the Windsor Castle Stakes.
Loder said:”Howick Falls came here after just the one run at Newcastle, and Frankie (Dettori) felt that he had again run green and was still a bit too inexperienced.
“It has been one of those Royal meetings - we have rattled the crossbar all week but, though most of the horses have run well, we have just been missing out. It’s character-building.”
Winning Quotes for Sixth Race - Queen Alexandra Stakes
COVER UP STAGES ENCORE IN QUEEN ALEXANDRA
Kieren Fallon rode his third winner of the meeting when Cover Up repeated last year’s victory in the Queen Alexandra Stakes, though both he and Richard Hughes lost out to Frankie Dettori for the top jockey award on countback for seconds.
Cover Up stayed on resolutely to hold off the Dettori-ridden Tamiami Trail, and Peter Reynolds, racing manager to the late Lord Weinstock’s Ballymacoll Stud operation, said: ”He is a genuine stayer who loves this fast ground, and Sir Michael (Stoute) was always going to get him ready for an encore.
“Cover Up is an old war-horse, and he loves it round here. We won the race twice with Cuff Link, who was trained by Dick Hern, and he is still with us and enjoying life at home in my paddock in Ireland.
“People have called the Queen Alexandra a ‘bumper’ race, but it is still Royal Ascot, and I could not be more thrilled.”
Noel Chance, trainer of Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Looks Like Trouble, who faded away to finish ninth, said: ”At least he has come back ok, and he ran a blinder. I think he was just too fat looking at him beforehand - he was as fat as the trainer!
“If he is alright he will go for the new race at Warwick, which has been specially framed for him.”
HIGHLIGHTS SO FAR
Even with one day remaining, Mark Johnston looks like having this year’s Ascot trainer’s title wrapped up, and, with five winners already on the board, the Middleham handler, who topped the list 12 months ago with four, is enjoying the most successful Royal meeting since John Dunlop lifted the crown with the same score in 1995.
Johnston has produced a few aces in the two-year-old department, winning the Queen Mary with Attraction, the Chesham with Pearl Of Love and the Norfolk with Russian Valour, and he topped up those celebrations with Fantastic Love taking the King George V Handicap and Shanty Star staking a long-term claim for next year’s Gold Cup with a battling display in the Queen’s Vase.
There could hardly have been a more sensational start on Tuesday when Khalid Abdullah’s Three Valleys emulated the performance of Mill Reef 33 years ago when shredding his Coventry Stakes opponents with a scintillating eight-length victory.
However, historically even better was to come when Aussie challenger Choisir, who won’t be four until August, destroyed Europe’s top sprinters in the Group 2 King’s Stand Stakes, belying odds of 25-1 when becoming the first winner in Britain to be trained Down Under. And he is back today looking for more glory in the Golden Jubilee.
Mick Channon did not leave the car park until 10pm on the first day, but the West Ilsley trainer had good reason for extended celebrations, having roared himself hoarse as Zafeen bounced back to form with a brilliant display to beat unlucky-in-running Kalaman in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes.
The other Group 1 on the first day, the Queen Anne Stakes, was expected to fall to runaway Lockinge winner Hawk Wing, but the Ballydoyle superstar, who went off at 8-13, ran a lack-lustre race, albeit finishing lame, as Godolphin rejoiced over their 98th winner at the top level when Dubai Destination and Frankie Dettori bolted up by four lengths.
James Fanshawe celebrated his first Royal Ascot winner when Macadamia provided Dane O’Neill with a lucky spare ride in the Hunt Cup, but undoubtedly Wednesday’s star was Nayef, who blew Godolphin’s twin-pronged attack away with a superb victory in the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes, thereby setting himself up for a possible assault on the BHB Summer Triple Crown.
Paul Cole rates his Gold Cup triumph with Mr Dinos second only behind Generous in his training achievements, and the colt, given a fine enterprising ride by Kieren Fallon, who was also the Friday hero on Sagitta 1000 Guineas heroine Russian Rhythm in the Coronation Stakes, blitzed his rivals in the stayers’ crown.
The early exchanges between punters and bookmakers produced mixed results, but the Guinness was flowing freely after Dermot Weld’s In Time’s Eye had landed a massive gamble - 16-1 down to 5-1 - when providing Ireland with a belated first winner of the meeting in yesterday’s Wolferton Handicap.
GOING NEWS AT 10 AM
The going for the final day of the 2003 Royal meeting remains
FIRM
to which it was changed after the third race yesterday. There was no rain last night and the course was not watered.
Explaining his decision not to water, clerk of the course Nick Cheyne said: “the ground is firm, but the course is safe and riding very well.
“If you water at short notice on firm ground there is serious danger of the track becoming greasy and slippery and of producing patches of false ground which makes things less safe for the horses.”
BETTING NEWS
There has been plenty of activity in the day’s Group 1 race, the Golden Jubilee Stakes (3.45) with Ladbrokes reporting interest in three horses. Malhub has come in from 8-1 to 6-1, Belle du Jour from 25-1 to 16-1 and the American challenger Morluc from 33-1 to 20-1. Coral have had money for the same trio and have brought in Malhub from 15-2 to 6-1, Morluc to 16-1 from 25-1 and Belle du Jour from 40-1 to 25-1. Belle du Jour has been in demand with Victor Chandler (16-1 from 25-1) and Paddy Power (28-1 to 16-1), Malhub has come in from 15-2 to 6-1 with Powers and to the same price from 8-1 with William Hill, while Morluc has been cut from 33-1 to 16-1 by Powers and to the same price from 28-1 by the Tote.
In the big handicap of the day, the Wokingham Stakes (4.20), Coral and Powers have had good support for Vanderlin, who has been cut from 18-1 to 14-1 and to 11-1 respectively. There has also been strong support for Royal Millennium, who is at 10-1 from 25-1 with Chandlers, at the same odds with Powers and Hills from 18-1 to 20-1 respectively, and at 14-1 from 18-1 with the Tote. Chandlers have cut Patavellian to 4-1 from 6-1, and both they (33-1 to 25-1), the Tote (33-1 to 22-1) and Powers (28-1 to 20-1) have laid Onlytime Will Tell. The same two firms have cut Loyal Tycoon from 33-1 to 22-1 and 25-1 and Powers have trimmed Banjo Bay from 22-1 to 16-1.
Last year’s Hardwicke Stakes (3.05) winner Zindabad has been supported for a repeat success and is in from 13-2 to 4-1 with Powers and from 11-2 to 9-2 with Chandlers and Hills. Chandler and the Tote have had support for Balakheri, who has been trimmed from 25-1 to 20-1 and 14-1 from the same price respectively.
Powers have made Chic an even money chance from the morning 6-5 for the opening Sandringham Stakes (2.30), and in the Windsor Castle Stakes (4.55) they have done business over Holborn, who is now at 4-1 from 5-1.
CHAMPION JOCKEY BETTING
Kieren Fallon, who reached 100 for the year when Russian Rhythm won the Coronation Stakes yesterday for his second success at the meeting, is now at 4-6 (from 2-1) to be top jockey at the meeting. Richard Hughes and Kevin Darley, who both have three winners to their names, are at 3-1 (from 9-4) and 6-1 (from 10-1) respectively, with Frankie Dettori, who was a 7-4 shot 48 hours ago, out to 10-1. The other three riders with two wins, Darryll Holland, Johnny Murtagh and Martin Dwyer, are on 10-1, 25-1, and 50-1.
MORSE HOPEFUL OF A BIG RUN
Randy Morse, the trainer from the United States who is having his first runner in England with Morluc in the Golden Jubilee Stakes this afternoon, is hopeful of a very big run from his seven-year-old.
Morse, who is based in Kentucky and took up training when he succeeded his father Charlie 23 years ago at the age of 18, has no doubt that Morluc “is a good horse,” and the way in which he emphaises the word ‘good’ leaves you in no doubt about his opinion.
“If this race was in America I would really fancy him very strongly,” he said. “But I am sure he will go really well and he will love the fast ground.
“We first thought about coming over to England last year, but then changed our minds. Caller One was supposed to run and we didn’t really want to go against him.
“The idea of coming has been at the back of our minds ever since, all the more so as there are hardly any Grade 1 sprints in the United States, and a Group 1 win will be a big help when we want to make the horse into a stallion.
“Morluc came over to England nine days ago and has been lodging with Geoff Wragg at Newmarket (Abington Place has also been the base for Tuesday’s King’s Stand Stakes winner from Australia, Choisir, who is due to run again today), and has done really well since he has been over here.”
MORE BETTING NEWS
Cashmans is another firm to report money for Zindabad in the Hardwicke Stakes (3.05) and they have cut last year’s winner by a point to 4-1.
They say that Airwave is a “very strong” 11-10 shot for the Golden Jubilee Stakes (3.45) and are standing a £4,000 double over her at 9-4 and yesterday’s Coronation Stakes winner Russian Rhythm at SP (4-7).
Their horse for money in the Wokingham is The Tatling, whose price has been halved from 18--1 to 9-1, and they have also done business over Holborn, who is now at 7-2 from 5-1.
