A HISTORY OF THE GOLDEN JUBILEE STAKES
Royal Ascot’s most prestigious sprint was given a new name and elevated to Group One status to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002. The contest was formerly run as the Cork and Orrery Stakes. The inaugural running in 1868 of this six-furlong contest, originally named after Lord Cork, a Master of the Buckhounds, was won by a horse called Laneret, ridden by George Fordham.
A winner of this prestigious race who was something of a Royal Ascot specialist was the Harvey Leader-trained Diomedes. He was successful in the 1926 renewal, having won two races including the King’s Stand Stakes at the Royal Meeting the previous year.
There has been one three-time winner, Prince Charlie (1872, 1873 and 1874), and five dual winners - Lowlander (1875 and 1876), Whitefriar (1886 and 1887), Hornet’s Beauty (1913 and 1914), Hamlet (1923 and 1924) and Right Boy (1958 and 1959). The latter, who was ridden by Lester Piggott on both occasions, was trained for his first victory by Malton-based Bill Dutton and the following year by his son-in-law Pat Rohan, who took over the licence following Dutton’s death. Rohan and Piggott also won the 1960 race with Tin Whistle.
In 1951, the year in which the Festival of Britain was celebrated, Australian jockey Neville Sellwood had an amazing Royal Ascot in his first season in Britain, gaining four victories, including the Cork and Orrery Stakes on board the Lord Sefton-owned Bob Cherry.
Many racing enthusiasts consider Vincent O’Brien to be the greatest trainer in the history of this illustrious sport. The Irish handler was successful in this race on five occasions with Welsh Saint (1970), Saritamer (1974), Thatching (1979), Swingtime (1975) and College Chapel (1993). All bar Swingtime, the mount of Willie Carson, were ridden by Lester Piggott, who was 57 when winning on College Chapel, a final Royal Ascot victory for both the trainer and jockey.
O’Brien is the most successful trainer in the race followed by Joseph Dawson, who won four of the five renewals between 1870 and 1874, and John Porter, who notched up four successes between 1884 and 1895. Among current trainers, Richard Hannon, Dermot Weld and Fulke Johnson Houghton have all won the race twice.
Piggott is the most successful rider in the history of the race with nine successes (between 1958 and 1993), followed by Fred Archer on six (1878 to 1886), Morny Cannon (1893 to 1898), Steve Donoghue (1920 to 1935) and Willie Carson (1972 to 1996) on five wins, and Sir Gordon Richards on four (1949 to 1954). Michael Hills, with two wins, is the only current rider to have won the race more than once.
The then 19-year-old Walter Swinburn began what was to be a memorable day for his family in 1981 by winning the Cork and Orrery Stakes on the Reg Hollinshead-trained The Quiet Bidder. Later on the same afternoon his father, Wally, went on to take the Norfolk Stakes for Irish trainer Dermot Weld on Day Is Done.
The 1989 winner Danehill, who was trained for Khalid Abdulla by Jeremy Tree, went on to win the Haydock Sprint Cup and to be one of the world’s top stallions. He is the perennial champion sire in Australasia and last season was second only to his Coolmore studmate, Sadler’s Wells. Tragically, Danehill died in a freak accident in May, 2003.
The last four winners of this event have all gone in at double-figure prices, but the beginning of the nineties was a golden era for favourite backers with four ‘jollies’ or joint-favourites winning between 1991 and 1994. During this period, Shalford struck for Richard Hannon in 1992 and the East Everleigh-based handler gained his second success seven years later with Bold Edge.
The 2001 renewal was won by the Roger Charlton-trained Harmonic Way who held on well, having gone to the front inside the final furlong to deny Three Points by a length. The son of Lion Cavern clearly loves sprinting at Royal Ascot as the previous season he was successful in the Wokingham Stakes. The first Group One running last season saw a terrific training performance by John Gosden, who nursed the fragile Malhub back to full fitness to score a 16/1 success.
AIRWAVE HEADS 23 IN INTERNATIONAL GOLDEN JUBILEE STAKES
Saturday’s Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes will feature runners trained in the United States, Australia, France and Ireland but it will be a filly based not far from Ascot who will start a warm favourite for the six-furlong event.
The three-year-old Airwave, trained at Kingstone Warren in Oxfordshire by Henry Candy, cost just 12,000gns as a yearling and has proved quite a bargain. Last season’s efforts were topped by a success in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes from subsequent Sagitta 1000 Guineas heroine Russian Rhythm and she made a remarkable seasonal comeback last month when left at the start in the Temple Stakes at Sandown then cruising through the field for a five-length success.
Choisir, trained north of Sydney by Paul Perry, became the first Australian-trained winner in Britain when winning the Group 2 King’s Stand Stakes on Tuesday and he bids to make another landmark by winning that race and the Golden Jubilee Stakes at the same meeting.
Other King’s Stand Stakes runners reappearing are Captain Rio, who finished seventh on Tuesday, Bahamian Pirate (8th), Peace Offering (13th) and Continent (15th).
Kentucky-based Randy Morse sends over the useful Morluc, who finished second to Falvelon in the 2001 International Sprint at Sha Tin in Hong Kong, while Zipping, who was just beaten into third in last year’s Group 1 Prix de l’Abbaye, represents French trainer Robert Collet, while Belle Du Jour, winner of the Golden Slipper when trained in Australia, is now with Dermot Weld in the Ireland and was beaten a neck at Cork on Sunday.
Malhub bids to become the first back-to-back winner of the race since Right Boy in 1958 and 1959 while the 2002 second and third, Danehurst and Three Points, re-oppose as does Continent, who finished fifth.
Three Point’s owners Godolphin look to be relying on Firebreak, winner of the Godolphin Mile at Nad Al Sheba in March, as a first string with Frankie Dettori in the saddle.
Just James, the mount of Olivier Peslier, made an excellent seasonal comeback when second in the Group 2 Duke of York Stakes at York to Twilight Blues, who has also not run since his success. The York third Polar Way also reopposes as does Steenberg, who finished sixth.
Nayyir, winner of last season’s Vodafone Diomed Stakes and Challenge Stakes at Newmarket, makes his seasonal return while Khulood, disappointed when last in the Sagitta 1000 Guineas but was previously an impressive winner of the Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket.
Danger Over, who was bought out of Pascal Bary’s stable for 85,000gns, made a successful first start for new trainer Jamie Osborne and owners Paul Dixon and Martin Myers’s Mountgrange Stud, when winning at Kempton in April.
Needwood Blade put in a career best effort to win the Palace House Stakes at Newmarket in May while Baron’s Pit already boasts a Royal Ascot success having landed last year’s Norfolk Stakes while the consistent Orientor represents Scottish trainer Jim Goldie.

NORFOLK STAKES
RUSHING VALOUR FOILS KHELEYF
The 8/13 favourite Kheleyf had to give second best to Russian Valour, who gave trainer Mark Johnston a third juvenile success of the meeting when winning the opening Norfolk Stakes under Kevin Darley.
“He was having his fifth run and was the most experienced horse in the field,” said Johnston. “You couldn’t be confident but I was very happy and couldn’t understand that yesterday it was being called a two-horse race (between Kheleyf and Old Deuteronomy) when our’s was the one with the form in the book. He was proven at Listed level and a proven fast horse.
“I thought he was too big early on and I don’t think I’ve ever trained a bigger horse of his class. He weighs in at 54 kilos more than Desert Deer and is nearly 100 kilos more than Mister Baileys when he won the Guineas.
“He came across to the rail very easily then just had a little lull when Kevin gave him a smack and he ran on again. It was very different from yesterday’s pair who I thought were always going to win because a furlong from home I thought this one was beaten.
“The filly (Attraction) is more of an out and out sprinter than this fellow, who should get six furlongs. Today was the target so I haven’t thought about plans for him.”
Jockey Kevin Darley added: “He jumped out well and got over to the fence. Once I was on the rail he never felt like he was going to get beaten. He’s got so much pace that he puts everybody at it early on. When he had to dig deep he went on.
“Mentally perhaps he has been a bit behind himself physically but today you saw the true Russian Valour. He ran straight for the first time.
“He looks like a jumper and he’s going to keep progressing.”

KHELEYF BIT TOO GREEN
The connections of odds-on favourite Kheleyf felt that inexperience may have been against him after he finished the one and three-quarter length runner-up to Russian Valour in today’s opener.
Kheleyf’s trainer David Loder said: “The race went perfectly - he came to win his race two furlongs out but didn’t know what to do. He was a bit at sea when Frankie [Dettori, jockey] asked him to go.
“He is a very nice horse and I am sure that he will prove it by the end of the year. We’ll probably step him up to six furlongs next time. The Gimcrack is a possibility but we’ll see how we go.”
Kheleyf’s ability had received a lot of column inches in the build-up to this contest.
“I feel it was a mistake to hype up an easy maiden winner at York. He then comes to Ascot against experienced horses over five furlongs and it’s a different ball game,” continued the Newmarket trainer.
The handler did give a hint of the regard that he has for his charge.
“It’s a long season and we’ll see what happens when we get to the Middle Park [Stakes, Group One event at Newmarket],” he added.
This was Loder’s third runner-up in juvenile races this week.
“I’ve learnt how to be a good loser,” quipped the trainer as he turned away.
Dettori revealed to connections that his mount had not run as well as he does on the gallops at home.
He said: “He just ran too green - I got there and he wasn’t getting down and racing like he does in the morning.”
Nevisian Lad did extremely well to finish a further three-quarters of a length adrift in third after a tardy start.
“I’m very happy and we’ll probably step him up to six furlongs now - the July Stakes [at Newmarket] is a possible and we’ll see how he is,” said trainer Michael Bell.
“He’s a bit rusty as he hasn’t run since April and we had a bit of a scare with him when he had a problem behind. But he is fine now.”
Jockeys’ thoughts on the ground were adamant. “It’s firm,” said Richard Hughes; “Fast,” said Pat Eddery.
SECOND RACE GROUP 2 RIBBLESDALE STAKES
WIN QUOTES
THIRD RIBBLESDALE SUCCESS FOR STOUTE
Sir Michael Stoute gained his third Ribblesdale Stakes success this afternoon when Spanish Sun defeated Ocean Silk by a head. He previously won the contest with Sally Brown in 1985 and Hellenic five years later.
“The ground was quick enough for her and she changed her legs at the furlong marker - I thought that she was very resolute going on to win,” enthused Sir Michael.
“The plan was to be more handy but she didn’t jump well enough.”
The Newmarket trainer, who was gaining his 44th success at the Royal Meeting, revealed that he had hoped to run Spanish Sun in the Vodafone Oaks at Epsom Downs two weeks ago.
“I had hoped for the Oaks as she has a lot of talent but she’s had a few niggles.”
Stoute runs another of his top fillies, Sagitta 1000 Guineas winner Russian Rhythm, in tomorrow’s Coronation Stakes.
“I’m happy with her preparation and I’m hoping for the best,” he reported.
Spanish Sun’s victory was jockey Richard Hughes’ third success of the Royal Meeting, leaving him as the current top rider at the meeting. It was also owner Khalid Abdulla’s third win here after his Three Valleys and Deportivo had obliged on the opening day.
Teddy Beckett, the owner’s racing manager, said: “It’s been a marvellous week considering how depressed I was at the beginning of the week - for once my pessimism has been misfounded.
“Sir Michael has done a fantastic job with this filly considering this was only her second start.”
The El Prado filly won a Kempton maiden on her sole start last season.
“Stepping up in class like this makes you nervous sometimes,” continued Beckett.
“The Oaks was just too much too soon but it has all worked out fantastically well. She suffered from aggravations rather than anything very major.”
PLACED QUOTES RACE TWO
RIBBLESDALE STAKES
IRELAND NEXT FOR THE OCE N
“You can’t come from behind off a slow pace like that,” said John Gosden after his Ocean Silk had been a fast finishing second to Spanish Sun in the Ribblesdale.
“She could never get a position on the firm ground going down the hill and then she had to come very wide in the straight, while the winner got first run up the inside.
“She finished very well but the post came that bit too soon. In another stride or two she would have won, but that is that.
“She will go for the Irish Oaks next and I am sure that the Curragh will suit her much better than this track with its short straight,” Gosden added.
Ocean Silk was confirming recent form with third home Mezzo Soprano, whom she had beaten recently in the Caffrey’s Lupe Stakes at Goodwood.
After that race her team of John Gosden and Robert Sangster decided to come here rather than go to Epsom for the Vodafone Oaks, but a line through Summitville and Inchberry (third and fourth at Epsom and well beaten in fifth and sixth here) suggests that she could have triumphed in the classic.
Ocean Silk’s rider Jimmy Fortune was later suspended for four days (June 28 through July 1) for overuse of his whip.
WINNING QUOTES RACE THREE
GOLD CUP
COLE’S “VERY EMOTIONAL” MOMENT
“This was really a very emotional moment for me,” said Paul Cole after Mr Dinos had romped home in the Gold Cup, beating old Persian Punch by six lengths.
“It is a race I have always wanted to win, but he is the first runner I have had in the race, and it has been a very tense time for us in the last few weeks.
“We have had a lot of our horses hit by the virus, so that this horse has had to be islolated and even I have hardly been near him, and then even more there was the worry about the ground.
“I had no doubts about him getting the trip, and I felt that some of the others were not bound to stay, but the firm ground was a concern. I think that if it had not been so firm he would have been even more impressive.
“The plan was to take over if and when Persian Punch faltered, and that is what happened. He takes a long time to find his stride, but in the end he really did destroy them.
“I have been feeling under a lot of pressure since he won at Sandown, all the more as I persuaded his owner (Constantides Schiacolas) to come over from Cyprus to watch him, so with the concerns about the virus and the ground it has been a very testing time for us all.”
MORE THIRD RACE WINNING QUOTES
THE GOLD CUP
FALLON DELIGHTED
Kieren Fallon, the winning rider on Mr Dinos, was having his first Gold Cup success. He said: “I wanted to use Mr Dinos’s stamina and felt that we were not going very quick so I went on and it paid off.
“I rode a horse who could take me there and he has travelled well all the way even though he is lazy. When I switched him on turning for home, he found another gear - the sign of a good horse.
“The first two days of Royal Ascot have been very frustrating - I had really good rides and probably should have ridden one or two winners. I have good rides today, tomorrow and Saturday . It is like every big meeting - when you get the first one under your belt you are happy and it makes things a bit easier. It is very competitive racing.
“Mr Dinos has obviously progressed and I was impressed with him. I rode in the race he won at Sandown and my agent was on the phone straightaway to try and get me on this horse in the Gold Cup.
“Mr Cole said he stayed very well and that is the way I rode him today. They went quick enough early on for me to get him switched off and then they steadied it up which is why I made my move.
“When I had gone by Persian Punch, turning for home, he seemed to find another gear - it felt so good.”
MORE PAUL COLE QUOTES
Paul Cole, the winning trainer, added: “This has meant a lot to everybody - we haven’t had a winner at Royal Ascot for a while, we have worked hard and it is jolly nice to get a reward for it.
“The lad who looks after Mr Dinos - Tom - has been marvellous, living with the horse. Mr Dinos has been in isolation and even I kept away from him. Tom has more or less been in charge of him.
“Kieren rode a perfect race - going on when Persian Punch faltered. My main concern was the ground as he does not really like fast ground but he went on it today.”
THIRD RACE PLACED QUOTES
THE GOLD CUP
PUNCH GALLANT SECOND
The ever-popular Persian Punch, running in the Gold Cup for a remarkable seventh successive year, finished six lengths second to Mr Dinos in the 2003 race after taking the lead for most of the 2m 4f contest.
“I’d like to make some excuse but there isn’t one,” said Persian Punch’s trainer David Elsworth. “The other horse taking him on five or six out was what we wanted but unfortunately he went past ours. He’s tested our stamina and was too strong.
“It’s hard for him to concentrate in front so long but he’s probably hit his best form now.
“We came here with the same chance as every year, he’s just 10 now and has never won it. I suppose his chances of doing it in the future aren’t getting any better now.”
The runner-up’s owner Jeff Smith added: “I’m enormously pleased and with a bit of luck his legs will be ice cold in the morning as they have been throughout his career.
“This is his eighth successive Royal Ascot and I’m pretty sure that is his 90th mile racing, never mind the training - it’s quite extraordinary. Unless the press retire him, as they seem to have done about five times, we’ll be back next year.
“The winner taking him on early was ideal because he loves a fight and keeps fighting on.”
The James Fanshawe-trained Pole Star, who finished third, is likely to be given a break.
“I was concerned beforehand about both the ground and the trip,” said Fanshawe. “He’ll have a break now and may wait until the autumn when there is more cut in the ground. His form is very good on fast ground but it’s just a matter of how long he lasts racing on it. We might think about the Lonsdale Stakes at York.”
Fourth-placed Jardines Lookout is being targeted at the Melbourne Cup, for which he is quoted at 33/1 with Cashmans. Australian owner Kevin Bamford, whose colours were carried today, has just purchased a 25 per cent share in the six-year-old.
“He’s a big long-striding horse and when they quicken up it really catches him out but he was staying on at the finish and we’re very pleased,” said trainer Alan Jarvis. “The main aim will be the Melbourne Cup.”
THIRD RACE GROUP 1 GOLD CUP
FURTHER QUOTES
MAMOOL POSSIBLE FOR IRISH ST LEGER
Favourite Mamool finished fifth behind Mr Dinos in this afternoon’s Gold Cup, while Godolphin’s other two contestants Pugin and Fight Your Corner were placed tenth and 11th respectively.
Their trainer Saeed bin Suroor commented: “I think one mile six furlongs to two miles is Mamool’s best distance.
“We need to drop him in distance and the Irish St Leger [at the Curragh] is a possible for him. I still believe that he is a very nice horse.
“The other two were disappointing and didn’t stay. Pugin needs softer ground and Fight Your Corner needs to drop in distance.”
Kevin Darley, rider of Pugin, said: “He needs hock deep ground.”
Jamie Spencer, rider of Fight Your Corner, said: “He ran disappointing.”
A HISTORY OF THE GOLD CUP
Founded in 1807, the Gold Cup is one of the most prestigious races at Royal Ascot. At 2m 4f, the race serves as a thorough test of a horse’s stamina but is not the longest race at the meeting, that accolade goes to the 2m 6f Queen Alexandra Stakes, the last race on the final day.
Master Jackey became the first horse to win the Gold Cup when, carrying only 6st 12lb, he beat three runners and thus collected one hundred guineas in prize money for owner Mr Durand. Royal Rebel, successful in the race last year, won connections £127,600 - with the five-year-old carrying 9st 2lb, 32lb more than the very first winner.
Jannette, who triumphed at 4/5 in 1811, was the first odds-on winner to do so. Numerous horses have gone off at prohibitive odds since, none shorter than Gay Crusader who won at 8/100 in 1917. Because of the First World War, that Gold Cup was run at Newmarket where Gainsborough, successful the following year, also scored. Pretty Polly’s defeat by Bachelor’s Button in 1906 is arguably the race’s greatest upset. The brilliant 1904 Oaks winner seemed to be unsettled by the sweltering conditions and a wart on her belly.
Winners of the Derby rarely run in the Gold Cup nowadays, but for much of its history, the race served as a the primary objective after Epsom classic glory. West Australian, the first winner of the Triple Crown (2,000 Guineas, Derby, St Leger), won at 4/6 in the hands of Alfred Day in 1854. The Flying Dutchman (1850), Gladiateur (1866) and Isinglass (1895) are other famous winners of both races. Ocean Swell, successful in 1945, is the last horse to complete the double.
The Second World War saw the Gold Cup again transferred to Newmarket from 1941-44. Gordon Richards captured a hat-trick of Gold Cups in the war years with Owen Tudor (1942), Ujiji (1943) and Umiddad (1944). The 26-times champion jockey lifted the prize on two other occasions during his long and distinguished career.
Zarathustra in 1957 provided the first of 11 victories for Lester Piggott, and ‘the maestro’ almost made the race his own throughout the 1970s. Sagaro, ridden by Piggott and trained in France by Francois Boutin, saved his best for Ascot, winning three times between 1975 and 1977.
Many horses have distinguished themselves with multiple Gold Cup wins, enhancing the race’s reputation as a specialist’s event. Anticipation, victorious in 1816 and then again in 1819, first achieved the feat. Bizarre, triumphant in 1824 and 1825, was the first to successfully defend the Cup.
In more recent years, Le Moss (1979 & 80), Ardross (1981 & 82) and Kayf Tara (1998 & 2000) stand out as great winners, the first two were trained by Henry Cecil, who retains particular affection for the staying event, while Kayf Tara represented Godolphin.
Prior to Kayf Tara, Drum Taps, who helped put Frankie Dettori at the forefront of British racing, was the last dual winner in 1992 and 1993. Kayf Tara also gained a creditable third in 1999 sandwiched between his two victories.
Celeric’s victory in 1997 was an outstanding performance by the horse and his jockey Pat Eddery. The five-year-old, who was trying two and a half miles for the first time, was produced with a brilliant late run to beat Classic Cliche by three quarters of a length. Sadly, David Morley, trainer of the winner, died in January, 1998, and the gelding went on to be trained by John Dunlop before retiring.
The thrilling 1998 Gold Cup, won by Kayf Tara, had 16 runners - then the biggest field in the history of the race. The previous record was 13 in 1910, 1929, 1950, 1988 and 1997.
But the record was broken again in 1999 when 17 runners went to post and the John Oxx-trained colt Enzeli gave Ireland their first win in the race since Seamus McGrath saddled Levmoss in 1969.
Trainer Mark Johnston, successful in the 1995 Gold Cup with Double Trigger, won the race for a second time in 2001 when Royal Rebel, owned by British Horseracing Board chairman Peter Savill, beat Persian Punch by a head in a tremendous battle. A year later another fine effort from the enigmatic Royal Rebel saw him fend off by a neck Irish challenger Vinnie Roe who started favourite, becoming the latest horse to achieve two Gold Cup successes.

KING GEORGE V HANDICAP
LOVE CONTINUES FANTASTIC MEETING FOR JOHNSTON
Fantastic Love secured a fourth success of the meeting for trainer Mark Johnston whenhe came off best in a ding-dong finish with the second to take the King George V Stakes under Keith Dalgleish in the Pearl Of Love colours of Mick Doyle, who runs a fishing trawling business in the Co Donegal.
“I can only think that they’ve gone really fast because I thought (the trainer’s eventual sixth) Double Obsession had won, once he was in front I thought he’d stay on all day,” said Johnston.
“Fantastic Love flew down the outside - I’ve been telling everyone to stay to the inside so it couldn’t have gone more wrong. The plans were shelved as soon as he came out of the stalls.
“Another horse coming across him cost him the race at Windsor last time - that was a bit of a disaster but he looked very progressive when he won at Hamilton.
“He’s a nice progressive horse by the sire of yesterday’s winner (Pearl Of Love) Peintre Celebre, so he should continue to improve. He’s taller than I am which would be one of my worries in the long term.
“I’m delighted that Keith has got on the scoresheet because he’s been on Russian Valour and Attraction previously. We’re lucky to use several top riders and it keeps them on their toes!”
Dalgleish added: “That’s my second winner here, and that one scored by a short head as well. I thought I had got up by a good head until I saw the photo on the big screen.
“He turned his head when the gates opened so I just had to sit back and bide my time. Pat Eddery came across me at one stage but then I got out and got lucky. I thought I was going to win very easily but he just stopped a bit when he heard the crowd.

SECOND WITH FIRST RUNNER
AT ROYAL ASCOT FOR KING
Alan King, a trainer more usually associated with jumping, sent out Salsalino, his first contestant at the Royal Meeting, to go down by a short-head to Fantastic Love.
“From that draw [3], Pat [Smullen, jockey] gave him a wonderful ride. If someone had said to me beforehand that my fellow would be second, I would have taken it,” said the Barbury Castle-based handler.
“Coming down in the lift I was sure that he had been beaten.”
The trainer did not know where his charge will compete next.
“I haven’t got a clue where he’ll go - I better not say the Triumph Hurdle, had I!” he quipped.
Smullen said: “I always knew that I was beaten. He ran a great race and stayed on again.”
The Jeremy Noseda-trained Lodger also ran well especially as the Grand Lodge colt is still a maiden and was having his first outing in handicap company.
“We had best go and win our maiden next time,” laughed Noseda.
WINNING QUOTES RACE FIVE
HAMPTON COURT STAKES
HARRIS HAS FIRST ROYAL STRIKE
Peter Harris had his first success at the Royal meeting when Persian Majesty just held off Foodbroker Founder to take the Listed Hampton Courtt Stakes. “I have been placed umpteen times, but just haven’t been able to get my nose in front,” he said.
“We had hoped at one time earlier this year that he might have been a Derby horse, but he developed a foot problem and we have not been able to run him until now.
“I am sure that he will improve from this.He is still green with plenty to learn and I am sure this experience will be very good for him.
“I am sure that Johnny (Murtagh) is not aching so much now,” Harris added, and Murtagh, who had to miss his planned rides yesterday after being hurt on the opening day, confirmed that thought.
“You always feel good after riding a winner,” he said. “He is still very green and maybe I got to the front a bit too soon, as he then started pricking his ears and looking about him.
“He was hanging in a bit when I took the lead with my whip in my left hand, but I do not think that I caused any trouble.”
However, all was not quite clear for Murtagh as he received a one day ban (June 28) for careless riding.
FIFTH RACE PLACED QUOTES
HAMPTON COURT STAKES
FOODBROKER EATS UP GROUND TO SECOND
The David Elsworth-trained 50/1 shot Foodbroker Founder finished with a flourish to go down by a neck to Persian Majesty in the Listed Hampton Court Stakes under Dane O’Neill.
“His form was distorted really after his effort in the Lingfield Derby Trial when I fancied him and don’t know what quite happened but the horse finished tailed off,” said Elsworth.
“He’s a good horse and I had him in the Derby but couldn’t really run him there after Lingfield. He’s probably not quite up to that now.”
As handicapper Matthew Tester looked on, Elsworth rued: “I don’t know what we’ll do with him now - we’ll probably be pushed right up the ratings without having won any prize money.” To which, Tester pointed out that the second picked up £11,000.
Evolving Tactics was cut up in the home straight and his jockey Pat Smullen said: “It’s very hard to say whether it cost me the race but it certainly didn’t help. It was all very messy.”
The 2/1 favourite Sublimity finished fourth and Bruce Raymond, assistant racing manager to owner Saeed Suhail, said: “Kieren (Fallon) obviously didn’t get the best of runs but he had to go there (up the rail) and the horses in front chopped him off.”
SIXTH RACE BRITANNIA STAKES
WIN QUOTES
FIRST ROYAL ASCOT SUCCESS FOR COX
Clive Cox gained his first Royal Ascot success when New Seeker was victorious in the Britannia Stakes. The winner was one of a handful who stayed on the far side of the track and raced against the far rail while the rest of the field came stands side.
The trainer revealed afterwards that he had been far from confident.
“On the way here I’d resigned myself to the fact that the draw [27] would probably beat him. The only consolation was that a lot of the good horses were drawn over there but then they went over to the other side. To do what he’s done from that draw I’m thrilled to bits for the horse, myself, the team at home and the owners, the Elite Racing Club,” said the trainer.
“He is a lovely horse and hopefully he is still progressing. He is still a big baby as he showed at Newmarket when he wandered all over the track and still won by five lengths. Then he took on Arakan at York who proved how good he is yesterday [runner-up in the Jersey Stakes].”
Listed and Group races could be on the agenda for the three-year-old now.
“I’d hope that he would be up to running in Listed races. He was quite impressive today and he’s done it the hard way. That will have done his confidence a lot of good,” he enthused.
Wiining rider Jamie Spencer told a group of excited owners: “I looked across the track and I thought ‘Jesus’ where are they - the winning line looked a long way.”
GOING NEWS AT 10 AM
With no rain overnight and no watering, the going for the third day of the Royal meeting remains
GOOD TO FIRM
on all parts of the course.
“The course has taken the first two days racing very well and I hope it will ride very like it did yesterday,” said clerk of the course Nick Cheyne.
“We shall monitor the weather through the day before making a decision about watering.”
BETTING NEWS
Not surprisingly, the two big handicaps are proving very popular with punters and things look so open in the closing Britannia Stakes (5.30) that Ladbrokes have three joint favourites at 9-1. That trio are Mujarad, who has come in from 12-1, Brave Call, who opened at 14-1, and Howle Hill, whose odds have been halved this morning from 18-1.
They have also had good money for Pretence, who has been brought in from 20-1 to 12-1. Howle Hill has also been in demand with Paddy Power (9-1 from 12-1) and Coral (10-1 from 12-1), as has Mujarad, who has come in from 14-1 to 10-1 with Powers, to 11-1 from the same price with Coral and from 14-1 to 10-1 with William Hill. Coral have also had interest in Pretence, who is in by four points to 10-1, Zabaglione, now at 16-1 from 18-1, and Emran, who has been slashed from 18-1 to 12-1. The Tote has had money for Hard Nose, who is now at 12-1 from 16-1.
In the King George V Handicap (4.20) Zero Tolerance has come in from 10-1 to 8-1 with Ladbrokes, to the same price from 11-1 with Powers and to 13-2 from 8-1 with Coral, where he has been the gamble of the day. No-one appears to have missed out as Victor Chandler have brought him in from 11-1 to 8-1 and Hills from 10-1 to 8-1, and the Tote have taken dramatic action in halving his price from 14-1 to 7-1. Coral (14-1 from 20-1), the Tote and Chandler (both 16-1 from 20-1) have also laid Famous Grouse, and Fantastic Love has been in demand with Coral and William Hill (both 12-1 to 9-1), Powers (10-1 to 9-1) and the Tote (8-1 from 11-1). Powers has had interest in Bowing, now at 9-1 from 10-1.
Sun on the Sea is popular in the Ribblesdale Stakes (3.05) and her odds have been cut to 7-1 from the morning 10-1 by Ladbrokes, to the same price from 9-1 by Powers and from 8-1 to 13-2 by Hills.
In the opening Norfolk Stakes (2.30) Powers have shortened Kheleyf from 8-13 to 4-7 and the Tote have him at the same odds from 8-13.
In the Gold Cup (3.45) Powers report interest in Mamool, who has come in from 11-4 to 5-2, while Chandlers have cut Jardine’s Lookout from 20-1 to 16-1 and Kasthari from 16-1 to 14-1.
JOCKEY BETTING
Powers betting on the top jockey of the meeting at the start of this third day sees Frankie Dettori heading that market at 7-4. Kieren Fallon, in spite of having drawn blank on the first two days, is a 5-2 chance with Richard Hughes on 7-2, Darryll Holland a 9-2 shot and 14-1 bar. Dettori is at 2-1(from5-2) with Hills.
