ROYAL ASCOT 2003
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
SECOND DAY, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 18

GREAT CROWD

Today’s attendance came to 57,099

This was a 1.2% increase over the 2002 second-day crowd of 56,443

The 2001 attendance was 53,433.

TOTE TURNOVER BOOMS

The Tote turnover exceeded £2 million at Royal Ascot for the first time today when it amounted to £2,019,064, up by 18.5% on last year’s £1,703,482.

NO WATERING TONIGHT

The course will NOT be watered this evening.

“After the watering last night and the rain we had after racing yesterday, the times were a bit slower today and there is drizzle forecast,” said clerk of the course Nick Cheyne.

“The course has ridden very well today.”

TOP CLASS ENTRY FOR KING GEORGE

There is a superb international list of 61 entries for the £750,000 King George V1 and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes, to be run at Ascot on Saturday, July 26. As well as coming from England and Ireland, there are potential challengers from France, Germany and South Africa, reflecting Ascot’s international appeal. This is very much illustrated by the success of the Australian-trained Choisir in the King’s Stand Stakes yesterday.

Numerically the largest entry for the third leg of the BHB Summer Triple Crown/Grand Slam comes from Aidan O’Brien and the Coolmore operation, who have 18 under consideration for the race. These are headed by last year’s dual Derby and Breeders’ Cup Turf hero High Chaparral, with this year’s Irish 1,000 Guineas winner and unlucky Oaks runner-up Yesterday and the Derby second The Great Gatsby among his back-up team.

Godolphin has 13 possible contenders, including last year’s Prince of Wales’s Stakes winner Grandera, who tries for that prize again today, Sulamani, who won the Prix du Jockey-Club and was second in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe last year before being bought by Sheikh Mohammed and has since won for his new team in the Dubai Sheema Classic, and Mamool, due to run in the Gold Cup here tomorrow.

The Vodafone Derby hero Kris Kin heads a powerful quintet from Sir Michael Stoute’s stable, with Islington (the joint best middle distance filly in Europe last year and in action in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes today), Gamut and the lightly raced but highly regarded Princely Venture.

The French challenge could include Ange Gabriel, who is trained by Eric Libaud, whose wins last year included the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and who was runner-up to Sulamani in Dubai, and Loxias, who is with Carlos Laffon-Paria. From Germany there is Next Desert, who is trained by Andreas Schutz and won his country’s Derby last season, while Victory Moon, who won the UAE Derby and UAE 2,000 Guineas this year, can represent South Africa.

As well as Kris Kin and The Great Gatsby, Derby form is also represented by Alamshar and Norse Dancer, who finished third and fourth, while among the other older horses there are Nayef, just beaten in the King George last year by Golan before going on to take the Juddmonte International, last year’s Derby Italiano winner Rakti, who is now with Michael Jarvis and is another due to run today, and another immigrant from Italy, Falbrav who has shown good form since moving to Luca Cumani this season.

RHYTHM HEADS CORONATION LINE-UP

The Sagitta 1000 Guineas heroine Russian Rhythm will start a warm favourite for Friday’s feature Group 1 Coronation Stakes, for which 11 fillies have been declared to run. But the Kingmambo filly, whose owner Cheveley Park Stud and trainer Sir Michael Stoute won the 1998 race with Exclusive, has to overcome the statistic that no horse since One In A Million in 1979 has gone on to win the Coronation Stakes after landing the Newmarket classic. The Cheveley Park Stud/Stoute combination have a useful second string in Fantasize, winner of the Listed Carey’s Swinley Stakes at Ascot on April 30.

Other rivals include Diacada, trained at her owner’s historic Gestut Rottgen near Cologne by Hans Blume and another boasting a classic vistory having won the German 1,000 Guineas at Dusseldorf on May 11.

Soviet Song, who finished fourth in the Sagitta 1000 Guineas, already has a Group 1 success to her name, having won the Meon Valley Stud Fillies’ Mile at Ascot in September while another to have made her mark at the highest level is Mail The Desert, winner of last season’s Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes.

Cassis, who finished fifth in the French Oaks, had earlier won the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes at York, while the Sagitta 1000 Guineas tenth Duty Paid most recently finished third to Rimrod in Listed company at Epsom.

Geoff Wragg has won this race with Balisada in 1999, Rebecca Sharp in 1997 and Marling in 1992 and the Newmarket handler saddles Proxima, winner of a Nottingham maiden on May 9.

Blaise Castle has not run since winning a three-runner conditions stakes at Newmarket in November, Buy The Sport will need to improve on her Italian 1,000 Guineas sixth and Tattersalls Musidora Stakes fifth to figure in this company while Gonfilia has not run since finishing 12th in the Sagitta 1000 Guineas.

MURTAGH STOOD DOWN

Johnny Murtagh, the leading rider at Royal Ascot for the past two years, will not ride today having been stood down by the racecourse doctor.

The Irishman was hit in the face by his mount Red Power and then thrown from the horse before yesterday’s Coventry Stakes and gave up some of his later rides.

“He has been stood down for one day as he is still stiff and sore from yesterday,” said Dr Norman Gordon, the racecourse medical officer.

“I will see him again tomorrow and will be reviewing the situation on a day-to-day basis.”

Murtagh’s place will be taken by Darryll Holland on Saturn in the Jersey Stakes and Richard Hughes will be on Promenade in the Queen Mary Stakes.

BRITTAIN TAKES OPENER

Newmarket trainer Clive Brittain pointed at the First place pole in the winner’s enclosure and said, “I’m back,” after his Membership had taken this afternoon’s opener by two and a half lengths from Arakan. This was his 15th Royal Ascot success with his previous win coming in 2000.

“I’m not surprised by that,” said Brittain, after his charge had belied his odds of 20/1. “At Newmarket last time [when runner-up to Trade Fair in a Listed contest] the pace was too slow. I thought that he would have a big chance here as I knew they would go like the clappers and he would have every chance of getting a run.”

Brittain was delighted that he had been able to book top American jockey Gary Stevens, who executed his plans to a tee.

“The top American riders have a clock in their brain which helps a lot,” continued the handler. “I booked Gary earlier in the week when I realised that he didn’t have a ride in this race. I thought ‘my God,’ as I’ve been lucky with visiting jockeys.

“I told him to wait, wait and wait again and then you go.”

This was Stevens first success at the Royal Meeting since he won on the Queen’s Blueprint in 1999.

He said: “Clive was very confident. He said hold him up. This is exactly what I did and I used his 75 yard punch. I followed them and then went for it one and a half furlongs out.

“We ran into some traffic which probably helped because he was eager to go on and I wanted to bide my time. I was loaded coming to the furlong marker and it was just a matter of getting a run. We won with something left.

“You can’t beat Royal Ascot - it is by far the most exclusive and enjoyable meeting in the world. To me this is the ultimate in world horseracing.”

“IT’S A BIG JUMP UP”

“He has run really well, done absolutely nothing wrong,” said Alan Cooper, racing manager to the Niarchos family after favourite Arakan had been second to 20-1 Membership in the opening Jersey Stakes.

“He is still a bit of a baby with things to learn, and it is quite a jump up from handicaps in which he has been running to Group company like this. We shall talk about things with (Sir) Michael (Stoute, his trainer), before we decide about where to go next, and I think he will stay at seven furlongs and/or a mile. It would be nice to think that he could win a Group race like this.”

Andrew Balding was very pleased with the show by third home Rimrod. “He has done very well with his penalty from his win at Epsom, but he was not helped by being drawn on the wide outside in 14, so that Martin had to make his effort sooner than he would have wanted. There is a Group 11 race in Ireland next month that we shall look at for him,” he said.

Jeremy Noseda was “delighted” with the fourth place from Wizard of Noz, who was running for the first time in eight months. “I am really pleased with that as he had to miss all the spring races when he was wrong, and to have run like that first time out has really pleased me,” he said.

“I think he may have a bit of a break now, as we had to rush him a bit to get here and he has had a fairly hard race. So I would not want to rush him back too quickly, but I do think that there is a Group race in him and I would like to think that he will be a horse to have as a four-year-old.”

Kieren Fallon described the ground as “the same as it was yesterday”, a comment repeated by Richard Hughes while Pat Eddery said “it’s good fast ground.”

SECOND RACE WINNING QUOTES
QUEEN MARY STAKES

JOHNSTON FILLY IS STAR ATTRACTION

Attraction justified 13/8 favouritism when maintaining her unbeaten record with a hugely-impressive victory in the Queen Mary Stakes carrying the colours of her owner-breeder the Duke of Roxburghe, who is also a steward today.

“She has always been a little bit special and has a great engine at her back-end. She’s not an extravagant mover,” said winning trainer Mark Johnston.

“She’s not a perfect specimen and it is not something I’d mention but after she won at Thirsk the owner mentioned she didn’t go to the sales because she hadn’t got the best of front legs. It’s not something I ever notice - I always say buy a Ferrari and don’t worry about the tyres.

“Kevin (Darley) said she ran very green, which is amazing when you think it was her fourth start. The plan had been to get a lead.

“It’s one race at a time with her, the Duke of Roxburghe’s brief was just to win a race with her. I don’t know where to go next - I honestly haven’t a clue.”

Johnston revealed that it had been touch and go whether the filly made it to Ascot. “On Saturday morning, she was on a track on the gallops where it was very dusty and she just leapt and ended up down on her knees, cutting herself.

“We had a couple of days with a lot of worry and hosing her with cold water. If there had been any swelling then she would have been out.”

Kevin Darley added: “I think Mark (Johnston) could have ridden her, she won so well. This is a big robust filly who could go all the way

“She takes a stride or two to get going but shows a lot of natural speed early on. What I liked is when you give her a slap and ask her to dig deep she does just that.”

Attraction is as short as 20/1 with Cashmans for next year’s Sagitta 2000 Guineas.

SECOND RACE GROUP THREE QUEEN MARY STAKES
PLACED QUOTES

LODER SECOND AGAIN

David Loder saddled his second two-year-old runner-up of the Royal Meeting when his Catstar found just Attraction three lengths too powerful. Yesterday Botanical finished second in the Coventry Stakes.

The Newmarket trainer said: “She’s run a very good race and the winner is obviously very good. I’m delighted for the winner’s owner, the Duke of Roxburghe, although I would have preferred a dead-heat!”
There are no plans for the runner-up at present.

“She will have a little rest now and she’ll get six furlongs,” added Loder.

Mick Channon, trainer of third-placed Majestic Desert, is in agreement with his training counterpart about the quality of the winner, although he believes his filly may well be better over six furlongs.

He said: “That was a good run and I’m thrilled. She’s a proper little filly with a great attitude. The first two are very fast and look real good - someone must have let them out of the Silver Ring!
“Over six furlongs it might be a different story - they rather got her on her head over five furlongs.

“There are a lot of options for her now.

“The two-year-old races here are looking a bit special this year.”
Majestic Desert’s jockey Darryll Holland agreed that a step up to six furlongs might suit.

“Maybe another furlong would suit her - she got outpaced over the road and she’s a tough filly,” he commented.

WINNING QUOTES RACE THREE
PRINCE OF WALES’S STAKES

TRIPLE CROWN/GRAND SLAM UNDER CONSIDERATION

“We shall certainly look at the new Triple Crown for him after this,” said Marcus Tregoning after Nayef had outrun the 50-1 chance Rakti in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes. “After all, if the people have put up the money for the series it is wrong not to give it proper consideration.

“It is wonderful to have won a race like this at Royal Ascot and against such good opposition. Nayef is a really good and consistent horse and he has won this really well.

“The Eclipse will certainly be very high in our thoughts when I discuss things with Sheikh Hamdan, and the King George is also a possibility as he has run so very well here on so many occasions.

“I thought Richard (Hills) rode a wonderful race on Nayef, but must also be very grateful to Willie Supple, for the job he did on Ekraar when they were taking on Moon Ballad for the lead. Ekraar was there to do a job for us and he did it well, but he used up all his speed in doing so, which is why he did not last very long in the straight.

“I was quite confident that Nayef would turn round the Dubai form with Moon Ballad, especially on this different surface.

“Last year we made the mistake of running Nayef back too soon after he had come back from Dubai, but we did not do that this time. He stayed out there for about a month after his final run, but though he was going really well before Epsom we decided not to run him in the Coronation Cup. He was flying even more before he ran here!”

Paddy Power have Nayef as their second favourite at 9-2 (from 8-1)_ for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes next month. Sulamani is their 2-1 favourite with High Chaparral on 5-1.

THIRD RACE PLACED QUOTES
PRINCE OF WALES’S STAKES

50/1 RAKTI RUNS BLINDER IN SECOND

Last year’s Italian Derby winner Rakti ran a blinder in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes to his bely his odds of 50/1 to the delight of trainer Michael Jarvis.

The Newmarket handler took charge of Gary Tanaka’s four-year-old this year and has done a lot of work on him with the help of Steve ‘Yarmy’ Dyble, who has helped to coach the horse at the start.

“He’s a very fast horse,” said Jarvis. “And we’ve done a lot of work with him at home. Yarmy gets him in the stall, puts the rope on him and the horse really respects that.”

Islington ran a good race to finish third on her seasonal reappearance, a performance described by trainer Sir Michael Stoute as “very satisfactory.”

Peter Reynolds, stud manager for owners the Weinstock family, added: “She needed the race so badly and just had a lack of match practice. This will have brought her on a ton and she ran a super race.

“I don’t know about plans - I leave that to the trainer.”

FURTHER QUOTES

GODOLPHIN PAIR DO NOT FIRE
IN FEATURE CONTEST

The two Godolphin horses in today’s feature contest did not appear to fire with last year’s winner Grandera finishing seventh and favourite Moon Ballad coming ninth.

Their trainer Saeed bin Suroor said: “That was a disappointing result - they both looked fine after the race and we will see how they come back.

“I still believe both are class horses and that there are races to be won with them in the future. There are no plans at the moment.”

Asked if Moon Ballad may have been effected by Ekraar bustling him up at the front, he replied: “It is difficult to say. He didn’t look as happy this time and I expect much better than this later.”

Moon Ballad’s jockey Frankie Dettori said: “He was just too fresh and needed the race. From three furlongs out he wasn’t too happy and I knew I was in trouble. He’s got a race under his belt and should be fine.”

Grandera’s rider Jamie Spencer commented: “He just didn’t fire.”

FOURTH RACE ROYAL HUNT CUP
WIN QUOTES

FANSHAWE’S FIRST ROYAL MEETING VICTORY

“This is the most special meeting and I hope that this is the first of many,” were the words uttered by winning trainer James Fanshawe after he had gained his first Royal Ascot success courtesy of Macadamia in the Royal Hunt Cup.

The win was especially poignant as it came for Macadamia’s owner/breeder Sam Vestey. “I’m absolutely thrilled as Lord Vestey is one of my original owners.” He also owned Fanshawe’s first Group winner Radwell, who was successful in the Solario Stakes at Sandown.

He continued: “Macadamia is improving fast and she’s by Classic Cliche who won the Gold Cup [in 1996] but she doesn’t really get more than a mile. She’s got to be good enough for Group races now and she has improved with age like her father.

“I’ve had quite a few placed here before now - Invermark was a little unlucky when second in the Gold Cup and Ecclesiastical was runner-up in the Britannia.”

Macadamia was ridden by Dane O’Neill, who came in for a spare ride after Johnny Murtagh was declared unfit this morning by the doctor.

“It was bad luck on Johnny but good luck for Dane, who did a great job,” enthused Fanshawe.

Dane O’Neill said: “Johnny had a bad fall yesterday and it was not a nice way to get a spare ride. I’ve ridden a few for the stable before.”

Looking further ahead to Friday’s Coronation Stakes, Fanshawe reported: “Soviet Song would like a bit more rain and I hope that she is regaining her sparkle. She worked well on Tuesday.”

PLACED QUOTES RACE FOUR
ROYAL HUNT CUP

PLACED PAIR MAY MEET AT GOODWOOD

“He has run his heart out and has turned round the form from York with Funfair, the horse who beat him there,” said Clive Brittain after Camp Commander had beaten all but Macadamia in the Royal Hunt Cup.

“We held him up as long as possible to get the trip as this is a stiff mile for him and he has run on really well, but there is always one horse that bit better handicapped than you are.

“We may well run him in the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket and the William Hill Mile at Goodwood is a good sort of race for him. The easy mile like that will suit him well.

Tim Easterby, trainer of third home Tough Love, said that the big Goodwood handicap is “a distinct possibility” for his four-year-old, who ran a big race under his 7lb penalty. “This is a stiff mile for him,” he said.

WINNING QUOTES RACE FIVE
ASCOT STAKES

Martin Pipe sent out the winner of the Ascot Stakes for the fifth time -- the only other race he has won at the Royal meeting in the Windsor Castle -- when bottom weight Sindarpour took full advantage of the 25lb he was getting from top weight Landing Light.

And to give the race a real jumping flavour, Landing Light is trained by Nicky Henderson who, like Pipe, is better known for his exploits over the obstacles.

Sindarpour was lucky to have been in the race at all for two reasons. If he had not won at Sandown on Saturday he would not have collected the penalty which enabled him to make the cut, and more seriously, about tyree months ago he sustained a crack in his pelvis which could have had very serious consequences.

“He just pulled up lame after he had galloped and when we x-rayed him there was a wide crack in his pelvis,” the trainer related, “but my vet has done a marvellous job and here we are.

“I wasn’t worried about the loose horse during the race, he was probably doing us a favour by annoying the leaders, and though I was a bit worried when Martin (Dwyer) kicked on as early as he did and I thought he had done so a bit early, he is a good jockey and new exactly what he was doing.”

Sindarpour went to the front on the home turn and stayed on strongly to win by three lengths from Landing Light.

JUMPING MEN TAKE THE SPOILS

Martin Pipe sent out the winner of the Ascot Stakes for the fifth time -- the only other race he has won at the Royal meeting is the Windsor Castle -- when bottom weight Sindarpour took full advantage of the 25lb he was getting from top-weight Landing Light.

And to give the race a real jumping flavour, Landing Light is trained by Nicky Henderson who, like Pipe, is better known for his exploits over the obstacles.

Sindarpour was lucky to have been in the race at all for two reasons. If he had not won at Sandown on Saturday he would not have collected the penalty which enabled him to make the field, and more seriously, about tyree months ago he sustained a crack in his pelvis which could have had very serious consequences.

“He just pulled up lame after he had galloped and when we x-rayed him there was a wide crack in his pelvis,” the trainer related, “but my vet has done a marvellous job and here we are.

ASCOT STAKES

LIGHT JUST FAILS TO LAND SPOILS

Trainer Nicky Henderson, a more familiar sight in the winner’s enclosures of Cheltenham and Aintree, looks set to be visiting some more big Flat meetings this summer after top hurdler Landing Light finished second under top weight in the Ascot Stakes under Kieren Fallon.

“Carrying the weight is one thing, giving it away is another thing,” rued Henderson.

“Kieren says we must keep going on the Flat, I’m not sure what or where - I know where the Ascot Stakes is run but I’m not so good on some of the other races! The Flat programme book doesn’t get used very much, I’ll have to dust it down.

“He’s in the Northumberland Plate, but thats over one mile six furlongs which would be a bit tight and it’s week on Saturday so I would think Goodwood would be more likely.”

PEARL SHINES TO GIVE JOHNSTON JUVENILE DOUBLE

Pearl Of Love completed a 4.5/1 juvenile double for Mark Johnston, who had earlier won the Queen Mary Stakes with Attraction, when landing the concluding Chesham Stakes by a length and a half from the fast-finishing Tyccon.

“It’s not been a bad day,” said Johnston. “From the start this was our one for the meeting and as with the filly, nothing but winning would do. It would have been a desperate disappointment if this one had not won. It’s been terrible in the run-up, I don’t remember ever being like this before.

“This is a really progressive horse, sometimes you just get a gut feeling about them.

“He’s got it all - the looks, temperament, speed and pedigree and I think Peintre Celebre is going to do well as a sire. He’s got huge scope and we were shocked he was so good so early because he looked like a horse for the back-end and still does really.

“We’ll be taking a long-term view with him and give him a couple more runs. He’s in the National Stakes in Ireland, it’s quite rare I enter them in that because of the cost and the early entry date.”

Cashmans quote Pearl Of Love at 20/1 for the 2004 Vodafone Derby while Ladbrokes rate both Pearl Of Love and Tycoon 33/1 chances for next year’s Sagitta 2000 Guineas.

TYCOON FINDS ONE TOO GOOD

The Aidan O’Brien-trained Tycoon had the misfortune of coming up against Pearl Of Love in today’s concluding contest, going down by one and a half lengths to that rival.

“Our horse ran a good race,” said the Irish trainer. “We’ll take our time with him and I’m not sure where he will run next.”

Recent Windsor winner Milk It Mick, trained by Jamie Osborne, was a further one and a half lengths adrift in third.

“He ran well and I’m pleased. He stepped up on the Windsor performance and there are no excuses. Martin [Dwyer, jockey] gave him a nice ride and he found two too good for him,” explained the trainer.

“He’s still a bit weak and he will win a good race this year - we’ve got all sorts of options and he’s got the speed for six furlongs and will probably get a mile later in the year.”

Milk It Mick’s owner Paul Dixon, whose wife Yvette bred the Millkom colt, commented: “He’s a nice horse who will probably be better with a bit of time.

“The two in front are nice horses - the winner was well touted while Tycoon was supposed to be their banker of the week. The Solario Stakes is a possibility but we’ll see how he goes.”

SUPPLE AND PEDROZA SUSPENDED

Willie Supple and Eduardo Pedroza were both suspended for one day (May 27) after incidents in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes.

Supple was found guilty of careless riding when Ekraar interfered with Falbrav about a furlong after the start, and Pedroza of the same offence when Paolini hampered Olden Times on the home turn.

GOING NEWS AT 10 AM

The going for the second day of the Royal meeting remains

GOOD TO FIRM

on all parts of the course.

“We had a heavy shower after racing yesterday, which produced about two millimetres of rain, and we put another four millimetres on various parts of the track,” said clerk of the course Nick Cheyne.

“The forecast is for a mainly dry day and we shall monitor the situation during racing before making any decision about further watering.”

BETTING NEWS

Punters seem to be looking to Desert Destiny to get them off to a bright start in the opening Jersey Stakes (2.30) as they lick their wounds of yesterday, when exchanges were very much in favour of the layers. Sheikh Mohammed’s colt has been backed from 7-1 to 6-1 with William Hill, trimmed by half a point to 13-2 by Victor Chandler, cut by a point to 7-1 by Ladbrokes and reduced by two points from 8-1 by the Tote. But the most dramatic move has been that with Paddy Power, who quoted 10-1 this morning and are now down to 6-1.

Chandlers have also seen money for Islington (6-1 from 7-1) in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes (3.45), in which Hills report sustained interest at 9-2 over Nayef. Ladbrokes report a bet of £10,000 at 11-2 over Grandera, who is at 5-1 from 11-2 with Powers. The latter have cut Falbrav by half a point to 4-1.

There has, inevitably, been a wide range of interest in the Royal Hunt Cup (4.20) with Camp Commander in demand all over the place. He has been cut from 22-1 to 16-1 by SkyBet, from 20-1 to 14-1 by Powers, frrom 18-1 to 12-1 by Coral and from 16-1 to 12-1 by Chandlers and Hills. SkyBet have also done good business over Selective (16-1 to 12-1), Macadamia (11-1 from 12-1) and Shot To Fame (33-1 from 40-1), while Hills and Powers report interest in Pentecost, who is at 20-1 from 28-1 with both firms. Powers have also cut Tough Love from 28-1 to 22-1 and Coral have trimmed Selective from 14-1 to 10-1.

Thewhirlingdervish has danced his way into the public fancy for the Ascot Stakes (4.55). He is in from 16-1 to 12-1 with Ladbrokes, SkyBet and Chandlers, from 20-1 to 14-1 by Coral and from 22-1 to 14-1 with Powers and Hills. Mana d’Argent is popular with Hills at 12-1, has been cut from that price to 9-1 by the Tote and from 16-1 to 10-1 with Powers, while Chandlers and Coral have cut Fortune Island from 16-1 to 12-1 and Coral have reduced Sindarpour from the same price to 14-1.

MORE BETTING NEWS

There has been yet more money for Desert Destiny in the opening Jersey Stakes (2.30), this time with Cashmans, who have brought him in from 8-1 to 7-1.

Their punters also anticipate a Mark Johnston double in the two two-year-old races, with Attraction having been trimmed from 15-8 to 6-4 for the Queen Mary Stakes (3.05) and Pearl of Love coming in from 6-4 to 5-4 for the Chesham (5.30)

Cashmans, who are paying 1/4 the odds each way on all races at the meeting (as long as there are enough runners !), offer money back if your selection is second to Funfair in the Royal Hunt Cup (4.20) and are paying over the first five places in that race and in the Ascot Stakes.

INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGERS ON SECOND DAY

Again some intriguing contestants from overseas line-up at Royal Ascot today, following on from Australia’s historic first success in Britain courtesy of the Paul Perry-trained Choisir in yesterday’s King’s Stand Stakes.

Apart from the usual strong challenge from Ireland at the Royal Meeting, America America will bid to become the first American-trained winner at Royal Ascot in the Group Three Queen Mary Stakes at 3.05pm.

The two-year-old daughter of Mister Baileys has already shown blistering speed in her homeland, winning a three-furlong event at Gulfstream Park on April 6, when proving a neck too powerful for Another Freddy.

Yesterday America America’s trainer Franck Mourier saddled his first runner here when Parisienne was eleventh in the Group Three Coventry Stakes.

An American-trained horse has gone close to winning at the Royal Meeting previously. In 1936 Omaha fought a tremendous duel with Quashed in that year’s renewal of the Gold Cup, which was to become famous as one of the most feted races of the twentieth century.

Omaha, the winner of the US Triple Crown in 1935 taking the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes, and his rival crossed the line together in what many onlookers considered to be a dead heat, only for the judge to award the race to Quashed by a short head and in doing so quashing an audacious American challenge.

German trainer Andreas Wohler runs Paolini in today’s feature event, the Group One Prince Of Wales’s Stakes, at 3.45pm.

The Lando horse is running for the honour of being the first German-trained winner at Royal Ascot. Paolini was eighth behind Grandera, who reopposes today, in last year’s renewal of this great ten-furlong contest.

GREAT 59 FOR THE
CORAL-ECLIPSE STAKES

Today’s Group One Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot has special significance for this year’s Group One Coral-Eclipse at Sandown Park on July 5.

The Prince Of Wales’s Stakes is the last of the four races forming the first leg of the British Horseracing Board’s Summer Triple Crown/Grand Slam with its £1 million and £5 million bonuses while the Coral-Eclipse is the second leg.

Today, Wednesday, June 18, sees 59 horses still in the 10-furlong Coral-Eclipse, which is worth a record £350,000, after the forfeit stage.

The number going forward is 15 more than at this stage last year for the Coral-Eclipse.

Nine of the 10 runners in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes also hold entries for the Coral-Eclipse, These include this season’s Dubai World Cup winner Moon Ballad and the 2002 World Series Champion Grandera, both from Godolphin, as well as Nayef, last season’s Juddmonte International hero, and Sir Michael Stoute’s star filly Islington.

Completing the Ascot runners also engaged in the Coral-Eclipse are recent Group One Premio Presidente della Repubblica scorer Rakti, Ekraar, Kaieteur, Olden Times and Falbrav, from the Luca Cumani stable, who was triumphant in the Group One Prix d’Ispahan at Longchamp last time out.

The Coral-Eclipse gives the classic generation the first chance to tackle the older horses in Group One company and Vodafone Derby second The Great Gatsby is one of Irish champion trainer Aidan O’Brien’s 15 entries still engaged. Alamshar, the Vodafone Derby third, is another potential raider from Ireland, being trained by John Oxx.

Godolphin, which has a good record in the Coral-Eclipse, has a very strong hand. Besides Moon Ballad and Grandera, Godolphin has Dubai Destination, yesterday’s decisive Queen Anne Stakes winner, Sulamani, the impressive victor of the Dubai Sheema Classic, and York scorer Lateen Sails among its 10 entries.

Norse Dancer, fourth in the Vodafone Derby and third in the Sagitta 1000 Guineas, is one of the horses who could be supplemented for the Coral-Eclipse at a cost of £20,000 on June 30.

Andrew Cooper, Sandown’s Clerk of the Course, said today: “We have tremendous quality entries remaining in the Coral-Eclipse, which this year is the second leg of the Summer Triple Crown/Grand Slam, as well as the prospect of high-profile supplementary entries.”

55 GO FORWARD FOR THE DARLEY JULY CUP

The Group One Darley July Cup, the feature race of Newmarket’s three-day July Meeting, has 55 entries going forward after the forfeit stage yesterday, details of which are released today, Wednesday, June 18.

All the main contenders go forward for the great six-furlong contest which is worth £250,000 this year and run on the third day, Thursday, July 10.

Choisir, the Australian-trained winner of Royal Ascot’s Group Two King’s Stand Stakes over five furlongs yesterday, remains engaged in the Darley July Cup and his trainer Paul Perry will consider whether to come to Newmarket after running in Saturday’s six-furlong Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes again at Ascot.

The King’s Stand second Acclamation, third Oasis Dream, sixth Elusive City, seventh Captain Rio, eighth Bahamian Pirate, 10th Romantic Liason, 12th Saddad, 13th Peace Offering, 14th Indian Spark and 15th Continent also remain in the Darley July Cup.

The Golden Jubilee Stakes looks sure to provide plenty of pointers for the Darley July Cup and one entry in Saturday’s race who could go on to run at Newmarket is the flying filly Airwave, successful in the Group One betfair Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket last season, who made a stunning seasonal reappearance in the Group Two Temple Stakes at Sandown last month.

The 2002 Golden Jubilee Stakes hero Malhub, international challenger Belle Du Jour, American raider Morluc from the Randy Morse stable, leading French sprinter Zipping, Danehurst from Newmarket-based Sir Mark Prescott and Godolphin’s Three Points could run on Saturday and then appear at Newmarket.

Hawk Wing, who finished seventh in the Group One Queen Anne Stakes over a mile at Royal Ascot yesterday and previously ran away with Newbury’s Juddmonte Lockinge, is also still engaged in the Darley July Cup.

Michael Prosser, Newmarket’s Clerk of the Course, commented today: “The 2003 Darley July Cup is shaping up into a fantastic race and looks like it will once again decide who is Europe’s top sprinter.”
