BETDAQ CONFIRMS POSITION ON PRIVACY AND CALLS FOR
FULL INDUSTRY DEBATE
BETDAQ has reiterated its position that it will not
reveal the identity of any of its customers to any
non-statutory authority. It has also today called
on the Jockey Club to consider a multi-lateral
approach to information and integrity issues which
would better protect the innocent user of betting
services, and which would assist in deterring any
possible wrongdoing involving betting and sport.
'It has been suggested in some quarters that BETDAQ's
position is a cynical attempt to gain commercial
advantage by rejecting the memorandum signed by
Betfair,' said BETDAQ’s Rob Hartnett. 'We absolutely
reject this. Betdaq has built its business on its commitment
to its members that it will provide a secure and confidential
exchange platform for sports betting. Any agreement that we
sign with a third party must respect this commitment
and BETDAQ will not join with the other exchanges in
rewriting its contract with its members on a 'take it
or leave it' basis.
‘We believe the approach adopted with
Betfair and others is flawed. It fails to
offer adequate protection for innocent bettors, and
it fails to lay down any clear terms or parameters for the
quality of evidence required to initiate a request for
personal information.’
‘We have met the Jockey Club in the last few days to
express our concern in these areas. We hope that
this initial meeting can be broadened into an
industry wide discussion in the near future with a
view to creating a proper framework for cooperation
between all the parties involved.
‘It is our view that this framework must have the
support of all interested parties, including punters;
must involve a process that is fully transparent to all;
and must take full account of the privacy rights of
innocent punters.
‘Our meeting with the Jockey Club was also used to
confirm our commitment to providing detailed
non-personal information on betting patterns. BETDAQ
will not hesitate to close the account of anyone who
would appear to be involved with any attempted
corruption of racing or any other sport.
‘To go beyond this however, by putting private
information into the public domain, is unacceptable.
We believe that asking customers to sign away their
right to privacy without adequate safeguards is
wrong, and are surprised that organizations who
profess to speak on behalf of the betting public,
such as the NAPP, have made no comment on what comes
into force with some exchange services today.’
