WINNING QUOTES RACE ONE
COVENTRY STAKES

THREE VALLEYS ANNIHILATES HIS RIVALS

Three Valleys left his rivals for dead through the final furlong of the Coventry Stakes as he romped home by eight lengths from Botanical, with Privy Seal a neck back in third in a time only just outside the juvenile track record.

So impressive was his performance that bookmakers immediately made him favourite for next year’s Sagitta 2,000 Guineas with 16-1 being the best price available, but his trainer Roger Charlton will not give us too many chances to see him again this season.

“I don’t know where he will run next, I just want to sit back and enjoy this,” he said, “but I don’t think that we would want to run him too many times this year. Although there is a lot of stamina on his dam’s side, I would not see him getting more than a mile. If he does, then he does, but I don’t think that he will. Horses with as much speed as he clearly has do not usually stay.

“Richard (Hughes) said that he was always travelling very easily and, once he quickened up and went ahead, he just came right away. All he had won before this was a small race at Nottingham in soft ground, and you could not really see him winning a Group Three like this in such style after that win.

“Though in fairness Richard said after he had won at Nottingham that when he took his hand off the reins to pull his goggles down, the horse took off with him and he got to the front too soon.

“But this really was very, very impressive. During the race I was standing next to my son Harry and I kept saying to him ‘if he doesn’t fall in a hole he’s going to win this’... and he did”.

Charlton went on to talk about some of his runners later in the week, saying that he expects big efforts from Move It and Deportivo in the last today, and Patavellian later on -- “I think he has a big chance,” he said.

But perhaps the last word should lay with John Gosden, who trained the third home, Privy Seal, and also has horses for Three Valleys’ owner-breeder Prince Khalid Abdullah. “I don’t mind behind placed behind you, but I do object to being pissed on,” he said as he congratulated the winning trainer.

RACE ONE GROUP THREE COVENTRY STAKES
PLACED QUOTES

STEP UP IN TRIP AWAITS BOTANICAL

David Loder was pleased with second-placed Botanical’s performance in the opening Coventry Stakes despite the fact that he found winner Three Valleys eight lengths too strong.

“Our horse has run a good race,” said Loder. “Frankie [Dettori, jockey] said he was a bit tense before the race and didn’t breathe properly during the race when again he seemed tense.”

Although no actual target was forthcoming at this stage, a step up from the six furlongs will occur on his next start.

“We’ll see how he comes out of this race as to where he goes next, but he’ll step up to seven furlongs for his next start. He’s been giving the impression that this trip will suit.”

When asked about his runner in tomorrow’s Queen Mary Stakes, Catstar, Loder responded: “She’s well and she’s been working well. I haven’t had a chance to study the declarations yet but I don’t have any worries about fast ground.”

As Loder left the press corps to their own devices, someone commented to Loder, “As long as you’ve got a two-year-old eight lengths better than Botanical, you’ll be alright.” The trainer responded: “Well I have.” Could this be Kheleyf, an intended runner in Thursday’s Norfolk Stakes?

John Gosden, who saddled Privy Seal, a further neck adrift in third, said: “For the winner to win the Coventry Stakes by eight lengths, he must be exceptional by definition. It would be churlish to say anything else!

“Mine is a nice horse who will be better over seven furlongs but he’s run a great race.”

THE COVENTRY STAKES

RED POWER WITHDRAWN AFTER UNSEATING MURTAGH

Johnny Murtagh, the leading rider at Royal Ascot for the past two years, had an unwelcome start to this year’s meeting when hit in the face by his mount Red Power and then thrown as the horse reared over backwards before the opening Coventry Stakes.

Red Power’s trainer Paul Blockley reported: “It was just one of those things, the horse seems fine and Johnny is fine. The horse appeared to lose his back legs. It’s annoying to have come all this way especially as we were 8lb better off with the third.”

The stewards inquired into the running of the 3/1 favourite Sabbeeh, who finished seventh, and jockey Philip Robinson reported that the horse appeared to be unsuited by the fast ground.

GROUND IS GOOD TO FIRM

Jockeys riding in the first race agreed that the ground matched the official going description of good to firm.

Adrian Nicholls said: “It was good, fast ground with no jar in it,” Frankie Dettori said “it’s good to firm,” Philip Robinson described it as “good fast ground” and Jimmy Fortune said it rode as “good to firm.”

SECOND RACE WINNING QUOTES
THE KING’S STAND STAKES

CHOISIR LANDS HISTORIC VICTORY

Choisir, based at Paul Perry’s Newcastle stable north of Sydney, became the first Australian-trained winner in Britain when running away with the Group 2 King’s Stand Stakes at odds of 25/1.

“It’s a great thrill to be here and this must be one of the best days of my life,” said Perry, who has based the horse for the past three weeks at Geoff Wragg’s Newmarket yard. “I’ll look back in years to come and I’m sure this will be a sensational memory.

“When the Singapore sprint was called off (in May) we decided to come here, we wouldn’t have done so otherwise so it was a blessing in disguise. We’ve been looked after so well here.

“They’ll love this at home and this will square it up,” he added, referring to two recent successes in the Melbourne Cup by European horses. “It’s just after midnight but I’ve been fielding calls non stop from owners and friends. I’m sure they couldn’t believe the odds.

“When you took a line with Favelon in Hong Kong I thought he had a real chance. He’s such a good doer and worked super on Friday so we really thought we had a big chance.”

Choisir is quoted at 6/1 with Coral for Saturday’s Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes and Perry added: “He gets in at weight-for-age without a penalty so should be suited by it. Airwave must be a super filly but I’m sure today’s win must pick him up.

“I think today’s race will have done him good because he was getting a bit full of himself in the paddock and it was his first start for a while. We’ll see how he performs on Saturday and pulls up before deciding whether he stays over for a bit longer.

“We’ve been to Dubai, Hong Kong and New Zealand so have travelled a good bit but this is a first. The world’s such a small place now and I’m sure we’ll be back.”

PLACED QUOTES RACE TWO
KING’S STAND STAKES

ACCLAMATION MAY BE OUT ON SATURDAY

Acclamation, who finished well to beat all but all the way winner Choisir in the King’s Stand, may be out again in the Golden Jubilee Stakes (formerly the Cork and Orrery) on Saturday. “We have left him in and will see how he comes out of this race, but he could run again if it is not too soft,” said Peggy Cottrell, wife of the runner-up’s trainer.

“We had our golden wedding last week, and I reckon that Pat (Eddery, who rode Acclamation) must have been one when we were married.

“Pat said that the horse next to him at the start sat down in the stalls and Acclamation must have lost six lengths. I didn’t see that, but he certainly finished very well and, after the problems last season, it looks as if things are going better for him.

“Last year he started coughing in about May and it just went on and on and on.Then after he was third in the Diadem, he had an attack of ringworm, so it really wasn’t his year.”

John Gosden was very pleased with the display by the third Oasis Dream. “Looking at that he is clearly a sprinter and it may be just as well that we had to miss the Guineas with him,” he said. “He is not a miler and the July Cup will be the next stop.”

Last year’s winner Dominica could not quite repeat her success but was a creditable fourth. “I was very pleased with that,” said her trainer Marcus Tregoning. “At one stage I feared that she was gong to drop right out, but she kept plugging on. I think we shall try her at six furlongs this year, but she isn’t in the July Cup so I doubt if it will be there.”

Horses can be supplemented for the big Newmarket sprint which is run on July 10.

RACE THREE GROUP ONE ST JAMES’S PALACE STAKES
WIN QUOTES

ZAFEEN JUSTIFIES CONFIDENCE

Mick Channon has always maintained that Zafeen is a top-class horse and today he proved that confidence justified by winning the St James’s Palace Stakes by a length from favourite Kalaman.

The West Ilsley-based trainer said: “He’s always been a good colt and very consistent until Ireland [when 14th of 16 in the Irish Guineas last month] but that’s what happens.

“That was the only time that he has left us scratching our heads. It was dead ground there and Stephen Drowne [jockey in Ireland] was on the far rail. He had to use the horse a bit early and the rest of the field left him in the middle of the track.

“This game breeds doubters and Zafeen ran very well in the English Guineas and was very unlucky. With a bit of luck in running he would have won.”

Today Zafeen was ridden by Darryll Holland but Channon was keen to stress that Drowne was not to blame for the Irish defeat.

“It was no fault of Stephen Drowne’s,” continued the handler. “I feel very sorry for Stephen and he did nothing wrong in Ireland. I can console him by putting him on my horses as often as I can.”

Channon revealed that everything had gone to plan today for the Zafonic colt.

“We decided that we should sit in where comfortable and kick with two furlongs to go - catch us if you can,” he said. “That’s exactly what happened and when he kicked I knew that it would take a bloody good horse to beat him. I’ve always thought that he was a Group One horse.”

Zafeen could be on track for an encounter with the older milers now.

“It’s great to win a Group One and he beat Guineas winners and put a few scalps to rest. We’ll see that he’s come out of this race alright and I’ll have a chat with the owners, but I would think that he’ll go for the Sussex Stakes [at Goodwood] and all the mile races and take on the older horses. There might also be a few options in France,” he revealed.

Channon was extremely emotional indicating just what a victory at the Royal Meeting means to him.

“I love winning anywhere but this is a bit special. This means a lot to Mick Channon and all of the people at West Ilsley,” he added.

THIRD RACE PLACED QUOTES
THE ST JAMES’S PALACE STAKES

KALAMAN UNLUCKY SECOND

The 5/2 favourite Kalaman enjoyed a far from trouble-free run when finishing with a wet sail to claim second place behind Zafeen in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes.

“It was unfortunate but the race is over,” said Kalaman’s trainer Sir Michael Stoute.

The colt’s owner, the Aga Khan, added: “Johnny (Murtagh) said a number of them came across and then he went for a good opening but they stopped in front of him.

“On what we saw today he looks a very nice horse and he deserves to work his way through the programme in Europe. I think he’ll get more than a mile so we have plenty of choices.”

German 2,000 Guineas winner Martillo also had a troubled passage in third but his trainer Ralf Suerland was less disheartened.

“I’m very happy to have finished third in a Group 1 at Royal Ascot,” said the Cologne-based handler. “The jockey said it was not a good race for him and maybe he could have been second but I am happy with third.

“His next start will be in a Group 2 at Hoppegarten in Berlin for three-year-olds and upwards and then the Jacques Le Marois at Deauville.”

OTHER QUOTES RACE THREE
ST JAMES’S PALACE STAKES

EGAN BLAMES THE GROUND

John Egan was certain that the fast ground was the cause of the disappointing run by Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Indian Haven, who trailed in last of the 11 runners.

“I am sure it was too firm for him,” he said. “He doesn’t need it soft, but he does like a bit of juice.

“He was going very well turning for home, but once I asked him to let down on the ground he did not enjoy it. I did not want to knock him about and give him a hard race once he was beaten -- he is a good horse -- so I let him come home in his own time. He was fine after the race.”

WINNING QUOTES RACE FOUR
QUEEN ANNE STAKES

THE THREE Ps PAY OFF

“When Sheikh Mohammed began the Godolphin operation he had the maxim of the three ps -- preparation, planning and patience -- and they have certainly paid off with this horse,” said Simon Crisford after Dubai Destination had stormed home in the Queen Anne.

“This was a top class race and they went a proper gallop. He quickened up really well and won like the good horse we have always known he was.

“We came here confident that he would run a big race. We weren’t afraid of Hawk Wing, though obviously we respected him as a horse on top form after his win in the Lockinge, but we knew Dubai Destination had improved since his win at Nottingham.”

Sheikh Mohammed agreed how frustrating it had been that the winner had had to spend so much of last year on the sidelines after having beaten Rock of Gibraltar as a two-year-old, in view of the way in which Rock of Gibraltar carried all before him last year.

“We have had all sorts of problems with him and it has been very much a question of giving him plenty of time. Luckily we were able to give him a long time in the winter in Dubai and now he has got over all his problems. We never thought about retiring him.”

Plans for the winner look likely to take in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood in August, and Crisford indicated that the long term aim for the year would be the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita in October.

RACE FOUR GROUP ONE QUEEN ANNE STAKES
PLACED QUOTES

TILLERMAN SECOND

“That was a tremendous performance - it’s a shame that we can’t come here more often,” were the words uttered by trainer
Amanda Perrett after Tillerman had found just Dubai Destination four lengths too good in this afternoon’s Queen Anne Stakes.

Tillerman finished third to Where Or When, with whom he reversed the form today, in last September’s Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot.

“Tillerman got a great run through the race and there are no excuses,” continued Perrett. “I wish that I had another 10 horses like him. I don’t know where he will run next - I’ll have to talk to Prince Khalid [Abdulla, owner] and Teddy Beckett [owner’s racing manager] and I’m indebted to them for keeping him in training.

“I would love to have a Royal Ascot winner for this owner - I keep having all of these seconds!”

John Warren, the racing manager to the Queen, whose Right Approach finished a further three-quarters of a length back in third, thought that the four-year-old could have finished second.

“I’m delighted as he’s run a really nice race there and proved that he is up to Group One class - we had been hoping that he would be,” he said.

“I’m not sure where we will go now and we’ll have to have discussions with Sir Michael [Stoute, trainer]. He’s back now and that was his first time in a race of that calibre.

“He followed Hawk Wing [the beaten favourite] and with luck, he probably should have finished second.”

FOURTH RACE QUOTES
THE QUEEN ANNE STAKES

WINGS COME OFF HAWK

The 8/13 favourite Hawk Wing proved a bitter disappointment when only seventh to Dubai Destination in the Group One Queen Anne Stakes, an effort far off his incredible 11-length Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes victory last time it.

“He couldn’t do what he did that day,” said Hawk Wing’s trainer Aidan O’Brien. “He obviously wasn’t a shadow of the horse on that day. He didn’t run within stones of his form today

“Last year we always thought he was brilliant and he’d had his problems but we didn’t have a lot of time to see what they were. We’ll take him home, give him a break and see what we can do to sort him out. Mick (Kinane) didn’t say much, he just shook his head.

“I’m sorry because I probably should have gone through the horse more strenuously before today’s race and we would have probably found something and not run him.”

The racecourse veterinary officer examined the horse after the race and found him to be lame.

FIFTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH STAKES

EMOTIONAL FIRST ROYAL ASCOT WIN FOR MORRISON

Waverley Road survived a photo-finish and stewards’ enquiry to land an emotional first Royal Ascot success for trainer Hughie Morrison when winning the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes from Researched.

The winner carried the colours of the executors of Morrison’s father, Lord Margadale, who died in April.

“It was my father’s last serious horse and to win here is more than I could possibly expect,” said Morrison.

“It was very emotional for us all. My father stewarded here for a number of years, bred Juliette Marny and those other good horses and is the reason I am here today.

“I was more hopeful about Baltic King (who finished second in the Balmoral Handicap) as Waverley Road is a real galloper who doesn’t do a lot at home.

“I’d think about something like the Ebor for him but I’ve always thought he’d make a fantastic dirt horse because he’s such a galloper.”

PLACED QUOTES RACE FIVE
DUKE OF EDINBURGH STAKES

“FRUSTRATING,” AGREES STOUTE

“It has been a very frustrating afternoon,” said Sir Michael Stoute after his Researched had just been run out of things by Waverley in the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap.

Researched was the third horse from Freemason Lodge to have run well but not quite well enough, as Kalaman was an arguably unlucky runner-up to Zafeen in the St.James’s Palace Stakes and Right Approach third behind Dubai Destination in the Queen Anne.

Michael Jarvis was delighted with the effort by third placed Hambleden, who shows all his old zest even at the age of six.

“He is in the form of his life, the old boy,” he said. “He is really enjoying himself and he loves this fast ground.”

RACE SIX BALMORAL HANDICAP
WIN QUOTES

STAKES RACES NOW FOR DEPORTIVO

“He didn’t ride him too badly, did he?” joked winning trainer to Irish handler Dessie Hughes after the latter’s son Richard had given himself, Charlton and owner Khalid Abdulla a second success of the afternoon on Deportivo in the Balmoral Handicap. They had earlier won the Coventry Stakes with Three Valleys, giving the combination a 79/1 double.

“That was a good performance off that weight [top-weight of 9st 7lb],” said Charlton. “He ran very well at Kempton last time against older horses on his seasonal debut in a Listed race when he had a 4lb penalty for winning a Listed race last year.

“He was a pretty good two-year-old - he beat Mick Channon’s Checkit last year. I took him to France for his last start and it took hours to get there, the ground was soft and he lost his stride. He came back with a problem so I gave him the winter off.

“His mark of 105 maybe should have been higher - normally the handicapper doesn’t give them a chance in handicaps after winning a Listed race as a two-year-old. Also he’s improved and his temperament is better.”

Charlton believes that the handicapper will take a dim view of Deportivo’s two-length victory over Baltic King.

“It’s difficult to find five-furlong races for three-year-olds and I should think the handicapper will put him up to a mark of 112 or 115. So it will probably be Listed or Group Three races for him now,” continued the trainer.

Charlton’s other contestant in this concluding contestant, Move It, finished eighth.

“I didn’t think that there would be much between the winner and Move It, but an 8lb difference in weight is a lot.”

Hughie Morrison, trainer of second-placed Baltic King, said: “I think we were beaten by an improving horse who could be very good.”

EDDERY TWO WINNERS AWAY FROM 75 ROYAL ASCOT SUCCESSES

Pat Eddery, one of the stalwarts of the weighing room at 51, requires two victories at this year’s Royal Ascot to take him to 75 successes at the Royal Meeting.

The Buckinghamshire-based rider’s 73 wins here mean that he currently lies 43 successes ahead of his nearest rival among current jockeys, Michael Kinane.

To arrive at the historic 75 mark today, Eddery needs to win on both of his mounts on the first day.

He rides Acclamation for trainer Gerald Cottrell in the Group Two King’s Stand Stakes at 3.05pm. The four-year-old Royal Applause colt has not won for two seasons, but he was a very good two-year-old scoring on three occasions.

Later in the afternoon Eddery partners Pagan Dance for Pulborough-based handler Amanda Perrett in the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap Stakes at 4.55pm. He was also on board the four-year-old when he justified favouritism in a ten-furlong event at Newmarket on May 30.

Frankie Dettori is challenging Kinane for second place among current jockeys. The Italian has 28 Royal Ascot wins to his name as opposed to Kinane’s 30. Their positions could change today as Dettori has five mounts, while Kinane rides four times.

STOUTE COULD REACH 50 FOR THE SEASON AT ROYAL ASCOT

Newmarket-based trainer Sir Michael Stoute will reach the 50-mark for the 2003 season if he gains two winners at this year’s Royal Meeting.

While everyone knows that obtaining two successes at Royal Ascot is notoriously difficult, Stoute has had three winners here for the last three seasons and has had at least two victories a further 12 times - he currently lies on 43 successes at the Royal Meeting since his first win with Etienne Gerard in the 1977 Jersey Stakes.

Stoute has five chances of gaining his half-century for the season today. He runs Saddad in the Group Two King’s Stand Stakes at 3.05pm, Kalaman in the Group One St James’s Palace Stakes at 3.45pm, Right Approach in the Group One Queen Anne Stakes at 4.20pm and Researched and Hazim in the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap at 4.55pm.

On paper Kalaman and Researched would appear to be his best two chances of success today.

Kalaman is forecast to go off favourite for one of Europe’s leading events for three-year-olds over a mile. He has won both of his starts this term including a Listed heat at Kempton on May 24, when he defeated Ikhtyar by one and a half lengths. That rival’s trainer, John Gosden, subsequently stated that in Kalaman we had probably seen the winner of this year’s St James’s Palace Stakes.

Researched is also likely to be favourite for the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap. Running in the colours of the late Lord Weinstock, made famous by horses of the calibre of Troy, Golan, Islington, Ela-Mana-Mou, Pilsudski and Sun Princess, the four-year-old son of Danehill, the prolific stallion who passed away recently, is bidding to follow up on his recent one and a quarter length success in a York handicap last month.

POPULARITY OF ROYAL ASCOT
RACES CONTINUES

The tremendous popularity of races at the Royal Meeting is continuing in 2003 with both of Wednesday’s handicaps being oversubscribed.

The Royal Hunt Cup at 4.20pm has attracted a maximum field of 32 with 25 other horses being eliminated due to safety reasons.

Half an hour later the Ascot Handicap proved almost as popular with connections. This contest has attracted a maximum field of 29 with a further nine horses who wanted to participate being eliminated.

GOING NEWS AT 10 AM

Although there were some thundery showers in parts of the South East overnight, Ascot missed them all and the going for the first day of the 2003 Royal meeting remains

GOOD TO FIRM

on all parts of the course.

The course was watered over the weekend, with eight millimetres being applied on Friday, a further five on Sunday and three millimetres yesterday, but there has been no significant rain for ten days.

“The forecast is for the possibilty of some thundery showers today between 1pm and 4pm,” said clerk of the course Nick Cheyne. “It will be dry and warm but there may not be very much sun.

“As far as watering is concerned, we shall monitor the situation through the day before making any decision. We shall wait to see how the course is riding, what rain arrives and what is forecast.”

BETTING NEWS

Although the two handicaps which come at the end of the card look as difficult as ever to solve, punters have taken some fairly strong views and none of the 46 runners in those two races has been more popular than Researched, one of two runners for Sir Michael Stoute in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes (4.55), who has been backed from 4-1 to 7-2 with Victor Chandler, to the same price from 9-2 with Paddy Power and Ladbrokes. Nor has his stablemate Hazim been left out as Powers have cut him from 6-1 to 9-2 and William Hill have trimmed his price by a point to 4-1. In the same race Coral have seen demand for the rank outsider Iberus, whose price has been halved to 25-1.

In the closing Balmoral Handicap (5.30) Baltic King has been in demand across the board. Chandlers, Ladbrokes and Hills have cut him from 9-1 to 7-1, while there has also been money for Deportivo (10-1 from 14-1) with Ladbrokes and Hills and for Rectangle, who is at 12-1 from 18-1 with Coral. The Tote have tightened Willhewiz from 14-1 to 9-1.

Things have been quiet in the opening Coventry Stakes (2.30), though there has been support with Powers for Sabbeeh, who has been cut from 7-2 to 3-1, but there has been plenty of activity in the King’s Stand Stakes (3.05), much of it involving Olivia Grace and Oasis Dream. Olivia Grace has been cut from 12-1 to 10-1 by Powers, from the same price to a point shorter by Hills, from 11-1 to 9-1 by Coral and from 14-1 to 9-1 by the Tote, while Oasis Dream has come in from 8-1 to 13-2 by Powers, from the same odds to 7-1 with Chandlers and from 8-1 to 6-1 with the Tote.

Powers and the Tote report money for Clodovil in the St. James’s Palace Stakes (3.45) and have cut the Poule d’Essai winner by half a point to 7-2 and from 4-1 to 100-30 respectively, and in the same race Chandlers have trimmed Hold That Tiger to 12-1 from 14-1 and Powers have also laid the outsider Monsieur Bond from 25-1 to 20-1. Coral are laying Kalaman at 7-4.

Coral also report strong each way support at 6-1 for Dubai Destination against the apparently invincible Hawk Wing in the Queen Anne Stakes (4.20), in which Powers have cut Tillerman, who was just beaten in the race last year, from 25-1 to 16-1.

MORE BETTING NEWS

The interest in Olivia Grace and Oasis Dream in the King’s Stand Stakes (3.05) has continued through the morning with SkyBet reporting good money for both. They have cut Oasis Dream from 9-1 to 6-1 and Olivia Grace from 14-1 to 10-1, and they report money also for last year’s Queen Mary winner Romantic Liason, who has been trimmed from 16-1 to 12-1.

Oasis Dream has gone from 7-1 to 6-1 and back again with Cashman’s, who report interest in the Coventry for Sabbeeh (4-1 to 3-1), for Zafeen (12-1 to 9-1) in the St.James’s Palace Stakes (3.45) and Hazim (5-1 to 4-1) in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes (4.55)

Skybet also report money for Hazim (5-1 to 4-1) and Muhareb (16-1 to 12-1) in the Duke of Edinburgh, and they are another to have seen good support for Baltic King in the Balmoral Handicap (5.30), bringing him in from 10-1 to 7-1.

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS FOR STEVENS

Top American Jockey Gary Stevens, who finished shooting the film Seabiscuit in February, is tremendously excited about his current role both as a professional rider and a film star.

The 40-year-old, who retired from race riding in December, 1999, due to knee problems only to reverse the decision less than a year later, said: “I get as much of an adrenalin rush out of acting as in riding in races - the look on a film director’s face when he is pleased can be compared to the winning trainer at the Royal Meeting.

“As far as retirement is concerned, I have no time line. I was a raving lunatic for the 11 months that I spent out and I love mixing the two professions together.”

Stevens makes his feature film debut in Seabiscuit, which opens in Britain in November, 2003, playing the role of charismatic jockey George Woolf. He has some further film offers on the table .

He has three victories at the Royal Meeting to his name. He recalled: “In 1999 I rode the Queen’s Blueprint to victory for Sir Michael Stoute. I also beat Pilsudski on Godolphin’s Predappio and I can remember going past Michael Kinane, who looked very disappointed.”

The American rides Elusive City for trainer Gerard Butler in today’s Group Two King’s Stand Stakes at 3.05pm. Tomorrow he takes the mount on the Franck Mourier’s America America in the Group Three Queen Mary Stakes at the same time.

Unfortunately, Stevens was unable to throw any light on America America as he has never sat on her but he was unable to hide the enthusiasm he has for riding at the Royal Meeting again.
