£20,000 Oaks and Derby double to win £¼ million
The serious Derby betting has begun in earnest with a Ladbrokes telephone punter today staking £10,000 each-way on a bold Classic double.
"Our customer has backed Alamshar at 4/1 and Hi Dubai at 7/2 to win £225,000," said Balthazar Fabricius of Ladbrokes. "Alamshar is now 7/2 and it is refreshing to see some money coming for something other than an O'Brien trained horse," added Fabricius.

THREE ADDED TO £1.47 MILLION VODAFONE DERBY
Dutch Gold, Kris Kin and Norse Dancer were today each supplemented at a cost of £90,000 for Saturday's Vodafone Derby - in which 21 other horses remain at the five-day confirmation stage - to increase the prize money for the premier classic to £1.47 million, making it the richest race ever run in Europe.
Dutch Gold, trained by Clive Brittain for Sheikh Marwan Al Maktoum, won the Group 3 Victor Chandler Chester Vase last time out, Saeed Suhail's Kris Kin, from Sir Michael Stoute's stable, also scored at Chester in the Group 3 Philip Leverhulme Dee Stakes, while Norse Dancer belied his 100/1 odds to finish a close third to another Vodafone Derby hope, Refuse To Bend, in the Sagitta 2000 Guineas. Owner Jeff Smith believes the David Elsworth-trained colt could be the best he has owned.
All the main contenders remain in the Vodafone Derby including the Irish-trained trio Alamshar, Brian Boru and Refuse To Bend who are all vying for favouritism. Saturday's race promises to be one of the best renewals of the Vodafone Derby in recent years.
Brian Boru's trainer Aidan O'Brien, who has won the last two runnings of the Vodafone Derby with High Chaparral (2002) and Galileo (2001), has four other horses still in the race - Alberto Giacometti, Balestrini, Handel and The Great Gatsby.
If O'Brien saddles all five runners, that would be unprecedented in the recent history of the Derby while trainers who have had four runners in one year since 1965 are Ryan Price (1975), Sir Michael Stoute (1994), Saeed bin Suroor (2000) and Barry Hills (2001).
Other leading contenders include Tote Dante Stakes winner Magistretti, Sandown Park Classic Trial victor Shield, Franklins Gardens, winner of trials at Epsom Downs and Lingfield this season, Lingfield runner-up Let Me Try Again, trained in Epsom by Terry Mills, while Frankie Dettori's bid for a first win in the Vodafone Derby looks to rest on one of the two remaining entries from Godolphin, New South Wales and Graikos.
Stephen Wallis, Managing Director at Epsom Downs Racecourse, said today: "The three supplementary entries add further spice to a great renewal of the Vodafone Derby and we would like to acknowledge the sporting gesture from the horses' owners.
"Now with total prize money of £1.47 million, the 2003 Vodafone Derby will be the richest race ever run in the history of European horse racing."
Andrew Cooper, Clerk of the Course at Epsom Downs Racecourse, added: "The going is currently Good, Good To Firm in places, following four millimetres of rain from mid-afternoon on Sunday through until this morning.
"We have been dry since then and are not forecast any rain until Wednesday, after which it could become a bit more unsettled."
There is a safety limit of 20 runners in the Vodafone Derby and, if more than that number are declared on Thursday at the final declaration stage, the lowest rated declarations will be balloted out.

TWO GREAT DAYS AT SALISBURY RACECOURSE
Salisbury Racecourse opens its doors for exciting horseracing action twice in the space of six days - on Tuesday, June 10 and Sunday, June 15.
The latter date is the second and final opportunity of the year for racegoers to come and enjoy a great Sunday out at the races at the beautiful Wiltshire racecourse. The initial contest on the Sunday six-race programme is due off at 2pm.
Entertainments on the Sunday include the Freefall Parachute Team of the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment and the Lucknow Band of the Prince of Wales's Division. Younger racegoers, who gain free entry if under 16 and accompanied by an adult, can enjoy a number of children's entertainments and a creche will also be in operation. The gates open at 11am.
Axminster Carpets, a great supporter of the racecourse, sponsors the Sunday feature contest, the £34,000 Listed Axminster Carpets Cathedral Stakes (3.30pm) over six furlongs for three-year-olds and upwards.
The inaugural running of this Listed sprint in 2002 was won by the Toby Balding-trained Palace Affair and the victory was the first leg of a marvellous treble for the Pursuit Of Love filly who then won Listed races at Sandown and York.
The Sunday card also features the £14,000-added Alan Blencowe Motor Racing Rated Handicap Stakes (2.30pm) over one mile and six furlongs for three-year-olds rated 0-95.
Last year Seaborne's success in the equivalent race was a popular victory for local handler Roger Charlton, who trains at the historic Beckhampton House in Marlborough.
Another competitive handicap on the programme is the £10,000-added Tote Placepot Handicap Stakes (3.00pm) over five furlongs for three-year-olds and upwards rated 0-85.
The James Eustace-trained Greenwood treated racegoers to a marvellous finish last season, just holding on by a short-head from Law Breaker who finished like a train and probably would have prevailed in another stride.
Two other races are the opening £8,000-added Army Benevolent Fund City Bowl Fillies' Handicap Stakes (2.00pm) over one mile and four furlongs and the mile £8,000-added Chamber Of Commerce Maiden Fillies' Stakes (4.00pm).
The seven-race programme on Tuesday, June 10, features the £17,000-added EBF Margadale Classified Stakes (3.45pm) for three-year-olds over a mile and two furlongs.
An almighty cheer went up from the crowd last season when Pat Eddery hit the front in this event on the Amanda Perrett-trained Dawn Invasion who stayed on bravely to justify favouritism from Stratus.
The other big race on the Tuesday programme is the £14,000-added Tote Jackpot Handicap Stakes (3.15pm) over six furlongs for three-year-olds and upwards rated 0-90.
Once again a sprint at Salisbury provided a thrilling finish when Kathology, trained by David Elsworth, made all and just held off Manorbier by a short-head in 2002.
The opening £5,250-added Eddie Reavey Maiden Auction Stakes (2.15pm) over six furlongs honours the late trainer while other sponsored races are the seven-furlong £5,000-added Levy Board Handicap Stakes (4.45pm) and the £5,250-added Robin Vaughan, Faucets A Lifetime In Racing' Amateur Riders Handicap Stakes (5.15pm) over a mile and four furlongs.
Salisbury Racecourse prides itself on the welcome it provides for racegoers and last year won the Racegoers' Club award for being the best small racecourse in the South-West.
Jeremy Martin, Salisbury's Clerk of the Course and Racecourse Manager, said: "We are looking forward to the second running of the Axminster Carpets Cathedral Stakes on Sunday, June 15. This sprint event is one of five Listed races being held at Salisbury this season."
Admission prices on both Tuesday, June 10, and Sunday, June 15, are Members £16, Tattersalls £10, Course £5, and, as at all Salisbury's meetings, accompanied children under 16 are admitted FREE to all enclosures. Car parking is also FREE. A big-screen will be in operation at both fixtures to assist spectators in following their fancies.
DONCASTER'S 'DERBY DAY' SATURDAY MEETING
It's 'Derby Day' at Doncaster this Saturday (7 June), when racegoers will be able to follow all of the action from Epsom 'live' on the giant Mitsubishi Diamond Vision Screen situated opposite the main stands. The big race, The Vodafone Derby takes place at 4 o'clock, and there will be an extended interval of 55 minutes between the fourth and fifth races at Doncaster enabling racegoers to concentrate fully on the Derby, which was won last year by High Chaparral, who had won the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster as a two-year-old prior to his glory day at Epsom.
A leading contender for Derby honours on Saturday is last season's Racing Post Trophy winner, Brian Boru.
The High Chaparral Handicap Stakes (run over the Derby distance of one mile and a half) and The Worthington's Conditions Stakes over one mile and a quarter) head a quality programme at Doncaster, which also includes The Alfea San Rossore Handicap Stakes - a contest over seven furlongs which emphasises the links between the Pisa-based San Rossore racecourse and Doncaster racecourse in association with The Northern Racing College at Rossington Hall near Doncaster. Alfea is the management company of San Rossore racecourse which also administers facilities for training apprentice riders.
Racing on Saturday at Doncaster starts at 1.50 p.m. Musical entertainment is provided by both The West Yorkshire Fire Service Band in the main betting hall and The Tom Roberts Jazz Band. There are bouncy castles and a supervised creche facility (£1.80 per hour) in the Family Enclosure.
The afternoon's full-colour racecard will contain a special competition for racegoers, held in association with 'Go Racing in Yorkshire' on the nine Yorkshire tracks this year. The overall competition winner - announced at the GRIY Annual Lunch in December - will receive a holiday for two in Spain, courtesy of Planet Air and Ripon Travel. Saturday's winner will receive Tote betting vouchers and a copy of 'Travelling The Turf 2003' and will go into the big draw for the holiday prize.
