ROYAL ASCOT 2003
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
FOURTH DAY, FRIDAY, JUNE 20
GOING CHANGED TO FIRM
The going was changed to
FIRM
on all parts of the course after the third race.
Nick Cheyne, Ascot’s Clerk of the Course, said: “I have changed the ground to firm and I’m not going to water tonight, having watered on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
“The ground is riding safe and consistent and I don’t want to mess it about and end up getting false ground by putting more water on.”
RECORD FRIDAY CROWD
Today’s crowd of 68,508 is a new record for the Friday of Royal Ascot.
The attendance is up 7.7% from last year’s figure of 63,604, with 60,862 seen in 2001.
TOTE TURNOVER
For the third day running the Tote’s turnover has soared past the £2million mark, with a total of £2,009,455.
This represents an increase of 16.2% over last year’s £1,729,106.
SATURDAY GRANDSTAND SOLD OUT - DECISION ON FORMAT OF 2004 EXPECTED LATER IN THE YEAR
Grandstand tickets are sold out for tomorrow, Saturday, June 21, the fifth day of Royal Ascot 2003.
However, there is plenty of availability in the Silver Ring (£16) and the Heath (£4) and people can pay on the day for both enclosures.
This is the second five-day Royal Meeting, last year having been so successful as a celebration of Her Majesty The Queen’s Golden Jubilee.
Ascot Racecourse has yet to make a decision about the format for 2004 and beyond. A decision for 2004 is expected later in the year.
SATURDAY EXTRAVAGANZA AWAITS
The fifth and final day of the Royal Meeting, Saturday, June 21, proved highly-popular when held for the first time 12 months ago and racegoers can look forward to plenty of top-class racing action tomorrow.
A six-race programme, which features the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes at 3.45pm, also has one of the most exciting handicaps of the Flat season, the Wokingham Stakes (4.20pm), which has attracted a maximum field of 30 runners.
This six-furlong event has proved so popular this season that no less than 47 other horses have had to be eliminated for safety reasons.
The Roger Charlton-trained Patavellian, who has been the subject of a massive gamble, has been guaranteed a run in the contest. The son of Machiavellian had been left in today’s Buckingham Palace Stakes as a precaution of being eliminated from the Wokingham.
Patavellian has now been withdrawn from today’s race and Charlton faces a fine for doing so.
The concluding contest of the Royal Meeting, the Queen Alexandra Stakes (5.30pm), has the honour of being the longest event of the Flat campaign over two miles and six furlongs.
Last season Newmarket-trainer Sir Michael Stoute sent home Royal Ascot racegoers in a festive mood after his Cover Up had justified favouritism in the hands of champion jockey Kieren Fallon. The six-year-old is again among the 14 runners, while two other intriguing contenders are Domenico, trained by John Jenkins, who will be ridden by American jockey and filmstar Gary Stevens - already a winner this week on Membership in the Jersey Stakes - and Looks Like Trouble, the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup winner in 2000.
The Group Two Hardwicke Stakes also features last year’s winner in the form of the Mark Johnston-trained Zindabad, who kept on gamely in the final furlong to beat subsequent Group One Emirates Airline Champion Stakes winner Storming Home by a length.
The 2002 King Edward VII Stakes hero Balakheri, trained by Stoute, and the Tim Easterby-trained Bollin Eric, who won last season’s St Leger, are among Zindabad’s nine rivals.
FIRST RACE WINNING QUOTES
THE ALBANY STAKES (LISTED)
SILCA’S LEADS 1-2 FOR CHANNON
The 5/1 chance Silca’s Gift beat her more-fancied stablemate Tolzey, the 100/30 favourite, to give trainer Mick Channon a 1-2 in the opening Listed Albany Stakes.
“She’s a lovely big scopey filly but the other is real street fighter,” said Channon. “This was obviously the race for both of them to go for because there are not a lot of choices.
“We’ll give her a bit of time and then probably take the Lowther/Cheveley Park Stakes routes, and that will be it. That’s what I’ve done before with my good fillies.
“She won nicely at Windsor first time out when Steve (Drowne) missed the ride because he was stuck in traffic.
“The second has done nothing wrong, she’s very streetwise although I thought the winner had more potential. It’s a shame that the second was well beaten because she was well clear!”
Winning rider Steve Drowne said: “She travelled well, settled, had enough gears so I let her have a fill of air then she picked up well to the line.
“She could be anything and gave me a fill that everything was not all there. Another six weeks will do her a lot of good.”

THIRD AT ROYAL MEETING WITH
FIRST RUNNER IN ENGLAND
Rupert Pritchard-Gordon, a son of former trainer Gavin, saddled his first runner in England courtesy of Malaica, who did not let the Chantilly-based trainer down finishing the eight-length third to Silca’s Gift.
“I’m very pleased and it was a good run,” enthused the trainer. “It was her first time in England which is not easy. She’s got a good attitude and tactical speed.
“We had to have her dropped in to give her a chance early on. She ran a little green and when a gap came she was a little hesitant. I thought she might have got a knock on the nose as well although when I spoke to Thierry [Gillet, jockey] he said that she didn’t.
“She may have felt the ground as well - if it had been soft ground, she might have been close.”
Pritchard-Gordon began training last year after nine years with Criquette Head-Maarek. He has 14 horses in at the moment.
“I’ve also got Arvada who is a proper filly and was third in the Prix Saint-Alary, the race Hi Dubai finished second in and Summitville was behind her. She will be a force in the autumn and will run at Deauville at the end of August after one more run,” explained the handler.
“I’ve also got a nice two-year-old called Sister Moonshine - I’m not sure if she’ll run in England, my aim is to go for races that suit them.
“As for Malaica I didn’t have many options for her - there’s very few opportunities in France between April and July and the programme there is limited for horses which have won their maiden and a conditions race,” explained Pritchard-Gordon.
“We wanted to have a go here and this was the plan - she’s got the speed and I knew that she would travel through the race.”
Jockeys were in no doubt about the state of the ground. “It’s fast,” said Philip Robinson; “Firm,” said Martin Dwyer with emphasis; “Very firm, fast,” said Darryll Holland.
FALLON SUSPENDED ON IRISH DERBY DAY
Kieren Fallon has been suspended for one day - Sunday, June 29 - for careless riding in the opener on Lucayan Beauty. However, the champion jockey will be able to apply to the Jockey Club for special dispensation to ride in the classic and it is likely to be granted.
Stipendiary steward William Nunnely said: “Kieren Fallon has got one day for careless riding - he allowed his horse to drift in to George Duffield’s who then went into Michael Hills’. The other bit of interference was the French horse just getting into a bit of trouble.
“The date is Sunday, June 29, which of course is the day of the Irish Derby. He can just ask the Jockey Club if they would allow him to ride in the Irish Derby because it is a Group One. His supension would then move to another day. I don’t think it will be a problem.
“Our dispenation only gets jockeys off a Group One race in this country but Ireland is not far away and it would not be our intention of stopping him riding in a Group One race anywhere for a one-day suspension. “

WINNING QUOTES
TREGONING DOUBLES UP AT ROYAL MEETING
Marcus Tregoning gained his second winner of the 2003 Royal Meeting after High Accolade had beaten Delsarte by two lengths. He won the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes on Wednesday courtesy of Nayef.
“He’s still a bit green and he’s come on so much after each race. He handles fast ground so well and he’s obviously a very good horse who is improving,” said the trainer.
“To get a mile and four furlongs at Ascot you have to stay well and he was still going away at the finish. I will put him in the St Leger and he’ll go in all of the good races now but the ground is quite an issue and I want to bear next year in mind as well.”
Connections had considered supplementing him for £90,000 for the Vodafone Derby.
“I didn’t feel that it was the right thing to pay that sort of money as he is still green and you don’t want a green horse in the Derby,” explained Tregoning.
Asked how he would have got on at Epsom, the handler replied: “Oh he would have won it! No seriously I don’t know - Kris Kin is very lightly raced and could be a big improver. Which is the best? Who knows but I think this horse is massively improved and he’s beaten some here easier than Kris Kin has.”
Tregoning was full of praise for jockey Martin Dwyer.
“I can’t give Martin enough plaudits. He’s done well for the Baldings as well who raised him so I can’t take the credit for that but he gave this horse a super ride and you have got to know him very well,” he continued.
“I can’t think of any jockey I’d rather have on him as he takes some knowing.”
One member of the press scrum surrounding Tregoning questioned whether High Accolade was an idle type of horse.
He replied: “No, I think it was greenness and he was getting the hang of it. I had a good feeling he would get up and win.”
Winning rider Martin Dwyer added: “He’s an amazing horse and is quite a tricky ride. He hates being crowded and does nothing behind but has some acceleration to quicken like he did.
“They went very quickly and I wanted to keep tabs on them. The gap appeared in the straight and when he gets there he idles. He does nothing at home and saves it for the track.”
Nayef has come out of the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes well.
“He cantered this morning as the Eclipse [Stakes at Sandown] is not far away. But the main race for him in my mind is the King George [VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot] and I hope [Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum, owner] agrees. On what he has achieved, he must have a reasonable chance of winning that race,” reported Tregoning.
PLACED QUOTES RACE TWO
KING EDWARD V11 STAKES
JOHNSTON VERY PLEASED
Mark Johnston was highly delighted with the effort by runner-up Delsarte, who was never out of the first two in the King Edward V11 Stakes, though in the end he had to accept a two lengths defeat at the hands of High Accolade.
“We really did not know what to expect this time against this level of opposition, but he has run really well,” he said. “This was only his third race and he showed his greenness by the way in which he was hanging early in the straight.
“Keith (Dalgleish) said afterwards that they went very fast down the hill in the early stages and he was wondering whether it might be better to take him back to a mile and a quarter, but we shall have to talk more about all that before making any decisions.
“He is in the Eclipse and the King George. If he had won this then the King George would have looked an obvious step and you would be kicking yourself for not having entered him; the same goes for the Eclipse, all the more with Keith saying what he did about going back to a mile and a quarter.”
Robert Sangster was very pleased with the effort by his third placed Summerland, who was blinkered for the first time.
“That was a good effort,” he said. “I expect we shall put him away now and bring him back for the Voltigeur (at York in August). He has run really well.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE THREE
CORONATION STAKES
RELIEF ALL ROUND
“I am very relieved that it is all over, but it was a very good performance,” said Sir Michael Stoute after Russian Rhythm had stormed home in the day’s big race, the Coronation Stakes, confirming in the process the 1,000 Guineas form with Soviet Song, who was fourth at Newmarket and runner-up here.
“You have to be a Group 1 performer to win Group 1 races and she has certainly performed like that today. She rather surprised us when she won at Newmarket, but she has been training well since then.
“They went a bit of a pedestrian pace for the first furlong and a half and she was a bit keen, but then Gary (Stevens on stablemate Fantasize) made sure that it was a decent one.
“She came there very smoothly and it was a top class performance. I can’t see any reason to go any further with her, at least at the moment. She is in the Sussex Stakes and that is the obvious race to look at for her. Kieren has always been adamant that a mile is her trip.”
The trainer’s relief at the result was shared by Chris Richardson, managing director for the owners, Cheveley Park Stud. “It was quite a worry that no 1,000 Guineas winner has gone on to win this since One In A Million in 1979, and she only got the race in the stewards’ room,” he said.
Cashmans put the filly in at 14-1 for the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita in October.
Jockey Kieren Fallon added: “There is something about this race which scares you - not enough pace maybe or the other jockeys trying to get you beat - thank God it’s all over.
“When I kicked by Steve [Drowne, rider of Mail The Desert] I didn’t think anything could get by me. If Oscar [Urbina, rider of Soviet Song] had got close I would have found another gear.”
Asked if his charge might stay further than a mile, he replied: “Very, very hard to say. She travels well and quickens and shows so much speed but saying that you do have trouble pulling her up.
“She feels like one that you could take on the colts with but that is something that I don’t like - however I know that there are no options but to do that. She feels like a colt when you ride her and I don’t think she got the credit she deserved when winning the Guineas - all the talk was of the French jockey.”
THIRD RACE PLACED QUOTES
CORONATION STAKES
SOVIET ON SONG IN SECOND
Russian Rhythm led home a 1-2-3 of previous Group 1 winners when beating Soviet Song and Mail The Desert in the Coronation Stakes but the trainers of both the second and third were more than happy with the result.
James Fanshawe, who trains Soviet Song for the Elite Racing Club, said: “You never like to get beaten but I’m thrilled with that. To be honest I was very disappointed when we were only fourth in the Guineas but my horses were a bit sick at the time.
“I’d like to get her winning first before we think about taking on Russian Rhythm again. We have the advantage in the autumn that we know she goes on soft ground, so we have something up our sleeves.”
Mail The Desert, winner of last season’s Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes, made a promising return when third sporting the silks of her new owner, Klaus Jacobs’s Newsells Park Stud, to the delight of trainer Mick Channon.
“As I said before the race, she was in great form,” said Channon. “She did everything right and Steve (Drowne) wasn’t hard on her when she wasn’t going to get second. I’d have been disappointed if she had not been in the first four, really there were only three in it, who were all Group 1 winners, although I suppose you could say there was only one horse really in it.
“She’s great little filly to train and we didn’t even try to run in the Guineas, she was very hairy in her coat then and the plan was always to come here. At least she’s proved she’s a nice filly as everyone was trying to write her off.
“We’ve got some nice options with her and we might even go back to a stiff seven furlongs or otherwise an easy mile.”
FOURTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
WOLFERTON RATED STAKES
IN TIME’S EYE LANDS GAMBLE
The Dermot Weld-trained In Time’s Eye landed the biggest gamble of the meeting when backed from 16/1 in the morning into 5/1 and winning the Wolferton Rared Stakes to give Ireland a first success of the week.
“He had the form in Group 1 company to win the race and when people digested that I think they realised. He was rated 108 so he had the figures,” said the Rosewell House handler. “People know we don’t just come here for the sunshine and 16/1 was a little bit generous.
“He’s a top of the ground horse and a half-brother to Go And Go, my Belmont winner on the dirt. He ran a good race on soft ground when fourth in the Tattersalls Gold Cup and today was the day.
“I think he will be better over a mile and a half and his future will involve some journeys abroad when he gets decent ground.”
Winning rider Pat Smullen said: “We were never in any danger of getting beaten. He’s very laid back and reserves everything for when you need it. We’ll look forward to the end of the year.”
Stan Cosgrove, manager of owner Moyglare Stud, added: “He’s very good - last year we thought he was a Derby horse but then he got injured. He then had another problem but he’s right back now and I’m thrilled.”
FOURTH RACE PLACED QUOTES
WOLFERTON RATED STAKES
PERSIAN LIGHTNING JUST DENIED
John Dunlop just missed out on his first success of this year’s Royal Meeting when Persian Lightning went down by a neck to Irish raider In Time’s Eye.
The Arundel trainer commented: “I’m delighted - he was drawn way out wide [3] which is a big disadvantage but he got the breaks and I thought that he was going to get there.”
Persian Lightning finished fourth behind Hazim on his last start at Redcar in the Zetland Gold Cup, a contest from which two winners have subsequently emerged.
“The Zetland Gold Cup must have been a very good contest. This is a grand, genuine horse who loves fast, really firm ground and one miles two furlongs.
“I’m very pleased as I think they like the third a lot [favourite Akshar].”
WINNING QUOTES RACE FIVE
QUEEN’S VASE
JOHNSTON KEEPS FINDING MORE
Mark Johnston is now three clear of his nearest rivals at the head of the leading trainers for the 2003 Royal Meeting with five successes after Shanty Star had beaten favourite Singleton by three-quarters of a length. This is the highest number of wins since John Dunlop was leading trainer at the meeting in 1995 with five successes.
“I thought that he was always going better than anything else in the race and I knew that he would stay the two miles,” he said. “My horses are not used to running up the back of other horses and Kevin [Darley, jockey] had to keep niggling him along. He was tending to fall back and kept getting pushed wider and wider. All credit to the horse - with a clear run he would have won comfortably.”
Shanty Star last appeared in the Lingfield Derby Trial, finishing the 11 and a half length third behind Franklins Gardens.
“Ever since he was a yearling he was Joe Mercer’s [racing manager to Maktoum Al Maktoum] favourite horse. This belief in the horse took a bit of a bang at Lingfield when we shelved all ideas of Derbys,” explained the trainer.
“To be fair though that was a freakish race and he was one of the horses there that had run their race in the first mile and he was not involved in the finish.”
The trainer views Shanty Star as a potential Gold Cup horse for next year but in the meantime he has to consider the St Leger for the son of Hector Protector.
“I thought that he should be one of my bankers of the meeting and as he stays every inch of this trip, I don’t know if he’ll come back to one mile six furlongs for the St Leger,” he said. “I will go home and think about it.”
This was Johnston’s second Queen’s Vase victory following And Beyond’s success in 2001.
PLACED QUOTES RACE FIVE
QUEEN’S VASE
CECIL VERY PLEASED
“I was really pleased with that,” declared Henry Cecil after Singleton, the only filly in the race, had gone down by no more than three-quarters of a length to favoured Shanty Star in the Queen’s Vase.
“That was only her third run and I think she has run a lovely race,” he added. “The ground was probably a bit firm for her and she perhaps did not let herself down as much as she might have done, but I am really delighted.
“This hasn’t perhaps been my best Royal Ascot -- it’s not quite the same as having five or six winners -- but it certainly could have been worse,” he added, indicating that the Park Hill Stakes could be the sort of race he would look at for Singleton.
John Oxx was very happy with the effect that first time blinkers had on third placed Cruzspiel. “He fell out of the stalls but against that he got a good run through,” he said. “He loves this fast ground and we might decide to give him a go in the Irish Derby next weekend.”
Saeed bin Suroor, trainer of fourth-placed New South Wales, said: “He ran a good race but probably needs to softer ground to have a better chance.
“We will probably drop him back in trip as well. He’s a backward horse, we’ll look after him this season and he could be better next year.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE SIX
BUCKINGHAM PALACE HANDICAP
ATTACHE DEFIES WEIGHT AND DRAW
“That was a really good handicap performance under 9st 12lb,” said Michael Jarvis after Attache had lumped 9st 12lb to victory in the closing Buckingham Palace Handicap. “He is a really good, honest horse and loves a strong gallop.
“I was very annoyed when I learned yesterday that he was drawn 30, right over on the far side. That was until I saw the last race last night when the winner came from that side, and I realised that you could win from there.
“I was sure that it was no good being two or three horses off the rail, you had to be right against it, so I told Philip (Robinson) to make sure he got there. When Attache ran in a Listed race at Haydock last time they went no pace and then turned the race into a sprint, which is no good to him.
“I suppose he will now have to carry 10st in the Bunbury Cup (one of the trainer’s favourite races), and I really am not making any plans at the moment. We may have to go back into Listed races, but then again he may be better carrying big weights in hard handicaps like this.”
Martin Pipe, trainer of runner-up Hurricane Floyd, said: “he ran a great race and got a brilliant ride from Gary Stevens) -- he couldn’t have done any better. The horse thinks he’s won and we won’t get a 7lb penalty. I’ve only had the horse for about three weeks, and have no idea where we’ll go, but I am delighted with him.”
STEVENS SUSPENDED FOR ONE DAY
Gary Stevens has been suspended for one day on Sunday, June 29, 2003, for not allowing his mount, Hurricane Floyd, who finished runner-up in the Buckingham Palace Stakes, time to respond to the whip.
Should Stevens be riding in a Grade One race in the United States on that day, he will be given the same facility that Kieren Fallon received when he was given the same ban earlier in the day i.e. he will be allowed to ride and serve his ban on a different date.

GOING NEWS AT 10 AM
The going for the fourth day of the Royal meeting is
GOOD TO FIRM, FIRM IN PLACES,
as it was after racing last night
“We watered the straight course and on the round course up the hill from the Old Mile under the trees, putting on about three to four millimetres,” said clerk of the course Nick Cheyne.
“The forecast for today is for another dry and sunny day.”
BETTING NEWS
The withdrawals of horses like Alberto Giacometti, Nashaab and Patavellian have resulted in re-formed markets for several races, but business has still been brisk in the offices, and in the opening Albany Stakes (2.30) Imperialistic has been popular with Paddy Power and Cashmans, who have both brought her in from 9-1 to 8-1.
Big Bad Bob and Highdown have been in demand in the King Edward V11 Stakes (3.05). Coral have trimmed Highdown from 7-2 to 3-1, and Victor Chandler have brought in Big Bad Bob from 5-2 to 9-4. The Tote have cut Big Bad Bob from 11-4 to 9-4, and Cashmans have shortened Private Charter by a point to 9-1.
Coral punters have been supporting Russian Rhythm in the Coronation Stakes (3.45) as if there is no such thing as settling day, and they have forced her from 1-2 to 2-5, reporting no interest in any of her rivals, but Chandlers have a different tale and report money for Duty Paid from 28-1 to 22-1. Paddy Powers have laid Soviet Song from 11-2 to 5-1 and Proxima from 25-1 to 20-1. William Hill report Soviet Song in demand from 13-2 to 5-1.
In Time’s Eye has caught the fancy in the Wolferton Handicap (4.20) and he has been cut from 12-1 to 8-1 by Chandler, from 16-1 to 9-1 by Powers, from 12-1 to 9-1 by Ladbrokes, from 16-1 to 9-1 by Hills and from 14-1 to 10-1 by Coral, who also report strong support for the favourite Akshar, who is in from 9-4 to 15-8. Binary File has also been popular with Powers who have brought him in from 11-1 to 9-1, with Hills who have trimmed him from 11-1 to 8-1, the Tote, who have brought him in from 11-1 to 8-1, and Cashmans, where he is at the same price from 10-1.
In the Queen’s Vase (4.55) Santando has been in demand with Chandler, who have brought him in from 8-1 to 5-1, and Coral have done business over Shanty Star who has been cut by half a point to 3-1. Both horses have been backed with Powers, Shanty Star from 6-1 to 7-2 and Santando from 8-1 to 5-1, though much of this business coincided with the withdrawal of Arundel. The Tote have cut Shanty Star from 11-2 to 7-2 and Cashmans have brought in Icklingham from 10-1 to 9-1.
All sorts of horses have been backed in the closing Buckingham Palace Handicap (5.30), though the withdrawals of Patavellian and Nashaab will mean deductions under Rule 4. Chandler and the Tote report interest in Taranaki from 50-1 to half that price and from 40-1 to 20-1 respectively, Coral have laid Camberley from 18-1 to 11-1, Attache from 33-1 to 20-1 and Hurricane Floyd from 33-1 to 18-1, and Powers detail support for Green Line (by half a point to 6-1), Digital (25-1 to 16-1), Attache (20-1 from 33-1), Hurricane Floyd (25-1 to 20-1) and Najeebon (33-1 to 25-1). Ladbrokes have cut Attache from 33-1 to 20-1, Camberley from 16-1 to 12-1 and Hurricane Floyd
TOP JOCKEY BETTING
Kieren Fallon, who got off the mark when Mr Dinos won the Gold Cup yesterday, is now 2-1 favourite with Paddy Power to be top jockey at the meeting.
Richard Hughes, the current leader on three, is at 9-4 (from 7-2), but yesterday’s favourite Frankie Dettori has gone for a long walk from 7-4 to 4-1.
They then offer 7-1 about Darryll Holland, 8-1 against Johnny Murtagh and 10-1 Kevin Darley (from 25-1) with 40 bar.
